In this study, Ca2+, calnexin (CNX) and calreticulin (CRT) within platelets from adult patients with chronic ITP were investigated.Methods: Platelets were isolated from blood specimen collected from 20 adult patients with chronic ITP and 20 healthy volunteers. Ca2+, CNX and CRT were determined by flow cytometry, and the results were analyzed with EXPO32 ADC software.Results: Flow cytometry showed the expressions of Ca2+ (74.19± 19.40% vs 22.79± 10.47%) was elevated (P< 0.05). However, CNX (15.10± 7.32% vs 41.79± 14.45%) and CRT (25.11± 12.66% vs 38.58± 12.02%) were decreased markedly in platelets from adult patients with chronic ITP (P< 0.05 compared with healthy volunteers).Conclusion: Based on enhanced expression of Ca2+ and attenuated expression of CNX and CRT in patients with chronic ITP, Ca2+ concentration and its associated down-regulated proteins may be important regulatory signals in the pathogenesis of chronic ITP.Keywords: platelets, chronic immune thrombocytopenia, Ca2+, calnexin, calreticulin

There was no significant difference in NK cell (285.58± 182.84 vs 528.92± 208.17) and B cell (186.66± 86.62 vs 334.17± 130.46). The proportion of naive CD4+ T cell (3.75± 0.50 vs 8.54± 1.61) in T lymphocyte subsets in patients with BPH was significantly reduced (P< 0.05). There was no significant difference in memory CD4+ T cell (87.9± 6.37 vs 92.63± 5.94), CD8+CD28+ T cell (60.52± 13.86 vs 64.32± 12.78), CD8+CDDR+ T cell (36.58± 12.87 vs 31.92± 8.54) and CD8+CD38+ T cell (2.1± 1.90 vs 2.55± 2.01).Conclusion: Immune dysfunction raised the risk of viral infection, inflammatory stimulation, and tumor induction in prostate cells, leading to hyperplasia, and immune non-response was potentially a key factor in the transformation of BPH into prostate cancer.Keywords: benign prostatic hyperplasia, lymphocyte subsets, pathogenesis, flow cytometry

The relationship between lymphocyte subsets and hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia was analyzed.Results: The absolute values of CD19+ B cell, CD3+ T cell, CD4+ Th cell, CD4+CD28+ cell, naive CD4+ T cell and memory CD4+ T cell in patients with dyslipidemia were markedly higher than those in healthy controls (P< 0.05). There was no significant difference between healthy controls and dyslipidemia patients in other lymphocyte subsets (P> 0.05). The absolute values of CD3+ T cell and naive CD4+ T cell were significantly positively correlated with hypercholesterolemia in peripheral blood (r=0.291 and 0.306, respectively, all P< 0.05). There was no significant correlation between hypertriglyceridemia and lymphocyte subsets (P> 0.05).Conclusion: Dyslipidemia has potential effects on immune profiles in lymphocytes subsets, and changes in lymphocyte subsets in dyslipidemia patients may lead to immune dysfunction.Keywords: dyslipidemia, lymphocyte subsets, flow cytometry

Purpose: To evaluate prospectively the value of size, shape, margin and density in discriminating between benign and malignant CT screen detected solid non-calcified pulmonary nodules. Material and Methods: This study was institutional review board approved. For this study 405 participants of the NELSON lung cancer screening trial with 469 indeterminate or potentially malignant solid pulmonary nodules (>50mm3) were selected. The nodules were classified based on size, shape (round, polygonal, irregular) and margin (smooth, lobulated, spiculated). Mean nodule density and nodule volume were automatically generated by software. Analyses were performed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results were presented as likelihood ratios (LR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed for mean density as predictor for lung cancer. Results: Of the 469 nodules, 387 (83%) were between 50 and 500mm3, 82 (17%) >500mm3, 59 (13%) malignant, 410 (87%) benign. The median size of the nodules was 103mm3 (range 50-5486mm3). In multivariate analysis lobulated nodules had LR of 11 compared to smooth; spiculated nodules a LR of 7 compared to smooth; irregular nodules a LR of 6 compared to round and polygonal; volume a LR of 3. The mean nodule CT density did not predict the presence of lung cancer (AUC 0.37, 95% CI 0.32-0.43). Conclusion: In solid non-calcified nodules larger than 50mm3, size and to a lesser extent a lobulated or spiculated margin and irregular shape increased the likelihood that a nodule was malignant. Most Pb/Zn smelter contaminated sites in China are often encountered natural phenomenon known as freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles and acid rain. However, the coupled effects of F-T cycles and acidification on the release behavior of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from soils remains unclear. A mechanistic study on PTEs release from soils was conducted by revealing the physicochemical weathering characteristics of minerals under F-T cycles combined with acidification. The results from F-T test indicated that among F-T parameters, F-T frequency were the more important factors influencing PTEs release, with the corresponding contribution ranges of 21.20-94.40 %. As pH decreased, the leaching concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn did not increase under the same F-T frequency. As F-T frequency increased, the leaching concentrations of these studied PTEs also did not increase under the same pH condition. Microstructure characteristics revealed that the soils were a complex system with multi-mineral aggregates, which had experienced complex physicochemical weathering after F-T combined with acidification treatment. Combined with geochemical modeling results, PTEs release was found to be mainly influenced by the microstructure damage and proton corrosion of minerals, while little affected by their precipitation and dissolution. The mutual coupling relationships of mineral weathering and PTEs release were conducive to the better understanding of the migration behavior of PTEs in contaminated sites under complex environment scenarios. Penile cancer is a rare malignant tumor of the male urinary system. The treatment benefit of standard first-line chemotherapy is not ideal for patients with locally advanced or metastatic lymph nodes. Immunotherapy has brought new treatment strategies and opportunities for patients with penile cancer. At present, clinical studies on immunotherapy for penile cancer have been reported, and the results show that it is effective but not conclusive. Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic respiratory infectious disease that considerably jeopardizes human health, and there is no effective vaccine suitable for its prevention in the entire population., Aim: To investigate the promotion of medication adherence and disease cognition in patients with drug-resistant (DR-)TB using detailed nursing management., Methods: In total, 114 patients with DR-TB who were diagnosed and treated at our hospital between January 2019 and January 2023 were included in this study. Patients in the control group ( n = 57) were managed with conventional nursing care, while those in the observation group ( n = 57) were managed with detailed nursing care. Medication adherence, disease awareness scores, medication safety, and nursing satisfaction were compared between the two groups after the intervention., Results: The post-intervention medication compliance rate was 91.23% in the observation group and 75.44% in the control group, with the former being 15.79% higher than the latter ( P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the disease awareness scores between the two groups before the intervention; the disease awareness scores of the observation group were significantly higher than those of the control group after the intervention ( P < 0.05). The incidence of gastrointestinal reactions, joint swelling and pain, hearing loss, electrolyte disorders, and liver and kidney function abnormalities were lower in the observation group than those in the control group. Background: Lymphatic metastasis is the major challenge in the treatment of penile cancer. The prognosis of individuals with lymphatic metastasis is extremely poor. Therefore, early identification of disease progression and lymphatic metastasis is an urgent task for researchers in penile cancer worldwide., Methods: In this study, using single-cell RNA sequencing, an immune landscape was established for the cancer ecosystem based on 46,861 cells from six patients with penile cancer (four with lymphatic metastasis [stage IV] and two without lymphatic metastasis [stage I]). Using bulk RNA sequencing, the discrepancy between the cancers and their respective metastatic lymph nodes was depicted based on seven patients with penile cancer., Results: The interaction between epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells, and the functional cooperation among invasion, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and angiogenesis were found to be important landscapes in the penile cancer ecosystem, playing important roles in progression of cancer and lymph node metastasis., Conclusions: This study is the first to investigate the altered tumor microenvironment heterogeneity of penile cancer as it evolves from non-lymphatic to lymphatic metastasis and provides insights into the mechanisms underlying malignant progression, the premetastatic niche, and lymphatic metastasis in penile cancer., (© 2024 The Author(s). The transformation of solid wastes from industrial production into effective adsorbents could significantly contribute to wastewater treatment. In this study, after acidizing and burning soft scale (SS) from coal gasification system, two magnetic adsorbents (mag-ASS and mag-BASS) were prepared via the combination of magnetite with ultrasonic, respectively. The treatment effects of mag-ASS and mag-BASS were then investigated for simulated wastewater containing macromolecular organic matter [i.e., methylene blue (MB)] and Ca 2+ . The results indicated that the pseudo second order kinetic, Elovich, Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin model could well describe the adsorption behavior of MB and Ca 2+ onto mag-ASS and mag-BASS. The maximum adsorption capacities of mag-ASS for MB and mag-BASS for Ca 2+ were 600.53 mg/g and 102.54 mg/g, respectively. Surprisingly, the adsorption abilities of mag-ASS for MB and mag-BASS for Ca 2+ show significantly higher than the others. The adsorption mechanisms of MB mainly included electrostatic interaction, π-π conjugate interaction and cation exchange, while those of Ca 2+ were mainly electrostatic interaction and cation exchange. The diffusion of MB and Ca 2+ onto the magnetic adsorbents might be controlled by the combined effects of intraparticle and liquid film diffusion. There was no significant reduction in adsorption capacity after 8 cycles of adsorption and desorption, indicating that SS-based magnetic adsorbents had good recyclability and stability. Moreover, the removal efficiency of mag-BASS for total hardness and total organic carbon in real coal gasification gray water (CGGW) was 82.60 and 64.10%, respectively. Background: To uncover the potential significance of JAK-STAT-SOCS1 axis in penile cancer, our study was the pioneer in exploring the altered expression processes of JAK-STAT-SOCS1 axis in tumorigenesis, malignant progression and lymphatic metastasis of penile cancer. Methods: In current study, the comprehensive analysis of JAK-STAT-SOCS1 axis in penile cancer was analyzed via multiple analysis approaches based on GSE196978 data, single-cell data (6 cancer samples) and bulk RNA data (7 cancer samples and 7 metastasis lymph nodes). Results: Our study observed an altered molecular expression of JAK-STAT-SOCS1 axis during three different stages of penile cancer, from tumorigenesis to malignant progression to lymphatic metastasis. STAT4 was an important dominant molecule in penile cancer, which mediated the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment by driving the apoptosis of cytotoxic T cell and was also a valuable biomarker of immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment response. Conclusions: Our findings revealed that the complexity of JAK-STAT-SOCS1 axis and the predominant role of STAT4 in penile cancer, which can mediate tumorigenesis, malignant progression, and lymphatic metastasis. The re-mobilization risks of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) during stabilization deserve to be considered. In this study, artificial simulation evaluation methods based on the environmental stress of freeze-thaw (F-T), acidification and variable pH were conducted to assess the long-term effectiveness of PTEs stabilized by MgO in Pb/Zn smelter contaminated soils. Among common stabilizing materials, MgO was considered as the best remediation material, since PTEs bioavailability reduced by 55.48% for As, 19.58% for Cd, 10.57% for Cu, and 26.33% for Mn, respectively. The stabilization effects of PTEs by MgO were best at the dosage of 5 wt%, but these studied PTEs would re-mobilize after 30 times F-T cycles. Acid and base buffering capacity results indicated that the basicity of contaminated soils with MgO treatment reduced under F-T action, and the leached PTEs concentrations would exceed the safety limits of surface water quality standard in China (GB3838-2002) after acidification of 2325 years. No significant changes were found in the pH-dependent patterns of PTEs before and after F-T cycles. However, after F-T cycles, the leaching concentrations of PTEs increased due to the destruction of soil microstructure and the functionality of hydration products formed by MgO, as indicated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energydispersive Xray spectroscopy (EDS) results. Long-wave sensitive (LWS) is a G protein-coupled receptor expressed in the retina, and zebrafish is a better model organism for studying