Pacific fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus velifera), once the most abundant cetacean species in British Columbia (BC), were also one of the most heavily targeted by commercial whaling. Much of what we know about their phenology and ecology is from catch records, but their current status has not yet been summarized in Canadian waters. Here, we collated evidence from dedicated surveys, opportunistic sightings, and passive acoustic records that had not been reported before and reviewed them in the context of past data. This was to add new findings to what is known, and to establish if the population was showing signs of recovery. This is particularly relevant considering discussions of downlisting their population status in Canada from endangered to threatened. We then asked if this rebounding was consistent with what is known about pre-whaling presence and movement patterns, or if changes in whale distribution reflected altered oceanic regimes, prey availability, or increased anthropogenic pressures. The evidence suggested that fin whale populations in the northeast Pacific Ocean are repopulating areas along the BC coast recognized as part of their historic range. However, they are recovering in a different ocean than they were removed from, which makes them increasingly vulnerable to new anthropogenic threats. The sightings data suggested that, at least for the west coast of Vancouver Island, this repopulation has occurred over a relatively short period, with fin whales still absent from regular surveys as recent as the early 2000's. Business managers must create and keep records for decision-making. Yet doing so presents an obvious problem for those who manage illegal businesses: their records would make for powerful evidence in the hands of prosecutors. That problem raises a question--why would one knowingly create and keep such records when their mere existence risks detection and sanction? The answer, in short, is that the interaction of illicit activity's complexity and continuity compels recordkeeping. A business, including a criminal one, cannot be managed without adequate information about its operations, obligations, and condition. Just how complex and long-lived its affairs are will drive the scale and scope of its recordkeeping requirements. Beyond these high-level intuitions, this Article contributes a theory of how the trueness or falsity of criminal business records, as well as the organizational settings in which they occur, shape their managerial uses and associated criminal-legal risks. This theory in turn yields principles for deterring illicit activity in organizations. When such activity is the kind enabled by recordkeeping, it can be prevented, or at least mitigated, by policies that inhibit the production of business records. It can also be countered by policies that encourage those records' retention. Despite the contradiction implied by these two principles, together they promote ex ante deterrence and ex post detection and sanction. Although such interventions can be directed at any organizationally complex and long-lived illicit activity, their greatest promise is in informing compliance policies, practices, and programs in licit organizations (like large corporations) that already are obliged, or that seek, to proactively prevent law violations. This article was written in part to thank the ARSC for the generous award of a grant in spring 2024 to defray expenses whilst researching into British made 78 rpm and vinyl bell records.1 That it focuses on a subset of the 78 rpm record element is because, post-grant, which amongst other things allowed access to two major archives, it became more evident than previously that a relatively large number of privately produced change ringing 78s existed when compared to a relatively small number of change ringing--or indeed any bellringing--records produced by commercial labels. This paper documents attempts by the bellringers themselves to get their music, the result of their exercise2, onto record during the shellac era. The Discography includes all known privately produced church and other tower bell records, including recordings of carillons, plus records of change ringing performed on handbells. Most of these records will have been made in small numbers. Indeed, only two of the records listed were advertised in The Ringing World, the journal of the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers (CCCBR), though a handful more seem to have enjoyed at least some scale of wider distribution within the UK. The term "strong leader" is generally understood to mean a leader who concentrates power in his or her hands, dominates public policy and the political party to which he or she belongs, and takes the big decisions. Many contemporary politicians present themselves as leaders in this mold and there is substantial public support around the world for this type of leader. Recent research, however, has questioned the desirability of strong leaders, finding that they are high-risk individuals who often have negative records in office. This article is concerned specifically with the personalist authoritarian strong leaders who hold office in the Former Soviet Union (FSU), a grouping that has received little attention in this emerging literature. The article sets out to ascertain whether these personalist authoritarians have been successful leaders as well as strong ones. We undertake this by examining performance (according to a variety of socio-economic and governance indicators) in the 15 states of the FSU in the period 2000–2020. This study finds no evidence of exceptional performance in the states with personalist authoritarian leaders in this time period. Rather, what these personalist leaders have offered is authoritarianism, poor governance, and socio-economic performance that is middling to poor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Storage facilities often comprise the most energy-intensive burden within archives. One green solution is a