This notebook provides vocational agricultural teachers with 10 detailed lesson plans on the major topic of energy management in agriculture. The lesson plans present information about energy and the need to manage it wisely, using a problem-solving approach. Each lesson plan follows this format: lesson topic, lesson performance objectives, materials needed, the situation, introduction to lesson, presentation of lesson (the problem and possible solutions to the problem), student application (suggested exercises), evaluation suggestions and instruments, and a listing of references. Appendixes provide handouts and transparency masters. This manual on air conditioning is one of a series of power mechanics texts and visual aids covering theory of operation, diagnosis, and repair. Addressed in the seven individual units of the course are the following topics: introduction to Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) 1345 (engineer equipment operator); power flow (engines and power trains); fundamentals of earthmoving; tractors and tractor-drawn equipment; materials handling and sectionalized equipment (operation of sectionalized equipment, rough-terrain forklifts, scoop loaders, and sectionalization); rollers, distributors, air compressors, and rock crushers; and associated subjects (following decontamination procedures, fording, and working with wire rope). This student guide, one of a series of correspondence training courses designed to improve the job performance of members of the Marine Corps, deals with the skills needed by engineer equipment chiefs. Addressed in the five individual units of the course are the following topics: construction management (planning, scheduling, and supervision); estimation of equipment efficiency (equipment utilization, efficiency factors, crawler-tractor applications, tractor/scraper applications, road graders, and crane-shovels); construction sites; maintenance systems (maintenance support, maintenance shops, shop layout); and support functions (engineer and supply support). This curriculum guide consists of materials for use in teaching an advanced course in agricultural mechanics designed for 11th and 12th grade students. This curriculum guide, the second part of a core curriculum for a rural agriculture program, consists of materials for use in presenting the final two units in a nine-unit course for high school vocational agriculture students living in rural areas. Addressed in the first unit are the following aspects of agricultural mechanics: selecting and using electric motors, adjusting and maintaining spraying equipment, and maintaining and servicing tractors. The second of the two units, a discussion of agricultural business management, deals with understanding and using basic economic principles of production, managing credit in agriculture, planning an insurance program, using the Illinois Farm Record Book, understanding agricultural taxes, using microcomputers in agricultural business management, understanding basic agricultural law, and planning an agricultural production business. This guide contains a course outline for a tractor mechanic course. The outline is organized by 15 duties: performing general skills and maintaining and servicing storage battery, ignition circuit, the cooling system, the charging circuit, the starting circuit, gasoline fuel system, diesel fuel system, basic engine, lubrication system, clutches, hydraulics, powertrain, differentials, and final drive. Each duty is further divided into job-relevant tasks. These components are provided for each task: standard of performance of task, source of standard, conditions for performance of task, enabling objectives, resources, teaching activities, a criterion-referenced measure (practical application and method of evaluating practical applications), and a performance checklist for evaluation. A miniature tractor pull was developed as a high school activity, enabling students to assess a tractor's pulling capabilities and determine subsequent horsepower. The activity takes the textbook concept of horsepower and makes it come alive. (JOW)

Developed to assist vocational agricultural mechanics students in learning to be tractor mechanics, this curriculum guide contains all the student competency sheets which comprise this competency-based curriculum. These competency sheets are categorized under sixteen instructional units. The first two units cover employment opportunities and general skills. This shop guide gives graphic illustration of twenty-eight learning stations in a tractor mechanics shop, at each of which a specific learning activity occurs. The authors suggest that each station (most of them constructed of plywood or sheet metal and angle iron) be self-contained, having its own appropriate tools, supplies, parts, and set of instructions so that students may proceed at their own pace with minimal supervision. Each learning station description covers use (e.g., to polarize the generator, replace the rear ark, or measure piston ring clearance), special instructions to the teacher, tools and supplies needed, and simulator materials. Subject areas covered include electrical (battery, alternator, generator, starter, spark plugs, and ignition), fuel system (carburetor, fuel pump, injectors, and filters), cooling system, bearings and mechanicals (seals, bearings, gaskets, and clutch), and main