We consider the recent relativistic bit commitment protocol introduced by Lunghi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 030502 (2015)] and present a new security analysis against classical attacks. In particular, while the initial complexity of the protocol scales double exponentially with the commitment time, our analysis shows that the correct dependence is only linear. This has dramatic implications in terms of implementation: in particular, the commitment time can easily be made arbitrarily long, by only requiring both parties to communicate classically and perform efficient classical computation. From length scale distributions characterizing frozen amorphous domains, we relate the s ensemble method with standard cooling and aging protocols for formin0 glass. We show that in a class of models where space-time scaling is in harmony with that of experiment, the spatial distributions of excitations obtained with the .v ensemble are identical to those obtained through cooling or aging, but the computational effort for applying the s ensemble is generally many orders of magnitude smaller than that of straightforward numerical simulation of cooling or aging. We find that in contrast to the equilibrium ergodic state, a nonequilibrium length scale characterizes the anticorrelation between excitations and encodes the preparation history of glass states. We demonstrate an efficient high-precision optical spectroscopy technique for single trapped ions with nonclosed transitions. In a double-shelving technique, the absorption of a single photon is first amplified to several phonons of a normal motional mode shared with a cotrapped cooling ion of a different species, before being further amplified to thousands of fluorescence photons emitted by the cooling ion using the standard electron shelving technique. We employ this extension of the photon recoil spectroscopy technique to perform the first high precision absolute frequency measurement of the 2D3/2 → 2B1/2 transition in calcium, resulting in a transition frequency of f = 346 000 234 867(96) kHz. Furthermore, we determine the isotope shift of this transition and the 2S1/2 → 2P1/2 transition for 42Ca+, 44Ca+, and 48Ca+ ions relative to 40Ca+ with an accuracy below 100 kHz. Improved field and mass shift constants of these transitions as well as changes in mean square nuclear charge radii are extracted from this high resolution data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tensor network states constitute an important variational set of quantum states for numerical studies of strongly correlated systems in condensed-matter physics, as well as in mathematical physics. This is specifically true for finitely correlated states or matrix-product operators, designed to capture mixed states of one-dimensional quantum systems. It is a well-known open problem to find an efficient algorithm that decides whether a given matrix-product operator actually represents a physical state that in particular has no negative eigenvalues. We address and answer this question by showing that the problem is provably undecidable in the thermodynamic limit and that the bounded version of the problem is NP-hard (nondeterministic-polynomial-time hard) in the system size. Furthermore, we discuss numerous connections between tensor network methods and (seemingly) different concepts treated before in the literature such as hidden Markov models and tensor trains. The spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of a two-dimensional hole gas in the inversion symmetric semiconductor Ge is studied in a strained-Ge/SiGe quantum well structure. We observe weak antilocalization (WAL) in the magnetoconductivity measurement, revealing that the WAL feature can be fully described by the k-cubic Rashba SOI theory. Furthermore, we demonstrate electric field control of the Rashba SOI. Our findings reveal that the heavy hole (HH) in strained Ge is a purely cubic Rashba system, which is consistent with the spin angular momentum mj = ± 3/2 nature of the HH wave function. For a real massless scalar field in general relativity with a negative cosmological constant, we uncover a large class of spherically symmetric initial conditions that are close to anti-de Sitter space (AdS) but whose numerical evolution does not result in black hole formation. According to the AdS/conformal field theory (CFT) dictionary, these bulk solutions are dual to states of a strongly interacting boundary CFT that fail to thermalize at late times. Furthermore, as these states are not stationary, they define dynamical CFT configurations that do not equilibrate. We develop a two-time-scale perturbative formalism that captures both direct and inverse cascades of energy and agrees with our fully nonlinear evolutions in the appropriate regime. We also show that this formalism admits a large class of quasiperiodic solutions. Finally, we demonstrate a striking parallel between the dynamics of AdS and the classic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a thermodynamic theory for a generic population of M individuals distributed into N groups (clusters). We construct the ensemble of all distributions with fixed M and N, introduce a selection functional that embodies the physics that governs the population, and obtain the distribution that emerges in the scaling limit as the most probable among all distributions consistent with the given physics. We develop the thermodynamics of the ensemble and establish a rigorous mapping to regular thermodynamics. We treat the emergence of a so-called giant component as a formal phase transition and show that the criteria for its emergence are entirely analogous to the equilibrium conditions in molecular systems. We perform numerical