Our knowledge about the role of fly‐in fly‐out (FIFO) work‐related factors on the well‐being of workers across the FIFO work cycle is limited. This study examined the within‐person effects of job demand and control on psychological states and health behaviours. The study employed a daily diary design, with 23 FIFO workers in the Australian mining industry completing a daily diary survey for 28 consecutive days across on‐shift and off‐shift periods. Multilevel analyses showed FIFO workers experienced higher positive affect and enjoyed better sleep quality, but consumed more alcohol, during off‐shift days as compared to on‐shift days. Within‐person variability in daily demand (workload) was associated with higher anxious affect, whereas job control predicted lower anxious and depressed affects, higher positive affect, more alcohol consumption, and more physical activity. The within‐person effect of demand on anxious affect was moderated by job control such that those who generally had more control over their jobs had a smaller effect of demand on anxiety than those with less control. Results suggest potentially modifiable aspects of FIFO work—particularly job control—may help alleviate the impact of workload on poorer health behaviours and mood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Factors originating at the organizational, work, and individual levels are closely interrelated and intricately intertwined, affecting health rates. There was limited research on the interdependence and aggregate effects between multi‐source factors and occupational health and well‐being (OHW). It is challenging to achieve management goals. Therefore, considering cross‐level factors and across the "work environment‐stress‐exposure‐OHW" chain, individual vulnerability was considered. A Fuzzy Bayesian Belief Network (FBBN) driven by both domain knowledge and data was constructed to carve out the logic between multi‐source factors and OHW. Workers from four coal mines were surveyed twice in 6 months. 714 valid samples were included in the analysis. The interdependencies among multi‐source factors were identified by the Interpretive Structure Modeling method and the visual probability estimation was achieved based on FBBN. It revealed that the work and the organizational level were the root factors. Eight factors involved in work stress were mainly mediating, and actual exposure and individual vulnerability were direct factors. Pathway interventions and joint interventions were proposed. The prediction ability and scheme feasibility of FBBN were verified. The approach developed allows robust assessments of aggregate effects and obtains multi‐source factor importance. This article examines how activist networks contribute to the spatial diffusion of mining conflicts. We conduct a spatial econometric analysis of 590 geolocated mining properties in five countries of Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru), using the univariate local joint count test and the spatial autoregressive probit method. Empirically, the analysis provides strong and generalizable evidence for the spatial diffusion of conflicts related to mining, namely that a social conflict in a given mine site can be considered an independent cause of a distinct social conflict in another proximate mine site that is additional to the localized factors considered in the quantitative and qualitative literature to date. Moreover, we show that the diffusion effect is most evident at a territorial level of analysis, which leads us to make the theoretical argument that the diffusion of collective action depends on the geospatial resonance of activist claims and mobilizing frames based on a common territorial experience among otherwise distant groups. Large amounts of xanthate wastewater generated from mineral beneficiation significantly threaten the ecological environment. MOF photocatalysis is considered as a promising method for the removal of xanthate that is environmentally friendly and has high efficiency. However, the defects in MOFs limit their large-scale application due to poor visible light absorption efficiency and stability in water. In this study, a novel composite material composed of g-C 3 N 4 /AgCl/Ti-MOFs was prepared, and the catalytic degradation effect of butyl xanthate solution under different catalyst ratios and reaction conditions was investigated. The results showed that the composite could still maintain excellent catalytic performance (degradation rate of 99.5% within 90 min) under xenon light and low dosage. The characterization results showed that this excellent photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the following three points: 1) The material could absorb up to 670 nm visible light absorption capacity; 2) excellent stability was achieved (86% degradation efficiency after six cycles); and 3) the Schottky junctions formed by Ag0 and other materials in the composite increased the transfer rate of e−/h+. Prior consultation purports to mitigate socio-environmental conflict risks by creating deliberative and democratic spaces for local communities to influence decisions over newly proposed mining projects. Yet, many contest state and corporate claims to fair and inclusive decision-making, insisting that mines are often approved in violation of their human rights. Using a critical political economy of environmental governance approach, we analyze the multilevel governance regime which informs the practice of prior consultation within the global mining industry. We argue that this regime has become 'captured' by mining interests, as evidenced by the 'market-enabling' procedures which restrict communities' capacity to exercise self-determination. Furthermore, we suggest that this leaves some local groups with little choice but to engage in risky protest action to express opposition. We utilize the Brazilian and Peruvian mining sectors as illustrative vignettes, for which data were collected from extensive fieldwork in both countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With climate change fueling more frequent and intense periods of hot weather, heat stress management programs are becoming increasingly important for protecting the health and safety of workers in the Canadian mining industry. While the inclusion of heat-mitigation measures such as those provided by the American College of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) are commonly employed by industry, there is a need to develop more comprehensive industry-specific measures for heat stress prevention and management. To better understand current heat management practices and identify opportunities for improvement, an exploratory survey of 51 employees responsible for health and safety at underground mining (n = 35), and surface operations (n = 16) (e.g., open-pit mining, milling, smelting, and exploration site) was conducted in Canada. The respondents answered 50 questions related to workplace heat stress management, including descriptors of the workplace environment, perceived heat stress hazard, administration of heat stress management programming, heat stress emergency procedures, environmental monitoring strategies, and knowledge of mining-specific regulations related to heat stress. Twenty-four managers (47%) reported that heat-related illnesses led to restricted duty or lost time claims at their site, with a median of 5 [IQR: 2–10, max: 30] reportable heat-related illnesses occurring per site annually. Many also felt that heat-related illnesses are under-reported by their workforce (n = 