In 1972 a trial on susceptibility to carrot fly infestation was conducted on peat soil in East Anglia using 17 carrot cultivars sown on two dates one month apart. The only insecticide applied to the carrots was an aphicidal spray. The early-sown carrots were damaged by the first generation of larvae, but, by the second sampling date in October, there were no infestation differences between the two sowings. At harvest in December, significant differences in infestation levels occurred; these ranged from 82 per cent damaged roots for Amsterdammer Bak, 87 and 88 for two stocks of Royal Chantenay, to 97 per cent for Danvers 126. Allergy in children refers to the discomforting or incapacitating symptoms of a repetitive characteristic type when exposed to certain specific foreign substances called allergens. Serious illness requiring rehospitalization of low birth weight infants following discharge from the nursery was related to four specific sociomedical factors. These were failure of the mother to receive prenatal care, absence of the father from the home, receipt of public assistance, and presence of other children in the home. These factors formed the basis of a weighted prognostic index, permitting prospective assignment of a score to each low birth weight infant. Those at highest risk of inadequate follow-up care and rehospitalization were identified prior to discharge from the nursery. A reproducible experimental skin infection was a requirement before further studies on the pathogenesis of cutaneous infections could be undertaken. A variety of experimental procedures added further evidence that the skin is difficult to infect. However, a significant regional difference in susceptibility to experimental infection was demonstrated. The technique consisted of: a) applying Staphylococci and Streptococci in the form of an overnight broth culture; b) stabbing through the drop of inoculum with a blood lancet; and c) covering the site with nonporous plastic tape. Four areas on each subject were inoculated in an identical manner. The back was successfully infected in 15% and the arm in 13% of the attempts. This article discusses the fundamental propositions of Charles Goring in his research paper entitled "On the Inheritance of the Diathesis of Phthisis and of Insanity: A Statistical Study Upon the Family History of 1500 Criminals." Dr. Goring aims at providing, from a detailed analysis of 723 family histories of convicts, materials for filling a gap-or, rather, an inadequacy-in Professor Karl Pearson's "First Study" on the same topic-inheritance of pulmonary phthisis. Professor Pearson proceeded on the assumption that between 9 percent and 12 per cent of the general population at some time in their lives suffer from pulmonary tuberculosis. Goring deals both with the tubercular and with the insane diathesis. The double purpose of his study is to confirm by correct observation Pearson's assumption and to present some new evidences on the part played by infection, as opposed to inheritance, in the occurrence of pulmonary tuberculosis amongst the general population of the country. He finds that 11 percent of the general population are probably affected by tuberculosis and the maximum intensity of inheritance is 62%.

We have examined hairs from psoriatic patients by scanning electron microscopy and compared them with hairs from normal subjects. Micropits were seen in normal hair cuticle cells and in those from psoriatic subjects. Their significance is unknown. Dystrophic changes of these cells are associated with the psoriatic diathesis, occurring significantly more often in hairs from unaffected as well as from affected skin of patients with psorlasis compared with controls. We confirm previous observations that the hairs growing from psoriatic plaques are significantly thinner than those growing elsewhere on psoriatic subjects and than those of normal controls. For virus particles to become implanted in the skin from the exterior, usually requires some degree of mechanical trauma. In man, infection by herpes simplex virus is a typical example in which the primary lesions occur in the mouth, the eyes, the nailbeds or elsewhere according to the circumstances of infection. In cattle, vaccinia and cowpox infections of the teats can be spread through the herd by transmission on the hands of attendants during milking. In swine pox, the lesions along the bellies of pigs can be correlated with the habitat and movements of lice responsible for the spread of the infection.

Ninety-two patients with rosacea have been studied in order to test, where necessary against control subjects, certain widely accepted hypotheses concerning its cause. No evidence was found that bacteria are implicated as a factor in papular rosacea. Rosacea patients were not found to have a personality disorder, but when tested by a neuroticism proforma were found to be more depressed than con a trol subjects. The depression was regarded as a reaction to the cosmetic disability. There was no evidence that rosacea is linked to disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. Rosacea is not related to the seborrhoeic diathesis. There is no evidence of any important structural or functional abnormality of the small blood vessels of the face. Rosacea patients were not found to be more exposed than controls to climatic extremes. Histologically rosacea appears not to be primarily a folliculitis. Solar elastosis is often conspicuous and disorganization and atrophy of the upper dermis are frequent. The significance of these changes is uncertain. The cause of rosacea remains unknown. This is the study of 27 patients with peptic ulcer disease associated with pancreatitis, alcoholic in origin (22 patients), biliary tract disease associated (six patients) or posttraumatic in etiology (one patient). Seventy-seven per cent of the cases required surgery for this peptic ulcer diathesis for complications of bleeding, perforation, intractability, or obstruction. Of those operated upon, 60 per cent developed marginal ulceration. The incidence of marginal ulceration was four times higher in patients with alcoholic pancreatitis than it was in patients with biliary tract associated pancreatitis. We conclude that the peptic ulcer diathesis is more severe in patients with chronic pancreatitis than in subjects without pancreatitis and that this diathesis is most ominous in the alcoholic variety of the disorder. Surgical treatment is necessary for the complications of this ulcer diathesis in the majority of patients. Prophylaxis for a marked propensity for subsequent marginal ulceration, especially in patients with alcoholic pancreatitis, would indicate antrectomy and vagisection as the procedure of choice.