measurements of the moments of the position of a tracer particle in a two-dimensional periodic billiard model (Lorentz gas) with infinite corridors. This model is known to exhibit a weak form of superdiffusion, in the sense that there is a logarithmic correction to the linear growth in time of the meansquared displacement. We show numerically that this expected asymptotic behavior is easily overwhelmed by the subleading linear growth throughout the time range accessible to numerical simulations. We introduce a phenomenological theory for a new class of soft active fluids with the ability to synchronize. Our theoretical framework describes the macroscopic behavior of a collection of interacting anisotropic elements with cyclic internal dynamics and a periodic phase variable. This system can (i) spontaneously undergo a transition to a state with macroscopic orientational order, with the elements aligned, a liquid crystal, (ii) attain another broken symmetry state characterized by synchronization of their phase variables, or (iii) a combination of both types of order. We derive the equations describing a spatially homogeneous system and also study the hydrodynamic fluctuations of the soft modes in some of the ordered states. We find that synchronization can promote or inhibit the transition to a state with orientational order, and vice versa. We study the weak antilocalization (WAL) effect in the magnetoresistance of narrow HgTe wires fabricated in quantum wells with normal and inverted band ordering. Measurements at different gate voltages indicate that the WAL is only weakly affected by Rashba spin-orbit splitting and persists when the Rashba splitting is about zero. The WAL amplitude in wires with normal band ordering is an order of magnitude smaller than for wires with an inverted band structure. These observations are attributed to the Dirac-like dispersion of the energy bands in HgTe quantum wells. From the magnetic-field and temperature dependencies we extract the dephasing lengths and band Berry phases. The weaker WAL for samples with a normal band structure can be explained by a nonuniversal Berry phase which always exceeds π, the characteristic value for gapless Dirac fermions. Based on the worm algorithm in the path-integral representation, we propose a general quantum Monte Carlo algorithm suitable for parallelizing on a distributed-memory computer by domain decomposition. Of particular importance is its application to large lattice systems of bosons and spins. A large number of worms are introduced and its population is controlled by a fictitious transverse field. For a benchmark, we study the size dependence of the Bose-condensation order parameter of the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model with L×L×βt=10240×10240×16, using 3200 computing cores, which shows good parallelization efficiency. Probing deeper into the existing issues regarding the exit probability (EP) in one-dimensional dynamical models, we consider several models where the states are represented by Ising spins and the information flows inwards. At zero temperature, these systems evolve to either of two absorbing states. The EP, E(x), which is the probability that the system ends up with all up spins starting with x fraction of up spins, is found to have the general form E(x) = xα/[xα + (1 -- x)α]. The EP exponent a strongly depends on r, the range of interaction, the symmetry of the model, and the induced fluctuation. Even in a nearest-neighbor model, a nonlinear form of the EP can be obtained by controlling the fluctuations, and for the same range, different models give different results for a. Nonuniversal behavior of the EP is thus clearly established and the results are compared to those of existing studies in models with outflow dynamics to distinguish the two dynamical scenarios. Diffusion in nonhomogeneous media is described by a dynamical process driven by a general Lévy noise and subordinated to a random time; the subordinator depends on the position. This problem is approximated by a multiplicative process subordinated to a random time: it separately takes into account effects related to the medium structure and the memory. Density distributions and moments are derived from the solutions of the corresponding Langevin equation and compared with the numerical calculations for the exact problem. The ergodicity breaking parameter is a measure for the heterogeneity among different trajectories of one ensemble. In this report, this parameter is calculated for fractional Brownian motion with a random change of time scale, often called "subordination." The exact reduced density-matrix functional is derived from the Luttinger-Ward functional of the single-particle Green's function. Thereby, a formal link is provided between diagrammatic many-body approaches using Green's functions on the one hand and theories based on many-body wave functions on the other. This link can be used to explicitly construct approximations for the density-matrix functional that are equivalent to standard diagrammatic resummation techniques and to nonperturbative dynamical mean field theory in particular. Contrary to functionals of the Green's function, the exact density-matrix functional is convex and thus provides a true minimum principle which facilitates the calculation of the grand potential and derived equilibrium properties. We consider a hydrodynamic description of the spherically symmetric outward flow of nuclear matter, using a nuclear model that introduces a weakly dispersive effect in the flow. On the resulting stationary conditions of the flow, we apply an Eulerian scheme to derive a fully nonlinear equation of a time-dependent radial perturbation. In its linearized limit, with no