passive building with high thermal inertia and airtightness, to create stable environmental conditions without mechanical intervention, and provide appropriate temperature and RH ranges and good air quality for preservation. However, where airtightness is concerned, there is potential for accumulation of pollutants within densely occupied repositories such as library and archive stores. This risk is not addressed by current requirements for greener operation, because operational conflicts arise when balancing these three environmental parameters. This article discusses air quality and its effects on archive materials. It contributes to better understanding of green operation for archives. It presents a preliminary study carried out at Norfolk Record Office in the UK on options to increase archives storage capacity whilst improving both public access and preservation. This concluded that an initial programme to replace low-quality packaging which is a generator of VOCs, and the building of on-site passive storage, were the most sustainable solutions. The obituary in "Archives & Records" pays tribute to Katharine Schofield, an archivist at the Essex Record Office from 1989 until her passing in 2022. Katharine played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of the Record Office's archive management system, Seax, which is still in use over 20 years later. She also contributed significantly to converting paper catalogues to electronic form and assisting with various projects, including hosting archivists from Slovakia. Katharine's dedication to her work and her sense of humor made her a beloved figure at the ERO, leaving a lasting impact on her colleagues and the records of Essex. [Extracted from the article]

This study aims to determine the kinds of correspondence records that are managed by village offices, how to store them, how to handle them, and the means used to store them so that the records retrieval is easy so as allowing the data contained in the records as a source of information. Through surveys and observations, the research took place in all village offices in Jatilawang sub-district, Banyumas district, Central Java province. From the results of the survey and observation, the researchers concluded that there are differences from one village office to another in the management of correspondence records. However, there are similarities in the handling of the correspondence records, namely every incoming letter and outgoing letter are recorded first in the agenda book, the village head knows every incoming and outgoing letters because every letter received by the office should be transferred first to the Village Head to be assigned to a certain village staff to execute the purpose of the letter. All records are principally managed by Kaur (kepala Urusan) or staff for mail handling and administration affairs, but Kaur or staff for Kesejahteraan or welfare affairs and Kepala Dusun or staff for human empowerment still retain some correspondence records. This essay stages an encounter between surveillance studies and the sociology of price and price formation. I argue that surveillance is integral to the calculative operations of retail price strategies, especially during periods of high inflation, and that these calculative operations hinge on the human infrastructure of a precarious data-collecting workforce. I present my argument through a case study of competitor price monitoring, a corporate surveillance practice in which commercial actors record, process, and transmit information on competitors' pricing, inventory, and display strategies. While pricing intelligence services like web-scraping and dynamic pricing algorithms are typically applied in e-commerce settings, I focus here on a firm that specializes in the collection of brick-and-mortar retail price data, with special attention to the labor practices involved in the manual (in-person, device-aided) production of retail price information at the national-industrial scale. Building on auto-ethnographic observations as a price data collector as well as analysis of employee reviews of the firm on sites like Indeed and Glassdoor, I argue that surveillance studies can contribute in significant ways to our understanding of the material practices, and politics, of price and price formation. Reliable site selection for the installation of solar power stations in urban areas is critical for the reason that one of the criteria parameters, aerosol pollution, which is a significant threat to the performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems, is happened to be varied place to place within and surrounding areas of the urban region. Therefore, the present work is an attempt to ascertain the potential reduction of solar power generation between a commercial and a background site in the urban region of Lucknow, India. Power generation of 125-kW/h capacities of solar PV modules is installed in two campuses (i.e., commercial region and background region) of a national research institute CSIR-IITR, Lucknow. Simultaneous on-site hourly particle pollution measurements for PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were captured using optical principle-based PALAS Frog Dust Analyzer for both locations from morning 7 AM to evening 5 PM during February 15–21, 2021 (i.e., Monday–Sunday). Mean concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were recorded for the commercial area as 47 µg/m3, 76 µg/m3, and 164 µg/m3, and in the background area as 20 µg/m3, 39 µg/m3, and 69 µg/m3, respectively. Despite the unchanged solar irradiance over the city, the power outputs of the solar power station located at the background area are found consistently higher than the power station at the commercial area as recorded atmospheric PM# levels at the commercial site are higher. Further, identified the deposition of dust particles on PV panels is gradually increased from clean-day to dusty-day, and this is relatively enhanced with higher level at commercial area than city background