President Carl C. Taylor is planning for a section on Contributed Papers for the next annual meeting of the American Sociological Society to be held in Chicago from December 28 to 30. This Section is designed particularly for those younger members of the Society, including graduate students, who have not yet had an opportunity to appear on the program in other sections. Therefore, urging that all such papers be submitted not later than November 1, in order that the Committee may have adequate time to consider them carefully and make a selection to be presented at the meeting. If there are sufficient papers of merit there will be two sections of probably three papers each. The article presents information about the program of the American Economic Association Meeting. In programs of the annual meetings of the American Economic Association for the five years 1950-54, persons from the economics departments of fifteen academic institutions delivered 114 out of a total of 210 papers, or 54.3 percent. When papers delivered by people outside the academic field are excluded it is found that of 156 papers originating in colleges and universities these fifteen institutions were responsible for 73.1 percent. Only a few organizations outside the academic field were able to reach the more than two papers category. There was a substantial amount of duplication by individuals from "big 15" universities. Sixteen persons delivered two or more papers, accounting for a total of 37 of 161 papers originating in colleges and universities. These sixteen scholars also served as discussants 6 times. Two of them delivered as many as four papers each in five years, full staffs of only eleven colleges and universities did as well or better.

The article presents an abstract of a paper presented by University of the Philippines associate professor Zeus A. Salazar on March 23, 1972, as part of the Philippine Sociological Society's "Social Issues '72" public lecture series. The first point of view sees Philippine problems rooted in the nature of man in general, and of the Filipino in particular. The Filipino is tainted, both by nature aid by the historical heritage of a vanquished race. Basically this point of view is psychological, and takes no account of structural, systemic features of the environment. The second point of view, the scientistic, draws on four kinds of findings the economistic, the political-scientistic, the socioanthropological and the historicist-humanist. To the economistic mind, the Philippines' problems may be traced either to a state of stagnation induced by the malignant action of certain external forces, or alternatively to a transitional phase on the route to progress with the help of those nine external forces. The problem is, in essence, that of articulating in the most efficient but democratic manner the needs and aspirations of the national community, of correcting a maladjustment in the interplay between political man and his institutions.

The article reports on the development and use of behavioral objectives for improving the field experiences in student teaching presented by the Directors of Student Teaching at the State of Illinois Colleges and Universities, both private and public institutions. A form of position paper regarding this importance issue was made to present the opinions of the directors. The behavioral objective is to examine narrowly the work of the beginning teacher and focus attention on defined skills and behaviors to be achieved. The development and use of behavioral objectives are one approach on the problem of making pertinent efforts on improving the teaching education.

The article focuses on the study which attempts to employ curricular reformation in undergraduate biological education. The study is done through the use of two exercises, which are both part of a course in developmental biology at the University of Toledo. The first exercise is "Cytodifferentiation: Formation of Multinucleated Myotubes in vitro," in which students are asked to observe changes in the experimented cells. The second exercise is "Cell Aggregation: Formation of Multicellular Systems," in which students are asked to investigate one or two influences on aggregation. Through these exercises, the students were able to realize that more exercises should be adapted in other subjects as well for learning purposes.

The relationship between the quantity and quality of scientific output of 120 university physicists was studied. Although these two variables are highly correlated, some physicists produce many papers of little significance and others produce a Jew papers of great significance. The responses of the community of physicists to these distinct patterns of research publication were investigated. Quality of output is more significant than quantity in eliciting recognition through the receipt of awards, appointment to prestigious academic departments, and being widely known to one's colleagues. The reward system operates to encourage creative scientists to be highly productive, to divert the energies of less creative physicists into other channels, and to produce a higher correlation between quantity and quality of output in the top departments than in the weaker departments. The article presents information about announcements made about 1968-69 "Student Paper Competition" of the periodical "Ohio Valley Sociological Society" (OVSS). The Publications Committee of the OVSS is pleased to announce its annual competition for student papers from colleges and universities in the region. Two awards are given, one for a paper by an undergraduate student and one for a paper by a graduate student. Papers must have been written for a class or seminar; maximum length is 5,000 words. The Publications Committee of the Society will serve as the reviewing board. Usual scholarly criteria will be employed in judging the papers. Announcement of the winning papers will be made at the annual meetings of the Society May 1-3, 1969. The article presents the details of the 1971 Student paper competition. The co-winner for the undergraduate category was Karen Binford, The University of Akron, whose title was "An analysis of the effect of intelligence on the Relationship between socio-economic status and academic achievement." The winner of the graduate category was Kenneth E. Hornback, of Michigan State University, whose topic was "Toward a theory of involvement propensity for collective behavior."

