Epilobium and Chamaenerion included 165 and 8 species over the world, respectively. The members of the genera are distributed particularly in moist habitats from subpolar to tropical regions. This paper aims to provide improvements in the phylogeny of the genera Epilobium and Chamaenerion using Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of nuclear DNA and matK gene sequence data evaluation with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference criterations. A total of 188 individual accessions belonging to 28 taxa were newly generated and 110 sequences imported from GenBank (NCBI) were analysed. The nrDNA and plastid DNA gene trees supported to treat Epilobium and Chamaenerion as separate genera in two well-supported clades. The matK analyses revealed a better resolution than nrDNA ITS within the Chamaenerion clade and supported the inclusion of C. angustifolium in the sect. Chamaenerion. However, most of the examined species mostly fell into the polytomy in both trees excluding E. roseum subsp. consimile which should be considered a distinct species in the Epilobium contrary to morphological treatment in many national flora books. Both phylogenetic trees also support distinguishing E. prionophyllum from E. anatolicum previously treated as a subspecies of E. anatolicum. In conclusion, these preliminary phylogenetic analyses have contributed significantly to the determination of the limits of members belonging to Epilobium and Chamaenerion distributed in Türkiye. The geometric process (GP) plays an important role in the reliability theory and life span models. It has been used extensively as a stochastic model in many areas of application. Therefore, the parameter estimation problem is very crucial in a GP. In this study, the parameter estimation problem for GP is discussed under the assumption that X 1 has a Lindley distribution with parameter θ. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimators of a , μ and σ 2 of the GP and their asymptotic distributions are derived. A test statistic is developed based on ML estimators for testing whether a = 1 or not. The same problem is also studied by using Bayesian methods. Bayes estimators of the unknown model parameters are obtained under squared error loss function (SELF) using uniform and gamma priors on the ratio a and θ parameters. It is not possible to obtain Bayes estimators in explicit forms. Therefore, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), Lindley (LD), and Tierney–Kadane (T–K) methods are used to estimate the parameters a , μ and σ 2 in GP. The efficiencies of the ML estimators are compared with Bayes estimators via an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study. It is seen that the Bayes estimators perform better than the ML estimators. Studies on phylogeography and population structure of Ixodes ricinus have been carried out in Europe for decades, but the number of specimens from the Middle East included in these analyses is relatively small, despite the wide distribution of the species in this area. This study aimed to clarify the phylogenetic positions of I. ricinus from Turkey as well as to investigate the presence of Ixodes inopinatus in Anatolia. For this purpose, one mitochondrial (mt 16S rDNA) and one nuclear gene (defensin) were used to generate molecular data from I. ricinus samples, which were collected from 17 locations across the species' distributional range in Turkey. Bayesian inference was used to investigate phylogenetic relationships. Globally, the mt 16S rDNA lineages correspond to the lineages revealed by defensin; I. ricinus and I. inopinatus sequences clustered separately. However, a discordant genetic pattern was observed between the phylogenetic position of turkish I. ricinus revealed by nuclear versus mitochondrial genes. All Turkish haplotypes of mt 16SrDNA clustered with I. ricinus samples from Europe, which might be the result of extensive gene flow between populations of Europe and the Middle East. On the other hand, a sample from Thrace Region grouped within I. inopinatus clade. Thus, the occurrence of I. inopinatus in Turkey was demonstrated for the first time using molecular data. Moreover, four individuals were found to be heterozygous for the defensin. Aim The aims of this study are to establish a multi-locus phylogeny-based hypothesis for the biogeographical relationship of gastropods from the putative ancient Lake Egˇirdir, to test the respective null hypothesis, to estimate the timing of biogeographical events based on independent molecular clock approaches, and to interpret the data with respect to the putative ancient character of Lake Egˇirdir. Location Lake Egˇirdir, western Taurus Lake District, Turkey. Methods DNA sequences from the putatively only extant endemic taxon of Lake Egˇirdir, Falsipyrgula pfeiferi, as well as representatives of other pyrgulinid genera from Europe and western Asia are used for phylogenetic analyses based on Bayesian inference. The respective null hypothesis is tested utilizing parametric bootstrapping. The timing of evolutionary events is estimated based on two independent molecular clock approaches, which involve the modelling of judicious errors associated with branch-length calculations and calibration points. Results Bayesian inference indicates a very close relationship between the Lake Egˇirdir and Ponto-Caspian taxa. Parametric bootstrapping rejects the null hypothesis that these taxa are not monophyletic ( P ≤ 0.01). The alternative hypothesis, namely monophyly of the Ponto-Caspian and Egˇirdir taxa, can therefore be accepted. The two independent molecular clock approaches show diversion times for the Ponto-Caspian/Egˇirdir taxa of 0.42 ± 0.18 and 0.43 ± 0.63 Ma. Main conclusions The present study shows that there is no close biogeographical affiliation between the probably only remaining endemic taxon of Lake Egˇirdir and taxa from central Europe or the Balkan region. Instead, there is a very close and relatively young (i.e. late Pleistocene) biogeographical relationship with the Ponto-Caspian pyrgulinids. However, fossil and comparative data from other invertebrates indicate that biogeographical connections between Lake Egˇirdir and the Ponto-Caspian region existed during various time periods, i.e. the Miocene/Pliocene, early Pleistocene, and late Pleistocene. Acknowledging the still-restricted knowledge of the evolutionary history of the lake, the data presented here do not reject the putative ancient status of Lake Egˇirdir. Future studies utilizing endemic taxa of other lakes in the region need to show whether the western Taurus Lake District represents a melting pot of Pleistocene refuge biodiversity from different regions, and whether the admixture of divergent lineages has created a genetically distinct set of taxa that would warrant the designation of the area as a unique biogeographical subregion.
