The article describe the shop steward-training program of the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers which is operated jointly with the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers. Due to the emergence of trade unionism throughout the U.S. industry, new needs and new jobs were created for international unions. The objective of the training of union stewards in the pulp and paper industry is to stimulate activity among the men and women who represent the local union. The activity will depends upon the local union and the location of the community.

The article deals with three agreements signed by the United Wall Paper Crafts of North America in New York City. This association was established by a consolidation of two smaller national unions which are the National Association of Machine Printers and Color Mixers of the U.S. and the National Print Cutters' Association of America. The first contract deals with printers and color mixers and covers 300 mechanics in 19 industrial areas. The second deals with 125 printer cutters in a single factory. Lastly, the third contract covers 150 print cutters employed in the shops of print-cutting entrepreneurs.

This article presents abstracts of papers presented at the seventh annual meeting of Society for Psychophysiological Research held at the Vacation Village Hotel in San Diego, California from October 19-22, 1967. One of the papers explored monocular visual evoked potentials as an index of maturity of human neonates. Another paper focused on habituation differences to tactile stimulation for waking and sleeping infants. In this paper the role of state in determining a psychological or physiological response is not disputed.

The article examines the doctorate programs in science education of the U.S. According to the author, the Association for the Education of Teachers in Sciences (AETS) should establish some statement of minimal standards for the doctorate programs. Procedures for approval and disapproval of the standards should also be devised by the association. In science education, doctorate program graduates can be employed in several tasks such as department heads, test development heads and advisory services overseas. A committee can also be establish by the AETS to investigate and clarify the diversity of the doctorates in field of science education.

The sessions would be on topics like collective behavior by Professor Arthur G. Neal, complex organization by Professor Mark Lefton, culture and personality by Professor Gordon J. DiRenzo, demography by Professor H. Theodore Groat, family by Professor Edwin L. Livel, and others.

Information about what wass discussed at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) meeting that was held in March 1961 is presented. The funds that were made available for the publishing of meetings has increased from 248 to 356 and the contributing institutions went from 69 to 99. With that being noted, the average number of papers per institution has remained constant during the growth, even though the number of papers presented ranged from one to 25 per institution.

A table of content is also given. The editorial policy and objectives of "Decision Sciences," the official journal of the American Institute for Decision Sciences (AIDS), are discussed. AIDS is an organization committed to promoting the development and application of quantitative methodology to functional and behavioral problems or administration by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, experience and information among those who teach in collegiate schools of business and among those who have a special interest in the development and use of quantitative methodologies. The message of the last article of Albert J. Simone as periodical editor is discussed. Simone formally turn over the editorship responsibility to Professor William S. Peters.

President of the American Sociological Society Louis Wirth is planning for a Section on Contributed Papers for the next annual meeting that is to be held in New York from December 28 to 30, December, 1947. Although this Section is particularly de- signed for those younger members of the Society, including graduate students, who have not yet had an opportunity to appear on the pro- gram in other sections, contributions from other members of the Society will be welcome. Since this Committee is working closely with the Committee on Research, it is being urged that members who have completed research papers suitable for oral presentation and which do not fall within the scope of other Sections be offered for consideration in the Section on Contributed Papers.

This article presents information on American Personnel and Guidance Association's convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 1969 APGA Convention in Las Vegas will officially open Monday morning, March 31, 1969, and conclude on Thursday noon, April 3, 1969. All general sessions during the Convention will be morning sessions. Proposals should be sent directly to the appropriate Divisional Program. When programs cut across division lines, they may be submitted to the Program Chairman of one of the divisions involved or to the Program Coordinator for assignment to a Divisional Program Chairman. APGA members are invited to submit research papers for programs under the theme, "Research Papers." Papers will be invited to present their papers at these `Convention programs in order to communicate to the practitioner the latest discoveries relevant to the personnel and guidance field. Presenters will be asked to bring reproductions of their papers for pass-outs at the sessions. Individual presentations to the audience will be no longer than five minutes, during which the researcher will state his problem, succinctly describe design, state his hypothesis, present his findings and conclusions.

This article reports on the Fifth World Congress of Sociology organised by the International Sociological Association (ISA), at the Shoreham Hotel, Washington D.C., during 2-8 September, 1962, under the auspices of UNESCO and in collaboration with the American Sociological Association. The meetings brought together 1,030 participants from fifty one countries. Three main themes dealt with were, sociologists, policy-makers and the public, the sociology of development, the nature and problems of sociological theory. Many of the 240 invited contributions and the main papers presented to the plenary sessions are being published in the periodical "Transactions," volumes I and II of which have already appeared. Volumes III and IV will be published during the spring of 1963 and will contain reports on the discussions, a representative selection of the shorter papers and a list of the participants. Grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Science Foundation and the Social Science Research Council enabled the ISA to pay the travel expenses of most of the principal contributors and to offer free charter flight tickets to 80 young research workers from twenty countries.

