A composite filler was developed by pre-flocculation of fiber fines and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) particles with flocculants such as cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM) and bentonite. The composite filler was compared with a conventional loading method in terms of physical properties of handsheet and filler retention. The handsheets using the composite filler showed higher strength properties than that using a conventional loading at a similar paper ash content level, implying that paper ash content can be increased maintaining same level of paper strength. Optical properties such as opacity and brightness of the paper with the composite were quite similar with the paper with the conventional loading. Filler retention of the composite filler was slightly higher than that of the conventional loading even though retention aids were not used for the composite filler. Paper formation of the composite filler was better than the case of the conventional loading. However, the sheet with the composite filler showed lower bulk than that with the conventional loading. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using highly filled powders with 100 parts per weight of calcium carbonate and 10 parts per weight of polymer, acting as binder, as electrostatically applied paper coatings. Such powders prepared by different methods were evaluated as being suitable for electrostatic coating. Powders compacted at elevated temperatures demonstrated cohesion superior to that of calcium carbonate, and at best similar to that of aqueous coatings. Cohesion, porosity and thus absorption properties of compacted powders were affected by the powder preparation method, compaction process, and powder composition. Inorganicfillers, the second largest component of the papermakingprocess, have poor bondability with cellulosic fibers, interfere ininterfiber bonding, and reduce paper strength. Filler preflocculation/modificationis a practical method for enhancing interactions between the fillerparticles and fibers. This article reports on the effects of fillercontent and preflocculation on the filler bondability factor calculatedbased on first-pass ash retention and paper strength properties suchas the tensile, Z-direction tensile, and compositetensile indexes. Talc filler preflocculated using 0.1–0.8%dosages of cooked cationic starch based on the dry weight of fillerwas loaded in paper to obtain varying filler contents of 15–24%.The filler bondability factor (FBF) and various tensile propertiesof paper were calculated and analyzed for all experiments. FBF andpaper strength were reduced with increasing filler content in paper,whereas they were improved upon addition of preflocculated fillerin paper. Noticeably, preflocculated filler resulted in increasesin FBF and composite tensile index of 13–24% and 7–15%,respectively, at a 24% filler content in paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is a filler that is widely used for papermaking, and lime sludge is a special type of PCC recovered from the black liquor from kraft pulping. There has been some concern that lime sludge may interfere with the development of paper's hydrophobicity in comparison with commercial PCC and ground calcium carbonate (GCC) due to the presence of impurities when alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) is used as the sizing additive. In this work, fillers with different particle size distributions were prepared, and the effects of particle composition on surface chemistry of fillers, adsorption for AKD, sizing degree of final paper sheets, and retention behavior of fillers were evaluated. The results showed that, through matching different particle size distributions for lime sludge fillers, the negative zeta potential decreased from -26.2 mV to -20.8 mV, the specific surface area decreased from 15.0 m²/g to 9.1 m²/g, and total pore volume decreased from 0.037 cm³/g to 0.026 cm³/g, which was favorable for the low adsorption for AKD. Consequently the sizing effect of filled paper was improved. Moreover, the retention rate also was increased by changing the particle size distribution of lime sludge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inorganic fillers are inexpensive materials used to increase the density, smoothness and other properties of paper that are important for printing. In the current study, the adhesion of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), a common type of adhesive used in labels and tapes, to papers containing varying amounts and types of fillers is investigated. Papers with three types of fillers, precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and kaolin clay, were investigated. The compositions of the papers were examined with SEM/EDX, while peel and double cantilever beam (DCB) tests were used to assess PSA-paper adhesion. The results indicate that fillers enhance the adhesion between PSA and paper. In the case of the peel tests, a combination of inter-fiber bond strength and PSA-paper adhesion determines the peel strength. While in the DCB tests, failure