The co-combustion of sorghum straw and paper-making sludge (PMS) is beneficial to alleviate the ash-related problem in sorghum straw combustion process. In this paper, the mineral migration and transformation behavior in sorghum straw ashes with the addition of PMS ashes under an oxidizing atmosphere were investigated using an X-ray diffractometer, thermogravimetric-derivative thermogravimetric, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray detector, and FactSage software. The results demonstrated that the increase in the PMS ash mass ratio led to an increase in ash fusion temperature (AFT) of sorghum straw mixtures. The generations of high melting-point (MP) calcium feldspar (e.g., Ca 2 MgSi 2 O 7 , Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7 , Ca 3 MgSi 2 O 8 , and Ca 7 Mg (SiO 4) 4) and phosphates (e.g., Ca 3 P 2 O 8 , Ca 5 P 2 SiO 12 , and Ca 7 P 2 Si 2 O 16) caused the increases in the AFT. The maximum weight loss of sorghum straw ashes decreased with the increasing PMS ash mass ratio, and the surface of the ashes underwent the transition from smooth to a whole loose and rough, which alleviated the ash-related problems of sorghum straw. The addition of PMS ashes decreasing the liquid-phase content calculated by FactSage at the same temperature also explained the sorghum straw AFT increase. The combustion of biomass and waste paper sludge in a fluidized bed is ecologically profitable. However, a large amount of by-product with high hydraulic reactivity is produced and is considered as wastes. Most of the time the waste paper fly ash (WPFA) goes to landfills, therefore new utilization methods are necessary. In some countries, the high content of metallic and metalloids trace elements (MMTE) in WPFA, more specifically Barium (Ba) and Lead (Pb) makes its valorization difficult. In this paper, the Lightweight Aggregates (LWA) was produced from WPFA by granulating with water in high-intensity granulator. Since WPFA is rich in CaO, the addition of water promotes rapid setting and hydration compared to other types of ash. In this study, different granulation parameters were investigated, such as the rotation modes between the steel pan and the impeller, the rotation speed of the steel pan, the granulation time, in order to improve the mass percentage of the targeted LWA (2–16 mm). In order to evolve the immobilization potential of Ba and Pb, a carbonation process was performed, exposing the manufactured LWA to pure carbon dioxide (CO 2) gas at laboratory scale. The physical, morphological, thermal and mechanical characterizations were performed on LWA for use in mortars, concretes or civil engineering constructions. Results have demonstrated the influence of the rotation mode between the steel pan and the on the distribution of WPFA inside the steel pan and the change in the growth rate of the granules can be observed. Increased density and improved compressive strength with low porosity and water absorption were also found in LWA after carbonation. This was due to the occurrence of both a carbonation reaction and a hydration reaction. Furthermore, the results of thermogravimetry and SEM-EDS confirmed the formation of hydrated phases (ettringite, carboaluminates), also the formation of calcite in the pores and the external surface of the LWA. Regarding environmental aspects, the results have revealed that Ba and Pb were well immobilized in the solid matrix after carbonation. Levoglucosan is used as a tracer of biomass burning; however, its determination often requires expensive analytical techniques. Therefore, this study describes the development of an inexpensive and useful method using paper-based analytical devices (PADs) to determine levoglucosan based on colorimetric measurements. The color intensities were correlated with the analytical concentrations and presented linear behavior in the range from 0 to 64.8 μg mL−1. The achieved limits of detection and quantification were 2 and 6 μg mL−1, respectively. The conversion rate of levoglucosan into glucose was 81 ± 8% and the average recovery was 105 ± 9%. Moreover, the method presented selectivity for levoglucosan, showing variation in colorimetric signal intensity lower than 8% in the presence of other saccharides (xylose, glucose, galactose, maltose, mannose, arabinose, and fructose). The accuracy of the method was confirmed by comparison with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The proposed method was explored to determine levoglucosan in samples of atmospheric particulate matter collected in Goiania city (Brazil) and the values ranged from 0.08 to 1.10 μg m−3, showing the high impact of the biomass burning to the particulate matter in the region's atmosphere. Global energy consumption is increasing every year, and, despite their many negative impacts, fossil fuels are a major source of energy, but their reserves are gradually depleting. One of the promising but underutilized resources is plant biomass (phytomass). The main problem of plant biomass combustion is the low melting temperature of ash, but there are also problems with corrosion of heat exchangers and clogging of heat-exchanging surfaces. This work is concerned with the production of straw pellets in order to increase the melting temperature of ash by adding an additive. The paper sludge contains substances that can increase the melting point of ash and was therefore added to the pellet samples. This additive was mixed with straw in ratios from 90:10, 80:20 and 70:30 (straw/paper sludge). The use of paper sludge showed positive effects on increasing the melting temperature of the ash samples. The deformation temperature of the ash has already risen from 1020 to 1260 °C after the addition of 10% sludge, which is comparable to wood pellets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Woody and agricultural wastes are important fuels in many countries, and have the potential of being even more important in the future. The main problems of plant biomass combustion are low ash melting temperatures and increased emissions. The most widely used treatment to solve the problem of low ash melting point is blending a fuel with an additive. In this work, pellets were produced from wheat straw containing wood sawdust and paper sludge in the following proportions 40:40:20 and 45:45:10 (straw/sawdust/paper sludge). The purpose of this work was to study the influence of sludge and dendromass on the straw pellet parameters and combustion process. The highest calorific value of 15.71 MJ kg−1 was registered for a sample with a 10% paper sludge concentration. This study investigated an industrial biosludge drying system using hot gases from a coal furnace, seeking to increase the solids content of the biosludge above 50% (w.b.), considered suitable for combustion in biomass boilers. Biosludge was collected from a paper mill activated sludge plant. Biosludge mixtures with eucalyptus chips and eucalyptus bark in two different proportions (15% and 25%) were placed into a drying chamber. Hot gases generated by the furnace, with a flowrate of 0.64 ± 0.02 m3 s−1 at 100 ± 20°C, were applied to the piles through a blowing system. The results demonstrated that the 75% biosludge/25% eucalyptus bark mixture achieved the best drying ratio, increasing the total solids content from 31% to 72%, over a 5-h drying period. Nevertheless, all other treatments involving the addition of a bulking agent achieved solids content above 50%, confirming the positive effect of adding dried material to the sludge. Open burning of household