Abstract: International audience; Checking the diagnosability of a time discrete event system usually consists in determining whether a single fault event can always be identified with certainty after a finite amount of time. The aim of this paper is to extend this type of analysis to more complex behaviors, called event patterns, and to propose an effective method to check diagnosability with the use of modelchecking techniques. To do so, we propose to convert the pattern diagnosability problem into checking a linear-time property over a specific time Petri net. Note to Practitioners-This paper is motivated by the problem of improving the monitoring and the supervision of systems like automated and robotised manufacturing systems. Based on a model of the system, the paper proposes a method to assert with certainty whether the available set of sensors will always provide enough information to ensure that a complex and unexpected behavior has not happened in the system. The proposed method uses a publicly available model-checking tool to perform this analysis.

Abstract: International audience; A wave equation whose main coefficient is discontinuous models the evolution of waves amplitude in a media composed of at least two different materials, in which the propagation speed is different. In our mathematical setting, the spatial domain where the partial differential equation evolves is an open bounded subset of R^2 and the wave speed is assumed to be constant in each one of two sub-domains, separated by a smooth and possibly non-convex interface. This article is concerned with the construction of Carleman weights for this wave operator, allowing generalizations of previous results to the case of an interface that is not necessarily the boundary of a convex set. Indeed, using the orthogonal projection onto this interface, we define convex functions satisfying the transmission conditions imposed by the equation, such that, under usual hypothesis on the sign of the jump of the wave speed, can be used as Carleman weights.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, we develop a novel method to automatically detect areas of snow avalanche debris using a color space segmentation technique applied to SAR image time series through January 2018 in the Swiss Alps. Debris avalanche zones are detected assuming that these areas are characterised by a significant and localised increase in SAR signal relative to the surrounding environment. We undertake a sensitivity study by calculating debris products by varying the D-M reference images (a stable reference image taken several weeks before the event). We examine the results according to the direction of the orbit, the characteristics of the terrain (slope, altitude, orientation) and also by evaluating the relevance of the detection with the help of an independent SPOT database ([1]) including 18,737 avalanche events. Small avalanches are not detected by SAR images and depending on the orientation of the terrain some avalanches are not detected by either the ascending or the descending orbit. The detection results vary with the reference image; best detection results are obtained with some selected individual dates with almost 70 % of verified avalanche events using the ascending orbit.

Abstract: International audience; We propose an original approach to optimize the TRISHNA instrument spectral configuration for the Split-Window (SW) method. First, we consider as input of end-to-end simulations an emissivity dataset that accounts for cavity effect within vegetation canopy. Second, we propose a bi-dimensional approach where both locations of TRISHNA SW channels, namely λ T IR3 c and λ T IR4 c , can slide within predefined spectral intervals. We report a large sensitivity to channel positions, with variations of RMSE on retrieved land surface temperature up to 3 K. Our bi-dimensional approach shows that this sensitivity is consistent with the underlying assumptions of the SW method. Indeed, two regions are observed in the (λ T IR3 c , λ T IR4 c) space: (1) an unfavorable region corresponding to λ T IR3 c ≤ 10.0 µm, where large RMSE values are ascribed to large differences between emissivities in both SW channels, and (2) a favorable region corresponding to λ T IR3 c ≥ 10.3 µm, where differences between emissivities in both SW channels are small, and where RMSE values are driven by the differences between atmospheric transmittance in both SW channels. Overall, it is necessary to better account for the difference in surface emissivities between the two SW channels, whereas disregarding the cavity effect within vegetation canopy is not critical. Eventually, our bidimensional approach permits to define an optimal position for λ T IR3 c at 10.6 µm, which induces a larger robustness to uncertainties on channel positions. By applying our study on two structurally different SW formulations and addressing impacts of uncertainties on land surface emissivity and atmospheric water vapor content, we show that these results can be generalized to other SW formulations.

Abstract: International audience; Recent efforts in chemistry have led to development of a fast and continuous process for the production of synthetic talc in a supercritical hydrothermal reactor. This attractive process compatible with industrial requirements leads to advantageous physicochemical characteristics including submicrometer size, hydrophilicity, and high chemical and mineralogical purity. In addition, the high speed of the process and moderate reaction conditions have potential advantages from a viewpoint of the impacts on the environment. To verify environmental advantages and seize further opportunities to improve environmental performance, the current study evaluates the new process using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. A cradle-to-gate assessment considers the production of synthetic talc from different magnesium and reagent acid precursors at different concentrations. The findings suggest high impacts of precursors (65–94%, depending on their concentration) and low impacts of process energy and water. Substituting magnesium acetate with magnesium sulfate could reduce greenhouse gases from 4.8 to 2.6 kgCO2 and cumulative energy use from 86 to 34 MJ per 1 kg of synthetic talc. Discussion draws on previous LCA studies on the supercritical hydrothermal process and applications of synthetic talc considering its environmental performance and characteristics in comparison to the conventional (natural) talc.

Abstract: International audience; This paper studies the rheological behavior of aqueous suspensions of fine grained (d50 = 200 nm) alumina. Rheological measurements were performed on suspensions containing various amounts of solid and 0.26 wt% of ammonium polymethacrylate in order to ensure a good state of dispersion. Brownian motions, colloidal interactions and hydrodynamic interactions dictate the behavior. The viscosity is mainly influenced by the shear rate and by the solid volume fraction. A Maron and Pierce model was used to describe this last effect in the hydrodynamic regime. The maximum packing fraction was found to be 40 vol%. This value is related to the colloidal stability as described by the DLVO theory. In fact, the maximum packing fraction leads to a surface-to-surface separation distance of about 46 nm because of the repulsive potential. Finally, a dimensionless approach was achieved to quantitatively identify, on the rheogram, the different flow regimes associated to each dominant interaction type.

