An increasing number of entrepreneurs have used crowdfunding to raise funds for their startups. While crowdfunding has attracted many entrepreneurs and investors, serial crowdfunding provides a new way to meet the financing needs of startups at different stages of development. Based on 281 serial crowdfunding projects that have raised funds in three key crowdfunding networks in China, this study investigates the impact of venture investors' monitoring of crowdfunding projects on product innovation performance in the follow-up projects. The results show that venture investors' monitoring of crowdfunding projects has a positive impact on product innovation in the follow-up projects, and the financing performance mediates the relationship between venture investors' monitoring and product innovation. This result can help venture capital better understand the impact of crowdfunding projects on financing performance and further on product innovation in follow-up projects, which will have important practical implications. Contemporary research on entrepreneurship has showed that social capital can improve the success rate of entrepreneurial activities, but focusing too much on social capital can also divert entrepreneurs' attention to certain firm activities such as technological innovation. The purpose of this study is to explore such a paradox in order to better understand the impact of social capital on firms' technological innovation performance in China. The current study explores this paradox with the data from 249 public listed Chinese firms that have received venture capital investment. The results show that both venture capitalists' social ties and entrepreneurs' social ties negatively affect these firms' technological innovation performance, including total patents granted, R&D expenditure, and total factor productivity. In other words, venture capitalists' social ties as well as entrepreneurs' social ties actually impede, rather than facilitate their firms' technological innovation. The results also show that entrepreneurs' social capital mediates the impact of venture capitalists' social capital on technological innovation performance. Employee engagement and commitment has been a very important issue in human resource managers’ agenda. The present study adds to the literature by examining the impact of high‐performance work systems (HPWS) on employee attitudes and on employee engagement in China in response to the increasing interest in the universalistic effects of HPWS in the globalized world market. With the data from 782 employees working in China's manufacturing and service sectors, this study shows that HPWS are positively related to employees’ positive mood and job satisfaction, and that job satisfaction and positive mood lead to high employee engagement. Moreover, employee's positive mood and job satisfaction also mediate the relationship between HPWS and employee engagement. The result helps explore one mechanism via which HPWS affect employee behaviors and provides empirical evidence for the applicability of HPWS in an international context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose Overseas work experiences have played a critical role in venture creation and success, yet the impact of overseas work experience on returnee entrepreneurs’ venture capital funding in the Chinese market remains understudied. This paper aims to explore the impact of returnee entrepreneurs’ overseas experiences on their opportunities of venture capital funding in China to help better understand the potential benefits that overseas work experiences bring to emerging markets.Design/methodology/approach The authors have conducted a two-year inductive field study to explore the impact of overseas experiences on Chinese returnee entrepreneurs’ funding in the Chinese market with in-depth interviews with returnee capital seekers (or the venture founders) and capital providers.Findings The results show that returnee entrepreneurs are more likely to succeed in acquiring financial resources for their new ventures if they skillfully present their overseas work experiences and international networks to manage the impression constructed by capital providers.Originality/value This research sheds light on how returnee entrepreneurs use impression management in external resource acquisition. It is clear that overseas experience has been regarded a symbol of personal capability closely associated with advanced knowledge and valuable human and social capital in the Chinese context. Resource holders appreciate such an association. The authors suggest that returnee entrepreneurs concerned about how to effectively acquire external resources should reflect upon the ways of presenting themselves to potential investors and fostering a positive image that encourages investors to commit to their ventures. Purpose -- This study is to identify key factors that facilitate knowledge sharing in collectivistic cultures and further to help better understand knowledge management in the international context. Design/methodology/approach -- Using a survey method, this study collected data from over 200 managerial employees in knowledge management based project teams from China. Regression analysis was then conducted to analyze the impact of individual differences and environmental factors on the willingness to share knowledge among team members in order to identify key factors for successful knowledge retention in the constantly changing organizational environment in a collectivistic context. Findings -- The results show that incentives are very important in individual's decision to share knowledge in project teams even in a collectivistic culture like China and both intrinsically and extrinsically motivated individuals tend to share more knowledge with their team members. Individuals with high altruism are also found more likely to share knowledge with others. Moreover, a trusting environment and explicit knowledge will facilitate knowledge sharing for better retention. Research limitations/implications -- More studies should be conducted in other collectivistic cultures in order to explore cultural barriers in knowledge management in the international context and comparative studies using samples from different cultural backgrounds are also encouraged to help extend the theories on knowledge management. Originality/value -- While it is well known that knowledge sharing is essential for organization to maintain competitive advantage, relatively few studies have examined knowledge sharing in collectivistic cultures, and even fewer have done so in China. This study adds values to the literature by identifying key factors for knowledge sharing in China and thus helps refine the knowledge management theories and provides insights for multinationals on knowledge management in the Chinese market. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the process of internationalization and its associated risk of marginalization for the emerging Chinese multinationals; also to examine typical strategies emerging Chinese multinationals employ to deal with this challenge in order to provide insights for Chinese firms that are planning to enter the global market. Design/methodology/approach – Using a sample of Chinese multinationals that are listed in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, this study conducts a multiple-case analysis on three different Chinese multinationals to explore their experiences in the process of internationalization and their unique approaches to the risk of marginalization. Findings – The results show that internationalized Chinese firms are strengthening their control over core businesses, designing effective corporate governance policy and adjusting their capital structure to increase their actual control in order to minimize the risk of marginalization accompanying their internationalization process. Originality/value – While an increasing number of Chinese firms are on a fast track of internationalization to enter the global market, the risk of marginalization has become a prominent concern for emerging multinationals and many newly internationalized Chinese firms are faced with a crisis of identity, and consequently they may be marginalized, with the risk of losing control over their own companies and being excluded from major government projects or significant R&D funding opportunities in China. This paper explores Chinese firms' risk of marginalization in their internationalization process and their approaches to dealing with this risk. The paper's findings will provide important insights for Chinese firms that plan to go international and will make an important contribution to the literature and enrich our understanding of Chinese multinationals and their strategic expansion in the era of globalization. Abstract: China''s economy and technology have experienced astounding growth in the last two decades. The OECD 2005 reports show that China has overtaken the USA to become the world''s largest exporter of information and communications technology goods. In order to assess the progress China has made in technology development, this study examines the inventive activities in China and the pattern of international collaborations between China and other major industrialized countries or regions. This study analyzes the patent data from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) focusing on joint patent application between China and the eight most inventive OECD countries and two Asian economic entities (South Korea and Taiwan). The results reveal increasing collaborations in inventive activities between China and other major inventive countries over the past decade, and suggest that China''s technology capability may have begun to boom along with its fast economic growth. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore knowledge sharing in a Chinese context and to examine the impact of some key contextual factors that affect knowledge sharing within project teams in the Chinese construction sector. Design/methodology/approach – Self-administered questionnaires were used in this study. Data were collected by surveying 222 managerial employees from different project teams in the construction sector in China. Regression analysis was then used to explore the relationship between different factors and the willingness to share knowledge. The potential influence of Chinese traditional cultures on this relationship was also explored. Findings – This paper shows that within the Chinese context, explicit knowledge promotes knowledge sharing while tacit knowledge creates barriers to knowledge sharing in project teams. Moreover, trust is positively related to knowledge sharing but justice, leadership style, and empowerment do not influence whether employees will share knowledge among themselves in project teams. Originality/value – While it is well known that knowledge management is critical to success, few studies have examined knowledge management in a Chinese context and little is known how the Chinese generate, codify, and transfer knowledge. This paper tries to bridge this gap by examining what affects knowledge sharing in project teams in China so as to help better understand knowledge management in this important emerging market and whether China can sustain its success in economic growth with effective knowledge management. This study explores personality effects on the endorsement of ethically questionable negotiation strategies in Canada and China. With a sample of over 400 business professionals, this study examines the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and the perceived appropriateness of five categories of negotiation strategies in the two cultures. The results show that the Big Five personality traits strongly affect the endorsement of ethically questionable negotiation strategies (EQNS) both in Canada and in China, but in different ways. For Canadian negotiators, individuals high in conscientiousness, extraversion, and openness are more prone to use EQNS, and individuals high in emotional stability and agreeableness are less likely to use them. For negotiators from Mainland China, only agreeableness and emotional stability are negatively associated with the endorsement of the EQNS. Implications for research on business ethics and for negotiation practitioners and policymakers are then discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
