The fusion of non-Abelian anyons is a fundamental operation in measurement-only topological quantum computation 1 . In one-dimensional topological superconductors (1DTSs) 2-4 , fusion amounts to a determination of the shared fermion parity of Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Here we introduce a device architecture 5 that is compatible with future tests of fusion rules. We implement a single-shot interferometric measurement of fermion parity 6-11 in indium arsenide-aluminium heterostructures with a gate-defined superconducting nanowire 12-14 . The interferometer is formed by tunnel-coupling the proximitized nanowire to quantum dots. The nanowire causes a state-dependent shift of the quantum capacitance of these quantum dots of up to 1 fF. Our quantum-capacitance measurements show flux h/2e-periodic bimodality with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 1 in 3.6 μs at optimal flux values. From the time traces of the quantum-capacitance measurements, we extract a dwell time in the two associated states that is longer than 1 ms at in-plane magnetic fields of approximately 2 T. We discuss the interpretation of our measurements in terms of both topologically trivial and non-trivial origins. Fabrication variability significantly impacts the performance of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), which makes it crucial to quantify the impact of fabrication variations before the final fabrication. Such analysis enables circuit and system designers to optimize their designs to be more robust and obtain maximum yield when designing for manufacturing. This work presents a simulation methodology, Reduced Spatial Correlation Matrix-based Monte-Carlo (RSCM-MC), to efficiently study the impact of spatially correlated fabrication variations on the performance of PICs. First, a simple and reliable method to extract physical correlation lengths, variability parameters that define the inverse of the spatial frequencies of width and height variations over a wafer, is presented. Then, the process of generating correlated variations for MC simulations using RSCM-MC methodology is presented. The methodology generates correlated variations by first creating a reduced correlation matrix containing spatial correlations between all the circuit components, and then processing it using Cholesky decomposition to obtain correlated variations for all circuit components. These variations are then used to conduct MC simulations. The accuracy and the computation performance of the proposed methodology are compared with other layout-dependent Monte-Carlo simulation methodologies, such as Virtual wafer-based Monte-Carlo (VW-MC). A Mach-Zehnder lattice filter is used to study the accuracy, and a second-order Mach-Zehnder filter and a 16x16 optical switch matrix system are used to compare the computational performance.

This work develops an enhanced Monte Carlo (MC) simulation methodology to predict the impacts of layout-dependent correlated manufacturing variations on the performance of photonics integrated circuits (PICs). First, to enable such performance prediction, we demonstrate a simple method with sub-nanometer accuracy to characterize photonics manufacturing variations, where the width and height for a fabricated waveguide can be extracted from the spectral response of a racetrack resonator. By measuring the spectral responses for a large number of identical resonators spread over a wafer, statistical results for the variations of waveguide width and height can be obtained. Second, we develop models for the layout-dependent enhanced MC simulation. Our models use netlist extraction to transfer physical layouts into circuit simulators. Spatially correlated physical variations across the PICs are simulated on a discrete grid and are mapped to each circuit component, so that the performance for each component can be updated according to its obtained variations, and therefore, circuit simulations take the correlated variations between components into account. The simulation flow and theoretical models for our layout-dependent enhanced MC simulation are detailed in this paper. As examples, several ring-resonator filter circuits are studied using the developed enhanced MC simulation, and statistical results from the simulations can predict both common-mode and differential-mode variations of the circuit performance.

Radio photonic technologies have emerged as a promising solution for addressing microwave frequency synthesis challenges in current and future communication and sensing systems. One particularly effective approach is the optoelectronic oscillator (OEO), a simple and cost-effective electro-optical system. The OEO can generate microwave signals with low phase noise and high oscillation frequencies, often outperforming traditional electrical methods. However, a notable disadvantage of the OEO compared to conventional signal generation methods is its significant frequency tuning step. This paper presents a novel approach for continuously controlling the output frequency of an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on integrated photonics. This is achieved by tuning an integrated optical delay line within a feedback loop. The analytical model developed in this study calculates the OEO's output frequency while accounting for nonlinear errors, enabling the consideration of various control schemes. Specifically, this study examines delay lines based on the Mach–Zehnder interferometer and microring resonators, which can be controlled by either the thermo-optic or electro-optic effect. To evaluate the model, we conducted numerical simulations using Ansys Lumerical software. The OEO that utilized an MRR-based electro-optical delay line demonstrated a tuning sensitivity of 174.5 MHz/V. The calculated frequency tuning sensitivity was as low as 6.98 kHz when utilizing the precision digital-to-analog converter with a minimum output voltage step of 40 μV. The proposed approach to controlling the frequency of the OEO can be implemented using discrete optical components; however, this approach restricts the minimum frequency tuning sensitivity. It provides an additional degree of freedom for frequency tuning within the OEO's operating range, which is ultimately limited by the amplitude-frequency characteristic of the notch filter. Thus, the proposed approach opens up new opportunities for increasing the accuracy and flexibility in generating microwave signals, which can be significant for various communications and radio engineering applications. Diabetes is a fast-developing medical