36, 71%). Most sites reported established heat stress management programs to prevent heat illness (n = 43, 84%), typically based on the TLVs (n = 38, 75%). Although some organizations do conduct pre-task evaluations for heat stress (n = 30, 59%), more than half do not conduct post-job evaluations (n = 28, 55%) or pre-employment screening for heat stress vulnerability (n = 3, 6%). While our findings indicate that the health and safety managers recognize the hazard posed by heat and have stated practices to help address the hazard, we also observed inconsistencies in heat stress management programming across the sample. Developing and adopting a standard heat stress management and reporting system would be an important step toward protecting workers from existing and emerging threats from extreme heat and climate change. In the mining industry, dumper operators are exposed to combined noise and vibration, leading to discomfort. Dumpers are heavy earth-moving machines that are used for carrying bulky material in mining industries. Dumper operators are exposed to physical hazards such as vibration, noise, heat, and humidity, throughout their lifetime of work. Fifty-four dumper operators working in mines were selected for this study. Noise was measured as per the guidelines of the Directorate General Mining Safety, India, and whole-body vibration was measured as per the guidelines of ISO 2631-1::1997. Noise Pro DLX, Type 2 noise dosimeters were used for the measurement of personal noise exposure while SV-106 six channels vibration meters were used for whole body vibration (WBV) exposure measurement. Discomfort was calculated using the regression equation developed by Huang and Griffin (2014). The total discomfort level of mine operators was about 192. A predictive equation was derived by using a regression model to determine the contribution of individual variables causing discomfort. It was observed that for every unit increase in noise (LAeq), discomfort increased by 10.20 units, a one-unit increase in vibration (A (8)) led to a 51.7-unit increase in discomfort, while an increase of one unit of exposure time increased the discomfort level by 5.24 units. The inevitable mine lifecycle sequences of the mining industry and the eventual closure of mines has dramatic impacts on mining communities. The complexities of mine closure and planning for a different future beyond mining demand prescient preparation, preferably long before mines close, to optimise community participation in planning and enhance change management opportunities. Convincing others of the usefulness of imagining a future that is so different from the status quo is challenging, and it is especially difficult bringing an entire community on a long‐term planning journey. The Shire of Coolgardie, a small Western Australian local government authority, has embarked on a long‐term mission to build economic and social resilience, shoring up funds that will assist the Shire to ride out the inevitable mine lifecycle sequences of and diversify its income bases. This article builds an evidence‐based approximation of the economic and social benefits of the initiatives accrued across the Shire, outlining the calculated risks taken by the Shire in its quest to ultimately reorient the local economy to one less dependent on mining income and employment. The article concludes with lessons learned and a discussion regarding the replicability of the successful initiatives for other local government authorities elsewhere, particularly in Australia where the legislative restrictions to generate own‐source revenues are so severely limiting. Objective: The aim of the study was to verify if soft-skills training is an effective intervention in reducing work-related stress among miners, that is, people who run the risk of losing health and/or life due to unpredictable natural forces or human error at work. Background: The motivation for the intervention was based on Job Demands-Resources model where soft skills are job resources that help individuals to cope with or prevent high demands of the environment. The needed skills as well as work demands were first investigated and then a custom training was developed. The rationale for introducing soft-skills training into the work environment can be seen as compatible with the Human Capital Model (HCM) which is designed to stimulate positive organizational behaviour by providing an effective approach to ensure employees' adequate coping with work-related stress. Method: 96 volunteer employees were assigned to intervention (n = 48) and comparison (n = 48) groups. 16-hour tailored training covered tasks and simulation games related to communication, teambuilding, self-management and conflict resolution skills. Job Content Questionnaire, Occupational Stress Indicator (modified to fit the mining environment) and General Health Questionnaire were used in the study. A MANOVA with effect-size measures was conducted. Results: Results revealed a significant increase in decision latitude and social support for the trainees. A substantial decrease in stress was also observed, along with a significant decrease in general health problems. There were no such changes in the comparison group. Conclusions: A soft-skills training, including communication, teamwork, self-motivation and conflict-resolution skills, helped participants to cope better with the stressful environment and improved their mental health. These effects lasted three months later. Application: The intervention improved miners' psychosocial health and the strategies of coping with stress, which increased safety and health in the company. Investigating the effectiveness of such interventions included in the general Human Capital Model, as it was done in the study, might be a step forward towards building an interdisciplinary approach for health and safety and human resources. This paper offers a critical reflection on the ways extractive industries manifest within and across place. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Mexico over 8 months in 2019–2020, this paper focuses on the experiences of residents living in a town adjacent to an underground silver mine in Valles Centrales, Oaxaca, Mexico. I argue that a focus on lived, sensory and long-term engagement between people and mining opens new avenues for geographers to consider 'what mining does'. Looking beyond the language of 'impacts', I build upon work on cultural geographies of presence and absence to put forward the notion of 'mining presence': mining's present and absent affects and materialities that interweave with residents' everyday lives, homes, bodies, and landscapes. In other words, I explore the qualities of mining that bring the San José mine into a neighbouring town and mediate spaces of daily life. In doing so, this paper contributes to the geographies of the extractive industries by showing that attention to life with mining requires a re-thinking of the spatiotemporal relations of extraction itself. Mica waste, a type of commercial waste produced in bulk quantities by the mica mining industry, was processed and added to Natural Rubber Latex Foams (NRLF) made of centrifuged and creamed latex. Following the Dunlop method, NRLF composites with various Processed Mica Waste (PMW) loadings (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 Phr) were prepared, and the thermo-physical characteristics were compared. Thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity of NRLF against the latex type and mica loading were compared for the first time. NRLFs