This study presents a comparative analysis of flood simulations using rain gauge, ground- and space-borne radar precipitation products. The objectives are to assess the effectiveness of two radar-based data sources, namely the Radar-AWS Rainrates (RAR) and Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), in a dam watershed with gauge observations, and explore the modeling feasibility of integrating the half-hourly IMERG satellite precipitation in regions with ungauged or limited observational area. Two types of HEC-HMS models were developed, considering areal-averaged and spatially distributed gridded data simulations utilizing eight selected storm events. The findings indicate that the RAR data, although slightly underestimate precipitation compared to the gauge measurements, accurately reproduce hydrographs without requiring parameter adjustments (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency, ENS, 0.863; coefficient of determination, R2, 0.873; and percent bias, PBIAS, 7.49%). On the other hand, flood simulations using the IMERG data exhibit lower model efficiency and correlation, suggesting potential limitations in ungauged watersheds. Nevertheless, with available discharge data, the calibrated model using IMERG shows prospects for utilization (ENS 0.776, R2 0.787, and PBIAS 7.15%). Overall, this research offers insights into flood simulations using various precipitation products, emphasizing the significance of reliable discharge data for accurate hydrological modeling and the need for further evaluation of the IMERG product. Site-specific estimates of precipitation can be used to assess crop productivity and identify areas vulnerable to crop damages caused by extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. Spatial interpolation of precipitation such as Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) has been used to estimate precipitation in an area of interest. However, the reliability of spatial interpolation is often affected by the availability of precipitation measurements from weather stations in a given region especially under complex terrain conditions. Here we propose an alternative approach for site-specific estimation of precipitation using both radar reflectivity data and topographic features. At first, radar reflectivity data are used as inputs to an artificial neural network (ANN) for estimation of precipitation. These radar precipitations at each grid cell are used to represent the observations at virtual weather stations for spatial interpolation using PRISM. Furthermore, the radar precipitations are compared with the observations at actual weather stations for their bias correction. This approach is referred to as PRISM and Radar Estimation for Precipitation (PREP). A case study was conducted in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea to compare the degree of agreement between PREP and PRISM. It was found that PREP had higher degree of agreement for the daily estimates of precipitation than PRISM in the given region with a complex terrain including coast and mountains. For example, the root mean square error (RMSE) of precipitation estimates for PREP was 22.1% less than that for PRISM in 2020. PREP also had greater value of the critical success index (CSI) than PRISM especially under heavy precipitation events, e.g.,>180 mm, and no rainfall conditions. Polarimetric radar systems are commonly used to study the microphysics of precipitation. While they offer continuous measurements with a large spatial coverage, retrieving information about the microphysical processes that govern the evolution of snowfall from the polarimetric signal is challenging. The present study develops a new method, called process identification based on vertical gradient signs (PIVSs), to spatially identify the occurrence of the main microphysical processes (aggregation and riming, crystal growth by vapor deposition and sublimation) in snowfall from dual-polarization Doppler radar scans. We first derive an analytical framework to assess in which meteorological conditions the local vertical gradients of radar variables reliably inform about microphysical processes. In such conditions, we then identify regions dominated by (i) vapor deposition, (ii) aggregation and riming and (iii) snowflake sublimation and possibly snowflake breakup, based on the sign of the local vertical gradients of the reflectivity ZH and the differential reflectivity ZDR. The method is then applied to data from two frontal snowfall events, namely one in coastal Adélie Land, Antarctica, and one in the Taebaek Mountains in South Korea. The validity of the method is assessed by comparing its outcome with snowflake observations, using a multi-angle snowflake camera, and with the output of a hydrometeor classification, based on polarimetric radar signal. The application of the method further makes it possible to better characterize and understand how snowfall forms, grows and decays in two different geographical and meteorological contexts. In particular, we are able to automatically derive and discuss the altitude and thickness of the layers where each process prevails for both case studies. We infer some microphysical characteristics in terms of radar variables from statistical analysis of the method output (e.g., ZH and ZDR distribution for each process). For the event in South Korea, aggregation and riming dominate between 4000 and 4800 m a.g.l., with local sublimation below and vapor deposition above. This article describes a four-month dataset of precipitation and cloud measurements collected during the International Collaborative Experiments for PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic winter games (ICE-POP 2018). This paper aims to describe the data collected by the Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The dataset includes observations from an X-band dual-polarisation Doppler radar, a W-band Doppler cloud profiler, a multi-angle snowflake camera and a two-dimensional video disdrometer (https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.918315, Gehring et al. (2020a)). Classifications of hydrometeor types derived from dual-polarisation measurements and snowflake photographs are presented. The dataset covers the period from 15 November 2017 to 18 March 2018 and features nine precipitation events with a total accumulation of 195 mm of equivalent liquid precipitation. This represents 85% of the climatological accumulation over this period. To illustrate the available data, measurements corresponding to the four precipitation events with the largest accumulation are presented. The synoptic situations of these events were contrasted and influenced the precipitation type and accumulation. The hydrometeor classifications reveal that aggregate snowflakes were dominant and that some events featured significant riming. The combination of dual-polarisation variables and high-resolution Doppler spectra with ground-level snowflake images makes this dataset particularly suited to study snowfall microphysics in a region where such measurements were not available before. Raindrop size distribution (DSD) observed using a disdrometer can be represented by a constrained-gamma (C-G) DSD model based on the empirical relationship between shape (µ) and slope (Λ). The C-G DSD model can be used to retrieve DSDs and rain microphysical parameters from dual-polarization radar measurements of reflectivity (ZH) and differential reflectivity (ZDR). This study presents a new µ-Λ relationship to characterize rain microphysics in South Korea using a two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) and Yong-in S-band dual-polarization radar. To minimize sampling errors from the 2DVD and radar measurements, measured size distributions are truncated by particle size and velocity-based filtering and compared with rain gauge measurement. The calibration biases of radar ZH and ZDR were calculated using the self-consistency constraint and vertical pointing measurements. The derived µ-Λ relationship was verified using the mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm) and standard deviation of the size distribution (σm), calculated from the 2DVD, for comparison with existing µ-Λ relationships for Florida and Oklahoma. The Dm-σm relationship derived from the 2DVD corresponded well with the µ-Λ relationship. The µ-Λ relationship derived for the Korean Peninsula was similar to Florida, and both generally had larger µ values than Oklahoma for the same Λ. The derived µ-Λ relationship was applied to retrieve DSD parameters from polarimetric radar data, and the retrieved DSDs and derived physical parameters were evaluated and compared with the 2DVD measurements. The polarization radar-based C-G DSD model characterized rain microphysics more accurately than the exponential DSD model. The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) has been developing high-frequency (HF) ocean radar for wave observation with SETsystem Inc., which had developed HF ocean radar for ocean currents. A Bayesian directional spectrum estimation method (BDM) algorithm was developed to extract wave information from HF ocean radar and tested using surface current and wave variability experiments (SCAWVEX) data. A circular array antenna was used, which has advantages in terms of smaller installation space and narrower beamwidth. The prototype of the HF ocean radar for wave was composed of BDM algorithm and circular array antenna for optimizing the observed waves. The prototype of the HF ocean radar was installed at the East Sea Research Institute, Uljin, in the Republic of Korea (ROK). A millimetre‐wave cloud radar has limitations for observing heavy rainfall because the short wavelength leads to strong attenuation from raindrops. However, recent studies have attempted to estimate the rain rate using attenuation, which becomes greater as the rain intensity increases. The rain‐rate‐retrieval algorithm is developed in the present paper using the Ka‐band cloud radar (KaCR) installed at the Boseong Global Standard Observatory (BGSO) in the Republic of Korea. First, rain profiles were identified using the threshold of reflectivity (Z) and Doppler velocity (DV) averaged for the analysis of layer that minimized the effects of the receiver saturation and classified as low or high rain‐rate cases using the averaged DV. The reflectivity and rain‐rate (Z‐R) relationship was then derived for low rain‐rate cases that showed insignificant effects for signal attenuation. On the other hand, the attenuation and rain‐rate (A‐R) relationship was derived using high rain‐rate cases that showed the dominant effects of attenuation. The attenuation was calculated using a reflectivity gradient between the upper and lower boundaries of the attenuated layer. Finally, the rain‐rate‐retrieval algorithm was designed using the derived Z‐R and A‐R relationship and then applied back to the KaCR. The estimated rain rate in the KaCR was a similar trend to the observed rain rate in the optical rain gauge (ORG), but slightly underestimated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Machine learning algorithms should be tested for use in quantitative precipitation estimation models of rain radar data in South Korea because such an application can provide a more accurate estimate of rainfall than the conventional ZR