The remaining maps are also very well executed and colored, mostly by hand, a few in colored litho. In recent years, this atlas has become rare in the trade. This is the only atlas that Garnier produced, according to Phillips. Tooley lists an 1860 edition. Shows capitals, railroads, major cities and towns., This 1859 edition was published by Charles Desilver, copyright dates have been updated to 1859 or 1860, and was most likely issued in late 1859 or early 1860, as opposed to the previous 1859 edition that was published by Cushing & Bailey of 362 Market Street in Baltimore, with almost all copyrights dated 1856 (see: #4557.000). The maps bear the copyright and imprint of Charles Desilver 714 Chesnut Street. Changes from the 1859 edition includes a new map of Pennsylvania, two double page maps - map of Kansas by W.H. Holmes, and map of Mexico, with no pagination, as well as a double page map of Northern Italy which replaces map of Sardinia (Pl. 63), also various updates to individual maps. Maps in full color. Title page includes the vignette of the "First Landing of Columbus in the New World". Atlas includes 78 plates, some double page. Bound in half red leather brown paper covered boards., P6135.

The maps are well done, slightly smaller than the contemporary Brue and Lapie maps (except in the case of the double sheet maps), and with the North American maps perhaps not quite as detailed as the Brue and Lapie maps. Nonetheless, the entire atlas achieves a beautiful overall effect. This copy with the maps bound on long edges, unfolded with large margins. Twelve of the maps are double sheets. The maps are dated 1824 to 1826. Vivien was born in 1802 and died in 1897. This was his first atlas published. Outline color. Engraved. Colored by state. Meridians Washington and London. Relief shown with hachures., This is a very unusual Lucas atlas - according to Foster, only two copies are known. The engraved title page shows a globe and books on a table, with pages open listing Lucas' products: "Drawing Materials of every kind, Paper of all sizes, Mathematical Instruments, Globes, Maps, and Atlases of every description suitable for Colleges and Schools constantly for sale by the Publisher." It has 31 of the Tanner and Harrison engraved maps of the continents and foreign countries that appeared in the (1815) and (1816) "New And Elegant General Atlas" (only Netherlands bears Lucas' imprint, engraved by Young & Delleker, and is basically the same as the map that appears in the 1823 "General Atlas Containing Distinct Maps..." ). Of the remaining 36 maps, 8 are of South America and the West Indies and are unchanged in the 1823 atlas; the other 28 maps are in many cases early states of the new U.S. maps that appear in the 1823 atlas and replace the Tanner engraved U.S. maps of 1815 and 1816 atlases. They all have Lucas' imprint and show various engravers, Welch, Young & Delker, Cone & Freeman, Kneass, and Hufty. Compared to the early 1823 atlas (our #4584), 16 of the 28 U.S. maps are earlier issues, with only one being a later issue - New Hampshire shows Merrimack County (1823) which does not appear on the early 1823 atlas map (this was probably drawn in anticipation of creation). Of particular note are: Louisiana, a double page map engraved by Harrison and "Reduced from W. Darby's Four Sheet Map" which is dated 1817 as does not show Alabama or Arkansas Territory; and a map of "North Western and Michigan Territories" which is the same base map as the 1823 "Michigan Ter." but shows a much smaller Michigan in a configuration that Paullin dates as 1819 with a large North Western Territory extending to the west. Karpinski 94 incorrectly dates this map as "certainly as late as 1824" while mentioning that Phillips dates it 1819 (?). We cannot find the Phillips entry, but we bel, Foster, p. 190; Sabin sub 42611; Karpinski 94.

