Abstract

The energy level alignment at organic/inorganic (o/i) semiconductor interfaces is crucial for any light-emitting or -harvesting functionality. Essential is the access to both occupied and unoccupied electronic states directly at the interface, which is often deeply buried underneath thick organic films and challenging to characterize. We use several complementary experimental techniques to determine the electronic structure of p-quinquephenyl pyridine (5P-Py) adsorbed on ZnO(10-10). The parent anchoring group, pyridine, significantly lowers the work function by up to 2.9 eV and causes an occupied in-gap state (IGS) directly below the Fermi level $E_\text{F}$. Adsorption of upright-standing 5P-Py also leads to a strong work function reduction of up to 2.1 eV and to a similar IGS. The latter is then used as an initial state for the transient population of three normally unoccupied molecular levels through optical excitation and, due to its localization right at the o/i interface, provides interfacial sensitivity, even for thick 5P-Py films. We observe two final states above the vacuum level and one bound state at around 2 eV above $E_\text{F}$, which we attribute to the 5P-Py LUMO. By the separate study of anchoring group and organic dye combined with the exploitation of the occupied IGS for selective interfacial photoexcitation this work provides a new pathway for characterizing the electronic structure at buried o/i interfaces.

This paper investigates the incompressible limit of a system modelling the growth of two cells population. The model describes the dynamics of cell densities, driven by pressure exclusion and cell proliferation. It has been shown that solutions to this system of partial differential equations have the segregation property, meaning that two population initially segregated remain segregated. Abstract

The US and Mexico share a common history in many areas, including language and culture. They face ecological changes due to the increased frequency and severity of droughts and rising energy demands; trends that entail economic costs for both nations and major implications for human wellbeing. We describe an ongoing effort by the Environment Working Group (EWG), created by The University of California's UC-Mexico initiative in 2015, to promote binational research, teaching, and outreach collaborations on the implications of climate change for Mexico and California. We synthesize current knowledge about the most pressing issues related to climate change in the US-Mexico border region and provide examples of cross-border discoveries and research initiatives, highlighting the need to move forward in six broad rubrics. This and similar binational cooperation efforts can lead to improved living standards, generate a collaborative mindset among participating universities, and create an international network to address urgent sustainability challenges affecting both countries.

Abstract

The design, fabrication, and characterization of optically switchable organic light-emitting diodes (OSOLEDs) based on the combination of the commercially available light-emitting polymer poly(9,9′-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole), F8BT, doped with a diarylethene derivative is reported. The photochromic activity of the dopant in the solid state has been investigated both via UV/vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, whereas the morphology of different blends is investigated via atomic force microscopy. OSOLEDs embedding dopant loadings of 1, 5, and 10 wt% exhibit optical responsivity with a maximum reversible optical threshold voltage shift of 4 V. The best performing devices containing 5 wt% dopant show a maximum current density and luminance ON/OFF ratio of ≈20 and ≈90, respectively. For the first time, the impact of the diarylethene isomerization on hole and electron transport has been decoupled and directly investigated, via the design, fabrication, and characterization of single-carrier switchable devices based on the same blends. Not only do these results confirm the photo-responsive trapping activity of the diarylethenes on both charge carriers, but they also demonstrate its asymmetry, with a predominant effect on electron transport that is over 3.4 times larger as compared to hole transport.

Dazugehörige Infoboxen befassen sich mit einem Beispiel aus der Feuchtbodenarchäologie und mit dem wichtigen Thema der langfristigen Probenarchivierung. Der Abschnitt Fernerkundung führt in die Geschichte und in die aktuelle Praxis der Methodik ein und befasstsich mit dem Potenzial von Luftbildern und räumlichen Satellitendaten. Das in einem weiteren Abschnitt vorgestellte Konzept der „Digitalen Geoarchäologie“ bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen Archäologie, Geo- und Computerwissenschaften.