prepared using creamed latex exhibit 33 and 50 mm (width and height) cell diameter, 3 ibf hardness, 281 % swelling index improvements and 0.05 Wm-1K-1 thermal conductivity, and 1 °C glass transition temperature (Tg) reductions than centrifuged NRLF and indistinguishable electrical resistivity. With the addition of mica (0-10 Phr), both NRLF types showed a similar ascending trend in hardness (42 ibf), water absorption (16 %), Tg (7 °C), thermal conductivity (0.54 Wm-1K-1), electrical resistivity (69 × 10³ U m) with decreasing gel time (3 min) and swelling index (550 %). The key objective of this research was to prepare PMW-filled NRLF and compare structural, electrical and thermo-physical properties, for the first time, against mica content and latex type. Introduction: This article aimed to analyze the contributions of research related to relevant variables on the current state of safety and health of families of San Jorge by mercury from mining activities, allowing to glimpse possible future consequences to the health of the communities of Ayapel - Córdoba in the Colombian Caribbean from the meanings and practices developed and systematized in the different sources of information. Methodology: The review was carried out from 2010 to 2022 and was conducted through a systematic literature review and meta-analysis following PRISMA using different descriptors in the Scopus, Scielo and PUBMED databases, as well as in the Colombian regulations. Results: socio-environmental, socioeconomic and health and disease categories were obtained where it revealed that primary publications were evidently analytical and sociodemographic, which reveal different socio-environmental and symptomatological problems associated with the toxicity and genotoxicity of mercury coming mainly from artisanal and illegal mining. Conclusions: Conclusions: The studies conducted primarily focus on the department of Córdoba, highlighting the need for research in other regions of the country, with a focus on public health. This implies addressing the raised issue and properly addressing it, theorizing it from other scientific disciplines and from the perspective of public health, promoting new interdisciplinary research lines with the aim of preventing and providing timely knowledge about the health impacts on populations engaged in such practices. Photovoice is an increasingly popular research method across disciplines due to its flexibility and capacity for generating rich data. This article argues that while its practical virtues are abundant, the theoretical contributions of photovoice to qualitative research are just as important. We argue that photographs can act as boundary objects that enable collective sensemaking at multiple stages of a research study. This is fulfilled through a case study of gas extraction and distribution networks and their social consequences in West Virginia, a state in the United States deeply entrenched geographically and culturally in natural resource extraction. Ultimately, this case study demonstrates that photovoice as a process and photographs as artifacts are sites for rich collaborative interpretation and provides a model of how to operationalize photos in multiple stages of research so that study designs are centered around participant experiences. Fishing and sand mining in Cambodia may not appear to have much in common. However, digging deeper reveals important parallels. Both fishing and sand mining support livelihoods and are connected to a limited natural resource. Meanwhile, they are both typified by precarious livelihoods, on the one hand, and overexploitation, on the other. In bringing these two topics together, the paper combines empirical qualitative research from two separate studies conducted by the co-authors in Cambodia, one in coastal fishing villages and another in the sand mining industry along the Mekong River. We argue that the interplay between fishing and sand mining has paradoxical impacts on livelihoods, supporting one group while undermining another. Using a precarity analysis lens, we show how an unconventional, and largely invisible frontier of natural resource exploitation—sand mining—is intertwined with fisheries, and expands our understanding of the relationship between precarious labour, environmental change, and livelihoods. The objective of this study was to explore the association between ambient temperature and injuries and illnesses experienced by mine industry workers. Eleven years of de-identified data from a mine industry company in Australia was explored in regards to injuries and illnesses occurring due to outdoor exposure. Each case was filtered for reported symptoms, and meteorological data to match the location of the mine site and date reported were sourced. Of the 18 931 injuries and illnesses observed over the 11-year period, 151 cases of heat-related illness due to outdoor exposure were reported. Twenty-five conditions/symptoms of heat-illness were found, with the most prevalent being dehydration (n = 81), followed by heat rash (n = 40), dizziness (n = 24), and headache (n = 23). The mean number of symptoms reported by each worker was 2 ± 1. There was a positive correlation between ambient temperature and injuries/illnesses (r 2 = 0.89, P < 0.001), where, as temperature increased so did the number of reported heat-related illnesses. Underreporting of heat-related illness and injury in the mining industry is likely, which is a risk to the health and wellbeing of employees. Objectives Since the 1920s, Zambia's mining sector has experienced growth, which has increased the number of mine workers employed in the industry. Consequently, the potential for occupational exposure and prevalence of occupational diseases have also increased. Unfortunately, Zambia does not currently have legislative guidelines for workplace air monitoring and compliance. This study's objectives were to evaluate copper miners' personal exposure to respirable dust and respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and to assess workplace compliance using the European Standard for workplace air monitoring and measurement (EN689:2018). Methods This cross-sectional study collected 100 personal respirable dust exposure samples at a Zambian copper mine in 2023. These samples were weighed using NIOSH method 0600 and analyzed for crystalline silica using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (KBr pellet) (NIOSH method 7602). Additionally, 253 respirable dust exposure measurements collected at the mine between 2017 and 2022 were included for comparison. Results The median respirable dust exposure for the 2023 exposure measurements was 0.200 mg/m3 (95th percentile 2.871 mg/m3) compared to 0.400 mg/m3 (95th percentile 3.050 mg/m3) for the historic data. The median RCS exposure was 0.012 mg/m3 (95th percentile 0.163 mg/m3). Using EN689:2018, it was found that from 15 work areas, only six work areas complied with the standard for respirable dust exposure and only seven work areas complied with the standard for RCS exposure. Conclusions At the mining site, several work areas had substantial exposure to respirable dust and RCS. Therefore, management needs to prioritize these areas when implementing control measures to reduce dust exposure. For the Zambia mining industry to manage exposure to respirable dust and RCS, it is necessary to implement standardized monitoring strategies. Objectives: This article synthesizes the evidence on what have been called innovative domestic financing mechanisms for health (i.e. any domestic revenue-raising