vision, but the role of LWS1 in vision-guided behavior of larvae fish has rarely been reported. In this study, we found that zebrafish lws1 and lws2 are tandemly replicated genes, both with six exons, with lws1 being more evolutionarily conserved. The presence of Y277F in the amino acid sequence of lws2 may have contributed to the shift of λ max to green light. We established a lws1 knockout zebrafish model using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Lws1 -/- larvae showed significantly higher levels of feeding and appetite gene (agrp) expression than WT, and significantly lower levels of anorexia gene (pomc, cart) expression. In addition, green light gene compensation was observed in lws1 -/- larvae with significantly increased expression levels of rh2-1. The light-dark movement test showed that lws1 -/- larvae were more active under light-dark transitions or vibrational stimuli, and the expression of phototransduction-related genes was significantly up-regulated. Background: The effect of pain genes (NAV1, EHMT2, SP1, SLC6A4, COMT, OPRM1, OPRD1, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4) have not been reported previously in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) patients and thus we made a comprehensive analysis of pain genes in the prognosis of KIRC and tumor immunotherapy., Methods: In this study, TCGA, Kaplan-Meier plotter, Metascape, STRING, Human Protein Atlas, Single Cell Expression Atlas database, LinkedOmics, cBioPortal, MethSurv, CancerSEA, COSMIC database and R package (ggplot2, version 3.3.3) were used for comprehensive analysis of pain genes in KIRC. Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients were for co-expression analysis. Immunotherapy and TISIDB database were used for tumor Immunotherapy., Results: Representative pain genes (SP1, SLC6A4, COMT, OPRD1, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4) were statistically significant ( p  < 0.0001) in the prognosis of KIRC. Immunotherapy (anti-PD-1 therapy, anti-PD-L1 therapy, and anti-CTLA4 therapy) and immunomodulator (immunoinhibitor, immunostimulator, and MHC molecule) in KIRC were significant associated with pain genes (SP1, SLC6A4, COMT, OPRD1, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4), which were the important addition to clinical decision making for patients., Conclusions: Our study uncovered a mechanism for the effect of pain genes on KIRC outcome via the modulation of associated co-expression gene networks, gene variation, and tumor Immunotherapy., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2024 The Authors. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play multiple roles in synaptic transmission, and estrogen-related receptor α (ERRα) is involved in regulating ROS production. The purpose of our study was to explore the underlying effect of ERRα on ROS production, neurite formation and synaptic transmission. Our results revealed that knocking down ERRα expression affected the formation of neuronal neurites and dendritic spines, which are the basic structures of synaptic transmission and play important roles in learning, memory and neuronal plasticity; moreover, the amplitude and frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) and miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs) were decreased. These abnormalities were reversed by overexpression of human ERRα. Additionally, we also found that knocking down ERRα expression increased intracellular ROS levels in neurons. ROS inhibitor PBN rescued the changes in neurite formation and synaptic transmission induced by ERRα knockdown. The melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) is a G protein-coupled transporter that mediates the regulation of thyroid hormones and leptin on energy balance and food intake. However, the mechanisms of transcriptional regulation of Mc4r by thyroid hormone and leptin in fish have been rarely reported. The messenger RNA expression of Mc4r gene was significantly higher in brain than those in other tissues of mandarin fish. We analyzed the structure and function of a 2029 bp sequence of Mc4r promoter. Meanwhile, overexpression of NKX2.1 and incubation with leptin significantly increased Mc4r promoter activity, but triiodothyronine showed the opposite effect. Chromium (Cr) is a highly toxic element, which is widely present in environment due to industrial activities. One of most applicable technique to clean up Cr pollution is chemical reduction. However, the Cr(VI) concentration in soil increases again after remediation, and meanwhile the yellow soil would appear, which is commonly called as "yellowing" phenomenon. To date, the reason behind the phenomenon has been disputed for decades. This study aimed to introduce the possible "yellowing" mechanism and the influencing factors based on the extensive literature review. In this work, the concept of "yellowing" phenomenon was explained, and the most potential reasons include the reoxidation of manganese (Mn) oxides and mass transfer were summarized. Based on the reported finding and results, the large area of "yellowing" is likely to be caused by the re-migration of Cr(VI), since it could not sufficiently contact with the reductant under the effects of the mass transfer. In addition, other driving factors also control the occurrence of "yellowing" phenomenon. Telomeres are nucleoprotein structures located at the end of each chromosome, which function in terminal protection and genomic stability. Telomeric damage is closely related to replicative senescence in vitro and physical aging in vivo . As relatively long-lived mammals based on body size, bats display unique telomeric patterns, including the up-regulation of genes involved in alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT), DNA repair, and DNA replication. At present, however, the relevant molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we performed cross-species comparison and identified EPAS1 , a well-defined oxygen response gene, as a key telomeric protector in bat fibroblasts. Bat fibroblasts showed high expression of EPAS1, which enhanced the transcription of shelterin components TRF1 and TRF2, as well as DNA repair factor RAD50, conferring bat fibroblasts with resistance to senescence during long-term consecutive expansion. Based on a human single-cell transcriptome atlas, we found that EPAS1 was predominantly expressed in the human pulmonary endothelial cell subpopulation. Using in vitro -cultured human pulmonary endothelial cells, we confirmed the functional and mechanistic conservation of EPAS1 in telomeric protection between bats and humans. In addition, the EPAS1 agonist M1001 was shown to be a protective compound against bleomycin-induced pulmonary telomeric damage and senescence. In conclusion, we identified a potential mechanism for regulating telomere stability in human pulmonary diseases associated with aging, drawing insights from the longevity of bats.

