This research examines the spatiotemporal characteristics of deep convection initiation (DCI) using a dataset of approximately 182,000 instances of DCI occurring over an 11‐year period in the Central United States. Spatial statistical analysis reveals differences in the frequency of DCI occurrence across the study area. Favoured areas of DCI are most common across areas of higher terrain and in proximity to the Gulf Coast, while DCI occurs less frequently over the northern Great Plains. Spatial differences in the degree of interannual variability of DCI are also noted, with higher (lower) interannual variability generally noted in areas of less (more) frequent DCI occurrence. Unsupervised machine learning is utilized to identify spatial variability in the diurnal cycle of DCI. The data and methods in this study are able to reliably identify more obvious differences in diurnal time series of DCI occurrence, while more subtle differences such as those resulting from localized or weaker mechanisms are identified less reliably. Background: Atezolizumab, one of the immune checkpoint inhibitors, has been approved as an adjuvant treatment following resection and platinum‐based chemotherapy in patients with stage II–IIIA non‐small cell lung cancer with 1% or more programmed death ligand‐1 (PD‐L1) expression. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved SP263 as a companion diagnostic assay for adjuvant treatment with atezolizumab; however, in clinical practice, the 22C3 assay is most commonly used for advanced non‐small cell lung cancer. Therefore, our study aimed to compare two PD‐L1 assays, SP263 and 22C3, to evaluate whether 22C3 could replace SP263 when deciding whether to administer adjuvant atezolizumab. Methods: We retrospectively and prospectively analyzed 98 patients who underwent surgical resection at Kanagawa Cancer Center (Japan). An immunohistochemistry assay was performed for all the cases with both SP263 and 22C3. We statistically analyzed the concordance of PD‐L1 expression between SP263 and 22C3 assays. Results: The concordance between the two assays using Cohen's kappa was κ = 0.670 (95% CI: 0.522–0.818) at the 1% cutoff and κ = 0.796 (95% CI: 0.639–0.954) at the 50% cutoff. The Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.874 (p < 0.01) indicated high concordance. PD‐L1 expression with 22C3 resulted slightly higher than that with SP263. Conclusions: This study showed a high concordance of PD‐L1 expression with the SP263 and 22C3 assays. Further studies examining the therapeutic effects of adjuvant atezolizumab are required. This Committee Report provides methodological, interpretive, and reporting guidance for researchers who use measures of heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) in psychophysiological research. We provide brief summaries of best practices in measuring HR and HRV via electrocardiographic and photoplethysmographic signals in laboratory, field (ambulatory), and brain‐imaging contexts to address research questions incorporating measures of HR and HRV. The Report emphasizes evidence for the strengths and weaknesses of different recording and derivation methods for measures of HR and HRV. Along with this guidance, the Report reviews what is known about the origin of the heartbeat and its neural control, including factors that produce and influence HRV metrics. The Report concludes with checklists to guide authors in study design and analysis considerations, as well as guidance on the reporting of key methodological details and characteristics of the samples under study. It is expected that rigorous and transparent recording and reporting of HR and HRV measures will strengthen inferences across the many applications of these metrics in psychophysiology. The prior Committee Reports on HR and HRV are several decades old. Since their appearance, technologies for human cardiac and vascular monitoring in laboratory and daily life (i.e., ambulatory) contexts have greatly expanded. Introduction Material and Methods Results Conclusions Human papillomavirus (HPV) diagnosis has a considerable emotional and psychological impact on women. To evaluate the impairment this infection leads to regarding quality of life (QoL), several scales have been suggested, such as the human‐papillomavirus‐quality‐of‐life (HPV‐QoL) questionnaire. This has been validated for the Spanish population and measures the impact of HPV on health‐related‐quality‐of‐life (HR‐QoL). However, normative values are yet to be developed. Thus, the objective was to describe the population‐based norms of the HPV‐QoL for Spanish women aged 25–65 years and to test the questionnaire's construct validity.This was a cross‐sectional nationwide multicenter study. Women from outpatient clinics in Spain aged 25–65 years, with a diagnosis of past or active HPV infection were recruited. The central tendency, dispersion, and percentiles were calculated for the total score and its dimensions for each age group. Construct validity was tested by analyzing age groups and their correlations with other related scales (12‐Item General Health Questionnaire [GHQ‐12], Female Sexual Function Index [FSFI], and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale [HADS]).A total of 1352 women were included in the study. The norms showed moderate and significant coefficients of correlation with other related scales. Significant differences between age strata groups were found according to educational level, sexual dysfunction, sexual activity, mental deterioration, and severity of anxiety and depression symptoms (p < 0.001 in all cases). The total score differed significantly between the groups (p = 0.006). Significant differences in the contagiousness, health, and sexuality dimensions (p < 0.05) were found among the groups. It was seen that HPV infection impaired women's QoL. Dimensions within all test age groups (p < 0.001 in all cases) were significantly different, with the health dimension being the highest contributor to women's QoL impairment, whereas social well‐being was the main determinant of QoL.Population‐based norms for the novel HPV‐QoL questionnaire showed adequate validity and could be a useful tool for assessing the impact of QoL among women with HPV in Spain. Objective: The mechanism of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in thrombosis in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) is still unclear. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between ADMA and indicators of prethrombotic state in NVAF patients and to analyze the predictive role of ADMA in NVAF thrombosis. Methods: A total of 192 NVAF patients were continuously selected from January 2023 to October 2023. Plasma ADMA levels were measured by high‐performance liquid chromatography. P‐selectin (P‐sel), von Willebrand factor (vWF), D‐dimer (D‐D), and plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 (PAI‐1) levels were measured by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Nitric oxide (NO) levels were measured by the nitrate reductase assay for plasma nitrite/nitrate, then the Griess method (Shanghai Hailian Biotechnology Co., Shanghai, China) was used to calculate plasma NO levels. Results: In our study, ADMA levels were significantly elevated and positively correlated with P‐sel, vWF, D‐D, and PAI‐1, whereas NO levels were significantly negatively correlated with these prethrombotic factors in NVAF. Furthermore, multifactorial logistic regression analysis showed that ADMA and LA diameter were independent predictors of high thrombosis risk (CHA2DS2‐VASc ≥2 score) in patients with NVAF. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that ADMA correlated with the prethrombotic state in NVAF and that reduction of ADMA levels in NVAF patients may be a novel therapeutic strategy for thrombosis risk reduction. Objective: To assess whether systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may be genetically causally associated with migraine, including the two primary subtypes: migraine with aura (MWA) and migraine without aura (MWoA). Background: The association between SLE and migraine has been investigated extensively. Previous studies have shown a higher prevalence of migraine in patients with SLE, although the exact relationship remains unclear. This study investigated the potential causal association between SLE and migraine using the powerful analytical tool of Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods: We performed two‐sample MR analysis of publicly available summary statistic datasets using inverse variance‐weighted (IVW), weighted median, and MR‐Egger methods based on an SLE genome‐wide association study (GWAS; 5201 cases; 9066 controls; the exposure frequency is 36.5%) as an exposure and migraine GWAS (15,905 cases; 264,662 controls) in individuals with European ancestry as outcomes, focusing on the two migraine subtypes MWA (6780 cases; 264,662 controls) and MWoA (5787 cases; 264,662 controls). Thepleiotropy and heterogeneity were performed. Results: We selected 42 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms from SLE GWAS as instrumental variables (IVs) for SLE on migraine, and 41 SNP IVs for SLE on MWA or MWoA. The IVW (odds ratio [OR] = 1.01, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.99, 1.03], p = 0.271), weighted median (OR = 1.00, 95% CI = [0.97, 1.03], p = 0.914), and MR‐Egger (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = [0.99, 1.09], p = 0.153) methods showed no causal effect of SLE on migraine. A causal effect of SLE was observed on MWA (IVW: OR = 1.05, 95% CI = [1.02, 1.08], p = 0.001; weighted median: OR = 1.05, 95% CI = [1.01, 1.10], p = 0.018; MR‐Egger: OR = 1.07, 95% CI = [1.01, 1.14], p = 0.035 and pIVW < 0.017 [Bonferroni correction]) but not MWoA (IVW: OR = 0.99, 95% CI = [0.96, 1.02], p = 0.331; weighted median: OR = 0.98, 95% CI = [0.94, 1.03], p = 0.496; MR‐Egger: OR = 1.02, 95% CI = [0.95, 1.09], p = 0.652). The results showed no significant pleiotropy or heterogeneity. Conclusion: Our MR analysis demonstrated the complex relationship between SLE and migraine, suggesting a potential effect of SLE on the risk of MWA but not MWoA. These findings can aid in the development of improved subtype‐specific management of migraine in patients with SLE. Background: Delirium is common in older inpatients, causing distress, cognitive decline, and death. Current therapies are unsatisfactory, limited by lack of efficacy and adverse effects. There is an urgent need for effective delirium treatment. Sleep wake cycle is disturbed in delirium; endogenous Melatonin is perturbed, and exogenous Melatonin is a safe and effective medication for sleep disorders. This study aims to determine the effect of oral Melatonin 5 mg immediate release (IR) nightly for five nights on the severity of delirium in older (≥65 years) medical inpatients. Methods: This was a double‐blinded, randomized controlled trial in general internal medicine units of a tertiary teaching hospital. Older inpatients with Confusion Assessment Method positive, hyperactive or mixed delirium within 48 h of admission or onset of in‐hospital delirium were included. The primary outcome was change in delirium severity measured with the Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale (MDAS). A previous pilot trial showed 120 participants randomized 1:1 to Melatonin or Placebo would provide 90% power to demonstrate a 3‐point reduction in the MDAS. Results: One hundred and twenty participants were randomized, 61 to Melatonin 5 mg and 59 to Placebo. The medication was well tolerated. The mean MDAS improvement was 4.9 (SD 7.6) in the Melatonin group and 5.4 (SD 7.2) in the Placebo group, p‐value 0.42, a non‐significant difference. A post‐hoc analysis showed length of stay (LOS) was shorter in the intervention group (median 9 days [Interquartile Range (IQR) 4, 12] vs. Placebo group 10 [IQR 6, 16] p‐value = 0.033, Wilcoxon Rank Sum test). Conclusions: This trial does not support the hypothesis that Melatonin reduces the severity of delirium. This may be due to no effect of Melatonin, a smaller effect than anticipated, an effect not captured on a multidimensional delirium assessment scale, or a type II statistical error. The 2015 Transparent Reporting of a multivariable prediction model for Individual Prognosis Or Diagnosis (TRIPOD) Statement was published to improve reporting transparency for prediction modeling studies. The objective of this review is to highlight methodologic challenges that aging‐focused researchers will encounter when designing and reporting studies involving prediction models for older adults and provide guidance for addressing these challenges. In following the 22‐item TRIPOD checklist, researchers must consider the representativeness of cohorts used (e.g., whether older adults with frailty, cognitive impairment, and social isolation were included), strategies for incorporating common geriatric predictors (e.g., age, comorbidities, functional status, and frailty), methods for handling missing data and competing risk of death, and assessment of model performance heterogeneity across important subgroups (e.g., age, sex, race, and ethnicity). We provide guidance to help aging‐focused researchers develop, validate, and report models that can inform and improve patient care, which we label "TRIPOD‐65." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measuring success plays a central role in justifying and advocating for a statistical or data science consulting or collaboration program (SDSP) within an academic institution. We present several specific metrics to report to targeted audiences to tell the story for success of a robust and sustainable program. While gathering such metrics includes challenges, we discuss potential data sources and possible practices for SDSPs to inform their own approaches. Emphasizing essential metrics for reporting, we also share the metric gathering and reporting practices of two programs in greater detail. New or existing SDSPs should evaluate their local environments and tailor their practice to gathering, analysing and reporting success metrics accordingly. This approach provides a strong foundation to use success metrics to tell compelling stories about the SDSP and enhance program sustainability. The area of success metrics provides ample opportunity for future research projects that leverage qualitative methods and consider mechanisms for adapting to the changing landscape of data science. Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a highly impairing condition with important public health impacts. Despite the availability of treatment options for AUD, research shows that few people receive treatment, and even fewer can maintain abstinence/low‐drinking levels. This study investigated the role of personality traits in past‐year alcohol use among individuals with severe AUD who ever attended Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a widespread and easily accessible self‐help group for alcohol problems. Methods: Univariable and multivariable regressions were performed separately in females and males with alcohol consumption as an outcome. Socioeconomic factors, genetic liability, and psychopathology were included as covariates in the analyses. Results: Results from the multivariable model indicated that in females who attended AA, greater alcohol use was related to both positive and negative urgency and low sensation seeking, while in males, greater alcohol use was related to positive urgency. Results also showed that, in both sexes, younger age and lower educational levels were associated with greater alcohol use. Moreover, single males and individuals with lower AUD severity were at higher risk of using alcohol in the past year. Conclusions: These findings highlight sex‐specific correlates of drinking in individuals with AUD who engaged in self‐help groups. These findings may help to improve treatment options, as personality encompasses modifiable traits that can be targeted in psychological interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Chronic alcohol consumption is a major public health issue. The primary organ damaged by alcohol abuse is the liver, leading to alcohol‐associated liver disease (ALD). ALD begins with hepatic steatosis and can progress to fibrosis and cirrhosis; however, we have an incomplete understanding of ALD pathogenesis. Interestingly, the liver is also the major organ for vitamin A metabolism and storage, and ALD has previously been linked with altered hepatic vitamin A homeostasis. We hypothesize that alcohol‐induced vitamin A depletion disrupts its normal function in the liver, contributing to the pathogenesis of ALD. To test this hypothesis, we postulated that adding copious vitamin A to the diet might alleviate ALD, and conversely, that a vitamin A deficient diet would worsen ALD. Methods: We conducted two dietary intervention studies in mice comparing deficient (0 IU/g diet) and copious (25 IU/g diet) dietary vitamin A intake versus control (4 IU/g diet), using the NIAAA chronic‐binge model of ALD. Hepatic steatosis was assessed using histopathological and biochemical approaches. Tissue Vitamin A levels were measured using high‐performance liquid chromatography. Markers of ALD, hepatic inflammation and lipid metabolism were analyzed by the quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. Results: As expected, a 0 IU/g Vitamin A diet decreased, and a 25 IU/g Vitamin A diet increased hepatic Vitamin A stores. However, alcohol induced changes in hepatic triglyceride levels, markers of hepatic lipid metabolism, inflammation and fibrosis were not significantly different in mice consuming a copious or deficient vitamin A diet compared to control. Conclusions: Altered vitamin A intake and hepatic vitamin A storage have a minor effect on the pathogenesis of ALD. Thus, given the known link between altered retinoic acid signaling and ALD, future studies that further explore this linkage are warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: We previously reported that binge ethanol induces atrophy of the spleen, a key immune organ, in adolescent male F344 rats. Because there are significant sex effects in immune function, we investigated whether binge ethanol exerts sex‐dependent effects on the spleen, including producing splenic atrophy. Methods: We gave F344 rats ethanol (4.8 g/kg/day; 52% w/v; i.g.) on postnatal days [PND] 36 ~ 38 and sacrificed them on PND 39 for spleen collection. We performed immunophenotyping analysis of splenic cells and examined the expression of 158 genes related to alcohol metabolism, epigenetic modification, and immune regulation in the spleens of adolescent (PND 39) male and female rats. Results: Following a 3‐day ethanol