Abstract: International audience; The paper presents the results of dynamic crushing of sandwich tubes that had skins made of carbon or glass fibres-with epoxy resin-and an I214 poplar ply core. By increasing the number of poplar plies from two to six, the absorbed energy is doubled, showing the significant contribution of the wood. The Specific Energy Absorption of sandwiches with carbon fibre skins oscillated between 49.4 and 60 J/g while that with glass fibre skins varied from 35.4 to 43.3 J/g.

Abstract: International audience; With their high chemical and self-irradiation stability, crystalline monazites are among the most promising materials for the encapsulation of nuclear wastes. Yet, the local and magnetic structures of the matrices doped with low-content actinide cation, depicted as most resistant, are still unclear. This limits the development of theoretical approaches predicting their behavior under extreme conditions—self-irradiation and long-term leaching. Here, we characterize the model matrices La1–xMxPO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10)—with M = Sm, 239Pu, 241Am—by X-ray diffraction and solid-state 31P NMR. As an example, we confirm that La0.96241Am0.04PO4 has higher self-irradiation resistance compared to 241AmPO4. Further, computational analyses show that magnetic properties of the Pu complex are strongly affected by the J-mixing and the paramagnetic NMR shifts are dominated by the Fermi contact contribution, arising from delocalization of the spin density of the cation toward the phosphorus through the bonds.

Abstract: International audience; Robustness of deep neural networks is a critical issue in practical applications. In the general case of feed-forward neural networks (including convolutional deep neural network architectures), under random noise attacks, we propose to study the probability that the output of the network deviates from its nominal value by a given threshold. We derive a simple concentration inequality for the propagation of the input uncertainty through the network using the Cramer-Chernoff method and estimates of the local variation of the neural network mapping computed at the training points. We further discuss and exploit the resulting condition on the network to regularize the loss function during training. Finally, we assess the proposed tail probability estimates empirically on various public datasets and show that the observed robustness is very well estimated by the proposed method.

Abstract: The modeling of the fluidization or sedimentation velocity of a suspension of solid particles is revisited by examining experiments conducted in either a liquid or a gas. A general expression is found in the case of negligible fluid inertia, i.e. at low Reynolds or Archimedes number. It is built as the product of the velocity of an isolated particle by three non-dimensional corrections that each takes into account a specific physical mechanism. The first correction reflects the variation of the buoyancy with the particle concentration. The second correction describes how the drag force increases with the concentration in case of negligible particle inertia. The third one accounts for the further increase of the drag when the particle inertia is increased. Remarkably, each correction only relies on a single of the three independent non-dimensional groups that control the problem: (1) the particle volume fraction Φs; (2) the ratio Φs/Φpack where Φpack is the bed packing concentration; (3) the Stokes number S t 0 , which characterizes the inertia of the particles and controls their agitation. Moreover, the onset of the instability that separates the homogeneous regime from the heterogeneous one is found to be controlled similarly by the Stokes number. Empirical expressions of the corrections are given, which provide a reliable tool to predict fluidization and sedimentation velocities for all values of the three non-dimensional numbers. The present results emphasize the crucial role of particle inertia, which is often disregarded in previous modeling approaches, such as that of Richardson and Zaki.

Abstract: International audience; The problem of filter design is considered for linear stochastic systems using distributed sensors. Each sensor unit, represented by a node in an an undirected and connected graph, collects some information about the state and communicates its own estimate with the neighbors. It is stipulated that this communication between sensor nodes is time-sampled randomly and the sampling process is assumed to be a Poisson counter. Our proposed filtering algorithm for each sensor node is a stochastic hybrid system: It comprises a continuous-time differential equation, and at random time instants when communication takes place, each sensor node updates its state estimate based on the information received by its neighbors. In this setting, we compute the expectation of the error covariance matrix for each unit which is governed by a matrix differential equation. To study the asymptotic behavior of these covariance matrices, we show that if the gain matrices are appropriately chosen and the mean sampling rate is large enough, then the error covariances practically converge to a constant matrix.

Abstract: We developed a new hybrid material resulting from an innovative supramolecular tripartite association between an ionic liquid covalently immobilized on primary β-cyclodextrins rim and an anionic water-soluble polymer. Two hydrophilic ternary complexes based on native and permethylated β-cyclodextrins substituted with an ionic liquid and immobilized on poly(styrene sulfonate) (CD-IL+PSS− and CD(OMe)IL+PSS−) were obtained by simple dialysis with a cyclodextrin maximal grafting rate of 25% and 20% on the polymer, respectively. These polyelectrolytes are based on electrostatic interactions between the opposite charges of the imidazolium cation of the ionic liquid and the poly(styrene sulfonate) anion. The inclusion properties of the free cavities of the cyclodextrins and the synergic effect of the polymeric matrix were studied with three reference guests such as phenolphthalein, p-nitrophenol, and 2-anilinonaphthalene-6-sulfonic acid using UV-visible, fluorescent, and NMR spectroscopies. The support has been applied successfully in dialysis device to extract and concentrated aromatic model molecule. This simple and flexible synthetic strategy opens the way to new hybrid materials useful for fast and low-cost ecofriendly extraction techniques relevant for green analytical chemistry.