solid waste is a large source of air pollutants worldwide, especially in developing countries. However, waste burning emissions are either missing or have large uncertainties in local, regional, or global emission inventories due to limited emission factor (EF) and activity data. Detailed particulate matter (PM) chemical speciation data is even scarcer. This paper reports source profiles and EFs for PM2.5 species as well as acidic and alkali gases measured from laboratory combustion of ten waste categories that represent open burning in South Africa. Carbonaceous materials contributed more than 70 % of PM2.5 mass. Elemental carbon (EC) was most abundant from flaming materials (e.g., plastic bags, textile, and combined materials) and its climate forcing exceeded the corresponding CO2 emissions by a factor of 2–5. Chlorine had the highest EFs among elements measured by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for all materials; vegetation emissions showed high abundances of potassium, consistent with its use as a marker for biomass burning. Fresh PM2.5 emitted from waste burning appeared to be acidic. Moist vegetation and food discards had the highest hydrogen fluoride (HF) and PM fluoride EFs due to fluorine accumulation in plants, while burning rubber had the highest hydrogen chloride (HCl) and PM chloride EFs due to high chlorine content in the rubber. Plastic bottles and bags, rubber, and food discards had the highest EFs for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs as well as their associated toxicities. Distinct differences between odd and even carbon preferences were found for alkanes from biological and petroleum-based materials: dry vegetation, paper, textile, and food discards show preference for the odd-numbered alkanes, while the opposite is true for plastic bottles, bags, and rubber. As phthalates are used as plasticizers, their highest EFs were found for plastic bottles and bags, rubber, and combined materials. Data from this study will be useful for health and climate impact assessments, speciated emission inventories, source-oriented dispersion models, and receptor-based source apportionment. Savanna fires contribute approximately 40-50% of total global annual biomass burning carbon emissions. Recent comparisons of emission factors from different savanna regions have highlighted the need for a regional approach to emission factor development, and better assessment of the drivers of the temporal and spatial variation in emission factors. This paper describes the results of open-path Fourier Transform Infrared (OP-FTIR) spectroscopic field measurements at twenty-one fires occurring in the tropical savannas of the Northern Territory, Australia, within different vegetation assemblages and at different stages of the dry season. Spectra of infrared light passing through a long (22-70m) open-path through ground-level smoke released from these fires were collected using an infrared lamp and a field-portable FTIR system. The IR spectra were used to retrieve the mole fractions of fourteen different gases present within the smoke, and these measurements used to calculate the emission ratios and emission factors of the various gases emitted by the burning. Only a handful of previous emission factor measures are available specifically for the tropical savannas of Australia and here we present the first reported emission factors for methanol, acetic acid, and formic acid for this biome. Given the relatively large sample size, it was possible to study the potential causes of the within-biome variation of the derived emission factors. We find that the emission factors vary substantially between different savanna vegetation assemblages; with a majority of this variation being mirrored by variations in the modified combustion efficiency (MCE) of different vegetation classes. We conclude that a significant majority of the variation in the emission factor for trace gases can be explained by MCE, irrespective of vegetation class, as illustrated by variations in the calculated methane emission factor for different vegetation classes using data subsetted by different combustion efficiencies. Therefore, the selection of emission factors for emissions modelling purposes need not necessarily require detailed fuel type information, if data on MCE (e.g. from future spaceborne total column measurements) or a correlated variable were available. From measurements at twenty-one fires, we recommend the following emission factors for Australian tropical savanna fires (in grams of gas emitted per kilogram of dry fuel burned) which are our mean measured values: 1674 gkg-1 of carbon dioxide; 87 gkg-1 of carbon monoxide; 2.1 gkg-1 of methane; 0.11 gkg-1 of acetylene; 0.49 gkg-1 of ethylene; 0.08 gkg-1 of ethane; 1.57 gkg-1 of formaldehyde; 1.06 gkg-1 5 of methanol; 1.54 gkg-1 of acetic acid; 0.16 gkg-1 of formic acid; 0.53 gkg-1 of hydrogen cyanide; and 0.70 gkg-1 of ammonia. Biomass burning releases trace gases and aerosol particles that significantly affect the composition and chemistry of the atmosphere. Australia contributes approximately 8% of gross global carbon emissions from biomass burning, yet there are few previous measurements of emissions from Australian forest fires available in the literature. This paper describes the results of field measurements of trace gases emitted during hazard reduction burns in Australian temperate forests using open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In a companion paper, similar techniques are used to characterise the emissions from hazard reduction burns in the savanna regions of the Northern Territory. Details of the experimental methods are explained, including both the measurement set-up and the analysis techniques employed. The advantages and disadvantages of different ways to estimate whole-fire emission factors are discussed and a measurement uncertainty budget is developed. Emission factors for Australian temperate forest fires are given for the first time for many trace gases. We recommend the following emission factors for Australian temperate forest fires (in grams of gas emitted per kilogram of dry fuel burned) which are our mean measured values: 1620 gkg-1 of carbon dioxide; 118 gkg-1 of carbon monoxide; 3.5 gkg-1 of methane; 1.3 gkg-1 of ethylene; 1.7 gkg-1 of formaldehyde; 2.4 gkg-1 of methanol; 3.8 gkg-1 of acetic acid; 0.4 gkg-1 of formic acid; 1.7 gkg-1 of ammonia; 0.15 gkg-1 of nitrous oxide and 0.5 gkg-1 of ethane. This paper deals with incorporating thermoelectric generators into wood-fired stove to enhance energy efficiency and explore sustainable heating solutions. Wood-fired stoves are essential solutions for heating and cooking, but their conventional design poses environmental impact and efficiency challenges. By utilizing thermoelectric generators to capture waste heat, this research aims to elevate the overall performance of wood-fired stoves, reduce emissions, and optimize energy conversion. Through comprehensive experimental data and analysis, the study sheds light on the potential of thermoelectric generator integration, even in manually operated wood-fired stoves. The research stages outlined in the paper focus on selecting the most favorable conditions for thermoelectric generator installation, revealing that thermoelectric generators' highest power generation efficacy reached around 42% in a stove without an accumulation layer and slightly exceeded 30% in a stove with an accumulation layer. The quality of space-based nitrogen dioxide (NO2) retrievals from