Research articles in English have witnessed a growing emphasis on self-promotion, posing challenges for Spanish social scientists when writing for English-medium journals. One difficulty lies in effectively promoting their own research without compromising necessary content and exceeding word limits. To address this issue, this study explores strategies for making room for research promotion in the discussion/closing sections of social science research articles. A comparative analysis of these sections in English and Spanish was conducted, focusing on the communicative functions fulfilled by different segment types. The findings confirm that authors in English prioritise promoting the quality and applicability of their research over its contribution and relevance. They also reveal that these authors tend to include fewer non-promotional segments restating results, providing background information, and elaborating ideas compared to their Spanish counterparts. However, both groups of authors consistently include segments commenting on the results, as well as making recommendations for future research/practice. These segments are considered essential in this part-genre. This study provides insights for Spanish social scientists balancing self-promotion and other communicative goals in English research writing. Artificial intelligence (AI) has entered libraries in various ways and raised concern about its potential ethical consequences therein. A number of approaches have been developed to encourage ethical AI and audit the ethics of specific AI applications, but very few approaches have been applied or tested, especially in a library setting, and so it remains unclear which, if any approaches are suitable or useful for encouraging ethical AI in libraries. We applied Ethical Foresight Analysis as an approach to identify possible ethical risks of an AI project for (semi-)automated subject indexing in a large research library. Specifically, to identify risks we conducted a two-round ethical Delphi study wherein experts on AI development, library practices, and AI ethics sought consensus on potential risks and their relative importance. The experts' post-test reflections on the procedure were then collected to inform an evaluation of the approach's feasibility. A variety of ethical risks of the specific project and of general AI indexing were indeed identified, most notably discrimination and under-representation stemming from attributes of the bibliographic training data provided by the library (e.g. varied historical contexts and gaps left by unindexed items). However, we identified some drawbacks of the approach tested: (1) it is time-consuming, which is likely prohibitive for many libraries, and (2) the identified risks were mainly well-known issues of AI and its training data rather than the subtle, application-specific, and human-centred issues that ethical foresight analysis might be employed to identify. Thus, although libraries should continue to model ethical AI through careful planning and auditing, alternative development and auditing approaches may be more practical to undertake and more effective at identifying novel or application-specific issues. This study investigates the ability of voice assistants and generative AI tools to respond to reference questions traditionally received by academic librarians. The authors created a sample of 25 questions based on queries received on the virtual reference service at their institution. They then created a rubric to evaluate the quality of the answers that the AI powered tools provided. The authors determined that the tools understand reference questions well and provide relevant answers but that the quality of the references provided, and the accuracy of the answers can be lacking. Librarian co-authorship of knowledge synthesis (KS) research is on the rise, demonstrating growing recognition of the value librarians bring to research teams. This study analyzes trends in KS research output at a mid-sized doctoral granting university between 2017 and 2022, with a focus on librarian involvement. Using PubMed, Scopus, and the Social Sciences Citation Index & Arts and Humanities Citation Index, all KS research published by researchers at our institution between 2017 and 2022 was retrieved. A content analysis was conducted, and findings reveal a 280 % increase in librarian co-authorship during this period, coinciding with a 54 % overall growth in KS publications. Health sciences continue to dominate as the primary creators of KS research, with <10 % of published KS published in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Notably, systematic reviews with librarian co-authors were published in journals with higher Journal Impact Factors (JIFs) than those without. This research underscores the vital role librarians play in advancing KS research, the importance of advocating for librarian co-authorship, and highlights the need for increased librarian engagement in non-health disciplines. The Notre-Dame de Paris fire offers anthropologists in the field of critical heritage studies a rich opportunity for fieldwork and conceptual innovation. This paper examines the social repercussions of a monument's destruction, ranging from emotional responses and public involvement to local and global consequences. The paper also includes the project lines of a broader comparative survey on reactions to the destruction of cultural heritage. A team of social scientists created a comparative grid in order to describe and analyze a series of case studies: Notre-Dame de Paris (France, fire in 2019), the National Museum (Brazil, fire in 2018), Notre-Dame de la Merci (France, fire in 2017), and Coventry Cathedral (UK, bombed in 1940 during WWII). The comparative grid is as follows: - Practices and Reactions: Emotion and Mobilization Regimes Heritage disasters provoke a wide range of privately and collectively expressed reactions that frame these events as a social construction. Article reviews play a pivotal role in fostering students' critical evaluation and critical thinking skills. News & Views (N&V) articles published in Natur e journals are one prominent example of article reviews and serve as excellent models for students to learn and refine their skills in writing article reviews. However, there is limited research on the rhetorical features of N&V articles, especially in terms of textual organization across different disciplines. To address this gap, three corpora were compiled for the present study, representing the disciplinary groups of natural sciences (NS), social sciences (SS), and technology and engineering (TE). Each corpus was comprised of 30 N&V texts from its respective disciplinary group. Using a self-developed coding framework building on previous research, we coded the move and step of each text in the corpora. The coding data were compared and analyzed to uncover the distinguishing textual features of the three disciplinary groups. The analysis revealed that the variations were predominantly at the step level. N&V articles of NS and SS shared most of the moves and steps, but N&Vs in TE exhibited unique stylistic characteristics. Visuals (e.g., figures) are prevalent in academic writing across disciplines, and they are usually accompanied by commentaries that summarize and/or interpret the information they contain. Commentaries on visuals have not yet been studied in terms of their rhetorical and phraseological features, and insights into these features could help novice academic writers integrate such commentaries more effectively. To address the gap, this study examined and reported on frequently employed rhetorical functions and phrase-frames for commentaries on visuals, based on a corpus of such commentaries extracted from 100 social science research reports. Specifically, the corpus was first manually annotated using a rhetorical function framework developed based on previous studies. Five- to seven-gram phrase-frames were also automatically extracted based on corpus statistics and then manually scrutinized to generate a pedagogically useful list. The finalized 169 phrase-frames were then linked to the rhetorical functions based on their occurrences and sorted accordingly in the final list. Under each rhetorical function, the phrase-frames were further categorized into specialized, semi-specialized, and non-specialized types, following previous studies. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) provide rich academic content to learners around the world. However, understanding such content is challenging to second-language learners. Given the importance of vocabulary knowledge to comprehension, this study constructed a 10.2-million-word corpus of MOOCs from four disciplinary areas (engineering, humanities and arts, science and math, and social sciences), and examined (a) the lexical demands of MOOCs, (b) the coverage of general and discipline-specific academic vocabulary lists in MOOCs, and (c) the extent to which these lists helped learners with MOOCs' lexical demands. The results show that – together with proper nouns, marginal words, transparent compounds, and acronyms – the most frequent 3,000 and 4,000 word families of general English respectively provide 90% and 95% coverage of the corpus, indicating that MOOCs are as lexically challenging as university lectures. Also, because both general and discipline-specific academic vocabulary lists provide high coverage of MOOCs, studying them can lower students' learning burdens and help them achieve higher coverage of MOOCs than learning words by frequency. Lastly, based on learners' existing vocabulary knowledge and target disciplines, this study provides pedagogical recommendations to teachers on how to employ general and discipline-specific academic word lists as vocabulary support for EAP students. • This study constructs a 10-million-word corpus of MOOCs from four disciplinary areas. • MOOCs are found to be lexically as challenging as university lectures and seminars. • General and discipline-specific academic word lists have high coverage over MOOCs. This paper presents the findings of a seven-year longitudinal survey conducted from 2016 to 2022, examining e-book acceptance among first-year undergraduate students in the information management program. Targeting students who were new to their educational journey and had minimal exposure to academic contexts, the study used convenience sampling to gather data from 301 participants. Employing the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), we assessed four dimensions of e-book acceptance: Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Attitude Towards Using, and Behavioral Intention to Use E -books. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) validated these dimensions, indicating a robust model applicable to a broader undergraduate student population. The results highlighted strong interrelations among these factors, with significant implications for academic librarians. Notably, from their initial exposure, students associated e-books primarily with a source of new information, rather than as a time-saving tool. Although e-books were perceived as easy to use, this aspect did not strongly influence students' attitudes and intentions to use them as much as their perceived usefulness did. The study reveals that students, particularly in social sciences, have long viewed e-books as a vital technology for exploratory knowledge acquisition. While they perceive e-books as easy to use, this perception likely stems from their habitual use for managing learning activities, rather than from recognizing any added value of the technology itself. L'objectif du présent article est d'aboutir à une conceptualisation du terme d'agent qui apparaît à plusieurs reprises dans l'enseignement de Lacan. L'enjeu est de produire une théorisation cohérente dudit terme afin de pouvoir le situer dans la praxis psychanalytique et d'étudier l'influence du culturalisme nord-américain sur cette praxis. Notre examen consiste à retracer l'évolution de cette notion d'agent à travers l'enseignement de Lacan. Ce trajet commence officiellement en 1956 mais s'estompe à partir de 1959 afin de faire son retour en 1969 de manière radicalement différente. Il s'agit alors de préciser ce que Lacan entend par « agent » à chacune de ces périodes, et de montrer comment, à chaque fois, il s'appuie sur cette notion non pas pour la conceptualiser en tant que telle, mais pour la faire dialoguer avec les autres concepts psychanalytiques. En retraçant l'évolution du terme, nous arrivons à une conceptualisation de l'agent comme étant équivalent au statut du signifiant comme tel. Il est important donc de distinguer le statut de l'agent de celui du sujet et du moi qui, eux, ne font pas preuve d'une véritable activité. Le signifiant, en revanche, est celui qui permet à l'action d'avoir lieu. Cette équivalence est ainsi implicite mais constante tout au long de l'enseignement lacanien, d'abord en tant que fonction dans l'équation œdipienne et ensuite en tant que place dans la théorie des discours. Nous faisons l'hypothèse que les notions d'agent et d'agentivité sont malmenées dans les écrits psychanalytiques actuels. Cela est dû à une influence culturaliste d'un côté, mais surtout à une interdisciplinarité hâtive, c'est-à-dire qui cherche à nouer la psychanalyse avec d'autres disciplines sans prendre le temps de redéfinir les concepts. L'agentivité est l'exemple parfait : elle est définie du côté des sciences cognitives et sociales puis reprise comme telle par certains psychanalystes sans qu'ils la redéfinissent, ce qui mène à une confusion théorique entre le sujet et l'agent. Une véritable conceptualisation de l'agent à l'intérieur du champ psychanalytique permet d'éviter les confusions théoriques dues à une interdisciplinarité qui ne prend pas le temps de redéfinir les concepts. Il est alors important de faire dialoguer la psychanalyse avec les autres disciplines sans pour autant faire perdre à celle-ci sa particularité. The aim of this paper is to conceptualize the term "agent" which appears multiple times throughout Lacan's teaching. The challenge is to produce a coherent theorization of the term in order to properly situate it in the psychoanalytic praxis and to study the influence of North American culturalism on this praxis. We will examine the evolution of the notion of agent throughout Lacan's teaching. This trajectory begins officially in 1956, then disappears in 1959, only to re-emerge in 1969 in a radically different fashion. It is then a question of specifying what Lacan means by "agent" at each of these periods, and to show how each time he relies on this notion not to conceptualize it as such, but rather to build a dialogue with other psychoanalytic concepts. By following the evolution of the term, we arrive at a conceptualization of the agent as being equivalent to the status of the signifier as such. It is therefore important to distinguish the status of the agent from that of the subject and of the ego, which both seem to not manifest any real activity. The signifier, on the other hand, is that which allows the action to take place. This equivalence is thus implicit yet constant throughout the Lacanian teaching, first as a function in the Oedipal equation and then as an occupation in the theory of discourse. Our hypothesis is that the notions of agent and agency are misused in today's psychoanalytic writings. This is due to an American culturalist influence on one hand, but mostly to a hasty interdisciplinarity, which attempts to link psychoanalysis with other disciplines without taking the necessary time to redefine the concepts at hand. Agency is the perfect example: it is defined by cognitive and social sciences and then reused as such by some analysts without redefining it, which leads to a theoretic confusion between the subject and the agent. A thorough conceptualization of the agent within the field of psychoanalysis allows us to avoid theoretic confusions due to an interdisciplinarity that doesn't take the time to redefine concepts. La psychiatrie comme discipline est portée vers l'autre et l'altérité ; non pas simplement celle pour le patient et sa problématique psychique mais aussi pour des savoirs extérieurs. Reconnaissant ses propres limites et son incapacité à penser seule, la psychiatrie, dont le savoir qui lui est spécifique est sans doute assez limité, se tourne depuis l'origine vers d'autres disciplines. Cet article ne cherche pas à proposer un nouveau modèle susceptible d'articuler cette hétérogénéité conceptuelle, mais essaie de comprendre comment s'effectue ce mouvement d'ouverture vers d'autres disciplines. La psychiatrie y trouve indéniablement une richesse mais son inféodation à des courants qui lui sont extérieurs ne risque-t-il d'accentuer sa dissolution et de faire disparaître son identité ? En s'appuyant sur la distinction proposée par G. Lantéri-Laura entre disciplines intrinsèques (soit des disciplines cliniques comme la neurologie, psychanalyse) et disciplines extrinsèques, qui utilisent une élaboration théorique qui ne doit rien à la clinique (comme l'anthropologie, l'histoire ou la linguistique), cet article s'attachera à partir de nombreux cas particuliers à montrer l'apport des disciplines extrinsèques tout au long de l'histoire de la psychiatrie. Cet article cherche à décrire plusieurs modalités d'articulation de la psychiatrie aux savoirs extrinsèques, en s'intéressant plus précisément aux sciences humaines et sociales et à l'histoire. Dans un premier temps, on étudie le mouvement par lequel la psychiatrie va chercher dans des sciences affines un appui pour sa pratique, une éthique des soins, voire un « troisième œil » critique qui puisse lui offrir ce recul sur une pratique souvent décriée. Dans un second temps, cette étude se propose d'examiner combien la psychiatrie, le savoir qu'elle isole concernant la question de la folie, ouvre par lui-même à une interrogation sur l'homme qui peut être pris en compte par les autres disciplines. La sociologie démontre notamment comment les catégories cliniques peuvent être liées aux préjugés et aux idéaux d'une culture et d'une époque. L'histoire montre comment un événement comme celui de la libération des chaînes par Pinel peut bénéficier d'interprétations historiques, dont les significations ne sont jamais épuisées. La psychiatrie s'inspire des autres savoirs mais ces emprunts s'effectuent souvent à partir de déplacements qui traduisent la nécessité d'une adaptation aux enjeux cliniques. Ces savoirs extrinsèques ne sont jamais importés sans transformation et sans une part d'infidélité. Réinterroger ce qui est le plus évident, remettre en question ce qui paraît le plus coutumier, tels sont les bénéficies que la psychiatrie peut obtenir en choisissant de se décentrer et de faire appel aux disciplines extrinsèques à la clinique. La prise en compte des sciences humaines et sociales dans la compréhension