9. Class and Pedagogies: Visible and Invisible.

Abstract

This paper defines the "invisible pedagogy," a teaching model used in British infant schools, and discusses its relationship to middle class culture, working class culture, and "visible" pedagogy. The invisible pedagogy is characterized by several features including (1) implicit rather than explicit control over the child by the teacher; (2) reduced emphasis on the transmission and acquisition of specific skills; (3) relatively free activity by the child in exploring and rearranging an environment arranged by the teacher; and (4) use of many diffuse criteria to evaluate the pedagogy. It is suggested that the basic concept of the invisible pedagogy in infant schools is play, which socializes the child while he explores and allows the teacher to evaluate his development. Theories of learning which are consistent with the invisible pedagogy are described in general terms. The differences between visible and invisible pedagogies are described as reflecting an ideological conflict between the old and new middle classes, and the social significance of the invisible pedagogy is said to differ according to the social class of the child. Problems arising in the transition of children from homes to preschools with invisible pedagogy, and from these preschools to secondary schools and universities with visible pedagogy, are discussed. Abstract

Este artigo busca demonstrar como o conceito de competência - que surgiu em diferentes campos das ciências sociais - entrou na área da educação, em estreita relação com o aparecimento das pedagogias invisíveis. Contrapondo-se a ele, definiu-se o conceito de desempenho, articulado agora com as pedagogias visíveis. Analisam-se as diferenças existentes na utilização desses conceitos, decorrentes do fato de que diferentes fundamentos os alicerçam. Mostra-se, também, a relação entre as diversas formas de desempenho e competência nos contextos educacionais mais amplos (que abrangem processos escolares e não-escolares) e a construção de identidades, indicando como este último processo, tido como dinâmico, é perpassado por resistências e oposições. Por último, procura-se identificar, na fase atual do capitalismo, o processo de construção de identidades privilegiado pela educação escolar, bem como seus conflitos com outros processos análogos que se dão fora da escola. A presença desses conflitos abre, no entanto, a possibilidade de uma reavaliação crítica das instituições escolares e dos princípios e dos aspectos focalizados em seus discursos.

Abstract

This article presents a sociolinguistic approach to socialization. The author remarks that in terms of the particular of the relationship between class and the process of its cultural reproduction, what has to be shown is how class regulation of the distribution of power and of principles of control generates, distributes, reproduces, and legitimates dominant and dominated principles regulating the relationships within and between social groups and so forms of consciousness. The author analyses how the distribution of power and the principles of control are transformed, at the level of the subject, into different, but related, organizing principles, in such a way as both to position subjects and to create the possibility of change in such positioning. There has been a movement from the giving of definitions in terms of linguistic indices to definitions in terms of their underlying semantic. In both cases the underlying semantic was considered to be the regulator of specific linguistic realizations.

Abstract

The author discusses the existence of general principles that affect the cultural and personal transformation of the subjects during the process of upbringing. In order to find a solution to this problem, the author focuses more on the process of transmission of educational contents than on the contents themselves. The transmissions is carried out though language, which, although subjected to stable rules, cannot be considered completely neutral from the ideological point of view, as it tends to emphasize the meanings produced by dominant social groups. During the relation of upbriging, the transmission is carried out also through a pedagogical instrument. This works according to rules that play a relevant role in the determination of the content and the forms of the relation of upbringing. The three main rules of pedagogical grammar are then examined: the distributive rules, the recontex-tualizing rules and the rules of evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