issue that causes most renal and cardiac illnesses. Thus, diabetes management requires regular glucose monitoring. One potential technology is non-invasive glucometer monitoring. This work aims to develop a user-friendly near-infrared sensor-based non-invasive glucose monitoring system, correlating sensor output voltage variations with glucose levels, to provide accurate and convenient glucose monitoring for diabetes management. The objective is to validate the system's accuracy against existing fingerpick methods and analyze its performance across different age groups and food intake conditions through experimental testing and Clarke grid analysis. In our research, we propose a near-infrared sensor-based non-invasive-type glucose monitoring technique which is a user-friendly system. The experimental setup and prototype system are designed and implemented for measuring the variation of glucose level with respect to a sensor output voltage. Using Beer Lambert's law, the established results correlated the absorbance property of light with the sample concentration level. Demonstration of testing for different aged people was done under various food intake conditions. The obtained results are tabulated and validated with the existing fingerpick method and achieved an accuracy of 97.8%. Also, Clarke grid analysis has been done and depicted the pattern obtained. Background: The need for frequent blood glucose (BG) monitoring and the inconveniences associated with self-monitoring of BG (SMBG) have driven the development of non-invasive approaches. Methods: This prospective study aimed to investigate the accuracy of glucose level calculation using the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology Glucube® system. People with Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and normal glucose metabolism were included. Over one week, individuals performed glucose measurements with the Glucube® system and capillary blood fingersticks with a standard glucometer (Ascensia Contour® Next). To assess the impact of the improvement in dexterity, the accuracy variables were compared with the point-of-care (POC) glucometer Accu-Chek® Inform II in a one-week sub-study. Results: Overall, 105 subjects (mean age 53.8 ± 13.8 years, 50.5% female) participated, resulting in 1914 paired glucose measurements between 49 and 331 mg/dL. Total mean absolute relative difference (MARD) was 20.3%, MARD for values >100 mg/dL was 18.3%, and mean absolute deviation (MAD) for values <100 mg/dL was 24.9%. A total of 97.3% of measurements fell within A+B Parkes zones, and 58.8%, 76.9%, and 88.1% within +−20%, +−30%, or +−40% error, respectively. On completion, 62 participants (59%) fulfilled the one-week prospective sub-study. In this subgroup, the total MARD was reduced between day 1 and day 8 from 22.8 to 18.3% (p = 0.068). The percentages within Zone A were 51.6 vs. 61.2%, Zone B 46.8 vs. 33.9%, and Zone C 1.6 vs. 4.8%, and the sum of Parkes Zones A+B was 98.4 vs. 95.2% (p = 0.311) for day 1 and day 8, respectively. This review provides a comprehensive overview of point-of-care (PoC) devices across several key diagnostic applications, including blood analysis, infectious disease detection, neural interfaces, and commercialized integrated circuits (ICs). In the blood analysis section, the focus is on biomarkers such as glucose, dopamine, and aptamers, and their respective detection techniques. The infectious disease section explores PoC technologies for detecting pathogens, RNA, and DNA, highlighting innovations in molecular diagnostics. The neural interface section reviews advancements in neural recording and stimulation for therapeutic applications. Finally, a survey of commercialized ICs from companies such as Abbott and Medtronic is presented, showcasing existing PoC devices already in widespread clinical use. This study presents a high-accuracy, all-fiber mode division multiplexing (MDM) reconstructive spectrometer (RS). The MDM was achieved by utilizing a custom-designed 3 × 1 mode-selective photonics lantern to launch distinct spatial modes into the multimode fiber (MMF). This facilitated the information transmission by increasing light scattering processes, thereby encoding the optical spectra more comprehensively into speckle patterns. Spectral resolution of 2 pm and the recovery of 2000 spectral channels were accomplished. Compared to methods employing single-mode excitation and two-mode excitation, the three-mode excitation method reduced the recovered error by 88% and 50% respectively. A resolution enhancement approach based on alternating mode modulation was proposed, reaching the MMF limit for the 3 dB bandwidth of the spectral correlation function. The proof-of-concept study can be further extended to encompass diverse programmable mode excitations. Photonic integrated circuits (PIC) devices are impacted by fabrication tolerances and therefore, prior knowledge of such variations could improve the PIC fabrication process and overall yield. This paper presents a method for predicting the fabrication impacts on a telecommunication optical digital to analog converter (oDAC)-based pulse amplitude modulator level four (PAM-4) transmitter as a case study where the certainty of this passive device is subjected to random variation. Our findings allow us to estimate the production yield in a fabrication scenario using the symbol error rate (SER) benchmark and this contributes to the study of the viability of oDAC PAM-4 transmitters to replace conventional electrical digital to analog converter (eDAC) PAM-4 transmitters. In this paper, we compare the characteristics of several waveguide Bragg gratings (WBGs) with sinusoidal and rectangular corrugated sidewalls in high confinement integrated optics. Our measurements confirm the performance of both the rectangular and sinusoidal grating as band-rejection filters for TE-polarized signals in the telecom C-band. These measurements demonstrate record high extinction ratios of 35 and 28.91 dB for sinusoidal and rectangular WBGs with a rejection bandwidth as narrow as 4.42 and 6.165 nm. The simulation results and measurements show that the filter bandwidth and coupling coefficient can be changed by altering the corrugation width (Δ W), allowing us to control the filter's quality factor precisely. The bandwidth of rectangular WBGs drops for Δ W > --> 80 nm, constraining the design of devices requiring broadband WBGs. In contrast, the bandwidth of sinusoidal WBG continues to increase for Δ W > --> 80 nm, providing a wider bandwidth for designers. These findings demonstrate the