Abstract: International audience; One prerequisite for high-speed imaging in dynamic-mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) is the fast demod-ulation of the probe signal. In this contribution, we present the amplitude and phase estimation method based on the acquisition of four points per oscillation, with the sampling frequency being phase-locked on the probe actuation. The method is implemented on a RedPitaya platform, with its clock being generated from the actuation signal of the probe. Experimental characterizations using square-modulated sine waves show that latency of 500 ns is achieved with a carrier frequency of 10 MHz, which is ten times faster compared with a state-of-the-art lock-in amplifier. A tracking bandwidth greater than 200 kHz is obtained experimentally. The method is eventually applied to a close-loop AFM scan realized using a 15-MHz AFM probe, showing its suitability for high-frequency oscillating probes. Abstract: The snowpack over the Mediterranean mountains constitutes a key water resource for the downstream populations. However, its dynamics have not been studied in detail yet in many areas, mostly because of the scarcity of snowpack observations. In this work, we present a characterization of the snowpack over the two mountain ranges of Lebanon. To obtain the necessary snowpack information, we have developed a 1 km regional-scale snow reanalysis (ICAR_assim) covering the period 2010–2017. ICAR_assim was developed by means of an ensemble-based data assimilation of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) fractional snow-covered area (fSCA) through an energy and mass snow balance model, the Flexible Snow Model (FSM2), using the particle batch smoother (PBS). The meteorological forcing data were obtained by a regional atmospheric simulation from the Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research model (ICAR) nested inside a coarser regional simulation from the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). The boundary and initial conditions of WRF were provided by the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis. ICAR_assim showed very good agreement with MODIS gap-filled snow products, with a spatial correlation of R=0.98 in the snow probability (P(snow)) and a temporal correlation of R=0.88 on the day of peak snow water equivalent (SWE). Similarly, ICAR_assim has shown a correlation with the seasonal mean SWE of R=0.75 compared with in situ observations from automatic weather stations (AWSs). The results highlight the high temporal variability in the snowpack in the Lebanese mountain ranges, with the differences between Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains that cannot only be explained by hypsography as the Anti-Lebanon Mountains are in the rain shadow of Mount Lebanon. The maximum fresh water stored in the snowpack is in the middle elevations, approximately between 2200 and 2500 m a.s.l. (above sea level). Thus, the resilience to further warming is low for the snow water resources of Lebanon due to the proximity of the snowpack to the zero isotherm.

Abstract: Fractals are found in nature and play important roles in biological functions. However, it is challenging to controllably prepare biomolecule fractals. In this study, a series of Sierpiński triangles with global organizational chirality is successfully constructed by the coassembly of l-tryptophan and 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)benzene molecules on Ag(111). The chirality is switched when replacing l-tryptophan by d-tryptophan. The fractal structures are characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at the single-molecule level. Density functional theory calculations reveal that intermolecular hydrogen bonds stabilize the Sierpiński triangles.

In this work, micro-Raman spectroscopy was applied to analyze the nature of the rusty oil spot pattern of a bowl fragment from Linfen kilns. Crystals of polygonal shape found in the spots at the glaze surface and around bubbles in the cross-section of the glaze were identified as hematite. Their distribution in the glaze suggests that nucleation seeds and small crystals are carried toward the surface by the rise of bubbles during the heating step of the firing. Raman spectra combined with energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) measurements also suggest that Fe ions in hematite crystals are partially substituted, causing the variation of band position and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the spectra. Dendritic ε-Fe2O3 was identified in brown areas of the black glaze, as well as pseudobrookite crystals of tens of microns in the cross-section of the glaze. The degree of the glaze polymerization (A500/A1000) was calculated at 1.85, indicating a firing temperature lower than 1300°C, consistent with the archaeological data.

Abstract: International audience; The electrochemical behavior of a giant rotaxane bearing 10 electroactive ferrocene centers has been analyzed by both fast scan cyclic voltammetry and impedance measurements. The measurements support the hypothesis that all redox centers are not equivalent and display different electron transfer rate constants, which would arise from several possible conformations of the adsorbed molecule. Effectively using such systems in molecular devices thus necessitates to minimize or at least control those dispersions.

Abstract: This paper reviews the effect of multirotor aerial vehicle designs on their abilities in terms of tasks and system properties. We propose a general taxonomy to characterize and describe multirotor aerial vehicles and their designs, which we apply exhaustively on the vast literature available. Thanks to the systematic characterization of the designs, we exhibit groups of designs having the same abilities in terms of achievable tasks and system properties. In particular, we organize the literature review based on the number of atomic actuation units and we discuss global properties arising from their choice and spatial distribution in the mechanical designs. Abstract: International audience; Tasks such as analysis, design optimization, and uncertainty quantification can be computationally expensive. Surrogate modeling is often the tool of choice for reducing the burden associated with such data-intensive tasks. However, even after years of intensive research, surrogate modeling still involves a struggle to achieve maximum accuracy within limited resources. This work summarizes various advanced, yet often straightforward, statistical tools that help. We focus on four techniques with increasing popularity in the surrogate modeling community: (i) variable screening and dimensionality reduction in both the input and the output spaces, (ii) data sampling techniques or design of experiments, (iii) simultaneous use of multiple surrogates, and (iv) sequential sampling. We close the paper with some suggestions for future research.

Abstract: International audience; The representation of a high-impact weather (HIW) event over southern France is evaluated in Météo-France forecasts, and the sensitivity of the HIW forecast to the upstream upper-level flow and the Mediterranean and North Atlantic humidity structure prior to the event is quantified. The event occurred in October 2016 during the international field experiment NAWDEX. The approach of an upper-level potential vorticity (PV) cut-off, referred to as cut-off Sanchez, triggered extreme precipitation over southern France. Many 2- to 7-day ensemble forecasts predicted the maximum of the extreme precipitation and the location of the upper-level PV cut-off too far to the east. This eastward shift primarily resulted from an underestimation of the cut-off intensity two days before the HIW and the subsequent downstream propagation and amplification of these errors in the vicinity of Sanchez. Improving the representation of the cut-off two days before the event significantly improved the forecast quality. Another error source were inaccuracies in the moisture structure in the eastern North Atlantic. Specifically, an underestimation of the moisture in the warm conveyor belt inflow led to errors in the low- and upper-level circulation that eventually contributed to the eastward shift of the HIW two days later. Corrections in the eastern North Atlantic humidity structure further improved the forecast quality. On the other hand, corrections in the Mediterranean humidity structure had only a small impact on the accuracy of the forecast. The findings illustrate the importance of downstream error propagation and moist diabatic processes for the prediction of extreme weather over Europe, and demonstrate how targeted changes in the PV and humidity field a few days in advance can improve the quality of the forecasts.