The article presents discussions by economists on some papers that are published in the May 1, 1970 issue of the journal "American Economic Review." The author states that the university is a part of the existing socioeconomic system with specific functions, among which that are mentioned by authors of papers published in the present issue of the journal, to socialize students as wage-workers is only one. Another is to inculcate into the student, a potential future leader, member of the intellectual elite, teacher of future students, precisely the point of view that underlies economics curriculum. Authors of those papers follow with iron logic that the university is not going to accept, let alone promote, an alternative curriculum, which begins by rejecting, or calling into question all basic institutions, relations and results of the existing system. It is true that under stress, such as that which developed on many campuses last year, powers-that-be will make concessions and often will promise more concessions. It is significant that economics department refused to recognize it and academic authorities denied permission for it to abandon the grading system, which authors criticized so effectively in their papers.

The article presents information on the 49th annual meeting of the American Economic Association, lists people that have been added to the American Economic Association since August 1, 1936, and reports about appointments and resignations in different U.S. universities. The American Economic Association's meeting that will take place from December 28-30, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, will see economists presenting papers on varied economic topics. Some people who became members of the association include: W.C. Bagley, H.B. Baker, W.D. Barlow and E.C. Burris. Laurence J. Ackerman has joined as an instructor in insurance at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. James P. Adams has been made the acting president of Brown University.

As a result of a request from the City Club of Denver in September, 1924, a study of the newsboys of the city was made by the department of sociology of the University of Denver. The object of the survey was to find the facts, without any preconceived notions, in regard to the newsboys, their ages, nationalities, schools records, incomes, their hours of work, home conditions, delinquencies; the occupations of their parents, their parents attitudes toward their work. The results, while by no means startling, were of sufficient value to warrant their preservation and passing on to other cities. In order to have some basis for study, a schedule was prepared which covered the items mentioned above and several others besides. The work was done by seven students from the department of sociology. Four sources of information were available and the workers were distributed according to the size of the tasks. First, there was the street survey. This included all newsboys under eighteen who sold papers on the streets of Denver. Of course, a few newsboys were missed, but this survey includes all of the regular downtown newsboys who sell in daytime and most of those who sell at night. The next source of information was the homes of the boys. The home visit was prepared for by telling the boy in advance of the workers visit.

The second world congress of Sociology will be organized by the International Sociological Association (ISA) under the auspices of UNESCO in the city of Liége, Belgium, from August 24-September 1,1953. Sociologists of all countries of the world, professional, research workers and students, are invited to take part in this Congress and are asked to enter into contact with the ISA Secretariat for registration and detailed information. Contributed research papers are invited for the 1953 meeting of the Eastern Sociological Society, tentatively scheduled for April 18-19 or 25-26, 1953. Papers should report empirical findings of completed research or specific methodological developments. Because of program limitations, general theoretical analyses not based on specific research cannot be accepted. professor Benjamin Keeley has joined the Department of Social Science of Illinois State Normal University and is teaching The Family and Introduction to Sociology, as well as assisting with freshman orientation courses in the social sciences.