engine block parts (pistons, valves and assemblies, connecting rods, crankshaft, and timing gear). This curriculum guide contains materials necessary to implement the vocational English as a Second Language (ESL) program for Farm Equipment Operators developed by the Ceres Unified School District. The flrst two sections provide the plans and accompanying forms for needs assessment and recruitment/intake/enrollment. In the third section a curriculum development plan is described. It includes a course outline, time line, student progress chart and checklist, and lesson plan form. The next section contains thirty weekly lesson plans, indicating topics, behavioral objectives, outline, vocabulary, materials, student worksheets, evaluation instruments, and lesson evaluations. Vocational topics include identification of tools and farm equipment parts, safety, gasoline engines, and farm equipment operation and maintenance. This curriculum guide is intended to assist teachers, administrators, and supervisors in organizing and conducting vocational programs which meet the needs of high school students who desire vocational training in the off-farm agribusiness of agricultural machinery service. The three-year course for grades 10, 11, and 12 involves operation, maintenance, set-up, adjustement, repair, reconditioning, and overhaul of agricultural machinery and equipment. It includes dealership organization, management, sales, human relations, and leadership development topics. Study of career opportunities and development of job experience through supervised occupational experiences are also a part of the program. Designed for 1080 hours of in-school instruction (360 per year), the course needs two consecutive periods per day for class instruction. Each of the three years is divided into 8-10 major learning areas which are organized into this format: (1) unit concept, (2) suggested student performance objectives, (3) instructional areas, (4) examples of student learning activities, (5) competencies, (6) instructional materials, and (7) supporting references. A list of 100 references is provided. Other materials include a list of recommended equipment, recommended facility plans, and criteria for quality vocational programs in agricultural education. This curriculum package was developed to be used as a guide for high school vocational agriculture teachers in Oregon preparing a curriculum to meet local community/regional needs. A second goal of this curriculum is to eliminate sex-bias or sex-role stereotyping in vocational agriculture classes. The curriculum contains 20 units. Topics covered in the units include an introduction to the vocational agriculture curriculum, including the problem of sex bias, and a four-year unit outline; orientation; tractor operation and safety; Future Farmers of America; small gasoline engine maintenance; beef breeds, selection, and management; supervised occupational experience programs; records; parliamentary procedure; sheep breeds, selection, and management; dairy, poultry, rabbits, horses, and goats; swine breeds, selection, and management; agricultural mechanization; plant science; ornamental horticulture; alfalfa production and hay quality testing; and livestock showing and fitting. This document is a teacher's guide for a unit in tractor and machinery safety for college freshmen. It is intended to be used for 10 hours of instruction for freshmen who are intending to work on or around machinery. Safety hazards directly and indirectly related to many types of machinery are covered in addition to tractors. The objectives of the unit are to help students to develop an understanding of farm accident prevention and the ability to identify types of tractors and machinery and the use of each, to operate a tractor safely, and to perform basic tractor and truck maintenance. The unit is divided into material for four jobs, as follows: (1) identifying types of tractors and machinery; (2) understanding farm accident prevention; (3) operating a tractor safely; and (4) maintaining tractors and trucks. Each of the jobs includes objectives, guide questions, references, an approach to interest students, key facts about the content of the material, and transparency masters. This core curriculum contains five units of material for teaching energy to vocational agriculture students. Energy uses and the benefits of energy conservation are covered in a unit on the impact of energy on agriculture. Discussed next are tractor performance and Nebraska tractor test data for selecting and evaluating tractors for maximum fuel efficiency. Proper ballasting of a tractor as well as operational procedures such as proper matching of tillage equipment to the tractor, gearing up and throttling down, and minimized idling are covered in a unit dealing with tractor operation for maximum fuel efficiency. Addressed next are the following topics: terms related to petrochemical energy use in agriculture, recognizing the amounts of energy these represent, various practices in the use of petrochemicals, and alternatives to their use in farming. Grain production, harvesting, handling, and storage practices that save energy are examined. Included in each unit are a terminal objective; specific objectives; suggested activities; instructional materials (objectives, information sheets, and transparency masters); a unit test; and test answers.
