In 1971, the American Speech and Hearing Associa- tion, under contract with the National Institute of Dental Reseach, assembled an interdisciplinary committee to review the present status of clinical research on cleft lip and palate, and to discuss possible approaches and recommend priorities with respect to filling the gaps in existing knowledge. Between August, 1971 and July, 1972, state-of-the-art workshops were conducted by six subcommittees—concerned, respectively, with etiology and pathogenesis, anatomy and physiology, pediatric and otologic aspects, surgery and physical management, orofacial growth and dentistry, and speech and psychosocial management. Presented here is the report of the subcommittee concerned with pediatric and otologic aspects. The article provides information on pulmonary artery banding in infants and children. The procedure was performed for the first time in 1952 at the University of Virginia Medical Center on a four-month-old baby with a large left-to-right shunt. The procedure is to place a Nylon or wide Teflon or umbilical tape around the main pulmonary artery in order to increase the resistance to right ventricular emptying. Moreover, an adequate banding procedure should result in a pressure in the distal pulmonary arteries in or close to the normal range. Originally, it was postulated that one should wait at least five years following banding before proceeding with complete surgical correction. Yet, recent work, as of 1965, has shown that reversal of the arteriolar changes may occur in several months rather than in years.

There are topics which the pediatric philatelist enjoys pursuing. A pediatric philatelist can follow the medical progress of the child on stamps. Other diseases of children depicted on stamps include polio, deafness and blindness and amputation. Advancement of health, hygiene, nutrition, and physical or mental education is the motivation behind very many stamps from all parts of the world.

The article presents the findings of a study concerning the illnesses of children from birth to 18 years. Results of the study show that boys had higher mean values for number of illnesses than girls, except in the eleventh year where the number of illnesses were the same. Girls, on the other hand, had higher mean scores for illnesses than the boys during their first six years, majority of these illnesses were considered as severe or prolonged illnesses. Generally, it can be said that girl's number of illnesses were still lower in comparison to the boys.

The article presents the methodology of a study concerning the illnesses of children from birth to 18 years. Building the record of the illnesses of each child was the major step in implementing the study. The record consists of the child's health history at the time of each clinical visit. The routine visits were scheduled at three-month intervals during the first year, six month intervals up to 10 years and yearly, thereafter. The records of each child's illness experience were classified into sections: infancy (birth to 2 years), preschool period (age 2 to 6), school (age 6 to 10), early adolescence (age 10 to 14) and late adolescence (age 14 to 18).

The article discusses the norms derived from the measurements of the roentgenographic shadows. The study presented in this section were derived from measurements of children who had been enrolled in the study before birth. Exclusion from the study includes the following quality: if the birth weight was below 2.5 kilograms, if length at birth was less than 47.0 centimeters, and if there were gross evidence of congenital defect or birth injury. The section also offers tables and charts based on the study and each gives the tenth, fiftieth, and ninetieth percentile measurements including the mean and standard deviation for each age group.

The precise location of the normal upper limit of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein is not a trivial issue. An elevation may be the only laboratory sign of disease in illnesses that are both life-threatening and curable. This article examines the normal upper limit of CSF protein concentration in children under the less than ideal conditions in which physicians must make a judgment about what is normal and what is not. Data were obtained from lumbar punctures done in the pediatric emergency room of the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center.

The children involved in the study consists of 67 boys and girls who constitute the Maturity Series of the Harvard Longitudinal Studies. The children were followed from birth until they reach their 18th year. Its primary objective is to analyze the children's illnesses experiences in total and by separate categories. The data of the study are reported for both number of illnesses and score of illnesses, as defined for total childhood or those illnesses that occurred from birth to 18 years.