mechanism allowing governments to diversify away from traditional approaches such as general taxation, value-added tax, user fees or any type of health insurance) aimed at increasing fiscal space for health in African countries. The article seeks to answer the following questions: What types of domestic innovative financial mechanisms have been used to finance health care across Africa? How much additional revenue have these innovative financing mechanisms raised? Has the revenue raised through these mechanisms been, or was it meant to be, earmarked for health? What is known about the policy process associated with their design and implementation? Methods: A systematic review of the published and grey literature was conducted. The review focused on identifying articles providing quantitative information about the additional financial resources generated through innovative domestic financing mechanisms for health care in Africa, and/or qualitative information about the policy process associated with the design or effective implementation of these financing mechanisms. Results: The search led to an initial list of 4035 articles. Ultimately, 15 studies were selected for narrative analysis. A wide range of study methods were identified, from literature reviews to qualitative and quantitative analysis and case studies. The financing mechanisms implemented or planned for were varied, the most common being taxes on mobile phones, alcohol and money transfers. Few articles documented the revenue that could be raised through these mechanisms. For those that did, the revenue projected to be raised was relatively low, ranging from 0.01% of GDP for alcohol tax alone to 0.49% of GDP if multiple levies were applied. In any case, virtually none of the mechanisms have apparently been implemented. The articles revealed that, prior to implementation, the political acceptability, the readiness of institutions to adapt to the proposed reform and the potential distortionary impact these reforms may have on the targeted industry all require careful consideration. From a design perspective, the fundamental question of earmarking proved complex both politically and administratively, with very few mechanisms actually earmarked, thus questioning whether they could effectively fill part of the health-financing gap. Finally, ensuring that these mechanisms supported the underlying equity objectives of universal health coverage was recognized as important. Conclusions: Additional research is needed to understand better the potential of innovative domestic revenue generating mechanisms to fill the financing gap for health in Africa and diversify away from more traditional financing approaches. Whilst their revenue potential in absolute terms seems limited, they could represent an avenue for broader tax reforms in support of health. The aim of this research is to investigate the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on total factor productivity (TFP) in the European mining industry, considering micro- and macroeconomic indicators of the relationship between CSR and TFP. Employing data from 40 European mining companies from content analysis, CSR Hub, and the World Bank between 2018 and 2021, this paper utilizes a combination of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and panel regression techniques to test the research hypotheses. The findings suggest that the TFP of European mining firms is positively affected by CSR initiatives implemented by the companies. Also, the empirical results depict that the CSR-TFP relationship is mainly established on institutional criteria. The results also indicate that CSR-related factors, namely, transparency and reporting, training, health and safety, and resource management, are the impacting indicators. The study broadens the horizons of this line of research and can be beneficial to CEOs, managers, experts, policymakers, decision-makers, and economists in the field of mining who are willing to promote responsible and sustainable mining. Mining is an important enterprise that will supply essential minerals for the country's infrastructural development. Mining is a key industry and a development engine in the Indian economy. The epidemic has had both immediate and long-term effects on the labour and industries in India. Short-term effects include the cessation of mineral production, salary loss due to absenteeism and pandemic limitations, unemployment, and the selling of minerals on the market. The reputation and economic health of industries, fresh mineral deposit exploration, and new mining complex development have all been impacted in long-term. Aside from the mining industry-specific impact of COVID-19, the social fabric of the mining workers has been impacted since they are living in an environment of fear and uncertainty. This paper attempts to analyse the effect of COVID-19 on extractive industries in India. It also focuses the steps which taken by the Indian government. The paper concluded with the negative effect of COVID-19 which disrupts the mining sector and the contribution declined during COVID-19. However, for instance from mineral rich-Odisha, the mining sector takes up by its growth in post COVID-19 period with remarkable increment from negative growth to high positive rate. Work-related deaths are a persistent occupational health issue that can be prevented. However, prevention opportunities can be hampered by a lack of adequate public health resources. The Western States Occupational Network (WestON) is a network of federal, state, and local occupational health professionals that includes a 19-state region of the United States. To encourage public health collaboration, WestON partners examined work-related fatalities within the region. Fatality counts (numerators) were obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries restricted-access research files for all workers ages ≥15 years and fatally injured in WestON states from 2011 through 2017. Estimates of full-time equivalent hours worked (FTE) (denominators) were retrieved from the BLS Current Population Survey. Annual average fatality rates were calculated as number of fatalities per 100,000 FTE over the study period. Rates were stratified by state, select demographics, industry sector, and event/exposure types. Pearson chi-squared tests and rate ratios with 95% confidence probability limits were used to assess rate differences. All analyses were conducted using SAS v.9.4. From 2011 through 2017, the annual average overall occupational fatality rate for the WestON region was 3.5 fatalities per 100,000 FTE, comparable to the overall U.S. fatality rate. Male workers had a fatality rate almost 10 times higher than female workers in the region. Fatality rates increased with successive age groups. Alaska and New Mexico had significantly higher fatality rates for all racial/ethnic groups compared to respective regional rates. Wyoming, North Dakota, and Montana had the three highest occupational fatality rates among foreign-born workers. Agriculture/forestry/fishing, mining/oil/gas extraction, and transportation/warehousing/utilities were industry sector groups with the three highest fatality rates regionally. Transportation-related incidents were the most frequent event type associated with occupational fatalities for all 19 states. Work-related fatalities are a crosscutting occupational public health priority. This analysis can be an impetus for collaborative multistate initiatives among a dynamic and varied occupational public health network to better meet