des troubles psychiques est aujourd'hui bien établie. Le dialogue qui résulte de la rencontre de disciplines hétérogènes n'a pas pour but d'aboutir à un consensus. L'exercice clinique de la psychiatrie conserve des spécificités fortes liées à l'exercice de la rencontre avec le désordre mental. Le savoir qui en résulte est irréductible aux autres disciplines. L'acte psychiatrique repose sur une responsabilité incombant aux seuls cliniciens, irrémédiablement divisés par les enjeux auxquels ils doivent faire face. Psychiatry as a discipline is oriented towards the other and towards otherness; not only that of the patient and of their psychological issues, but also for the alterity of external knowledge. Recognizing its own limitations and its inability to think alone, psychiatry, whose specific knowledge is undoubtedly quite limited, has since the beginning turned to other disciplines. This article does not try to propose a new model likely to articulate this conceptual heterogeneity, but tries to understand how this movement of opening towards other disciplines is carried out. Psychiatry undeniably finds a richness in this, but does not its subservience to currents that are external to it risk accentuating its dissolution and making its identity disappear? Based on the distinction proposed by G. Lantéri-Laura between intrinsic disciplines (i.e. clinical disciplines such as neurology, psychoanalysis) and extrinsic disciplines, which use a theoretical elaboration that owes nothing to clinical engagement with subjects (such as anthropology, history, or linguistics), this article will endeavor to show the contribution of extrinsic disciplines throughout the history of psychiatry, using a number of specific cases. This article describes several ways in which psychiatry is linked to extrinsic knowledge, focusing more specifically on the human and social sciences and on history. Firstly, we study the movement by which psychiatry seeks support for its practice, an ethic of care, and even a critical 'third eye' that can offer it this perspective on a practice that is often decried. Secondly, this study proposes to examine the extent to which psychiatry, through the knowledge that it isolates concerning the question of madness, opens up by itself to a questioning of humanity that can be taken into account by other disciplines. Sociology shows, in particular, how clinical categories can be linked to the prejudices and ideals of a culture and an era. History shows how an event such as Pinel's liberation from chains can benefit from historical interpretations, the meanings of which are never exhausted. Psychiatry is inspired by other knowledges, but this borrowing is often based on displacements that reflect the need to adapt to clinical issues. This extrinsic knowledge is never imported without transformation and without some infidelity. Re-examining what is most obvious, questioning what seems most customary, these are the benefits that psychiatry can obtain by choosing to decentralize and to call upon disciplines extrinsic to the clinical. The inclusion of the human and social sciences in the understanding of psychological disorders is now well established. The dialogue that results from the meeting of heterogeneous disciplines is not intended to lead to a consensus. The clinical practice of psychiatry retains strong specificities linked to the exercise of the encounter with mental disorder. The resulting knowledge is irreducible to other disciplines. Long-term monitoring of wildlife populations has greatly contributed to our current understanding of population dynamics and ecosystem functioning. Despite tireless field campaigns, however, only a fraction of the biodiversity has been monitored to date and the dynamics of potential key species have yet to be understood. Here, we propose a method based on testimonials of observations from field workers to reconstruct past abundances of unmonitored populations and fill data gaps. We contacted scientists who conducted field work at the Bylot Island field station, Nunavut, in the Canadian Arctic between 1991 and 2019 and collected 205 testimonials of past observations from 131 participants. We scored each testimonial based on its content and derived annual abundance indices for three highly fluctuating taxa, being lemmings, snowy owls and ermines. These indices were compared to standardized abundance estimates based on field sampling that were either available between 1993 and 2019 (lemmings and snowy owls) or 2007–2019 (ermines). Our results show that abundance indices based on testimonials correlate well with those from systematic sampling and can be used to detect ecological phenomena. Moreover, we show that abundance indices were not affected by the effort of participants in the field or the delay between the observations and the collection of testimonials. Finally, we use the received testimonials to generate the longest ermine time series of relative abundance in the Canadian Arctic, spanning 29 years. Monitoring programs and research stations often have access to a pool of past participants (e.g. field workers, ecotourists) whose observations can be localized in time. As we strive to gain a deeper understanding of ecosystem functioning, tapping the memories of these people can provide valuable information on the past abundances of unmonitored populations and help answer hypotheses that would otherwise require years of systematic monitoring. This empirical study explores some of the effects of coloniality on social sciences research writing and publishing in the Arab World. The study investigates some aspects of the English for Research Publishing Purposes (ERPP) practices of Arabic-speaking academics who have English as an additional language (EAL) and Native English-speaking (NES) academics who write and publish about issues pertaining to the Arab World, from the Arab World. Employing qualitative interviews, this study examines the accounts of 11 EAL and 11 NES scholars in social sciences (SS) and science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) disciplines about their ERPP practices. The study answers critical questions about the ERPP challenges EAL and NES academics face when writing about their local issues. The study's findings suggest that SS academics face significant challenges with epistemological dependency, discouraging border thinking, and managing the demands of disciplinary writing conventions. The study's accounts, from the Arab World, suggest how embracing border thinkers, who employ local and/or Western epistemic frameworks develops academic research and knowledge construction. The study's findings contribute essential considerations about the necessity of critically approaching the buzzing conversation on decolonization in ESP and ERPP scholarship by recognizing the experiences of EAL and NES scholars with decoloniality. • EAL and NES scholars face challenges with border thinking. • There are more salient challenges with coloniality and SS research. • The decoloniality 'hype' overlooks the ERPP experiences of EAL and NES scholars. • There is a need to critically understand decoloniality efforts in ESP scholarship. This paper analyzes the availability, via both library lending licenses and open access, of digital versions of the monographs that professors recommend in online bachelor's degrees courses in social sciences at Spanish public universities. Monographs are the type of document most recommended by professors when it comes to teaching and learning in higher education. Digital format is most suitable for online degrees, considering the added effort entailed for libraries to get these documents owing to the geographic dispersion of the students. For this purpose, all the resources in the recommended reading section of the syllabi from a sample of online degree programs in social sciences for the 2022–2023 academic year were extracted. Then, the catalogs of the corresponding university libraries were consulted to check the availability of the monographs on the reading lists. In addition, the catalogs of the usual suppliers to Spanish university libraries were consulted to check the availability of lending licenses for libraries. Finally, types of digital lending platforms are analyzed. Monographs account for 85.6 % of the documents referenced in courses' recommended reading lists. Only 21.0 % of monographs are available in digital format, either through library lending (17.4 %) or open access (4.9 %). On the contrary, practically the entirety of reading lists is available for lending through university libraries in printed format. University libraries could make the effort to acquire even more digital lending licenses for a portion of the books recommended by professors, but in this way they could only obtain 40.9 % of the monographs in digital format. Therefore, the publishing industry is not currently meeting the needs of online university education in the social sciences, owing to a large part of its catalog – especially older works – not being offered in digital format as well as the lack of library lending licenses. This paper aims to discuss the features and development trends of China Academic Social Sciences and Humanities Library's (CASHL) internet-based document delivery service, examine the journal usage patterns of CASHL member libraries and determine the time range trends of documents requested by users. Ten years of the CASHL's document delivery service transaction data (about 860,000 items) were extracted, cleaned, integrated, and analysed. Journal use pattern is more decentralised and individualised. Request rates for older papers are continuing to increase. The study examined the role of social influence process of subjective norm, image and voluntariness on perceived usefulness of social media (PUSM) in private university libraries. The quest to ascertain the impact of the social factor in a profit-motivated environment prompted the study. The descriptive research design alongside multistage sampling procedures was applied and the questionnaire method was used for data collection. One hundred and ninety (190) librarians, selected from 13 private university libraries provided the data, out of which 184 copies of the instrument were correctly filled and returned, representing 96.8 per cent return rate. Statistical tools like simple percentage, mean and standard deviation of the Special Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) were employed to analyse the research questions. Results shown that image was the strongest determinant among the proposed social factors of PUSM, followed by subjective norm. While voluntariness was a weak predictor of PUSM, the overall PUSM of librarians in the private university domain in the studied region was very high. This implies that the social factor is significant predictor of technology adoption in the private university library environment. Accordingly, the study concluded that if the performance potentials of social media are consciously communicated and imbibed by librarians through adequate training, whether or not private universities operate in a mandatory environment, PUSM of librarians will remain positively high. Abstract This paper evaluates the literature guarantee for Folklore graduate students based on their dissertations at Beijing Normal University (BNU) Library. First, it investigates related works concerning literature guarantees. Researchers collected 72 master's and 47 doctoral students' dissertations between 2011 and 2014. By building a literature guarantee hierarchy for monographs and periodicals, this study maps citations to the library collection to quantify the collection status. Findings demonstrate that nearly 81% of monograph citations, which is slightly less than periodical citations (nearly 90%), are owned by the library. In frequently cited literature, the percentage rises to 90% for both monographs and periodicals. Moreover, the literature guarantee percentage of electronic monographs (74.8%) and periodicals (87.6%) are both higher than paper editions. This study investigates the discursive construction of identity in the largely neglected register of evaluative journal articles (e.g., critiques, rebuttals). The study looks at how disciplinary identity is constructed in this register through the use of the subjective first-person pronoun I from a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) perspective. This is done through the analysis of: (1) the variation of I in evaluative journal articles across six disciplines (i.e., Applied Linguistics, Biology, History, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science) and (2) the process types (e.g., material, mental) that authors use with I to construct a particular disciplinary identity. Findings show that social science and humanities authors use I much more frequently than hard science authors, but also that the frequency of I in the hard sciences is not negligible when compared to previous research. Another important finding is that disciplinary differences are reflected in both the frequency and use of process types. Social science research on polio has been centred in the global south, where countries that remain endemic or vulnerable to outbreaks are located. However, closely-related strains of poliovirus were detected in the sewage systems of several New York State counties and London boroughs in 2022. These detections constituted the first encounters with polio in the United States and United Kingdom for a generation – for both public health agencies and publics alike. This paper takes the transnational spread of poliovirus in 2022 as an opportunity to critique how public health memories of twentieth-century polio epidemics were mobilised to encourage vaccine uptake among groups considered vulnerable to transmission, notably Orthodox Jewish families. The study integrates data collected in London and New York as part of academic engagement with health protection responses to the spread of polio. Methods in both settings involved ethnographic research, and a total of 59 in-depth semi-structured interviews with public health professionals, healthcare providers, and Orthodox Jewish community partners and residents. Analysis of results demonstrate that narratives of epidemiological progress were deployed in public health responses in London and New York, often through references to sugar cubes, iron lungs, and timelines that narrate the impact of routine childhood immunisations. While memories of polio were deployed in both settings to provoke an urgency to vaccinate, vulnerable publics instead considered the more recent legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic when deciding whether to trust recommendations and responses. Critical attention to memory places analysis on the divergences between institutional (public health agencies) and peopled (publics) responses to disease events. Due to the urgent need for global climate change mitigation, the use of renewable carbon sources and the application of circular economy principles represent promising ways to implement the necessary fundamental transformation toward a sustainable (i.e., carbon-neutral) carbon-based chemical industry. As this required transformation involves a multitude of stakeholders and requires broad societal support, social sciences have to be involved to inform possible transformation pathways. Although there is a growing body of social sciences research in the field of a circular plastics economy, some processes in the social sciences that have the potential to support the transformation process are still understudied. Based on a reflection of the current circular economy approach, we point out research needs in the following fields: (1) behavioral plasticity of consumer behaviors and potential side effects of mitigation strategies, (2) the dynamics of political framework conditions, and (3) the citizens' literacy as relevant supporters of the transformation. Adolescent girls and young women ages 15–24 experience high rates of gender-based violence (GBV), underpinned by gender and social norms that shape their transitions to adulthood. For interventions that seek to leverage and build on existing infrastructure for health service provision, it is important to understand how gender norms operate in the background and how they shape service engagement or non-engagement. In formative work for our project, Screen & Support, outside of Lusaka, Zambia, we engaged in community conversations with adolescent girls and young women to understand common types and experiences of violence, perceptions of what causes violence, and pathways to post-violence service access. This manuscript explores emerging findings surrounding social and gender norms. We engaged n = 12 adolescent girls and young women ages 15–24, including survivors of GBV, young women living with HIV, and young married women in separate conversations conducted in a mix of Nyanja, Bemba, and English. Arts-based activities accompanied guided focus group discussions. Translated transcripts were coded and thematically analysed by two authors using Dedoose software. Key themes emerged around two major themes—understanding the norms underpinning violence, and observing how these norms were activated in the aftermath of violence. Sub-themes focused on power differentials supporting violence, social expectations and community-enacted sanctions, and understanding dominant norms and assumptions. Considering what unfolded in the aftermath of violence, young women participants considered key reference groups upholding norms, explored the contexts where norms may be contested or become more complicated, and described how accepting silence was a common means of closure. We discuss the implications of these findings for programme design, delivery, and evaluation, as well as the potential, and roadmap, for shifting norms that negative affect adolescent girls and young women. • Adolescent girls and young women noted dominant gender norms perpetuating violence. • There were critical reflections on spaces for dissonance, resistance, and change. • Future work should engage diverse stakeholders to shift to healthier norms. The internationalization of higher education has been driven by an increasingly globalized and interconnected world. One concept that embodies this internationalization process is global citizenship, which can be promoted through student mobility, internationalization-at-home, or other forms of intercultural learning. While global citizenship remains a broad and highly contested term, the increased interest of its role in higher education has inspired research in different fields. The aim of this paper is to provide a review of existing research approaches to studying global citizenship, and to formulate future research directions that may integrate these approaches into a holistic framework. By reviewing literature from different fields in the social