Abstract: Laboratory experiments reveal that room-dried unconsolidated Gulf of Mexico (GOM) shale from the South Eugene Island field exhibits pronounced viscous creep behavior under both hydrostatic pressure and triaxial compressive stress. In all tests, the shale exhibits a lack of creep (and nearly negligible strain recovery) when unloaded, suggesting that the creep strain is best considered as viscoplastic deformation. Following application of a step-change in pressure or stress, creep compaction is considerably more significant than that which occurs instantaneously, indicating that the process of shale compaction is largely dependent on the viscoplastic deformation of the frame. Ultrasonic velocity measurements also demonstrate that the contribution of creep to the evolution of dynamic properties is significantly larger than that associated with incremental loading. Dynamic bulk moduli are similar to static moduli especially at high pressures at which pores and cracks are closed. Interestingly, in the hydrostatic compression tests the creep behavior of the shale is different above and below ~30MPa confining pressure. Above 30MPa, the amount of creep strain that occurs in 6h is approximately constant with equal pressurization steps, indicating a linear viscous rheology. Below 30MPa, the amount of creep increases linearly as pressure is raised in constant incremental steps, indicating a nonlinear viscous rheology. A qualitatively analogous behavior was also observed under differential stress conditions. This article presents an exploratory analysis of the effects of land use regulations on land values and land use patterns in a landscape near Eugene, Oregon. All land use regulations considered in this study, including exclusive farm use zoning, forest zoning, urban growth boundary designation, residential density zoning, commercial zoning, and industrial zoning, are found to affect land values and land use patterns both inside and outside of the designated zones. The framework is applied to measure the costs of the regulations versus the value of individual exemptions at the parcel level to illuminate the controversy surrounding Oregon Measures 37 and 49, which were passed to provide 'just compensation' for 'unfair regulatory burdens.' The cost of regulation is found to be lower than the value of an individual exemption for most regulations contested in the Measure 37 claims. However, governments tend to overregulate from the perspective of landowners. Although some land gained value under the six regulations and some lost value, the aggregate loss of land value was estimated to be several times larger than the gain. This does not necessarily mean that the governments overregulate from the perspective of society because land use regulations also generate public goods such as wildlife habitat and water quality protection. The article introduces the papers and presentations from the 2006 Pacific Northwest Library Association Annual Conference, which took place in August, in Eugene, Oregon. The theme of the conference is highlighted. An overview of the topics discussed in the conference is provided.

The article discusses the highlights of the annual meeting of the Oregon Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) held in Eugene in February 2010. Those who participated in the event were challenged to think about the application of science and management toward achieving successful outcomes for fisheries and aquatic resources. A keynote presentation on the state of fisheries science was delivered by professor Carl Schreck. Among the topics of oral presentations and posters were genetics and morphology.

A course jointly taught with Geography and Computer Science designed the first haptic soundscape map of the University of Oregon campus. An electronic haptic soundscape map is a cartographic representation that is experienced through auditory cues and haptic (dynamic touch) feedback from the hand and fingers. The primary users of this map are blind and visually impaired persons. The goals of this student project was to create a tool that could be easily maintained, accessible at the low cost and flexible enough for update and change after research feedback. This article presents a profile of author Thomas R. Hartd. Hart was born in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1925. He did his bachelor's degree in Spanish and Portuguese from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. Thereafter, Hart became an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University during 1955-1960, and a professor at the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon, till 1990.

University of Oregon in loco parentis policies denied female equal access to the university libary, required female dormitory residents to "be abed" by 11:00. Women accepted these and other campus restrictions until harassment and "groping," practiced under the guise of "tradition." Their entreaties for reform generated little sympathy from university officials, but their response to harassment from "lettermen" inspired them to physically attack the training table of the Rose Bowl-bound football team, overturning tables, hurling food, and then continuing the expression of their ire against the most conspicuous of the harassing fraternities. This raised campus conciousness about gender discrimination and drew two of Oregon's most famous sons, then undergraduates, novelist Ken Kesey and Nike CEO Phil Knight, into the intensifying discourse. The article presents an exploration of the importance of labor unions in successful businesses in the U.S. Originally given at the University of Oregon in 2006, the author summarizes the points illuminated in a presentation for the state legislature correcting perceived misunderstandings regarding labor conditions and practices. The significant impact of union presence in modern economics and business management are highlighted, including elements such as wage rates, working conditions and social networking.

Many libraries, academic institutions, governmental agencies, non-profit and for-profit agencies, and other groups around the world have implemented institutional repositories (IR) in the past few years. The article focuses on a research conducted by Jennifer Marlon at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon and her colleagues on forest fires. Marlon and her team used records of charcoal in sediments from 406 lakes, bogs and small hollows across six continents to reconstruct trends in wildfires. It is noted that the increase in wildfire frequency in the past three decades, which is attributed to global warming, is not represented in the sediment record.