potential for effective integration of new photonic functionalities into low-footprint electro-optical waveguide tools for sensing, communicating, and computing applications. Pulse oximeters are widely used in hospitals and homes for measurement of blood oxygen saturation level (SpO2) and heart rate (HR). Concern has been raised regarding a possible bias in obtaining pulse oximeter measurements from different fingertips and the potential effect of skin pigmentation (white, brown, and dark). In this study, we obtained 600 SpO2 measurements from 20 volunteers using three UK NHS-approved commercial pulse oximeters alongside our custom-developed sensor, and used the Munsell colour system (5YR and 7.5YR cards) to classify the participants' skin pigmentation into three distinct categories (white, brown, and dark). The statistical analysis using ANOVA post hoc tests (Bonferroni correction), a Bland–Altman plot, and a correlation test were then carried out to determine if there was clinical significance in measuring the SpO2 from different fingertips and to highlight if skin pigmentation affects the accuracy of SpO2 measurement. We analyze the two classic methods for chirped Integrated Bragg Gratings (IBGs) in Silicon-on-Insulator technology using the transfer matrix method based on the effective refractive index (neff) technique, which translates the geometry of an IBG into a matrix of neff depending on the wavelength. We also implement a procedure that allows engineering of the chirped IBG parameters, given a required bandwidth (BW) and group delay (GD). Finally, a complementary method for designing chirped IBG is proposed, showing a significant improvement in the bandwidth of the device or a moderation in the variation of the geometrical parameters of the grating. This study presents a biosensor working at a frequency of 3.5 GHz, which is designed as a square ring metamaterial resonator. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of blood amount on the metamaterial-based resonator sensor's sensitivity. The structure was constructed using Rogers-RT5880 material, with an overall area of 85.71 mm × 85.71 mm2. The simulation of the design involved modelling the blood samples using Debye 1st-order equations. The empirical results observed a noticeable shift towards a lower frequency range in the response and changes in the magnitude, corresponding to an increase in the blood sample's glucose concentration and thickness. Following this, the experiment was designed to corroborate the simulated results. The sensor achieved the highest sensitivity of 0.23 dB per 100 mg/dl change in glucose level when the thickness of blood was 0.1 mm. It was concluded from the results that the increase in the volume of blood increases the sensor's sensitivity. However, a trade-off mark is necessary in which an optimum sensitivity is achieved with blood volume as minimum as possible so that a noninvasive biosensor can be designed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The collection of single‐photon emission from a quantum dot (QD) in a Bragg waveguide through a photonic wire bond (PWB) via free‐space resonant frequency pumping at 1.6 K is demonstrated. The in‐fiber single photons show a small multiphoton contribution, quantified by a low second order photon autocorrelation value of gcorr(2)(0)=(5.9±0.8)×10−3$g_{{\mathrm{corr}}}^{(2)}\;(0) = ({5.9 \pm 0.8})\; \times {10^{ - 3}}$ (background‐corrected) or graw(2)(0)=(9.5±1.4)×10−2$g_{{\mathrm{raw}}}^{(2)}(0)\; = ({9.5 \pm 1.4})\; \times {10^{ - 2}}{\mathrm{\;}}$(raw data). The decay time of the QD is measured to be τ=440${\mathrm{\tau \;}} = {\mathrm{\;}}440$ ps. The PWB obviates the need for in‐cryostat alignment of the single‐photon source with an optical fiber and thus offers a route to scalable integration of quantum photonic devices in a cryogenic environment. Uniquely, the approach combines the QD‐waveguide technique, enabling resonant driving of individual QDs without the need for cross‐polarization filtering, and the PWB for deterministic, alignment‐free coupling of single‐photon sources to optical fibers. Light beams bearing orbital angular momentum (OAM) are used in various scientific and engineering applications, such as microscopy, laser material processing, and optical tweezers. Precise topological charge control is crucial for efficiently using vortex beams in different fields, such as information encoding in optical communications and sensor systems. This work presents a novel method for optimizing an emitting micro-ring resonator (MRR) for emitting vortex beams with variable orders of OAM. The MRR consists of a ring waveguide with periodic structures side-coupled to a bus waveguide. The resonator is tunable due to the phase change material Sb2Se3 deposited on the ring. This material can change from amorphous to crystalline while changing its refractive index. In the amorphous phase, it is 3.285 + 0i, while in the transition to the crystalline phase, it reaches 4.050 + 0i at emission wavelength 1550 nm. We used this property to control the vortex beam topological charge. In our study, we optimized the distance between the bus waveguide and the ring waveguide, the bending angle, and the width of the bus waveguide. The optimality criterion was chosen to maximize the flux density of the radiated energy emitted by the resonator. The numerical simulation results proved our method. The precise quantification of a dielectric waveguide core thickness, core width, core refractive index, and cladding refractive index across a wafer is critical for greater consistency and accuracy in photonic circuit fabrication. However, accurate wafer-scale measurements of these parameters have not yet been demonstrated. We have previously described a method for extracting these four parameters simultaneously from silicon nitride waveguides using unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometers on a single die. In this work, we show that this technique can be scaled to characterize these photonic parameters across an entire 300 mm wafer. The refractive indices of the core and cladding materials are found with relative standard deviations of the mean of 0.07% and 0.03%, respectively. The core width offset (bias) and thickness are found with relative standard deviations of 0.3% (2.6 nm) and 0.5% (1.1 nm), respectively. The extracted parameter maps suggest a radial variation of material indices and a planar variation of geometric parameters. We verify the extracted parameters by accurately predicting the performance of an unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer and the degeneracy between different modes in straight waveguides. We report a novel 2 × 2 broadband 3 dB coupler based on fast adiabatic mode evolution with a compact footprint and large bandwidth. The working principle of the coupler is based on the rapid adiabatic evolution of local eigenmodes of fishbone-like grating waveguides. Different from a traditional adiabatic coupling method realized by the slow change of the cross-section size of a strip waveguide, a fishbone waveguide allows faster adiabatic transition with proper structure and segment designs. The presented 3 dB coupler achieves a bandwidth range of 168 nm with an imbalance of no greater than ±0.1 dB only for a 9 μm coupling region which significantly improves existing adiabatic broadband couplers. BACKGROUND: Numerous laboratory tests are used in the diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus. The quality of the scientific evidence supporting the use of these assays varies substantially. APPROACH: An expert committee compiled evidence-based recommendations for laboratory analysis in screening, diagnosis, or monitoring of diabetes. The overall quality of the evidence and the strength of the recommendations were evaluated. The draft consensus recommendations were evaluated by invited reviewers and presented for public comment. Suggestions were incorporated as deemed appropriate by the authors (see Acknowledgments). The guidelines were reviewed by the Evidence Based Laboratory Medicine Committee and the Board of Directors of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry and by the Professional Practice Committee of the American Diabetes Association. CONTENT: Diabetes can be diagnosed by demonstrating increased concentrations of glucose in venous plasma or increased hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in the blood. Glycemic control is monitored by the people with diabetes measuring their own blood glucose with meters and/or with continuous interstitial glucose monitoring (CGM) devices and also by laboratory analysis of HbA1c. The potential roles of noninvasive glucose monitoring, genetic testing, and measurement of ketones, autoantibodies, urine albumin, insulin, proinsulin, and C-peptide are addressed. SUMMARY: The guidelines provide specific recommendations based on published data or derived from expert consensus. We present a new fab-in-the-loop reinforcement learning algorithm for the design of nano-photonic components that accounts for the imperfections present in nanofabrication processes. As a demonstration of the potential of this technique, we apply it to the design of photonic crystal grating couplers fabricated on an air clad 220 nm silicon on insulator single etch platform. This fab-in-the-loop algorithm improves the insertion loss from 8.8 to 3.24 dB. The widest bandwidth designs produced using our fab-in-the-loop algorithm can cover a 150 nm bandwidth with less than 10.2 dB of loss at their lowest point. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blood glucose monitoring is an essential aspect of disease management for individuals with diabetes. Unfortunately, traditional methods require collecting a blood sample and thus are invasive and inconvenient. Recent developments in minimally invasive continuous glucose monitors have provided a more convenient alternative for people with diabetes to track their glucose levels 24/7. Despite this progress, many challenges remain to establish a noninvasive monitoring technique that works accurately and reliably in the wild. This review encompasses the current advancements in noninvasive glucose sensing technology in vivo, delves into the common challenges faced by these systems, and offers an insightful outlook on existing and future solutions. In the present work, a method to determine the optical waveguide properties of silicon‐on‐insulator (SOI) integrated circuits has been developed. According to the explicit relations between transfer functions of a microring resonator and the waveguide properties the inner optical parameters could be extracted. An increase in accuracy can be achieved by measuring the transfer functions of additional elements, such as a straight waveguide and a directional coupler. It is shown that the developed method allows one to determine the coupling coefficient, damping decrement, Bragg grating coupler efficiency, and waveguide dispersion with high accuracy. The obtained optical waveguide properties are used for modeling the transmission of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer which is used as a control element. The modeling results demonstrate a good agreement with the experimental characteristics. Non-invasive glucose determination provides major advantages in health monitoring and protection. It enables widespread point-of-care testing, which is affordable, sensitive, specific, rapid and equipment-free. This work reports on the development and analytical performance of a colorimetric biosensor in detecting glucose in human urine. Highly porous polyamide microparticles were synthesized as the support for the glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) dyad, which was immobilized randomly or consecutively—first HRP and then GOx. The latter system was superior, as GH@PA-C showed much higher activity than the random system, and it was used to prepare the biosensor, along with the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine chromogen. When in contact with urine, the biosensor displayed a strict linear correlation between the color difference and the glucose concentration in urine in the range of 0.01–3.0 mM, as established by the CIELab image processing algorithm and UV-VIS measurements. The biosensor acted in 20 s and had a detection limit of 30.7 µM in urine, high operational activity at pH = 4–8 and unchanged detection performance after 30 days of storage. Its unique feature is the possibility of multiple consecutive uses without the serious deterioration of the recovery and dispersion values. The eye diagram performance of the Si ring modulator (RM) is Monte Carlo characterized with the RM equivalent circuit model. Inter-die statistical distributions of Si-RM model parameters are determined from simple RM optical transmission and electrical reflection coefficient measurement, and the correlated model parameter sets are randomly generated for Monte Carlo simulation of 40-Gbps 4-level pulse AM (PAM-4) eye diagrams within simulation program with IC emphasis. From the resulting Monte Carlo simulated eye diagrams, the yield for the Si RMs that