relationship-based model. The applicability of random forest, stochastic gradient boosted model, and extreme learning machine methods to quantitative precipitation estimation models was investigated using case studies with polarization radar data from Gwangdeoksan radar station. Various combinations of input variable sets were tested, and results showed that machine learning algorithms can be applied to build the quantitative precipitation estimation model of the polarization radar data in South Korea. The machine learning-based quantitative precipitation estimation models led to better performances than ZR relationship-based models, particularly for heavy rainfall events. Hallasan Mountain is located at the center of Jeju Island, Korea. Even though Hallasan Mountain has a height of just 1,950 m, the temperature during the winter decreases below −20 degrees Celsius. On the contrary, the temperature on the coastal areas remains just above freezing. Therefore, large snowfalls in the mountain and rainfall in the coastal areas are very common in Jeju Island. Most of the rain gauges are available around highly populated coastal areas, and snow measurements are available at just four locations on the coastal areas. Therefore, it is practically impossible to distinguish the rainfall and snowfall in Jeju Island. Fortunately, two radars (Seongsan and Gosan radars) operate on Jeju Island, which fully covers Hallasan Mountain. This study proposes a method of using both the radar and rain gauge information to map the snowy region in Jeju Island, including Hallasan Mountain. As a first step, this study analyzed the Z-R and Z-S relationships to derive a fixed threshold of radar reflectivity to separate snowfall from rainfall, and, in the second step, this study additionally considered the observed rain rate information to implement the problem of using the fixed threshold. This proposed method was applied to radar reflectivity data collected during November 1, 2014, to April 30, 2015, and the results indicate that the method considering both the radar and rain gauge information was satisfactory. Radar data with high spatiotemporal resolution and automatic weather station (AWS) data are used in the data assimilation experiment to improve the precipitation forecast of a numerical model. The numerical model considered in this study is the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with double-moment 6-class microphysics scheme (WDM6). We calculated the radar equivalent reflectivity factor using high resolution WRF and compared it with radar observations in South Korea. To compare the precipitation forecast characteristics of the three-dimensional variational (3D-Var) assimilation of radar data, four experiments were performed based on the scales of precipitation systems. Comparison of the 24 h accumulated rainfall with surface observation data, contoured frequency by altitude diagram (CFAD), time–height cross sections (THCS), and vertical hydrometeor profiles was used to evaluate the accuracy of the simulation of precipitation. The model simulations were performed with and without 3D-VAR radar reflectivity, radial velocity and AWS assimilation for two mesoscale convective cases and two synoptic scale cases. The combined effect of the radar and AWS data assimilation experiment improved the location of the precipitation area and rainfall intensity compared to the control run. There is a noticeable scale dependence in the improvement of precipitation systems. The mountainous Yeongdong region of South Korea contains mountains over 1 km. Owing to this topographic blockage, the region has a low-density rain-gauge network, and there is a low-altitude (~1.5 km) observation gap with the nearest large S-band radar. The Korean government installed an X-band dual-polarization radar in 2019 to improve rainfall observations and to prevent hydrological disasters in the Yeongdong region. The present study analyzed rainfall estimates using the newly installed X-band radar to evaluate its hydrological applicability. The rainfall was estimated using a distributed specific differential phase-based technique for a high-resolution 75 m grid. Comparison of the rainfall estimates of the X-band radar and the existing rainfall information showed that the X-band radar was less likely to underestimate rainfall compared to the S-band radar. The accuracy was particularly high within a 10 km observation radius. To evaluate the hydrological applicability of X-band radar rainfall estimates, this study developed a rain-based flood forecasting method—the flow nomograph—for the Samcheok-osib stream, which is vulnerable to heavy rain and resultant floods. This graph represents the flood risk level determined by hydrological–hydraulic modeling with various rainfall scenarios. Rainfall information (X-band radar, S-band radar, ground rain gauge) was applied as input to the flow nomograph to predict the flood level of the stream. The extended Kalman filter is an extended version of the Kalman filter for a non-linear problem. This study applies this extended Kalman filter to the real-time estimation of the parameters of the dual-pol radar rain rate estimator. The estimated parameters are also compared with those based on the least squares method. As an application example, this study considers four storm events observed by the Beaslesan radar in Korea. The findings derived include, first, that the parameters of the radar rain rate estimator obtained by the extended Kalman filter are totally different from those by the least squares method. In fact, the parameters obtained by the extended Kalman filter are found to be more reasonable, and are similar