solar backscatter depends on a priori knowledge of the vertical profiles of NO2 and aerosol optical properties. This information is contained in an air mass factor (AMF), which accounts for at- mospheric scattering and is used to convert the measured line-of-sight “slant” columns into vertical columns. In this study we investigate the impact of biomass burning emissions on the AMF in order to quantify NO2 retrieval errors in the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) products over these sources. Sensitivity analyses are conducted using the Linearized Discrete Ordinate Radiative Transfer (LIDORT) model and the GEOS Chem chemistry-transport model with an improved daily biomass burning emission inventory. Aircraft in situ data collected during two field campaigns, Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites (ARCTAS) and Dust and Biomass-burning Experiment (DABEX), are used to evaluate the modeled aerosol optical properties and NO2 profiles over Canadian boreal fires and western Africa savanna fires respectively. Biomass burning aerosols increase the AMF by 3 to 15% over boreal fires, while they decrease the AMF by −10 to −30% over savanna fires. The presence of an elevated aerosol layer over west Africa due to the Harmattan front explains the negative aerosol effect over this area. The impact of fires on the AMF is driven by the NO2 shape profile perturbations, which decrease the AMF by −10 to −60% over both regions. Aerosol and shape factor effects are most sensitive to surface reflectance and clouds. In particular, retrieval errors associated with shape factor uncertainties can increase by a factor of 2 due to the presence of clouds. In contrast with conclusions from previous studies, we demonstrate that in the presence of pre-existing clouds, the effect of aerosols on the AMF cannot be fully accounted for through the modified retrieved cloud parameters. The article focuses on a study which aims at comparing differences in aerosol optical depth (AOD) measured by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). In the study, AOD levels are evaluated in the dust regions of the Sahara and northwest China and biomass burning regions of South America and South Africa. It reveals higher MODIS AOD over dust regions as compared to CALIPSO AOD.

In recent years, there has been considerable focus on ensuring that energy is used in the most efficient manner possible. This is due to the fact that globally, over 70% of energy is generated from fossil fuels. Consequently, the matter of designing and utilizing materials that will negate energy losses within the construction industry is of paramount importance. Simultaneously, the necessity for a sustainable approach to the design and production of materials is strongly emphasized. This paper presents an innovative approach to the use of a combination of mineral and plant-based fillers in polyurethane foam technology as a thermal insulation material with the potential to be used in construction to reduce energy consumption. Polyurethane composites containing fly ash from biomass combustion and the addition of rice, sunflower, and buckwheat husks as plant fillers were proposed. The structure of the obtained materials was studied, and the most important physical properties were analyzed. These included apparent density, dimensional stability, water absorption, and the effects of UV radiation and water influence on the carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen content. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the materials were investigated, including compressive strength and brittleness. Additionally, the foams were subjected to flammability tests using a cone calorimeter. Furthermore, additional parameters were determined, including the limiting oxygen index and the vertical and horizontal flammability tests. During biomass combustion in a grate-fired boiler, each particle undergoes a sequence of different reactions, and the phenomena differ from the conversion of a single, thermally thin, particle. Hence, this paper aims to deepen the understanding of biomass conversion processes and provides valuable insights for advancing biomass-based energy systems. Firstly, the weight loss characteristics of the larger particles of eucalyptus, pine, acacia, and olive samples were investigated at different isothermal temperatures in a purpose-built reactor that simulates the devolatilization process in a controllable manner. As opposed to the thermogravimetric analysis using thermally thin particles, it was concluded that all fuels show that the combustion of large particles does not exhibit separate consecutive conversion stages, due to internal diffusion resistance. Furthermore, it was verified that the devolatilization rate depends mainly on the reactor temperature, and, consequently, the mass-loss profile is independent of the biomass type. In addition to these experiments, the composition of the gases over the devolatilization period was analyzed for the main fuel used in power plants, eucalyptus. Once again, a strong correlation to the reactor temperature was observed, with CO2 and CO always being the main devolatilization products. The temperature dependence of both compounds presented an increase from 8 to 13% between 600 and 800 °C for CO, while the CO2 yield only slightly increased from 11 to 12%. As an emerging environmentally friendly fuel, biodiesel has excellent fuel properties comparable to those of petrochemical diesel. Oleic acid methyl ester, as the main component of biodiesel, has the characteristics of high cetane number and low emission rate of harmful gases. However, the comprehensive chemical conversion pathway of oleic acid methyl ester is not clear. In this paper, the reactive force field molecular dynamics simulation (ReaxFF-MD) method is used to construct a model of oleic acid methyl ester pyrolysis and combustion system. Further, the chemical conversion kinetics process at high temperatures (2500 K–3500 K) was studied, and a chemical reaction network was drawn. The research results show that the density of the system has almost no effect on the decomposition activation energy of oleic acid methyl ester, and the activation energies of its pyrolysis and combustion processes are 190.02 kJ/mol and 144.89 kJ/mol, respectively. Ethylene, water and carbon dioxide are the dominant and most accumulated products. From the specific reaction mechanism, the main pyrolysis path of oleic acid methyl ester is the breakage of the C-C bond to produce small molecule intermediates, and subsequent transformation of the ester group radical into carbon oxides. The combustion path is the evolution of long-chain alkanes into short-carbon-chain gaseous products, and these species are further burned to form stable CO2 and H2O. This study further discusses the microscopic combustion kinetics of biodiesel, providing a reference for the construction of biodiesel combustion models. Ion chromatography and related techniques have been the most popular separation methods used in the determination of organic and inorganic anions and cations, predominantly in water and wastewater samples. Making progress in their development and introducing new stationary phases, methods of detection and preparation of samples for analyses have given rise to the broadening of their analytical range. Nowadays, they are also used for substances that are not ionic by nature but can convert to such forms under certain conditions. These encompass, among others, carbohydrates, whose role and