dispersion, this equation implies the static acoustic horizon of an analog gravity model. This horizon also defines the minimum radius of the steady flow. We model the perturbation as a high-frequency traveling wave, in which the weak dispersion is taken iteratively. A WKB analysis shows that even arbitrarily small values of dispersion make the horizon fully opaque to any acoustic disturbance propagating against the bulk flow, with the amplitude and the energy flux of the radial perturbation decaying exponentially just outside the horizon. Recently, the Grassmann-tensor-entanglement renormalization group (GTERG) algorithm has been proposed as a generic variational approach to study strongly correlated boson/fermion systems [Gu et al., arXiv: 1004.2563]. However, the weakness of such a simple variational approach is that generic Grassmann tensor product states (GTPS) with large inner dimension D will contain a large number of variational parameters which are hard to be determined through usual minimization procedures. In this paper, we first introduce a standard form of GTPS which significantly simplifies the representations. Then we describe a simple imaginary-time-evolution algorithm to efficiently update the GTPS based on the fermion coherent state representation and show that all the algorithms developed for usual tensor product states (TPS) can be implemented for GTPS in a similar way. Finally, we study the environment effect for the GTERG approach and propose a simple method to further improve its accuracy. We demonstrate our algorithms by studying some simple two-dimensional free and interacting fermion systems on honeycomb lattice, including both off-critical and critical cases. The adaptive voter model is a paradigmatic model in the study of opinion formation. Here we propose an extension for this model, in which conflicts are resolved by obtaining another opinion, and analytically study the time required for consensus to emerge. Our results shed light on the rich phenomenology of both the original and extended adaptive voter models, including a dynamical phase transition in the scaling behavior of the mean time to consensus. We develop a path-based approach to continuous-time random walks on networks with arbitrarily weighted edges. We describe an efficient numerical algorithm for calculating statistical properties of the stochastic path ensemble. After demonstrating our approach on two reaction rate problems, we present a biophysical model that describes how proteins evolve new functions while maintaining thermodynamic stability. We use our methodology to characterize dynamics of evolutionary adaptation, reproducing several key features observed in directed evolution experiments. We find that proteins generally fall into two qualitatively different regimes of adaptation depending on their binding and folding energetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mellin-Barnes (MB) integrals are well-known objects appearing in many branches of mathematics and physics, ranging from hypergeometric functions theory to quantum field theory, solid-state physics, asymptotic theory, etc. Although MB integrals have been studied for more than one century, until now there has been no systematic computational technique of the multiple series representations of N-fold MB integrals for N>2. Relying on a simple geometrical analysis based on conic hulls, we show here a solution to this important problem. Our method can be applied to resonant (i.e., logarithmic) and nonresonant cases and, depending on the form of the MB integrand, it gives rise to convergent series representations or diverging asymptotic ones. When convergent series are obtained, the method also allows, in general, the determination of a single "master series" for each series representation, which considerably simplifies convergence studies and/or numerical checks. We provide, along with this Letter, a Mathematica implementation of our technique with examples of applications. Trapping processes constitute a primary problem of random walks, which characterize various other dynamical processes taking place on networks. Most previous works focused on the case of binary networks, while there is much less related research about weighted networks. In this paper, we propose a general framework for the trapping problem on a weighted network with a perfect trap fixed at an arbitrary node. By utilizing the spectral graph theory, we provide an exact formula for mean first-passage time (MFPT) from one node to another, based on which we deduce an explicit expression for average trapping time (ATT) in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix associated with the weighted graph, where ATT is the average of MFPTs to the trap over all source nodes. We then further derive a sharp lower bound for the ATT in terms of only the local information of the trap node, which can be obtained in some graphs. Moreover, we deduce the ATT when the trap is distributed uniformly in the whole network. Our results show that network weights play a significant role in the trapping process. To apply our framework, we use the obtained formulas to study random walks on two specific networks: trapping in weighted uncorrelated networks with a deep trap, the weights of which are characterized by a parameter, and Levy random walks in a connected binary network with a trap distributed uniformly, which can be looked on as random walks on a weighted network. For weighted uncorrelated networks we show that the ATT to any target node depends on the weight parameter, that is, the ATT to any node can change drastically by modifying the parameter, a phenomenon that is in contrast to that for trapping in binary networks. For Levy random walks in any