In the convention of American Federation of Labor held in 1917 in Buffalo, New York, the question arose of endorsing the American Alliance for Labor and Democracy. The debate on this comparatively insignificant resolution lasted throughout the greater part of an afternoon session. The great dominant unifying influence in the convention was the spirit of loyalty to the government. Only once was there a serious clash, and then the opposition dwindled down. The convention adopted a resolution saying that employers ought to allow their employees to organize and to deal with them collectively. They did not offer to undertake any obligations if the employers would do that.