significance in humans' lives and environment is invaluable. Their presence in the air is mostly due to the industrial burning of biomass for energy production purposes. In addition, the content of sugars in plants, fruits and vegetables, constituting the base of human diets, affects our health condition. Given that, there is not only a need for their determination by means of routine methods but also for searching for novel analytical solutions. Based on literature data from the past decade, this paper presents the possibilities and examples of applications regarding ion chromatography and related techniques for the determination of carbohydrates in environmental samples, biomass and plants constituting food or raw materials for food production. The assumptions of contemporary energy policies are increasing the share of renewable energy sources. Biomass combustion is developing as an alternative to fossil fuels. However, it faces challenges such as limited corrosion resistance of steel boiler components due to chloride compounds in flue gases and fly ash. This paper provides a comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of chloride-induced corrosion in steel in the Fe-O-Cl-Na environment, focusing on the influence of steam concentration in the gas phase. The study was performed by using the general thermodynamic rules, the thermodynamic properties of the pure components involved in the reaction, and the properties of the solutions formed in the liquid and gas phases. The study also examined the impact of alkali metal chlorides, particularly NaCl, on the formation of NaFeO2 in the passive oxide scale layer Fe3O4/Fe2O3. Furthermore, it investigated the condensation of NaCl vapour formation of low-melting eutectic mixtures in deposits and the resulting consequences on the corrosion process. The role of HCl in the chlorination and oxidation process of steel in melted ash deposits was also discussed. The presented thermodynamic analysis was compared with assumptions of an "active oxidation" model. This paper includes a discussion of the results of tests concerning changes in the thermal and emission parameters of a boiler fuelled with wood biomass under the influence of air gradation in the combustion process. The test results ensure insight into the combustion process of wood biomass with air gradation, which significantly affected the operation of the device, increasing the mass concentration of the emitted nitrogen oxide (NOx) by combustion temperature lowering, especially in the afterburning zone. The authors observed an increase in the emission of particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO) related to the change in the combustion process stoichiometry. The tests were carried out with the use of a heating boiler equipped with an automatic pellet burner. Apart from the mass concentration measurement of the pollution emitted, the tests focused on the measurements of temperature and oxygen levels in the flue gas. The objective of the tests was to confirm the applicability of the air gradation techniques in biomass combustion in order to reduce the emission of harmful substances from heating boilers, which is a technique that has recently been used in this group of devices. We present a full-mission data product of carbon monoxide (CO) vertical column densities using the 2310-2338nm SCIAMACHY reflectance measurements over clear sky land scenes for the period January 2003-April 2012. The retrieval employs the SICOR algorithm, which will be used for operational data processing of the Sentinel-5 Precursor mission, combined with a SCIAMACHY specific radiometric soft-calibration to mitigate instrumental issues. The retrieval approach infers simultaneously carbon monoxide, methane and water vapour column densities together with a Lambertian surface albedo from individual SCIAMACHY measurements employing a non-scattering radia tive transfer model. To account for the radiometric instrument degradation including the formation of an ice-layer on the 2.3 μm detector-array, we consider clear sky measurements over the Sahara as a natural calibration target. For these specific measurements, we spectrally calibrate the SCIAMACHY measurements and determine a spectral radiometric offset and the width of the instrument spectral response function as a func tion of time for the entire operational phase of the mission. We show that the smoothing error of individual clear sky CO retrievals is less than ±1 ppb and thus this error contribution has not to be accounted for in the validation considering the much higher retrieval noise. The CO data product is validated against measurements of groundbased Fourier transform infrared spectrometers at 27 stations of the NDACC-IRWG and TCCON network and MOZAIC/IAGOS aircraft measurements at 26 airports worldwide. Overall, we find a good agreement with TCCON measurements with a mean bias b = -1.2 ppb and a station-to-station bias with σ = 7.2 ppb. For the NDACC-IRWG network, we obtain a larger mean station bias of b = -9.2 ppb with σ = 8.1 ppb and for the MOZAIC/IAGOS measurements we find b = -6.4 ppb with σ = 5.6 ppb. The SCIA MACHY data set is subject to a small but significant trend of 1.47±0.25 ppbyr-1. After trend correction, the bias with respect to MOZAIC/IAGOS observation is 2.5 ppb, with respect to TCCON measurements it is -4.6 ppb and with respect to NDACCIRWG measurements -8.4 ppb. Hence, a discrepancy of 3.8 ppb remains between the global biases with NDACC-IRWG and TCCON, which is confirmed by directly comparing NDACC-IRWG and TCCON measurements. Generally, the scatter of the individual SCIAMACHY CO retrievals is high and dominated by large measurement noise. Hence, for practical usage of the dataset, averaging of individual retrievals is required. As an example, we show that monthly mean SCIAMACHY CO retrievals, averaged separately over Northern and Southern Africa, reflect the spatial and temporal variability of biomass burning events in agreement with the global chemical transport model TM5. In early spring the Baltic region is frequently affected by high pollution events due to biomass burning in that area. Here we present a comprehensive study to investigate the impact of biomass/grass burning (BB) on the evolution and composition of aerosol in Preila, Lithuania, during springtime open fires. Non-refractory submicron particulate matter (NR-PM1) was measured by an Aerodyne aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) and a source apportionment with the multilinear engine (ME-2) running the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to the organic aerosol fraction to investigate the impact of biomass/grass burning. Satellite observations over regions of biomass burning activity supported the results and identification of air mass transport to the area of investigation. Sharp increases in biomass burning tracers, such as levoglucosan up to 683 ngm-3 and black carbon (BC) up to 17 μgm-3 were observed during this period. A further separation between fossil and non-fossil primary and secondary contributions was obtained by coupling ACSM PMF results and radiocarbon (14C) measurements of the elemental (EC) and organic (OC) carbon fractions. Non-fossil organic carbon (OCnf) was the dominant fraction of PM1, with the primary (POCnf) and secondary (SOCnf) fractions contributing 26-44% and 13-23% to the TC, respectively. 