Information professionals and librarians have been studying, discussing, and developing digital libraries for more than two decades, but understanding ultimate use of images from digital libraries remains a mystery for many of them. Most articles written on digital library use focus on users’ search retrieval needs and behavior. Few mention how digital library patrons use the images they request. Like many digital libraries, archives, and special collections, the University of Houston Digital Library makes high resolution images available to its patrons. Image delivery is achieved by an automated system, titled the Digital Cart Service. An unexpected benefit of the Digital Cart Service is the reporting mechanism that produces data that includes intended use information. This article discusses the analysis of this data to determine why images were used, what products were created from the images, and what implications this has on digital library management. The authors believe that answering these questions creates an environment in which digital library innovators can better promote and design digital libraries, and describe and select the content in them. There is a noted lack of primary historical documents related to the Prague Spring, one of the key moments in the Cold War, available online. As such, there is a need for an online resource that presents these primary documents in their entirety, allowing researchers and the public to engage with these materials in a user-friendly, open access format. The Prague Spring Archive, a new project at The University of Texas at Austin, fills this gap. This article addresses the development, promotion, and future steps of the project. The article offers information on the relationship between the hospital system and academic health science center library in the U.S. It presents collaborative projects engaged by the library in order to expand the library's consumer health information services. The Consumer Health Librarian has discovered that collaborations with faculty contacts in a variety of community and academic departments offer opportunities for services that the Library would not be able to independently manage.

The article presents a case study of the Mariscal mine archaeology project in Big Bend National Park in Texas, focusing on research into the cultural resource management of the archaeological site for the Historic American Engineering Record. Other topics include information on the history of the mine and description of the buildings there, description of the industrial processes that took place at the mine, and the working and living conditions of the miners and their families.

As primary source materials in the library are digitized and made available online, the focus of related library services is shifting to include new and innovative methods of digital delivery via social media, digital storytelling, and community-based and consortial image repositories. Most images on the Web are not of sufficient quality for most media outlets, so what happens when patrons require high-resolution versions of images for use in their print publications or projects? Until recently, patrons at the University of Houston Libraries used a clunky, paper-based request process for high-resolution images that was frustrating for them and time-consuming for staff. The authors of this article outline how an interdepartmental team of University of Houston Libraries staff used Drupal to develop an automated patron request system that is modeled after online shopping cart experiences and integrates with the CONTENTdm-based University of Houston Digital Library. The article provides suggestions for libraries with digital collections about how to create a system that efficiently captures patron requests and streamlines staff delivery of high-resolution files. Librarians at Texas A&M University's Medical Sciences Library gathered input from 100 patrons about a potential iPad circulation project. Participants were asked to explore an iPad loaded with a sample of resources and to complete a survey. Information collected included (1) patron's profile, (2) preferred iPad check-out period, (3) how the iPad would be used, and (4) preferred applications. Results indicated high patron interest in iPad check-out for supporting classwork, searching the Internet, using apps, and reading e-books. Librarians used results to create an iPad check-out program. User feedback is instrumental to libraries developing services with mobile devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the history of French explorer René Robert Cavelier, sieur de La Salle, known for claiming the Mississippi River basin for France in 1682. Controversy over his role in his failed expedition to find the Mississippi River in East Texas that resulted in a mutiny and an ambush that took his life is examined. Interest in La Salle's Texas explorations was reinvigorated by the discovery of the French ship Belle in Matagorda Bay in 1995. Documents written by La Salle's engineer, Jean-Baptiste Minet, a defector from the Texas expedition, are discussed. An eye-witness account from those who were children in La Salle's colony, describing the massacre that brought its demise, has also surfaced.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe document delivery services between Texas A&M University Libraries (TAMUL) and Texas A&M University at Qatar Library (TAMUQL) from 2003 to 2008. Design/methodology/approach - The paper provides insights into the development of the new service provided by main campus libraries from College Station, Texas to the new branch library in Doha, Qatar. Findings - Document delivery is a popular, accurate, prompt, and well appreciated service for students, faculty, researchers, and staff to obtain needed curriculum and research materials unavailable at TAMUQL due to space limitations. Originality/value - This research provides useful and practical information for administrators and librarians planning to establish document delivery and interlibrary loan services. This article focuses on the library of University of Texas at Austin. The collection supports, to some extent, all aspects of the academic programs, but its primary strengths are in Russian language and literature and Russian and Soviet history, which together comprise well over half of the total number of works. Next in size and scope is the collection in Czech language, literature, and culture. There is also a substantial number of works representing Czech-American culture. Next in size and scope is Polish language and literature, then materials from Yugoslavia and former Yugoslavia. The geology and marine science libraries also have a considerable number of specialized scientific materials in Russian. The rest of the Slavic and East European countries are represented by basic reference works and materials that give a general over-view of their languages, literatures, and cultures. When the collection of vernacular materials relating to the Central Asian areas, which this survey is to include, is also considered, the size of the "Slavic" collection shows an increase of some 7,000 volumes over that which is generally used locally and is given on the Slavic and East EuropeanStudies web page.