sciences, we have identified three main research approaches: intercultural competence, social identification with a global community, and civic engagement. While each approach reflects an important dimension of global citizenship, they remain separate in the literature, complicating the understanding and application of global citizenship in higher education. Therefore, for each approach we present a general conceptualization and a brief overview of prior findings. We discuss how integrating these approaches can lead to a more holistic understanding of global citizenship and guide future avenues for research and practice in higher education. Citizen science (CS) means including volunteers alongside professional researchers in the research process. CS is predominantly and traditionally used in natural sciences, but also increasingly in social sciences. The understanding of traditional CS is oftentimes completely transferred to citizen social science, which we argue is inadequate. As social sciences study human interactions, they involve people in their data collection all the time. Commonly used social science methods therefore already cover one type of CS that is defined by including volunteers mainly in data collection: contributory CS. This overlap creates an urgent need for redefining the boundaries of citizen social science. Our current historical moment is marked by a widespread sense of (ongoing and anticipated) crises, prompting calls to change existing economic, political, social, and environmental systems. This discourse has directed increased scholarly and policy-orientated attention to the concepts of "transformation" and "resilience." However, beyond attention, these concepts have increasingly adopted a place in rationales for policy action and measurements of its success, highlighting the need for conceptual clarity. In light of this, this paper reviews the use of transformation and resilience in the literature. These concepts appear across a broad spectrum of research fields, ranging from the natural to the social sciences. However, definitions and contexts vary broadly, further underlining the need for clarity. In this paper, we delve specifically into two disciplines: science, technology, and innovation (STI) policy research and economic history. Although unified in their explicit concern with societal change, the disciplines' different understandings of such change, particularly temporal aspects, offer fertile ground for exploring the divergent understandings, uses, and definitions of transformation and resilience in the literature. Through this work, the paper makes two main contributions. First, it produces a nuanced review of how the literature employs the concepts of transformation and resilience. Second, it offers an analysis of how transformation and resilience can be understood in relation to each other from a historical perspective. Mobile payment presently leads the fintech market as an alternative tool for daily transactions. • The lives of Black girls, femmes, transgender, and nonbinary (TGNB) young people who identify as LGBTQ + are punctuated by experiences of oppression-based, interpersonal, and systemic trauma. • Healing and creative resistance are strong driving forces facilitated by pride in one's identities, artistic expression, and mindfulness facilitated by time spent in nature and parks. • Individual and collective dreaming and futuring are central to the living of LGBTQ + identified Black girls, femmes, and TGNB young people. Black LGBTQ + girls, femmes, transgender and nonbinary youth and young adults experience high rates of sexual violence, and other forms of trauma, including oppression-based trauma related to racism, misogynoir, homophobia and transphobia. Black LGBTQ + girls, femmes, transgender and nonbinary young people, whose experiences are underexplored within social science research, also experience disparately harsh discipline and pushout within school settings while being disproportionately represented in the foster care and juvenile justice systems. However, they are also a community with a tremendous history of creative resistance, and legacies of activism and powerful healing practices. Within this paper we have disaggregated the interview data of 13 LGBTQ + identified participants from a larger qualitative study with 24 Black girls, femmes, transgender and nonbinary youth, aged 16–25, who reside in New York State. Data were analyzed using critical thematic analysis and three main themes emerged: 1) the significance of participants' experiences of childhood trauma, 2) participants' conceptualizations and experiences of healing and resistance, and 3) participants aspirations and dreams for their futures and the futures of their communities. Since its beginning in the 1980s, the mental health rhetoric research (MHRR) has explored the rhetorical construction of mental illness from a genre perspective. Despite a growing body of research on the rhetorical study of mental health in the West, the discourse of depression has been rarely explored in the Chinese context. This study investigates a corpus of 3217 posts in the Baidu depression community in China with an attempt to identify typical rhetorical features of the posts in the depression community as a genre. We intend, through an exploration of the exigences, social actions, and consequences of the posts, to facilitate a better understanding of the depressed population in China. We argue that the social exigences for the posts in online depression communities can be regarded as a failure of the rhetorical environment in real life and that expressing emotions, exchanging information, establishing interpersonal relationships, and communicating across spatiotemporal boundaries are the typified social actions performed by the posts in the Baidu depression community. Moreover, as a genre, the posts have successfully created an ambience of collective intimacy. In this paper, we argue that understanding and addressing the problem of poor-quality medical products requires a more interdisciplinary approach than has been evident to date. While prospective studies based on rigorous standardized methodologies are the gold standard for measuring the prevalence of poor-quality medical products and understanding their distribution nationally and internationally, they should be complemented by social science research to unpack the complex set of social, economic, and governance factors that underlie these patterns. In the following sections, we discuss specific examples of prospective quality surveys and of social science studies, highlighting the value of cross-sector partnerships in driving high-quality, policy-relevant research in this area. Research article sections, particularly the introductions, have received considerable scholarly attention over the years. However, linguistic strategies in the conclusion sections of research articles (RAs) remain under-researched. In light of this, we aspired to add to such scholarship by examining linguistic variation in RA conclusions across six disciplines. A multi-dimensional analysis of conclusions was conducted by using Biber's (1988) dimensions. Analytical results indicate that the conclusion writers in natural sciences and social sciences exhibit significant differences along D1 (Involved and Informational Discourse), D2 (Narrative and Non-Narrative), and D4 (Overt Expression of Persuasion). The findings suggest that conclusions from all six disciplines tend to use possibility modals (e.g., can) and prediction modals (e.g., will) to evaluate studies and to refer to future research directions. Additionally, conclusions in education and sociology tend to contain more interaction and persuasion elements than those in natural sciences, indicating a more human-centered research approach to soft sciences. On the other hand, conclusions in natural sciences are more information-condensed and procedure-oriented than those in social sciences. Purpose: Social policies are important determinants of population health but may have varying effects on subgroups of people. Evaluating heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs) of social policies is critical to determine how social policies will affect health inequities. Methods for evaluating HTEs are not standardized. Little is known about how often and by what methods HTEs are assessed in social policy and health research.Methods: A sample of 55 articles from 2019 on the health effects of social policies were evaluated for frequency of reporting HTEs; for what subgroupings HTEs were reported; frequency of a priori specification of intent to assess HTEs; and methods used for assessing HTEs.Results: A total of 24 (44%) studies described some form of HTE assessment, including by age, gender, education, race/ethnicity, and/or geography. Among studies assessing HTEs, 63% specified HTE assessment a priori, and most (71%) used descriptive methods such as stratification; 21% used statistical tests (e.g., interaction terms in a regression); and no studies used data-driven algorithms.Conclusions: Although understanding HTEs could enhance policy and practice-based efforts to reduce inequities, it is not routine research practice. This research aims to examine whether faculty's perceptions of the importance of the library's resources and services for their teaching, clinical practice or research were different based on disciplines, and to explore the degree that faculty's perceptions of