How does the introduction of information technology (IT) influence production systems? This paper reveals two important changes by introducing information technology (IT) into a production system in the case of the Japanese anime industry. In particular, it focuses on the production system and the relationship between outsourcing and in-house production. Given this objective, this research explores each process and technology of the production system. The processes that are focused in this research are the art production process, painting process and the process that follows. In addition, it examines three-dimensional computer graphics and digital sakuga (drawing) in the technology. The results of the paper elucidate the following. First, companies in Japan cannot attain successful introduction of IT until IT achieve low cost or/and high quality. Second, the process of choosing in-house production or outsourcing depends upon the following factors. Realizing the integration of multiple processes or enhancing the flexibility of the production process leads to the transition from outsourcing to in-house production. On the other hand, realizing lower cost by the delivery of digitalized data through storage media or the Internet results in the transition from in-house production to outsourcing. The separation of image content into semantic parts plays a vital role in applications such as compression, enhancement, restoration, and more. In recent years, several pioneering works suggested such a separation be based on variational fore mutation and others using independent component analysis and sparsity. This paper presents a novel method for separating images into texture and piecewise smooth (cartoon) parts, exploiting both the variational and the sparsity mechanisms. The method combines the basis pursuit denoising (BPDN) algorithm and the total-variation (TV) regularization scheme. The basic idea presented in this paper is the use of two appropriate dictionaries, one for the representation of textures and the other for the natural scene parts assumed to be piecewise smooth. Both dictionaries are chosen such that they lead to sparse representations over one type of image-content (either texture or piecewise smooth). The use of the BPDN with the two amalgamed dictionaries leads to the desired separation, along with noise removal as a by-product. As the need to choose proper dictionaries is generally hard, a TV regularization is employed to better direct the separation process and reduce ringing artifacts. We present a highly efficient numerical scheme to solve the combined optimization problem posed by our model and to show several experimental results that validate the algorithm's performance. The article discusses the publications of cartoons and caricatures in the First World War in Great Britain. It reflects on the publishing opportunities for cartoonists during the period and highlights some of their works including from Will Dyson, W. K. Haselden, and Louis Raemaekers. Also mentioned are three British wartime cartoons, "Arf a Mo', Kaiser," "Bravo, Belgium!," and "Britons-Kitchener Wants YOU."

Some facial features that differ from an ordinary face should be identified by a computer when generating a facial caricature. These distinctive facial features are called self-features. Compared with traditional Mean Face Model (MFM) that is unable to quantify these self-features well, a Self-Reference Model (SRM) is presented in this paper. Firstly, based on the physiology structure of a front face, a self-reference is found, and this reference is used to measure the self-features. According to the self-reference, some standard facial parameters are worked out by collecting statistic data of many facial images. Then, in an input face image, by evaluating some differences between the input face and the standard facial parameters, the self-features are properly estimated and quantified. Finally, by analyzing some caricatures produced by caricaturists, the SRM can prove the validity of the proposed Algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on drawings by Keith Haring. His cartoon figures are immediately recognizable to most viewers. These drawings coupled with bright, flat colors have become emblematic of the New York art world of the 1980s. As a result, Haring's art has often been interpreted as an expression of the optimistic indulgence of this period. However, one important thread from his youthful experience has been overlooked--his 1970s engagement with the Jesus Movement.