to those reported in previous studies. Second, the estimated rain rates based on the parameters obtained by the extended Kalman filter are found to be similar to those observed on the ground. Even though the parameters estimated by applying the least squares method are quite different from previous studies as well as those based on the extended Kalman filter, the resulting radar rain rate is found to be quite similar to that based on the extended Kalman filter. In conclusion, the extended Kalman filter can be a reliable method for real-time estimation of the parameters of the dual-pol radar rain rate estimator. A commercial aircraft, departing from Seoul to Jeju Island in South Korea, encountered a convectively induced turbulence (CIT) at about z = 2.2 km near Seoul on 28 October 2018. At this time, the observed radar reflectivity showed that the convective band with cloud tops of z = 6–7 km passed the CIT region with high values of spectral width (SW; larger than 4 m s–1). Using the 1 Hz wind data recorded by the aircraft, we estimated an objective intensity of the CIT as a cube root of eddy dissipation rate (EDR) based on the inertial range technique, which was about 0.33–0.37 m2/3 s−1. Radar-based EDR was also derived by lognormal mapping technique (LMT), showing that the EDR was about 0.3–0.35 m2/3 s−1 near the CIT location, which is consistent with in situ EDR. In addition, a feasibility of the CIT forecast was tested using the weather and research forecast (WRF) model with a 3 km horizontal grid spacing. The model accurately reproduced the convective band passing the CIT event with an hour delay, which allows the use of two methods to calculate EDR: The first is using both the sub-grid and resolved turbulent kinetic energy to infer the EDR; the second is using the LMT for converting absolute vertical velocity (and its combination with the Richardson number) to EDR-scale. As a result, we found that the model-based EDRs were about 0.3–0.4 m2/3 s−1 near the CIT event, which is consistent with the estimated EDRs from both aircraft and radar observations. The cloud measurements for two years from the vertical pointing Ka-band cloud radar at Boseong in Korea are used to analyze detailed cloud properties. The reflectivity of the cloud radar is calibrated with other vertical pointing radars compared with the two disdrometers. A simple threshold-based quality control method is applied to eliminate non-meteorological echoes (insects and noise) in conjunction with despeckling along the radial direction. Clouds are classified into five types: high (HC), middle (MC), low (LC) for non-precipitating clouds, and deep (RainDP) and shallow (RainSH) for precipitating clouds. The average cloud frequency was about 35.9% with the maximum frequency of 50% in June for the total two-year sampling period. The RainDP occurred most frequently (11.8%), followed by HC (9.3%), MC (7.4%), RainSH (4.4%), and LC (2.9%) out of the average occurrence of the total 35.9%. HC and RainDP were frequently observed in summer and autumn, while RainSH, LC, and MC were dominant in the winter due to the dominant cloud development by the air-sea interaction during the cold air outbreak. The HC showed a significant seasonal variation of the maximum height and the rapid growth in the layer above 7 km (about −15 °C) in summer and autumn. This rapid growth appears in HC, MC, LC, and RainDP and is linked with rapid increases in Doppler velocity and mass flux. Thus, this growth is originated from the dominant riming processes in addition to depositional growth and is supported by an updraft in the layer between 6 and 8 km. MC showed a single frequency peak around 6 km with rapid growth above and strong evaporation below. The Doppler velocity of MC rapidly increases above 8 km and is nearly constant below this height due to strong evaporation except in the summer. LC had a similar trend of reflectivity (rapid growth in the HC region and strong evaporation in the lower region) lacking high frequency in the MC region. Unlike LC, the RainDP had continuous growth toward the ground in the entire layer with rapid growth in the HC and MC regions. In addition, two modes (cloud and precipitation) appear on the ground in spring and fall with the vertical continuity of the high frequency in the precipitation mode. The precipitation growth was most efficient in RainSH in summer with a reflectivity gradient of about 20 dBZ km−1 and frequent updrafts larger than 1 m s−1 and was smaller in the MC and HC regions. The microphysical characteristics of a mesoscale convective system (MCS) during a summer monsoon of South Korea are investigated using the generalized drop size distributions (DSD) that are derived from S-band dual-polarization radar data. The characteristics parameters of generalized DSDs (generalized number concentration, N0′ and generalized mean diameter, Dm) are directly calculated from DSD's two moments without any assumption on the DSD model. Relationships between ZDR and generalized DSD parameters normalized by ZH are derived in the form of the polynomial equation. Verification of the retrieved DSD parameters is conducted with the 2-D video disdrometer (2DVD) located about 23 km from the radar. The standard deviations (SD) of retrieved DSD parameters are about 0.26 for log N0′, and about 0.11 for Dm because of the variability of DSDs. The SD of the retrieved log N0′ from the dual-polarimetric measurement reaches to about 0.46 (almost double) for 11 rain events while the accuracy of retrieved Dm is quite higher (~0.19). This higher error in retrieved log N0′ is likely attributed to the larger discrepancy in radar-observed and DSD-calculated ZDR