A method was established for the separation and determination of triadimefon and its metabolite triadimenol enantiomer residues in major complementary fruit puree for infants and young children (banana puree, pineapple puree, and grape puree) by supercritical fluid chromatography. After the samples were extracted with acetonitrile and purified with a solid phase extraction cartridge, Acquity Trefoil CEL2 chiral chromatographic column was adopted for separation, and gradient elution was conducted at the flow rate of 1.0 ml/min under the mobile phase of supercritical carbon dioxide - 0.5% ammonia methanol, the detection wavelength was 220 nm and quantification was conducted with the external standard method. The limits of quantitation of triadimefon and triadimenol enantiomers were both 0.05 mg/kg, the linear ranges were 0.5-50 mg/L, and the linear correlation coefficients were greater than 0.9993. The recoveries in the spiked samples at 0.05, 0.2, and 3.0 mg/kg were from 80.1 to 106%, and the relative standard deviation reached 3.3-7.6%. The method is efficient, rapid, reproducible, and environmentally friendly, enabling accurate analysis of pesticide enantiomers, which can detect the enantiomer residues of triadimefon and its metabolite triadimenol in major complementary fruit puree for infants and young children., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Microwave dielectric ceramics with permittivity (ε r ) ∼ 20 play an important role in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology in 5G. Although fergusonite-structured materials with low dielectric loss are good candidates for 5G application, tuning the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (TCF) remains a problem. In the present work, smaller V 5+ ions ( r V = 0.355 Å, with coordination number (CN) = 4) were substituted for Nb 5+ ( r Nb = 0.48 Å with CN = 4) in the Nd(Nb 1- x V x )O 4 ceramics, which, according to in situ X-ray diffraction data, lowered the fergusonite-to-scheelite phase transition ( T F-S ) to 400 °C for x = 0.2. The thermal expansion coefficient (α L ) of the high-temperature scheelite phase was +11 ppm/°C, whereas for the low-temperature fergusonite phase, it was + 14 < α L < + 15 ppm/°C. The abrupt change in α L , the associated negative temperature coefficient of permittivity (τ ε ), and the minimum value of ε r at T F-S resulted in a near-zero TCF ∼ (+7.8 ppm/°C) for Nd(Nb 0.8 V 0.2 )O 4 (ε r ∼ 18.6 and Qf ∼ 70,100 GHz). A method to design near-zero TCF compositions based on modulation of τ ε and α L at T F-S is thus demonstrated that may also be extended to other fergusonite systems.

Objective: To explore the key sites in which L-arginine affects the expression of human coagulation factor VIII gene, and to create new drug targets for the treatment of hemophilia., Methods: A total of 5 human FVIII genes (A1, A2, A3, C1 and C2) with B domain deletion were transfected into human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) as promoters. Run-on assay and ELISA analysis were performed to observe the driving effect of each domain gene on chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) gene transcription and expression, and the effect of L-arginine on each promoter., Results: In co-culture with L-arginine, transcriptional expression of the CAT gene was not detected in the PCAT3-Basic group (negative control without promoters), PA3-CAT3-Enhancer group or PC1-CAT3-Enhancer group. The transcriptional expression of CAT gene in the PCAT3-Control group (positive control with promoters) and PA1-CAT3-Enhancer group was unchanged compared with the non-L-arginine intervention, while the transcriptional expression of CAT gene in the PA2-CAT3-Enhancer group was significantly enhanced., Conclusions: A1 and A2 domain genes had promoter function and could initiate the transcription and expression of CAT gene, but A3, C1 and C2 domain genes could not. Moreover, L-arginine can significantly enhance transcription and expression of human coagulation factor VIII via A2 domain.

To prevent the scale formation in the equipments and pipelines after pre-treated coal gasification gray water (CGGW) entering the reuse system and reduce the influence of various pollutants in the effluent on subsequent biochemical treatment, this study presented a coupled use of pulse electrocoagulation (PEC) and chemical precipitation (CP) coupling method for the pretreatment of coal gasification gray water (CGGW). In addition, the operation parameters of PEC and the reaction conditions of PEC-CP were optimized based on iron plate as electrode and total hardness, turbidity and sludge yield as assessment indicators. Due to the formation of multi-hydroxyl iron by several minutes of pulse current, and the addition of pH regulator and coagulant aid, the efficient removal of various ions, hardness and turbidity was significantly reduced via various mechanism such as redox, precipitation, adsorption and coagulation reaction. The result indicated that under the optimal operation conditions, the total hardness, turbidity, and Fe n+ of PEC-CP effluents were 275.0 mg/L, 3.0 NTU and 5.6 mg/L, respectively and sludge amount was 0.88 kg/m 3 . The removal rates of Si, B, Mn, Ba, COD, NPOC and NH 4 + -N by PEC-CP reached 80.0%, 75.4%, 97.0%, 99.8%, 35.0%, 33.6% and 23.8%, respectively. Objective: To establish better diagnosis thinking and provide advanced understanding of MSK, the CT imaging features, clinical characteristics, and the expression of suspected genes in the kidney spatiotemporal immune zonation and fetal renal development were investigated., Methods: 17 patients with MSK hospitalized in our hospital were selected as our research subjects. Human Phenotype Ontology, MalaCards: The Human Disease Database, GeneCards: The Human Gene Database, Human Protein Atlas, and Single Cell Expression Atlas were used to analyze this disease., Results: In our 17 patients, the incidence of MSK tended to be the same in male and female, and the onset age of MSK was probably 31-50 years old. The top one related disease of MSK was nephrocalcinosis and the most frequent phenotype related to MSK was nephrolithiasis. Objective: To observe the effects of thunder-fire moxibustion on the visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Young's modulus of multifidus and 6 m walking speed in the patients of osteoporosis with low skeletal muscle mass., Methods: Sixty patients of osteoporosis with low skeletal muscle mass were randomly divided into a medication group (30 cases) and a medication+thunder-fire moxibustion group (30 cases). In the medication group, caltrate was prescribed for oral administration, 2 tablets/day （600 mg/tablet）, for 4 weeks. In the medication+thunder-fire moxibustion group, on the base of oral administration with caltrate, thunder-fire moxibustion was exerted at Mingmen (GV4), Yaoyangguan(GV3), and bilateral Shenshu (BL23), Ganshu (BL18) and Dachangshu (BL25), 30 minutes at GV4, GV3 and BL18, and another 30 minutes at BL23 and BL25, once every other day, 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Before and after the treatment, VAS score, Young's modulus of the 4th lumbar multifidus and the average speed of 6 m walking were assessed., Results: After the treatment, the VAS score was decreased ( P <0.05, P <0.01) and the speed of 6 m walking was increased ( P <0.05, P <0.01) in both groups in comparison with their own pre-treatment. Compared with the medication group, VAS score was decreased remarkably ( P <0.05) and the speed of 6 m walking remarkably increased ( P <0.01) in the medication+thunder-fire moxibustion group after the treatment. Self-comparison showed that, compared with the same side before the treatment, the value of Young's modulus after the treatment was decreased on both sides in the medication+thunder-fire moxibustion group ( P <0.01). After the treatment, compared with the medication group on the same side, the value of Young's modulus was decreased on both sides ( P <0.01) in the medication+thunder-fire moxibustion group., Conclusion: Thunder-fire moxibustion can relieve pain intensity, decrease the tension of the multifidus, and increase the walking speed.

