Abstract

The article chronicles the development of business and its unique place in American culture. The article begins by differentiating how the business culture developed in the U.S.. The author ties Federalism to commerce, arguing that the first ten amendments of the U.S. Constitution are an assertion of commercial honesty and honor. Further discussion of the constitutional rights of property over the rights of labor is presented. The article discusses the importance of the businessman in our society, who gains power not through wealth, but from the recognition of his service to the community by invention and the pursuit of progress. The author questions the shift in government control of business away from these initial ideals and the popular view that business is unethical or dishonest.