when ZH is low. This retrieval technique is applied to a mesoscale convective system (MCS) case to investigate the Lagrangian characteristics of the microphysical process. The MCS is classified into the leading edge and trailing stratiform region by using the storm classification algorithm. The leading edge dominated by strong updraft showed the broad DSD spectra with a steady temporal increase of Dm throughout the event, likely because of the dominant drop growth by the collision-coalescence process. On the other hand, the drop growth is less significant in the trailing stratiform region as shown by the nearly constant Dm for the entire period. The DSD variation is also controlled by the new generation of drops in the leading edge and less extent in the trailing stratiform during the early period when precipitation systems grow. When the system weakens, the characteristic number concentration decreases with time, indicating the new generation of drops becomes less significant in both regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tools to identify and classify stratiform and convective rains at various times of the 12 days from June 2015 to March 2016 in Jincheon, Korea, were developed by using a Parsivel disdrometer and S-band polarimetric (S-POL) radar data. Stratiform and convective rains were identified using three different methods (vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR), the method proposed by Bringi et al. (BR03), and a combination of the two (BR03-VPR)) by using a Parsivel disdrometer for its applications to radar as a reference. BR03-VPR exhibits a better classification scheme than the VPR and BR03 methods. The rain types were compared using the drop size distribution (DSD) retrieved from polarimetric variables and reflectivity only. By using the DSD variables, a new convective/stratiform classification line of the log-normalized droplet number concentration ( log 10 N w) − median volume diameter ( D 0 ) was derived for this area to classify the rainfall types using DSD variables retrieved from the polarimetric radar. For the radar variables, the method by Steiner et al. (SHY95) was found to be the best method, with 0.00% misclassification of the stratiform rains. For the convective rains, the DSD retrieval method performed better. However, for both stratiform and convective rains, the fuzzy method performed better than the SHY95 and DSD retrieval methods. To investigate the impact of rainfall type on rainfall estimation using polarimetric variables, rainfall relations such as those between rain rate (R) and specific differential phase (KDP), between R and KDP/differential reflectivity (ZDR), and between R and reflectivity (Z)/ZDR, were examined with respect to the precipitation type classified using drop size distributions (DSDs) measured by a disdrometer. The classification of rainfall type was assessed using four different methods: temporal rainfall variation; and the relations between intercept parameter (N0) and R; normalized intercept parameter (Nw) and median diameter (D0); and slope parameter (Λ) and R. The logN0–R relation discriminated between convective and stratiform rain with less standard deviation than the other methods as shown by the Z–ZDR scatter with respect to the rainfall types. The transition type from convective to stratiform and vice versa occurred in the stratiform rain region for all methods. To apply the classified rainfall relations to radar rainfall estimation, logNw and D0 were retrieved from polarimetric variables to discriminate the rainfall types in the radar domain. The DSD classification was verified with the vertical profile of reflectivity extracted at two positions corresponding to gage sites. Statistical analysis of four different rainfall events showed that rainfall estimation using the relations with precipitation type were better than those obtained without classification. The R(KDP,ZDR) relation with classification performed best on rainfall estimation for all rainfall events. The greatest improvement in rainfall estimation was obtained from R(Z,ZDR) with classification. We conclude that the classification of rainfall type leads to more accurate rainfall estimation. The different relations R(KDP), R(KDP,ZDR), and R(Z,ZDR) with respect to the rain types using polarimetric radar show improvement compared to estimation without consideration of rainfall type, in Korea. Recently, a small rain radar in the 24GHz band is under development in Korea. This instrument is intended for the measurement of quantitative rainfall within a radius of 1 Km. Quantitative rainfall measurements for small watersheds are predicated on flood forecasting. The purpose of this device development was focused on the amount of rainfall reaching the ground rather than the amount of rainfall in the atmosphere. The device is currently being developed as a prototype and is undergoing various performance verification with the aim of commercialization.In this presentation, we show the comparison result of performance verification of small rain radar and show the performance superiority. In order to verify the performance of this device, it took a long time from the selection of the comparative verification site to the design and installation of a pit gauge. The comparative site was equipped with 2 parsivels, one pit gauge(composed of one weighing type of rain gauge and 12 tipping bucket type rain gauges) and 17 tipping bucket type gauges. The comparative analysis method of the measurement result converts the scanning result of this device into the reflectance and compares it with the verification device. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