Since lager quantities of the zinc (Zn) smelting slags were traditionally dumped at the indigenous Zn smelting sites, the release characterization of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from the Zn smelting slags under various environmental conditions were of great significance for an environmental risk analysis. The acidification of the Zn smelting slags to pH= 4 and 6 would result in the leaching concentrations of Cd and Mn exceeding the fourth-class standard of surface water quality standard in China (GB3838-2002). Notably, most metals exhibited an amphoteric leaching pattern, where the highest leached concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn were 4.15, 4.21, 140.0, 78.1, 156.9 and 477.0 mg/L, respectively. In addition, the highest release of toxic metals within 96 h reached 0.17 % of As, 3.50 % of Cd, 2.77 % of Cu, 6.92 % of Mn, 0.13 % of Pb, and 2.57 % of Zn, respectively. The combined results of various characterization techniques suggested that the PTEs remobilization effected by rhizosphere-like organic acids were mainly controlled by the precipitation of newly formed Fe, Mn and Al (hydr) oxides and the complexation of organic ligands. Background: To uncover advanced prognosis biomarkers in patient with kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), our study was the first to make a comprehensive analysis of hsa-mir-21 predicted target genes and explore the immune characteristics in KIRC. Methods: In this study, the comprehensive analysis of hsa-mir-21 predicted target genes and immune characteristics in KIRC were analyzed via TIMER2.0, UALCAN, Metascape, Kaplan-Meier plotter, Human Protein Atlas, CancerSEA, JASPAR, GEPIA, R package: GSVA package (version 1.34.0) & immune infiltration algorithm (ssGSEA) and R package: RMS package (version 6.2-0) & SURVIVAL package (version 3.2-10). Results: Up-transcriptional expressions of RP2, NFIA, SPRY1 were significantly associated with favorable prognosis in KIRC, whereas that of TGFBI was markedly significantly to unfavorable prognosis. Additionally, RP2, NFIA, SPRY1 and TGFBI were significantly relevant to the immune infiltration in KIRC. Finally, ZNF263 was a common predicted transcription factor of RP2, NFIA, SPRY1 and TGFBI, which can as an independent indicator for prognosis in KIRC patients. Mineralogy was an important driver for the environmental release of heavy metals. Therefore, the present work was conducted by coupling mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) with complementary geochemical tests to evaluate the geochemical behaviors and their potential environmental risks of heavy metals in the smelter contaminated soil. MLA analysis showed that the soil contained 34.0% of quartz, 17.15% of biotite, 1.36% of metal sulfides, 19.48% of metal oxides, and 0.04% of gypsum. Moreover, As, Pb, and Zn were primarily hosted by arsenopyrite (29.29%), galena (88.41%), and limonite (24.15%), respectively. The integrated geochemical results indicated that among the studied metals, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn were found to be more bioavailable, bioaccessible, and mobile. Based on the combined mineralogical and geochemical results, the environmental release of smelter-driven elements such as Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn were mainly controlled by the acidic dissolution of minerals with neutralizing potential, the reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn oxides, and the partial oxidation of metal sulfide minerals. Objective: To observe the effect of moxibustion of "Ganshu" (BL18)and "Shenshu" (BL23) on bone mineral density (BMD), biomechanics, bone metabolism and musculoskeletal morphology of osteoporosis (OP) rats, so as to explore its mechanism underlying treatment of OP via bone-muscle interaction., Methods: Thirty-two female SD rats were randomly divided into sham operation, OP model, moxibustion and medication (nilestriol) groups, with 8 rats in each group. For rats of the sham operation group, a small amount of fat around the ovaries was removed, and those of the other 3 groups received removal of bila-teral ovaries for establishing OP model. Moxibustion was applied to bilateral BL18 and BL23 for 30 min, once every other day, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. Rats of the medication group received gavage of nilestriol (1 mg/kg) once a week for 12 weeks.After the interventions, a dual-energy absorptiometry was used to determine the BMD and bone mineral content of the rats' right femur and the fourth lumbar vertebrae under anesthesia, and three-point bending test used to detect the biomechanical properties (including load, displacement, stiffness) of the right femur. The levels of serum type I collagen C-terminal peptide (CTX-I), acid-resis-tant tartrate phosphatase (TRACP) and estradiol (E 2 ) were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and histopathological changes of the left femur and the quadriceps observed after hematoxylin-eosin (H.E.) staining., Results: Compared with the sham operation group, the BMD and bone mineral contents of the right femur and the fourth lumbar vertebra, the load and stiffness of the right femur, and concentration of serum E 2 were significantly decreased ( P <0.01, P <0.05), and the displacement of the right femur, and concentrations of serum CTX-Ⅰ and TRACP notably increased in the model group ( P <0.01). After the interventions, the decreased levels of BMD and bone mineral contents, the load and stiffness and concentration of serum E 2 , and the increased levels of the displacement, and concentrations of serum CTX-Ⅰ and TRACP were all reversed by both moxibustion (except the bone mineral content of the fourth lumbar vertebra) and medication ( P <0.01, P <0.05). No signi-ficant differences were found between moxibustion and medication in up-regulating the levels of BMD and bone mineral contents, the load and stiffness (except serum E2) and down-regulating the levels of the displacement, and concentrations of serum CTX-Ⅰ and TRACP ( P >0.05). H.E. staining revealed that rats in the sham operation group showed mild thinness of the bone cortex, uneven thickness of trabecular bone, with distortion, fracture and osteoporosis of the left femur, and different size of rhabdomyocytes in the right quadriceps femoris muscle, with obvious proliferation of interstitial fibrous tissue and inflammatory cell infiltration, which were relatively and clearly milder in both moxibustion and medication groups., Conclusion: Moxibustion of BL18 and BL23 can increase the BMD and bone mineral content, improve biomechanical performance, adjust bone metabolism, and mitigate bone and the attached muscle histopathological changes in OP rats, suggesting that modulating interaction between bones and muscles is probably one of the ideas in the treatment of OP.