is isolated to the PSA-paper interface, thus allowing measurements of pure interfacial failure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The mechanism of the retention of TiO2 filler particles on cellulose fibers has been under discussion for several decades; the diverse models, and the properties of the components relevant to retention, are critically reviewed in the first part of this study. In addition, two new quantitative models of detachment of polyelectrolyte-bonded colloidal particles from the fiber are also examined; one of these is based on DLVO theory for description of the influence of particle charge and polyelectrolyte amount, and should hold true at low shear rates and high bond strengths. The other model applies Kolmogorov''s theory of isotropic turbulence in order to relate the work necessary for particle detachment to the turbulent energy of pulp in paper machines, i.e., under high shear rate and low bond-strength conditions. The second model is based on analysis of fluid dynamics in paper machines, and is formulated here for laboratory tests using the Dynamic Drainage Jar (DDJ). A series of laboratory-prepared TiO2 fillers covering a range of isoelectric points (ieps) from pH 4.4 to pH 7.5, additionally with poly-(aminoamide)-epichlorohydrin (PAE) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as retention aids, and commercially milled cellulose, were used in the experimental part of the study. The retention-aid demand of fillers and cellulose for surface neutralization was determined using electrokinetic methods. Filler retention on cellulose was measured in the DDJ for various stirrer speeds and amounts of retention aid, with the amount of filler not exceeding that for a monolayer on the fiber. Without retention aids, neutral filler particles are accordingly completely retained on the negative fiber, whereas negatively charged particles are not. The retention of the latter can, however, be steadily improved by increasing polyelectrolyte concentration. Retention of colloidal particles in paper manufacturing is therefore determined by a delicate balance between H-bridging and van der Waals forces, on the one hand, and Coulomb forces, on the other, resolving the long-enduring debate concerning the relative influence of bridging and patch-charge mechanisms. Results obtained using PAE also indicate that polyelectrolytes initially spread over the filler surface are redistributed into the gap between the filler particle and the fiber during filler attachment. In this work, a study concerning the composition of Italian papers from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries was carried out using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS). The analyzed samples consisted of papers employed for drawing, writing, printing, and absorbance. Observations carried out by SEM magnified the typical paper morphology. EDXRF in combination with XRD and SEM-EDS allowed the determination of calcite, gypsum, kaolin, talc, magnesite, and dolomite, used as fillers in the production of the papers studied herein. The inks present in the handwritten and printed papers, investigated by SEM-EDS and μ-EDXRF, were synthetic, Fe based, and iron gall inks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of partial or complete replacement of two commercial fillers, carbon black (CB) and silica on cure characteristics, tensile properties, fatigue life, morphological properties, and rubber-filler interaction of paper sludge (PS) filled natural rubber composites were elucidated. Compounding was carried out on a two-roll mill with total filler loading of 30 phr. Results indicate that maximum torque, tensile strength, elongation at break, tensile modulus, and fatigue life increased the cure time while the scorch time decrease with increasing carbon black loading ratio of PS/CB filled natural rubber composites. On the other hand, increased loading of silica in PS/silica weight ratio resulted in an increment in cure time, scorch time, maximum torque, elongation at break, and fatigue life but not significantly altering tensile strength and tensile modulus of the natural rubber composites. In addition, PS/silica filled natural rubber composites exhibit lower maximum torque, tensile properties, and fatigue life compared to the PS/CB filled natural rubber composites. Rubber-filler interaction and SEM micrograph studies proved that the higher interaction between carbon black and natural rubber occurred in PS/CB filled natural rubber composites rather than PS/silica filled natural rubber composites. The article discusses the morphological analysis of paper images through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The materials are segmented into individual fibers to determine their digital measurements using secondary electron detector. Calcium carbonate particles resulted to the formation of fillers characterized by large amounts of coarse edge fibers and irregular granules. Furthermore, fiber borders with small size width are accidentally identified, however, they represent flat and peak directions.