exposure, a loss of body weight, and absolute and relative spleen weight, was seen only in male adolescent rats. Ethanol altered the relative proportions of lymphocyte subtypes in both sexes with different patterns. We also found that 3‐day ethanol exposure induced sex‐dependent gene expression changes in spleen. Among the 158 genes studied, the expression of only three genes was significantly increased in female rats. However, the expression of 30 genes was significantly increased/decreased in male rats. Female rats had greater expression of alcohol metabolizing enzyme genes in the spleen under physiological conditions and when stimulated by binge ethanol. The genes are involved in epigenetic modification were differentially expressed in a sex‐dependent manner. Conclusion: We found that male adolescent rats were more sensitive to binge ethanol than female rats. Differential expression of the genes related to alcohol metabolism and epigenetic modification (of DNA methyltransferase and histone deacetylases) between the sexes could account for the observed sex‐dependent responses to binge ethanol in adolescent rats. Background: Enhanced liver fibrosis (ELF) score is an accurate, noninvasive test for assessing the severity of liver fibrosis in chronic liver disease, including alcohol‐related liver disease. However, whether the ELF score changes during alcohol withdrawal is unknown. This pilot study assessed changes in the ELF score during withdrawal in patients with a history of excessive alcohol intake. Methods: In this prospective study, ELF was performed on day 0 (D0, at the beginning of hospitalization), at day 7 (D7, on discharge from hospital), and at follow‐up visits on days 30 (D30) and 90 (D90). Transient elastography (TE) was also assessed on days 4 (D4) and D30. Results: The study included 35 patients (71% male) with a mean alcohol intake of 139 g/day. On D30 and D90, 8 and 13 patients had resumed alcohol consumption (mean intake of 90 and 80 g/day, respectively). In patients who remained abstinent, the mean ELF score was 8.93 on D0, 9.14 on D30 (p = 0.32), and 9.27 on D90 (p = 0.14). In patients who resumed alcohol, mean ELF score was 9.7 on D0, 10.05 on D30 (p = 0.09), and 9.71 on D90 (p = 0.12). ELF score was comparable over the first months after withdrawal, although there was a slight increase in the first week (mean ELF score increased from 9.24 on D0 to 9.74 on D7, p < 0.001). Mean TE value was 7.9 kPa on D4 and 8.1 kPa on D30 (p = 0.84) in patients who resumed alcohol consumption, and 8.3 and 7.5 kPa (p = 0.03) on D4 and D30, respectively, in abstinent patients. Conclusion: The ELF score is stable during the first months after withdrawal and thus appears to be a useful tool to assess liver fibrosis or cirrhosis in this setting. Adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) post-stroke is often problematic, despite potential benefits. This study aimed to evaluate CPAP adherence in patients with OSA post-stroke based on the Andersen behavioral model of health services utilization. A total of 227 eligible participants were recruited from a Chinese hospital. After baseline assessment, participants were followed for 6 months to determine short-term CPAP adherence. Those with good short-term adherence were followed for an additional 6 months to explore long-term adherence and influencing factors. Short-term CPAP adherence rate was 33%. Being married or living with a partner, having an associate degree or baccalaureate degree or higher, and stronger health beliefs independently predicted short-term CPAP adherence. Only 25% of participants from the adherent group showed good long-term adherence. The factor associated with long-term CPAP adherence was participants not using alcohol. Adherence to CPAP is suboptimal among patients having OSA post-stroke. Addressing unfavorable predisposing factors and modifying health beliefs are suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to determine the effect of fluid management, symptom control, and quality of life on education based on the Roy Adaptation Model. This randomized controlled study was conducted with the participation of 107 patients (53 intervention, 54 control). Data were collected using the "Patient Data Collection Form," "Fluid Control in Hemodialysis Patients Scale," "Dialysis Symptom Index," and "Nottingham Health Profile." The forms were filled out through face-to-face interviews with the patients in the intervention and control groups at the 0th (onset), 1st, and 3rd months. The patients in the intervention group were trained with an education booklet based on the Roy Adaptation Model. The results revealed that the education given according to the Roy Adaptation Model improved the compliance with fluid control, quality of life, and symptom control of hemodialysis patients. It is recommended that education based on the Roy Adaptation Model be systematically used by hemodialysis nurses. Active migration and globalization have led to increased opportunities for critical care nurses to care for patients from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. This study thus aimed to identify the individual, interpersonal, and organizational factors affecting cultural competence levels among neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses based on an ecological model. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study that included 135 NICU nurses in South Korea. A hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis was conducted using the proposed ecological model, and a regression model for each of the four subdomains of cultural competence was constructed and compared. NICU nurses' cultural competencies were influenced not only by the "necessity of multicultural education" and "ethnocultural empathy" at the individual level but by the "hospital's readiness and support for cultural competencies" at the organizational level. To promote the cultural competence of nurses in critical care settings, environmental and organizational support should be improved, along with developing strategies that focus on nurses' individual characteristics. Lower extremity injuries are prevalent in military trainees, especially in female and older trainees. Modifiable factors that lead to higher injury risk in these subgroups are not clear. The purpose of this study was to identify whether external loading variables during military‐relevant tasks differ by age and sex in U.S. Army trainees. Data was collected on 915 trainees in the first week of Basic Combat Training. Participants performed running and ruck marching (walking with 18.1 kg pack) on a treadmill, as well as double‐/single‐leg drop landings. Variables included: vertical force loading rates, vertical stiffness, first peak vertical forces, peak vertical and resultant tibial accelerations. Comparisons were made between sexes and age groups (young, ≤19 years; middle, 20–24 years; older, ≥25 years). Significant main effects of sex were found, with females showing higher vertical loading rates during ruck marching, and peak tibial accelerations during running and ruck marching (p ≤ 0.03). Males showed higher vertical stiffness during running and peak vertical tibial accelerations during drop landings (p < 0.01). A main effect of age was found for vertical loading rates during running (p = 0.03), however no significant pairwise differences were found between age groups. These findings suggest that higher external loading may contribute to higher overall injury rates in female trainees. Further, higher stiffness during running may contribute to specific injuries, such as Achilles Tendinopathy, that are more prevalent in males. The lack of differences between age groups suggests that other factors contribute more to higher injury rates in older trainees. Highlights: Female trainees showed higher lower extremity loading during running and ruck marching that may predispose them to higher rates of musculoskeletal injury during initial‐entry training.Male trainees showed higher stiffness during running, which may relate to an increased risk of specific musculoskeletal injuries that are more prevalent in males, such as Achilles tendinopathy.Overall, older trainees did not show different lower extremity loading patterns compared to younger, suggesting that these factors are not related to the increased risk for musculoskeletal injury in older trainees. Background: Chemotherapy‐induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a debilitating disturbance among patients who received chemotherapy, with no effective treatment available. Scrambler therapy (ST) is a noninvasive treatment capable of improving multiple quality‐of‐life symptoms beyond pain. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ST for pain and nonpain symptoms related to CIPN. Methods: Ten patients with moderate to severe CIPN symptoms for >3 months were enrolled in a single‐arm trial of ST for 10 daily sessions. CIPN‐related symptoms were measured throughout the treatment period and up to 6 months thereafter. Results: The worst pain was reduced by 6 months (p = 0.0039). QST demonstrated the greatest improvement in pressure of 60 g (p = 0.308, Cohen's d = 0.42) and cold temperature threshold of 2.5°C (p = 0.9375, Cohen's d = 0.51) in the gastrocnemius area. Symptoms of numbness, tingling, trouble walking, and disturbed sleep had significant improvements at 6 months. Pain medication use decreased by 70% at the end of treatment and by 42% at 6 months. Patient satisfaction was high (82%) and no adverse events with ST treatment were reported. Conclusions: The results of this pilot trial support the use of ST by demonstrating improvement in multiple domains of quality of life for CIPN patients during an extended follow‐up of 6 months. It has been argued that habitually appraising stressful events as more of a threat (i.e., situational demands exceed personal coping resources) may increase one's risk of ill‐health (e.g., depression). However, while first theorized 15 years ago, little research has tested this assertion. Thus, this study offered a novel test of the associations between trait challenge and threat appraisals and health‐related outcomes (i.e., mental health symptomology, psychological well‐being, and physical health complaints). Three hundred and ninety‐five participants (251 female, 144 male; Mage = 22.50 years, SD = 5.33) completed valid and reliable measures of trait challenge and threat appraisals, mental health (i.e., symptoms of depression and anxiety), well‐being (e.g., subjective vitality), and physical health complaints (e.g., respiratory illnesses). Regression analyses revealed that trait challenge and threat appraisals accounted for a significant proportion of variance in all outcomes after controlling for age and gender, with a tendency to appraise stressful events as more of a threat associated with poorer mental health (i.e., greater depression symptomology), well‐being (e.g., lower vitality), and physical health (e.g., more respiratory illnesses). Taken together, the findings highlight the importance of trait challenge and threat appraisals for health, although further research is needed using stronger designs (e.g., longitudinal) to enable a more causal understanding. This study aimed to examine attachment and adult separation anxiety (ASA) among women who lost a parent in their youth. We hypothesized that insecure attachment and increased ASA from a romantic partner would be found among women who have lost a parent in youth, compared to women whose parents were both alive. Sixty women who lost one or both parents in their youth and 60 who had living parents participated in the study (mean age: 32.3, range: 18–62 years). Participants filled out the ASA and Short Attachment questionnaires. Women who lost a parent reported higher levels of anxious attachment and ASA from partner; the two groups did not differ, however, in terms of avoidant attachment. Additionally, similar effects on ASA and attachment were found among adult women who lost a father or a mother in their youth. Disasters can lead to decreased functionality in medical practice. This study aimed to quantitatively measure presenteeism and to determine the role of coping strategies among disaster‐victim doctors living in a city affected by the 2023‐Turkey earthquakes. This cross‐sectional study included 220 doctors reached through social media groups using the convenience sampling method. A weak negative relationship was found between presenteeism and positive re‐evaluation, one of the coping strategies with earthquake stress. A weak negative correlation was found between the Positive Reappraisal sub‐dimension score of the Coping with Earthquake Stress Scale (CESS) and presenteeism (r = −0.299, p < 0.001). In the linear regression analysis, the sub‐dimensions that contributed significantly to the model were found to be the Positive Reappraisal sub‐dimensions of CESS, whose increase resulted in a decrease in presenteeism and Seeking Social Support sub‐dimension, whose increase caused an increase in presenteeism. Presenteeism was higher in those who lost their loved ones, had damage in their workplace/home, and thought they were helpless or in danger. Both material and emotional factors decreased functionality at work after an earthquake. The COVID‐19 pandemic has determined a considerable increase in psychological distress worldwide. Compared with the general population, patients with chronic conditions experience higher stress levels due to the increased risk of worse health outcomes from COVID‐19 infection. Worries and fear of contagion could cause them to avoid going to their health facilities for medical examinations, which results in higher risks of morbidity and mortality. The present study aimed to develop and validate the Psychological Consequences of a Pandemic Event (PCPE) self‐report questionnaire, and to assess the psychological effects of exposure to a pandemic on mood and on treatment adherence appropriate for patients with chronic diseases. Data were analysed with Rasch analysis after an Exploratory Factor Analysis and a Confirmatory Factor Analysis. We identified a final set of 10 items, divided into two independent factors labelled "pandemic‐related anxiety" and "confidence in care". Finally, we transformed the raw scores of both factors into two interval scales (two rulers) that met the requirements of the fundamental measurement. The PCPE questionnaire has demonstrated to be a short and easy‐to‐administer measure, with valid and reliable psychometric properties, capable of assessing pandemic‐related anxiety and confidence in care in patients with chronic clinical conditions. The present study harnessed job demands‐resources theory to identify key predictors of psychological strain (feeling overwhelmed by one's problems) and life satisfaction among a sample of 1060 adults randomly selected from the Australian electoral roll. The investigation sought to ascertain: (a) the relative contribution of health demands (e.g., inadequate health treatment) and health resources (e.g., access to helpful health‐related information) in predicting psychological strain and life satisfaction, (b) the extent to which a recently proposed personal resource—adaptability—explained variance in wellbeing beyond individuals' health demands and resources, and (c) the role of psychological strain in predicting life satisfaction in the context of these demands and resources. Applying structural equation modelling we found that contextual health demands predicted greater psychological strain, individual health resources and adaptability both predicted lower psychological strain and greater life satisfaction, and psychological strain predicted lower life satisfaction. Notably, the adverse effects of health demands reduced significantly when health resources and adaptability were entered into the modelling. Taken together, the findings offer support for a health demands‐resources framework that may be applied to better support individuals to respond to the stressors in their lives and in turn boost their sense of subjective wellbeing. MicroRNA (miRNA), a type of non‐coding RNA, is known to suppress the expression of target genes and there is an increasing number of studies analyzing various miRNAs in cancer. In an integrated analysis of miRNA and gene expressions, it is often difficult to obtain a significant result with a small amount of data. In this study, we proposed a method that allows integrated analysis even with a small amount of miRNA and gene expression data, and examined its validity. The method is based on a group comparison between target genes having specific functions controlled by a specific miRNA and a background group of randomly selected genes. We conducted a simulation to verify the validity of the proposed method. The simulation results indicated that the method can detect significant differences in expression of target genes controlled by a miRNA showing significant expression change. We then applied the proposed method to real data derived from multiple myeloma cells. As a result, some functions were detected as significantly changed due to a significant change of miRNA. We establish higher dimensional versions of a recent theorem by Chen and Haynes [Int. J. Number Theory 19 (2023), 1405–1413] on the expected value of the smallest denominator of rational points in a randomly shifted interval of small length, and of the closely related 1977 Kruyswijk–Meijer conjecture recently proved by Balazard and Martin [Bull. Sci. Math. 187 (2023), Paper No. 103305]. We express the distribution of smallest denominators in terms of the void statistics of multidimensional Farey fractions and prove convergence of the distribution function and certain finite moments. The latter was previously unknown even in the one‐dimensional setting. We furthermore obtain a higher dimensional extension of Kargaev and Zhigljavsky's work on moments of the distance function for the Farey sequence [J. Parents, especially mothers, and young women without children, face a subtle threat in job interviews: being asked inappropriate questions about parental status. In three vignette experiments (N = 760), we compared personal (perceived likability and likelihood of being hired) and social consequences (perceived chances that the interviewer will ask the inappropriate question again) of different response strategies. Results suggest that deflection (i.e., responding with another question) is a superior strategy at the personal level, as it increases the perceived chances to be hired in comparison to truth‐telling (Study 1) and confrontation (Studies 1–3) without hurting likability (Study 1). Confrontation (i.e., saying that the question is