Abstract: There are very few African regional inventories providing biofuel and fossil fuel emissions. Within the framework of the DACCIWA project, we have developed an African regional anthropogenic emission inventory including the main African polluting sources (wood and charcoal burning, charcoal making, trucks, cars, buses and two-wheeled vehicles, open waste burning, and flaring). To this end, a database on fuel consumption and emission factors specific to Africa was established using the most recent measurements. New spatial proxies (road network, power plant geographical coordinates) were used to convert national emissions into gridded inventories at a 0.1∘ × 0.1∘ spatial resolution. This inventory includes carbonaceous particles (black and organic carbon) and gaseous species (CO, NOx, SO2 and NMVOCs) for the period 1990–2015 with a yearly temporal resolution. We show that all pollutant emissions are globally increasing in Africa during the period 1990–2015 with a growth rate of 95 %, 86 %, 113 %, 112 %, 97 % and 130 % for BC, OC, NOx, CO, SO2 and NMVOCs, respectively. We also show that Western Africa is the highest emitting region of BC, OC, CO and NMVOCs, followed by Eastern Africa, largely due to domestic fire and traffic activities, while Southern Africa and Northern Africa are the highest emitting regions of SO2 and NOx due to industrial and power plant sources. Emissions from this inventory are compared to other regional and global inventories, and the emissions uncertainties are quantified by a Monte Carlo simulation. Abstract: International audience; This study summarizes an assessment of the wind resource at selected locations in Fiji for the potential of future utility-scale wind-power development. We use 2-8 years of near surface wind observations (2011-2018) from thirty automatic weather stations. The standard windindustry software, WAsP is used to simulate the wind resource in terms of mean wind speed, dominant wind direction, power density and annual energy production (AEP) using a Vergnet 275-kW wind turbine. Our analysis identifies three sites: Rakiraki, Nabouwalu and Udu, which should be considered for a future comprehensive resource assessment for utility-scale windpower development once further wind resource data is available. High-resolution resource maps for each wind resource parameter at a horizontal resolution of 50 m are produced for 6 km × 6 km domains around these sites. Rakiraki, Nabouwalu and Udu have average wind speeds of 7.6 m/s, 7.1 m/s and 7.0 m/s, with an average power density of 401 W/m 2 , 512 W/m 2 and 294 W/m 2 , and a potential average AEP of 0.91 GWh, 0.80 GWh and 0.72 GWh at 55 m AGL, respectively. The dominant wind direction is southeasterly. Modelling a 10 MW wind farm at each site yields a net AEP of 43 GWh, 42 GWh and 37 GWh for Rakiraki, Nabouwalu and Udu, respectively with capacity factors of 0.42-0.48 and wind farm efficiencies of 97-98 %.

Abstract: International audience; Kriging is a widely employed technique, in particular for computer experiments, in machine learning or in geostatistics. An important challenge for Kriging is the computational burden when the data set is large. This article focuses on a class of methods aiming at decreasing this computational cost, consisting in aggregating Kriging predictors based on smaller data subsets. It proves that aggregation methods that ignore the covariancebetween sub-models can yield an inconsistent final Kriging prediction. In contrast, a theoretical study of the nested Kriging method shows additional attractive properties for it: First, this predictor is consistent, second it can be interpreted as an exact conditional distribution for a modified process and third, the conditional covariances given the observations can be computed efficiently. This article also includes a theoretical and numerical analysis of how the assignment of the observation points to the sub-models can affect the prediction ability of the aggregated model. Finally, the nested Kriging method is extended to measurement errors and to universal Kriging.

Abstract: International audience; We propose a novel class of piecewise smooth Lyapunov functions leading to LMI-based stability/performance analysis and control design for linear systems with saturating inputs. We provide conditions for global properties, and also conditions for local properties and guaranteed estimates of the basin of attraction. The backbone of our result consists in using quadratic forms with constant matrices that are not necessarily sign definite, thereby providing additional degrees of freedom. Using generalized sector conditions involving the dead-zone nonlinearity and its derivative, we formulate convex optimization conditions to verify their positivity in the region of interest. Several numerical examples with connections to existing results, illustrate the potential behind our novel construction.

Abstract: Geometries of molecule-molecule interfaces strongly influence the current passing from one molecule to another. The contact conductance of molecule-molecule junctions which consist of fullerene and tin phthalocyanine molecules is investigated with a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Two types of molecules are deposited onto Cu(111). Fullerene molecules are transferred to tips through controlled contact of STM tips on molecules. The molecule-molecule junctions are formed by approaching fullerene-terminated tips to tin phthalocyanine molecules on Cu(111). Our experimental method can be extended to study the intermolecular charge transport of a range of molecular junctions.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with an experimental study of angled fish-friendly trash racks with horizontal bars, using a physical model in an open channel. Head losses are investigated for 2 bar shapes, 3 ratios between bar spacing and bar thickness and 4 rack’s angles of orientation. The Froude and bar-Reynolds numbers were respectively 0.275 and 3600. The head loss coefficients decrease as the blockage ratio and the angle of orientation of the rack decrease. They are well predicted by the formula produced by Raynal et al. (2013a) for inclined rack with some adaptations. Velocity fields are characterized upstream and downstream of the racks, showing no effect of the angle of orientation and no heterogeneity over channel width. Consequently, the normal and tangential components of the velocity along the rack are in agreement with the theoretical values given by angular decomposition. These results serve to assess the compliance with biological criteria to avoid impingement risks and guide fish towards a bypass.