due to the load of coarse size particles in the ambient air and their instantaneous deposition on solar panels. Therefore, the loss of solar power output was found maximum of 17.2% and 6.17% in the commercial area and the background area, respectively. The study results revealed the importance of the selection of pollution-free sites for the effectiveness of energy generation by the solar power station in urban regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores ways of understanding archival material through collection-based research. Using War Office records held in the UK's National Archives, particularly those relating to Army officers in the period 1790-1820, it provides a methodological framework through worked examples that draws upon documentary analysis and archival material culture, as well as offering a new approach of archival experimental archaeology to reconstruct processes and practices that led to the creation of records. This research shows that the history of documents is critical — though often under appreciated — to historical knowledge. Our approach stresses the importance of examining historically the creation, form, and storage of archival material. Additionally, it demonstrates the value of archivists and historians reconnecting for good practice and research insights and agendas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In October 1688, and again in May 1689, Mary Cudmore claimed to have encountered a 'spectre' in her employers' house in Cork city. The great interest the story aroused among the townspeople is indicated in letters from prominent inhabitants and an examination of Mary by the bishop of Cork and Ross. They allow us access into the homes and heads of the people of Cork at a point when significant challenges were being mounted to the Protestant authorities' dominance of the city, as the War of the Two Kings loomed, and as memories of other conflicts stirred. As observers weighed questions of scruple and certainty, and balanced concerns about imposture and creditworthiness, we also glimpse shifts in supernatural belief and contemporary debates about the construction of proof and truth. That anything of Mary's experiences has survived is remarkable, given the loss of most of the contents of the Dublin Public Record Office in 1922. In the context of ongoing deliberate and negligent destruction of archives, this article thus also argues for consideration of and consideration to partial and phantom histories. This article examines the history of silent film production in south Florida with a focus on production context. Interest in south Florida as a site for film production increased around 1919 and flourished for several years. Production activity in south Florida in the early 1920s centered around Miami Studios in Hialeah, built in the summer of 1921. Within four short years, the facility had become virtually unutilized for film production. By reconstructing the events and processes surrounding the production of motion pictures filmed in south Florida—utilizing contemporaneous newspaper and magazine reports, business records and correspondences, and other extant archives—this study questions why film producers were interested in Florida and seeks to elucidate why this interest shifted by the end of the silent era. Focus will center around the production of D.W. Griffith's The White Rose, filmed at Miami Studios during the 1922–23 winter season. This investigation demonstrates that the seasonality of Florida film production, despite the presence of industry heavyweight Griffith, ultimately led to the failure of Miami Studios to sustain long term operations. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) is widely used as a measure of feed use efficiency in commercial aquaculture production and research. Surprisingly, little work has focused on the factors that affect FCR in plankton‐based, commercial ponds despite the widespread use of FCR as a production metric. Proposals to use FCR as a numeric standard for environmental regulation (mandatory or voluntary) raise questions as to whether FCR meets the reliability and consistency requirements of a good metric, and whether it would lead to desired behavioral changes. This article summarizes FCR data from university research verification programs conducted on US catfish farms and databases developed from commercial farm records. The relevant research literature is synthesized with respect to factors that affect FCR. US catfish is used as a case study because pond‐level data from verification trials (Extension/research‐led on‐farm trials of best available science) and commercial farm records are available. While specific to US catfish production, the analysis provides insights into factors affecting FCR that likely apply to other pond‐based aquaculture species. Commercial verification of pond data showed (1) significant variation in FCR (coefficients of variation from 1% to 47%) among ponds with similar stocking, feeding, and aeration rates; (2) significant effects of survival on FCR; and (3) no significant effects on FCR of yield, feed type, management, or production system. Improvements in FCR would occur with improved survival that requires improved management of federally protected fish‐eating bird populations and development of additional, effective vaccines for diseases. FCRs were found to not exhibit the degree of reliability and consistency required for use as an effective metric or numeric standard for regulatory purposes. Use of FCR for mandatory or voluntary regulation is unlikely to lead to behavioral changes by farmers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Danish fire loss dataset records commercial fire losses under three insurance coverages: building, contents, and profits. Existing research has primarily focused on the heavy-tail behaviour of the losses but ignored the relationship among different insurance coverages. In this paper, we aim to model the aggregate loss for all three coverages. To study the pairwise