For the past 20 years, Global Navigation Satellite System reflectometry (GNSS-R) technology has successfully shown its potential for remote sensing of the Earth's surface, including ocean and land surfaces. It is a multistatic radar that uses the GNSS signals reflected from the Earth's surface to extract land and ocean characteristics. Because of its numerous advantages such as low cost, multiple signal sources, and all-day/weather and high-spatiotemporal-resolution observations, this new technology has attracted the attention of many researchers. One of its most promising applications is GNSS-R ocean altimetry, which can complement existing techniques such as tide gauging and radar satellite altimetry. Since this technology for ocean altimetry was first proposed in 1993, increasing progress has been made including diverse methods for processing reflected signals (such as GNSS interferometric reflectometry, conventional GNSS-R, and interferometric GNSS-R), different instruments (such as an RHCP antenna with one geodetic receiver, a linearly polarized antenna, and a system of simultaneously used RHCP and LHCP antennas with a dedicated receiver), and different platform applications (such as ground-based, air-borne, or space-borne). The development of multi-mode and multi-frequency GNSS, especially for constructing the Chinese BeiDou Global Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3), has enabled more free signals to be used to further promote GNSS-R applications. The GNSS has evolved from its initial use of GPS L1 and L2 signals to include other GNSS bands and multi-GNSS signals. Using more advanced, multi-frequency, and multi-mode signals will bring new opportunities to develop GNSS-R technology. In this paper, studies of GNSS-R altimetry are reviewed from four perspectives: (1) classifications according to different data processing methods, (2) different platforms, (3) development of different receivers, and (4) our work. We overview the current status of GNSS-R altimetry and describe its fundamental principles, experiments, recent applications to ocean altimetry, and future directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents a generalised characterisation of the surface circulation over the northern shelf of the Gulf of Cadiz, based on 4 years of high-resolution satellite altimetry data from Sentinel-3A and wind model data. The altimetry-based surface zonal currents, adjusted for bottom-drag and wind effects, are compared with a generic CMEMS product and validated against in-situ ADCP measurements. The proposed altimetry product demonstrates superior performance than the CMEMS product, accurately reflecting surface circulation direction compared to in-situ measurements (r = 0.77, RMSE = 0.10 m/s, bias = 0.01 m/s). The use of the bottom-drag and wind-corrected/uncorrected altimetry product for spatiotemporal analysis of the shelf circulation revealed the distinct contributions of wind-driven and geostrophic components in different basin sectors. The results show that over the western basin, positive (eastward) surface currents were predominantly driven by westerly winds, while only occasionally, westward flows coincided with easterly winds, suggesting a higher control of the geostrophic component over the westward flows. In contrast, over the eastern basin, both eastward and westward flows were found to be primarily driven by favourable winds. Additionally, the analysis of Absolute Dynamic Topography (ADT) values along the whole basin showed the presence of ADT gradients both along-shore and cross-shore over the shelf, contributing to geostrophic flows. Finally, the seasonal analysis showed that eastward circulation tends to dominate during the spring and summer months, related to the upwelling season in the Gulf of Cadiz and associated westerly winds. Westward flows prevail during the winter months, related to easterly winds and the rebalancing of the along-shore sea level gradient during relaxed upwelling conditions. The findings demonstrate a significant improvement in the use of satellite altimetry data to study complex oceanographic dynamics in coastal areas, where both spatial and temporal variability are high. Moreover, the similarity of our results to those obtained from in-situ systems supports the use of altimetry data and publicly available wind models to support oceanographic studies in remote or resource-limited areas. The coastal ocean off western Patagonia is one of the main coastal regions with high freshwater inputs from rivers, rain, and glaciers in the Southern Hemisphere. This study conducts an analysis of the seasonal and interannual variations in sea surface salinity and meridional geostrophic transports, specifically focusing on the Cape Horn Current, using improved satellite-derived data of sea surface salinity (SSS) and geostrophic velocities spanning an ∼11-year period (September 2011–August 2022). Our results reveal a clear salinity minimum in a coastal band between 42–54°S associated with the highest freshwater content. The average geostrophic currents are stronger south of 49°S, in line with the location of the Cape Horn Current. The average salinity minimum tends to disappear south of 54°S, with salinity values increasing slightly southward. The seasonal cycle of salinity shows the most pronounced minimum in summer (∼33.2–33.4). The greatest variability in salinity (standard deviation of salinity fields) occurs in the southern region of the Cape Horn Current. Hovmöller plots reveal two cores of minimum salinity observed in spring and summer (∼33.3–33.4). The freshwater off the Gulf of Penas contributes to the northern core. The meridional geostrophic transport differs between the northern and southern sections, with transports predominantly towards the Equator (Pole) north (south) of about 47–48°S during spring–summer. There is a marked seasonal variability in the magnitude and northern limit of the southward-flowing Cape Horn Current, being extended further north during winter and with a maximum average magnitude during summer–fall (about − 2 × 10 4 m2 s−1). On the interannual scale, a major drop in surface salinity occurred off northern and central Patagonia during 2018–2019. Finally, a potential long-term freshening trend is observed in the coastal area off southern Patagonia (south of 52°S), although prolonged data records are essential to confirm this pattern. The ocean regulates the Earth's climate by transporting heat from the equator to the poles. Here, we use satellite‐based sea surface observations of air‐sea heat fluxes and eddy detection to investigate the mesoscale heat transport. "Mesoscale" refers to both the Eulerian perspective as the spatio‐temporal scales of ∼100 km and ∼1 month, as well as the Lagrangian aspect as isolated vortices identified from the dynamic topography. Paradoxically, there are a considerable number of mesoscale eddies inconsistent between their surface thermal and dynamic signals, that is, cold‐core anticyclones and warm‐core cyclones are globally prevalent. On account of such inconsistency, we show that the mesoscale meridional heat transport carried by geostrophic components is 10 times larger than (and opposite in direction to) that of the wind‐driven Ekman components. An offset between SSH‐SST coherent and incoherent eddies in the Ekman heat transport is apparent, whereas the geostrophic heat transport is contained within coherent eddies. Plain Language Summary: Rotating water masses in the ocean, termed as mesoscale eddies, are dynamically important features because they can transport nutrients and displace heat in the Earth's climate system. In the same manner as the atmospheric weather systems that are associated with high or low pressures, mesoscale eddies are accompanied by sea level anomalies and therefore can be observed by satellite images. Conventionally, anticyclonic eddies detected as clockwise vortices in the Northern Hemisphere display warm temperature anomalies at the center. However, recent studies have found that the sea surface temperature signal of an eddy might be uncertain and even contradictory to their dynamical circulation patterns. In this study, we combine sea surface observations of temperature and velocity fields to determine the patterns of global ocean heat transport associated with mesoscale eddies. We present a study on the ocean surface currents reconstruction by merging Level-4 (L4, gap-free) altimeter-derived geostrophic currents and satellite sea surface temperature. Building upon past studies on the multi-variate reconstruction of geostrophic currents from satellite observations, we regionalized and optimized an algorithm to improve the altimeter-derived surface circulation estimates in the North Atlantic Ocean. A ten-year-long time series (2010–2019) is presented and validated by means of in situ observations. The newly optimized algorithm allowed us to improve the currents estimate along the main axis of the Gulf Stream and in correspondence of well-known upwelling areas in the North Eastern Atlantic, with percentage improvements of around 15% compared to standard operational altimetry products. Satellite observation of sea surface height (SSH) may soon have sufficient accuracy and resolution to map geostrophic currents in Lake Superior. A dynamic atmosphere correction will be needed to remove SSH variance due to basinwide seiching. Here, the dynamics of rotating barotropic gravity modes are examined using numerical models and lake-level gauges. Gravity modes explain 94% of SSH variance in a general circulation model and evolve as forced, damped oscillators. These modes have significant SSH, but negligible kinetic energy (2 J m−2) and dissipation rates (0.01 mW m−2) relative to other motions in Lake Superior. Removing gravity modes from instantaneous SSH allows geostrophic currents to be accurately computed. Complex empirical orthogonal functions (CEOFs) from 50 years of data at eight lake-level gauges show patterns consistent with the first two gravity modes. The frequency spectra of these CEOFs are consistent with forced, damped oscillators with natural frequencies of 3.05 and 4.91 cycles per day (cpd) and decay time scales of 4.5 and 1.0 days. Modal amplitudes from the general circulation model and lake-level gauges are 80% coherent at 1 cpd, but only 50% coherent at 3 cpd, indicating that the atmospheric reanalysis used to force the general circulation model is not accurate at the high natural frequencies of the gravity modes. The results indicate that a dynamic atmosphere correction should combine modeled gravity modes below 1 cpd and observed mode-1 and mode-2 amplitudes (from lake-level gauges) at higher frequencies. The interannual