Raw clay has been used in housing construction from ancient times and is still used now. Traditional habitat, which consists of diverse buildings scattered around our earth, provides proof. Rain water wash, among any other pathologies impacting naked earthen walls, is a serious concern that requires careful consideration. This explains why this study on the protection mechanisms for these types of walls is so interesting. This article describes an experiment with low walls built of raw clay mixed with composite protective materials (both traditional and modern), which were subjected to intense flooding. The locust bean tree (local tree) fruit husk extract applied to raw clay mortar and correctly blended appears to provide superior ability to protect walls from water assault, according to the results of the tests examined through the efficiency of the protecting materials. In addition, consistency and plasticity tests showed improved performance in clay material qualities. Research carried out shows that the decoction of pods of Parkia biglobosa (nere) is rich in tannins compounds including gallic acid, epicatechin gallate and epigallocatechin.

Des mesures simultanées transitoires de la conductivité thermique et de l'effusivité thermique dans la direction perpendiculaire aux fibres des bois ptérocarpus erinaceus et afzélia ont été effectuées à la température ambiante (20$^{\circ}$C) avec la technique de caractérisation thermophysique des matériaux de construction appelée ruban chaud, sur des échantillons de bois à différents degrés de teneur en eau. L'avantage fondamental de cette technique réside dans la courte durée (0 à 180 s) des manipulations et la possibilité d'obtenir l'effusivité thermique et la conductivité thermique à partir d'un seul enregistrement du thermogramme. La diffusivité thermique est par suite déduite par simple calcul. L'objectif principal du travail est de mettre en évidence l'influence de la teneur en eau et du type de bois sur leurs propriétés thermophysiques afin de d'envisager leur possible utilisation dans l'habitat en conditions climatiques variables. Le comportement thermique des échantillons en fonction de différentes épaisseurs a été également étudié. La valeur de la conductivité thermique, de la diffusivité thermique et de l'effusivité thermique varient respectivement entre 0,112 et 0,225~$\unit{W.m^{-1}.K{-1}}$; 0,422 et $1,296\ 10^{-7}\ \unit{m^2.s^{-1}}$ et 362,83 et 1096,68~$\unit{J.m^{-2}.K^{-1}.s^{-0,5}}$. Les résultats obtenus montrent que la conductivité thermique et l'effusivité thermique croissent fortement en fonction de la teneur en eau à titre d'exemple l'effusivité thermique passe de sa valeur minimale 362,131~$\unit{J.m^{-2}.K^{-1}.s^{-0,5}}$. à 0\% d'humidité à sa valeur maximale 698,85~$\unit{J.m^{-2}.K^{-1}.s^{-0,5}}$. à 51,06\% d'humidité pour le bois afzélia, la diffusivité thermique quant à elle varie d'une manière complexe en fonction de la teneur en eau mais présente un maxima entre 0 et 20\% de teneur en eau. On remarque à travers cette expérimentation que le bois pterocarpus erinaceus est meilleur isolant thermique par rapport au bois afzélia. Ces résultats montrent clairement que la teneur en eau influence fortement le comportement thermique de ces bois. Par conséquent, il faut tenir grandement compte de ce paramètre si l'on désire utiliser ces bois dans la construction de l'habitat. En perspective, afin de savoir les états d'équilibres hygro-thermiques de ses essences de bois sous des conditions climatiques bien définis des études des isothermes de désorptions s'avère indispensable

Absorption refrigeration machines need energy for their proper functioning. Much of this energy is lost due to energy dissipation by friction or during heat transfer under temperature difference. But thanks to the various methods of existing thermodynamic analyses of entropy and exergy, the energy losses at the various nodes of the absorption refrigeration machines can be investigated, then minimized in order to improve the performances. In this paper, the specific entropy, the dissipated energy (non-dimensional entropy generation), as well as the loss of exergy at the different elements of the solar absorption machine were calculated and analysed as well as the exergy efficiency of the system. The results give information on the actual weaknesses a solar absorption machine having a nominal cooling capacity of 10 kW. It was found that the generator is the most energy-dissipating component with 44.16% (meaning 4.30 W/K), followed by the absorber with 37.58% (3.66 W/K). The greatest loss of exergy is obtained at the generator with 28.50%, followed by the heat exchanger with 28.48% of the total loss of exergy.

Increasingly high quantities of waste plastics cause major environmental problems in Benin due both to the non-biodegradability of such by-products of the petroleum industry and to a lack of appropriate means of treatment. An option to valorise waste plastic bags is to use these in construction processes. This article studies the incorporation of waste plastic bags into cement-mortar with the aim of reducing proliferation. It explores the immediate consequences of cement-mortar-plastic combinations, such as changes in the resultant composite’s water absorption ratio and mechanical properties. The process of making the composite includes some main steps, during which waste plastic bags are first melted at 200°C-250°C and then mixed with sand aggregates. These coated aggregates are then mixed with cement and water into mortar. Moulded specimens of derived composites are then submitted to hydrothermal ripening and mechanical analysis. Experimental results allow optimizing the sand-aggregates coating process, providing data to locate the most appropriate ratio of plastic bags to be between 8% and 12% (wt/wt.mix):theoretically10.07%. The adopted practical value was 10%, leading to cement-plastic-mortar compositeswith90%reduction of water absorption ratio and 11.60% decrease in absolute density, compared to uncoated sand composites. Similarly, the mechanical strengths of composites were 8.83±0.34MPa in compression and 4.1±0.82MPa in 3-points flexural bending, corresponding to 74.1% and 48.1% weakening, respectively. These resistances were judged to be weak, with the result that the composites thus obtained cannot be used as the main elements of structural constructions. Potential applications are water-sealing/repellent materials in walls/soil, ending with good values of a wear-resistance index similar to commercial quarry tiles/stoneware.Keywords: Waste plastic bags, cement-plastic-mortar composite, aggregates coating, ripening, water-absorption ratio, wear-resistance index