the needs of a rapidly changing workforce. Long-term production planning for open-pit mines is recognised as one of the vital decision-making issues in open-pit mining operations. In addition, the ore grade is one of the most significant sources of uncertainty in a mining operation, as it classified run-of-mine material into ore and waste. In the classical approach, the destination of mining blocks is determined by comparing the estimated grade with a predetermined cut-off grade. However, the uncertainty of material grade dramatically affects production planning. In this paper, a novel model was developed based on the idea of simulating the grade to incorporate the risk of grade uncertainty. In the proposed model, the economic consequences of the assigned destination are calculated using the profit and loss functions and they are integrated with the production scheduling. The proposed production planning was implemented in an iron ore mine, and the results were discussed for classical, loss, and profit models. Results show that the net present value increases by 3.64% by implementing the profit function. In contrast, the loss function method reduces the net present value by 2.23% compared to the classic model. This happens because the amount of ore class is increased by 7.46% using the profit function method and decreased by 2.49% using the loss function method. Additionally, the coefficient of variation, as an index of uncertainty, was investigated. The results show that the loss function approach attempts to extract more reliable blocks in the early years and postpone the high-uncertain blocks to the later years of the production. Is Afghanistan a lost frontier? A superficial look might conform to this notion, given the continued state of unrest and instability, rampant hunger, malnutrition, illiteracy and unemployment. In this reflective discourse, however, we highlight a brighter (largely overlooked) aspect: her mineral reserves, estimated at nearly USD 1 trillion, including some of the world's richest lithium and rare earth elements (REEs), with high market value and critical for global climate combat policymaking (decarbonisation of infrastructure and attaining the net-zero target). By the same token, here, we offer a bird's-eye view of the Afghan mineral wealth, with special emphasis on lithium and REE, which, if rightly harnessed, could be an engine of economic growth and national development. In its present state of operations, however, that future seems a distant myth as the Afghan mining/mineral sector is undermined by a web of interlocking systemic barriers, including (a) a totalitarian regime, (b) institutional bottlenecks, (c) a lack of social integration (human rights violation and neoliberal outlook) and (d) a lack of foreign investments. To that end, we reflect on the world experience of nations where mineral resources have become engines of economic growth and national development, which may inspire the present Afghan leadership. Rejuvenating the mining/mineral sector may help the leadership simultaneously advance towards multiple targets: (a) stabilising the economy, (b) meeting multiple UN Sustainable Goals, (c) helping mobilising nation- and peace-building efforts and (d) contributing to global climate action. Collectively, these may help redeem the lost reputation in the eyes of the international community and get rid of the economic sanctions. Here, we offer a vision to the present Afghan leadership to rejuvenate the mineral sector: (a) an enabling business environment (increased ease of business and security), (b) a unified water-power supply framework (hydropower development), (c) a participatory ecosystem (an integrated social-ecological-technological framework) and (d) restricting illicit mineral trade (enforcing rule of law and equity). The mining industry is confronted with substantial challenges in achieving environmental sustainability, particularly regarding water usage, waste management, and dam safety. The increasing global demand for minerals has led to increased mining activities, resulting in significant environmental consequences. By 2025, an estimated 19 billion tons of solid tailings are projected to accumulate worldwide, exacerbating concerns over their management. Tailings storage facilities represent the largest water sinks within mining operations. The mismanagement of water content in tailings can compromise their stability, leading to potential dam failures and environmental catastrophes. In response to these pressing challenges, the mining industry is increasingly turning to innovative solutions such as tailings dewatering and water reuse/recycling strategies to promote sustainable development. This review paper aims to (I) redefine the role of mine tailings and explore their physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics; (II) discuss environmental concerns associated with conventional disposal methods; (III) explore recent advancements in dewatering techniques, assessing their potential for water recovery, technical and economic constraints, and sustainability considerations; (IV) and present challenges encountered in water treatment and recycling within the mining industry, highlighting areas for future research and potential obstacles in maximizing the value of mine tailings while minimizing their environmental impact. Purpose: This study aims to identify the main factors affecting export competitiveness and its barriers, focusing on the minerals industry so that a scale is achieved for measuring export competitiveness in this industry. Design/methodology/approach: The research was conducted with a mixed method approach in the minerals industry. Among the active companies involved in this industry, 34 export companies and export management companies were selected and evaluated. In the qualitative phase, 18 experts and managers of the industry were interviewed to identify the factors affecting the export competitiveness of these companies and the barriers ahead of them. In the quantitative phase, a questionnaire was distributed among 412 managers and experts in this industry to categorize the identified factors and to measure the relationships among them. For data analysis in the qualitative phase, theme analysis was used. For the quantitative phase, factor analysis and structural equation modeling were adopted. Findings: In addition to identifying the main components affecting the competitiveness of companies in exporting minerals as well as the main barriers ahead of them, the findings of the current research categorized these components using factor analysis. These components were categorized into factors, such as manufacturing factors, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, structural factors, competitive strategy and governmental supports. Afterward, their impacts on export competitiveness were measured and supported. Originality/value: Although some studies have been conducted to examine the competitiveness in different industries, no research has been found that has examined and identified the main factors affecting export competitiveness and their impacts in the minerals industry with a mixed quantitative and qualitative approach. The findings of this research may help managers and policymakers, at the industrial and national levels, to reach a scale for assessing the export companies involved in this industry by identifying the most essential factors of export competitiveness of minerals. This study investigates the correlation between previous coal mine safety policies and