variability of sea surface temperature (SST) in the South China Sea (SCS) exhibits two warming peaks around January and August in the subsequent year of El Niño. Results show that the second basin-scale SST warming peak is only evident following strong El Niño events, not regular events, which can be well identified by the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) method. The heat budget analysis reveals that the anomalous Ekman heat advection (Eka) and geostrophic heat advection (Goa) contribute to the second warming feature, associated with the local dynamic response in the SCS, such as wind-driven Ekman downwelling, weakened Vietnam coastal upwelling, and abnormal anticyclonic geostrophic currents. The abnormal Eka and Goa are further attributed to the advanced abnormal equatorial easterlies breakout in the western Pacific, coinciding with the development of the western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone (WNPAC) in response to strong El Niño. This suggests that the second warming feature of the SCS SST is the footprint of strong El Niño events via the establishment of the WNPAC, which is tightly related to Indo-Pacific remote processes. The subpolar North Atlantic is known to have rich mesoscale and submesoscale variations; however, their spectral characteristics have not been documented in observations. This study documents the kinetic energy (KE) spectra using acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements that cover both the Iceland Basin and the Irminger Sea. The KE spectrum is partitioned into geostrophically balanced motions and unbalanced motions. The results reveal that balanced motions dominate the KE spectra. The unbalanced motions enhance in spring and fall to flatten the spectra and dominate small-scale (<50 km) energy, though uncertainty is high due to measurement noise and method assumptions. In addition, the dynamical framework that drives the balanced motions undergoes distinct seasonal shifts. In the spring and summer seasons of the Iceland Basin, as well as the summer season of the Irminger Sea, the wavenumber spectra of balanced motions exhibit a slope of approximately −3, consistent with the internal quasigeostrophic turbulence theory. Conversely, in the fall season of the Iceland Basin and the spring and fall seasons of the Irminger Sea, the wavenumber spectra of geostrophic balanced motions have a slope close to −2, consistent with surface quasigeostrophic turbulence theory. Additionally, we have found that the intensity of mesoscale eddies in the spring season can modulate both the slope and intensity of the wavenumber spectra of geostrophic balanced flows. An analysis of water exchange between the Bering (Pacific Ocean) and Chukchi (Arctic Ocean) seas in the summer was carried out using satellite data on sea level, geostrophic currents, and measurement data of water transport in the Bering Strait. It is shown that there is good agreement (r = 0.85, July–October 1997−2019) between the velocities of geostrophic currents (satellite data) and measurements of water transport (buoy station data) through the Bering Strait. It has been established that the temporal variability of water transport through the Bering Strait is determined by sea level variations in the southern part of the Chukchi Sea (66°–68° N, 170°–172° W). Strengthening of the eastern (western) winds is accompanied by a decrease (increase) in the sea level in the southern part of the Chukchi Sea and, as a result, an increase (decrease) in the flow of water through the Bering Strait. An increase (decrease) in the flow of the Yukon River is accompanied by a rise (decrease) in sea level and changes in water circulation in the northern Bering Sea and the southern Chukchi Sea. The spatial distribution and seasonal variability of mesoscale eddies in the Sea of Japan have been investigated based on the regional database created from the AVISO Mesoscale Eddies Trajectory Atlas (1993–2020). The database contains information about the trajectories and parameters of mesoscale eddies in the Sea of Japan. The eddy detection method is based on the analysis of altimetric maps of absolute dynamic topography. A total of 578 eddies with a lifetime of more than 90 days have been identified (273 anticyclonic and 305 cyclonic). The average lifetime of eddies is 202 days for anticyclonic and 143 days for cyclonic and mean radius of 58 km for anticyclonic and 61 km for cyclonic. The mean speed of anticyclones and cyclones along their trajectories is 2.8 and 3.7 cm/s; the mean orbital velocities of geostrophic currents are 19.0 and 15.1 cm/s, respectively. The maximum number of cases of formation and destruction of anticyclones falls in July–September during the period with high values of water inflow through the Korea Strait. Most of the cyclonic eddies are generated between January and June and decay during the cold half of the year (October–March). A joint analysis of maps of the mean surface circulation in the Sea of Japan (satellite altimetry data) and the spatial distribution of mesoscale eddy shows that the stable eddies of the Sea of Japan are associated with the quasi-stationary meanders of the East Korea East Korea Warm Curent, Subpolar Front, and Tsushima current. I review the history of ideas that have led to the establishment of the RAPID monitoring system for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) at 26.5° N. This history is closely connected to important events in my personal career. Starting from early and largely unsuccessful attempts at formulating a dynamically consistent force balance for the AMOC, I made theoretical progress by separately predicting the density at the eastern and western boundaries and by invoking exact geostrophic balance throughout, including the western boundary current. A remarkable confluence of individuals and ideas then enabled the establishment of the RAPID array, at its core based on monitoring boundary densities and on geostrophy. The RAPID results, such as the surprisingly large sub-seasonal variability, have encouraged AMOC monitoring approaches at other latitudes. I finish by pointing at two theoretical concepts—first, acknowledging the difference between convective mixing and sinking and, second, considering the advective rather than wave propagation of density perturbations in the deep western boundary current—that, together with continued observations and newly available global coupled simulations at very high resolution, should substantially improve our understanding of the causes of AMOC variability. For the period of satellite altimetry observation 1993–2018, a comparison was made of estimates of the linear meridional shifts of the jet structure and variations in current intensity in the sector of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) south of Africa (10° E–25° W), obtained on the basis of the parameters derived from the module of the absolute dynamic topography (ADT) gradient : directly , module of the velocity of geostrophic current |u| on the ocean surface, half of square of the ADT gradient , and specific kinetic energy . The analysis was carried out by a method developed earlier and refined in this paper using linear regression analysis. It is shown that qualitatively the characters of the meridional shifts (displacement of the curves of these parameters averaged over latitude and for each year) in latitude and the corresponding current intensity variations (i.e., variations in the parameters themselves) over 26-year observations, when calculated through each of the four parameters, turned out to be similar. The same similarity was obtained from the calculations with respect to the ADT scale. Meanwhile, the quantitative differences between calculations for different pairs of parameters can be significant even in the and pair. In quantitative terms, the absolute values of shifts of the jet structure and variations in the intensity of currents in the ACC band in the studied sector of the Southern Ocean generally increase from those linearly dependent on the ADT gradient module to quadratically dependent ones. The offshore transport of Greenland coastal waters influenced by freshwater input from ice sheet melting during summer plays an important role in ocean circulation and biological processes in the Labrador Sea. Many previous studies over the last decade have investigated shelfbreak transport processes in the region, primarily using ocean model simulations. Here, we use 27 years of surface geostrophic velocity observations from satellite altimetry, modified to include Ekman dynamics based on atmospheric reanalysis, and virtual particle releases to investigate seasonal and interannual variability in transport of coastal water in the Labrador Sea. Two sets of tracking experiments were pursued, one using geostrophic velocities only, and another using total velocities including the wind effect. Our analysis revealed substantial seasonal variability, even when only geostrophic velocities were considered. Water from coastal southwest Greenland is generally transported northward into Baffin Bay, although westward transport off the west Greenland shelf increases in fall and winter due to winds. Westward offshore transport is increased for water from southeast Greenland so that, in some years, water originating near the east Greenland coast during summer can be transported into the central Labrador Sea and the convection region. When wind forcing is considered, long-term trends suggest decreasing transport of Greenland coastal water during the melting season toward Baffin Bay, and increasing transport into the interior of the Labrador Sea for water originating from southeast Greenland during summer, where it could potentially influence water column stability. Future studies using higher-resolution velocity observations are needed to capture the role of submesoscale variability in transport pathways in the Labrador Sea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The characteristics of cold core eddies and their effects on the hydrodynamics and biological production in the Andaman seas were studied using in-situ and satellite observations. The existence and spatial extent of the eddy are revealed by the precise structure and patterns of the temperature-salinity (T–S) profiles, nutrients, and chl a. A good illustration of this is the anomaly in sea surface height (SSHA). The Cyclonic Eddies (CE1 and CE2) are monitored using the Okubo-Weiss parameter (− 2 × 10–11/s2) calculated from the satellite SSHA and a geostrophic current centered at 8°N and 92°E and 13°N and 93°E, respectively. At the eastern flank of CE1, measurements are taken in-situ along 8°N and 92.5°–93.5°E. Vertical