A method is first established for the separation and determination of fenpropathrin enantiomer residues in apple puree, strawberry puree, and tomato puree considered a supplementary food for infants by supercritical fluid chromatography. After the sample was extracted with acetonitrile and cleaned up by a solid-phase extraction column, then it was separated by a CHIRALPAK AD-3 chiral column with gradient elution at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min using methanol and supercritical carbon dioxide as the mobile phase, detected by ultraviolet detector at 230 nm wavelength and quantified with the external standard method. The limits of quantification of the two fenpropathrin enantiomers were both 0.2 mg/kg, the linear ranges were 1.0-20.0 mg/L with linear correlation coefficients greater than 0.9992, the recoveries in the spiked samples at 0.2, 0.4 and 2.0 mg/kg were from 80.6 to 105%, and the relative standard deviation reached 2.6-7.7%. Objective: In order to clarify the interaction mechanism, the phenotype and abnormal gene loci of FXI, FXII, and PS were investigated in this study., Methods: Chinese pedigree with hereditary combined deficiency of coagulation factor (F) XI, FXII, and PS was enrolled in our study. Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), partial thromboplastin time (PT), FXI:C, FXII:C, and protein S (PS):C were determined using the one-stage coagulation method. FXI:antigen (Ag), FXII:Ag, and PS:Ag were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Exons and introns of the FXI, FXII, and PS genes were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and gene sequencing results were analyzed using Chromas software., Results: A deletion of two bases located in introns A-149 and-150 within the FXI gene of the proband, his father, wife, and both sons. A missense variant in exon 14 (GGT → AGT, Gly542Ser) within FXII of the proband, his parents, and both sons. Four variants in exon 4 within the PS gene of all members of the pedigree: GTT → GTG (Val46Val), CGC → CTC (Arg49Leu), CGT → CAT (Arg60His), and CAG → TAG (Gln61stop)., Conclusions: None of the pedigree members showed a tendency for bleeding or thrombosis. Therefore, we speculated that the lack of coagulation factors counteracted the lack of PS, restoring the balance between the coagulation and anticoagulation systems. Objective: To uncover novel prognostic and therapeutic targets for BLCA, our study is the first to investigate the role of hsa-mir-183 and its up-regulated predicted target genes in bladder urothelial carcinoma., Methods: To address this issue, our study explored the roles of hsa-mir-183 predicted target genes in the prognosis of BLCA via UALCAN, Metascape, Kaplan-Meier plotter, Human Protein Atlas, TIMER2.0, cBioPortal and Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer databases., Results: High transcriptional expressions of PDCD6, GNG5, PHF6 and MAL2 were markedly relevant to favorable OS in BLCA patients, whereas SLC25A15 and PTDSS1 had opposite expression significance. Additionally, high transcriptional expression of PDCD6, GNG5, PHF6, MAL2, SLC25A15 and PTDSS1 were significantly correlated with BLCA individual cancer stages and molecular subtypes. Furthermore, high mutation rate of PDCD6, MAL2, SLC25A15 and PTDSS1 were observed. Finally, TP53 mutation of PDCD6, GNG5, PHF6, MAL2, SLC25A15 and PTDSS1 has guiding significance for drug selection in BLCA., Conclusions: PDCD6, GNG5, PHF6, MAL2, SLC25A15 and PTDSS1 could be the advanced independent indicators for prognosis of BLCA patients, and TP53-mutation might be a biomarker for drug option in BLCA patients.

Antimony (Sb) pollution in soils is an important environmental problem, and it is imperative to investigate the migration and transformation behavior of Sb in soils. The adsorption behaviors and interaction mechanisms of Sb in soils were studied using integrated characterization techniques and the batch equilibrium method. The results indicated that the adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Sb onto soils were well fitted by the first-order kinetic, Langmuir, and Freundlich models, respectively, while the maximum adsorbed amounts of Sb (III) in soil 1 and soil 2 were 1314.46 mg/kg and 1359.25 mg/kg, respectively, and those of Sb (V) in soil 1 and soil 2 were 415.65 mg/kg and 535.97 mg/kg, respectively. In addition, pH ranging from 4 to 10 had little effect on the adsorption behavior of Sb. Moreover, it was found that Sb was mainly present in the residue fractions, indicating that Sb had high geochemical stability in soils. SEM analysis indicated that the distribution positions of Sb were highly coincident with Ca, which was mainly due to the existence of calcium oxides, such as calcium carbonate and calcium hydroxide, that affected Sb adsorption, and further resulted in Sb and Ca bearing co-precipitation. XPS analysis revealed the valence state transformation of Sb (III) and Sb (V), suggesting that Fe/Mn oxides and reactive oxygen species (ROS) served as oxidant or reductant to promote the occurrence of the Sb redox reaction. Sb was mobile and leachable in soils and posed a significant threat to surface soils, organisms, and groundwater. This work provides a fundamental understanding of Sb adsorption onto soils, as well as a theoretical guide for studies on the adsorption and migration behavior of Sb in soils.

