This exploratory study provides an overview of prominent themes pertaining to portrayals of sign languages (SLs) and Deaf people in the South African press (2011-2019), as well as an analysis of a subset of articles to illustrate the discursive constructions of each of the prominent ideological framings. The findings of the paper suggest that many ways of representing South African Sign Language (SASL) and their users align with international trends. The two most prominent ideological framings are the medical/disability model and the linguistic minority model. Within the medical model, SLs are seen as inferior means of communication used by a disabled minority. Within the linguistic minority framework SLs are regarded as natural, legitimate languages deserving equal status to spoken languages. The paper also identifies an ideological framing that is not predicted by the international literature, coined here as 'diversity tokenism'. Diversity tokenism is when SL is mentioned only to increase perceived diversity, where diversity is a commodity that holds social capital. This portrayal of SASL seems to be increasing and holds a warning: although SASL users have received official recognition and rights through the recent declaration of SASL as an official language, it might not be the end of the battle to ensure that users of SASL can live out their linguistic citizenship.

This paper aims to review the main research points regarding DC fast charging stations. At the beginning, the paper addresses an overview of DC fast charging standards, galvanic isolation, EV powertrain, and some examples of real DC fast chargers. This part highlights that DC fast chargers are usually connected to an AC network or microgrid, whereas DC microgrids would be a better choice to increase the charging efficiency and reduce the costs. However, the lack of standards in terms of protection and metering made their spread limited for the moment. Moreover, the paper describes the power converter topologies typically adopted in DC fast charging stations and emerging solutions to interface EVs with both 400 V and 800 V powertrains. Then, the paper explains the main architectural features of DC fast charging stations connected to DC networks or microgrids because of their potential to become the standard infrastructure in this field. Furthermore, the energy management strategies for DC fast charging stations are discussed, taking into account their relevant goals. Finally, cybersecurity issues of charging stations are covered, also considering their impact on grid and electric vehicle supply equipment, and providing a particular discussion regarding DC fast charging stations.

The ever-increasing need for coral restoration as a tool available to mitigate reef declines and aid in the recovery of lost ecosystem services requires improving restoration performance over time through an adaptive management framework to evaluate the status of restoration programs using uniform, consistent metrics. An evaluation tool, presented herein, allows restoration practitioners and managers to self-evaluate the robustness of each project and identify successful metrics, those metrics that need special attention, and changes to restoration strategies that can improve performance and aid recovery. This tool is designed to allow programs to track the progress of each key metric over time to assist in improving upon successes and learning from failures. The metrics within this restoration evaluation tool focus on published best-management practices and have resulted from extensive research conducted by restoration experts over the past 20 years. Common metrics of growth and survival are included, in addition to parameters vital to the operational success of restoration programs, such as coral reproduction, recruitment of associated reef taxa, increasing habitat for reef fisheries, and improving overall reef habitat. Five Caribbean restoration programs, each with at least 15 years of restoration experience, are presented as case studies. Each program was evaluated based on six restoration categories including: field-based nurseries, outplantings, programmatic management, education and outreach, event-driven restoration, and socioeconomic restoration. Category-specific metrics were scored with a binary scoring system and summarized using a stop-light indicator framework, where the resulting color/score indicates the operations tatus of the different program components (Scores >75% = green/successful; 50–74.9% = light green > yellow > orange/intermediate; 75% indicating most of these programs are performing well, are versatile, well managed, and sustainable. Outside of environmental factors and large-scale disturbance events, many programs described resource limitations, including funding and staffing, as reasons for scoring low on some metrics. A holistic evaluation rubric incorporated into programmatic self-assessment can ensure that restoration projects and programs are working towards success and sustainability.