satisfy optical modulation amplitude and the ratio of level mismatch requirements can be corroborated with measurement. Near-infrared technology is an emerging non-invasive technique utilized for various medical applications. Recently, there have been many attempts to utilize NIR technology for the continues monitoring of blood glucose levels through the skin. Different approaches and designs have been proposed for non-invasive blood glucose measurements. Light photons penetrating the skin can undergo multiple scattering events, and the actual optical pathlength becomes larger than the source-to-detector separation (optode spacing) in the reflection-mode configuration. Thus, the differential pathlength factor (DPF) must be incorporated into the modified Beer–Lambert law. The accurate estimation of the DPF values will lead to an accurate quantification of the physiological variations within the tissue. In this work, the aim was to systematically estimate the DPF for human skin for a range of source-to-detector separations and wavelengths. The Monte Carlo (MC) method was utilized to mimic the different layers of human skin with different optical properties and blood and water volume fractions. The spectral properties of the molecules depend on the matrix in which the interactions with other molecules inside the matrix affect the vibrational and rotational modes of the molecule. In this study, an absorption-based system was designed to show how the absorbance properties of the glucose change in polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel when compared with water. The measurements were performed at different wavelengths; 960 nm, 1450 nm, 1550 nm, and 1950 nm and it was observed that the system is sensitive to glucose at the wavelengths of 1450 and 1950 nm in PAAm hydrogel, whereas it is only sensitive at 1450 nm in water which is due to the high absorbance of water at 1950 nm. In PAAm hydrogel, water molecules mostly gather around the polymer chains via electrostatic interactions and the absorbance of water decreases which results in an increasing absorbance of glucose. According to the results, the responsivity of the system at 960 and 1550 nm, which are the wavelengths commonly used in LED-based systems for measuring glucose in literature, is not high enough for reliable glucose measurements when compared with 1450 and 1950 nm. The design of a refractometric sensing system for liquids analysis with a sensor and the scheme for its intensity interrogation combined on a single photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is proposed. A racetrack microring resonator with a channel for the analyzed liquid formed on the top is used as a sensor, and another microring resonator with a lower Q-factor is utilized to detect the change in the resonant wavelength of the sensor. As a measurement result, the optical power at its drop port is detected in comparison with the sum of the powers at the through and drop ports. Simulations showed the possibility of registering a change in the analyte refractive index with a sensitivity of 110 nm per refractive index unit. The proposed scheme was analyzed with a broadband source, as well as a source based on an optoelectronic oscillator using an optical phase modulator. The second case showed the fundamental possibility of implementing an intensity interrogator on a PIC using an external typical single-mode laser as a source. Meanwhile, additional simulations demonstrated an increased system sensitivity compared to the conventional interrogation scheme with a broadband or tunable light source. This paper reports on dielectric properties of ternary mixtures involving sodium chloride (NaCl) and sucrose (C12H22O11) dissolved into water (H2O). Broadband electromagnetic characterizations of such mixtures at various concentrations were performed, evidencing a dual behavior made of conductive effects at low frequencies and dipolar relaxation at microwave frequencies. Conductive and dielectric properties resulting from these both effects were integrated into predictive models for variations of Cole–Cole model parameters. Based upon this modelling, an innovative microwave-based sensor able to retrieve concentrations of both sodium chloride and sucrose in ternary aqueous solutions was introduced, designed, realized and assessed. Diabetes is becoming a global problem since it is the leading cause of mortality for many people all over the world. As a result, a diabetes sensor that is accurate, quick, and sensitive is required. On the basis of a binary photonic crystal, a new bio-photonic detector has been built for sensing diabetes-affected cells. It has two layers of Ge and TiN, with a defect cavity chosen as a sample and placed in the middle. The suggested biosensor's detecting mechanism is based on altering the refractive index of the sensing sample, which causes a shift in the location of the resonant peak inside the photonic band gap of transmittance spectra. The suggested structure's transmittance qualities are examined using the transfer matrix approach. The impact of incidence angle (TE and TM polarization) and defect cavity thickness on the performance of our proposed biosensor has been investigated. The suggested biosensor has a sensitivity of 2676.66 nm/RIU at optimal conditions, which is exceptionally high when compared to several previous studies. In addition, the suggested biosensor with a very low detection limit has an ultra-high-quality factor and figure of merit. The current standard of diabetes management depends upon the invasive blood pricking techniques. In recent times, the availability of minimally invasive continuous glucose monitoring devices have made some improvements in the life of diabetic patients however it has its own limitations which include painful insertion, excessive cost, discomfort and an active risk due to the presence of a foreign body under the skin. Due to all these factors, the non-invasive glucose monitoring has remain a subject of research for the last two decades and multiple techniques of non-invasive glucose monitoring have been proposed. These proposed techniques have the potential to be evolved into a wearable device for non-invasive diabetes management. This paper reviews research advances and major challenges of such techniques or methods in recent years and broadly classifies them into four types based on their detection principles. These four methods are: optical spectroscopy, photoacoustic spectroscopy, electromagnetic sensing and nanomaterial based sensing. The paper primarily focuses on the evolution of