inappropriate) is a superior strategy at the social level, decreasing the perceived probability that the interviewer will keep asking inappropriate questions in comparison to deflection (Studies 2 and 3) and truth‐telling (Study 3). Introduction: Immune dysregulation persists in people with HIV (PWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and may lead to accelerated vascular ageing and cardiovascular disease (CVD). While delayed time to initiation of ART has been linked to worse cardiovascular outcomes, the effect of ART initiation during acute infection on these outcomes is not well understood. Methods: Participants were enrolled from the SEARCH010/RV254 acute HIV (AHI) and HIV‐NAT chronic HIV (CHI) cohorts in Thailand. Participants with 6‐year follow‐up and viral suppression (viral load < 50 copies/μL) at follow‐up were included. Both unmatched cohorts and age and gender‐matched cohorts were analysed. Demographics, HIV laboratories, and cardiovascular risk factors from enrolment and 6‐year follow‐up were obtained from electronic records. Framingham Risk Score (FRS), vascular age (VA), vascular age deviation (VAD), and 10‐year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk were calculated from previously published equations. Vascular outcomes in AHI and CHI cohorts were compared, and univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to investigate risk factors associated with worse vascular scores. Results: In all, 373 AHI participants and 608 CHI participants were identified. AHI participants were of younger age, had a higher prevalence of syphilis and a lower prevalence of prior hepatitis B, tuberculosis, diabetes, and hypertension. Higher CD4 T‐cell and lower CD8 T‐cell counts were seen in the AHI cohort at enrolment and 6‐year follow‐up. In all participants, the AHI cohort had a lower median FRS (p < 0.001) and VA (p < 0.001), but higher VAD (p < 0.001). However, in matched cohorts, no differences were found in FRS‐based outcomes. In all participants, higher VAD after 6 years of ART was associated with higher body mass index (p < 0.001) and higher CD4 count (p < 0.001), which persisted in multivariable analysis. When FRS components were analysed individually, CD4 count was associated only with male sex and cholesterol. Conclusions: We did not identify differences in FRS‐based vascular outcomes at 6 years in matched cohorts of participants who started ART during AHI versus CHI. We identified a correlation between higher CD4 count and worse FRS‐based vascular outcomes, which may be driven by underlying metabolic risk factors. Introduction: Dolutegravir + rilpivirine (DTG + RPV) is an effective antiretroviral therapy regimen approved in clinical guidelines as a switch therapy for virologically suppressed people with HIV. Our study aimed to compare the effectiveness and tolerability of DTG + RPV in women and men in real‐world clinical practice. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of treatment‐experienced people with HIV from a large HIV unit who switched to DTG + RPV. We analysed treatment effectiveness, rates of adverse events and discontinuation, and metabolic changes after 48 weeks of treatment. HIV‐RNA levels <50 copies/mL were analysed at 48 weeks using both intention‐to treat analysis (where missing data were interpreted as failures) and per‐protocol analysis (excluding those with missing data or changes due to reasons other than virological failure). Outcomes were compared between women and men based on sex at birth. Results: A total of 307 patients were selected (71 women and 236 men). No transgender people were included. At baseline, women had lived with HIV infection and received antiretroviral therapy for longer than men (23.2 vs 17.4 years and 18.9 vs 14.2 years, respectively). In the intention‐to‐treat analysis, 74.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 63.4–83.3%) of women and 83.5% (95% CI 78.2–87.7) of men had HIV‐RNA <50 copies/mL. In the per‐protocol analysis, 96.4% (95% CI 87.7–99) of women and 99% (95% CI 98.9–99.7) of men had HIV‐RNA levels <50 copies/mL. Two women and two men had HIV‐RNA >50 copies/mL at 48 weeks. Discontinuation due to adverse events was more frequent in women than in men: 12.7% vs 7.2% (p < 0.02). Neuropsychiatric and gastrointestinal events were the most frequently reported. A median (interquartile range) weight gain of 1.9 kg (0–4.2) in women and 1.2 kg (−1–3.1) in men was reported (median of differences between baseline visit and week 48); the remaining changes in metabolic parameters were neutral. Conclusions: DTG + RPV exhibited good and similar virological effectiveness in women and men in real‐world settings. This pilot study aimed to assess the impact of substituting a traditional lunch for a vegetarian legume‐based meal on blood and anthropometric parameters in a group of omnivorous adults. A one‐group comparison, quasi‐experimental dietary intervention was designed. A vegetarian legume‐based meal was offered for 8 consecutive weeks (weekdays) to non‐vegetarian individuals (n = 26), (28 years [P25 = 20.0, P75 = 35.5]; 21.9 kg/m2 [P25 = 21.3, P75 = 24.8]). Sociodemographic data, health status and lifestyle‐related information were recorded. Three‐day food records were used to collect food intake at baseline and at the end of the intervention. Anthropometric parameters were recorded and fasting blood analyses were performed following standard procedures. Wilcoxon signed‐rank test was used for statistical comparisons. A p‐value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Participants showed a median intake of 79.8 g of cooked legumes per meal, meaning 13 (50.0%) subjects met the Portuguese daily legume intake recommendations during the intervention days. There were no statistically significant differences in anthropometric parameters. Transferrin concentration increased after 8 weeks (+12.5 mg/dL; p = 0.001). Total cholesterol concentration reduced after 8 weeks (−6 mg/dL; p = 0.041), as well as low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (−7 mg/dL; p = 0.003). Triglycerides (+9 mg/dL; p = 0.046), fasting glucose (+2 mg/dL; p = 0.037) and HbA1c (+0.1 mg/dL; p = 0.010) concentration increased after the 2‐month legume‐based trial. Results suggest a cholesterol‐lowering potential of legume‐rich diets. However, unfavourable results regarding the impact on glucose metabolism‐related biomarkers and triglyceride levels were observed. Aims: To explore the relationship between nutritional intake, fermentable oligo‐, di, monosaccharides and polyols, and carbohydrate malabsorption, with gastrointestinal symptoms during a 56 km trail ultramarathon event and identify differences in nutritional intake between runners with severe and non‐severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Methods: Forty‐four ultramarathoners recorded and self‐reported dietary intake 3 days before, morning of, and during the ultramarathon with gastrointestinal symptoms obtained retrospectively and nutrient analysis via FoodWorks. Carbohydrate malabsorption was determined via breath hydrogen content pre‐ and post‐race. Spearman's rank‐order and Mann–Whitney U‐tests were used to identify relationships and differences between groups. Results: Total fermentable oligo‐, di, monosaccharides and polyols intake were not associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, but weak associations were observed for lower energy (rs = −0.302, p = 0.044) and fat intake (rs = −0.340, p = 0.024) 3 days before with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and higher caffeine intake 3 days before with overall gastrointestinal symptoms (rs = 0.314, p = 0.038). Total fermentable oligo‐, di‐, monosaccharides and polyols intake and breath hydrogen were not different between those with severe versus non‐severe symptoms (p > 0.05). Although those with severe symptoms had higher caffeine (p = 0.032), and total polyols intake (p = 0.031) 3 days before, and higher % energy from fat (p = 0.043) and sorbitol intake (p = 0.026) during the race, and slower ultramarathon finish times (p = 0.042). Conclusion: Total fermentable oligo‐, di‐, and monosaccharides intake and carbohydrate malabsorption were not associated with gastrointestinal symptoms. Additional research on the effect of fat, caffeine, and polyol intake on exercise‐associated gastrointestinal symptoms is warranted and presents new nutritional areas for consideration when planning nutritional intake for ultramarathoners. Aim: The aim of this study was to validate the Delirium Observation Screening Scale (DOSS) in a population of long‐term care facility (LTCF) residents in Flanders. Currently there is no validated screening tool for delirium available for the population in this setting in Flanders. Methods: A multisite, cross‐sectional study was conducted in six LTCFs. A total of 338 residents aged 65 years and older were included. Sociodemographic and clinical data, including data from the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) and DOSS, were obtained by three trained nurse researchers. For the DOSS, internal consistency was determined, and inter‐rater reliability was calculated. To validate the DOSS, the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value of the DOSS relative to the CAM were determined through receiver operating characteristic analysis. This article adheres