accidents in China. Data on coal mine accidents and government regulatory information from 2008 to 2021 are collected. The characteristics of coal mine accidents are analyzed, and safety policy indexes are identified. An ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model is established to quantitatively analyze the correlation between accidents and safety policy. The study finds that safety policies have some impact on accident occurrence in coal mines. Although there has been a decrease in accidents and deaths over time, higher mortality rates are observed during periods of increased production intensity and on weekends. Gas accidents are the most common, followed by roof and flood accidents. The study concludes that national safety policies with wider coverage and a stronger system are effective in preventing accidents, but caution should be exercised to avoid reduced vigilance with decreasing death rates. Objective: The aim of the study is to summarize Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program findings since 2014, focusing on prevalence of radiographic pneumoconiosis and abnormal spirometry by region. Methods: Analysis included the most recent Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program encounter for working miners during October 1, 2014–June 30, 2022. Central Appalachia consists of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Results: Pneumoconiosis prevalence was highest among underground miners, with 318 (6.2%) having radiographic evidence of disease. Central Appalachian miners were more likely to have evidence of pneumoconiosis (relative risk = 4.1 [3.4—5.0]) and abnormal spirometry (relative risk = 1.4 [1.2—1.6]) compared with all others. Conclusions: Central Appalachia is a hotspot for pneumoconiosis, as well as for other indicators of respiratory impairment in coal miners. Outreach for occupational respiratory health surveillance should focus on those areas most heavily affected, ensuring that miners are not hindered by perceived or actual barriers to this secondary intervention. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure and telomere length on lipids in coal miners. Methods Basic personal information of 637 coal miners was collected by questionnaire survey. Logistic regression, the Bayesian kernel machine regression model, and weighted quantile sum regression were used to analyze the effects of PAH metabolites and telomere length and their interactions on blood lipids. Results: High exposure to 9-hydroxyphenanthrene (OR = 1.586, 95% CI: 1.011–2.487) and telomere shortening (OR = 1.413, 95% CI: 1.005–1.985) were associated with dyslipidemia. Weighted quantile sum results showed that 9-hydroxyphenanthrene accounted for the largest proportion of dyslipidemia (weight = 0.66). The interaction results showed that high 9-hydroxyphenanthrene exposure and short telomeres were risk factors for dyslipidemia in coal miners (OR = 2.085, 95% CI: 1.121–3.879). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that 9-hydroxyphenanthrene and shorter telomeres are risk factors for dyslipidemia, and their interaction increases the risk of dyslipidemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Today, with the ever-increasing concerns about the widespread environmental impact of the mining industry, the movement of the mineral processing sectors, which heavily rely on various chemical and petroleum-origin reagents, to the green industry is imperative. Due to the advantages biotechnological approaches provide, bioprocessing is considered a benign alternative to conventional mineral processing techniques. Recent fundamental research works have directed the attention to the development of biotechnology and using microorganisms in the new field of biobeneficiation, especially bioflotation. The current review categorizes bioflotation methods into direct and indirect processes giving an in-depth insight into their concepts. Furthermore, this study provides a comprehensive review of research on different aspects of bioflotation, such as the effects of operating (mainly solid content and pH) and biotechnological parameters, potential mechanisms, and unexplored points, but from different, and practical viewpoints. Recent studies were summarized by categorizing microorganisms based on their wall structures, and growth temperature. It was disclosed based on the literature data that the nutritional requirement of variant microorganisms was only chemolithotroph. Further, the conducted researches in investigating optimum conditions for maximization of contact angle and adhesion forces to reach the maximum recovery were reviewed. In addition, existing problems and challenges of this field were investigated and it was found that economic barriers and obscurities were the main obstacles of industrial application in mining and mineral processing industries. This article explores the contribution of the Structural Topic Model (STM) to study the intertwining of social representations, attitudes, and identities. We examine newspapers' discourse on energy transition in a coal‐dependent region (Sulcis, Italy), whose identity and economy are built around mining and carbon‐intensive industry. Drawing upon Social Representations Theory, we combined STM and qualitative content analysis to examine how newspapers represented the energy issue in Sulcis, and how these representations (including denotative and connotative facets) differed according to the social identities' salience. Results show that coal is legitimated by discourses making salient local identities and providing continuity in the place–identity link, with no alternative to extractivism. When the Sardinian superordinate identity becomes salient, new themes emerge (e.g., renewables) but energy transition retains ambivalent or negative connotations. Overall representations seem to replicate and reflect processes of domination and injustice hindering a just transition, potentially explaining negative attitudes and collective resistance to decarbonization. This study aimed to model the dispersion of emitted SO2 from stacks and flares in one of the largest Gas Refinery Companies in the Middle East. Pollutant emission coefficients and air pollution's various sources contributions were determined based on the collected data after measuring SO2 concentrations in a fixed monitoring station (stack) and across different distances from it for a year. The SO2 release pattern was simulated, and annual pollutant concentrations in average periods of 1-hr and 24-hr were predicted using AERMOD 8.9.0. The maximum simulated ambient SO2 were 27,447 and 4592 µg/m3 in average sampling times of 1-hr and 24-hr, respectively. The hazard quotient of 95% percentile for children, teenagers, and adults due to inhalation of SO2 was more than one.The maximum concentration of SO2 in the 1-hour and 24-hour period in the study area was higher than the amount introduced by Iran's clean air standard and the WHO standard. The aim of this research is to obtain empirical evidence regarding the influence of management ownership, institutional ownership, independent ownership boards, audit committees on profitability (Return On Equity) in companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The sampling technique used purposive sampling, the research samples obtained were 15 companies for the 2019-2022 period so there were 60 analysis units. The research design is quantitative descriptive. The analysis technique in this research uses the panel data regression method. The research results show that management