non-invasive technology from bench-top equipment to smart wearable devices for personalized non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring in these four methods. With the rapid evolve of wearable technology, all these four methods of non-invasive blood glucose monitoring independently or in combination of two or more have the potential to become a reality in the near future for efficient, affordable, accurate and pain-free diabetes management. Silicon photonic (SiP) evanescent-field biosensors aim to combine the information-rich readouts offered by lab-scale diagnostics, at a significantly lower cost, and with the portability and rapid time to result offered by paper-based assays. While SiP biosensors fabricated with conventional strip waveguides can offer good sensitivity for label-free detection in some applications, there is still opportunity for improvement. Efforts have been made to design higher-sensitivity SiP sensors with alternative waveguide geometries, including sub-wavelength gratings (SWGs). However, SWG-based devices are fragile and prone to damage, limiting their suitability for scalable and portable sensing. Here, we investigate SiP microring resonator sensors designed with SWG waveguides that contain a "fishbone" and highlight the improved robustness offered by this design. We present a framework for optimizing fishbone-style SWG waveguide geometries based on numerical simulations, then experimentally measure the performance of ring resonator sensors fabricated with the optimized waveguides, targeting operation in the O-band and C-band. For the O-band and C-band devices, we report bulk sensitivities up to 349 nm/RIU and 438 nm/RIU, respectively, and intrinsic limits of detection as low as 5.1 × 10−4 RIU and 7.1 × 10−4 RIU, respectively. This performance is comparable to the state of the art in SWG-based sensors, positioning fishbone SWG resonators as an attractive, more robust, alternative to conventional SWG designs. Diabetes is a serious health condition that requires patients to regularly monitor their blood glucose level, making the development of practical, compact, and non-invasive techniques essential. Optical glucose sensors—and, specifically, NIR sensors—have the advantages of being non-invasive, compact, inexpensive, and user-friendly devices. However, these sensors have low accuracy and are yet to be adopted by healthcare providers. In our previous work, we introduced a non-invasive dual-channel technique for NIR sensors, in which a long channel is utilized to measure the glucose level in the inner skin (dermis) layer, while a short channel is used to measure the noise signal of the superficial skin (epidermis) layer. In this work, we investigated the use of dual-NIR channels for patients with different skin colors (i.e., having different melanin concentrations). We also adopted a Monte Carlo simulation model that takes into consideration the differences between different skin layers, in terms of blood content, water content, melanin concentration in the epidermis layer, and skin optical proprieties. On the basis of the signal-to-noise ratio, as well as the sensitivities of both the epidermis and dermis layers, we suggest the selection of wavelengths and source-to-detector separation for optimal NIR channels under different skin melanin concentrations. We demonstrate the uniqueness, unclonability and secure authentication of N = 56 physical unclonable functions (PUFs) realized from silicon photonic moiré quasicrystal interferometers. Compared to prior photonic-PUF demonstrations typically limited in scale to only a handful of unique devices and on the order of 10 false authentication attempts, this work examines > 103 inter-device comparisons and false authentication attempts. Device fabrication is divided across two separate fabrication facilities, allowing for cross-fab analysis and emulation of a malicious foundry with exact knowledge of the PUF photonic circuit design and process. Our analysis also compares cross-correlation based authentication to the traditional Hamming distance method and experimentally demonstrates an authentication error rate AER = 0%, false authentication rate FAR = 0%, and an estimated probability of cloning below 10−30. This work validates the potential scalability of integrated photonic-PUFs which can attractively leverage mature wafer-scale manufacturing and automated contact-free optical probing. Neuromorphic photonic processors based on resonator weight banks are an emerging candidate technology for enabling modern artificial intelligence (AI) in high speed analog systems. These purpose-built analog devices implement vector multiplications with the physics of resonator devices, offering efficiency, latency, and throughput advantages over equivalent electronic circuits. Along with these advantages, however, often come the difficult challenges of compensation for fabrication variations and environmental disturbances. In this paper, we review sources of variation and disturbances from our experiments, as well as mathematically define quantities that model them. Then, we introduce how the physics of resonators can be exploited to weight and sum multiwavelength signals. Finally, we outline automated design and control methodologies necessary to create practical, manufacturable, and high accuracy/precision resonator weight banks that can withstand operating conditions in the field. Electromagnetic waves still show a great interest in non-invasive blood glucose detection (BGD). Near infrared (NIR), which is heavily used for this purpose, suffers due to cost, low absorption in biological chromospheres, and stratum corneum, and accuracy. One of the candidates that has not been widely investigated for BGD is visible laser light. Compared to NIR, the refractive index of red laser light is more sensitive to the variations in glucose level concentration resulting in faster response times. Red laser light also demonstrates both higher linearity and accuracy for BGD. On the other hand, a visible laser source is essential to realize low-cost sensor devices. The difficulty in using red laser for BGD is its low penetration depth. Long range surface plasmon resonance (LRSPR) can considerably improve the penetration depth. In this paper we designed and simulated with finite difference time domain (FDTD) a fingertip touch based non-invasive glucose sensor with LRSPR using a visible laser diode (LD) in an insulator-metal-insulator (IMI) structure coated onto a glass prism employing the matrix method. The results show that a symmetric design of