Abstract

Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles).

Abstract

The @otw_melali Instagram account is an account that plays a role in informing and promoting hidden gems of Bali tourism by utilizing visual content owned by netizens to be reposted. In social media management, there are four important variables, namely context, communication, collaboration, connection that must be optimized so that the account's objectives can be achieved. In addition, there is a motive for community participation behind community participation in creating content that is reposted on @otw_melali. This study was conducted to analyze what factors influence netizen participation in creating visual content that is reposted on the @otw_melali Instagram account and also to evaluate whether the strategy used is an optimal strategy in utilizing netizen participation to promote Bali's hidden gems.The sampling technique used purposive sampling technique by distributing 100 questionnaires to netizens whose visual content had been reposted on Instagram @otw_melali. The data analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative and descriptive quantitative techniques with data collection techniques, namely archival data, elicitation data, and field note data. Based on the results of calculations using spss software, the results show that the factors that influence netizen participation in creating visual content are religious motive factors, context factors, connection factors, collaboration factors, economic motive factors, and communication factors. Moreover, it was found that all indicators of the 4C theory, namely context, communication, collaboration, connection which became the basic foundation of the Instagram @otw_melali strategy in utilizing netizen participation to promote Bali's hidden gems have been optimally implemented in the management of the @otw_melali Instagram account.

Abstract

During its approach to asteroid (101955) Bennu, NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft surveyed Bennu's immediate environment, photometric properties, and rotation state. Discovery of a dusty environment, a natural satellite, or unexpected asteroid characteristics would have had consequences for the mission's safety and observation strategy. Here we show that spacecraft observations during this period were highly sensitive to satellites (sub-meter scale) but reveal none, although later navigational images indicate that further investigation is needed. We constrain average dust production in September 2018 from Bennu's surface to an upper limit of 150 g s-1 averaged over 34 min. Bennu's disk-integrated photometric phase function validates measurements from the pre-encounter astronomical campaign. We demonstrate that Bennu's rotation rate is accelerating continuously at 3.63 ± 0.52 × 10-6 degrees day-2, likely due to the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect, with evolutionary implications.

Magnetization measurements for the compound SmCo(sub 3)B(sub 2) are performed on loose powder in magnetic fields to 5T and in the temperature region from 4.2 to 60 K. A magnetic first order transition occurs at T=43 K and metamagnetism occurs in the narrow temperature region between 43 and 47 K, for which some possible discussions are given.

Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze the crystalline electric field at rare earth sites and the induced magnetic moment at a cobalt site in RCo3B2 compounds. The compounds were prepared using an arc furnace. High field magnetization processes were measured at different temperatures. Experimental results indicated that the crystal field parameter is very large and supports a significant magnetic moment induced at the cobalt site.

Abstract

Thermal expansions of the lattice parameters a and c of the Rn+1Co(sub3n+5)B(sub2n) system were measures using an x-ray diffraction technique, to determine the nature of magnetic interactions and the chemical bond. A spontaneous magnetostriction occurs in the c plane only along the c axis. The positive spontaneous magnetostriction of the GdCo(sub4)B in the c plane is divided into three contributions. Thermal expansion coefficients in the c plane within the paramagnetic temperature region fall with rising n in the Gd system.

Abstract

Powdered and field-oriented samples of Gd(sub 1-x)Dy(sub x)Co(sub 4)B are subjected to x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements to determine their properties. The samples have a planar magnetic anisotropy at low temperatures, and axial magnetic anisotropy is exhibited at room temperatures and at higher temperatures. The crystallographic manufacturing process of the compound produces a permanent variation in the constituent elements of the samples.

Abstract

The magnetic characteristics of Sm1-xPrxCo4-yFe7B were investigated for possible permanent magnet applications. The results showed that Pr substitution caused an increase in the saturation moment but also resulted in a decrease in the magnetic anisotropy field. In contrast, Fe substitution increased the Curie temperature and the saturation moment without any accompanying damage to the original anisotropy field.