connected network, by using their equivalence to random walks on a weighted complete network, we obtain the optimal exponent characterizing Levy random walks, which have the minimal average of ATTs taken over all target nodes. SLE(k,p) is a variant of Schramm-Loewner Evolution (SLE) which describes the curves which are not conformal invariant, but are self-similar due to the presence of some other preferred points on the boundary. In this paper we study the left passage probability (LPP) of SLE(fc,p) through field theoretical framework and find the differential equation governing this probability. This equation is numerically solved for the special case K = 2 and hp = 0 in which hp is the conformal weight of the boundary changing (bcc) operator. It may be referred to loop erased random walk (LERW) and Abelian sandpile model (ASM) with a sink on its boundary. For the curve which starts from fo and conditioned by a change of boundary conditions at x0, we find that this probability depends significantly on the factor xo -- £o- We also present the perturbative general solution for large x0. We consider multiple diseases spreading in a static configuration model network. We make standard assumptions that infection transmits from neighbor to neighbor at a disease-specific rate and infected individuals recover at a disease-specific rate. Infection by one disease confers immediate and permanent immunity to infection by any disease. Under these assumptions, we find a simple, low-dimensional ordinary differential equations model which captures the global dynamics of the infection. The dynamics depend strongly on initial conditions. Although we motivate this Rapid Communication with infectious disease, the model may be adapted to the spread of other infectious agents such as competing political beliefs, or adoption of new technologies if these are influenced by contacts. Dephasing—phase randomization of a quantum superposition state—is a major obstacle for the realization of high fidelity quantum logic operations. Here, we implement a two-qubit controlled-NOT gate using dynamical decoupling (DD), despite the gate time being more than 1 order of magnitude longer than the intrinsic coherence time of the system. For realizing this universal conditional quantum gate, we have devised a concatenated DD sequence that ensures robustness against imperfections of DD pulses that otherwise may destroy quantum information or interfere with gate dynamics. We compare its performance with three other types of DD sequences. These experiments are carried out using a well-controlled prototype quantum system—trapped atomic ions coupled by an effective spin-spin interaction. The scheme for protecting conditional quantum gates demonstrated here is applicable to other physical systems, such as nitrogen vacancy centers, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, and circuit quantum electrodynamics. The chemical potentials of multicomponent fluids are derived in terms of the pair correlation functions for arbitrary number of components, interaction potentials, and dimensionality. The formally exact result is particularized to hard-sphere mixtures with zero or positive nonadditivity. As a simple application, the chemical potentials of three-dimensional additive hard-sphere mixtures are derived from the Perçus-Yevick theory and the associated equation of state is obtained. This Perçus-Yevick chemical-route equation of state is shown to be more accurate than the virial equation of state. An interpolation between the chemical-potential and compressibility routes exhibits a better performance than the well-known Boublik-Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland equation of state. We aim at quantitatively determining transport parameters like conductivity, mean free path, etc., for simple models of spatially completely disordered quantum systems, comparable to 'the systems which are sometimes referred to as Lifshitz models. While some low-energy eigenstates in such models always show Anderson localization, we focus on models for which most states of the full spectrum are delocalized, i.e., on the metallic regime. For the latter we determine transport parameters in the limit of high temperatures and low fillings using linear response theory. The Einstein relation (proportionality of conductivity and diffusion coefficient) is addressed numerically and analytically and found to hold. Furthermore, we find the transport behavior for some models to be in accord with a Boltzmann equation, i.e., rather long mean free paths, exponentially decaying currents, while this does not apply to other models even though they are also almost completely delocalized. Percolation describes the sudden emergence of large-scale connectivity as edges are added to a lattice or random network. In the Bohman-Frieze-Wormald model (BFW) of percolation, edges sampled from a random graph are considered individually and either added to the graph or rejected provided that the fraction of accepted edges is never smaller than a decreasing function with asymptotic value of α, a constant. The BFW process has been studied as a model system for investigating the underlying mechanisms leading to discontinuous phase transitions in percolation. Here we focus on the regime α ∈ [0.6,0.95] where it is known that only one giant component, denoted C1, initially appears at the discontinuous phase transition. We show that at some point in the supercritical regime C1 stops growing and eventually a second giant component, denoted emerges in a continuous percolation transition. The delay between the emergence of Q and C2 and their asymptotic sizes both depend on the value of a and we establish by several techniques that there exists a