The objective of this study was to investigate the nutrient composition of low-grade New Zealand commercial fish (Gemfish and Hoki) roe and to investigate the effects of delipidation and freeze-drying processes on roe hydrolysis and antioxidant activities of their protein hydrolysates. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the Hoki and Gemfish roe homogenates was carried out using three commercial proteases: Alcalase, bacterial protease HT, and fungal protease FP-II. The protein and lipid contents of Gemfish and Hoki roes were 23.8% and 7.6%; and 17.9% and 10.1%, respectively. The lipid fraction consisted mainly of monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) in both Gemfish roe (41.5%) and Hoki roe (40.2%), and docosahexaenoic (DHA) was the dominant polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in Gemfish roe (21.4%) and Hoki roe (18.6%). Phosphatidylcholine was the main phospholipid in Gemfish roe (34.6%) and Hoki roe (28.7%). Alcalase achieved the most extensive hydrolysis, and its hydrolysate displayed the highest 2,2-dipheny1-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)˙ and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activities and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The combination of defatting and freeze-drying treatments reduced DPPH˙ scavenging activity (by 38%), ABTS˙ scavenging activity (by 40%) and ferric (Fe3+) reducing power by18% (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that pre-processing treatments of delipidation and freeze-drying could negatively impact the effectiveness of enzymatic hydrolysis in extracting valuable compounds from low grade roe.

The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the relationship between vicarious trauma (VT) symptoms and subthreshold post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among practicing counselors. The researchers determined the frequency of VT symptoms and subthreshold PTSD symptoms experienced among practicing counselors and common contributing factors that participants felt contributed to the development of VT symptoms. Implications are presented for counselor educators to determine how they best can prepare students.

ABSTRACT Background: The ectopic pelvic kidney, a common renal anomaly, is often smaller and malformed, with a shorter and sometimes tortuous ureter (1). Muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), constituting 15-25% of bladder cancer cases (2), mandates radical cystectomy with a 50% 5-year survival rate (2). Despite the growing use of robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) (3, 4), there is limited data on its application in ectopic kidneys. Only one RARC case has been reported (5), in contrast to numerous open radical cystectomies (1, 6) involving an ectopic kidney. Patient and methods: After being diagnosed with T2 high-grade urothelial carcinoma, the 66-year-old patient, previously treated with multiple transurethral resections and adjuvant BCG therapy, received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Preoperative staging CT revealed a 2.6 x 2.2 cm bladder neoformation and an ectopic right pelvic kidney. Results: Using the da Vinci Surgical System, radical cystectomy with ileal conduit (sec Wallace II) and lymphadenectomy were performed. During the demolition phase, the shorter right ureter was dissected with care to avoid damage to the renal pedicle. The reconstructive phase included intracorporeal urinary diversion (ICUD) and uretero-ileal anastomosis, facilitated by the favorable position of the kidney. The 8-hour console surgery resulted in minimal blood loss. Discharged on day 16 due to COVID-19, the patient exhibited positive outcomes. A 2-month CT follow-up revealed no cancer recurrence, metastasis, hydronephrosis, and complete regression of the lymphocele. Imaging follow-up continues without postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion: Robotic surgery with intracorporeal urinary diversion holds potential for right-sided pelvic kidney cases, but additional studies are necessary for validation.

Inclusion at academic events is facing increased scrutiny as the communities these events serve raise their expectations for who can practically attend. Active efforts in recent years to bring more diversity to academic events have brought progress and created momentum. However, we must reflect on these efforts and determine which underrepresented groups are being disadvantaged. Inclusion at academic events is important to ensure diversity of discourse and opinion, to help build networks, and to avoid academic siloing. All of these contribute to the development of a robust and resilient academic field. We have developed these Ten Simple Rules both to amplify the voices that have been speaking out and to celebrate the progress of many Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity practices that continue to drive the organisation of academic events. The Rules aim to raise awareness as well as provide actionable suggestions and tools to support these initiatives further. This aims to support academic organisations such as the Deep Learning Indaba, Neuromatch Academy, the IBRO-Simons Computational Neuroscience Imbizo, Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG), Arabs in Neuroscience, FAIRPoints, and OLS (formerly Open Life Science). This article is a call to action for organisers to reevaluate the impact and reach of their inclusive practices.