dependence of claims from all types of coverage, an independent model, a hierarchical model, and some copula-based models are proposed for the frequency component. Meanwhile, we applied composite distributions to capture the heavy-tailed severity component. It is shown that consideration of dependence for the multi-peril frequencies (i) significantly enhances model goodness-of-fit and (ii) provides more accurate risk measures of the aggregated losses for all types of coverage in total. Ray Wile (1923 - 2016) was a longtime and beloved member of ARSC and a pre-eminent authority and writer on the early days of sound recording. He was uniquely driven in his pursuit of the history of the early phonograph era, seeking out records of long forgotten entertainment, business and scientific personalities and entities. He was unfailingly generous with his discoveries, and contributed many key articles to the ARSC Journal and presentations at ARSC conferences. In a recent issue of the ARSC Newsletter, President Tim Brooks named Ray's 1985 article "Record Piracy" as one of his key works. It remains a unique contribution to the field, documenting the myriad schemes and methods of making and selling unauthorized copies of commercial recordings that have plagued the recording industry since its earliest days, even as advances in copyright law benefitted and protected other creators and manufacturers. It's all the more impressive when one realizes that there were no internet tools at the time, and one wonders how many coins he fed into library photocopiers, how many miles of microfilm he scrolled through and how many document requests he made. His source note on the five institutions who each held a portion of the complete run of The Phonogram speaks volumes about research in this era. And has anyone yet found the special preview issue of The Phonoscope that he mentions? This will be the first in an occasional series of reprints of articles from the ARSC Journal that represent unique contributions to the field. The original text has been retained with the same formatting of footnotes and endnotes, though it does not reflect the Journal's current formatting. All of the original illustrations have been reproduced, though they are now integrated into the text, rather than being grouped at the end, as in the original publication. The popularity of cinema from its earliest days in small-town settings emphasises the importance of local circumstances in explaining the medium's success. This article employs surviving business records relating to the Picture House in the Scottish burgh of Campbeltown to explore aspects of cinema-going peculiar to that corner of rural Argyllshire, including a propensity, hitherto unidentified among Scottish audiences, to support the productions of the British film industry. Beyond this, the Picture House has a broader significance. As a monopoly provider of commercial entertainment to an enclosed market, it offers telling insights into a key point of transition for cinema, that from silent to sound film. Placed in the context of national trends, documented by data relating to the taxation of entertainments, Campbeltown provides compelling evidence that the advent of the talkies marked a fundamental discontinuity in the history of the medium at all levels, from the local to the national. Isobel (London & Harrogate) Ltd was the second fashion business established by Jewish immigrant Isobel Nathan between 1925 and 1940. Nathan had premises at 223 Regent Street by 1922 and later at 70 Grosvenor Street, London, but she had also established a branch salon and workrooms in 1917 in the fashionable Yorkshire spa town of Harrogate. This under-researched dress house has largely faded into obscurity. During this time, however, the Isobel label signified 'British-made' luxury fashion, and, focused on the home markets, Nathan employed over 450 workers nationally. This article examines Nathan's business practice of northern regionalism; that British did not just mean London and its metropolitan clientele. Through examination of unpublished business records alongside both editorial copy and advertising from the period, this article identifies the Harrogate salon as pioneering move to reach a broader clientele, connect to British manufacturers and reduce the seasonality of the fashion trade. This article recognizes Nathan as a notable early British couturier in the inter-war years who leveraged designing and marketing to her northern clientele to successfully service the home market as an 'All British' brand. Background: Ocular following responses (OFRs)—small-amplitude, short-latency reflexive eye movements—have been used to study visual motion processing, with potential diagnostic applications. However, they are difficult to record with commercial, video-based eye trackers, especially in children. Objective: We aimed to design and develop a noninvasive eye tracker specialized for measuring OFRs, trading off lower temporal resolution and a smaller range for higher spatial resolution. Methods: We developed a high-resolution eye-tracking system based on a high-resolution camera operating in the near-infrared spectral range, coupled with infrared illuminators and a dedicated postprocessing pipeline, optimized to measure OFRs in children. To assess its performance, we: (1) evaluated our algorithm for compensating small head movements in both artificial and real-world settings, (2) compared OFRs measured simultaneously by our system and a reference scleral search coil eye-tracking system, and (3) tested the system's ability to measure OFRs in a clinical setting with children. Results: The simultaneous measurement by our system and a reference system showed that our system achieved an in vivo resolution of approximately 0.06°, which is sufficient for recording OFRs. Head motion compensation was successfully tested, showing a displacement error of less than 5 μm. Finally, robust OFRs were detected in 16 children during recording sessions lasting less than 5 