5-8% of the TC had a primary fossil origin (POCf), whereas the contribution of fossil secondary organic carbon (SOCf) was 4-13 %. Non-fossil EC (ECnf) and fossil EC (ECf) ranged from 13-24% and 7-12%, respectively. Methane is the second-most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide and accounts for around 10 % of total European Union greenhouse gas emissions. Given that the atmospheric methane budget over a region depends on its terrestrial and aquatic methane sources, inverse modelling techniques appear as powerful tools for identifying critical areas that can later be submitted to emission mitigation strategies. In this regard, an inverse modelling system of methane emissions for Europe is being implemented based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model: the Aarhus University Methane Inversion Algorithm (AUMIA) v1.0. The forward modelling component of AUMIA consists of the WRF model coupled to a multipurpose global database of methane anthropogenic emissions. To assure transport consistency during the inversion process, the backward modelling component will be based on the WRF model coupled to a Lagrangian particle dispersion module. A description of the modelling tools, input data sets, and 1-year forward modelling evaluation from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019 is provided in this paper. The a posteriori methane emission estimates, including a more focused inverse modelling for Denmark, will be provided in a second paper. A good general agreement is found between the modelling results and observations based on the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) onboard the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite. Model–observation discrepancies for the summer peak season are in line with previous studies conducted over urban areas in central Europe, with relative differences between simulated concentrations and observational data in this study ranging from 1 % to 2 %. Domain-wide correlation coefficients and root-mean-square errors for summer months ranged from 0.4 to 0.5 and from 27 to 30 ppb, respectively. On the other hand, model–observation discrepancies for winter months show a significant overestimation of anthropogenic emissions over the study region, with relative differences ranging from 2 % to 3 %. Domain-wide correlation coefficients and root-mean-square errors in this case ranged from 0.1 to 0.4 and from 33 to 50 ppb, respectively, indicating that a more refined inverse analysis assessment will be required for this season. According to modelling results, the methane enhancement above the background concentrations came almost entirely from anthropogenic sources; however, these sources contributed with only up to 2 % to the methane total-column concentration. Contributions from natural sources (wetlands and termites) and biomass burning were not relevant during the study period. The results found in this study contribute with a new model evaluation of methane concentrations over Europe and demonstrate a huge potential for methane inverse modelling using improved TROPOMI products in large-scale applications. The incidence of wildfires in the Arctic and subarctic is increasing; in boreal North America, for example, the burned area is expected to increase by 200-300% over the next 50-100 years, which previous studies suggest could have a large effect on cloud microphysics, lifetime, albedo, and precipitation. However, the interactions between smoke particles and clouds remain poorly quantified due to confounding meteorological influences and remote sensing limitations. Here, we use data from several aircraft campaigns in the Arctic and subarctic to explore cloud microphysics in liquid-phase clouds influenced by biomass burning. Median cloud droplet radii in smoky clouds were ~50% smaller than in background clouds. Based on the relationship between cloud droplet number (Nliq) and various biomass burning tracers (BBt) across the multi-campaign dataset, we calculated the magnitude of subarctic and Arctic smoke aerosol-cloud interactions (ACI, where ACI= (1/3)×dln(Nliq)/dln(BBt)) to be ~0.12 out of a maximum possible value of 0.33 that would be obtained if all aerosols were to nucleate cloud 15 droplets. Interestingly, in a separate subarctic case study with low liquid water content (~0.02 gm-3) and very high aerosol concentrations (2000-3000 cm-3) in the most polluted clouds, the estimated ACI value was only 0.06. In this case, competition for water vapor by the high concentration of CCN strongly limited the formation of droplets and reduced the cloud albedo effect, which highlights the importance of cloud feedbacks across scales. Using our calculated ACI values, we estimate that the smoke-driven cloud albedo effect may decrease shortwave radiative flux by 2-4Wm-2 or more under some low and homogeneous cloud cover conditions in the subarctic, although the changes should be smaller in high surface albedo regions of the Arctic. We lastly show evidence to suggest that numerous northern latitude background Aitken particles can interact with combustion particles, perhaps impacting their properties as cloud condensation and ice nuclei. In this paper measurements are presented of the observed properties of aerosols and microphysics of clouds associated with the characteristics of precipitation in convective clouds that formed off the east coast of Barbados during EUREC4A. Most data were gathered by the instrumented British Antarctic Survey Twin Otter aircraft supported by detailed in-situ aerosol measurements at the Ragged Point observatory on Barbados as well as HALO and PoldiRad radars, dropsonde and satellite data. The development of precipitation was studied in the three aerosol regimes previously reported, i.e. one low aerosol regime and two containing desert dust that had been advected across the Atlantic Ocean. The later dust event also contained evidence of biomass burning aerosol. Results showed that the maximum intensity of rain was similar for all the aerosol regimes. Clouds that developed in an environment with high aerosol loading tended to be deeper than those that developed in the clean environment. The characteristics of South American biomass burning (BB) aerosols transported over northern and central Argentina were investigated from July to December 2019. This period was chosen due to the high aerosol optical depth values found in the region and because simultaneously intensive biomass burning took place over the Amazon. More specifically, a combination of remote sensing observations with simulated air parcel back trajectories was used to link the optical and physical properties of three BB aerosol events that affected Pilar Observatory (PO, Argentina, 31°41′S, 63°53′W, 338 m above sea level), with low-level atmospheric circulation patterns and with types of vegetation burned in specific fire regions. The lidar observations at the PO site were used for the first time to characterize the vertical extent and structure of BB aerosol plumes as well as their connection with the planetary boundary layer, and dust particles. Based mainly on the air-parcel trajectories, a local transport regime and a long transport regime were identified. We found that in all the BB aerosol event cases studied in this paper, light-absorbing fine-mode aerosols were detected, resulting mainly from a mixture of aging smoke and dust particles. In the remote transport regime, the main sources of the BB aerosols reaching PO were associated with Amazonian rainforest wildfires. These aerosols were transported into northern and central Argentina within a strong low-level jet circulation. During the local transport regime, the BB aerosols were