currents measured with Acoustic Doppler Current Profiles (ADCP) at 0.3 m/s show northward flow along the track. A significant northward flow (0.3 m/s) can be seen in the vertical currents recorded with ADCP, yet a weak southern flow can be seen over the western margin. In addition, the SSHA acquired from altimetry demonstrates the spatial extent, supporting the occurrence of cyclonic eddies. The vertical shear in the horizontal flow is the main contributor to baroclinic instability (Ri 0.0001) in the water column, according to an analysis of the factors that could result in the formation of an eddy. The T–S profiles show that the area contains Bay of Bengal (BoB) water, and there are semi-annual Rossby waves there as well. However, the wind stress curl did not provide a reliable indication of divergence in the region. The region's biological production (chl a) and nutrient distribution (NO2, NO3, PO4, and SiO4) were impacted by the eddy. CE2 is connected to convective mixing processes that take place along the northwest coast of the Andaman Islands as a result of the primarily cold, dry continental air flowing from the north east. Surface currents in oceanic environment are of vital importance from economical, biological and environmental aspects. Modelling ocean currents has generally been performed using numerical ocean circulation models as a solution to initial-boundary value problems in oceanic domain. Due to lack of knowledge about model parameters as well as initial and boundary values, they need to be externally calibrated for accurate local and regional applications. In this study, an alternative approach is proposed to incorporate spaceborne geodetic observations as well as hydrographic data to estimate the total surface current in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea. Being the data-driven approach, the method is comparable to numerical ocean models and regionally it is more accurate and simpler in application. The proposed method focuses on the computation of dynamic topography (DT) by least squares variance component estimation combining two different schemes. They are (1) DT estimation via direct observations of sea surface height from satellite altimetry and (2) steric and non-steric modeling of sea level anomaly using temperature and salinity data for the steric component; and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment observations for the non-steric component. Ultimately, the total surface current is obtained by computing the horizontal gradient of DT using geostrophic equation and adding the components of the Ekman current. Moreover, the estimated total surface current is further improved by assimilating with in situ current meter data using 3D-Variational data assimilation method and it is validated against two control stations. This assimilation leads to improvement of about 3 to 15 cm/s in total surface current computed using geostrophic equation and Ekman current. Besides, to illustrate the significance of the proposed approach, the estimated total surface current is externally validated and compared with the output of Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), as a numerical ocean model developed for oceanographic applications. Our comparison reveals that the proposed method is more accurate and reliable than CMEMS products. As for the circulation and current pattern, the estimated surface velocities reveal the existence of eddies in the region of the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea, indicating the occurrence of cyclonic and anti-cyclonic circulations. Among the global mapping of lee wave generation, a missing piece exists in the northwestern Pacific Ocean (NPO), which features complex topographies and energetic circulations. This study applies Bell's theory to estimate and map internal lee waves generated by geostrophic flows in the NPO using Mercator Ocean reanalysis data and the full topographic spectra obtained from the latest synthetic bathymetry product. Unlike the dominant contributions from abyssal hills in the Southern Ocean, multiple topographies, including ridges, rises, and continental margins, result in an inhomogeneous lee wave generation with multiple hotspots in the NPO. The generation rate is generally higher in the Philippine basin and lower in the central Pacific seamounts. Over ridges, the rough topography creates a high potential for triggering lee waves. Over rises and continental margins, the stronger currents at the shallow depths are favorable for lee wave generation. In the Kuroshio extension region, the rough topography and strong currents cause the strongest lee wave generation, with an energy flux reaching 100 mW m−2. By mean–eddy decomposition, it is found that the lee wave hotspots contributed by mean flow are concentrated in specific regions, while those by geostrophic eddies are widely distributed. Geostrophic eddies are the primary contributor to lee wave generation, which account for 74.6% of the total energy transferred from geostrophic flow to lee waves. This study also reveals that tides suppress the lee wave generation by 14%, and geostrophic flow can cause an asymmetric generation of internal tides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The East Kamchatka and East Sakhalin Currents (EKC and ESC) are the western boundary currents of the subarctic North Pacific and Okhotsk Sea. Variability in the EKC and ESC velocities could exert a substantial effect on ecosystems and fish stocks in the southwestern Bering Sea and Okhotsk Sea. Using satellite-derived data (sea surface heights, geostrophic current velocities, and sea surface temperatures, 2002–2020), we demonstrate that changes in zonal wind generate sea level variations on the shelf in the southwestern Bering Sea over a period of 18–29 days and with an amplitude of 5–20 cm. The ebb/flood events on the shelf lead to changes in the velocity, direction, and position of the EKC. The sea level anomalies propagate along the western Kamchatka, northern Kuril Islands and the northern and western Okhotsk Sea and result in the variability of geostrophic current velocities in the ESC zone. The strengthening (weakening) of ESC leads to an increase (a decrease) in SST in the southern part of the Okhotsk Sea by 1–3 °C. In the northwestern Okhotsk Sea, in addition to wind-induced variability, there are temporary changes in the geostrophic currents with a period of 14 days caused by fortnightly tides. This paper reviews the recent progress in our estimation of ocean dynamic topography and the derived surface geostrophic currents, mainly based on multiple nadir radar altimeter missions. These altimetric observations provide the cornerstone of our ocean circulation observing system from space. The largest signal in sea surface topography is from the mean surface dominated by the marine geoid, and we will discuss recent progress in observing the mean ocean circulation from altimetry, once the geoid and other corrections have been estimated and removed. We then address the recent advances in our observations of the large-scale and mesoscale ocean circulation from space, and the particular challenges and opportunities for new observations in the polar regions. The active research in the ocean barotropic tides and internal tidal circulation is also presented. The paper also addresses how our networks of global multi-satellite and in situ observations are being combined and assimilated to characterize the four-dimensional ocean circulation, for climate research and ocean forecasting systems. For the future of ocean circulation from space, the need for continuity of our current observing system is crucial, and we discuss the exciting enhancement to come with global wide-swath altimetry, the extension into the coastal and high-latitude regions, and proposals for direct total surface current satellites in the 2030 period. Mesoscale eddies play a crucial role in the transport of mass, heat, salt and nutrients, exerting significant influence on ocean circulation patterns, biogeochemical processes and the global climate system. Based on Lagrangian-Averaged Vorticity Deviation (LAVD) method, this study applies 27 years (1993–2019) of geostrophic current velocity data to detect Rotationally Coherent Lagrangian Vortices (RCLVs) in the Northwest Pacific (NWP; 10°N–30°N, 115°E–155°E), with the spatiotemporal characteristics of Eulerian Sea Surface Height Eddies (SSH eddies) and RCLVs being compared. A higher number of SSH eddies and RCLVs can be observed in spring and winter, and their inter-annual variations are similar. SSH eddies show higher generation number and larger radius in the Subtropical Countercurrent region, while RCLVs occur more favorably in the ocean basin. The propagation speed distributions of both eddy types are nearly identical and decrease with increasing latitude. Due to the material coherent transport maintained by RCLVs within a finite time interval, the coherent cores of RCLVs are considerably smaller in scale as compared to those of SSH eddies. The average zonal transports induced by SSH eddies and RCLVs are estimated to be −0.82 Sv and −0.51 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3/s), respectively. For non-overlapping SSH eddies with RCLVs, approximately 80% of the water within the eddy leaks out during the eddy's lifespan. In the case of overlapping SSH eddies, the ratio of coherent water inside the eddy decreases with increasing radius, and the leakage rate is around 58%. Finally, an examination of 36 shedding RCLVs events from the Kuroshio near the Luzon Strait, which induce an average zonal transport of −0.14 Sv, reveals that 54% of the water within the shedding RCLVs originates from the Kuroshio. In this study, we present an extension to existing numerical retrackers of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) altimetry signals. To our knowledge at the time of writing this manuscript, it offers the most consistent retrieval of geophysical parameters compared to low-resolution mode (LRM) retracking results. We achieve this by additionally estimating the standard deviation of vertical wave-particle velocities σ v and a new parameter u x , linked to a residual Doppler in the returned radar echoes, which can be related to wind speed and direction. Including this new parameter into the SAR stack retracker mitigates sea surface height estimation errors by up to two centimeters for Sentinel-6MF SAR mode results. Additionally, we found a closed-form equation to describe u x as a function of eastward and northward wind variables, which allows mitigating the effects of this parameter on a SAR stack within level 1B processing and generating a lookup table