to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies (STROBE) checklist for observational research. Results: For 338 residents, delirium assessments were completed during an early or late shift. The prevalence of delirium was 14.2% as measured with the DOSS. The reliability (α) for the CAM and DOSS was assessed, as was the inter‐rater reliability (κ) and the area under the curve. The sensitivity and specificity for a cut‐off value of 3 on the DOSS by Youden's index were very high, as was the negative predictive value. The positive predictive value was good. Purpose: The association between birth order and adverse perinatal outcomes has been well studied in twin pregnancies. However, little is known about the differences in immediate perinatal outcomes as well as long‐term hospitalization of the offspring in triplet pregnancies according to their birth order. As such, we aimed to assess the differences in immediate perinatal outcomes and long‐term hospitalizations among triplets by their birth order. Methods: In a retrospective hospital‐based cohort study, immediate perinatal outcomes and long‐term hospitalizations were compared among triplet siblings according to their birth order. Deliveries occurred between the years 1991 and 2021 in a tertiary medical center. The study groups were followed until 18 years of age for cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and infection‐related hospitalizations. Generalized estimation equation (GEE) models were used to control for confounders. Kaplan–Meier survival curves were used to compare cumulative long‐term hospitalization incidences and Cox proportional hazards models were performed to control for confounders. Results: The study included 117 triplet deliveries. Rates of small for gestational age (SGA) infants increased linearly by birth order (6.0%, 7.7%, and 15.4% for the first, second, and third siblings, respectively; p‐value for trends = 0.035). Using a GEE model controlling for maternal age, being born third in a triplet pregnancy was independently associated with SGA (third vs. first sibling, adjusted OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.38–6.59, p = 0.005). No significant differences in cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and infection‐related hospitalizations were noted among the first, second, and third siblings. Likewise, using Kaplan–Meier survival analyses, no significant differences in the cumulative incidence of long‐term pediatric hospitalizations were noted between the siblings. In Cox proportional hazards models, controlling for weight and gender, birth order in a triplet pregnancy did not exhibit an association with long‐term hospitalizations of the offspring. Background: Cesarean birth (CB) rates have been increasing rapidly globally, including in Bangladesh. This study aimed to assess national trends in CB rates and to investigate associated factors in Bangladesh. Methods: We analyzed data from the five most recent Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys (BDHS) between 2003 and 2018. A total of 27,328 ever‐married women aged 15–49 who had a live birth in the 2 years preceding the survey were included in this study. We estimated the prevalence of CB from 2003 to 2018, as well as changes in the prevalence. Logistic regression analysis was used to measure the association between dependent and independent variables. Results: The overall prevalence of CB among Bangladeshi mothers was 3.99% in 2003–04; this rate increased to 33.22% in 2017–18. The annual percentage change in CB rate was 16.34% from 2004 to 2017–18, which is alarming relative to the World Health Organization's cesarean birth recommended threshold. Several factors, such as maternal age, maternal and paternal education, working status of the mother, maternal BMI, age at first pregnancy, antenatal care (ANC) use, administrative division, and wealth status, had a significant influence on the rising rate of CB in Bangladesh. Conclusions: This study documents the alarming rate of CB increase in Bangladesh since 2003. It is critical that authorities implement more effective national monitoring measures to identify the causes of this dramatic increase and work to mitigate the rate of unnecessary CB in Bangladesh. Background: The high maternal and neonatal mortality rate in sub‐Saharan Africa could be reduced by using navigation by means of mobile devices to increase the number of women who choose to give birth in a health center (HC) with a skilled healthcare practitioner. Methods: A quasi‐experimental design was used to test a midwife‐delivered navigation by means of mobile phone. A total of 208 women were randomized to two groups (intervention and control). Women in the intervention group received up to three navigation calls from midwives. Women in the control group received usual antenatal education during prenatal visits. Data were collected using semistructured questionnaires. Childbirth location was determined through medical records. Results: Overall, 180 (87%) women gave birth in a HC with a 3% advantage for the intervention group. A total of 86% (88/102) of the control group gave birth in a HC versus 89% (92/103) for the intervention group (Χ2 = 0.44, p‐value = 0.51), with an unadjusted odds ratio of 1.33 (95% CI: 0.57, 3.09). Among those with personal phones, 91% (138/152) had a birth in a HC versus 79% (42/53) in those without a personal phone (Χ2 = 4.89, p‐value = 0.03). Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that it is feasible to deliver phone‐based navigation to support birth in a HC; personal phone ownership may be a factor in the success of this strategy. Background: Respectful maternity care (RMC) is a rights‐based approach to childbirth that centers the dignity, autonomy, and well‐being of birthing women. This study aimed to examine factors associated with RMC among women giving birth in Tanzania and to examine whether HIV status was associated with self‐reported RMC. Methods: We enrolled 229 postpartum women in six clinics in the Kilimanjaro Region; of them, 103 were living with HIV. Participants completed a survey within 48 h after birth before being discharged. RMC was measured using a 30‐item scale with three subscales (dignity and respect; supportive care; communication and autonomy), each standardized from 0 to 100. Univariable and multivariable regression models examined factors associated with RMC. Results: The median score of the full RMC score was 74, differing slightly by subscale: 83 for dignity and respect, 76 for supportive care, and 67 for communication and autonomy. RMC did not differ by HIV status (median 67.0 vs. 67.0, p = 0.89). In multivariable linear regression, women who would not recommend the birth facility to their friends and who did not receive breastfeeding education had significantly lower RMC scores on the full RMC scale. In the dignity and respect subscale, variables associated with significantly lower RMC scores were not being able to read and write, delivering in a public facility, and delivering vaginally. Conclusions: Although self‐reported RMC was generally high, we identified areas for improvement. Practitioners need ongoing training on RMC principles and the delivery of equitable care. Background: Medication discontinuation studies explore the outcomes of stopping a medication compared to continuing it. Comprehensively identifying medication discontinuation articles in bibliographic databases remains challenging due to variability in terminology. Objectives: To develop and validate search filters to retrieve medication discontinuation articles in Medline and Embase. Methods: We identified medication discontinuation articles in a convenience sample of systematic reviews. We used primary articles to create two reference sets for Medline and Embase, respectively. The reference sets were equally divided by randomization in development sets and validation sets. Terms relevant for discontinuation were identified by term frequency analysis in development sets and combined to develop two search filters that maximized relative recalls. The filters were validated against validation sets. Relative recalls were calculated with their 95% confidences intervals (95% CI). Results: We included 316 articles for Medline and 407 articles for Embase, from 15 systematic reviews. The Medline optimized search filter combined 7 terms. The Embase optimized search filter combined 8 terms. The relative recalls were respectively 92% (95% CI: 87–96) and 91% (95% CI: 86–94). Introduction: Due to the COVID‐19 pandemic, the Undergraduate Medical Doctor (MD) Programme at McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada) was unable to run in‐person medical school interviews in March 2020, prompting an alternate solution that maximised admission opportunities for Indigenous applicants, prioritised admission for those rated most highly in the interview determination process, and allocated subsequent offers via lottery. Methods: A short survey was administered to applicants who had been offered an admissions interview and were subsequently impacted by the admissions adaptations. The survey elicited perceptions of the adaptation through Likert scale ratings and free‐text responses. Survey data were analysed via a sequential (quantitative to qualitative) mixed‐methods design. Results: 196 of 552 potential participants completed the survey. Across