Abstract: International audience; In this article, we report a facile precursor pyrolysis by sol-gel method to prepare spinel-type Cobalt-substituted zinc aluminate nanoparticles (Zn1–xCoxAl2O4, 0≤x≤1). The relationship between the degree of crystallinity and the optical properties under the effect of the calcination temperature was investigated. The synthesized powders were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetry and Differential thermal analysis (TG–DTA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis (BET), UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy analysis and colorimetric analysis (CIELab). A single-phase Zn1–xCoxAl2O4 (0≤x≤1) spinel was formed at an annealing temperature of 700°C. Structural refinement via the Rietveld method shows that an annealing temperature in excess of 700°C leads to a decrease in the amorphous phase rate. At 800 °C, the enrichment in 50% of cobalt leads to blue powders with a degree of crystallinity of approximately 92% and a quasi-spherical morphology of nanometric size less than 100 nm.

Abstract: International audience; Today, in Electric Railways, the old DC supply systems are reaching their limits. To improve their efficiency and increase railroad traffic, a new DC Electrification has recently been proposed at 9-kV. It is now necessary to prepare the migration of infrastructure and rolling stock, using Power-Electronic-Transformers (PETs), for adaptation to this voltage level. For this application, high efficiency and reduced volume are essential. This paper clearly demonstrates that it is now possible to achieve compact, high-power, isolated DC-DC converters using 3.3-kV SiC-MOSFET power modules with high efficiency. After a preliminary study based on simulations, the paper focuses on characterization and implementation of elementary isolated DC-DC converters. The proposed topology is a series-resonant converter rated for a nominal power of 300-kW at 1.8-kV. First, laboratory testing using an “opposition-method” is used to evaluate the elementary converters up to their nominal power using both electrical and thermal measurements to accurately determine losses and efficiency. At the nominal output power, an efficiency of 98.93% is obtained. This is quite remarkable for an isolated DC-DC converter operating under 1.8-kV with a switching frequency of 15-kHz. Finally, two elementary isolated DC/DC converters are associated in ISOP configuration (Input Seriesed/Output Paralleled) in order to achieve a 3-kV/1.5-kV PET with a nominal power of 600-kW as a prelude to the final 9-kV/1.5-kV power conversion.

Abstract: International audience; This paper investigates the stability of a linear finite-dimensional system interconnected to a single delay operator. From robust approaches, to derive delay-dependent frequency tests, a characterization of the delay behavior is required. Based on approximation methods, one describes the transported signal by lumped parameters. More precisely, by the use of the first Fourier-Legendre polynomials coefficients, we split the delay block into a finitedimensional part interconnected to a specific infinite-dimensional residual part. Two models are investigated with residuals related to two Fourier-Legendre remainders of the delayed transfer function. The main contribution is to highlight that the finite-dimensional models based on the first Legendre coefficients are proven to be related to Padé approximations and are recognized to be more and more accurate as the dimension increases. Interestingly, this modeling allows computing in an accurate manner the root locus of time-delay systems. Furthermore, as a by-product of this result, taking into account the infinite-dimensional remainders to keep track of the initial time-delay system, stability criteria are proposed by H∞ analysis. Considering both infinite-dimensional remainders as bounded delay-free uncertainties, the small-gain theorem provides a new sufficient condition of stability for retarded time-delay systems, which can be implemented as a delay-dependent frequency-sweeping test. Our results are illustrated on several academic examples.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we consider the problem of allocation of Emergency Vehicles (EVs) to Rescue Centers (RCs). The objective is to improve the operational response of the Fire and Rescue Services (SDIS) in France. More precisely, we focus on the mid-term management, and on the process of redeployment of EVs in RCs according to the evolution of requirements. At this level of decision, we do not have information on accidents. We only used the available information on the simultaneity of requirements. Based on the Hurwicz criterion, we develop a mathematical model and an iterative algorithm to solve it. The proposed approach takes into account both the uncertainty on the occurrence sequence of accidents, and the attitude towards optimization of the decision maker (DM). An illustration from the DM’s point of view is presented. It shows that this uncertainty significantly impacts the deployment of EVs. Results show that the proposed approach has an efficient resolution time for real size problems.

Abstract: International audience; Fluid–mineral and fluid–rock interfaces are key parameters controlling the reactivity and fate of fluids in reservoir rocks and aquifers. The interface dynamics through space and time results from complex processes involving a tight coupling between chemical reactions and transport of species as well as a strong dependence on the physical, chemical, mineralogical and structural properties of the reacting solid phases. In this article, we review the recent advances in pore-scale imaging and reactive flow modelling applied to interface dynamics. Digital rocks derived from time-lapse X-ray micro-tomography imaging gives unprecedented opportunity to track the interface evolution during reactive flow experiments in porous or fractured media, and evaluate locally mineral reactivity. The recent improvements in pore-scale reactive transport modelling allow for a fine description of flow and transport that integrates moving fluid–mineral interfaces inherent to chemical reactions. Combined with three-dimensional digital images, pore-scale reactive transport modelling complements and augments laboratory experiments. The most advanced multi-scale models integrate sub-voxel porosity and processes which relate to imaging instrument resolution and improve upscaling possibilities. Two example applications based on the solver porousMedia4Foam illustrate the dynamics of the interface for different transport regimes (i.e., diffusive- to advective-dominant) and rock matrix properties (i.e., permeable vs. impermeable, and homogeneous vs. polymineralic). These parameters affect both the interface roughness and its geometry evolution, from sharp front to smeared (i.e., diffuse) interface. The paper concludes by discussing the challenges associated with precipitation processes in porous media, rock texture and composition (i.e., physical and mineralogical heterogeneity), and upscaling to larger scales.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, a closed-form analytical solution procedure is proposed to solve the coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) equations that involve the first-order Doubly Asymptotic Approximation (DAA1) formulation. An efficient method comprised of the nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) scheme is applied. First of all, analytical equations are developed to analyze the response of a rigid mass-spring oscillator in an air-backed condition when it is subjected to a plane shock exponential wave coming from a far-field underwater explosion. After validating the results with LS-DYNA/USA (DAA1), these equations are extended to determine the response of a two-dimensional, simply-supported rectangular plate, and then tested on the isotropic and orthotropic plates within a small deflection regime. Parametric studies are also performed by varying the load decay times, peak pressures, as well as the aspect ratios of the plate. Finally, the advantages and limitations of the proposed formulae are exposed along with suggestions for the future work.