to correct sea surface height estimates in SAR mode. This additionally opens up the door to estimating the wind speed and direction from SAR altimetry stacks. Additionally, we discuss how this new retracker performs with respect to different planned future baseline processor changes of Sentinel-6MF, namely F09 and F10, by attempting to imitate their level 2 processing. This is achieved by processing cycles 017 to 051 (nearly a full year) of Sentinel-6MF level 1A data on a global scale. We observe that the new retracking method is, on average, more accurate with respect to LRM. However, there is a slight increase in measurement noise due to the introduction of an additional parameter. To ensure that the results of the new retracker are not biased, we retrack using both the new method and the SINCS-OV ZSK retracker on Sentinel-6MF stack data produced in a Monte Carlo simulation. We analyze the simulation results with respect to accuracy, precision, and correlations between estimated parameters. We show that the accuracy of the new retracker is better than SINCS-OV ZSK but less precise, which could be related to higher correlation coefficients—especially with respect to the new parameter u x —between estimated parameters. The East Mediterranean Sea (EMS) circulation has previously been characterized as dominated by gyres, mesoscale eddies, and disjoint boundary currents. We develop nested high-resolution numerical simulations in the EMS to examine the circulation variability with an emphasis on the yet unexplored regional submesoscale currents. Rather than several disjoint currents, a continuous cyclonic boundary current (BC) encircling the Levantine basin is identified in both model solution and altimetry data. This EMS BC advects eddy chains downstream and is identified as a principal source of regional mesoscale and submesoscale current variability. During the seasonal fall to winter mixed layer deepening, energetic submesoscale [O(10) km] eddies, fronts, and filaments emerge throughout the basin, characterized by O(1) Rossby numbers. A submesoscale time scale range of ≈1–5 days is identified using spatiotemporal analysis of the numerical solutions and confirmed through mooring data. The submesoscale kinetic energy (KE) wavenumber (k) spectral slope is found to be k−2, shallower than the quasigeostrophic-like ∼k−3 slope diagnosed in summer. The shallowness of the winter spectral slope is shown to be due to divergent subinertial motions, consistent with the Boyd theoretical model, rather than with the surface quasigeostrophic model. Using a coarse-graining approach, we diagnose a seasonal inverse (forward) KE cascade above (below) 30-km scales due to rotational (divergent) motions and show that these commence after completion of the fall submesoscale energization. We also show that at scales larger than several hundred kilometers, the spectral density becomes near constant and a weak forward cascade occurs, from gyre scales to mesoscales. Although El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and its global impacts through teleconnection have been known for decades, if and how the mean currents and mesoscale eddies in the Caribbean Sea are linked to ENSO remains an open question. Here, by analyzing satellite observations and an ocean reanalysis product, we found a close connection between mean currents, eddies in the Caribbean Sea and ENSO on interannual timescales. Strong El Niño events result in enhanced north‐south sea surface height differences and consequently stronger mean currents in the Caribbean Sea, and the opposite happens during La Niña events. The eddy kinetic energy responds to ENSO via eddy‐mean flow interaction, primarily through baroclinic instability, which releases the available potential energy stored in the mean currents to mesoscale eddies. Our results suggest some predictability of the mean currents and eddies in the Caribbean Sea, particularly during strong El Niño and La Niña events. The influences of sea surface wind on the oceanic mesoscale eddy are complex. By integrating our self-developed surface drifters with satellite observations, we examined the influence of sea surface wind on the distribution of water masses and biomass within the interior of an anticyclonic eddy. Ten drifters were deployed in the northern South China Sea in the spring of 2021. Eventually, six were trapped in an anticyclonic mesoscale eddy for an extended period. Interestingly, the drifters' trajectories were not symmetric around the eddy center, displaying a significant offset of the distance from the wind turns to the southerly wind. Particle tracking experiments demonstrated that this departure could mainly be attributed to wind-driven ageostrophic currents. This is due to the strength of wind-driven ageostrophic currents being more comparable to geostrophic currents when accompanied by a deflection between the directions of the wind-driven current and the eddy's translation. The drifters' derived data indicated that sub-mesoscale ageostrophic currents within the eddy contributed to this asymmetric trajectory, with Ekman and non-Ekman components playing a role. Furthermore, the evolution of ocean color data provided corroborating evidence of these dynamic processes, highlighting the importance of ageostrophic processes within mesoscale eddies. This paper investigates the spatial inhomogeneity of the time-averaged, quasigeostrophic, double-gyre circulation response to fixed, realistic, large-scale modes of wind-stress forcing. While the companion paper of this study focused on understanding the anatomy of low-frequency, midlatitude climate variability in an idealised, eddy-resolving coupled model, this paper looked at understanding the nature of the wind-induced ocean gyre response using an ocean-only configuration of the same model. Our analysis revealed two, time-averaged responses to an east–west dipole, wind-stress curl anomaly in the ocean basin. Firstly, wind-stress anomalies in the western ocean basin led to changes in relative strength of the inertial recirculation zones and jet-axis tilt. This is consistent with an advection-dominated, nonlinear adjustment of the ocean gyres to anomalous forcing. Secondly, wind-stress curl anomalies in the eastern ocean basin was found to induce a largely independent response involving meridional shifts of the western boundary current extension (WBCE). The effects of time-averaged advection in this region are weak and the discovery of westward-propagating Rossby waves along the WBCE revealed the response is more akin to a baroclinic Rossby wave adjustment. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current plays a key role in the circulation of the Southern Ocean and affects redistribution of heat by the ocean on a global scale. The study of the dynamics and structure of this current becomes especially relevant in a changing climate. The current is well manifested based on the satellite altimetry data, which makes it possible to study the variability of its structure in time and space on different scales. The methods for determining the position of individual fronts of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current based on satellite altimetry data becomes most important in solving these tasks. In this paper, we compare different approaches to the detection of fronts. To do this, the structure of the northernmost branch of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the Subantarctic Front, and its spatial and temporal variability have been considered based on the satellite altimetry data from 1993 to 2020 and also on the results of a hydrographic section made onboard the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh across the northern part of the Drake Passage in February 2020. To assess the dynamics of the front, a section of the TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1,2,3 satellite altimeter track from Tierra del Fuego to the south, 350 km long, was selected. Criteria are presented for determining the position of the northern and main branches of the Subantarctic Front based on the satellite altimetry data. A long-term trend of shifting the position of the fronts with respect to the previously accepted levels of absolute dynamic topography has been found. It has been established that the accuracy of determining the position of fronts from fixed values of dynamic topography can decrease in time, in particular, due to the variations in the mean sea level. A statistically significant long-term trend in sea level rise in the region of the Subantarctic Front at a rate of 4 mm/year for the northern branch and 2.5 mm/year for the main branch was found. Ocean bottom pressure-gauge (OBP) records play an essential role in seafloor geodesy. Oceanographic fluctuations in OBP data, however, pose as a significant noise source in seafloor transient crustal deformation observations, including slow slip events (SSEs), making it crucial to evaluate them quantitatively. To extract the significant fluctuation phenomena common to multiple observation networks, including oceanographic fluctuations and tectonic signals, we applied principal component analysis (PCA) to the 3-year Dense Oceanfloor Network System for Earthquakes and Tsunamis (DONET) OBP time series for 40 stations during 2016–2019. PCA could separate several oceanographic signals based on the characteristics of their spatial distributions, although evident transient tectonic signals could not be confirmed from the observed pressure records during this observed period. The spatial distribution of the first four principal components (PCs) reflected the common component, inclined component along sea depth, longitude component, and parabola-like pattern, respectively. By subtracting each PC (in particular, PC-2 and PC-4) from the time series, we could significantly reduce the sea depth dependence of OBP records, which has been highlighted in several previous studies and is also evident in this region. We interpreted PCs 2–4 as the reflection of the strength and meandering of ocean geostrophic currents based on a comparison with the PC spatial distribution of the numerical oceanographic models. In addition, to evaluate the ability of PCA to separate transient tectonic signal from OBP time series, including oceanographic fluctuations, we conducted a synthetic ramp assuming an SSE by rectangular fault and then applied PCA. The assumed synthetic tectonic signal could be separated from the oceanographic signals and included in the principal component independently depending on its amplitude, suggesting that the spatial distribution of each PC would change if the amplitude of the synthetic signal were sufficiently large. We