SUMMARY After a short look onto the methodology of the random sampling and its fields of application, the problem of the random sampling of the average monthly discharges is examined in detail. Difficulties arose from chronological sequence having periodic seasonal variations are turned over by considering two components: annual yield and its distribution during the year. While yield is given as the yearly mean discharge, the distribution may be considered through the annual sequence of the monthly coefficients. The yearly mean discharge is operated by the usual methods of the statistic of the variates: distribution law, estimation of the coefficients of the law. As for the distribution along the year, a “storage” or “set” of aleatory functions is constituted, from what the “shape” to be used for the yearly mean discharge, is drawn at random. AUTOSOMAL aneuploidy in man has been known for eight years in the form of autosomal trisomy for chromosome 21.1 Another form of autosomal aneuploidy, monosomy, is usually considered to be incompatible with life. Short term cultures derived from peripheral blood of a cytogenetically normal man (46, XY) were treated with pronase and incubated for various intervals. The results show that the longer the incubation with pronase is, the more profound the effects on the chromosomes become. A short pronase treatment causes chromosome stickiness followed by the digestion of the longitudinal structure of the chromosomes. Extended reaction results in complete digestion of the chromosomes and drastic reduction in the number of metaphases present in cultures.

Biochemical, Morphologic, and Gytogenetic Studies of Leukocytes Growing in Continuous Culture from Normal Individuals and from Patients with Cystinosis

Chromosome measurements including relative total length, arm ratio and centromeric index of the human complement were presented. Based on these data the human complement was classified into metacentric, submetacentric, subtelocentric, and acrocentric chromosomes and arranged into a mammalian style karyotype. On the basis of this classification a new karyotype was suggested to facilitate analysis of Denver Group III (X—6—12) and divide it into four subunits. Metacentric chromosomes 10 and 16 were detached from their respective groups in this new karyotype.

The results of chromosome studies of five species of mosses from the Mont Tremblant area of Quebec are presented. The chromosome numbers of two species, Plagiothecium roeseanum (Hampe) B.S.G., with the number n = 20, and Polytrichum ohioense Ren. & Card., with the number n = 14, are reported for the first time. Both species are established tetraploids with no evidence of chromosome irregularities in meiosis. Chromosome numbers reported for the other three species are as follows: Dicranum rugosum (Hoffm.) Brid., n = 12; Dicranum scoparium Hedw., n = 12; and Plagiothecium denticulatum Hedw., n = 20. The population of D. rugosum that was studied did not possess small precociously separating bivalents as have been reported for European populations. The close resemblance of the chromosome complements of P. denticulatum and P. roeseanum is in line with the close taxonomic relationship between the two species. Cytotaxonomic implications are discussed under each species.

Chromosome measurements, centromeric position and short arm structure of the three large acrocentric autosomes in the human complement were investigated in somatic metaphases prepared from peripheral blood cultures. Chromosomes 13, 14 and 15 were arranged in descending order of their total length. The results of this study show that chromosome 13 has the lowest arm ratio and possesses a double satellite system, number 14 has the highest arm ratio and lacks satellites, and 15 has intermediate arm ratio and a prominent single satellite.

An infant with typical acrocephalosyndactylia was found to have a consistently present deletion-translocation of the short arms of chromosome 2 to the long arms of one of the chromosomes in the 11-12 group, a karyotype of 46,XX,t (2p−; Cq+). This patient brings the total reported number of abnormal karyotypes in ACS to four of the 24 patients studied cytogenetically. All chromosome anomalies previously described in ACS also involve group A, but all involve different structural rearrangements.