the library's importance and its role have changed over time. The findings revealed that online journals, databases, and Interlibrary loan (ILL) were considered by the majority of faculty as the most important for faculty's research. Another key finding indicated that faculty from social sciences perceived assistance from a subject specialist librarian as more important than faculty members from physical sciences. The top three strategies faculty use to obtain articles not available through the university include searching for a freely available online version, using ILL, and obtaining it from Google Scholar. These findings assist the library to better understand our user community's needs. Long viewed by social scientists as a future imaginary, precision medicine is now materializing in many healthcare systems in the form of new diagnostic practices and novel treatment modalities, such as gene therapies. Based on an ethnographic study of the introduction of the first two clinically available in-vivo gene therapies in the Danish healthcare system, we investigate what it takes to make these therapies workable in practice. Drawing on social science literature on infrastructuring, we describe the many forms of mundane work required to fit these therapies into regulatory frameworks, political processes and daily work practices in the healthcare system. Further, we observe how the processes of infrastructuring required to introduce the gene therapies into clinical practice had transformative implications as they redistributed roles and responsibilities among clinicians, pharmacists, procurement agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers. • The effects of gene therapies depend on their translation into clinical practice. • Securing facilities and staff to handle GMO constitute major challenges. • Local innovations in work practices are made to overcome regulatory challenges. • Such innovations can have transformative effects on healthcare systems. The ongoing overdose and drug toxicity crisis in North America has contributed momentum to the emergence of safer supply prescribing and programs in Canada as a means of providing an alternative to the highly volatile unregulated drug supply. The implementation and scale-up of safer supply have been met with a vocal reaction on the part of news media commentators, conservative politicians, recovery industry representatives, and some prominent addiction medicine physicians. This reaction has largely converged around several narratives, based on unsubstantiated claims and anecdotal evidence, alleging that safer supply programs are generating a "new opioid epidemic", reflecting an emerging alignment among key institutional and political actors. Employing situational analysis method, and drawing on the policy studies and social science scholarship on moral panics, this essay examines news media coverage from January to July 2023, bringing this into dialogue with other existing empirical sources on safer supply (e.g. Coroner's reports, program evaluations, debates among experts in medical journals). We employ eight previously established criteria delineating moral panics to critically appraise public dialogue regarding safer supply, diverted medication, and claims of increased youth initiation to drug use and youth overdose. In detailing the emergence of a moral panic regarding safer supply, we trace historic continuities with earlier drug scares in Canadian history mobilized as tools of racialized poverty governance, as well as previous backlashes towards healthcare interventions for people who use drugs (PWUD). The essay assesses the claims of moral entrepreneurs against the current landscape of opioid use, diversion, and overdose among youth, notes the key role played by medical expertise in this and previous moral panics, and identifies what the convergence of these narratives materialize for PWUD and healthcare access, as well as the broader policy responses such narratives activate. We currently seem to witness an increase of right-wing populism, anti-immigration sentiments, and a general hostility towards 'others' in increasingly diverse and complex societies. Based on literature in social, political and psychological sciences, we hypothesize that plurality resistance predicts negative intergroup relations by increasing stereotypes. Using data of a recent, large-scale, and representative survey (N = 2304; 55% females; M Age = 55,19 years), we examined, across different models, whether plurality resistance is associated with anti-Muslim attitudes, mediated via general and gendered Muslim stereotypes. Structural equation models provided evidence for the hypothesized main effect, which was partly mediated by stereotypes, while multigroup mediational models confirmed the robustness of the present findings. Results highlight the usefulness of plurality resistance that contributes to the explanation of negative intergroup relations as well as the important role of stereotypes as cognitive short-cuts for diversity-overwhelmed individuals in order to simplify and, thus, deal with the complexities of contemporary societies. Objective: Prostate cancer is now deadlier than breast cancer in the UK, with more than 12,000 men dying from it in the country in 2018. Black men are nearly three times more likely to suffer prostate cancer, with one in four contracting the disease in their lifetime. Despite being a high risk group very few black men aged 45 and over visit their GP to discuss the pros and cons of screening. This is a problem as early onset of the disease presents no symptoms and when symptoms do appear, such as urinary problems, and men do visit a doctor it is often too late to reverse the cancer's spread. This study investigates using the strong social norm of wives and girlfriends being the guardian of black men's health as a way of influencing their behaviour.Methods: Using a historically controlled study via email we tested the social norm nudge in the field with 13 Afro-Caribbean organisations across the UK.Results: The trial found the social norm nudge produced a 15.5 per cent click-through rate, which was significantly higher than the historical controls. Meanwhile, the messenger effect saw a click-through rate of 38.5 per cent on men.Conclusion: At a national level the social norm nudge would equate to 37,315 black women taking positive action to find out more information about their husband or boyfriend's high risk of contracting prostate cancer.Practice Implications: Use clinicians as messengers in correspondence to promote engagement with information about prostate cancer screening. [Display omitted] This paper proposes an introductory review of the historical evolution of urban stormwater management, as well as of current trends, challenges, and changes of paradigm. It reminds us first that most of the existing urban stormwater infrastructures in developed cities are based on the modern urban sewer systems developed in the second half of the 19th century in Europe. They have been built and for decades managed almost solely by urban sanitation and water specialists, relatively independently of other technical services and, more generally, of other stakeholders in cities. They contributed significantly to public health and fast conveyance of stormwater outside the cities. However, at the turn of the 1970s, it became evident with increasing urbanisation that they also had drawbacks: artificialisation of soils, reduction of aquifer recharge, pollution of surface water and ecological impacts, etc. The paper indicates how new concepts and paradigms thereafter emerged to manage stormwater by means of more sustainable and integrated approaches, aiming to solve the problems engendered by the previous approaches. This integration embraces more and more disciplines and issues, far beyond the traditional field of urban water engineers and specialists. The paper attempts to explain the need for this evolution, making urban stormwater management more much complex, dealing and interacting with ecology, biodiversity, bioinspiration, architecture, landscape and water values, citizens' well-being, history, culture, and socio-economic aspects. L'étude de la mouvance QAnon, dans un maillage transdisciplinaire entre sciences humaines et psychanalyse, met à jour les enjeux inconscients de ce groupement représentatif de la post vérité. QAnon fait émerger des théories du complot radicalement participatives, marquées par l'usage des nouvelles technologies. La mouvance se retrouve dans une entreprise de fictionnalisation du monde de pouvoir, dans un travail de storytelling. La dynamique de groupe de la mouvance QAnon se caractérise par la mise en résonnance des individualités autour d'un complexe de la duplicité et de la facticité des figures de pouvoir. Ce complexe est régi par des mécanismes limites d'identification projective et intrusive fortement mobilisés par une société de moins en moins ancrée dans l'espace public et de plus en plus encline à l'exposition de soi sur les réseaux virtuels-numériques. The current era of post-truth invites reflection on what constitutes the networks of influence, power, and counter-power of our modern world that seem to have affected the unconscious organization of social groups. Can the study of this phenomenon of post-truth extend the psychoanalytical analyses of the singularities of the work of culture in our modern world? The study of the QAnon sphere of influence, in a transdisciplinary