propose a transient event-detection method based on the spatial distribution difference of a specific PC with or without a tectonic signal. We used the normalized inner product (NIP) between these PCs as the indicator of their similarities. Globally available and highly vertical resolved wind fields are crucial for the analysis of atmospheric dynamics for the benefit of climate studies. Most observation techniques have problems to fulfill both requirements. Especially in the tropics and in the southern hemisphere more wind data availability is required. In this study we investigate the potential of radio occultation (RO) data for climate-oriented wind field monitoring in the tropics, with a specific focus on the equatorial area between ±5° latitude. In this region, the geostrophic balance breaks down, due to the Coriolis force term approaching zero. One further aim is to understand how the individual wind components of the geostrophic balance and equatorial balance approximations bridge across the equator and where each component breaks down. We analyze the equatorial balance equation within this latitude band. In a wider range over the tropics, we derive the RO wind fields also using the geostrophic approximation and we compared the RO winds with ERA5 data. From analyzing first the zonal and meridional wind component, we find that the meridional wind component is more volatile in its derivation, however the total wind speed benefits from a computation of both wind components. Investigating next the bias between the RO and ERA5 computed winds, we find that the systematic data bias is smaller than the bias resulting from the approximation itself. As a final aspect we inspected the monthly-mean RO wind data over the full example year 2009. The bias in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere is mainly smaller than ±2ms-1, which is in line with the wind field requirements of the World Meteorological Organization. By decomposing observed El Niño and La Niña events into a strong group and a weak group, respectively, we discovered that the strong La Niña group has its peak center more towards the west compared to the weak La Niña group, whereas the strong El Niño group has its peak center more towards the east compared to the weak El Niño group. The cause of this structure asymmetry is investigated through an ocean mixed-layer heat budget analysis. It was found that the asymmetry is closely linked to the longitudinal distribution of SST anomaly (SSTA) skewness along the equator, and is fundamentally caused by nonlinear dynamic heating, especially nonlinear horizontal temperature advection. It was demonstrated that near the equatorial central Pacific, the anomalous zonal and meridional currents generate negative nonlinear zonal and meridional temperature advection anomalies for both the El Niño and La Niña events, thus favoring a stronger La Niña and a weaker El Niño. Over the eastern Pacific, due to the dominant geostrophic zonal current anomalies and the southward shift of SSTA centers, nonlinear horizontal temperature advection anomalies tend to be positive for both the El Niño and La Niña, thus favoring a stronger growth of El Niño than La Niña. Nonlinear vertical temperature advection anomalies play minor roles in the central Pacific and tend to partially offset the nonlinear horizontal advection effect in the equatorial eastern Pacific. Global long-term stable wind fields are valuable information for climate analyses of atmospheric dynamics. Their monitoring remains a challenging task, given shortcomings of available observations. One promising option for progress is the use of radio occultation (RO) satellite data, based on which the winds are estimated using the geostrophic approximation. Hence, in this study we focus on two goals, explored through European Re-Analysis ERA5 and RO datasets, using monthlymean January and July data over 2007-2020 with a 2.5° × 2.5° resolution. First, we compare actual and geostrophic ERA5 wind speeds to evaluate the validity of the geostrophic approximation. Second, we test how well ERA5 and RO geostrophic winds agree. We find the geostrophic approximation to work well within 2 m s-1 accuracy almost globally (5°-85° latitude), especially over the summer hemisphere; larger differences (more than 5 m s-1) may occur in the winter stratosphere. We noticed the effect of large mountain ranges on the wind flow as a wave-like pattern, also in the difference between RO and ERA5 geostrophic winds, pointing to effects of different geopotential height estimations. Generally, RO and ERA5 geostrophic winds showed very good agreement. In the long-term, systematic differences in decadal trends of higher than 0.5 m s-1 per decade were found at subtropical latitudes, mainly related to observing system changes in the year 2016 that influenced ERA5. Together with the validity of the geostrophic approximation, this indicates that the long-term stability of RO-derived wind field monitoring can provide added value to reanalysis winds, for the benefit of climate monitoring and analyses. We expand on a recent determination of the first global energy spectrum of the ocean's surface geostrophic circulation (Storer et al., 2022, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-022-33031-3) using a coarse‐graining (CG) method. We compare spectra from CG to those from spherical harmonics by treating land in a manner consistent with the boundary conditions. While the two methods yield qualitatively consistent domain‐averaged results, spherical harmonics spectra are too noisy at gyre‐scales (>1,000 km). More importantly, spherical harmonics are inherently global and cannot provide local information connecting scales with currents geographically. CG shows that the extra‐tropics mesoscales (100–500 km) have a root‐mean‐square (rms) velocity of ∼15 cm/s, which increases to ∼30–40 cm/s locally in the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio and to ∼16–28 cm/s in the ACC. There is notable hemispheric asymmetry in mesoscale energy‐per‐area, which is higher in the north due to continental boundaries. We estimate that ≈25%–50% of total geostrophic energy is at scales smaller than 100 km, and is un(der)‐resolved by pre‐SWOT satellite products. Spectra of the time‐mean circulation show that most of its energy (up to 70%) resides in stationary eddies with characteristic scales smaller than (<500 km). This highlights the preponderance of "standing" small‐scale structures in the global ocean due to the temporally coherent forcing by boundaries. By coarse‐graining in space and time, we compute the first spatio‐temporal global spectrum of geostrophic circulation from AVISO and NEMO. These spectra show that every length‐scale evolves over a wide range of time‐scales with a consistent peak at ≈200 km and ≈2–3 weeks. Plain Language Summary: Traditionally, "eddies" are identified as time‐varying features relative to a background time‐mean flow. As such, "mean" does not imply large length‐scale. Standing eddies or meanders due to topography have little time‐variation, but can have significant energy at small length‐scales that are unresolved and need to be parameterized in coarse climate simulations. Similarly, "eddy" or "time‐varying" do not imply small length‐scale, such as large‐scale motions from Rossby waves or fluctuations of the Kuroshio. Another common method is Fourier analysis in "representative" ocean boxes that cannot capture the circulation's planetary scales. We overcome these limitations thanks to recent advances: (a) a method for calculating spectra by coarse‐graining, (b) properly defining convolutions on the sphere, which "blur" oceanic flow in a way that preserves its underlying symmetries, opening the door for global "wavelet" analysis and, more generally, spatial coarse‐graining, and (c) FlowSieve: an efficient parallel code. We employ coarse‐graining in space‐time to gain new insights into the global oceanic circulation, including how much energy resides in its different spatial structures and how they vary in time. It is not fully understood how near-inertial kinetic energy (NIKE) is spatially distributed near Tsushima oceanic front (TOF) as a typhoon travels across the region. Underneath TOF, a year-round mooring covering a major part of water column was implemented in 2019. During summer, three massive typhoons (Krosa, Tapah, and Mitag) consecutively traversed the frontal area and delivered a substantial amount of NIKE into surface mixed layer. According to a mixed-layer slab model, NIKE was widely distributed near the cyclone's track. The mooring observation exhibited the vertical distribution and pathways of surface-generated NIKE in response to the successive typhoon events. According to the modal decomposition, first three modes mostly explain the NIKE's elevations following the typhoon events. According to ray-tracing experiments based on the internal-wave theory, large-scale near-inertial waves (NIWs) rapidly descend to a depth greater than 1000 m, while mesoscale NIWs slowly descend and rarely reached beyond the main pycnocline. Following the passage of Tapah, a profound energy mass was found nearly stationary at shallow depths coincident with vertical shear of geostrophic current. Gridded sea surface height (SSH) maps estimated from satellite altimetry are widely used for estimating surface ocean geostrophic currents. Satellite altimeters observe SSH along one‐dimensional tracks widely spaced in space and time, making accurately reconstructing the two‐dimensional (2D) SSH field challenging. Traditionally, SSH is mapped using optimal interpolation (OI). However, OI artificially smooths the SSH field leading to high mapping errors in regions with rapidly‐evolving mesoscale features such as western boundary currents. Motivated by the dynamical relation between SSH and sea surface temperature (SST) and the notion that even the chaotic evolution of mesoscale ocean turbulence may contain repeating patterns, we outline a deep learning (DL) approach where a neural network is trained to reconstruct 2D SSH by synthesizing altimetry and SST observations. In the Gulf Stream Extension region, dominated by mesoscale variability, our DL method substantially improves the SSH reconstruction compared to existing methods. Our SSH map has 17% lower root‐mean‐square error and resolves spatial scales 30% smaller than OI compared against independent altimeter observations. Surface geostrophic currents calculated from our map are closer to surface drifter observations and appear qualitatively more realistic, with stronger currents, a clearer separation between the Gulf Stream and neighboring eddies, and the appearance of smaller coherent eddies