linked with closer fires related to tropical forests, cropland, grassland, and scrub/shrubland vegetation types in southeastern South America. Moreover, aerosols carried by the remote transport regime were associated with a high aerosol loading and enhanced aging and relatively smaller particle sizes, while aerosols associated with the local transport pattern were consistently less affected by the aging effect and showed larger sizes and low aerosol loading. Brown carbon (BrC) is an absorbing organic aerosol (OA), primarily emitted through biomass burning (BB), which exhibits light absorption unique to both black carbon (BC) and other organic aerosols. Despite many field and laboratory studies seeking to constrain BrC properties, the radiative forcing (RF) of BrC is still highly uncertain. To better understand its climate impact, we introduced BrC to the One-Moment Aerosol (OMA) module of the GISS ModelE Earth system model (ESM). We assessed ModelE sensitivity to primary BrC processed through a novel chemical aging scheme and to secondary BrC formed from biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Initial results show that BrC typically contributes a top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) radiative effect of 0.04 Wm-2. Sensitivity tests indicate that explicitly simulating BrC (separating it from other OAs), including secondary BrC, and simulating chemical bleaching of BrC contribute distinguishable radiative effects and should be accounted for in BrC schemes. This addition of prognostic BrC to ModelE allows greater physical and chemical complexity in OA representation with no apparent trade-off in model performance, as the evaluation of ModelE aerosol optical depth against Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) retrieval data, with and without the BrC scheme, reveals similar skill in both cases. Thus, BrC should be explicitly simulated to allow more physically based chemical composition, which is crucial for more detailed OA studies like comparisons to in situ measurement campaigns. Source apportionment using the bilinear model through the multilinear engine (ME-2) was successfully applied to non-refractory organic aerosol (OA) mass spectra collected during winter 2011 and 2012 in Zurich, Switzerland using the aerosol chemical speciation monitor ACSM. Five factors were identified: low-volatility oxygenated OA (LV-OOA), semivolatile oxygenated OA (SV-OOA), hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), cooking OA (COA) and biomass burning OA (BBOA). A graphical user interface SoFi (Source Finder) was developed at PSI in order to facilitate the testing of different rotational techniques available within the ME-2 engine by providing a priori factor profiles for some or all of the expected factors. ME-2 was used to test the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, the fully constrained chemical mass balance (CMB) model, and partially constrained models utilizing a values and pulling equations. Within the set of model solutions determined to be environmentally reasonable, BBOA and SV-OOA factor mass spectra and time series showed the greatest variability. This variability represents uncertainty in the model solution and indicates that analysis of model rotations provides a useful approach for assessing the uncertainty of bilinear source apportionment models. The article presents a study on the extensive measurements of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and acetylene (C2H2) total columns at Reunion Island and Jungfraujoch in 2009-2010. The study involved observations from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) using local ground-based Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) measurements. Furthermore, a nonspecific biomass burning plume over austral Africa is discussed.

Climate controls fire regimes through its influence on the amount and types of fuel present and their dryness; CO2 availability, in turn, constrains primary production by limiting photosynthetic activity in plants. However, although fuel accumulation depends on biomass production, and hence CO2 availability, the links between atmospheric CO2 and biomass burning are not well known. Here a fire-enabled dynamic global vegetation model (the Land surface Processes and eXchanges model, LPX) is used to attribute glacial-interglacial changes in biomass burning to CO2 increase, which would be expected to increase primary production and therefore fuel loads even in the absence of climate change, vs. climate change effects. Four general circulation models provided Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) climate anomalies -- that is, differences from the pre-industrial (PI) control climate -- from the Palaeoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase 2, allowing the construction of four scenarios for LGM climate. Modelled carbon fluxes in biomass burning were corrected for the model's observed biases in contemporary biome-average values. With LGM climate and low CO2 (185 ppm) effects included, the modelled global flux was 70 to 80% lower at the LGM than in PI time. LGM climate with pre-industrial CO2 (280 ppm) however yielded unrealistic results, with global and Northern Hemisphere biomass burning fluxes greater than in the pre-industrial climate. Using the PI CO2 concentration increased the modelled LGM biomass burning fluxes for all climate models and latitudinal bands to between four and ten times their values under LGM CO2 concentration. It is inferred that a substantial part of the increase in biomass burning after the LGM must be attributed to the effect of increasing CO2 concentration on productivity and fuel load. Today, by analogy, both rising CO2 and global warming must be considered as risk factors for increasing biomass burning. Both effects need to be included in models to project future fire risks. To utilize various types of biomass as raw materials for briquette fuel, the influence of raw material on combustion behavior should be clarified. This study aimed to confirm the influence of biomass raw materials on flaming and char combustion, particularly on the duration of combustion. Cypress, bamboo, rice husk, and paper were used as raw materials for the briquettes. Several sizes of briquettes were burned in a hot airflow setup, and the mass loss (for individual samples) and the durations of flaming and char combustion were obtained. It was found that the duration of flaming combustion for each raw material is proportional to the product of the inverse square of the specific surface area and briquette density. It is suggested that these proportional constants are correlated with the mass percentage of holocellulose in the biomass, which is estimated via ultimate analysis. However, the duration of char combustion for each biomass raw material is almost proportional to the product of the inverse square of the specific surface area and the fixed carbon content of the briquette. It is suggested that these proportional constants are correlated with the mass percentage of ash content in the biomass. Thus, in our study, we were able to predict the combustion characteristics of briquettes made from various raw materials individually. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From a passive satellite remote sensing point of view, the richest set of information on aerosol properties can be obtained from instruments that measure both intensity and polarization of backscattered sunlight at multiple wavelengths and multiple viewing angles for one ground pixel. However, it is challenging to exploit this information at a global scale because complex algorithms are needed with many fit parameters (aerosol and land/ocean reflection), based on online radiative transfer models. So far, two such algorithms have demonstrated this capability at a global scale: the Generalized Retrieval of Atmosphere and Surface Properties (GRASP) algorithm and the Remote sensing of Trace gas and Aerosol Products (RemoTAP) algorithm. In this paper, we present a detailed comparison of the most recent versions of RemoTAP and GRASP. We evaluate both algorithms for synthetic observations, for real PARASOL (Polarization and Anisotropy of Reflectances for Atmospheric Science coupled with Observations from a Lidar) observations against AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) for common pixels, and for global PARASOL retrievals for the year 2008. For the aerosol optical depth (AOD) over land, both algorithms show a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.10 (at 550 nm). For single scattering albedo (SSA), both algorithms show a good performance in terms of RMSE (0.04), but RemoTAP has a smaller bias (0.002) compared to GRASP (0.021). For the Ångström exponent (AE), GRASP has a smaller RMSE (0.367) than RemoTAP (0.387), mainly caused by a small overestimate of AE at low values (large particles). Over ocean both algorithms perform very well. For AOD, RemoTAP has an RMSE of 0.057 and GRASP an even smaller RMSE of 0.047. For AE, the RMSEs of RemoTAP and GRASP are 0.285 and 0.224, respectively. Based on the AERONET comparison, we conclude that both algorithms show very similar overall performance, where both algorithms have stronger and weaker points. For the global data products, we find a root mean square difference (RMSD) between RemoTAP and GRASP AOD of 0.12 and 0.038 over land and ocean, respectively. The largest differences occur over the biomass burning region in equatorial Africa. The global mean values are virtually unbiased with respect to each other. For AE the RMSD between RemoTAP and GRASP is 0.33 over land and 0.23 over ocean. For SSA, we find much better agreement over land (bias = - 0.01, RMSD = 0.043 for retrievals with AOD > 0.2) than over ocean (bias = 0.053, RMSD = 0.074). As expected, the differences increase towards low AOD, over both land and ocean. We also compared the GRASP and RemoTAP AOD and AE products against MODIS. For AOD over land, the agreement of either GRASP or RemoTAP with MODIS is worse than the agreement between the two PARASOL algorithms themselves. Over ocean, the agreement is very similar among the three products for AOD. For AE, the agreement between GRASP and RemoTAP is much better than the agreement of both products with MODIS. The agreement of the latest product versions with each other and with AERONET improved significantly compared to the previous version of the global products of GRASP and RemoTAP. The results demonstrate that the dedicated effort in algorithm development for multi-angle polarimetric (MAP) aerosol retrievals still leads to substantial improvement of the resulting aerosol products, and this is still an ongoing process. Despite significant improvements in air quality during and after COVID-19 restrictions, haze continued to occur in Zhengzhou afterwards. This paper compares ionic compositions and sources of PM2.5 before (2019), during (2020), and after (2021) the restrictions to explore the reasons for the haze. The average concentration of PM2.5 decreased by 28.5% in 2020 and 27.9% in 2021, respectively, from 102.49 μg m−3 in 2019. The concentration of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) was 51.87 μg m−3 in 2019, which decreased by 3.1% in 2020 and 12.8% in 2021. In contrast, the contributions of SIAs to PM2.5 increased from 50.61% (2019) to 68.6% (2020) and 61.2% (2021). SIAs contributed significantly to PM2.5 levels in 2020–2021. Despite a 22~62% decline in NOx levels in 2020–2021, the increased O3 caused a similar NO3− concentration (20.69~23.00 μg m−3) in 2020–2021 to that (22.93 μg m−3) in 2019, hindering PM2.5 reduction in Zhengzhou. Six PM2.5 sources, including secondary inorganic aerosols, industrial emissions, coal combustion, biomass burning, soil dust, and traffic emissions, were identified by the positive matrix factorization model in 2019–2021. Compared to 2019, the reduction in PM2.5 from the secondary aerosol source in 2020 and 2021 was small, and the contribution of secondary aerosol to PM2.5 increased by 13.32% in 2020 and 12.94% in 2021. In comparison, the primary emissions, including biomass burning, traffic, and dust, were reduced by 29.71% in 2020 and 27.7% in 2021. The results indicated that the secondary production did not significantly contribute to the PM2.5 decrease during and after the COVID-19 restrictions. We evaluate the black carbon (BC) simulations for 2006 over the Tibetan Plateau by a global 3-D chemical transport model using surface observations of BC in surface air and in snow and BC absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD). Using updated Asian anthropogenic BC emissions (Lu et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2009) and global biomass burning emissions (Randerson et al., 2012; van der Werf et al., 2010), model results of both surface BC and BC in snow are statistically in good agreement with observations (biases < 15 %). Model results capture the seasonal variation of surface BC concentration, but the observed wintertime high values at rural sites in the Indo-Gangetic Plain are absent in the model. Model results are in general agreement with observations (within a factor of two) at remote sites. Model simulated BC concentrations in snow are spatiotemporally consistent with observations at most sites. We find that modeled BC AAOD are significantly lower than observations to the northwest of the Plateau and along the southern slopes of the Himalayas during winter and spring, reflecting model deficiencies in emissions, topography and BC mixing state. We find that anthropogenic emissions strongly affect surface BC concentration and AAOD, while the BC aging mainly affects BC in snow over the Plateau. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The vertical profile of aerosol is important for its radiative effects, but weakly constrained by observations on the global scale, and highly variable among different models. To investigate the controlling factors, we investigate the effects of individual processes in one particular model (HadGEM3-UKCA), and compare the resulting diversity of aerosol vertical profiles with the inter-model diversity from the AeroCom Phase II control experiment. In this way we show that (in this model at least) the vertical profile is controlled by a relatively small number of processes, although these vary among aerosol components and particle sizes. We also show that sufficiently coarse variations in these processes can produce a similar diversity to that among different models in terms of the global mean profile and zonal-mean vertical position. However, there are features of certain models' profiles that cannot be reproduced, suggesting the influence of further structural differences between models. Convective transport is found to be very important in controlling the vertical profile of all aerosol components by mass. In-cloud scavenging is very important for all except mineral dust. Growth by condensation is important for sulphate and carbonaceous aerosol (along with aqueous oxidation for the former and ageing by