Abstract: International audience; Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) and textile-reinforced concretes (TRCs) are becoming increasingly common solutions for strengthening masonry walls. This study focuses on different approaches for modelling the behaviour of hollow concrete block masonry walls strengthened with FRPs and a TRC subjected to in-plane loading. Specifically, the masonry is modelled using the heterogeneous approach, wherein the damage post-peak softening behaviours of both bricks and mortar are considered, as this approach is appropriate for material and structure scales. To model the FRP/TRC-reinforced masonry walls, the reinforcements (FRPs/TRC) are perfectly connected to the substrate. Although the homogeneous approach is proposed to model the FRPs with linear elastic behaviour and is shown to be appropriate for modelling the FRP-reinforced masonry walls, the TRC is modelled using the heterogeneous approach, allowing for the real contribution of the filaments to be expressed through an ‘efficiency factor’. The numerical results show that this factor has a significant influence on the behaviour of the TRC and therefore, on the overall behaviour of the TRC-reinforced walls. However, the ‘efficiency factor’ of the TRC sample is significantly higher than that of the TRC in the strengthened wall. This result confirms that the choice of the heterogeneous approach to model the TRC in our case is appropriate. Moreover, it verifies that it is impossible to transpose this global factor from the material scale (uniaxial tensile stress) to the structure scale when the application target is a masonry wall (multi-axiality, and therefore, complexity of the stress). Consequently, the constitutive laws of the TRC composite obtained through only direct uniaxial tensile characterization procedures are insufficient to enable a suitable restitution of the overall behaviour of the masonry reinforced with the TRC. In addition, regardless of the nature of the reinforcement, the overall behaviours of the masonry walls reinforced with the FRPs/TRC are governed by both the axial stiffness of the reinforcement and the compressive strength of the masonry substrate.

37. Boundary null-controllability of 1-D coupled parabolic systems with Kirchhoff-type conditions

Abstract: The main concern of this article is to investigate the boundary controllability of some $$2\times 2$$ one-dimensional parabolic systems with both the interior and boundary couplings: The interior coupling is chosen to be linear with constant coefficient while the boundary one is considered by means of some Kirchhoff-type condition at one end of the domain. We consider here the Dirichlet boundary control acting only on one of the two state components at the other end of the domain. In particular, we show that the controllability properties change depending on which component of the system the control is being applied. Regarding this, we point out that the choices of the interior coupling coefficient and the Kirchhoff parameter play a crucial role to deduce the positive or negative controllability results. Further to this, we pursue a numerical study based on the well-known penalized HUM approach. We make some discretization for a general interior-boundary coupled parabolic system, mainly to incorporate the effects of the boundary couplings into the discrete setting. This allows us to illustrate our theoretical results as well as to experiment some more examples which fit under the general framework, for instance a similar system with a Neumann boundary control on either one of the two components.

Abstract: A cross‐laboratory study on microbial fuel cells (MFC) which involved different institutions around the world is presented. The study aims to assess the development of autochthone microbial pools enriched from domestic wastewater, cultivated in identical single‐chamber MFCs, operated in the same way, thereby approaching the idea of developing common standards for MFCs. The MFCs are inoculated with domestic wastewater in different geographic locations. The acclimation stage and, consequently, the startup time are longer or shorter depending on the inoculum, but all MFCs reach similar maximum power outputs (55±22 μW cm−2) and COD removal efficiencies (87±9 %), despite the diversity of the bacterial communities. It is inferred that the MFC performance starts when the syntrophic interaction of fermentative and electrogenic bacteria stabilizes under anaerobic conditions at the anode. The generated power is mostly limited by electrolytic conductivity, electrode overpotentials, and an unbalanced external resistance. The enriched microbial consortia, although composed of different bacterial groups, share similar functions both on the anode and the cathode of the different MFCs, resulting in similar electrochemical output., The famous five: A cross‐laboratory study involving five institutions is presented. Each team runs a triplicate identical single chamber microbial fuel cell for 6 weeks varying only the inoculum. Electrochemical and operational parameters are collected. Microbiological analysis is carried out on the influent and effluent and on the electrodes. All the data collected are correlated by using robust statistics.

Abstract: International audience; The purpose of this first chapter is to introduce the content of the book “Nanoparticles & Catalysis: Advances in Synthesis and Applications.” As suggested by the title, this book is fully dedicated to the new trends in research addressing the engineering of metal nanoparticles for their application in the field of catalysis. After general information on the position, interests, and perspectives of this overgrowing domain, that is nanocatalysis, a short overview of the 15 chapters gathered is provided. The so-assembled data cover different domains of nanocatalysis both in terms of the nature of the nanocatalysts developed (metal nanoparticles or derived composite materials) and the variety of catalyses and reaction media studied. The reported applications deal with either nanocatalysis in solution conditions or in the supported ones. The readers from academic or industrial communities will find in this book a basic knowledge on the recent advances in the design of well-defined and efficient nanocatalysts by taking advantage of diverse synthesis methods and materials. This collection of chapters well illustrates the research efforts presently done in order to not only reach higher and original performances but also a better understanding of the key parameters for nanocatalysis.