missed by other methods. Our map yields significant re‐estimations of important dynamical quantities such as eddy kinetic energy, vorticity, and strain rate. Applying our DL method to produce a global SSH product may provide a more accurate and higher resolution product for studying mesoscale ocean turbulence. Having an estimate of the two‐dimensional sea surface height field allows one to estimate surface ocean currents, so filling in the gaps between the observations is an important problem. The traditionally‐used method for filling in the gaps between sea surface height observations struggles when there are lots of small‐scale, rapidly‐interacting ocean currents. We developed a deep learning (DL) model to estimate the sea surface height field more accurately. We achieved this by combining the sea surface height observations with satellite observations of sea surface temperature. The relationship between sea surface temperature and height is non‐trivial, but our DL model learned to use information from the sea surface temperature observations in the places where sea surface height wasn't observed to improve the accuracy of the sea surface height estimate. We applied and tested our method in the Gulf Stream and demonstrated that our sea surface height map is more accurate than that from the traditional method. Our method provides a more accurate sea surface height map which could allow us in future to learn new lessons about small‐scale surface currents in the ocean. The ocean circulation dynamics can be represented as a high‐dimensional multi‐scale nonlinear system with inhomogenous meanfields and topography. Numerical simulations of the ocean dynamics resolve the large scales of motion on a computational grid, with the unresolved subgrid interactions parameterized. These simulations are highly dependent upon the grid resolution, unless the subgrid terms are appropriately parameterized. There are five fundamental classes of subgrid interactions: eddy‐eddy; eddy‐topographic; eddy‐meanfield; meanfield‐meanfield; and meanfield‐topographic. Scale dependent parameterizations representing each of these interaction classes are presented here in oceanic flows for the first time. Subgrid parameterizations are calculated and validated in baroclinic quasi‐geostrophic simulations of idealized Antarctic Circumpolar Current flows with representative mean currents and ocean floor topography. The parameterization coefficients are derived from the coarse grained statistics of high resolution reference simulations in spectral space. Stochastic and deterministic parameterizations are developed for the eddy‐eddy interactions, and deterministic forms for the remaining classes. The kinetic energy spectra and meanfield resulting from large eddy simulations (LES) adopting these coefficients accurately replicate those of the reference simulation. The eddy‐eddy interactions are dominant, but all classes need to be parameterized for best results. For LES where baroclinic instability is explicitly resolved the stochastic variants out‐perform the deterministic ones across all scales. When baroclinic instability is not explicitly resolved, the stochastic variants out‐perform the deterministic cases at the large scales, but introduce some distortions at the smallest resolved scales. This study provides an assessment of the relevant strengths of the subgrid interaction classes in an idealized yet representative ocean. There are oscillations on the size of entire ocean basins, through to fine scale centimeter sized turbulence, and everything in between. Global simulations of the ocean typically capture the large scale features on a discrete grid. To ensure these simulations are physically representative, the influence of the missing smaller scales needs to be captured accurately. Here we present a first calculation of parameterizations governing the interactions between the resolved dynamics and the missing small scale eddies, meanfield and topographic features. Reduced resolution simulations incorporating these parameterizations without tuning have statistics in very good agreement with the high resolution simulations from which they were derived. The Kuroshio Current in the North Pacific displays path changes on an interannual‐to‐decadal time scale. In an idealized barotropic quasi‐geostrophic model of the double‐gyre wind‐driven circulation under stochastic wind‐stress forcing, such variability can occur due to transitions between different equilibrium states. The high‐dimensionality of the problem makes it challenging to determine the probability of these transitions under the influence of stochastic noise. Here we present a new method to estimate these transition probabilities, using a Dynamical Orthogonal (DO) field approach. In the DO approach, the solution of the stochastic partial differential equations system is decomposed using a Karhunen–Loève expansion and separate problems arise for the ensemble mean state and the so‐called time‐dependent DO modes. The original method is first reformulated in a matrix approach which has much broader application potential to various (geophysical) problems. Using this matrix‐DO approach, we are able to determine transition probabilities in the double‐gyre problem and to identify transition paths between the different states. This analysis also leads to the understanding which conditions are most favorable for transition. Plain Language Summary: In an idealized wind‐driven double‐gyre circulation model of the midlatitude ocean circulation, a northward displaced jet (jet‐up state) and a southward displaced jet (jet‐down state) exist under the same forcing conditions. Given the essential impact of mixed-layer temperature (MLT) seasonality in Kuroshio–Oyashio Confluence Region (KOCR) on the variations of climate and marine economic species, the present study investigates causes of seasonal MLT anomaly (MLTA) in KOCR under bimodal states of Kuroshio Extension (KE). The results reveal that KE bimodality plays a modulation role in the seasonal variability of MLTA in KOCR. There is an opposite seasonal variation trend of MLTA under different KE states, and the MLTA amplitude in cold season (winter and spring) is larger than that in warm season (summer and autumn). Such behavior is directly induced by different distribution of climatological MLT and wind field in cold and warm seasons, as well as the opposite anomalous velocity of wind and ocean currents nearby KOCR associated with different KE states through changing sensible and latent heat flux, Ekman and geostrophic advection. A high precision and fine resolution reconstruction of sea surface current is beneficial to the exploration of complicated ocean dynamic processes. Existing studies mainly use satellite sea level and wind stress fields to derive sea surface geostrophic and Ekman currents, and build physical inversion models for global or regional oceans. Despite the obvious success, there are a variety of typical dynamic processes in the ocean such as mesoscale eddies and small-scale waves, and any product of surface current that neglects the contribution of wave motion would be, at best, incomplete. In this context, we present a precise sea surface current product at 15 m depth named GEST (Geostrophic-Ekman-Stokes-Tide) by analyzing the coupling relationship between ocean surface components that correspond to different physical processes and the actual currents as observed by drifting buoys. The GEST was generated based on Ekman, geostrophic currents, and waved-induced Stokes drift and TPXO9 tidal currents. Specifically, in the calculation of Ekman currents, local applicability is taken into account to ensure that the friction layer of wind-driven current can reach where drifters could operate as normal. A comparison proves that combining multi-scale theory and the condition of local applicability improves estimation results by up to 3.6 cm/s compared with OSCAR product, and 0.3 cm/s with GlobCurrent. Furthermore, by comparing the reconstructed products with 1° and 0.25° resolution, we find that the higher resolution not only reveals more details of ocean currents especially mesoscale eddy energy associated with geostrophic currents, but also improves the accuracy by up to 5.62 cm/s. This study assesses the capability of Surface Quasi-Geostrophy (SQG) to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) dynamics in four critical areas of the Arctic Ocean: the Nordic, Barents, East Siberian, and Beaufort Seas. We first reconstruct the upper ocean dynamics from TOPAZ4 reanalysis of sea surface height (SSH), surface buoyancy (SSB), and surface velocities (SSV) and validate the results with the geostrophic and total TOPAZ4 velocities. The reconstruction of upper ocean dynamics using SSH fields is in high agreement with the geostrophic velocities, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.8 for the upper 400 m. SSH reconstructions outperform surface buoyancy reconstructions, even in places near freshwater inputs from river discharges, melting sea ice, and glaciers. Surface buoyancy fails due to the uncorrelation of SSB and subsurface potential vorticity (PV). Reconstruction from surface currents correlates to the total TOPAZ4 velocities with correlation coefficients greater than 0.6 up to 200 m. In the second part, we apply the SQG approach validated with the reanalysis outputs to satellite-derived sea level anomalies and validate the results against in-situ measurements. Due to lower water column stratification, the SQG approach's performance is better in fall and winter than in spring and summer. Our results demonstrate that using surface information from SSH or surface velocities, combined with information on the stratification of the water column, it is possible to effectively reconstruct the upper ocean dynamics in the Arctic and Subarctic Seas up to 400 m. Future remote sensing missions in the Arctic Ocean, such as SWOT, Seastar, WaCM, CIMR, and CRISTAL, will produce enhanced SSH and surface velocity observations, allowing SQG schemes to characterize upper ocean 3D mesoscale dynamics up to 400 m with higher resolutions and lower uncertainties. An analysis is made of unstable perturbations of a geostrophic current of finite transverse scale with a vertical parabolic velocity profile of a general form (with linear and constant velocity shear) in a vertically bounded layer. The model is based on the potential vortex equation in the quasi-geostrophic approximation taking into account the vertical diffusion of momentum and mass. The equation and boundary conditions are reduced to a spectral eigenvalue problem of the Orr–Sommerfeld type. To search for eigenfunctions and eigenvalues, a