The aims of this work were to investigate the printability of high-fraction wood and sodium-silicate composites (WSSC) for additive manufacturing and to develop a screw extrusion-based process to demonstrate this approach for building construction applications. A custom additive manufacturing system was fabricated, and mixtures of 40%–60% wood fiber and 60%–40% sodium silicate were printed. The printability of these formulations was determined by observing their viscosity, extrudability, print-bed and layer adhesion, and curing characteristics. Fiber to resin ratios of 45:55 to 50:50 were the most suitable for printing. The printability was also affected by printing temperature and nozzle travel speed. The mechanical properties of printed and cured WSSC, were determined by three-point bending, tensile, and compression testing. Tensile strength, bending strength, and elastic modulus were found to be comparable to those of 3D printed concrete and other wood-plastic composites reported in the literature. The WSSC was successfully printed into a panel indicating promise for use in additive manufacturing.

Abstract Background Poor quality of care, including overprovision (unnecessary care) is a global health concern. Greater provider effort has been shown to increase the likelihood of correct treatment, but its relationship with overprovision is less clear. Providers who make more effort may give more treatment overall, both correct and unnecessary, or may have lower rates of overprovision; we test which is true in the Tanzanian private health sector. Methods Standardised patients visited 227 private-for-profit and faith-based facilities in Tanzania, presenting with symptoms of asthma and TB. They recorded history questions asked and physical examinations carried out by the provider, as well as laboratory tests ordered, treatments prescribed, and fees paid. A measure of provider effort was constructed on the basis of a checklist of recommended history taking questions and physical exams. Results 15% of SPs received the correct care for their condition and 74% received unnecessary care. Increased provider effort was associated with increased likelihood of correct care, and decreased likelihood of giving unnecessary care. Providers who made more effort charged higher fees, through the mechanism of higher consultation fees, rather than increased fees for lab tests and drugs. Conclusion Providers who made more effort were more likely to treat patients correctly. A novel finding of this study is that they were also less likely to provide unnecessary care, suggesting it is not simply a case of some providers doing “more of everything”, but that those who do more in the consultation give more targeted care.

This article proposes a new method of modelling dynamic loads based on instantaneous p-q theory, to be employed in large powers system network simulations in a digital real-time environment. Due to the use of computationally heavy blocks such as phase-locked-loop (PLL), mean calculation,and coordinate transformation blocks (e.g., abc–dq0), real-time simulation of large networks with dynamic loads can be challenging. In order to decrease the computational burden associated to the dynamic load modelling, a p-q theory-based approach for load modelling is proposed in this paper. This approach is based on the well-known p-q instantaneous theory developed for power electronics converters, and it consists only of linear controllers and of a minimal usage of control loops, reducing the required computational power. This improves real-time performance and allows larger scale simulations. The introduced p-q theory-based load (PQL) model has been tested on standard networks implemented in a digital real time simulator, such as the SimBench semi-urban medium voltage network and the 118-bus Distribution System, showing significant improvement in terms of computational capability with respect to standard load models (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink dynamic load).

Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) facilitates the testing of novel power engineering solutions in the lab, allowing a flexible testing environment while keeping the high testing fidelity of real hardware. Due to the analog/digital intersection of the PHIL setup, selecting simply continuous or single-rate discrete-time domain fails to model such a hybrid system accurately. This article proposes a multi-rate discrete-time modeling approach of a PHIL setup that can estimate the mixed analog and digital nature of the PHIL accurately, resulting in accuracy improvement over a wide range of frequencies. The proposed approach applies two different sampling times, a large one connected to the digital simulator and a small one for modeling the analog-hardware part. Dynamics and delays of interfaces, such as analog-to-digital converters, the power amplifier, the sensor, and the low-pass filter, have been accurately modeled and validated by means of experimental results.