Includes historical text at the foot of map., Luffman's atlas consists of 2 volumes, including engraved hand colored detailed plans of various cities, harbors and ports around the world, Luffman also included maps of some countries, regions, and islands. Showing roads, railroads, cities, towns, fortifications, rivers and canals. They are engraved and published by John Luffman between 1799 and 1802, often with numbered key. Includes index to each volume and historical text at foot of maps. Relief shown by hachures, pictorially and depth shown by soundings. Bound in light green paper covered boards, with title "J. “This atlas was issued as part of Humboldt and Bonpland’s Voyage aux régions équinoxiales du Nouveau Continent fait en 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803 et 1804 (Paris, 1808-1834), which was published in over thirty volumes over several decades…This atlas is important for many reasons, and its illustrations showed Europe and the entire world new scientific information for the first time. Humboldt’s groundbreaking exploration of the Orinoco River, for example, is delineated on two maps, one of which was the first to establish the precise location of and to show the connection between Rio Orinoco and Rio Negro, a question that had baffled geographers for three centuries…The Orinoco river maps are supplemented by maps of other rivers, many accurately depicted for the first time. Also significant are the profiles and maps of mountain ranges, which are depicted with scientific precision showing new information in novel ways. Many of the profiles are dramatically hand colored… The dramatic volcano plates are supplemented by several large-scale maps, which are masterful depictions of land forms. These studies were crucial to Humboldt’s later conclusions about the origin and nature of these natural structures and constitute one of his major contributions to the field of geology. Humboldt mapped many areas in an accurate fashion for the first time. Because riverbeds and stream courses interested him immensely, those features are often shown in great detail on the maps, which also depict other natural and man-made features, such as mountains, missions, roads, and settlements. His map of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, for example, was from the latest available surveys recently done by the Mexican government (Humboldt was for fifty years an advocate of an interoceanic connection between the Atlantic and Pacific). The Cuba map is also an updated version and reflects his recent explorations of the island. Despite a few secondary sources, most of the maps are based directly on his extensive travels and observations during the course of his explorations. Perhaps the most remarkable map in this atlas is the first printing of a manuscript map that harks back to the very earliest European cartographic representation of the New World. This is the manuscript world map made by Spanish conquistador, cartographer, and explorer Juan de la Cosa (ca. 1460-1509), who sailed with the first three voyages of Columbus and was the owner of the Santa María. This portolan world chart incorporates lands discovered in America up to 1500 during expeditions by Spanish, Portuguese, and English expeditions to America. Juan de la Cosa’s mappa mundi is painted in ink and colors on ox hide (93 x 183 cm) and richly decorated. His map is believed to be “the earliest extant map showing any part of the continent of North America” (Schwartz & Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, Plate 1, pp. 18-19)… Finally, going back to the beginning, the emblematic frontispiece engraving Humanitas. Literæ. Fruges (after the art work of artist Barthélemy Joseph Fulcran Roger) is not just another pretty, classical picture, but rather an expression of Humboldt’s deep philosophical concept of America and Europe expressed in iconography.” (Dorothy Sloan, Auction 22, 2009). In 31 deliveries, closely corresponds to Meyer's Zeittungs und Groschen Atlas. With a engraved title page, index, and 123 steel engraving outline hand colored maps dated between 1849-1852. Although all the maps in this atlas are not individually dated, the title page and maps were often updated while the imprint with the date was not, causing confusion to the exact date for some of the maps. Atlas includes 123 maps of old geography, maps of modern geography, and maps of physical geography. Bound in marbled paper covered boards. Map numbering skips around from country to country with no obvious logic, and does not correspond with the index listing all the maps. The maps are of the highest Meyer quality, with detail information, showing political and administrative boundaries, cities, towns, canals, forts, roads, railroads, rivers and mountains. It was indeed an atlas of "choice" of the publisher and as such consists of a wide variety of maps that Andriveau-Goujon favored to include at the time. It consists of ancient and modern geographical maps, engraved and hand colored, in 42 sheets some folded. Dated 1764-1830. Bound in brown marbled paper over board with green leather spine. Shows the old world with the spreading and development of the different peoples. Including a double hemisphere and solar system, Holy Land, the ancient world, Europe, France (on double and one-half sheets), the Americas, The United States features the Confederate Territory of Arizona, Africa and Asia. The last sheet includes a large comparative view of the main mountains and over the main rivers of the world. Maps embellished with engraved cartouche, geographical, agricultural, physical information, tables and text. Some maps in Latin. In full color by region surrounded by text., This was the first American Atlas that was modeled on Le Sage's plan of having explanatory text surrounding the maps. 1st Edition; Fielding Lucas engraved most of the maps. The 1823 edition was unchanged in most copies, a few have minor map updates, and one (see our copy) has all of the 1827 edition maps while still retaining the 1823 title page and most of the text. The 1827 edition includes much new material, with all the maps and text updated, except for the Washington, D.C., and Michigan maps. A French edition by Buchon was published in 1825, an abridged London edition in 1823 (see our copies), and a German edition by C.F. Weiland in 1824-1828 (P1225, Espenhorst 1.6.3). The maps are beautifully drawn and colored. Lucas went on to publish his own General Atlas in 1823, using similar maps but without the text. Full color by region., The first issue by Greenleaf, being a reissue of David Burr's 1836 edition of A New Universal Atlas. A new map of Texas is added. There are several changes from the Burr 1836 issue, primarily new railroads and some new counties. With the exception of the map of Illinois, Burr's imprint is removed from all the maps, as well as the copyright notice below the neat line . Full color. Atlas is bound in half leather black paper covered boards with a circular label reading "Jeremiah Greenleaf's Universal Atlas"; the spine has "Atlas" stamped in gold., cf P784., P742-60.