high-precision analytic–numerical method was used. Particular attention is paid to the study of unstable perturbations with a phase velocity exceeding the maximum flow velocity. Such instability should be distinguished from baroclinic instability and critical layer instability. It is found that the indicated instability can develop in ocean currents when the problem parameters vary in a wide range of values. It is also obtained that, at an increase in the Prandtl number, the phase velocity of such perturbations increases and can significantly exceed the maximum flow velocity. However, the occurrence of such unstable perturbations is possible only when the maximum flow velocity is located in the inner region of the layer (but not necessarily in its center). It has also been found that narrow currents (the transverse scale is equal to or smaller than the Rossby radius) with a parabolic vertical profile can be unstable. The most unstable perturbations have approximately equal scales along and across the flow; that is, they are circular perturbations. Subsurface eddies are a special type of oceanic eddy that display the maximum velocity in the subsurface layer. Based on field observations, a lens-shaped subsurface anticyclonic eddy (SAE) was detected in the northern South China Sea (SCS) in May 2021. The SAE was located between 20 and 200 m, with a shoaling of the seasonal thermocline and deepening of the main thermocline. Satellite images showed that the SAE exhibited positive sea level anomaly (SLA) and negative sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly. Eddy track indicated that this SAE originated from the Luzon Strait and was generated in the Kuroshio Loop Current (KLC) last winter. The evolution of the SAE was related to the anomalous water properties inside the eddy and the seasonal change of sea surface heat flux. In winter, the continuous surface cooling and Kuroshio intrusion led to a cold, salty core in the upper part of the anticyclonic eddy, which resulted in a subsurface-intensified structure through geostrophic adjustment. As the season changed from winter to spring, sea surface temperature increased. The lens-shaped structure was formed when the seasonal thermocline appeared near the surface that capped the winter well-mixed water inside the eddy. From 1993 to 2021, nearly half of the winter KLC shedding eddies (12/25) survived to late spring and evolved into subsurface lens-shaped structures. This result indicates that the transition of KLC shedding eddy to SAE is a common phenomenon in the northern SCS, which is potentially important for local air–sea interaction, heat–salt balance, and biogeochemical processes. Significance Statement: Subsurface eddies are lens-shaped eddies with anomalous water properties in the subsurface layer. While such eddies have been reported in many regions of the World Ocean, they are poorly investigated in the SCS, especially the periodic subsurface eddies that appear in a fixed time frame with similar patterns and trajectories. This study reported a subsurface anticyclonic eddy (SAE) in the northern SCS and elucidated its generation and evolution processes. Statistical results confirm that this is a periodic SAE, which occurs nearly annually in late spring and evolves from the Kuroshio shedding eddy with seasonal changes. Ergodic properties of a stochastic medium complexity model for atmosphere and ocean dynamics are analyzed. More specifically, a two-layer quasi-geostrophic model for geophysical flows is studied, with the upper layer being perturbed by additive noise. This model is popular in the geosciences, for instance to study the effects of a stochastic wind forcing on the ocean. A rigorous mathematical analysis however meets with the challenge that in the model under study, the noise configuration is spatially degenerate as the stochastic forcing acts only on the top layer. Exponential convergence of solutions laws to the invariant measure is established, implying a spectral gap of the associated Markov semigroup on a space of Hölder continuous functions. The approach provides a general framework for generalized coupling techniques suitable for applications to dissipative SPDEs. The atmosphere of Venus exhibits equatorial planetary-scale waves that are suspected to play an important role in its complex atmospheric circulation. Due to its particularly long sidereal day (243 terrestrial days against 24 h for the Earth), the Venusian waves must be described with the momentum equations for a cyclostrophic regime, but efforts to derive analytical wave solutions have been scarce. Following a classic approach for the terrestrial quasi-geostrophic regime, I present analytical solutions for equatorial waves in the atmosphere of Venus, assuming a single layer of a homogeneous incompressible fluid with a free surface and focusing on two asymptotic cases described by the ratio of their non-dimensional frequency and zonal wavenumber. One of the dispersion relations that has been obtained describes waves on a small spatial scale propagating upstream relative to the zonal flow, which is associated with a Rossby-type wave called "centrifugal". The solutions for the other asymptotic case were interpreted as inertio-surface waves, which describe planetary-scale waves that can propagate "upstream" and "downstream" relative to the zonal winds and have null group velocity. These new wave solutions stress relevant differences between waves in geostrophic and cyclostrophic regimes and may be applicable to Saturn's moon, Titan, and Venus-like exoplanets. Coastal polynyas in the Ross Sea are important source regions of high-salinity shelf water (HSSW) – the precursor of Antarctic Bottom Water that supplies the lower limb of the thermohaline circulation. Here, the response of sea ice production and HSSW formation to synoptic-scale and mesoscale cyclones was investigated for the Ross Ice Shelf Polynya (RISP) using a coupled ocean–sea ice–ice shelf model targeted on the Ross Sea. When synoptic-scale cyclones prevailed over RISP, sea ice production (SIP) increased rapidly by 20 %–30 % over the entire RISP. During the passage of mesoscale cyclones, SIP increased by about 2 times over the western RISP but decreased over the eastern RISP, resulting respectively from enhancement in the offshore and onshore winds. HSSW formation mainly occurred in the western RISP and was enhanced responding to the SIP increase under both types of cyclones. Promoted HSSW formation could persist for 12–60 h after the decay of the cyclones. The HSSW exports across the Drygalski Trough and the Glomar Challenger Trough were positively correlated with the meridional wind. Such correlations are mainly controlled by variations in geostrophic ocean currents that result from sea surface elevation change and density differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We assess the contribution of flow over the Northeast Greenland Shelf (NEGS) to the total freshwater transport (FWT) through the Fram Strait. We analyze available observations since 2013 consisting of hydrographic sections, new mooring data, and surface‐geostrophic velocity and ERA5 winds. We provide first seasonal estimates of the FWT over the entire shelf and find a net southward FWT between 47 and 56 mSv (reference salinity 34.9), or ∼40%–45% of the total FWT through the Fram Strait. In summer, the long‐term mean FWT east of 8°W cumulates to 27 mSv southward, there is no trend toward increasing FWT, and new mooring data show a large seasonal cycle. We show that the NEGS contributes significantly to the Arctic freshwater outflow, however, uncertainty is high. To close the Arctic freshwater budget and provide better FWT estimates to the North Atlantic, sustained year‐round observations on the NEGS are essential. Plain Language Summary: We use new observations since 2013 to calculate transport over the Northeaster Greenland Shelf for the first time, and investigate how much it adds to the transport of the East Greenland Current over the shelf break which is monitored by moorings. Over most of the shelf, direct observations of ocean properties are limited to summer. Thus, we use remote‐sensing and wind reanalysis data, with shelf‐wide and year‐round coverage, but higher uncertainty, to estimate the year‐round transport of low‐salinity water (freshwater, less than 34.9) over the entire shelf. We find that on the shelf, freshwater transport is at least 40% of the total in Fram Strait. Still, uncertainty is high and year‐round, direct observations in the western part of the shelf are required to provide accurate estimates for the Arctic freshwater outflow. Global ocean surface currents estimated from satellite derived data based on a regular global grid are affected by the grid's shape and placement. Due to different neighbourhood relationships, the rectangular lat/lon grids lose accuracy when interpolating and fitting elevation data. Hexagonal grids have shown to be advantageous due to their isotropic, uniform neighbourhood. Considering these merits, this paper aims to estimate global ocean surface current using a global isotropic hexagonal grid from satellite remote sensing data. First, gridded satellite altimeter data and wind data with different resolutions are interpolated into the centre of the global isotropic hexagonal grid. Then, geostrophic and Ekman currents components are estimated according to the Lagerlof Ocean currents theory. Finally, the inversion results are verified. By analyzing the results, we conclude that the ocean surface currents estimated based on the global isotropic hexagonal grid have considerable accuracy, with improvement over rectangular lat/lon grids. Satellite altimetry missions flying over the ice-covered Arctic Ocean have opened the possibility of further understanding changes in the ocean beneath the sea ice. This requires complex processing of satellite signals emerging from the sea surface in leads within the sea ice, with efforts to generate consistent Arctic-wide datasets of sea surface height ongoing. The aim of this paper is to provide and assess a novel gridded dataset of sea surface height anomaly and geostrophic velocity, which incorporates both the ice-covered and open ocean areas of the Arctic. Data from the CryoSat-2 mission in the period 2011–2020 were gridded at monthly intervals, up to 88 ∘ N, using the Data-Interpolating Variational Analysis (DIVA) method. To examine the robustness of our results, we compare our dataset to independent satellite data, mooring time series and Arctic-wide hydrographic observations. We find that our dataset is well correlated with independent satellite data at monthly timescales. Comparisons to in situ ocean observations