Dry matter contents (D) of potatoes from different countries are compared. When allowance is made for a strong relation between maturity and D, the following sequence, in ascending order of D, is found: USA < Germany < Britain < Netherlands

An investigation into the effect of different environments on lucerne varieties seeded in southern latitudes was carried out at Cambridge on spaced-plants and on yield trials during 1954–60. The varieties Flandria (northern French), Provence (southern French), and Grimm (Canadian) were multiplied in Cyprus for two generations under the control of the Department of Agriculture there. The English variety Eynsford was multiplied in countries of the Mediterranean area for one generation under the supervision of the O.E.E.C. and F.A.O. Morphological and physiological changes took place in Flandria. Eynsford and Grimm, the significance of which in relation to the generation, the authenticity of variety and the yield of fodder are discussed.

A sample of death certificates matched with 1960 Census records permitted comparison of response data for items asked on both records. Estimates of bias in death rates which are based on information from the two records are derived from the comparison data. Most of the comparisons yielded small discrepancies of inconsequential effect on the mortality rates. Some large inconsistencies, however, of potentially serious impact on the death rates were observed. The comparisons are examined and the implications of the results for the relevant mortality rates are discussed. In addition, age-specific death rates “corrected” for the disparities found in the age information on the two records are presented.

Biotechnology companies can access financial and management resources through venture capitalist (VC) firms. An analysis of 1,490 VC investments shows that country-of-origin (CO) of biotech companies has an effect on the participation by VC firms in various biotech subsectors. Specifically, it is found that US biotech companies tend to have higher amount received per VC firm, greater number of VC firms investing in them and greater biotech investment experience of the investing VC firms. Asia-Pacific biotech companies have consistently less VC firms investing in them and these investing VC firms tend to have less biotech investment experience. VC firms with greater biotech investment experience are also investing in European biotech companies more than those from the Americas less US. CO also correlates with outcomes in the four of the six key biotech subsectors studied. These findings suggest a strong CO effect of VC investment in biotech companies.

(1) Current literature has been cited to support the view that the country of origin of Red Clover has a very important bearing on the suitability of the seed for crop production in any particular locality; it is therefore a matter that should be considered of just as much and perhaps more importance, than germination and purity. There seems to be little doubt but that, generally speaking, locally grown seed or at least seed harvested in countries no warmer or but little warmer than the district where the seed is to be sown, is likely to produce plants which will “stand” the longest and in many instances produce the heaviest hay crops in the first year after sowing.
