SUMMARY Animal trypanosomiasis continues to present one of the most complex and serious problems in Africa, which is unlikely to be solved only by removal of the vector and control of the disease. Agricultural development of tsetse-infested lands must be reconciled with conservation needs to ensure long-term optimum productivity of these lands. With this in mind all natural resources present therein have to be considered in the framework of multidisciplinary land use planning. The sustained yield utilization of game animals as a naturally existing traditional source of meat may be regarded as a legitimate and productive form of land use. Destruction of this resource in favour of cattle development can only be justified on sound ecological, sociological and economic grounds. The active and open-minded participation of veterinarians in these land-use considerations is essential, and thus heavy responsibility for the future of Africa’s vast savannah woodlands will rest with the veterinary profession.

A number of interesting undescribed species of Coleoptera have accumulated in my cabinet, principally as the result of my own trips to the western parts of the country. The description of several of these follow, care having been taken to avoid describing forms belonging to genera of great extent which have not been recently monographed

This short paper is critically analyzing the debate of natural resource utilization in Nepal at a new political scenario. The paper presented a view of differences against a type of intellectuals who claim the ownership of natural resources to a limited community residing in limited geography in New Nepal while neglecting majority of people who is responsible to safeguard it since ancient time. 1) The development of wook-chip industry in Japan was originated in the shortage of timber for wood-pulp industry. Today wood-chips exceed all the other materials put together as raw material of pulp industry in this country. Therefore it is natural that the development of wood-chip industry is conditioned mostly by pulp industry and partially by fiber board industry which is closely connected with the former.2) The wood-chip factories are generally small in scale, and most of them are operated as a subsidiary business of saw-mills or furniture industries. But in Tohoku and Hokkaido the scale of the chip industry is larger than in other districts. There the materials of wood-chips are supplied not only from saw-mills, but also directly from forest areas, especially in the cases of specialized wood-chip industry.3) Wood-chip factories are distributed in the vicinity of saw-mills or forests. Moreover, they are located near pulp factories. Wood-chips are transported by trucks specially converted for that purpose.4) So, most of the wood-ship factories are controlled by the management of large pulp or fiber-board companies.5) The supply of chip material from each saw-mill is small in quantity. So the shortage of chips must be supplied with chips from the forests originally for firewood or charcoal.6) Demand of wood forwood-chips affects forestry, but the supply of materials for wood-chip industry is unsteady because of the incompleteness of forest roads.

In order to assess the trend in the body load of organochlorine pesticide residues in Great Britain, between July 1965 and June 1967 samples of fat were taken during routine necropsies on 247 subjects over 3 years old and on 44 stillborn or premature babies and infants below the age of 3. The levels of the three main pesticides, B.H.C., dieldrin, and D.D.T., were lower than those found in an earlier survey carried out in 1963 and 1964. No marked differences were observed in levels throughout Britain, but the levels in man were higher than those in women. Britain compares favourably with other countries in which similar surveys have been done.

On some 1938 postage stamps of Czechoslovakia are shown the smoking chimneys of factories. These stamps were not issued in support of a campaign against air pollution, but instead were intended to be symbolic of industry and prosperity. To many people of the world this picture still seems true of life, whereas actually, man has so harnessed the energy symbolized by the smoking chimney that the resulting air pollution has become a problem which erodes the prosperity of nations, undermines their health, and even modifies the very physical and biological environments in which we all live.

In a national prevalence study of multiple sclerosis (M.S.) in the Republic of South Africa based on census day 1960 there were 118 individuals with M.S. who were born in Northern Europe (United Kingdom and other parts of North and Central Europe) and who had emigrated to the Republic by 1960. Their prevalence rate was 49 per 100,000 immigrants in comparison with a prevalence of 11 per 100,000 among native-born English-speaking white South Africans.To study the possible effect of age at immigration it was necessary to relate the M.S. immigrants to the appropriate denominator-the population at risk according to age at immigration. The population at risk by age at immigration has been estimated by two methods in an indirect fashion with the assistance of the Bureau of Census (1960) and by surveys of the population at risk 1968-9. Both studies suggest that the risk of developing M.S. was reduced to less than a third of the expected risk among those who immigrated under the age of 15 or 16.This study is further evidence that M.S. is an acquired exogenous disease, the precise nature of which is still not certain but, according to present knowledge, has as its leading contender the class of slow, latent, or temperate viruses.

The so-called Akita-Sugi, the cryptomeria in the natural forests of the Akita district, were used for manufacturing special goods, with its lumber of high quality. But nowadays, decrease of the natural cryptomeria exerts an influence upon its manufacture-manufacturing meiboku (precious wood), tarumaru (wood for a cask).Moreover, the high reputation of such woodworks in the markets encourages the development of the manufacture.
