The article presents a survey of medical statistics on the fallout of population in Australia over the past 25 years in relation with the nuclear tests that have conducted within that period. The increase in the incidence of leukemia is the most sensitive indicator of a detrimental effect on a nation's health which has resulted from the ingestion of radioactive materials during the testing of nuclear weapons. Among the hazardous substances include strontium-90, cesium-137 and iodine -131 which can be injected into the stratosphere and the troposphere.

The article presents statistics on Australian migration. In 1963, the total number of persons who arrived in Australia from overseas was 380,727 and departures totalled 309,082, making an excess of arrivals over departures of 71,645. Arrivals in 1963 under assisted passages schemes totalled 62,914. They comprised: British, 47,461; German, 2,521; Dutch, 1,340; Italian, 151; Greek, 2,297; Austrian, 458; Maltese, 2,024; other, 6,662. Occupation of arriving settlers: Professional, technical and related, 5,113; administrative, executive and managerial, 1,641; clerical, 5,037; sales, 2,017; farmers and primary producers, 3,218; miners, quarrymen, etc., 316; transport and communications, 2,245; craftsmen, 16,019; labourers, 7,652; service, sport, recreation, 7,635; inadequately described and not stated, 2,802; not in work force, 54,455. Aliens registered in Australia on December, 1963, numbered 400,528, compared with 407,099 a year previously. Of the 1963 figure, 226,325 were males and 174,203 females.

This article describes the units being used for collection and tabulation of economic census data in Australia. Integrated censuses of mining, manufacturing, electricity, gas, wholesale and retail trade and certain services are being conducted in Australia for the year ended June 1969. These censuses have been conducted before, as separate inquiries. They are being integrated for many reasons, one of which is to provide consistent data for estimating parts of the national accounts. This means data consistent throughout the field of the national accounts themselves, to the extent that this field is covered by the economic censuses, and data consistent as between the national accounts and economic statistics in other forms. The sources of national accounts estimates in Australia at present are a mixture mainly of taxation returns, public accounts, and official statistics of production, capital expenditure, stocks and retail and foreign trade; and the statistical discrepancies reflect the variety of the sources.

It reports that according to population projections released by the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics in Canberra, Australia could have a population of nearly 20 million by 1986. These estimates are based on certain assumptions as to future natural increase and overseas migration, namely that the birth rate will continue to rise uniformly and net immigration will continue at a rate of 100,000 a year. Assuming this annual intake, the Bureau estimated another 3,364,000 migrants would have arrived by 1986 in Australia. It is further informed that on February 26 the agreement between Italy and Brazil, giving regulations for assisting migration to Brazil and provision for certain facilities, which was drawn up in Rome on December 9, 1960, came into effect. Responsibility for the local settlement of the refugees already in Burundi had been taken over by the governmental authorities during the second half of 1963 and these refugees were on their way towards becoming self-supporting.

Using published data from the Australian vital registration and census systems, several time series are compiled: crude birth rates from the 1860s; fertility rates from the 1880s; age-specific and parity-specific measures from the 1910s; cumulative fertility measures by birth year of parent beginning with the 1890s; and cumulative fertility measures for marriages by year contracted from the 1910s. The decline in fertility to the 1930s, the upswing to 1961, and declines thereafter revealed by annual fertility measures show far more variation than do measures of total generation fertility--2.7 children per woman born in 1893-95, 2.3 1906-10, 2.8 1921-25, and perhaps 3.0 for women born in the 1930s. Both annual and generation measures show a younger age at parenthood, a decrease in childlessness, and progressively fewer large families. In the light of present experience, it seems not unreasonable to project generation fertility of 2.5 children, implying a crude birth rate of about 20 per thousand for the next fifteen years or so. The article presents statistics from the Department of Immigration, Australia's annual immigration program, which is based on "settler arrivals" (i.e. persons who, on arrival in Australia, declare their intention of remaining there permanently). The target figure is determined each year in the light of existing economic conditions. The 1965-66 immigration program provided for 145,000 settlers and the actual arrivals at the end of June 1966 were 144,055 (settlers) while the permanent and long term arrivals together amounted to 189,795. The Australian Government would provide them help through the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM) towards the passage costs of certain categories of assisted migrants including refugees. This would cut down the amount of loans these migrants had to repay to ICEM. The author presents the view that the government should give increased unilateral assistance to selected migrants needed in Australia and not already eligible for assistance under existing bilateral agreements or from international organizations. The government should make a grant of $90.00 a head to voluntary agencies for certain family reunion migrants travelling to Australia under their auspices, but not eligible under assisted passage programmes.

In this article the authors present models of stratification processes and their substantive interpretations, and discuss problems of estimating these models. When a variable is operative in a process. it is also necessary to specify how that variable is operative: the parameters of the process do this. It is necessary also to observe that to talk of changes of parameters is to talk of two things: first, that changes in the parameters represent changes in the system, and second, that processes with these different parameters will affect the individual trajectories of units involved in the particular process. To illustrate these points in a research context the authors turn to an article which attempts to compare the operation of the stratification process in the U.S. and in Australia. The second methodological point turns on the well-known fact that standardized coefficients are affected by changes in variances of regressors and regressands when unstandardized coefficients are constant, and that unstandardized coefficients are not affected by random error in the regressand. The inclusion of an error term in the status attainment equation affects the estimates obtained in the regression procedures in the following manner.