Abstract: The series and parallel multicell converters have been introduced because they provide benefits in terms of efficiency and power density. However, they also allow reducing the amount of energy stored in the filters, which potentially allows for faster dynamic responses. Interleaving the control patterns of different cells is another distinctive feature of these converters and is also the root of another potential improvement of the dynamic response: with one pulsewidth modulation (PWM) update at each subcycle of the switching period, the n -cell converter may change its average output voltage over each of these intervals, while standard converters can only control the voltage over half the switching period. In this article, a general multirate modulation strategy taking advantage of this property, while avoiding an overswitching, and compatible with any n -cell converter is proposed and validated by simulation and experimental results.

Abstract: International audience; Housing under a shared housing organisation enables frail elderly persons to live in a semi autonomous way, thanks to cooperation between residents and an assistant. The social organization of this new type of housing also has an impact on the social participation of users. This article is based on a pilot study and deals with the benefits of digital technologies and “ambient intelligence” used to answer the needs of such a way of living. The pilot study was carried out in a house shared by 6 co-tenants. The qualitative method used first consisted in a characterisation of the 6 inhabitants. This was followed by semi-structured interviews about their sensed needs, and a focus group, with 5 of the 6 co-tenants, in order to gain an initial consensus about needs. This result was confronted to the demands of the assistants, collected through interviews. A usage scenario was developed in a smart home (Maison Intelligente de Blagnac). This scenario was performed by three of the inhabitants and followed by a second focus group and a narrative interview with the assistants and the designers of the shared house. This article reports the method which was carried out and the needs expressed by the co-tenants.

Abstract: Transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cell is a well-known method for the qualification of radiated electromagnetic emission from integrated circuits (ICs). Combined with a 180° hybrid coupler, it provides a simple method for quantifying radiated emission (RE). However, typical transformer or coupled line based hybrid couplers have limited bandwidth which cannot cover the full frequency range required by IC emission tests (150 kHz to 1 GHz). This article presents the design and the validation of a low-cost broadband electronic version of a 180° hybrid coupler dedicated to the estimation of radiation emission from TEM cell measurements. The proposed prototype is able to cover a large frequency range (from dc to 1 GHz) with a sufficient sensitivity and dynamic range for RE tests in TEM cell. The cost of the presented coupler is very reasonable as it is entirely based on commercial operational amplifiers.

Abstract: International audience; We address the runway scheduling problem under consideration of winter operations. During snowfall, runways have to be temporarily closed in order to clear them from snow, ice and slush. We propose an integrated optimization model to simultaneously plan snow removal for multiple runways and to assign runways and takeoff and landing times to aircraft. For this winter runway scheduling problem, we present a time-discrete binary model formulation using clique inequalities and an equivalent constraint programming model. To solve the winter runway scheduling problem optimally, we propose an exact solution methodology. Our start heuristic based on constraint programming generates a feasible initial start solution. We use a column generation scheme, which we initialize with a heuristic solution, to identify all variables of the binary program which are required to solve it optimally. Finally, we apply a branch-and-bound procedure to our resulting binary program. Additionally, we present an enhanced time discretization method to balance model size and solution quality. We apply our algorithm to realistic instances from a large international airport. An analysis of resulting model sizes proves the ability of our approach to significantly reduce the number of required variables and constraints of the time-discrete binary program. We also show that our method computes optimal schedules in a short amount of time and often outperforms a time-continuous formulation as well as a pure constraint programming approach.

Abstract: International audience; The Diels–Alder reaction kinetics between diphenylfulvene and maleimide using mechanochemistry and in liquid state is described. This reaction was carried out in solid state using a modified vibratory ball-mill with temperature control and in solution with toluene as solvent. The effect of temperature, ball mass, material, additives, and aging reaction were studied. We reported for the first time the kinetics of a mechanochemical reaction depending on the ratio ball mass/mass of the reagent. A new kinetic model has been established that corresponds well to our experimental data and allows an estimation of the global activation energy. In solution, the retro Diels–Alder reaction was observed. The reaction was second order for the formation of endo and exo and first order for the retro Diels–Alder reaction. The grinding method shows many advantages compared to solution: shorter reaction time, total reaction, and better selectivity.

Abstract: In a first contribution, we revisit two certificates of positivity on (possibly non-compact) basic semialgebraic sets due to Putinar and Vasilescu [Comptes Rendus de l'Acad\'emie des Sciences-Series I-Mathematics, 328(6) (1999) pp. 495-499]. We use Jacobi's technique from [Mathematische Zeitschrift, 237(2) (2001) pp. 259-273] to provide an alternative proof with an effective degree bound on the sums of squares multipliers in such certificates. As a consequence, it allows one to define a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations for a general polynomial optimization problem. Convergence of this hierarchy to a neighborhood of the optimal value as well as strong duality and analysis are guaranteed. In a second contribution, we introduce a new numerical method for solving systems of polynomial inequalities and equalities with possibly uncountably many solutions. Abstract: The study of lanthanide (Ln)-transition-metal (TM) heterometallic clusters which play key roles in various high-tech applications is a rapid growing field of research. Despite the achievement of numerous Ln-TM cluster compounds comprising one Ln atom, the synthesis of Ln-TM clusters containing multiple Ln atoms remains challenging. Here, we present the preparation and self-assembly of a series of Au-bridged heterometallic clusters containing multiple cerium (Ce) atoms via on-surface coordination. By employing different pyridine and nitrile ligands, the ordered coordination assemblies of clusters containing 2, 3 and 4 Ce atoms bridged by Au adatoms are achieved on Au(111) and Au(100), as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Density functional theory calculations uncover the indispensable role of the bridging Au adatoms in constructing the multi-Ce-containing clusters by connecting the Ce atoms via unsupported Ce-Au bonds. These findings demonstrate on-surface coordination as an efficient strategy for preparation and organization of the multi-Ln-containing heterometallic clusters., The preparation of lanthanide-transition metal clusters containing multiple lanthanide atoms remains challenging. Here, the authors present the controlled on-surface formation of ligand-stabilized heterometallic Ce/Au clusters containing two, three and four Ce atoms bridged by Au adatoms.