The paper discusses the production of library catalogue cards, specifically treating the Columbia- Harvard-Yale Medical libraries Computerization Project. A description is provided of the bibliographic data input, general computer processing, and various output modes. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the applicability of Parsonian "pattern-variables" in defining a constructed type. Specification of boundaries or cutting-off points of role relationships in Weber's three types of authority systems, while an intriguing problem, is a project too great in scope for a short paper. Instead, for this preliminary attempt, a social system has been selected in which a few crucial role relationships define its character. It is also a system familiar to sociologists. The setting selected is the educational institution at the university level. The type to be defined, "the seat of learning," is perhaps the most "ideal" of ideal types. A number of other constructed type educational institutions might be isolated, e.g., "marriage markets," "sources of status," "diploma mills," or, perhaps, "campus playgrounds." Sets of role relationships could be specified to define any of these types. For purposes of illustration, however, the definition of one type will be sufficient. Four steps are involved in defining the constructed type: (1) selection of the crucial role pairs; (2) the definition of the chosen role relationships by use of the pattern-variables; (3) measurement of the pattern- variable choices; and (4) establishment of boundary points for the pattern-variables themselves. The most comprehensive review of modern Polish sociology written in English is probably Eileen Markley Znaniecki's paper, published in Twentieth Century Sociology. The present note adds to the meager knowledge of Polish sociology by summarizing and discussing briefly the 1957 and 1958 volumes of the Polish Sociological Review. On the whole, the 1957 volume is historical and discursive rather than sociological. The discussion articles mostly interpret ideas of other authors, quoting them frequently. Three of the ten articles are concerned with problems of education. The 1958 volume, containing nine papers plus reviews and news, is predominantly sociological, although several articles may be regarded as more historical than sociological. These papers give little information about the methodology used, and in none is there any indication that statistical analysis was employed. Finally, this paper also describes the careers of students who attended special preparatory courses and later pursued technical college curricula.

This paper presents the first empirical sociometric evidence of an international invisible college for information exchange. Using sociometric techniques and ratings of professional status as a researcher, a highly elite invisible college was identified which crossed international boundaries. Members of this elite group were found to be in relatively frequent contact with one another and were considered by the professional community in high energy physics, the context of this study, to be doing the most important work in the area. An important part of the information infra- structure of this invisible college consists of intermediaries who perform a gatekeeping and linkage function. Selected differences in communication behavior between the key people of the invisible college and the intermediaries is noted briefly. Also selected communication differences are noted between members of the invisible college and a matched sample wholly outside this special information network. The article provides information about developments in various universities and colleges in the field of sociology. Two papers of W. A. Anderson of Cornell University on Rural Social Participation and the Family Life Cycle have been published by the Agricultural Experiment Station as Memoirs 314 and 318. They deal with the relationship of stages in the family life cycle to formal and informal family participation. He has also published a study entitled "Social Change and an Urban Fringe Area." Anderson is working with city and town officials in Ithaca, New York on problems of city expansion and fringe-area incorporation. A Study of Some Factors Associated with Family Informal Participation has been issued as Department Bulletin 36. Department Bulletin 39, "Eight Case Illustrations of Low Formal Participation," and Department Bulletin 40, "Eight Case Illustrations of High Formal Participation," are other recent publications. He has also revised the bibliography of the department. The Government of Brazil, in June, conferred upon T. Lynn Smith of the University of Florida, the Order of the Southern Cross. Smith has spent several years in Brazil, on assignment by the U. S. Department of State, as a visiting professor at the University of Brazil, and as advisor on agrarian reform to the Minister of Agriculture and the National Commission on Agrarian Policy.

The tenth annual meeting of the American Association of University Instructors in Accounting was especially noteworthy because of the able papers given on the subject "Research Work in Universities." Inspired by these papers the present writer decided to ascertain approximately what graduate work in applied economics the American universities were doing. As there were no data available on this subject, a survey was started. This paper is the result of the survey conducted by the Association. The basic courses in commercial law are so fundamental that practically all graduate schools of business offer them. The commercial law courses are 8.4% of the total applied economic courses in non-urban schools and 6.2% in urban schools. This variation is due to the difference in the total number of courses offered in non-urban and urban schools as the number of commercial law courses offered is practically constant. The unusual number of commercial law courses offered at American University and Pennsylvania University is doubtless due to local conditions, the excellent standing of the graduate law school at the former and unusual complexities of the State law code at the latter. Business management ranks first or is tied for first among the applied economic groups in five out of the twenty-seven schools.