By vote of the executive committee of the American Sociological Society, the 1951 Annual Meeting will be held in Chicago on September 5, 6, and 7, 1951. This will overlap, on September 5, with the meeting in the same city of the American Psychological Association. The hotel which will serve as headquarters for the annual meeting has not yet been selected. Those who are interested in presenting papers at the 1951 meeting of the American Sociological Society are invited to make known their interest by following the procedure outlined below. The Committee on Contributed Papers will handle submitted papers in one of two ways. If a paper appears to fall in an area covered by one of the sections of the meeting, it will be forwarded to the chairman of that section for his consideration otherwise it will be considered for inclusion in one of the three sessions of this committee. In general, the Committee on Contributed Papers is interested in research reports which can be read in fifteen minutes.

The article presents information on the Royal Society Catalogue as an index to Nineteenth Century American Science. The Royal Society Catalogue of Scientific Papers is investigated in terms of its coverage of American science journals and American scientists. The Royal Society Catalogue serves today as an indispensable aid for the historian of nineteenth century science. The Royal Society Catalogue lists in the front of volume 1 all the journals indexed; additions and corrections appear in subsequent volumes. Included in that list are the places of publication; it was an easy task, therefore, to determine which were American journals. The number of journals in each decade approximates the general publication pattern demonstrated by the tabulation of American entries in Bolton's Catalogue (referred to earlier), which showed an acceleration in the number of new scientific periodicals.

This article presents information on congresses and conventions on various issues held in the U.S. as of December 1916. The Twenty-ninth Annual Meeting of the American Economic Association will be held at Columbus, Ohio, December 27-30, 1916. The American Sociological Society, the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for Labor Legislation will meet at the same time and place. A meeting of the teachers of economics, sociology, and commerce, in the state of Iowa was held at the State University in Iowa City on October 6 and 7, 1916. On Wednesday evening, December 27, there will be a joint meeting of the four associations at which the annual presidents' addresses will be given. The subject for discussion at the Thursday morning session is "The Problem of Land Ownership." researcher Richard T. Ely will read the leading paper. On Thursday afternoon there will be papers by researcher H. C. Taylor on "Two Dimensions of Economic Productivity" and by researcher George von Tungein on "The Results of Some Rural Surveys in Iowa."

This article presents information on the activities of various sociological organizations and departments of sociology in universities in the U.S. "Rural Sociology," a new journal to be published quarterly, is being established this year by the Section on Rural Sociology of the American Sociological Society. The managing editor of this journal, which is to be published by The Louisiana State University Press, is T. Lynn Smith of Louisiana State University. The annual meeting of the Eastern Sociological Conference will be held on April 18 and 19 in New Haven, Connecticut. The central topic of the Conference will be Social Theory and the Social Order. The annual Spring meeting of the Ohio Sociological Society will be held in Columbus, Ohio, April 24 and 25, 1936. The Pacific Sociological Society held its Seventh Conference, together with Coast Economists, at Mills College in Oakland, California, December 27-28. In September 1935, E. D. Tetreau, formerly analyst with the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and Associate Professor of Rural Sociology at Ohio State University, accepted a position at the University of Arizona as rural sociologist on The Experiment Station staff.

Our own Kenneth Boulding, in The Organizational Revolution, profoundly observed the rapid growth of "associations" of one form or another; and with that insight, peculiar to economists, commented on the many factors that accounted for this phenomenon. There were "supply and demand" elements, and all of them contributed to the overall pattern that made for more and more organizations. The American Finance Association is one of these, and is currently a robust thirty years of age--in the prime of life--and the proud parent of its illustrious offspring, The Journal of Finance, now beginning its twenty-fifth volume. Most members, and there are currently more than 5,000 members and subscribers of various categories, are only dimly aware, at best, of the beginnings and evolution of the Association, for no formal history has ever been printed. A conference paper on the Definitions Committee is presented. The Committee attempts to come to uniform consensus in the usage of terminology used in marketing. Each of the terms is divided into a category according to its meaning. The author states that the work is an ongoing effort and therefore is not perfect and subject to change. A variety of terms are presented, all listed alphabetically.

The article presents an update on the Academy of Management and news related to business education in the U.S. as of September 1965. The Academy of Management Silver Anniversary Program will meet at the Warwick Hotel in New York City on December 27 to 29, 1965. The University of Southern California is planning a new organizational scheme for the Business School. Thomas H. Patten Jr. has been appointed Professor of Management at the University of Detroit.

The article presents a reply to the comments made by Herbert Hill on the paper, Unions and the Negro Community, published in the January 1964 issue of the "Industrial and Labor Relations Review." According to the author of the paper, the commentary has taken issues with three points: First there is the issue of whether or not Hill was stopped by committee members from testifying before the U.S. House subcommittee. Second, whether or not the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's effort to secure de-certification of anti-Negro trade unions failed. Third, whether or not the charge by Ernest Holmes that the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) barred him from membership and followed a policy of limiting the number of Negroes admitted to membership was withdrawn on the basis of a joint stipulation where the union agreed to continue its nondiscrimination policies. The author states that he has no disagreement with Hill on the question of decertifying criminatory unions. Hill claims that the stipulation ordered the ILGWU to do precisely what an investigation commissioner had ordered it to do earlier, but his quotation from the New York Times on July 2, 1962 does not support his contention.