Abstract: Starphenes show promising optoelectronic properties. Notably, HOMO–LUMO energy gap presumably decreases with their increasing size, making larger homologues extremely desirable. Unfortunately, with the size, their instability and insolubility also increase, challenging classical synthetic ways. A new method has been developed, enabling synthesis of large starphenes in a quantity sufficient for their full characterisation and further applications., Starphenes are attractive compounds due to their characteristic physicochemical properties that are inherited from acenes, making them interesting compounds for organic electronics and optics. However, the instability and low solubility of larger starphene homologs make their synthesis extremely challenging. Herein, we present a new strategy leading to pristine [16]starphene in preparative scale. Our approach is based on a synthesis of a carbonyl-protected starphene precursor that is thermally converted in a solid-state form to the neat [16]starphene, which is then characterised with a variety of analytical methods, such as 13C CP-MAS NMR, TGA, MS MALDI, UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. Furthermore, high-resolution STM experiments unambiguously confirm its expected structure and reveal a moderate electronic delocalisation between the pentacene arms. Abstract: International audience; Photon bunching in incoherent cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy originates from the fact that a single high-energy electron can generate multiple photons when interacting with a material, thus, revealing key properties of electron−matter excitation. Contrary to previous works based on Monte Carlo modeling, here we present a fully analytical model describing the amplitude and shape of the second order autocorrelation function (g (2) (τ)) for continuous and pulsed electron beams. Moreover, we extend the analysis of photon bunching to ultrashort electron pulses, in which up to 500 electrons per pulse excite the sample within a few picoseconds. We obtain a simple equation relating the bunching strength (g (2) (0)) to the electron beam current, emitter decay lifetime, pulse duration, in the case of pulsed electron beams, and electron excitation efficiency (γ), defined as the probability that an electron creates at least one interaction with the emitter. The analytical model shows good agreement with the experimental data obtained on InGaN/GaN quantum wells using continuous, ns-pulsed (using beam blanker) and ultrashort ps-pulsed (using photoemission) electron beams. We extract excitation efficiencies of 0.13 and 0.05 for 10 and 8 keV electron beams, respectively, and we observe that nonlinear effects play no compelling role, even after excitation with ultrashort and dense electron cascades in the quantum wells.

Abstract: We propose a class of locally Lipschitz functions with piecewise structure for use as Lyapunov functions for hybrid dynamical systems. Subject to some regularity of the dynamics, we show that Lyapunov inequalities can be checked only on a dense set and thus we avoid checking them at points of nondifferentiability of the Lyapunov function. Abstract: The interaction of mountain terrain with meteorological processes causes substantial temporal and spatial variability in snow accumulation and ablation. Processes impacted by complex terrain include large-scale orographic enhancement of snowfall, small-scale processes such as gravitational and wind-induced transport of snow, and variability in the radiative balance such as through terrain shadowing. In this study, a multi-scale modelling approach is proposed to simulate the temporal and spatial evolution of high-mountain snowpacks. The multi-scale approach combines atmospheric data from a numerical weather prediction system at the kilometre scale with process-based downscaling techniques to drive the Canadian Hydrological Model (CHM) at spatial resolutions allowing for explicit snow redistribution modelling. CHM permits a variable spatial resolution by using the efficient terrain representation by unstructured triangular meshes. The model simulates processes such as radiation shadowing and irradiance to slopes, blowing-snow transport (saltation and suspension) and sublimation, avalanching, forest canopy interception and sublimation, and snowpack melt. Short-term, kilometre-scale atmospheric forecasts from Environment and Climate Change Canada's Global Environmental Multiscale Model through its High Resolution Deterministic Prediction System (HRDPS) drive CHM and are downscaled to the unstructured mesh scale. In particular, a new wind-downscaling strategy uses pre-computed wind fields from a mass-conserving wind model at 50 m resolution to perturb the mesoscale HRDPS wind and to account for the influence of topographic features on wind direction and speed. HRDPS-CHM was applied to simulate snow conditions down to 50 m resolution during winter 2017/2018 in a domain around the Kananaskis Valley (∼1000 km2) in the Canadian Rockies. Simulations were evaluated using high-resolution airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) snow depth data and snow persistence indexes derived from remotely sensed imagery. Results included model falsifications and showed that both wind-induced and gravitational snow redistribution need to be simulated to capture the snowpack variability and the evolution of snow depth and persistence with elevation across the region. Accumulation of windblown snow on leeward slopes and associated snow cover persistence were underestimated in a CHM simulation driven by wind fields that did not capture lee-side flow recirculation and associated wind speed decreases. A terrain-based metric helped to identify these lee-side areas and improved the wind field and the associated snow redistribution. An overestimation of snow redistribution from windward to leeward slopes and subsequent avalanching was still found. The results of this study highlight the need for further improvements of snowdrift-permitting models for large-scale applications, in particular the representation of subgrid topographic effects on snow transport.