show that our dataset provides reliable information on the variability of sea surface height and surface geostrophic currents over geographically diverse regions of the Arctic Ocean and different dynamical regimes and sea ice states. At all comparison sites we find agreement with in situ observed variability at seasonal to interannual timescales. Furthermore, we find that our geostrophic velocity fields can resolve the variability of boundary currents wider than about 50 km, a result relevant for studies of Arctic Ocean circulation. Additionally, large-scale seasonal features emerge. Sea surface height exhibits a wintertime Arctic-wide maximum, with the highest amplitude over the shelves. Also, we find a basin-wide seasonal acceleration of Arctic slope currents in winter. We suggest that this dataset can be used to study not only the large-scale sea surface height and circulation, but also the regionally confined boundary currents. We present a new gridded sea surface height and current dataset produced by combining observations from nadir altimeters and drifting buoys. This product is based on a multiscale and multivariate mapping approach that offers the possibility to improve the physical content of gridded products by combining the data from various platforms and resolving a broader spectrum of ocean surface dynamic than in the current operational mapping system. The dataset covers the entire global ocean and spans from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2020. The multiscale approach decomposes the observed signal into different physical contributions. In the present study, we simultaneously estimate the mesoscale ocean circulations as well as part of the equatorial wave dynamics (e.g. tropical instability and Poincaré waves). The multivariate approach is able to exploit the geostrophic signature resulting from the synergy of altimetry and drifter observations. Sea-level observations in Arctic leads are also used in the merging to improve the surface circulation in this poorly mapped region. A quality assessment of this new product is proposed with regard to an operational product distributed in the Copernicus Marine Service. We show that the multiscale and multivariate mapping approach offers promising perspectives for reconstructing the ocean surface circulation: observations of leads contribute to improvement of the coverage in delivering gap-free maps in the Arctic and observations of drifters help to refine the mapping in regions of intense dynamics where the temporal sampling must be accurate enough to properly map the rapid mesoscale dynamics. Overall, the geostrophic circulation is better mapped in the new product, with mapping errors significantly reduced in regions of high variability and in the equatorial band. This study focuses on the determination and validation of a new global mean sea surface (MSS) model, named the Shandong University of Science and Technology 2020 (SDUST2020), with a grid size of 1′×1′. This new model was established with a 19-year moving average method and fused multi-satellite altimetry data over a 27-year period (from January 1993 to December 2019). The data of HaiYang-2A, Jason-3, and Sentinel-3A were first ingested in the SDUST2020 MSS but not in any other global MSS model, such as the CLS15 and DTU18 MSS models. Validations, including comparisons with the CLS15 and DTU18 MSS models, GPS-leveled tide gauges, and altimeter data, were performed to evaluate the quality of the SDUST2020 MSS model, all of which showed that the SDUST2020 MSS model is accurate and reliable. • Sea surface height and SSH derived geostrophic current from S3A are evaluated. • Measurable accuracy improvements are observed in DD/SAR compared to LRM. • DD/SAR altimetry can resolve small scale current features in the NW Atlantic shelf. In this study, we evaluate Sentinel-3A satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) altimeter observations along the Northwest Atlantic coast, spanning the Nova Scotian Shelf, Gulf of Maine, and Mid-Atlantic Bight. Comparisons are made of altimeter sea surface height (SSH) measurements from three different altimeter data processing approaches: fully-focused synthetic aperture radar (FFSAR), un-focused SAR (UFSAR), and conventional low-resolution mode (LRM). Results show that fully-focused SAR data always outperform LRM data and are comparable or slightly better than the nominal un-focused SAR product. SSH measurement noise in both SAR-mode datasets is significantly reduced compared to LRM. FFSAR SSH 20-Hz noise levels, derived from 80-Hz FFSAR data, are lower than 20-Hz UFSAR SSH with 25% noise reduction offshore of 5 km, and 55–70% within 5 km of the coast. The offshore noise improvement is most likely due to the higher native along-track data posting rate (80 Hz for FFSAR, and 20 Hz for UFSAR), while the large coastal improvement indicates an apparent FFSAR data processing advantage approaching the coastlines. FFSAR-derived geostrophic ocean current estimates exhibit the lowest bias and noise when compared to in situ buoy-measured currents. Assessment at short spatial scales of 5–20 km reveals that Sentinel-3A SAR data provide sharper and more realistic measurement of small-scale sea surface slopes associated with expected nearshore coastal currents and small-scale gyre features that are much less well resolved in conventional altimetric LRM data. Canada ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 2003. With that ratification is an obligation to submit data and information to the U.N. pertaining to the limits of the country's extended continental shelf (ECS); the portion of the juridical continental shelf that extends beyond 200 nautical miles. A team of Canadian scientists, managers, and legal experts that included representation from three Federal Departments (Natural Resources Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Global Affairs Canada) with additional support from other departments, spent 13 years compiling and acquiring data to provide the scientific evidence to support delineation of Canada's seaward most maritime limit. The submission has the potential to provide Canada with 2.4 million km2 of additional submarine landmass in the Atlantic and the Arctic oceans over which Canada exercises sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring and exploiting its natural resources. Specific information such as the tectonic framework of the continental margin, the geomorphology of the margin and in particular the continental slope, the geologic nature of adjoined ridges, rises, and plateaux, and sediment thickness within adjacent basins are examples of fundamental pieces of geoscientific information needed to substantiate Canada's outermost maritime limits. This paper highlights a number of segments of Canada's continental margins to showcase this scientific evidence and how it is applied in the UNCLOS context. In doing so, the paper demonstrates the geologic complexity of Canada's margins as illustrated in scientific publications that have resulted from these new data collections, while at the same time presenting new scientific evidence and interpretations. This collection of data and information provides a wealth of new knowledge in Canada's offshore regions. The massive data compilation in the Atlantic led to conception of continental margins, in a source-to-sink scenario, as having an equilibrium base level or graded form, comparable to river systems. Departures from this shape relate to the interplay of sedimentary processes and in particular to those processes that do not fit the source-to-sink paradigm. For example, a significant part of the Atlantic margin is shown to be heavily influenced by along-slope geostrophic currents that generated massive contourite drift deposits. These deposits reflect lateral transport of sediment that had a significant impact on the morphology of the margin. The role of mass transport processes in shaping continental margins is also highlighted, and in particular the collapses of entire segments of the margin were observed. The prominent role mass failure processes play in delivering sediment to the adjacent abyssal plain is also critical in the ECS context. These observations challenge the entrenched notion of a continental margin comprising a shelf, slope, and rise and in particular the concept of the "continental rise". Prior to 2006, regions of the Arctic Ocean seaward of the Canadian landmass had fewer than 5000 km of seismic reflection data. The massive efforts of Arctic coastal States to map their margins for ECS purposes have led to a leap in technological advances to acquire data in ice-covered seas and have led to a wealth of new geoscientific knowledge. Perhaps foremost amongst this knowledge is demonstration that Canada Basin is indeed a fully developed ocean basin, albeit significantly infilled with sediment. Based on this knowledge and identification of related structures, new realistic tectonic scenarios for opening of the Amerasia Basin are proposed that include a significant component of transform or strike-slip motions. With seismic velocity and rock sample information, the continental nature of Alpha and Mendeleev ridges has been substantiated. Even bathymetric data were lacking in the Arctic and new editions of seafloor maps now support grids of 500 m spacing; although some regions remain sparse. Once thought to be relatively stagnant, sedimentary processes such as found in many ocean basins were discovered in the Arctic Ocean. The trajectories of 114 000 passive particles regularly distributed on a grid in the Sea of Okhotsk are calculated for each day of the interval from January 31, 1997 to March 10, 2021, based on satellite altimetry data on geostrophic current speeds. All particles coming to the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean are identified and the age of the Pacific-origin waters and the area where these waters enter the sea are determined. Using daily vessel-position data in the walleye pollock fishery from 1997 to 2021, Lagrangian maps of the origin and age of the Pacific waters over the same period, and statistical analysis, it is shown that the Walleye pollock fishing grounds are more often in the Pacific waters which passed through the northern Kuril Straits not more than 100 days before the catch dates than in the waters which entered the sea to the south or have been in the sea for more than 100 days. Analysis of satellite imagery of sea surface temperatures leads to the conclusion that the reasons for the aggregation of walleye pollock catch locations in intrusions and Lagrangian fronts of Pacific waters are their warmer temperatures and higher concentrations of feed.