The laryngeal echolocation is regarded as one of the conspicuous traits that play major roles in flourishing bats. Whether the laryngeal echolocation in bats originated once, however, is still controversial. We here address this question by performing molecular convergence analyses between ancestral branches of bats and toothed whales. Compared with controls, the molecular convergences were enriched in hearing-related genes for the last common ancestor of bats (LCAB) and extant echolocating bats, but not for the LCA of Old World fruit bats (LCAP). And the convergent hearing gene prestin of the LCAB and the extant echolocating bats functionally converged. More importantly, the high-frequency hearing of the LCAP-prestin knock-in mice decreased with lower cochlear outer hair cell function compared with the LCAB-prestin knock-in mice. Smelting slags is a well-known industrial solid waste, while there were limited studies on the key factors controlling the potential health risks caused by these smelting slags. The results indicated that the bioaccessible fractions of heavy metals showed a significant difference, but no statistical difference among different particle sizes of the zinc smelting slags. The bioaccessible metal fractions in the gastric (GP) and gastrointestinal (GIP) phases were 0 (Cr) - 91.39% (Cd)) and 0 (Cr) - 47.80% (Ni). Among the studied metals, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn were the most bioaccessible to human. The Pearson correlation analysis showed that the carbonate bound phases of heavy metals were responsible for their bioaccessibility in GP and GIP. Moreover, the combined results of multidisciplinary characterization also further implied that the solubility behaviors of toxic elements in the smelting slags were dominated by soluble metal bearing- mineral phases and absorbable Fe, Mn and Al-rich minerals and metal bearing-precipitates during SBRC extractions. Therefore, these study results provide a insight into the potential controls of metal bioaccessibility in the zinc smelting slags, which was of great significance from the aspects of their resource recycling and risk management., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Background: Adult chronic immune thrombocytopenia (chronic ITP) is a common autoimmune hemorrhagic disease characterized by decreased platelet production and increased platelet destruction, leading to thrombocytopenia. In this study, Ca 2+ , calnexin (CNX) and calreticulin (CRT) within platelets from adult patients with chronic ITP were investigated., Methods: Platelets were isolated from blood specimen collected from 20 adult patients with chronic ITP and 20 healthy volunteers. Ca 2+ , CNX and CRT were determined by flow cytometry, and the results were analyzed with EXPO32 ADC software., Results: Flow cytometry showed the expressions of Ca 2+ (74.19±19.40% vs 22.79±10.47%) was elevated ( P <0.05). However, CNX (15.10±7.32% vs 41.79±14.45%) and CRT (25.11±12.66% vs 38.58±12.02%) were decreased markedly in platelets from adult patients with chronic ITP ( P <0.05 compared with healthy volunteers)., Conclusion: Based on enhanced expression of Ca 2+ and attenuated expression of CNX and CRT in patients with chronic ITP, Ca 2+ concentration and its associated down-regulated proteins may be important regulatory signals in the pathogenesis of chronic ITP., Competing Interests: Da-Ming Xu and Ze-Wen Zhang are co-first authors for this study. This study comprehensively investigated the potential roles of soil mineralogy identified by the automated mineral liberation analysers (MLA) in the prediction of geochemical behavior of toxic metals in the smelter polluted soils. The results from modal mineralogy revealed that the non-reactive silicate phases such as quartz (42.05%) and biotite (40.43%) were the major mineralogical phases. The element deportment showed that fayalite, lead oxide, apatite, galena and wollastonite were identified as the dominant As, Cd, Pb and Zn bearing minerals. Furthermore, MLA analysis also confirmed that Pb was most concentrated in the smaller particles of lead oxide, which significantly enhanced Pb release in reaction with the chemical extractant during chemical kinetic tests. The results from pH-dependent leaching tests indicated that the leaching concentrations of As, Pb and Zn increased at low and high pH values, but were lowest at the neutral pH range. In addition, the results from the kinetic study demonstrated that the second order model provided the best description for the release patterns of the main metal contaminants in the bioavailability and bioaccessibility tests. The integrated geochemical analysis demonstrated that among these studied elements, As showed a typical geochemical pattern, which was predominantly controlled by 90.09% of fayalite. Objective: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture on motor function and muscle state in patients with primary osteoporosis (POP)., Methods: A total of 60 female patients with POP were randomized into an observation group (30 cases, 1 case dropped off) and a control group (30 cases, 1 case dropped off). On the basis of adjusting lifestyle, caltrate was given orally in the control group, 2 pills a day for 4 weeks. On the basis of the treatment in the control group, electroacupuncture was applied at Zusanli (ST 36), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Ganshu (BL 18), Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23), etc. in the observation group, with disperse-dense wave of 2 Hz/10 Hz in frequency, once every other day, 3 times a week for 4 weeks. The time of timed up-and-go test (TUGT) and the value of 10 m maximal walking speed (10 m MWS) before and after treatment were compared in the two groups, and the Young's modulus values of bilateral multifidus muscles in prone position and sitting position before and after treatment were compared by real-time shear wave elastography (SWE) in the two groups., Results: After treatment, the TUGT time was decreased compared before treatment in the observation group ( P <0.01), and that in the observation group was shorter than the control group ( P <0.01). After treatment, the value of 10 m MWS test was increased compared before treatment in the observation group ( P <0.05). After treatment, the Young's modulus values of bilateral multifidus muscles in prone position and sitting position were increased compared before treatment in the observation group ( P <0.01); except for the left side in sitting position, the Young's modulus values of multifidus muscles in the observation group were higher than those in the control group ( P <0.01, P <0.05)., Conclusion: On the basis of oral caltrate, electroacupuncture can improve the motor function and muscle state in patients with POP.

Acute myelomagakaryocytic leukemia is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge owing to its heterogeneity and overlapping features with other types of acute leukemia. In order to build a diagnostic profile, we analyzed the biological, clinical and hematologic characteristics of acute myelomagakaryocytic leukemia. We found that, in three patients diagnosed with acute myelomagakaryocytic leukemia, there were two types of leukemia cells. One type was myeloblastic with positive peroxidase (POX) stainig and the expression of antigens CD13 and CD33. The other type was megakaryoblastic with negative POX staining and the expression of antigens CD36, CD41, CD42a and CD61. Three patients displayed the same cytogenetic abnormality, a (9: 22) translocation. Among the three patients with RT-PCR, two patients displayed BCR-ABL fusion gene amplification and one patient showed a previously undescribed OTT-MAL fusion gene amplification.