approach between human sciences and psychoanalysis, brings to light the unconscious stakes of this movement that represents the post-truth era. QAnon brings out radically participatory conspiracy theories, marked by the use of new technologies. The movement is engaged in an enterprise of fictionalizing the world of power, through processes of storytelling. The group dynamics of the QAnon movement are characterized by the resonance of individualities around a complex of the duplicity and facticity of powerful figures. This complex is governed by borderline mechanisms of projective and intrusive identification, strongly mobilized by a society with fewer and fewer anchors in the public space and one that is increasingly inclined to self-exposure on virtual-digital networks. Post-truth reveals a "complex of facticity" in the world. The relationship of a risk-management society to the Internet may have been the breeding ground for unconscious organizers of a new kind, fostering the emergence of this fictional relationship to the world that characterizes post-truth. Multilevel analysis of individual heterogeneity and discriminatory accuracy (MAIHDA) is a new approach to quantitative intersectional modelling. Along with an outcome of interest, MAIHDA entails the use of two sets of independent variables. These include group demographics such as race, gender, and poverty status as well as strata which are constructs such as Black female poor, Black female wealthy, and White female poor. These constructs represent the combination of the demographic variables. To operationalize the approach, an initial random intercepts model with strata as a level 2 context is specified. Then, another model is specified that includes the strata as well as the demographic variables as level 1 fixed effects. As such, it is argued that MAIHDA uniquely identifies the additive and intersectional effects for any given outcome. In this paper we show that MAIHDA falls short of this promise: the strata are an individual-level composite variable not a level 2 context. Rather than being analogous to neighborhoods as contexts, strata are analogous to socio-economic status which is a combination of individual-level demographic variables, albeit often presented as a group-level characteristic. The result is that the demographic variables are inserted in both level 2 and 1. This duplication across the levels in MAIHDA means that there is a built-in collinearity across the levels and that the models are mis-specified and, therefore, redundant. We conclude that single-level models with the demographic variables and interactions or with the strata as fixed effects are still the more accurate models for quantitative intersectional analyses. • There has been limited analysis of the MAIHDA method. • We compare MAIHDA to traditional HLM. • We show that strata are a level 1 composite variable not a level 2 context. • We identify duplication and collinearity in this approach. • We advocate for single level models in quantitative intersectionality. • The Mills, the Webers and the Russells were world-famous couples in the social sciences who used their marriages as living experiments for freedom and equality. • They engaged in avant-garde sexual relations and theorized their experience. • Their life-writing reveals the non-rational origins and outcomes of their published (or public) rational endeavours. • Dora Russell, radical feminist, preached the sexual revolution forty years before it actually took place. • Erotic powerplay and narcotic writing may bear on the worth of knowledge whence honesty biography cannot. Can love affect knowledge and knowledge affect love? John Stuart Mill and Harriet Taylor-Mill, Max and Marianne Weber, and Bertrand and Dora Russell had a definite vocation: they wanted to change the world. They questioned traditional gender arrangements through publications on equality, marriage, and education. They were liberal thinkers, advocating individual freedom and autonomy, vis à vis the constraints of state and society. Their partnership inspired their work, a living experiment conducted through their own unconventional relationship. Over time, their increasingly radical, avant-garde ideas on marriage complicated the ongoing negotiation over power and intimacy which typified their marriages. Building on the historiography of social science couples, and by means of an analysis of the micro-social dynamics of marriage as documented in the life writings of the Mills, the Webers, and the Russells, I analyse the connections between gender, intimacy, and creativity. Genome-wide association studies find that a large number of genetic variants jointly influence the risk of depression, which is summarized by polygenic indices (PGIs) of depressive symptoms and major depression. But PGIs by design remain agnostic about the causal mechanisms linking genes to depression. Meanwhile, the role of adverse life experiences in shaping depression risk is well-documented, including via gene-environment correlation. Building on theoretical work on dynamic and contingent genetic selection, we suggest that genetic influences may lead to differential selection into negative life experiences, forging gene-environment correlations that manifest in various permutations of depressive behaviors and environmental adversities. We also examine the extent to which apparent genetic influences may reflect spurious associations due to factors such as indirect genetic effects. Using data from two large surveys of middle-aged and older US adults, we investigate to what extent a PGI of depression predicts the risk of 27 different adversities. Further, to glean insights about the kinds of processes that might lead to gene-environment correlation, we augment these analyses with data from an original preregistered survey to measure cultural understandings of the behavioral dependence of various adversities. We find that the PGI predicts the risk of majority of adversities, net of class background and prior depression, and that the selection risk is greater for adversities typically perceived as being dependent on peoples' own behaviors. Taken together, our findings suggest that the PGI of depression largely picks up the risk of behaviorally-influenced adversities, but to a lesser degree also captures other environmental influences. Central Asian (CA) countries have been actively developing their research and knowledge production systems. However, inconsistent alignment with international research ethics norms creates challenges for researchers in CA to equally participate in global knowledge production. Based on quantitative survey responses of 296 social science researchers from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, this paper explores social scientists' understandings of international principles and practices of human participant research ethics. The findings show that CA social science researchers focus on a broad understanding of research integrity, focused on academic and professional integrity. The respondents highlighted the importance of individual researcher values such as honesty, responsibility, and respectfulness. With only 35 % of the respondents reporting the existence of a research ethics committee (REC) at their institutions, most respondents believe that human participant research ethics are an individual rather than an institutional responsibility in Central Asia. • Age, prior service receipt, and state of care best predict number of Chafee services. • Most variables in AFCARS have no ability to predict Chafee service receipt. • Forensic social science provides new insights into fundamental problems. The John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood (CFCIP) allocates funding to provide services to youth who are likely to age out of foster care. These services, covering everything from mentoring to financial aid, are expected to be distributed in ways that prepare youth for life after care. One natural question to ask is, which youth receive Chafee services? The present work makes use of the National Youth in Transition Database (NYTD), a large-scale administrative dataset that tracks services allocated to youth that use CFCIP funds to answer this question. Specifically, we conduct a forensic social science analysis of the NYTD data. To do so, we first use computational methods to help us uncover the factors that best predict which youth will receive services associated with service receipt. We find that the majority of variables in the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) and NYTD have limited or no utility in predicting Chafee service receipt, and that a subset of three variables—youth age, youth time in care, and the state in which a youth is in care—explain almost all variability in service receipt. