Abstract

Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy reveals the formation of an equilibrium mixture of novel rhodium amido complexes in the reaction of LiNHPh with four Rh(I) complexes. Reaction in the presence of 10 equiv of LiNHPh leads to the formation of a stable single, anionic, bis(phosphine)bis(anilido)rhodium(I) complex. 31P(1H) and 103Rh(1H) NMR experiments help characterize the anionic complex.

Abstract

Pt NPs covered with zwitterionic amidinates as ligands exhibit an exciting ligand effect in the hydrogenation of carbonyl groups when electron donor/acceptor groups are introduced in the N-substituents., Ligand control of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) is rapidly gaining importance as ligands can stabilize the MNPs and regulate their catalytic properties. Herein we report the first example of Pt NPs ligated by imidazolium-amidinate ligands that bind strongly through the amidinate anion to the platinum surface atoms. The binding was established by 15N NMR spectroscopy, a precedent for nitrogen ligands on MNPs, and XPS. Both monodentate and bidentate coordination modes were found. DFT showed a high bonding energy of up to –48 kcal mol–1 for bidentate bonding to two adjacent metal atoms, which decreased to –28 ± 4 kcal mol–1 for monodentate bonding in the absence of impediments by other ligands. While the surface is densely covered with ligands, both IR and 13C MAS NMR spectra proved the adsorption of CO on the surface and thus the availability of sites for catalysis. A particle size dependent Knight shift was observed in the 13C MAS NMR spectra for the atoms that coordinate to the surface, but for small particles, ∼1.2 nm, it almost vanished, as theory for MNPs predicts; this had not been experimentally verified before. The Pt NPs were found to be catalysts for the hydrogenation of ketones and a notable ligand effect was observed in the hydrogenation of electron-poor carbonyl groups. The catalytic activity is influenced by remote electron donor/acceptor groups introduced in the aryl-N-substituents of the amidinates; p-anisyl groups on the ligand gave catalysts several times faster the ligand containing p-chlorophenyl groups.

Abstract

A family of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized Ru nanoparticles has been synthesized by using various NHC ligands, including a chiral one. The surface reactivity of the so-obtained RuNHC nanoparticles has been explored after reacting them with CO with the aim to probe the nature and availability of surface metal sites. Hydrogenation catalytic tests were also performed with the RuNHC NPs stabilized by a chiral ligand in order to evaluate their ability in enantioselective catalysis.

29. Synthesis of new RuO2@SiO2 composite nanomaterials and their application as catalytic filters for selective detection of gas sensors

Abstract

RuO2@SiO2 nanomaterials have been prepared using hybrid mesostructured silica (EtO)2P(O)(CH2)3SiO1.5/xSiO2 (x = 9, 16) by anchoring the metal precursor Ru(COD)(COT) (COD = 1, 3-cyclooctadiene, COT = 1, 3, 5-cyclooctatriene) within the pores of the organized silica matrix taking profit of the phosphonate moieties followed by i) decomposition under dihydrogen at room temperature in THF to achieve ruthenium nanoparticles containing materials and ii) a solid state thermal treatment at 450°C under air. The so-obtained RuO2@SiO2 nanomaterials were evaluated as catalytic filters when deposited onto gas sensors for the preferential detection of propane in a multicomponent gas mixture propane/carbon monoxide/nitrogen dioxide. The Ru and RuO2 nanoparticles containing materials have been characterised by elemental analysis, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption measurements and 31P and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).