SiO2-Au-SiO2 (420 nm - 50 nm - 420 nm) is necessary for achieving better sensitivity. Besides, a considerable improvement in the SPR dip for sensing application was observed when BK7 is used as a glass material. The detection limit and the sensitivity of detection of the proposed sensor are calculated and found to be 3.1 mM and 0.0139 o/mg/dl, respectively. Photonic neural network chips have been widely studied because of their low power consumption, high speed and large bandwidth. Using amplitude and phase to encode, photonic chips can accelerate complex-valued neural network computations. In this article, a photonic complex-valued neural network (PCNN) chip is designed. The scale of the single-core PCNN chip is limited because of optical losses, and the multicore architecture of the chip is used to improve computing capability. Further, for improving the performance of the PCNN, we propose the transformation layer, which can be implemented by the designed photonic chip to transform real-valued encoding to complex-valued encoding, which has richer information. Compared with real-valued input, the transformation layer can effectively improve the classification accuracy from 93.14% to 97.51% of a 64-dimensional input on the MNIST test set. Finally, we analyze the multicore computation of the PCNN. Compared with the single-core architecture, the multicore architecture can improve the classification accuracy by implementing larger neural networks and has better phase noise robustness. The proposed architecture and algorithms are beneficial to promote the accelerated computing of photonic chips for complex-valued neural networks and are promising for use in many applications, such as image recognition and signal processing. Directional couplers, as power splitters, have provided a significant contribution for light splitting and combining in silicon photonics. However, the splitting ratio of conventional directional couplers is very sensitive to wavelength, which limits the bandwidth and the transmission performance of the devices. In this work, a silicon nitride bent directional coupler with large bandwidth, large fabrication tolerance, and low thermal sensitivity is proposed and demonstrated through simulation analysis and experiments. Moreover, the fabrication process of 400 nm thick silicon nitride photonic devices is described, which are compatible with complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor technology. The 1 dB bandwidth of the bent waveguide coupler can reach 80 nm, and the thermal sensitivity is reduced by 85% compared to the silicon-based devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the poor conductivity of Fe based, Cu based and Co based electrode materials commonly used in the electrochemical detection of glucose, and the uneven stirring and poor conductivity of the traditional preparation method based on glassy carbon electrode. In order to solve the above problems, in this work, CdIn2O4 with high electrical conductivity was directly grown on three-dimensional (3D) Ni foam to prepare electrode materials for non-enzymatic glucose sensors. CdIn2O4 nanoparticles is prepared from cadmium acetate and indium nitrate hydrate in benzyl alcohol by non-aqueous sol–gel method. The electrocatalytic oxidation performances of CdIn2O4 electrode material for non-enzymatic glucose are studied. The results show that the proposed CdIn2O4 electrode material has good electrochemical properties and sensing performance for glucose detection. The electrochemical response of CdIn2O4 electrode material to glucose is recorded that calibration plot for glucose concentrations ranging from 1.0 μM to 1.0 mM (R2 = 0.99), a limit detection of 0.08 μM, an excellent sensitivity of 3.2925 mA.mM−1.cm−2, a rapid response time of 1.58 s, a good selectivity and a good long-term stability. These demonstrate the significant potential of CdIn2O4 electrode material based on 3D Ni foam as non-enzymatic glucose sensors, which makes it possible to use it as a practical glucose detector. This work could introduce a new concept of nanoparticles modified electrode material grown directly on 3D Ni foam, thus a simple and reliable electrochemical glucose sensor platform is realized. Reconfigurable linear optical processors can be used to perform linear transformations and are instrumental in effectively computing matrix–vector multiplications required in each neural network layer. In this paper, we characterize and compare two thermally tuned photonic integrated processors realized in silicon-on-insulator and silicon nitride platforms suited for extracting feature maps in convolutional neural networks. The reduction in bit resolution when crossing the processor is mainly due to optical losses, in the range 2.3–3.3 for the silicon-on-insulator chip and in the range 1.3–2.4 for the silicon nitride chip. However, the lower extinction ratio of Mach–Zehnder elements in the latter platform limits their expressivity (i.e., the capacity to implement any transformation) to 75%, compared to 97% of the former. Universal quantum computing holds the promise to fundamentally change today's information-based society, yet a hardware platform that will provide a clear path to fault-tolerant quantum computing remains elusive. One recently proposed platform involves the use of circuit-bound photons to build cluster states and perform one-way measurement-based quantum computations on arrays of long-coherence-time solid-state spin qubits. Herein, we discuss the challenges that are faced during any practical implementation of this architecture by itemizing the key physical building blocks and the constraints imposed on the spin qubits and the photonic circuit components by the requirements of fault-tolerant performance. These considerations point to silicon as a leading candidate to host such a platform, and a roadmap for developing a silicon photonic circuit-based platform for measurement-based, fault-tolerant universal quantum computing is offered. This paper reports a highly sensitive, non-invasive sensor for real-time glucose monitoring from interstitial fluid. The structure is comprised of a chip-less tag sensor which may be taped over the patient's skin and a reader, that can be embedded in a smartwatch. The tag sensor is energized through the established electromagnetic coupling between the tag and the reader and its frequency response is reflected on the spectrum of the reader in the same manner. The tag sensor consumes zero power as there is no requirement for any active readout or communication circuitry on the tag side. When