minutes. Conclusions: Our high-resolution, noninvasive eye-tracking system successfully detected OFRs with minimal need for subject cooperation. The system effectively addresses the limits of other OFR measurement methods and offers a versatile solution suitable for clinical applications, particularly in children, where eye tracking is more challenging. The system could potentially be suitable for diagnostic applications, particularly in pediatric populations where early detection of visual disorders like stereodeficiencies is critical. Purpose: This study aims to synthesize records and information management (RIM) with the professional literature of industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology to explain undesirable recordkeeping behaviors that may manifest in employees who interact with business records. Design/methodology/approach: The author's views are based on a literature review of both records management and organizational psychology trends and draw on case studies that identify undesirable recordkeeping behavior. Findings: There is considerable overlap between the problems encountered by RIM professionals and the answers offered by I/O psychology. I/O psychology offers us the tools to better understand recordkeeping behaviors. Business record keeping, along with business planning, are foundational steps in businesses moving from informal stature to contributing to the capitalization of assets. Thus, the transitioning of informal businesses to business record keeping and planning is significant for economic development. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between the gender of informal business owners and their engagement in business record keeping and planning in an emerging economy. We take advantage of a unique data set on informal enterprises in Iraq to show that women, versus male, leaders of informal businesses are more likely to adopt business record keeping and formal business planning. Following the foundational theories of Max Weber (Gerth and Mills 2014), we attribute our results to groups that are excluded from dominant relationship networks relying more on rational bureaucracy. This paper presents a holographic sensor based on reflection holograms recorded in the commercial photopolymer Bayfol® HX 200. The recording geometry and index modulation of the hologram were optimised to improve accuracy for this specific application. The sensor was subjected to tests using various analytes, and it exhibited sensitivity to acetic acid and ethanol. The measurements revealed a correlation between the concentration of the analyte in contact with the sensor's surface and the resulting wavelength shift of the diffracted light. The minimum detectable concentrations were determined to be above 0.09 mol/dm3 for acetic acid and 5% (v/v) for ethanol. Notably, the sensors demonstrated a rapid response time. Given that ethanol serves as a base for alcoholic beverages, and acetic acid is commonly found in commercial vinegar, these sensors hold promise for applications in food quality control. With the development of science digitalization, it became possible to detect dishonest behavior. The increasing magnitude of predatory publishing has boosted scientific research on the topic. While studies on university leaders' impact concentrate mainly on its positive effects on organizational performance, to date, little is known about whether academic leaders can negatively influence the organizations they lead depending on their engagement in academic misconduct. Using a sample of Russian universities and their leaders from 2010–2020, I ask whether universities tend to adopt leaders' dishonest behavior. Specifically, I analyzed whether universities increase publications in potentially predatory journals after a leader with such a record enters the office. Relying on a culture theory of academic misconduct, I discuss the role-related factors that contribute to a leader's influence over employees. I focus on whether the leader's influence relates to external incentives for universities to publish more, the leader's career development type, or the leader's and university's research area. The findings demonstrate that the share of publications in potentially predatory journals tends to increase if a leader with such publications assumes office, especially if the university is research-oriented. Although undoubtedly important to the dynamics of heatwaves, the role of the boundary layer has received relatively little attention. Here, a 16-year (2003-2018) record of commercial aircraft observations centred on Melbourne Airport (37.7°S, 144.8°E) is used to investigate the structure and evolution of the boundary layer during summertime heatwaves in Victoria. Composite means show that the daytime boundary layer is deeper during heatwaves than at other times, whereas the heatwave boundary layer during the night and early morning is shallower and more stable. A strong northerly nocturnal jet forms slightly below the top of the inversion, presumably transporting hotter air above the boundary layer overnight. A deep mixed layer develops rapidly after sunrise, mixing downward high-momentum air from the nocturnal jet. For heatwaves lasting for 3 days, the nocturnal jet progressively strengthens each night. Heatwaves end in the afternoon or evening following the passage of a strong coastal front and the beginning of postfrontal cold air advection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building automation systems installed in large commercial buildings record sub-hourly measurements from hundreds of sensors. The use of such large datasets are challenging because of missing and erroneous data, which can prevent the development of accurate prediction models of the performance of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment. The use of the transfer learning (TL) method for building applications attracted researchers to solve the problems created by small and incomplete datasets. This paper verifies the hypothesis that the deep