The article presents information about the Australian Jewish community. The 1,183 Jews who lived in Australia in 1841 represented 0.57 percent of the total Australian population at that time. Immigration, mainly of victims of Nazi persecution, has since caused a revitalization of Australian Jewry and a substantial growth in their numbers. The full impact of immigration on the growth of Australian Jewry can, perhaps, best be illustrated by reference to a study published in 1940 by J. Gentili, then Lecturer in Statistical Methods at the University of Western Australia. His careful analysis of the then prevailing age distribution and trends led him to forecast an Australian Jewish population of 21,500 for 1963. The heavy post-war wave of immigration as well as the children subsequently born to these migrants account for the fact that his forecast has proved to be far off the mark. Australian Jews tend to draw together and congregate. It is interesting to note how the census figures not only underline this fact, but also pinpoint the specific areas of Jewish congregation within metropolitan areas.

A model of a complete system of k linear expenditure functions introduced by Leser in 1960 [6, 7] has the advantage of great computational simplicity. An arbitrary specification, however, equating all cross elasticities of substitution results in unreliable estimates of price effects. In the present paper, a result in the theory of additive preferences [Houthakker, 5] is used in order to obtain a more plausible specification. This is achieved at the expense of an iterative procedure; however, the number of parameters (2k + 1) is identical in both models. This article focuses on the production functions for Australian manufacturing industries. The production function, being a technical relationship, might well be estimated in terms of technical rather than monetary measures of capital. This paper takes as its point of departure the Arrow, Chenery, Minhas, Solow (ACMS) time series estimation of the side relationship of the CES production function and proposes an energy measure of capital, namely, horsepower. Labour (L) should be a flow of labour services in constant efficiency units. The Secondary Industries Bulletin details number employed, including working proprietors. There are small problems concerning overtime, etc. which should be allowed for on a similar basis as the use of capital. If labour works at night, then so does capital. The series L in this paper is the number employed including working proprietors taken from the Secondary Industries Bulletin. Section II considers the data requirements and assumptions for the ACMS estimation and suggests that the original formulation of the relation may give biased estimates of the elasticity of substitution due to an autocorrelation problem arising from random errors of measurement in capital while section III considers a specification error analysis of a systematic misspecification of capital.

The article examines the relationship between parental loss and subsequent suicidal attempts of patients with neurotic and sociopathic disorders. Eighty-one patients who had suicidal attempts were compared with non-suicidal controls with respect to incidence of parental loss. Results showed that the incidence of loss was found to be significantly higher in suicidal than in non-suicidal neurotics. It was also revealed that the proportion of neurotic patients who had suffered loss in the first 4 years of life was significantly greater in the suicidal group than in non-suicidal controls. Implications of the findings are discussed.

The article reports on the emigration data in 1962 in Greece released by the National Statistical Office which showed that emigration as a whole has continued to increase the number of emigrants to European countries. The number of emigrants going to Australia increased by 49.9 percent which is 14.2 percent of the total number of emigrants. The main regions of origin of temporary emigrants are central Greece, the Aegean Islands, the Ionian Islands and the Peloponnese. The proportion of persons with an occupation to the total number of emigrants rose from 63.3 percent in 1961 to 72 percent in 1962.

In "The Old-New Distinction and Immigrants in Australia," Stanley Lieberson's interpretation of Australian immigration statistics is open to serious question. Contrary to his premise, the Australian immigration experience does not provide appropriate data for evaluating the old-new differentiation of immigrant behavior in American history. The Australian statistics do not support Lieberson's assertion that "northwestern and southeastern European immigrant patterns of adaptation and assimilation will be similar whenever the groups are established in the society at a comparable period." The emergence of the old-new classification of immigrants in America, as Lieberson pointed out, owed much to the change in the composition of immigrants around the turn of the century. The admission into Australia since World War II of immigrants born in southern, central, and eastern European countries differed considerably and fundamentally from the previous influx of "new" immigrants into the U.S. In the case of displaced persons, the Australian government established stringent criteria for admission. The number and monthly rate of admissions of the immigrants were specified as were their age, marital status, dependent status, employability, and "security" and health conditions.

An important feature of the Australian government's post-war immigration program has been the preference shown for immigrants from the British Isles. In a fundamental sense, the success of the Australian government's assisted and non-assisted British immigration program could be measured by the proportion of immigrants who settled permanently in Australia. The fact that no reliable estimate of this proportion has yet been made is probably due to several reasons. It is the aim of this article to discuss the factors contributing to the absence of reliable estimates. The socio-economic characteristics of returned migrant workers have been examines by a sample survey of re-registrations for the National Insurance during 1959.