There is interest in replacing inorganic fillers in paper, coatings and plastics with renewable organic fillers to improve the economics, performance and environmental aspects of such products. Starch microcellular foam (SMCF) particles are promising materials in this regard. This research was undertaken to produce SMCF particles and characterize their morphology, optical properties and interaction with water. SMCF particles were produced using corn starch; which was solubilized in water. The foam structure was created by precipitating the starch using ethanol in a solvent exchange technique. The starch was also reacted with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) wax at different levels in order to understand if the AKD could impart water resistance to the particles. Two methods were used to incorporate AKD: (1) the AKD was coated onto foam particles after foam formation, and (2) the AKD was blended with the starch before foam particle formation. Hexane extraction was used to purify a portion of each of the samples to determine if unreacted AKD existed with the starch matrix. Particles with porous structure and high brightness were developed for all combinations of starch and AKD. The brightness of the particles was significantly higher than that of the uncooked starch, presumably due to the development of a porous structure. For the AKD coated particles a minimum amount of AKD charged was needed to develop a high contact angle, low solubility, and low water retention value, higher levels of AKD in AKD coated particles did not further alter these properties. This indicates that the changes in properties with AKD level with coated particles is a surface phenomena. Starch AKD blends did not show any increased resistance to water relative to the particles with no AKD blended. This is due to the ethanol used in the precipitation process extracting the AKD, which was confirmed by elemental analysis. The particles, even with the 10% AKD coated or blended, lost their porous structure upon rewetting. Further work needs to be performed to more effectively hydrophobize the starch foams with AKD. The basic types of polymer composite materials (PCMM) made from different kinds of reinforcing fibre fillers: short-cut fibres, paper, yarns, tow, sliver, fabrics, and nonwovens, and their properties and use are examined. Information on the fabrication and properties of the different kinds of composites are reported: extruded fibre plastics, getinaxes, textolites, unidirectional composites, honeycomb plastics, and others. New kinds of composites with ultrahigh mechanical and thermal characteristics are also examined. Some of the reported information was previously covered very sparely in the literature. Based on the examination, the features of polymer fibre composites are summarized in comparison to other materials, and they can be summarized as the following basic points: 1) combining different kinds of fibre fillers and matrices (binders) allows fabricating PCM with a wide range of properties by selecting the optimum indexes for articles with a broad spectrum of applications; 2) articles made of fibre PCM are not very materials-intensive and are technologically effective for processing in comparison to many traditional materials, metals and ceramics in particular; 3) with respect to the specific mass characteristics, fibre PCM can be many times superior to articles made of traditional materials—metals, etc., so that the mass (weight) characteristics of articles made of fibre composites can be significantly reduced, which is especially important for using them in vehicles, aircraft, rescue equipment, and sporting goods; 4) articles made of composites have high performance reliability, are almost immune to corrosion, and do not require special protection or periodic painting of the surface. The controlled combustion of paper is normally used to determine the filler content of paper. It can also be a valuable tool, to isolate the mineral particles for extra characterization or additional applications. However, the ashing temperature greatly affects the filler particles. The main goal of this study was to analyze the effects of paper calcinations on the intrinsic properties of precipitated calcium carbonate filler (PCC) at distinct temperatures, from 400°C up to 1000°C. We characterized the size, density, surface area, porosity, chemical composition, color, and electrostatic charge of the original PCC particles and the ash. The experimental results revealed that for a calcination temperature of 400°C, the size, specific surface area, and porosity of the ash are similar to those of the PCC filler before being incorporated in paper. Other important filler properties, such as color and electrical charge, are much different. To overcome this disadvantage, higher ashing temperatures need to be used. This study has demonstrated that 600°C is the optimum temperature for isolating the paper fillers, without the collapse of the PCC structure, so that their physical, chemical, optical, and electrical characteristics are adequately balanced and not too different from those of the original particles. Application: This study demonstrates the effects of thermal treatment on the structure of PCC particles and evaluates the potential of the ashing method to isolate these particles from filled papers.
