This article discusses strategies for preventing reinfection of the periapical tissues following root canal therapy. intradental and apicostomical approaches to collecting cultures and determining the efficacy of a root canal in bacteriological control are described. The effective use of these techniques and the root-amputation method for diagnosing continued infection following a root canal is explored.

The article presents research examining the culture broth contamination by residual paraaminotoluene sulfonamide (PATS) in endodontal therapy. Particular attention is paid to the relation between carry-over of residual medicament and culture growth inhibition when PATS is used as an endodontal antiseptic. Results found that endodontal bacterial growth was not inhibited in infusion broth where PATS concentration was as high as 10 mg.

The article presents a study which examines the practices used to screen and select endodontic antifungal agents for patients. Previous studies on non-antibiotic para-aminotoluene sulfonamide (PATS) are mentioned. The anti-yeast activity of common endodontic agents are reviewed, including para-hydroxyethyl benzoate and sodium caprylate.

A conference paper regarding an investigation into dental granuloma is presented. A description of what a dental granuloma is and the impact that it can have on a person's mouth is provided. The percentage of dental granuloma that were studied that did not have any epithelial tissues is mentioned. The impact of dental granuloma not having epithelial tissues is discussed.

A method for the isolation of anaerobic bacteria from endodontic specimens under Continuous anaerobiosis is described. A mobile anaerobe unit supplies a gentle stream of oxygen-free gas over the tooth when the bacteriologic sample is taken. The paper-points are then, under oxygen-free gas, immediately transferred to prereduced, anaerobically sterilized roll tubes. The different isolated anaerobic bacteria are typed with biochemical tests, antibiotic susceptibility testing and gas chromatographic analysis of volatile fatty acids and alcohols. The article presents reports of combined Annual Meeting of Canadian Academy of Endodontics and the American Association of Endodontists. The first day of the meeting featured the research seminar. The first paper was on a study concerning "Change in Dentine Brittleness Relative to Dehydration," by Douglas Stewart and Herbert Schilder of Boston University. Again from Boston University, Herbert Schilder and Roger Czarnecki reported on a "Histological Evaluation of the Human Dental Pulp in Teeth with Varying Degrees of Periodontal Disease."

SILVER amalgam may be used for the obliteration of apical canals by a coronal approach, or for the retrograde settling of apical canals and for the repair of those accidental perforations of the root which allow adequate access for direct instrumentation. The technique of filling the apical third of a root canal with amalgam either before or after apicectomy has been fully covered in earlier publications (Messing 1958, 1960, 1965), but in this paper the methods used to prepare and fill perforations and apical cavities will be discussed, and the use of amalgam for sealing the apices of teeth destined for re-implantation will also be described. The article presents a study which evaluated the antifungal properties of chemical agents used in endodontic treatments, focusing on candida organisms and their potential for irritating tissues. Several tests used to assess the antifungal agents are reviewed, including the disk screening test and the tube dilution test.

The article discusses papers delivered at the proceedings of the Northwest Branch of the International Association for Dental Research, held October 26, 1958. Topics addressed included an evaluation of three intracanal antibacterial agents, the importance of uniformity in endodontic instruments, equipment, and filing materials, and a device that uses temperature changes to stimulate human dentin.

This article discusses the establishment of a section on stomatology under the auspices of the American Congress of Physical Therapy at their annual conference from September 6-9, 1932 in New York City. This potential for the American Congress of Physical Therapy to encourage cooperation between operative dentistry and other medical and surgical specialties is explored. The potential uses of electro-surgery and ultra-violet light in dentistry are noted.

The article presents information on the Provincial Meeting of the Society which was held on, October 2, under the Presidency of J.M. Mumford at the Liverpool Dental School by courtesy of Professor Lawton the Director of Dental Education and the Board of Governors. The final paper in the morning session was presented by J. Zamet. He gave a fascinating discourse on the place of Endodontics in Periodontology. The main thesis of his paper was plaque control and he showed a number of slides to illustrate the ways in which it was necessary to achieve this. In posterior teeth the problem was particularly difficult.

This article reports on an annual provincial meeting of the British Endodontic Society which was held at Oxford, Great Britain, on September 28-29, 1974. The meeting on Saturday was opened by the President. He introduced Major Stock who presented a paper on his investigation into "The Comparison of the efficiency of the Giromatic system and hand operated instruments in Root Canal Therapy". Two films were shown during the meeting, one made by the U. S. Navy on Endodontic Techniques and the other on a diodontic implant technique entitled "Tooth and Nail."

An experimental study is described of the apex formation and structure in immature permanent teeth alter vital amputation, vital extirpation and after the treatment of teeth with necrotic pulp. Experiments in young dogs suggest that after vital amputation of the coronal part of the pulp, root formation was continued through the process of changed odontogenesis. In cases where the pulp had been completely extirpated or after the treatment of pulpless teeth, the process of normal odontogenesis was interrupted and the apex was completely closed by non-homogeneous vital calcified tissue. On the basis of studies of the structure of the calcified tissue, it was concluded that it was a product of the formative activity of cells originating from the successive differentiation of fibroblasts in the young granulation tissue. The experiments suggest that following vital amputation of the pulp in children, further root odontogenesis is possible. In the treatment of pulpless teeth, the basic target should be stimulation and preservation of the formative activity of the granulation tissue cells n the apical part of the root canal to allow the possibility of calcified callus forming in the wide apical opening. Autografts were performed on rhesus monkeys. After standard endodontic procedures and reimplantation the monkeys were killed at one week intervals. Elastic, reticulin, collagen, and oxytalan fibers were studied histologically in the periodontal ligament and transseptal regions. Ankylosis and fiber degeneration may be related to the quality of the regenarted fibers and the lack of functional stimulation during fiber regeneration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In odontometric studies, root divergence can be expressed in terms of the ratio of the projected root length to the actual root length (cosine) or as the actual angle itself. Since the distribution of the cosines is skewed and the distribution of the angles is rather symmetrical, the angle measurement is preferable. Various types of significance tests with either measurement will generally not differ greatly, because of the insensitive (robust) nature of these tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an in vitro study which investigates antiseptics and antibiotics that are used in endodontics. The action of the antiseptics and antibiotics in the destruction of microorganisms involved in the infection of root canals is examined. The laboratory procedures performed for the study are described, which involve preliminary tests of the materials in general usage and the application of the disc method and the serial dilution method for qualitative research.

The article discusses the use of antibiotics in operative dental procedures and endodontics. The continued usage of non-antibiotic medicaments for the sterilization of infected dentin in operative procedures and endodontics as of 1956 is noted, mentioning the need for a report on the use of antibiotics. An in vitro study on the effectiveness of several antibiotics is presented.