neural network models that are pre-trained for one chiller (called the source chiller) with a small dataset of measurements from July 2013 could be applied successfully, by using TL strategies, for the prediction of the operation performance of another chiller (called the target chiller) with different datasets that were recorded during the cooling season of 2016. A challenge has recently been made to the venerable tradition that the passage of Henry VIII's first act for suppressing monasteries (1536) was facilitated by the presentation in parliament of details of monastic sexual misconduct gathered during the royal visitation of the monasteries in 1535–6. This article, by following up clues missed in the evidence cited for that challenge, precisely identifies a now lost source, last sighted in the hands of John Bale, which casts important new light on the visitation and, it is argued, was very probably the exact document presented to parliament in 1536. This article seeks to build on sociologist Jo Littler's notion of the normcore plutocrat, that is, a newly emerging political actor who gains power through performances of ordinariness. We do this by expanding Littler's work through an engagement with Sianne Ngai's aesthetic theory. Taking up Donald Trump's performances as a case study, we attempt to think through the relationship between what Ngai refers to as 'zaniness' and Littler's normcore plutocrat. Given Trump's abnormal and bizarre antics, this article poses the question of what it means to frame his performances as 'ordinary'. In attempting to answer this question, we relocate Ngai's work to an explicitly political register in the attempt to show how Trump's use of language, abysmal business record and faux-masculinity can be understood as revealing something about ordinary neoliberalism. The last two decades have seen two simultaneous shifts in Éliane Radigue's music. One, her music for magnetic tape has become widely available as commercially released CDs and LPs. Two, she has stopped working in electronic media, and concentrated exclusively on composing for instruments and live performers. Commercial recordings, however, were never the intended format for the dissemination of her tape music. This conversation begins with the suggestion that the encounter with Radigue's music mostly through recordings may have created a skewed or problematic image of her work. If recordings render the music as a seemingly uniform and replicable object—obscuring the dynamic processes informing its making—the question arises as to whether this experience might have determined the character of much of the new work for instruments. The new work sometimes seems to function as a smooth sounding surface, evocative of the atmosphere and audible features of the older music, but derived as a purely sonic imitation of Radigue's own laborious, direct-to-tape making process. In a three-way exchange, we will identify the constitutive forces at work in a Radigue piece, especially the involved process of resolving seemingly unresolvable mismatches in acoustics, the attraction to uncontrollable situations and the tendency to make performances highlight exceptions, rather than habits or rules. This paper is an application of Jenkins' model in Saudi corporate. SAPTCO, and Budget Saudi companies are selected from transportation sector to apply Jenkins' model on their reports. The application focuses on the ten elements of Jenkins model in details. The investigated sample suggests that even though Saudi corporate reporting provides lots of information in the board of director report, it still lacks to some elements of Jenkins model which is not required by the Saudi corporate regulations. Standard setters are encouraged to develop a comprehensive model of business reporting by benefit from developed countries' experiences; involving users in the standard-setting process. Companies should study users need to recognize and evaluate ways to improve business reporting. Intensive researches in Saudi corporate reporting are key to keeping pace with evolving needs for information. Venture capitalists (VCs) closely evaluate the track record of entrepreneurs when screening new venture proposals for possible investment. There remains, however, ambiguity about how VCs perceive failure in the entrepreneurial journey. This study unveils how VCs evaluate past entrepreneurial failures. Through a conjoint experiment with 52 VCs, we find that past failures are viewed favorably. Entrepreneurs who failed are evaluated more positively than novices and entrepreneurs who only have a record of success. Education at a top-tier university moderates this relationship and leverages the positive perception of failure. Further, perceptions of entrepreneurs with a top-tiered education who failed are even better when VCs share a similar top-tier education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intrusion into the C–H chemical space of natural products through the strategic deployment of C–H functionalization reactions could lead to incredibly new molecular diversities with an unforeseen impact on biological functions. Based on this hypothesis, semisynthetic C–H modification of natural products is emerging as a minimalist tactic in natural product based drug discovery. Several examples of C–H modification of natural products, resulting in functional gains in key pharmacological attributes viz. potency, aqueous solubility and DMPK profile, along with opportunities in allied areas such as API processing, bioconjugation, and target deconvolution, continue to surface in the recent literature. The strategy has already recorded commercial success in the development of antineoplastic drugs topotecan and irinotecan and in industrial production of pravastatin, calcitriol and artemisinin. This Feature Article highlights the broad contours of this evolving paradigm at the interface of natural product and synthetic chemistry research to accelerate and widen the scope of natural product-based drug discovery.