The article presents news and information from the Department of Social Anthropology, Karnatak University, Dharwar, India. Senor Roberto Etchepareborda, the Argentinian Ambassador to India, on October 18, 1963, read a paper on the Gaucho literature of Argentina. Some excerpts of the paper are as follows. The paper reads that under Spanish rule, Argentina was undivided, and on the broad pampas roamed unnumbered wild horses and cattle, descendants of those brought over by the early settlers. These were the greatest source of wealth and gave rise to a body of fearless riders called Gauchos that made business of hunting wild cattle for their hides and tallow or driving them to "estancias" to be branded and gentled. Gauchos were the backbone of the armies. They fought the Portuguese invaders in 1771 and helped in 1807 to retake Buenos Aires from the British. A list of the visitors to the University has been provided. An acknowledgement from the editor to sociologists who helped in the preparation of notes and news section, has also been given.

The article presents a reply to the paper titled "A comment on "Anomy,"" by Leo Srole, published in the October 1, 1965 issue of the journal "American Sociological Review." According to the author, Srole understandably has a vested interest in the subject of anomy, but this scarcely justifies his patronizing manner of "welcoming" new work on the subject by others, or his focus on questions that divert attention from the possible significance of results. Srole directs the bulk of his critique to the representativeness of samples. This is disappointing, for the sampling issue, as raised by him, has little bearing on the warranty of findings. What matters is not whether samples are perfect cross-sections of their respective universes, but whether their deficiencies make results spurious or misleading. This he has not shown. The author states that under-representativeness of the grade school sample and the corresponding over-representativeness of the college sample, moreover, are between 9 and 12 per cent, rather than the larger figure that Srole implies. On age, sex, race, rural-urban residence, region, religion, income and party preference, sample characteristics are nearly identical with those of other qualified national samples, or close enough to satisfy all but the most captious critics.

The article presents the author's comments on some teachers who taught him the methodology of teaching. The author says that the most inspiring teachers have employed the most unconventional and the least formal methods. One of the best teachers the author came across was Georg Friedrich Knapp at the University of Strassburg. Knapp used to put a complete analysis of his lectures on the board. This analysis itself was a work of art. With this outline and his exposition of the subject, including the anecdotes with which he illustrated it, one felt that one never need look at a book on the subject again. That course was an immensely stimulating introduction to and orientation in peasant economy and peasant life. Another of the author's teachers was William James and the author learned about methods of teaching from him. What made his lectures memorable were the occasional and seemingly casual remarks with which James would from time to time illuminate the subject of discussion. The most memorable event in any of James' courses was his reading in out of his paper he had just finished writing entitled "A Certain Blindness in Human Beings." James' purpose in writing this paper was theoretic rather than practical or pedagogical.

Since the nineteenth century, American geographers have applied mathematical concepts to geographic research, and they have increased the level of mathematical sophistication associated with their research. To some extent geographers have traditionally been interested in developing methods of quantitative geographic analysis; however, it was not until the turn of the twentieth century that there was concentrated effort to develop special programs of quantitative methods training and to expand the scope of quantitative geographic research. This paper attempts to examine certain aspects of expansion of quantitative methods training and research for the period 1954–1965. Since the early 1950's the number of major geography departments offering specialized training in quantitative methodology has risen from three percent to over seventy-eight percent. Today many departments require training in statistics and mathematics and roughly one third of the major American doctoral training centers now allow their students to substitute mathematics training for one foreign language requirement. This trend is paralleled by an increasingly large number of quantitative dissertations and quantitative research papers found in a sample of the major geographic journals. Our studies indicate that these trends originated at the University of Washington, and certain Midwestern universities, but after a short period of time, the quantitative revolution spread throughout American geographic centers. This article reports that Stuart Altman and Anthony C. Fisher of the Department of Economics are engaged in an economic analysis of the supply of nurses. Stuart Altman will prepare a paper for the second conference on the economics of health to be held at Johns Hopkins University in December 1968.