quantitative and qualitative analyses, respondents reported that the adaptation had a negative impact on their professional development and personal life. Ratings of negative perception were greater for those who did not receive an offer than for those who accepted or declined an offer. Free text responses emphasised considerable criticism for the lottery portion of the adaptation and displeasure that efforts made in constructing applications were less relevant than anticipated. Discussion: The negative responses to this unexpected change highlight the profound upstream impact admission policies have on the preapplication behaviours of aspiring medical students. Background: Virtual reality (VR) offers much potential for learning, but it challenges learners' orientation. Objectives: This paper investigates whether it is possible to use light or movement cues to facilitate orientation in a search task in a desktop‐VR environment so that participants can better attend to the learning content presented simultaneously. Methods: In two pre‐registered online experiments, we investigated the effects of cueing (light and movement) on search time, learning, and several evaluation variables. Participants were asked to find tools in a virtual workshop, while information about the respective tool was narrated. Experiment 1 (N = 60) used a within‐subject design, that is, the objects were alternately highlighted by light, movement or not. For Experiment 2 (N = 159) the narration was substantially shortened, and a between‐subject design was used. Cognitive load and presence were measured additionally. Results and conclusions: In Experiment 1, only the movement cue decreased search time, indicating automatic guidance of learners' attention. There was no effect of cueing on learning, which may be due to the average search time being substantially shorter than the narration, leaving sufficient time to attend to the narration exclusively. In Experiment 2 search times were significantly faster for both cueing methods, but only the light cue resulted in better learning outcomes, which could be explained by the slightly lower presence in the movement cue condition. Implications: Results imply that it is important to develop cues that automatically guide attention without reducing presence. Background: Research into enhancing the effectiveness of information delivery in asynchronous video lectures remains sparse. This study analyzes the nonverbal teaching behaviours in asynchronous online videos, drawing comparisons between pre‐service and in‐service teachers (ITs). Objectives: This research primarily aims to juxtapose the nonverbal teaching behaviours, such as arm extensions and body orientation, utilized by pre‐service teachers (PTs) and ITs within asynchronous online videos. Methods: Asynchronous video lectures from four pre‐service and four ITs across four diverse subject topics were scrutinized. Leveraging deep learning technology, teachers' poses during their instruction towards a video camera were quantified, with a particular focus on arm stretch range and body orientation in relation to the subject being taught. Results: The findings revealed that PTs were deficient in effectively employing pointing gestures. Their arm stretches and body orientation towards the board were not differentiated across subjects. Conversely, ITs demonstrated subject‐specific variations in their arm extension and body orientation, signalling their effective strategies for knowledge dissemination. Conclusions and Discussion: This study emphasizes the importance of assessing nonverbal teaching behaviours in the development of effective instructional training. It accentuates the need for nonverbal communication and subject‐specific teaching strategy training in PTs. Future investigations could broaden their scope to include larger sample sizes and expanded subject areas to discern more comprehensive trends in nonverbal teaching behaviours. Background: A practical test that measures the information and communication technology (ICT) skills students need for effectively using ICT in primary education has yet to be developed (Oh et al., 2021). This paper reports on the development, validation, and reliability of a test measuring primary school students' ICT skills required for effectively using ICT (the ECC‐ICT test). Objectives: Based on existing literature, three ICT use domains were identified for effectively using ICT: Effective, collaborative, and creativeuse of ICT. For these three domains, 24 corresponding teaching objectives were identified from a widely used digital literacy framework. Thirty‐four test items cover these teaching objectives in an online test. Methods: A mixed‐method approach was used for the ECC‐ICT test. Four pilot rounds (n=25) implemented qualitative interviews for cognitive validity and refining the test items, followed by a qualitative usability study(n=6). Confirmatory factor analysis and ANOVA provided quantitative insight into the large‐scale test administration(n=575). Results and Conclusions: Composite reliability of our conceptual 3‐factor confirmatory model showed that the test reliably measured primary school effective use of ICT (ω = 0.82), collaborative use of ICT (ω = 0.80) and creative use of ICT (ω = 0.64). Convergent validity (ranging from 0.41 to 0.46) was acceptable. Internal consistency (ranging from 0.84 to 0.91) and discriminant validity (HTMT values below 0.90) are good. ANOVA results show that mean test scores are higher for students in higher grade levels (p < 0.001). The post hoc Bonferroni results show that most grade‐by‐grade comparisons are significant (p < 0.001). Objectives: The objectives were to investigate the association between oral functional status (defined by the number of functional teeth and functional occluding units [FOUs]) on oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL). It also aimed to determine if dentures could compensate for the loss of FOUs in terms of OHRQoL in community‐dwelling older adults in Singapore. Methods: Community‐dwelling older adults, aged 60 years and above, were recruited from a community‐based oral health functional screening programme from 1 May 2018 to 31 December 2019. During the screening, an Oral Health Impact Profile‐14 (OHIP‐14) questionnaire and oral examination were administered. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi‐square test, univariate logistic regression and multivariate predictive modelling. Results: Data from 1037 participants were analysed (52% female; mean age 71.5 (SD 7.15)). The mean OHIP‐14 score was 4.5 ± 7.2. The OHIP‐14 scores were significantly associated with the number of functional teeth and the number of FOUs (p <.001). Having at least 20 functional teeth or 10 FOUs was associated with a significantly lower OHIP‐14 score. Those with no FOUs had higher OHIP‐14 scores compared to those with at least 10 FOUs, even in the presence of a satisfactory denture. Conclusion: Maintaining at least 20 functional teeth or 10 FOUs was associated with better OHRQoL among community‐dwelling older adults in Singapore. Dentures may have limited compensatory ability in terms of replacing natural functional occlusal units and maintaining OHRQoL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pocock and Simon's minimization method is a popular approach for covariate‐adaptive randomization in clinical trials. Valid statistical inference with data collected under the minimization method requires the knowledge of the limiting covariance matrix of within‐stratum imbalances, whose existence is only recently established. In this work, we propose a bootstrap‐based estimator for this limit and establish its consistency, in particular, by Le Cam's third lemma. As an application, we consider in simulation studies adjustments to existing robust tests for treatment effects with survival data by the proposed estimator. It shows that the adjusted tests achieve a size close to the nominal level, and unlike other designs, the robust tests without adjustment may have an asymptotic size inflation issue under the minimization method. Abnormalities in emotion recognition (ER) are frequently reported in depression, with lower recognition accuracy in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) when compared to healthy individuals. Mindfulness was found to directly impact the severity of depressive symptoms, by recognizing negative cognitions and dysfunctional reactions. The aims of this study were to compare ER and mindfulness levels between MDD patients and healthy controls (HCs), as well as to examine whether ER and mindfulness are related to symptom severity in MDD patients. Sixty‐eight patients with MDD and 93 HCs participated in the study. A sociodemographic form, reading the mind in the eyes test (RMET), five facet mindfulness questionnaire‐short form (FFMQ‐S) and the Montgomery–Asberg depression scale (MADRS) were administered. Group comparison in ER and mindfulness was performed using the multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA). Bivariate correlations and hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed to assess the associations between depression severity, ER and mindfulness in the patient group. Higher level of mindfulness was found in HCs relative to MDD group, however, no ER difference was present between the groups. A positive association