ownership, independent board ownership, and audit committee have no effect on profitability. Meanwhile, institutional ownership has a significant negative effect on profitability. The implication of this research is that companies must pay attention to institutional ownership shares, because they can have a negative impact on the company's profitability. As a major energy source in China, the occupational health and well‐being (OHW) of miners is a priority. Various statistical techniques have been used to identify factors or assess OHW to provide valuable information for the implementation of health promotion activities. The main bottleneck is the limited focus on solutions that address the demands of both organizations and individuals, and scientific and effective decision‐making is pending. Therefore, this study describes the OHW mechanism covering both antecedents and consequences through the driving force‐pressure‐state‐impact‐response model. A probabilistic model of management tradeoff analysis was established by using a Bayesian decision network. Causal relationships and dependencies between multiple factors are captured visually. The model was verified and applied with samples of miners (N = 816). The results showed that the comprehensive strategy (R5) was the best tactic, and the management effect of stress (R2) and vulnerability (R3) was prominent. This study provides a valuable tool for managers to identify priority management factors. Prioritizing tactics formulated from dual demands of organizational and individual can ensure project feasibility, operability, and effectiveness. Objective: this essay problematizes destructive organizational practices that produce and perpetuate spaces in ruins. Drawing from the practices of the mining industry in Brazil, exemplified by the rupture of the Fundão dam (MG), we theorize about the contributions of multispecies approaches to Administration. Thesis: we propose, through dialogues between organizational studies and multispecies studies, the concept of a multispecies organizing of space that transcends exclusively human relations. We consider space as both product and process in everyday organizational life, yet we highlight the limitations of the human-centric focus in the literature. We conceptualize spacing as a non-human production of practices entangling humans and actors composing environments and various species of plants, animals, fungi, and other forms of existence. Thus, we challenge a hegemonic view in the field, underscoring the importance of a more inclusive and ethical approach to spatial and organizational practices. Conclusions: we rethink social and organizational dynamics, emphasizing not only mining activity but other corporate practices through a spatialized and more-thanhuman perspective. The essay contributes ontologically by making visible the agency of other living beings in organizational processes and practices, methodologically by decentering the human in research, and politically by analyzing asymmetric power relations. Many oil and gas extraction (OGE) activities occur in high-heat environments, resulting in a significant risk of heat-related illness among outdoor workers in this industry. This report highlights cases of occupational heat-related illness that resulted in death and identifies common risk factors for heat-related fatalities and hospitalizations among OGE workers. Two databases maintained by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were reviewed to identify heat-related fatalities, hospitalizations, and associated risk factors among OGE workers. Nine fatalities and associated risk factors were identified during 2014–2019 from NIOSH's Fatalities in Oil and Gas Extraction (FOG) Database. Risk factors identified included those commonly associated with heat-related fatalities: new workers not acclimatized to heat, inadequate heat stress training, and underlying hypertension or cardiovascular disease. Of particular note, substance use was identified as a significant risk factor as more than half of the fatalities included a positive postmortem test for amphetamines or methamphetamines. Fifty heat-related hospitalizations were identified from OSHA's Severe Injury Report Database during January 2015–May 2021. Heat stress has been and will continue to be an important cause of fatality and adverse health effects in OGE as hot outdoor working conditions become more common and extreme. More emphasis on heat stress training, acclimatization regimens, medical screening, and implementation of workplace-supportive recovery programs may reduce heat-related fatalities and injuries in this industry. In response to increasing focus on occupational exposures to welding fume, a 10-year series of personal exposure measurements was analyzed for the two main welding processes (Shielded Metal Arc Welding or Stick and Tungsten Inert Gas welding or TIG) used in an oil refinery setting. Exposures from ancillary gouging and grinding were also analyzed. The operations were conducted under a permit-to-work system, which stipulated control measures in the form of ventilation and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) depending on the work environment, base metal, and welding process. The analysis focused on three health hazards of interest: total particulate (TP); hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)); and manganese (Mn). The study's aims were the analysis of exposure levels related to operational conditions to verify the adequacy of required control measures and the generation of quantitative information for the development of predictive exposure models. Arithmetic mean exposures were 2.01 mg/m3 for TP (n = 94), 13.86 µg/m3 for Cr (VI) (n = 160), and 0.024 mg/m3 for Mn (n = 95). Requirements and practices for ventilation and use of RPE appeared adequate for maintaining exposure levels below maximum use concentrations. Predictive models for mean exposure levels were developed using multiple linear regression. Different patterns emerged for TP, Cr (VI), and Mn exposure determinants. Enclosed or confined work environments were associated with elevated exposure levels, regardless of the provision of local exhaust or general dilution ventilation. Carbon arc, used with gouging and grinding, contributed significantly to TP exposure (p = 0.006). The relative TP source strengths of the two main welding processes were comparable to the literature data. For Cr (VI), stick welding was associated with approximately 50-fold (p < 0.001) higher exposure potential than TIG welding. For Mn, this difference was approximately 2.5-fold. Differences were observed across the three analytes in exposure reduction efficiency of local exhaust ventilation (LEV) compared to natural ventilation, possibly due to ineffective use in confined spaces. Among the first 20 high-priority chemical substances selected by USEPA to undergo risk evaluation as part of the Toxic Substances Control Act, as amended by the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act of 2016 is 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BD). Because much of the literature related to occupational exposure to 1,3-BD is associated with the use of the substance in synthetic rubber production and few data have been published for exposures to 1,3-BD manufacturing workers, existing industrial hygiene data collected at facilities where the substance is manufactured or processed as a reactant were compiled and analyzed. The dataset was comprised of personal air samples collected between 2010 and 2019 at facilities