This paper presents a qualitative discussion of the potential "costs" and "benefits" associated with the use of PPBS in a public system of higher education. The "costs," both monetary and nonmonetary, resulting from the introduction of PPBS are acknowledged to be significant. However, the inadequacies of existing budgeting techniques as aids in decision-making and problems of resource allocation are severe. These limitations are identified and discussed. Several recent articles and studies have suggested the possibility of applying Planning - Programming-Budgeting (PPB), systems analysis and other advanced management concepts to the problems of long-range resource planning and decision making in institutions of higher learning. This paper discusses these techniques in the context of a university with multiple educational and service missions. There are no inherent difficulties in viewing the educational process as a multi-stage, matrix transformation process. Systems analytic concepts can assist in the articulation of institutional programs and objectives, contribute to the goal of balanced resource allocations, and improve coordination among decentralized university departments. The article presents an update on the Academy of Management and news related to business education in the U.S. as of September 1965. The Academy of Management Silver Anniversary Program will meet at the Warwick Hotel in New York City on December 27 to 29, 1965. The University of Southern California is planning a new organizational scheme for the Business School. Thomas H. Patten Jr. has been appointed Professor of Management at the University of Detroit.

This paper, based on a sample of 509 faculty members, examines the effects of institutional prestige and professional prestige on loyalty to the institution, it is found that those with high institutional prestige and those with low professional prestige are more loyal than their counterparts, and that those with a combination of high institutional prestige and low professional prestige are the most loyal while those with low institutional prestige and high professional prestige are the least loyal. Attitudes toward economic conditions or colleagues do not differentiate the loyal from the disloyal, but feelings about integration in university life and the hope of finding conditions more favorable for research elsewhere do. This paper attempts to explain variation in the formalization of administrative practices current in the teaching departments of a large midwestern university. Variation was noted in the degree of formalization in the following practices: hiring procedures, evaluation of performers, and handling of unsatisfactory faculty members. This variation was analyzed to determine its relationship to: department size, frequency of decision making, department prestige, supply-demand ratio, and humanistic orientation. Frequency of decision making emerged as the most significant of these. Humanistic orientation was found to be associated with the subject matter taught by the department faculty and with degree of visibility of the training given by the department. Leading evolutionary biologists in America have been welcomed to participate with the recent papers. The contributors include Dean Amadon of he American Musesum of Natural History, George W. Beadle of the California, Alan A. Boyden of Rutgers University, Bayard H. Brattstrom of Adelphi College and others.

The article pays tribute to Scottish sociologist, professor and urban planner Sir Patrick Geddes. Modern events in Jewish life brought him confirmation of his general sociological principles. That the Jewish people in Palestine had turned to the soil as the foundation of the National Home made a tremendous appeal to him and that, at the moment when this effort was being successfully begun, the Jewish people should found their University on Mount Scopus, stirred his imagination, his realisation of that essential unity for which the Jewish people had striven throughout history. This idea dominated Geddes during these weeks of fecundation, and it was this idea that found expression in his design of the Great Hall that he planned for the University. In the first rough sketches that Geddes put on paper after the two weeks of seemingly sunless perambulation this concept at once took shape. Though Geddes modified it in detail in accordance with his detailed study of the building!land available and the nature of the site, the central idea--the University as an expression of the unity for which Israel had striven--remains the characteristic feature of his magnificent design for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

This article focuses on regular arts and crafts activities for handicapped children involving the use of their toes. The art education students at Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana have noted that toe painting is a suitable project for handicapped children. The activity is manipulated by the feet, toes and the balls of the feet. The art education students have assured that special education students need very little extra assistance in toe painting. The steps for toe painting are presented.

The article presents information about the book "Building Social Work Knowledge." This is a small but potent book, potent both because of the quality of its content and also because it sets the stage for further knowledge development. The book presents a series of five working papers for and proceedings of a conference on social work knowledge held under the auspices of the National Association of Social Workers. Eleven prominent social work practitioners and teachers came together to discuss social work knowledge with the help of a consultant Sidney Morganbesser, a professor of philosophy at Columbia University. The climate, tone, and range of this intensive conference and Morganbesser's catalytic counsel have been reported by a member of the group, Marjorie Murphy. The titles of the position papers indicate something about the quality and the scope of the conference. At the same time they map the discussions of the problem. Harriett M. Bartlett's "Characteristics of Social Work" sets the scope; it is followed by Alfred Kadushin's paper on "Assembling Social Work Knowledge."