between depression severity and the non‐reactivity facet of mindfulness was found. On the other hand, ER was not significantly associated with symptom severity among individuals with MDD. Non‐reactivity, unlike other dimensions of mindfulness, seems to increase with the severity of depressive symptoms among MDD patients. A particular focus on this subdimension in mindfulness techniques may yield better outcomes in alleviation of depressive symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This meta‐analysis aimed to examine the relationship between automatic processes and behavior as well as their moderators. Methods: There were 126 effect sizes (Fisher's Z) extracted from 55 independent research studies involving 10,432 participants. Meta‐analyses were conducted using Comprehensive Meta‐Analysis Version 3.3. Univariate meta‐regression models were used to analyze underlying moderators. Results: Meta‐analysis after correction found that automatic processes could significantly and positively predict behavior, but the effect size was small (Fisher's Z = 0.057, p < 0.001, 95% CI [0.043, 0.070]). Conclusions: Different components of automatic processes, task reliability, and study design moderated the relationship between automatic processes and behavior. Future research could explore automatic measures at a neurophysiological level or use population‐matched stimuli for specific populations to improve measure validity. Objective: While thrombosis and pregnancy loss are the best‐known clinical features of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), many patients also exhibit "extra‐criteria" manifestations, such as thrombocytopenia. The mechanisms that drive APS thrombocytopenia are not completely understood, and no clinical biomarkers are available for predicting antiphospholipid antibody (aPL)–mediated thrombocytopenia. Calprotectin is a heterodimer of S100A8 and S100A9 that is abundant in the neutrophil cytoplasm and released upon proinflammatory neutrophil activation. Here, we sought to evaluate the presence, clinical associations, and potential mechanistic roles of circulating calprotectin in a cohort of primary APS and aPL‐positive patients. Methods: Levels of circulating calprotectin were determined in plasma by the QUANTA Flash chemiluminescent assay. A viability dye‐based platelet assay was used to assess the potential impact of calprotectin on aPL‐mediated thrombocytopenia. Results: Circulating calprotectin was measured in 112 patients with primary APS and 30 aPL‐positive (without APS criteria manifestations or lupus) patients as compared to patients with lupus (without APS), patients with unprovoked venous thrombosis (without aPL), and healthy controls. Levels of calprotectin were higher in patients with primary APS and aPL‐positive patients compared to healthy controls. After adjustment for age and sex, calprotectin level correlated positively with absolute neutrophil count (r = 0.41, P < 0.001), positively with C‐reactive protein level (r = 0.34, P = 0.002), and negatively with platelet count (r = −0.24, P = 0.004). Mechanistically, we found that calprotectin provoked aPL‐mediated thrombocytopenia by engaging platelet surface toll‐like receptor 4 and activating the NLRP3‐inflammasome, thereby reducing platelet viability in a caspase‐1‐dependent manner. Objective: There is a need to characterize exposures associated with the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In this pilot study, we explore a hypothesis‐free approach that can measure thousands of exogenous chemicals in blood ("exposome") in patients with SLE and unaffected controls. Methods: This cross‐sectional study analyzed a cohort of patients with prevalent SLE (n = 285) and controls (n = 106). Plasma was analyzed by liquid chromatography–quadrupole time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (LC‐QTOF/MS). Mass spectrometry features present in at least 25% of all samples were selected for association analysis (n = 2,737). Features were matched to potential chemicals using available databases. Association analysis of abundances of features with SLE status was performed, adjusting for age and sex. We also explored features associated with SLE phenotypes, sociodemographic factors, and current medication use. Results: We found 30 features significantly associated with SLE status (Bonferroni P < 0.05). Of these, seven matched chemical names based on databases. These seven features included phthalate metabolites, a formetanate metabolite, and eugenol. The abundance of acid pesticides differed between patients with SLE and controls (Bonferroni P < 0.05). Two unmatched features were associated with a history of lupus nephritis, and one with anti–double‐stranded DNA antibody production (Bonferroni P < 0.05). Seventeen features varied by self‐reported race and ethnicity, including a polyfluoroalkyl substance (analysis of variance P < 1.69 × 10−5). Eleven features correlated with antimalarials, 6 with mycophenolate mofetil, and 29 with prednisone use. Conclusion: This proof‐of‐concept study demonstrates that LC‐QTOF/MS is a powerful tool that agnostically detects circulating exogenous compounds. Aims: The Diabetes Eating Problems Survey – Revised (DEPS‐R) is commonly used to assess disordered eating behaviour (DEB) in individuals with type 1 diabetes and has advantages compared to other measures not specifically tailored to diabetes. A score ≥20 on the DEPS‐R is used to indicate clinically significant DEB; however, it does not distinguish between eating disorder (ED) phenotypes necessary to guide treatment decisions, limiting clinical utility. Methods: The current study used latent class analysis to identify distinct person‐centred profiles of DEB in adults with type 1 diabetes using the DEPS‐R. Analysis of Variance with Games Howell post‐hoc comparisons was then conducted to examine the correspondence between the profiles and binge eating, insulin restriction and glycaemic control (HbA1c, mean blood glucose, and percent time spent in hyperglycaemia) during 3 days of assessment in a real‐life setting. Results: Latent class analysis indicated a 4‐class solution, with patterns of item endorsement suggesting the following profiles: Bulimia, Binge Eating, Overeating and Low Pathology. Differences in binge eating, insulin restriction and glycaemic control were observed between profiles during 3 days of at‐home assessment. The Bulimia profile was associated with highest HbA1c and 3‐day mean blood glucose. Conclusions: There are common patterns of responses on the DEPS‐R that appear to reflect different ED phenotypes. Profiles based on the DEPS‐R corresponded with behaviour in the real‐life setting as expected and were associated with different glycaemic outcomes. Summary: Autonomy is becoming a prime requirement for satellite mission control operations. Data‐driven methods like Machine Learning models are playing a key role in bringing in autonomy. Health keeping data from satellite telemetry is a key ingredient in these data‐driven methods. In real‐world satellite operations, the health‐keeping telemetry data gradually drifts due to adverse space weather effects and wear and tear of electronic and mechanical components. The key question that arises is how to detect and quantify the data drift which is generally a gradual phenomenon. This paper discusses a novel statistical method for detecting data drift occurring in satellite telemetry. For the purpose of experimental work in this paper, an actual telemetry data set of the BUS CURRENT sensor which is part of the Electrical Power System of a Low Earth Orbit Satellite was considered. Data drift detection test was carried out using this sensor data using the developed novel statistical method and with Kolmogorov Smirnov test which is a probabilistic method. Both results are analysed and compared. Thereafter novel statical method was used to check its efficacy using a synthetic data set with induced drift. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our study investigated the impact on male mouse fertility and reproduction of long‐term (14 weeks) exposure to triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), a co‐monomer of resin‐based compounds, at doses of 0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 ppm. Test and control mice were then paired with sexually mature untreated female mice and their fertility evaluated. Females paired with males exposed to all TEGDMA doses exhibited a significant decline in pregnancy rates, and significant increases in the total embryonic resorption‐to‐implantation ratio, except for males exposed to 0.01 ppm TEGDMA. Males in the highest dose group (10 ppm) showed significant increases in seminal vesicle and preputial gland weights. They also had significantly higher serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) than the controls, and the 0.01 ppm dosage group for FSH levels. TEGDMA exposure resulted in notable histopathological alterations in the testis, with detachment of germ cells and shedding of germinal epithelium into the tubule lumen. These results strongly indicate that TEGDMA exposure has detrimental consequences on the reproductive abilities and functions in male mice through disruption of the standard hormonal regulation of the reproductive system, leading to changes in spermatogenesis and ultimately leading to decreased fertility.