measuring changes in glucose concentrations within saline replicating interstitial fluid, the sensor was able to detect glucose with an accuracy of ~ 1 mM/l over a physiological range of glucose concentrations with 38 kHz of the resonance frequency shift. This high sensitivity is attained as a result of the proposed new design and extended field concentration on the tag. The impact of some of the possible interferences on the response of the sensor's performance was also investigated. Variations in electrolyte concentrations within the test samples have a negligible effect on the response of the sensor unless these variations are supra-physiologically large. Under the various applications empowered by Internet of Things (IoT), a keen and associated healthcare service is especially a critical and necessary nowadays. The Arduino mega small scale controller is utilized to get the real time inputs and coordinate the sensors equipped from the field of interest. This procedure gives periodical monitoring of medical service for patient at home. To fulfill the different security necessities of cloud computing, the radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology is utilized for authentication purpose. This paper identifies three healthcare parameters, which are pulse rate, blood pressure and blood glucose level, acquired from the subject and enables the data to cloud for further computing. This information can be viewed by the doctor for clarification and suggestions. These parameters are organized and sent to a web page with the goal that user can see these parameters from any place in the world. The RFID tag is utilized as a security purpose to enact the patient module and enables the user to access the records. The microcontroller is additionally added with the buzzer to alert the guardian about the periodic updates obtained from the sensor yield. This would save the patient's life and take the periodic measure during the critical situation. Result obtained from device are analyzed for multiple regression analysis with PPBS and FBPS as independent variable and observed with P Value less than 0.01. Based on the results it is observed that the health monitoring system can easily identify the abnormality of the patient in home with 89.47% of accuracy and 10.52% of error rate. In this paper, an implementation of affordable medical technology health monitoring sensor system is developed and demonstrated to measure blood saturation levels (SpO2), heart rate and body temperature simultaneously. The embedded system is based on Arduino platform due to reliability and plug and play capability. The proposed pulse oximetry sensor uses spectrophotometry to calculate the ratio of oxygenated hemoglobin to deoxygenated hemoglobin which then is used to calculate the percentage of oxygenated blood levels. The accuracy of pulse oximeter is enhanced using light emitting diodes driver circuits, sample and hold circuits thus that a variable baseline can be established for different skin tones including the finger width where the measurements are undertaken. The embedded sensor system is designed to monitor SpO2, heart rate and body temperature and display the obtained results on an LCD. The measured vitals are also transmitted via Bluetooth module to Android mobile, and using Wi-Fi module to the internet, forming internet of things platform for the designed embedded system of sensors. The low cost embedded sensor system reported in this study can be used to monitor key health parameters of patients in hospitals or at home. The proposed affordable medical technology sensor system can be used as wearable wireless sensor which can be used as a plug and play sensor with Arduino to monitor human key health parameters. The measured health parameters are compared with commercially available ChoiceMMed pulse oximeter and a maximum deviation of 2% is observed which demonstrates that the proposed sensor device is highly accurate. A unique vapour transport cum glancing angle deposition (VT-GLAD) technique was employed to fabricate titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanowires (NWs). The NWs were grown and assembled to form the clusters. Both brookite (412) and rutile (002) phase for TiO2 was obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD). The d spacing of ~ 1.37 Å was calculated from the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of TiO2 NWs, which corresponds to (002) crystal plane. The silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) on TiO2 NWs were grown using thermal evaporation cum GLAD technique. The presence of Ag NPs on the TiO2 NWs enhanced the photoconduction as compared to bare TiO2 NWs device. The maximum photosensitivity of the Ag NPs/TiO2 NWs based device was recorded ~ 1.6 times compared to the bare TiO2 NWs based device at − 2.5 V. The Ag NPs containing device was highly UV sensitive and maximum responsivity for the device was calculated to be ~ 2.3 A/W at 370 nm. The device also possessed high responsivity rejection (RR) ratio of ~ 6.5 between UV (370 nm) and visible (450 nm) light. The Ag NPs decorated TiO2 NWs based detector also showed response to white light. The different concentration of glucose into deionised (DI) water-based solution was detected precisely under white light illumination. The normalised (light/dark) detector current/glucose concentration value was decreased from ~ 0.19 to ~ 0.05 at − 2.5 V, with an increase in glucose concentration into the solution from 40 mg/dl to 200 mg/dl. The magnitudes of the challenges facing electron-based metrology for post-CMOS technology are reviewed. Directed self-assembly, nanophotonics/plasmonics, and resistive switches and selectors are examined as exemplars of important post-CMOS technologies. Materials, devices, and architectures emerging from these technologies pose new metrology requirements: defect detection, possibly subsurface, in soft materials, accurate measurement of size, shape, and roughness of structures for nanophotonic devices, contamination-free measurement of surface-sensitive structures, and identification of subtle structural, chemical, or electronic changes of state associated with switching in non-volatile memory elements. Electron-beam techniques are examined in the light of these emerging requirements. The strong electron-matter interaction provides measurable signals from small sample features, rendering electron-beam methods more suitable than most for nanometer-scale metrology, but as is to be expected, solutions to many of the measurement challenges are yet to be demonstrated.
