It is said that Chinese history was too dull to be studied by any but specialists or Germans, and that the Germans had not discovered it yet. The author of this volume have shown that it may be made to compare in romantic interest with the history of any nation, and that the Chinese themselves are masters of graphic description. In a book of such extraordinary interest to students of modern China it is possible to indicate here only a few hitherto obscure matters that are at last revealed to outsiders.
