The article discusses the social changes in rural Raion. The great changes that have taken place in the economy of Vesegonsk Raion over 47 years are difficult to depict with figures alone. The Vesegonsk district was therefore a "bear's corner," not only by virtue of its geographical position but by that of its economic isolation as well. Now the economy of Vesegonsk Raion has been organically unified with the economic life of the country as a whole, although the Raion remains agricultural even at the present time. The Vesegonsk collective farms furnish the large cities of the country with milk, butter and potatoes, and give the textile factories a large amount of high-quality flax. In turn, agricultural machines, fertilizer, petroleum products, cement, bricks, other building materials, food supplies, and widely used industrial goods come into Vesegonsk from various parts of the country. Certainly there are agricultural districts in the country that have achieved greater successes. People do not yet go to Vesegonsk to learn how to farm. On the contrary, the local collective farmers often visit other districts for progressive experience. Along with the growth of savings accounts, retail turnover has increased between 1953 and 1963 from 2,850,000 rubles to 15,632,000 rubles, including an increase in the countryside from 200,000 to 11,885,000 rubles.