In outline color by region., The first edition, first state (see our first edition, second state for comparison) of Lucas' best general atlas and the finest general atlas produced in the U.S. at that time (In asserting this we omit the Tanner and Finley American Atlases of 1823 and 1826 respectively because they were not general atlases - cartographically they may have been superior to the Lucas, but not as broad in coverage). The quality of the engraving (most of the U.S. maps were engraved by B.T. Welch, others by Young & Delker, J.V.N. Throop, Cone & Freeman, and Kneass) is superb, the detail is very fine, and the coloring is delicate and elegant. While the same Lucas drawn base maps were used in this atlas and the 1822 American Atlas by Carey and Lea (and thereby created strained relations between him and Carey and Lea), the maps in this Lucas Atlas are far superior in quality - Welch reengraved many of the maps for Lucas that Young & Delker had engraved for Carey and Lea. It is interesting to note that the Carey and Lea maps are usually earlier states of the Lucas maps. The Atlantic Islands and the West Indies Island Maps are mostly copied from Thomson's General Atlas of 1817 (see our copy) as is the Mountains and Rivers plate (reduced). Many maps are derived from the earlier Lucas Atlas of 1815-17 which copied the Oddy Atlas maps for the non U.S. state maps. Some copies have solid color. Maps of Mexico, Canada, and N. America (updated by Lucas in the arctic), are copied from Arrowsmith's General Atlas of 1823 (first ed. was 1817). The classical maps derive from Melish's Atlas of Ancient Geography of 1815. Kapp states other eds. issued 1840 and 1844., Unusual presentation in two large elephant folio volumes with the maps unfolded. Covers are three quarter leather, marbled paper covered boards with "Hall's Atlas Part 1" and "Part 2" respectively, stamped in gilt on the front and spine. Wheat mentions the United States, Mexico and Guatimala, and British North America maps: he declares them up to date, making good use of the Lewis and Clark and Long maps. Interestingly for a British cartographer, Hall shows Maine and Oregon with the most ambitious U.S. claims as to territory. Graphically, these maps are very striking and beautiful; with outline color. Hall did a revised edition in the 1850-57 period (Phillips 821). The Australia maps are also mentioned by Tooley (Australia and Antarctica). In 1840 he collaborated with A. & C. Black to produce Black's General Atlas -- however, those maps are somewhat smaller and not as impressive as these maps. The maps are dated variously from 1827 to 1830, with the title page dated 1830. The second edition, the first appearing in 1840. Only the 1840 and 41 editions were engraved exclusively by Hall. Starting with the 1844 edition, Hall was joined by Hughes and other engravers. Colombia, republic, is shown by snakes, monkeys, and washing and preparing indigo. The constitutional monarchy of Austro-Hungary is illustrated by Bohemian glass blowers. Sweden and Norway, constitutional monarchies, show exporting grain, fishing by net, and lumbering in the snow., Exquisite illustrations and brilliant color. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington., 1 atlas: 55 maps, Table of contents and geographical tables. Same maps as Mitchell New School Atlas. This is an interesting atlas of multi-state maps. Maps are engraved, full hand colored, printed on thick paper bound with cloth covers and half leather with "Reference Atlas For Colleges, Libraries, Families, And Counting Houses" in embossed gilt. The geographical tables at the end of the volume includes variety of geographical information of the world and the United States. Mitchell began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century., P847.

We can find no record of this atlas, other than the Sabin reference and the Oceanie map in Tooley Aust. Monin and Fremin did a smaller world atlas, offered by Hudson in 1988. These maps are large and impressive. They were published with Montemont's 46 volume History of Voyages, although Sabin calls for an Atlas of 22 maps, whereas this has 38 maps on 36 sheets. Maps are without color and bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with "Atlas De L'Histoire Des Voyages" stamped in gold on the spine., Sabin 50113-4;cf Tooley Aust. p122.

David Williams is sometimes considered to be the author, but Phillips lists this under Jones and Hamilton. The North American maps, with the exception of the New England states and New York and Pennsylvania, are updated reissues of the maps used in Rogers and Johnston 1857 Atlas of the United States, although they are often configured in different groups, indicating that they were copied from the 1869 third edition of the Rogers and Johnston U.S. wall map that is from the same earlier plates, but updated, that the 1857 atlas was made from (see our #5402). First edition, second issue, with the important Lord Proprietors map of Carolina by Moxon replacing the Arx Carolina plate and the Virginia pars Australis map of the first issue, with the addition of a map of Barbados, and with the plate list as in the first issue still listing Arx Carolina and Virginia pars Australis but not listing the Lords Proprietors Carolina or Barbados. This copy includes both the Arx Carolina plate and the Virginia pars Australis map, tipped in later. The work is an English translation of Arnold Montanus “De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld,” but with a number of additions concerning New England, New France, Maryland and Virginia. Many new maps and views were added. The Moxon map of Carolina is the first large format map of the newly established colony of Carolina. “America” was Ogilby’s finest foreign work; over 150 authors are credited although Montanus is lacking. “When it came to North America, particularly, he abandoned Montanus entirely for his own closer sources. His work used superior type and larger and finer paper than Montanus. Clearly some form of at least tacit agreement existed between Montanus and Ogilby as he acquired the same plates to illustrate his work. This is itself unusual as Ogilby was renowned for providing his own ‘sculptures’. The reasons may lie in the fact that the project clearly was already an expensive one, and that the work had been promised for some time and further delay was undesirable. The first map in the book, of the whole of America, was one of five plates provided by Ogilby himself. We may speculate that this was because Montanus did not actually own the Schagen plate, or that Ogilby wished to insert more English nomenclature” (Burden).