bifurcation point αc = 0.763 ± 0.002. For α ∈ [0.6,αc), Q stops growing the instant it emerges and the delay between the emergence of Q and C2 decreases with increasing a. For a ∈ (αc,0.95], in contrast, Q continues growing into the supercritical regime and the delay between the emergence of C1 and C2 increases with increasing α. As we show, αc marks the minimal delay possible between the emergence of C1 and C2 (i.e., the smallest edge density for which C2 can exist). We propose a new measure to characterize the dimension of complex networks based on the ergodic theory of dynamical systems. This measure is derived from the correlation sum of a trajectory generated by a random walker navigating the network, and extends the classical Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm to the context of complex networks. The method is validated with reliable results for both synthetic networks and real-world networks such as the world air-transportation network or urban networks, and provides a computationally fast way for estimating the dimensionality of networks which only relies on the local information provided by the walkers. With nonrelativistic QCD factorization, we present the first complete next-to-leading order study on the polarization of prompt J/ψ hadroproduction by including feeddown from χc(3PJ1, 3S18) and ψ(2s) which turn out to be very important parts. By using the color-octet long-distance matrix elements obtained from a combined fit of the measurements at the Tevatron and LHC for J/ψ, ψ(2s) and χc the prompt J/ψ polarization predictions are presented, and the results are in agreement with the CDF run I data (except two points), but in conflict with the CDF run II data, while they are close to the ALICE data (inclusive J/ψ). The paper authored by Lima et al. [Phys. Rev. E 61, 3260 (2000)] has discussed the dispersion relation and Landau damping of a Langmuir wave in the context of the nonextensive statistics proposed by Tsallis. However, the results obtained in this paper are not appropriate. In this comment on the paper we shall derive the correct analytic formulas for both the dispersion relation and Landau damping in the Tsallis formalism. The principle of mixed convolved action provides a new rigorous weak variational formalism for a broad range of initial value problems in mathematical physics and mechanics. Here, the focus is initially on classical single-degree-of-freedom oscillators incorporating either Kelvin-Voigt or Maxwell dissipative elements and then, subsequently, on systems that utilize fractional-derivative constitutive models. In each case, an appropriate mixed convolved action is formulated, and a corresponding weak form is discretized in time using temporal shape functions to produce an algorithm suitable for numerical solution. Several examples are considered to validate the mixed convolved action principles and to investigate the performance of the numerical algorithms. For undamped systems, the algorithm is found to be symplectic and unconditionally stable with respect to the time step. In the case of dissipative systems, the approach is shown to be robust and to be accurate with good convergence characteristics for both classical and fractional-derivative based models. Binding of ligands to DNA can be studied by measuring the change of the persistence length of the complex formed, in single-molecule assays. We propose a methodology for persistence length data analysis based on a quenched disorder statistical model and describing the binding isotherm by a Hill-type equation. We obtain an expression for the effective persistence length as a function of the total ligand concentration, which we apply to our data of the DNA-cationic β-cyclodextrin and to the DNA-HU protein data available in the literature, determining the values of the local persistence lengths, the dissociation constant, and the degree of cooperativity for each set of data. In both cases the persistence length behaves nonmonotonically as a function of ligand concentration and based on the results obtained we discuss some physical aspects of the interplay between DNA elasticity and cooperative binding of ligands. It is shown that extensions to general relativity, which introduce a strongly coupled scalar field, can be viable if the interaction has a nonconformal form. Such disformal coupling depends upon the gradients of the scalar field. Thus, if the field is locally static and smooth, the coupling becomes invisjble in the Solar System: this is the disformal screening mechanism A cosmological model is considered where the disformal coupling triggers the onset of accelerated expansion after a scaling matter era, giving a good fit to a wide range of background observational data. We demonstrate by using density functional calculations that the In/Si(l 1 1)-Λ/7 Χ Λ/3 surface consists of an In double layer, contrary to the prevailing idea that the In overlayer on this surface is just one atom thick and thus can be used to represent the ultimate 2D limit of metal overlayer properties. The double-layer In structure is sound energetically and microscopically and, above all, well reproduces the measured photoemission band structure that could not be fairly compared with any single-layer In model. Pure glass is defined as a thermodynamic phase in which typical equilibrium particle configurations have macroscopic overlaps with one of some special irregular configurations. A direct numerical simulation of Faraday waves is carried out in a minimal hexagonal domain. Over long times, we observe the alternation of patterns we call quasihexagons and beaded stripes. The symmetries and spatial Fourier spectra of these patterns are analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