In recent years, Design for sustainability that is a criteria of integration approach to environmental, economic and social in the product development phase has been tested and successfully implemented in the West Northern Europe, Japan and in some cities in the United States. However, in many parts of the world, especially in the newly industrialized countries of Asia, Latin and South America and especially in Africa, experiments with design for sustainability are rare view sometimes nonexistent. This work presents some results on the usability of the approach Design for Sustainability work put into a country in West Africa called "Benin" in order to judge its performance and relevance and, if possible following the appropriate ground realities. The product on which the work is performed is the machine condiments traditionally manufactured and spread throughout the Benin. This product has many harmful effects on the body because of its poor design and materials used for its design. We integrated in this research Beninese students and local businesses Beninese. These students were trained on the approach Design for Sustainability and implemented in selected companies. Which has achieved satisfactory results. The aim is firstly to see whether the approach Design for Sustainability will be effective, efficient, satisfying, easy to learn and to remember in the context of the Benin side of students and secondly if it can improve the working conditions , reorganizing management, reduce design time and increase the number of local businesses Beninese case design and manufacture of food processing equipment.; Dans ces dernières années, l'éco-socio-conception qui est une approche d'intégration des critères d'impacts environnementaux, économiques et sociaux dans la phase de développement des produits a été testée et mise en oeuvre avec succès dans l'Ouest de l'Europe du Nord, au Japon et dans certaines villes des Etats-Unis. Nous avons intégré dans ce travail de recherche les étudiants Béninois ainsi que les entreprises locales Béninoises. Ces étudiants ont suivi une formation sur l'approche Design for Sustainability et l'ont mis en oeuvre dans les entreprises sélectionnées. Ce qui a permis d'atteindre des résultats satisfaisants. Le but visé est de voir d'une part si l'approche Design for Sustainabilitysera efficace, efficience, satisfaisant, facile à apprendre et mémorisable dans le contexte Béninois du côté des étudiants et d'autre part si elle peut améliorer les conditions de travail, réorganiser la gestion, réduire le temps de conception et augmenter le chiffre d'affaire des entreprises locales Béninoises de conception et de fabrication d'équipements agro-alimentaire.

The use of raw clay in housing construction dates back from ancient times and is still living on. Traditional habitat comprising various buildings all over different places of our planet, give evidence. Among any other pathologies affecting naked earthen walls, the rain water wash remains a major concern and deserves careful consideration. Which justifies the interest of this research focused on the protection means of such types of walls. This article relates the experiment conducted on low walls made out of raw clay mixed with composite protecting products (traditional and modern ones as well), being tested to intensive water floods. The result of the tests assessed through efficiency of the protecting materials, shows that the locust bean tree (local tree) fruit husk extract added to raw clay mortar and carefully blended seems to provide better ability to protect walls against water assault. Moreover, consistency check and plasticity reveal better performance in clay material properties.

La pyrolyse semble être un procédé adapté au traitement des déchets à base de carton. Afin d’optimiser les conditions expérimentales du procédé de pyrolyse et d’apporter des éléments pour le dimensionnement d’une installation, une étude du comportement thermique du carton est indispensable. Dans le présent document, l’étude de la dégradation thermique d’échantillons de carton en conditions de pyrolyse a été réalisée par analyse thermogravimétrique. Des essais en régime isotherme sous atmosphère inerte (sous argon) à différentes températures 250, 280, 300 et 320°C ont été réalisés. Ces isothermes ont été choisies après détermination de la plage de température de dégradation du carton en utilisant l’ATG en régime dynamique. Un modèle cinétique en deux phases de pyrolyse a été utilisé pour déterminer les paramètres cinétiques : l’énergie d’activation, le facteur pré-exponentiel de la pyrolyse du carton ondulé dans les conditions isothermes.Mots clés : Analyse Thermogravimétrique, Carton, Cinétique, Energie d’Activation

International audience; We performed experiments using starch and its derivatives for impregnation coupled with thermal treatment and a new drying process called the Successive Pressure Drops Dehydration (DDS). This treatment aims to stabilise the archaeological waterlogged woods originated from different museums in France, Italy and Spain. Over all anti-shrink efficiency, (ASE) values in range of 77 to 94% were achieved. We chose to use the corresponding normal measured shrinks which values lay between 4,19 and 8,8 %. The resulting appearance, based on the colour analysis and the splits checking of the treated samples, was aesthetically pleasing. The scanning electronic microscopy and the determination of the dry matter gain showed that the starch and its derivatives penetrated and partially bulked the degraded woods. The experimental results showed that the devised process, starch impregnation plus thermal treatment and DDS, was a suitable treatment method for the conservation of the waterlogged wooden artefacts.