In Turkish folk culture, water is holy and described as a panacea. With the discussions on water wars, the world is trying to take precautions against the incoming disaster. Water is gradually increasing its importance as a cultural heritage and economic value and water has been a source of inspiration for caricaturists of Turkey and the world to think and draw on water concept by organizing exhibitions. In this paper, caricaturists and illustrators' works on water concept will be tried to analyze on their own perspectives. Popular caricaturists and illustrators such as Ali Kashi, Kessusanto Liusvia, R.J. Matson will find place in this paper as well as the caricaturists of Turkey such as Burhanettin Ardagil, Nuri Bilgin with their works will be examined. Water's definition with drawings will be presented with different styles of different caricaturists. The relationship of art and water, water and humor will be underlined with caricatures. The decades just before and after the founding of the American Public Health Association in 1872 saw an efflorescence of political cartooning and caricature in national-circulation weeklies. Part of the political and social critique that cartoonists and their editors provided the public focused on needs or opportunities for preventing illness and accidents. This paper presents a small selection of editorial cartoons that agitated in support of public health activities over 4 decades. The goals are to illustrate several concerns that rose to national prominence in that era, to examine the kinds of imagery that newspapers and magazine editors offered their readers, and to observe how frequently the public was encouraged 10 see politicians and commercial interests as responsible for preventable health problems. This discussion focuses exclusively on propagandistic images, leaving aside the reportorial depictions of events in the news and the neutral illustrations of methods and machines in scientific and technical publications. In recent times, the use of cartoons in the newspaper discourse has been a means of presenting the corruption, violence, marginalization and other social vices present in any society. In this vein, this paper assesses the verisimilitude of editorial cartoons in Punch newspaper. To assess the verisimilitude of the selected editorial cartoons and attempt their pragmatic analysis, nine editorial cartoons from the Punch newspaper website: www.punchng.com was analyzed using Grice's Conversational Implicature as its theoretical framework. The contexts surrounding these cartoons are prevalent issues in the Nigerian society. The analyses reveal that there are cases where by Grice's Co-operative principles were observed, flouted, violated and suspended. It also reveals that the observance of Grice's co-operative principles and the knowledge of the contextual factors surrounding the selected editorial cartoons help in proving their verisimilitude. It is believed that this paper will aid further studies in pragmatic analysis of editorial cartoons and make individuals develop more interest in reading and conducting more scholarly works on editorial cartoons. In image processing, cartoon character classification, retrieval, and synthesis are critical, so that cartoonists can effectively and efficiently make cartoons by reusing existing cartoon data. To successfully achieve these tasks, it is essential to extract visual features that comprehensively represent cartoon characters and to construct an accurate distance metric to precisely measure the dissimilarities between cartoon characters. In this paper, we introduce three visual features, color histogram, shape context, and skeleton, to characterize the color, shape, and action, respectively, of a cartoon character. These three features are complementary to each other, and each feature set is regarded as a single view. However, it is improper to concatenate these three features into a long vector, because they have different physical properties, and simply concatenating them into a high-dimensional feature vector will suffer from the so-called curse of dimensionality. Hence, we propose a semisupervised multiview distance metric learning (SSM-DML). SSM-DML learns the multiview distance metrics from multiple feature sets and from the labels of unlabeled cartoon characters simultaneously, under the umbrella of graph-based semisupervised learning. SSM-DML discovers complementary characteristics of different feature sets through an alternating optimization-based iterative algorithm. Therefore, SSM-DML can simultaneously accomplish cartoon character classification and dissimilarity measurement. On the basis of SSM-DML, we develop a novel system that composes the modules of multiview cartoon character classification, multiview graph-based cartoon synthesis, and multiview retrieval-based cartoon synthesis. In this paper, a new decomposition method is introduced that splits the image into geometric (or cartoon) and texture parts. Following a total variation based preprocesssing, the core of the proposed method is an anisotropic diffusion with an orthogonality-based parameter estimation and stopping condition. The quality criterion is defined by the theoretical assumption that the cartoon and the texture components of an image are orthogonal to each other. The article offers information on the paper presented at the Eleventh Annual Oxford Dance Symposium which tackles the ways in which dance was used in satires that is explicitly political. It examines the level of dimensions of dance provided caricaturists with a precise and resonant syntax of power and power-relations. It also mentions the caricatural appropriations of dance that are more subtle and complex in graphic satires of the period.

Recently, various personal information in daily life is stored in mobile devices with sensors. This information reflects heterogeneous aspects of personal life history. People have a tendency to record precious memories from the information in their life. However, it is difficult to extract and summarize the memories from the information. There are many useful traditional ways, such as photograph, video and diary, to record important memories. Especially, writing a diary is beloved as an effective method for a long time because of its effectiveness, remembrance, and empathy of storytelling. This paper proposes a Petri-net based method that organizes mobile contexts to an understandable and interesting story in cartoons. Petri-net based storytelling approach reduces the uncertainty in mobile environment and increases the diversity and causality of a story. The 2005 Danish cartoon controversy remains much discussed. In this paper I shift the focus of discussion from the question of speech, as to whether the cartoons constitute free, hate or even blasphemous speech, to the aspect of them as images. Substituting 'cartoons as images' for 'cartoons as speech', I interrogate an underlying assumption in the discussion that Muslim everyday life and religiosity does not provide a conscious address to images. The central effort in this paper is to show that religious texts and manuals oriented to guiding everyday life evince sensitivity to the appearance of images and their possible effects upon piety. There is recognition that images that come unbidden require attention in terms of ascertaining provenance, the correct interpretive framework and the rightful course of action. Furthermore, these texts even proffer images of their own to be consciously worked upon by believers in order to produce proper attachments to subjects of veneration. I end on the speculation that rather than see these modalities of relating to images as a minor tendency within the Islamic tradition, they may be thought of as the practice of imagination that has as strong a claim upon Muslim pursuits of religiosity as sense perceptions, intellectual cognition, even ardent faith.