Exposure to intense noise can damage cochlear hair cells, leading to hearing loss in mammals. To avoid this constraint, most mammals have evolved in relatively quiet environments. Echolocating bats, however, are naturally exposed to continuous intense sounds from their own and neighboring sonar emissions for maintaining sonar directionality and range. Here, we propose the presence of intense noise resistance in cochlear hair cells of echolocating bats against noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). To test this hypothesis, we performed noise exposure experiments for laboratory mice, one nonecholocating bat species, and five echolocating bat species. Contrary to nonecholocating fruit bats and mice, the hearing and the cochlear hair cells of echolocating bats remained unimpaired after continuous intense noise exposure. The comparative analyses of cochleae transcriptomic data showed that several genes protecting cochlear hair cells from intense sounds were overexpressed in echolocating bats. Particularly, the experimental examinations revealed that ISL1 overexpression significantly improved the survival of cochlear hair cells. Our findings support the existence of protective effects in cochlear hair cells of echolocating bats against intense noises, which provides new insight into understanding the relationship between cochlear hair cells and intense noises, and preventing or ameliorating NIHL in mammals., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright © 2021. Introduction: Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is not only a biomarker of kidney injury but also a bone-derived factor involved in metabolism. We aimed to explore relationships between plasma NGAL and chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD) parameters in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients., Materials and Methods: First, a cross sectional observational study, including 105 MHD patients, was conducted to explore relationships between plasma NGAL levels and CKD-MBD parameters. Second, impact of parathyroidectomy and auto-transplantation (PTX + AT) on plasma NGAL was investigated in 12 MHD patients with severe secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT)., Results: According to Spearman correlation analysis, plasma NGAL levels were positively correlated with female (r = 0.243, P = 0.012), vintage (r = 0.290, P = 0.003), Klotho (r = 0.234, P = 0.016), calcium(Ca) (r = 0.332, P = 0.001), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (r = 0.401, P < 0.001) and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) (r = 0.256, P = 0.008); while inversely correlated with albumin(Alb) (r = - 0.201, P = 0.039). After adjusting for age, sex, vintage, Alb and all parameters of CKD-MBD(Ca, P, lg(ALP), lg(iPTH), Klotho and fibroblast growth factor 23(FGF23)), lg(NGAL) were positively correlated with Ca (r = 0.481, P < 0.001), P (r = 0.336, P = 0.037), lg(ALP) (r = 0.646, P < 0.001) in Partial correlation analysis; further multiple linear regression analysis showed same positive associations between lg(NGAL) and Ca (β = 0.330, P = 0.002), P (β = 0.218, P = 0.037), lg(ALP) (β = 0.671, P < 0.001). During the 4-7 days after PTX + AT, plasma NGAL decreased from 715.84 (578.73, 988.14) to 688.42 (660.00, 760.26) ng/mL (P = 0.071), Klotho increased from 496.45 (341.73, 848.30) to 1138.25 (593.87, 2009.27) pg/mL (P = 0.099)., Conclusion: Plasma NGAL levels were positively associated with ALP in MHD patients; and downtrends were shown after PTX + AT in patients with severe SHPT. Adult chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (cITP) is a chronic and usually life-long haemorrhagic disorder in which enhanced platelet destruction and weakened platelet production lead to thrombocytopenia. Platelets were isolated from blood samples collected from 40 adult patients with cITP and 40 healthy volunteers. Mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and plasma membrane phosphatidylserine externalization were determined by flow cytometry, and activation of caspase-3 and expressions of Bax, Bak and Bcl-xL were analysed by western blotting. Flow cytometry showed increased mitochondrial depolarization and lower ΔΨm in platelets from adult patients with cITP. In addition, plasma membrane phosphatidylserine externalization was observed on platelets from adult patients with cITP, but rarely from healthy volunteers. Western blot analysis of platelet proteins revealed that, in adult cITP patients, caspase-3 was activated, which cleaved gelsolin and to release a 47-kDa fragment. Moreover, the expressions of Bax and Bak were elevated, and Bcl-xL was decreased markedly in platelets from adult patients with cITP. Our findings reveal, based on loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), phosphatidylserine exposure, caspase-3 activation, enhanced expression of Bax and Bak, and attenuated expression of Bcl-xL, that platelet death in the pathogenesis of thrombocytopenia in chronic ITP in adults is apoptotic., (Copyright © 2021 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. In this paper, a method for the separation of triadimenol stereoisomers using ultra-performance convergence chromatography and an analytical method for the determination of triadimenol stereoisomer residues in pumpkin puree, apple puree, and tomato puree as a supplement for infants are established. Test samples were extracted with acetonitrile and successively purified with graphitized carbon black and Florisil column. Afterward, Acquity Trefoil AMY1 column was adopted for chiral separation of chromatographic column, and gradient elute was carried out with supercritical carbon dioxide-methanol as the mobile phase and with external standard method for quantitation. Results showed that the linearly dependent coefficient of the four kinds of triadimenol stereoisomers within 1.0 and 50 mg/L was greater than 0.9997, and the limit of quantitation of the four kinds of triadimenol stereoisomers was 0.05 mg/kg. Recovery experiment was carried out within 0.05 and 1.0 mg/kg scope, the recoveries were 81.0-107％, and the relative standard deviation was 2.3-7.6%. This method implemented the separation of triadimenol stereoisomers and its residue test in pumpkin puree, apple puree, and tomato puree as a supplement for infants, and it can provide reliable technical support for the analysis of pesticide residue and assessment of product quality., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Despite recent studies have investigated the strong influences of smelting activities on heavy metal contamination in the soil environment, little studies have been conducted on the current information about the potential environmental risks posed by toxic heavy metals in smelting contaminated sites. In the present study, a combination of the bioavailability, speciation, and release kinetics of toxic heavy metals in the indigenous zinc smelting contaminated soil were reliably used as an effective tool to support site risk assessment. The bioavailability results revealed that the bioavailable metal concentrations were intrinsically dependent on the types of chemical extractants. Interestingly, 0.02 mol/L EDTA + 0.5 mol/L CH 3 COONH 4 was found to be the best extractant, which extracted 30.21% of Cu, 31.54% of Mn, 2.39% of Ni and 28.89% of Zn, respectively. The sequential extraction results suggested that Cd, Pb, and Zn were the most mobile elements, which would pose the potential risks to the environment. The correlation of metal bioavailability with their fractionation implied that the exchangeable metal fractions were easily extracted by CaCl 2 and Mehlich 1, while the carbonate and organic bound metal fractions could be extracted by EDTA and DTPA with stronger chelating ability. Moreover, the kinetic modeling results suggested that the chemical desorption mechanism might be the major factor controlling heavy metal release. These results could provide some valuable references for the risk assessment and management of heavy metals in the smelting contaminated sites.