The article focuses on a research conducted by the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Arnold R. Weber is writing a monograph on incomes policy with particular reference to the administration and impact of the wage-price freeze of 1971. His study with John F. Burton, Collective Bargaining in the Public Sector, is nearly completed. The study, which focuses on local level public sector bargaining, is part of the Brookings Institution's project, entitled Unionism and Collective Bargaining in the Public Sector. Robert J. Flanagan continues his research in the areas of incomes policy and racial discrimination in the labor market. A paper, "The U.S. Phillips Curve and International Unemployment Differentials," is forthcoming. He is currently preparing a paper dealing with racial wage and unemployment differentials for an OECD conference on discrimination in the labor market. Myron Roomkin is conducting a study of strike activity in the U.S. He is also completing a study of employer and union reactions to innovations in apprenticeship training programs.

The crucial issues in the administration of higher education embody the very purpose, function, and concept of each institution. The institution's administrative policies are based on the combined philosophy of many conflicting interest groups such as taxpayers, donors, administrators, faculty, students, staff, and users of university services. A function performed by the university which is receiving increasing attention and outside pressure is the formulation of admissions policy for newly entering students. This paper describes how the core portion of the undergraduate business program at Indiana University was revised to facilitate integration of basic functionally oriented decision making skills and thus help students gain a deeper understanding of the interdependence of business decisions. It relates, in essence, why and how a single computer-oriented case study which demanded a solution to a large-scale, unified finance-marketing-production problem was used at Indiana University, mentions how we plan to accomplish further integration of functional material, and provides some insight into student reaction to what was, in fact, a massive project from both student and administrative points of view. This article presents three years of experience of the author in developing a research laboratory which provides students with the opportunity to more closely approximate the work of a research sociologist. The goal of such a laboratory is to provide the facilities and personnel which will: allow the student to examine research ideas with the use of data; make computational problems easy to solve; allow for theoretical alterations; and reexamine new ideas in terms of further data-processing. The problems which face most faculty and their administrators are, how to set up a laboratory to accomplish these or similar goals. In the past, discussions on computerized education have presented elaborate computer systems and used computers as teaching machines. While these discussions are profitable for large universities with specialists in computer applications, they generally have not met the needs of the instructor in the smaller college setting who was not trained in computer use . This paper attempts to fill this gap with a programmatic statement of procedure.

This paper is an attempt to discuss the factors which the Dean of a College of Business should consider in making a decision regarding the inclusion of an undergraduate insurance program. Each dean will have his own ideas of the points he will emphasize, which, in turn, will influence his final decision. Given this author's own interests, academic background (insurance professor), type of institution represented (large public) and the economic-political climate (Florida). All have a major influence on the factors deemed important enough to be included in this discussion.

This article has shown something of the breadth and complexity of the field of higher education; and it has indicated some ways in which progress in research might be made. It may be remarked first that colleges and universities have not in the past been particularly interested in educational experimentation, nor in the investigation of their activities by scientific methods. One is inclined to regard many of the changes that have been reported in these papers as changes in underlying personality structure; not merely as changes in surface behavior. This seems the proper way to regard changes that have to do with the individual's health, maturity, and intellectual functioning.

University education for business is of recent origin. Forty years ago only one university in the U.S. had a school whose major purpose was to aid in equipping students for careers in the business world. Since then the growth in the number of these schools of university grade has been rapid. Today, thousands of students are attending courses which are classified as business courses in the colleges of commerce, finance and accounts and in the colleges of liberal arts. Accountancy as a business study has moved rapidly toward the front ranks of the business subjects during this period. The purpose of this paper is to endeavor to shed some light on the contents of accounting courses and on the problems of teaching accounting during the years when the subject was first offered in institutions of higher learning. The period to be covered will be limited to the two decades preceding 1903. This period represents about one-third of the time during which accounting has been taught in these institutions. To shorten the period would result in confining the paper to courses as taught in one or two institutions. During the early years of the new century the courses in accounting were beginning to assume more definite form and content and to increase in number, due partly to the growth of the CPA movement and partly to the growing consciousness of the increasing importance of business education and of accounting in particular.