The results showed that Al substitution caused a considerable decrease in the in the Curie temperature, the Co-sublattice moment and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the R sublattice. Abstract

The high field magnetic characteristics of GdCo4B were investigated. The results showed that the Curie temperature was 517 K while the compensation point was 421 K. The average Co-moment was 1.04 micrometers, giving an indication that the 6i-Co only has about a half of that of the 2c-site Co. In addition, the exchange parameter between Gd and Co spins was estimated to be 8.5 K from the temperature dependence of Gd-sublattice magnetization.

Abstract

The characteristics of Rn+1Co3n+5B2n systems were investigated using magnetic measurements. The results showed that Sm- and Dy-atomic moments were smaller than the free ion moments in the Dy system. The magnetic anisotropy of the Dy system was planar at all temperatures below the Curie temperature. Magnetic anisotropy constants K1(Co) and K2(Co) have been determined at various temperatures for the Y system and the Sm-sublattice anisotropy constants had a maximum at n=1.

Samples of [Gd.sub.5-x][Dy.sub.x][Si.sub.4] (x=0, 0.5, 1, and 2 were prepared and the magnetocaloric effects together with the magnetic properties were measured in a magnetic filed up to about 2 T. It is observed that the Dy-substituted samples, which have a lower Curie temperature than that [Gd.sub.5-x][Dy.sub.x][Si.sub.4] show almost the same magnetocaloric effect as that of [Gd.sub.5-x][Dy.sub.x][Si.sub.4].

Abstract

A new solution to the continuous-time bilinear quadratic regulator optimal control problem (CBQR) was recently developed using Krotov’s Method. This paper provides two theoretical results related to the properties of that solution. The first discusses the equivalent representation of the cost-to-go performance index. The second one breaks down this equivalence into smaller identities referencing the components of the performance index. The paper shows how these results can be used to verify the numerical accuracy of the computed solution. Additionally, the meaning of the improving function and the equivalent representation, which are the main elements in the discussed CBQR’s solution, are explained according to the derived notions. A numerical example of structural control application exemplifies the significance of these results and how they can be applied to a specific CBQR problem.

Abstract

Fingerprint analysis has long been a cornerstone in criminal investigations for suspect identification. Beyond this conventional role, recent efforts have aimed to extract additional demographic information from fingerprints, such as gender, age, and nationality. While studies have demonstrated promising accuracy in gender classification based on fingerprints, practical implementation faces challenges, including the often low quality of crime scene fingerprints. This study presents a pioneering comparison of gender classification across diverse datasets, considering variations in fingerprint image quality. We examine the results from four databases, encompassing both public and private sources, employing state-of-the-art Data-Centric AI (DCAI) approaches for enhanced classification. Our findings reveal that a conservative Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)—specifically VGG—proves effective, achieving an accuracy ranging from 70% to 95% based on fingerprint quality. DCAI methods contribute a noteworthy 1–4% improvement. Notably, for partial or low-quality fingerprints, the periphery emerges as a critical determinant of gender classification. This study contributes insights into practical gender classification from fingerprints, emphasizing the significance of the fingerprint periphery. Furthermore, we provide the source code for future research and accessibility in real-world applications.

Abstract Magnetoelectric materials hold untapped potential to revolutionize biomedical technologies. Sensing of biophysical processes in the brain is a particularly attractive application, with the prospect of using magnetoelectric nanoparticles (MENPs) as injectable agents for rapid brain-wide modulation and recording. Recent studies have demonstrated wireless brain stimulation in vivo using MENPs synthesized from cobalt ferrite (CFO) cores coated with piezoelectric barium titanate (BTO) shells. CFO–BTO core–shell MENPs have a relatively high magnetoelectric coefficient and have been proposed for direct magnetic particle imaging (MPI) of brain electrophysiology. However, the feasibility of acquiring such readouts has not been demonstrated or methodically quantified. Here we present the results of implementing a strain-based finite element magnetoelectric model of CFO–BTO core–shell MENPs and apply the model to quantify magnetization in response to neural electric fields. We use the model to determine optimal MENPs-mediated electrophysiological readouts both at the single neuron level and for MENPs diffusing in bulk neural tissue for in vivo scenarios. Our results lay the groundwork for MENP recording of electrophysiological signals and provide a broad analytical infrastructure to validate MENPs for biomedical applications.

