The article presents comments on sociologist Bernard C. Go's paper "The Chinese in the Philippines: Facts and Fancies," which was published in the October 1972 issue of the "Philippine Sociological Review." The author agrees with many of Go's conclusions, notably with his statements that the Chinese no longer dominate the Philippine economy nor do they control it, that not all the Chinese in the Philippines are rich, that the Philippine Chinese community is not a fertile ground for the spread of communist ideology, that Chinese girls are willing to marry Filipinos, that never before in the history, be cause of the changes that have taken place, has the prospect of integrating and assimilating the Chinese into the mainstream of Filipino society appeared brighter than it does today. Chinese in the Philippines are far from homogeneous. Because of the existence of disparate factions sometimes working at cross purposes, the Chinese are not a monolithic group, nor are they united. However, one cannot deny the fact that the Chinese, especially the China-born, are clannish in the sense that they continue to cling to their family, clan, village, and district associations.

The main objectives of our paper are to examine economic, political, social, demographic, and professional factors in the United States and Taiwan which may account for Chinese scholars' decisions to stay in the United States or their reluctance to return to Taiwan. Our paper is divided into five sections. Sections I and II provide background and definition of terms used in the paper. Sections III and IV present data and statistical analysis. The article discusses a study on the frequency of dental caries in Chinese people. Researchers studied 1000 people of various ages, classes, and geographical origins who were living in Peiping, China. They studied a total of 20,778 permanent teeth and found that 2.1% were carious. Tables are presented which categorize the teeth that were studied.

The article presents a detailed discussion about the technique and methodologies of the Chinese people regarding birth and fertility control. It mentions that one-third of the women of child-bearing age may be practicing birth control. Although Chinese people are having great implementation regarding family planning, they have little knowledge about modern forms of contraception. It explains that the literature on contraceptive practice in China was mostly given by China-watchers based from their traditional methods of contraception.

The article presents empirical studies of what actually happened to people who were "brain-washed." The author describes the process of "thought reform" which Chinese intellectuals have to undergo as part of the price of belonging to the new regime. This description provides an excellent example of the intensity with which the Chinese are pursuing their program to indoctrinate as many segments of their population as possible. It is a subject, which has received much attention in this country when involving such groups as American prisoners of war and other incarcerated Westerners. But there has been surprisingly little systematic psychological investigation of the thought reform procedures that the Chinese have employed with their own people, particularly with their intellectuals. The most intensive of these all-Chinese thought reform programs for intellectuals is that conducted in the "revolutionary colleges"--set up all over China immediately after the Communist takeover. These were particularly active between 1948 and 1952, when they represented an ideological hard core for the entire thought reform movement, an extreme model for reform efforts throughout the population.

The article discusses the characteristic traits of the Chinese people. First, they had a great deal of patience. This trait was generally hailed as a noble virtue in China. Developed under economic and population pressures and in the wear and tear of family relationships, patience as a characteristic trait of the Chinese people manifested itself in the form of racial, religious, and political tolerance. Chinese were the greatest fatalists in the world. Fatalism as a characteristic trait was the most marked in matrimonial affairs. Chinese were pre-eminently frugal. As a social idea, frugality was originally concerned with the satisfaction of human needs without waste. Chinese were humble people. To them humility was a great virtue. They knew that egotism had the tendency to offend friends and alienate people and was in no way conducive to social harmony. So they made great effort to discourage its indulgence. Chinese were generally quite contented with whatever little they had. Chinese were extremely conservative. This conservatism was born of an intense feeling of satisfaction for the cultural greatness of their past. Chinese were not particular about accuracy and precision. This characteristic trait was very obvious in the field of medicine. All these characteristic traits of the Chinese people were the natural outgrowths of long centuries of application of a negativistic system of philosophy in their social and political organizations. Viewed from the standpoint of the twentieth century, they were traits of weakness responsible for the general backwardness of China.