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of these and other findings on future research on Chafee service allocation, and the utility of predictive modeling in child welfare, with a particular focus on the utility of the NYTD in this context. Uncertainty impacts the process of health communication. The management and tolerance of uncertainty during healthcare discussions have gained renewed focus due to the growing challenge of obtaining and delivering complex health information, and the offer of health services in diverse contexts. Prenatal genetic counseling (GC) provides education, support and testing options for patients and couples facing a genetic or congenital diagnosis or risk during pregnancy. Gathering detailed and accurate family history information is essential to determine a patient's genetic risk. In South Africa, contextual factors such as patient literacy, language diversity, limited written patient health records, and a lack of familiarity with GC services may increase the potential for misunderstandings during GC consultations. This study uses a qualitative sociolinguistic approach to analyse 9 video-recorded South African prenatal GC consultations to understand the impact of uncertainty on the process of gathering family history information. The findings reveal uncertainty is introduced in different ways during family history taking. This includes when patients have no knowledge about their family history; when they have some knowledge but the details are unclear; or when patients have knowledge but the details are confusing. Uncertainty can lead to interactional trouble in the form of knowledge asymmetries, interrogative questioning, reversals in epistemic authority, and the potential for mistrust. Suggestions are made for how genetic specialists can manage uncertainty in GC family history taking. These include recognizing contextual sources of uncertainty, understanding how patients may respond to uncertainty and being aware of personal responses to moments of discomfort. Specific communication training recommendations and video-based sociolinguistic methods to enhance reflection and communication practice are highlighted. This study attempts to explore the ways in which academics from four different disciplinary backgrounds (applied linguistics, education, electrical engineering, biology) engage with their discourse community when writing their research article (RA) introductions. To this end, 200 RA introductions were selected and examined in detail along with the Engagement System of the Appraisal Framework. It adopts a mixed approach to analyze individual engagements as well as combined ones embedded in different move-steps of RA introductions across various disciplines. Moreover, co-articulation of engagement items across longer stretches of text was also qualitatively observed for the purpose of revealing how prosodic spread of engagement values helps to effectively fulfill the rhetorical functions within this part-genre. This research revealed clear function-form mappings between rhetorical move-steps and their linguistic realization. In addition, disciplinary uniformity and variation on engagement values encoded in introductions were disclosed with commonalities weighing over differences. Despite the disciplinary differences on the evaluative features between natural and social sciences, disciplines belonging to either set of the natural/social field also vary from one another. The results have pedagogical implications for EAP practitioners in raising the novice writers' awareness of both discipline and genre when they approach academic writing through evaluative resources. Family planning programs have largely operated at the individual level, seeking to enhance individuals' knowledge of, change attitudes towards, and improve consistent use of efficacious contraception. Social science research has added to these efforts by emphasizing the structural influences that shape individuals' contraceptive attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Such work highlights the importance of embodied knowledge which is informed by social contexts and provides individuals with a sense of assuredness in knowing which contraception works well for them (and within their bodies). However, through qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with 59 self-identified women conducted from 2017 to 2018 across the state of Delaware in the United States, we argue that there is a powerful facet of contraceptive decision-making that lies beyond articulatable, conscious knowledge, which we name "embodied aversion." We draw on affect theory and stigma theory to introduce embodied aversion as an influential feeling and orientation away from implantable and insertable contraceptive methods that arises from internalized stigma around the reproductive body. Embodied aversion overpowers conscious understanding of contraceptive benefits like efficacy, ease of use, and longevity. Our research presents embodied aversion as a missing piece of contraceptive understanding that we argue is vital in more fully conceptualizing experiential dimensions of contraceptive use. Uncertainty, where we do not know the likelihood of future events, dominates our world. This article examines how economics as a profession and discipline can address uncertainty. From Frank Knight to John Maynard Keynes to Friedrich von Hayek to George Shackle, economics has highlighted the importance of uncertain knowledge and distinguished this from calculable risk. In this article we show how such insights were lost through the rise of narrow neoclassical thinking and were excluded through the emergence of a dominant economics of control that rose to prominence during the twentieth century and especially in the neoliberal era. However, through a range of perspectives in economics that emphasise the importance of complexity, informality, positionality and narratives, uncertainty is once again being embraced within an increasingly heterodox economics. In many ways, this chimes with the work of Albert Hirschman who, starting from the mid-1960s, emphasised the importance of addressing uncertainty in development theory and practice. Through two examples on pastoral development and global financial governance, we highlight the continued relevance of Hirschman's thinking on the importance of adaptation, flexibility and learning-by-doing as responses to uncertainty and for the development of reliable, robust approaches to development policy and practice. In conclusion, we argue that economics theory, methodologies, professional practice and training need to change, recovering some of the insights from previous generations of economic thinkers and practitioners, in order to reinvent an economics appropriate for our uncertain world. • Social sciences research in leishmaniases and Chagas disease (CD) increased over time. • Major themes found: Sociocultural, socioeconomic & historical dimensions of the diseases. • Understanding social institutions' impacts on NTD's burden is key to public health. • Future research can mitigate and undo the ways structural biases have infiltrated biomedicine. Scholars have called for increased attention to sociocultural, economic, historical, and political processes shaping Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) ecology. We conducted a scoping review to identify major research themes and the knowledge gaps in social science literature in leishmaniases or Chagas disease (CD). Following the scoping review protocol, we first determined the focus of the review to be centered on identifying research that approaches leishmaniases and CD from social science perspective and was indexed by large, biomedically focused databases. We then searched PubMed and Web of Science using "Leishmaniasis" and "Chagas disease" with "social science" or "anthropology" as search terms. We analyzed 199 articles (123 on leishmaniases and 76 on CD), categorizing them into three main research themes. Sociocultural dimensions of the diseases (leishmaniases=60.2 %; CD=68.4 %) primarily focused on individuals' knowledge, practices, and behaviors, barriers to accessing healthcare (especially in endemic regions), psychosocial effects, stigma, and traditional treatments. Research focused on socioeconomic dimensions of the diseases (leishmaniases=29.3 %; CD=19.7 %) included topics like household characteristics, social capital, and infrastructure access. A final theme, the historical and political contexts of the diseases (Leishmaniases=10.5 %; CD=11.9 %) was less common than other themes. Here, studies consider civil war and the (re)emergence of leishmaniasis, as well as the significance of CD discovery for scientific and public health in Brazil, which is the most common country for research on both leishmaniases and CD that draws on social science approaches. Future directions for research include focusing on how social institutions and economic factors shape diseases education, control measures, healthcare access, and quality of life of people affected by NTDs. Investigating resilience from a community perspective is significant to understand how migrant populations cope with migration trauma, thereby enabling us to reduce its negative effects and promote adjustment in the host context. This scoping review aimed to evaluate psychological and social science literature concerning community resilience in migrant communities. We employed the PRISMA methodology to evaluate literature from different databases. A total of 782 articles were identified, with 17 meeting the inclusion criteria and the characteristics of these studies (type of migrants, design, purpose and main results) regarding community resilience are presented. The findings cover a variety of factors that might promote community resilience and thematic analysis generated five themes: economic aspects, community competence, information, social capital and beliefs and attitudes. Based on our findings, suggestions for researchers are discussed and the importance of the host context in promoting migrant community resilience is highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
