This paper presents a reflective analysis of a multi-partner, transdisciplinary research project where Nao humanoid robots were integrated into children's learning experiences at a community school. Using critical reflection as a method of inquiry principles of engaged research are conceptualised showing how they were articulated throughout the study, including how they were represented in the issues that characterised the project. A process of content analysis drawn from critical incidents told via a story-telling strategy revealed that the supportive and restrictive narratives that shaped our experience were embedded around the core principles of meeting community needs, reciprocity and boundary crossing. The complex and intersecting engagement processes necessitated skills in managing human and human-system relationships and interdependencies, temporal and spatial connections, social ecologies, ethical and practical decisions, and knowledge and inquiry tensions. The study concluded that securing institutional commitments and streamlining operational procedures are critical conditions for advancing complex, multi-partner engaged research. Additionally, guidelines to foster the development of novice educational researchers (e.g. higher degrees research students) as engaged scholars are outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Australia and New Zealand mental health policy requires consumer participation in all aspects of mental health services. Systemic participation informs and improves the quality of mental health services. Collaboration with consumer researchers should be similarly required. Enhanced understandings of collaborations are needed. Aim: To enhance understanding of the perspectives and experiences of nonconsumer researchers in working collaboratively with consumers as researchers. Method: This qualitative exploratory study involved interviews with nonconsumer mental health researchers who have worked collaboratively with consumers in research. Interviews were conducted with participants from Australia and New Zealand. Results: "Allyship" emerged as a major theme. This describes nonconsumer researchers playing an actively supportive role to facilitate opportunities for the development and growth of consumer research roles and activities. Seven subthemes were identified: establishing and supporting roles, corralling resources, guiding navigation of university systems, advocacy at multiple levels, aspiring to coproduction and consumer‐led research, extending connections and partnerships, and desire to do better. Discussion: Allyship may have an important role to play in the broader consumer research agenda and requires further consideration. Implications for practice: Embedding meaningful consumer participation within mental health services requires active consumer involvement in research. Allies can play an important facilitative role. Aim The aim of this study was to explore what data emerge when former carergivers (co-researchers) are trained to interview current care-givers about their experiences. Background Despite a trend of involving service users in conducting research interviews, there have been few examinations of how and whether a common service user identity has an impact on the data generated. Design Four co-researchers were recruited, trained and supported to conduct qualitative interviews with 11 current carers of people receiving palliative services. Conversation analysis was used to examine the conversational characteristics of the research interviews. Data were collected in 2010-2011. Results Conversation analysis identified that interactional difficulties were evident across the data. When co-researchers talked about their own experiences as carers, interviewees frequently changed the topic of conversation, thereby closing-down opportunities for further disclosure or elaboration from the interviewee about the original topic. Conclusion Conversation analysis identifies how caregiving identities are co-constructed and points where there is agreement and disagreement in the co-construction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