soluble material for the latter). The vertical extent of biomass-burning emissions into the free troposphere is also important for the profile of carbonaceous aerosol. Boundary-layer mixing plays a dominant role for sea-salt and mineral dust, which are emitted only from the surface. Dry deposition and below-cloud scavenging are important for the profile of mineral dust only. In this model, the microphysical processes of nucleation, condensation and coagulation dominate the vertical profile of the smallest particles by number, while the profiles of larger particles are controlled by the same processes as the component mass profiles, plus the size distribution of primary emissions. We also show that the processes that affect the AOD-normalised radiative forcing in the model are predominantly those that affect the vertical mass distribution, in particular convective transport, in-cloud scavenging, aqueous oxidation, ageing and the vertical extent of biomass-burning emissions. Biomass as an abundant "green" renewable and CO2 neutral energy source have captured the entire world attention as a result of worsening energy crisis and environmental problems. Combustion of biomass have huge potentials of producing heat and power in a sustainable way. However, biomass fuels possess alkali metals i.e potassium (K) content which react with other ash forming elements i.e chlorine (Cl) to form alkali containing species i.e potassium chloride (KCl) which results in ash related operational problems (slagging and fouling). Kaolin; an aluminum-silicate based additive is regarded as the best additive at handling and capturing the problematic alkali containing species during biomass combustion with its ability to convert alkali containing species to high melting point potassium aluminum silicates (Kalsilite, Leucite). Therefore, this paper presents an overview of the mechanism of ash deposition, highlight key findings of aluminosilicate-based additives applications from previous studies and ends with kaolin future perspective. Aerosols, both natural and anthropogenic, are an important but complex component of the Earth's climate system. Their net impact on climate is about equal in magnitude to that of greenhouse gases but can vary significantly by region and type. Understanding and quantifying these aerosol effects is critical for accurate climate modeling and for developing strategies to mitigate climate change. In this paper, we utilize AERONET (Aerosol Robotic NETwork) data from 10 stations situated in the dust belt region to characterize aerosol properties essential for climate change assessment. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) data at 500 nm and Ångström exponent (α) data at the pair of wavelengths of 440 and 870 nm (α440-870) in the study region are analyzed to discriminate among different types of aerosols. The annual and monthly variabilities in AODs are analyzed to see the aerosols trend in the study region. In addition, the AOD and α440-870 data are utilized in order to determine different aerosol types during the period of study. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient between AODs and various meteorological parameters (temperature, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, and visibility) is analyzed. The results of the study indicate that Tamanrasset (2.49%), KAUST (1.29%), Solar Village (1.67%), and Dalanzadgad (0.64%) indicate an increasing trend, while Cairo (−0.38%), Masdar (−2.31%), Dushanbe (−1.18%), and Lahore (−0.10%) indicate a decreasing trend in AODs during the study period. Similarly, the results of characterizing aerosol types show that the highest percentage of desert dust aerosols (68%), mixed aerosols (86%), and biomass burning aerosols (15%) are found over Tamanrasset, Lahore, and Dalanzadgad AERONET stations. The study revealed a strong correlation between AODs and visibility, a moderate correlation with temperature, and a low correlation with other meteorological parameters (wind speed, wind direction, and relative humidity) in the study region. The results of the study are very encouraging and enhance our confidence in using historical AERONET data to improve our understanding of atmospheric aerosols' characteristics. Air staging features widely in biomass combustion from small space heaters to industrial-scale moving grate systems. Whilst studies have been conducted into the impact of air staging on emissions and combustion performance, there is little or no insight into the exact flow dynamic and physical mechanisms that are induced by secondary air under such conditions. This paper uses experimental data to validate numerical predictions before investigating the flow field structures and mixing characteristics in a fixed bed air staged combustor. The study utilizes Constant Temperature Anemometry (CTA) experiments to establish boundary conditions for a lab-scale fixed bed combustor. Results from numerical simulations obtained using k − k l - model were in good agreement with experimental data. Conditions tested cover five different secondary to total air ratios (Qs/Qt) and two different locations of secondary air injection. Results show that at Qs/Qt = 0.50, 0.25 and 0.18 one strong recirculation zone is induced upstream of the secondary air injection and one downstream. Varying the point of injection of secondary air from h/D = 0.64 to h/D = 0.40 also had an effect on the size of the upstream recirculation zone. Qs/Qt = 0.50 had the highest values of mixing index among all spatially located planes at the upstream of secondary air injection. The overall findings shed light on the possible flow interactions between secondary air and the top layers of fuel bed. This paper reports on the first daily global monitoring program for natural gas flaring and industrial sites producing waste heat based on satellite observed infrared emissions. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) collects nightly global infrared data in spectral bands ranging from near infrared (NIR) to longwave infrared (LWIR), providing a unique capability to detect and characterize infrared emitters at night. The VIIRS nightfire (VNF) algorithm identifies infrared (IR) emitters with multiple spectral bands and calculates the temperature, source area, and radiant heat via Planck curve fitting and physical laws. VNF data are produced nightly and extend from 2012 to the present. The most common infrared emitter is biomass burning, which must be filtered out. Industrial IR emitters can be distinguished from biomass burning based on temperature and persistence. The initial filtering to remove biomass burning was performed with 15 arc second grids formed from eleven years of VIIRS data, spanning 2012–2022. The locations and shapes of the remaining features were used to guide the generation of super-resolution pixel center clouds. These data clouds were then analyzed to define bounding vectors for single emitters and to split larger clusters into multiple emitters. A total of nearly 20,000 IR emitters were identified; each was assigned an identification number, and the type of emitter was recorded. Nightly temporal profiles were produced for each site, revealing activity patterns back to 2012. Nightly temporal profiles were kept current with weekly updates. Temporal profiles from individual sites were aggregated by country to form monthly profiles extending back to 2012. The nightly and monthly temporal profiles were suitable for analyzing industrial production, identifying disruption events, and tracking recovery.