Abstract

The concept of cyberdelics emerged in the 1980s and 1990s as an umbrella term denoting the nexus connecting cybernetic (digital) technologies and psychedelic (mind manifesting) drugs. Cyberdelic technologies, in particular the then newly emerging field of virtual reality, were touted by psychedelic cultural icons including Timothy Leary and Terence McKenna as auguring a new era of digital mind-expansion where psychedelic experiences will be recreated online inside virtual worlds. Cyberdelic culture waned in the 2000s. However, recent years have seen the return of the cyberdelic imaginary, following on the heels of a psychedelic resurgence and a renewed interest in virtual reality technologies and their use in therapy. Cyberdelic advocates speak of the necessity of creating transformative technologies that steer humanity away from mindless consumerism and distractedness, and towards expanded states of awe, presence, and transcendence. Nevertheless, much like psychedelics, cyberdelic technologies are seen as running against the grain of current sociocultural arrangements and economic models which threaten to quell their transformative potential. Research on psychedelics within the humanities over the past decade has emphasized the role of cultural set and setting: the significance of the cultural embeddedness of these psychoactive agents and the dependence of their effects on surrounding sociocultural conditions. Building on the notion of information technologies as mind-manifesting technologies, this paper sets out to consider what psychedelics can teach us about cyberdelics: how the principles of set and setting and current discussions within the psychedelic humanities can inform our understanding of the resurgence of interest in cyberdelic media, its prospects, and challenges.

Electronic structures of Cen+1Co3n+5B2n compounds with n=0, 1, 2, and ∞ have been calculated and the magnetic moments of Co and Ce atoms at the respective crystallographic sites have been determined. General features of local density of states for Co atoms in Cen+1Co3n+5B2n are found to be similar to those in Yn+1Co3n+5B2n. It is found that magnetic moments of Ce atoms are not negligible and in opposite direction to the Co-sublattice magnetization in Cen+1Co3n+5B2n with n=0, 1, and 2. The CeCo3B2 compound is found to be nonmagnetic. Calculated magnetic moments in Ce3Co11B4 are in fairly good agreement with neutron diffraction data. Abstract

The compound Gd5Si4 is known as a candidate for magnetic refrigerant in the vicinity of room temperature. Since Dy ion has a smaller de Gennes factor and larger angular momentum than those of Gd ion, it is expected that the Curie temperature of 335 K and magnetocaloric effect for Gd5Si4 will be decreased and increased, respectively, by Dy substitution for Gd of Gd5Si4. In this study, Gd5-xDyxSi4 with x=0, 0.5, 1, and 2 have been prepared, and the magnetocaloric effects together with the magnetic properties have been measured in a magnetic field up to about 2 T. Maximum temperature rise of 3.1 K is obtained for Gd5Si4 at the Curie temperature of 335 K and in a magnetic field of 1.92 T. The Dy-substituted samples, which have a lower Curie temperature than that of Gd5Si4, have shown almost the same magnetocaloric effect as that of Gd5Si4. Magnetic properties of Ce2(Co1-xNix)7B3 compounds with x⩽0.3 have been studied in the temperature region from 4.2 K to 750 K. It is proposed on the basis of experimental data that the compound Ce2Co7B3 has an antiferromagnetic order where the nearest two ferromagnetic layers separated by 12.9 Å couple very weakly antiferromagnetically. Observed metamagnetic transition in Ce2Co7B3 compound is caused by the spin flip. In the compounds Ce2(Co1-xNix)7B3, Ni atoms substitute preferentially the 2c-site Co atoms, and all atoms in the crystals except for the 2c-site Co atoms [=Co(0) atoms] seem to be nonmagnetic.
