5. Space-Invariant Holography with Quasi-Coherent Light

Abstract

Optical configurations for performing holography with light of limited coherence are analyzed. Such configurations, which may employ mirrors and gratings in preference to lenses and prisms, are space invariant in that the optical pathlength of a ray between object and hologram recording planes depends only on its initial direction, not on its location in the object plane. Holograms of arbitrary size made from object transparencies of arbitrary size and containing an arbitrary number of fringes may be produced with light of limited coherence.

6. THE EFFECTS OF ADRENALECTOMY AND HYPOPHYSECTOMY ON BILE FLOW IN THE RAT

Abstract

Using a method which permits bile collection relatively free from stress or trauma, we have studied bile flow in normal and hypophysectomized rats. Hypophysectomy was found to result in a sharply reduced bile flow which was not increased by small doses of corticosterone or of deoxycorticosterone. Adrenalectomy, previously reported to have a similar effect, was found not to reduce bile flow in either of the two strains of rats studied.

Abstract

I E TIFIERS: Thermionic converters. Two ethods were investigated for provi ing positive ions for neutralizing the electron space charge in a thermionic converter whic op rates at rel tively low t mperatures. Low temperature converters with e itter temperatures of 1200 C or low r are poten ially useful for operation with mall heat sources which burn ordinary fos il fuel in air. Data were obtained on arc mode operation of cesiu vapor diodes with molybdenum and with Philips B emitters in the temperature range 1000 to 1300 C. Power densities of about 0.3 to 1.0 watt per sq cm were obtained depending on emi er temperature and material. The presence of an auxiliary electrode in he form of a radiation shield surrounding the emi ter had a significant effect on diode perform nce with the Philips B emitter. The effects of the auxiliary electrode include an increased power output a d an increas d voltage at maximum power. ith the Philips B emitter the maximum power output occurred at a lower cesium pressure than with the molybdenum emitter. Materials which emit positive ions when heated in the range of 1000 to 1200 C were also udied. (Author)
