This article presents abstracts of papers presented at the Second Annual Meeting of the New Zealand Section of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) held at Auckland University on August 28, 1964, including "Dental-Health Status of Tokelau Islanders," "Effect of Fluoride and Soil Trace Elements on Tooth Morphology in Humans," and "Acid Mucopolysaccharides and the Mineralization of Dentin."

The article examines statistics on strikes in New Zealand during the 1950s and 1960s, and the relevance of the statistics to labor law and legislation. The article describes the history of government policy on industrial relations and conflict management in New Zealand. Characteristics of labor conflicts between 1952 and 1970 are detailed. Working conditions and wages are named as issues that lead to labor conflicts and strikes. The authors address the ability of law and legislation to resolve labor conflicts and prevent strikes.

Application of Wilkins' "delinquent generations" hypothesis to New Zealand Children's Court statistics for 1947-60 suggests that, as theorized, social disturbances associated with the Second World War (1939-1945) had affected certain cohorts of children born during or just before it, in such a way as to render them more likely than other children to appear before the Children's Court later in life. An independent method of analysis, based on the theory of normalization of variables with large means, leads to the same conclusion. it further shows that the results are highly significant in the sense of statistical theory. The hypothesis put forward by Wilkins, which has survived tests in England and Wales, Scotland, Denmark, and now New Zealand, is clearly a contribution of some importance to the understanding of international trends in delinquency. In Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, the parenteral administration of 200 to 250 mg of elemental iron * to Maori neonates was completely successful in preventing iron deficiency anemia of late infancy, whereas control cases generally developed moderate to severe iron deficiency anemia. The presence of anemia in control cases appears, to be related more to postnatal dietary intake of iron than to such antenatal factors as maternal parity and the presence or absence of adequate maternal iron antenatally. A dramatic reduction in hospitalizations for infections was noted in the treated group as compared with controls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A strategy for studying social differentiation in ethnically diverse situations is outlined and applied to Maoris and non-Maoris in New Zealand. Four propositions are formulated on the relations between religious and occupational status differentiation, between status differentiation and spatial, fertility, and mortality differentiation, and between status differentiation and biological amalgamation. The propositions are restated and tested in the form of nine hypotheses on intercensal changes in New Zealand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, four approaches to the explanation of church and non-church participation have been examined, only two of which have shown any ability to account for the denominational differences in the reported data. It was suggested that more attention be given to the sociology of knowledge perspective, despite the fact that a number of theoretical and methodological problems require attention. There is little doubt that religion is a significant factor in New Zealand society. Despite egalitarian ideals and the effects of the welfare state it makes a difference to many individuals' behavior and values which religious world they inhabit. The argument implicit in the article is that the explanation of these differences is to be found in religious rather than other social phenomena; within rather than outside religious groups. The development of a more adequate explanation in this area is dependent on the extent to which future research is focused on the meaning that church participation and non-church activity have for individuals.

The article focuses on issues related to democracy. The importance of trying to understand democracy at the present time is very apparent. In some sense or other, it is more and more coming to be recognised as the dominant tendency in all those countries that are commonly described as civilized. And, indeed, in nearly all parts of the world the various countries seem to be approximating to a common civilization, which is largely based on principles of a democratic type. It is perhaps in some of the smaller countries, such as Switzerland, and in some of the younger colonies, such as Australia and New Zealand, that these democratic tendencies can be studied in their least diluted form. In Great Britain, notwithstanding the strong tendency that it has to cling to the traditions of the past, it can hardly be questioned that the influence of democratic ideals is constantly increasing. This influence is not confined to the sphere of imperial or local politics, but permeates whole life of the British.