located throughout the United States and was compiled into a single database using a uniform data collection template. Data designated by the companies as full-shift were stratified by job group and one of three operational conditions of the workplace: routine, turnaround, and non-routine. Data designated by the companies as short-term and task-level were stratified by task description, sample duration, and operational condition. The final aggregated database contained a total of 5,676 full-shift personal samples. Mean concentrations of 1,3-BD for the job groups ranged from 0.012 ppm to 0.16 ppm. High-end estimates of 1,3-BD air concentrations for the job groups under routine operations ranged from 0.014 ppm to 0.23 ppm. The aggregated database also included 1,063 short-term and task-level personal samples. For short-term samples (< =15 min), mean concentrations ranged from 0.49 ppm to 3.9 ppm, with the highest concentrations observed for the cleaning and maintaining equipment tasks. For task samples with durations greater than 15 min, mean concentrations ranged from 0.49 to 3.6 ppm, with the highest concentrations observed for the unloading and loading task. In addition to the personal air sampling records, information on the use of PPE during various tasks was compiled and analyzed. This data set provides robust quantitative air concentration data and exposure control information for which occupational exposures to 1,3-BD in the Manufacturing and Processing as a Reactant condition of use can be assessed. This cross-sectional study aims to obtain knowledge about workers' exposure to airborne dust, bacterial and fungal species, endotoxin, biofilm formation, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in drilling waste treatment plants. In total, 408 full-shift personal samples, 66 work areas, 40 drilling waste, and reference (outdoor air and seawater) samples were analyzed. Some workers were exposed to high levels of endotoxin (207 EU/m3), bacteria (3.8 × 104 colony forming units (CFU)/m3 and 9.8 × 104 DNA copies/m3), or fungi (1.4 × 107 CFU/m3 and 3,600 copies/m3). The exposure levels to endotoxin, bacteria, and peaks of H2S were dependent on the treatment technique. All types of drilling waste contained large concentrations of bacteria compared to the seawater references. Elevated concentrations of airborne bacteria were found close to drilling waste basins. In total, 116, 146, and 112 different bacterial species were found in workers' exposure, work areas, and the drilling waste, respectively. An overlap in bacterial species found in the drilling waste and air (personal and work area) samples was found. Of the bacterial species found, 49 are classified as human pathogens such as Escherichia coli , Enterobacter cloacae , and Klebsiella oxytoca. In total, 44 fungal species were found in the working environment, and 6 of these are classified as human pathogens such as Aspergillus fumigatus. In conclusion, across the drilling waste treatment plants, human pathogens were present in the drilling waste, and workers' exposure was affected by the drilling waste treated at the plants with elevated exposure to endotoxin and bacteria. Background Globally, the number of small-scale miners (SSM) is estimated to be more than 25 million, but it supports the livelihoods of around 100 million individuals. In Tanzania, the number of SSM has increased from an estimated 150,000 in 1987 to ~1.5 million in 2017. The miners are at a high risk of occupational-related health challenges. The study aimed to assess the concentrations of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and radon among the tanzanite mining communities in Simanjiro District, Tanzania. Methods We carried out a cross-sectional study involving the Mererani mines in Tanzania. These are underground mines comprised of informally employed miners, i.e. SSM. Concentrations of RCS and radon gas were measured in 44 study units, i.e. 22 mining pits and within 22 houses in the general community, e.g. shops in the peri-mining community. A total of 132 respirable personal dust exposure samples (PDS), 3 from each of the study units were taken, but only 66 PDS from the mining pits were analysed, as this was the main interest of this study. Radon concentration was measured by continuous monitoring throughout the working shift (and overnight for residences) using AlphaGuard monitor. The medians and comparison to the reference values, OSHA USA PEL and WHO/IARC references, were done for RCS and radon, respectively, using SPSS Ver. 27.0.0). Results The median time-weighted average (TWA) concentration of the RCS in the mining pits was 1.23 mg/m3. Of all 66 personal dust samples from the mining pits, 65 (98.5%) had concentrations of RCS above the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 0.05 mg/m3. Mining pits had a median radon concentration of 169.50 bq/m3, which is above the World Health Organization (WHO)/International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICRP) recommended reference of 100.00 bq/m3 but not above the upper reference of 300.00 bq/m3, while the community buildings had a median radon concentration of 88.00 bq/m3. Overall, 9 (20.5%) and 17 (38.6%) radon measurements were above 300.00 bq/m3 and between 100.00 and 300.00 bq/m3 references, respectively. Specifically, in the mining pits, 9 (40.9%) test results were above 300.00 bq/m3, while none of the test results in the community was above 300.00 bq/m3. Conclusion The tanzanite SSM in Mererani we highly exposed to RCS, which increases the risk of pulmonary diseases, including silicosis, tuberculosis, and pulmonary malignancies. Immediate action by OSHA Tanzania should be enforcement of wearing respirators by all miners throughout the working hours. Health education programmes to the SSM must be strengthened and OSHA Tanzania should adopt the 0.05 mg/m3 PEL, and enforce other occupational health and safety measures, including regular use of dust suppression mechanisms (water spray and wet drilling) and monitoring of RCS exposures among SSM. Monitoring of radon exposure both in the mining pits and community buildings should be conducted, and mitigation measures should be implemented in areas that exceed the reference level of 100.00 bq/m3. Cornstarch is one of the most used depressants in mineral flotation operations. However, corn is a costly input for the Brazilian mineral industry, since its main destination is to serve the animal and human food market and exports. In this study, sorghum and millet, two cheaper starch sources, were tested in order to reduce the mining dependence on corn. A simplex lattice design mixture {3,4} was used to evaluate the best proportion of corn, millet, and sorghum flours to be used as a pyrochlore depressant in relation to the industrially adopted cornstarch (Stargill 6172 supplied by Cargill). Flotation tests were carried out on a bench scale Denver flotation cell. All tests were performed in triplicate in a single rougher stage. The results found suggest that sorghum flour was a stronger pyrochlore depressant compared to corn and millet flours, with an average Nb2O5 content of 1.72 ± 0.05% and recovery of 80.75 ± 4.10%. These values were close to the ones found with Stargill 6172 (1.32 ± 0.02 and 80.95 ± 1.13%, Nb2O5 content and recovery, respectively), the industrially adopted depressant. The marked price and the easiness in the production of the flour in relation to the extraction of starches makes the sorghum flour a potential pyrochlore depressant, replacing the industrially used cornstarch.
