TECHNOLOGICAL innovations , *DIGITAL technology , *HIGH technology industries , *INNOVATIONS in business , *EXPORTS ,MANUFACTURING industries personnel - Abstract
Technological innovation is considered a key element of industrialization and determines the efficiency of a country's pattern of opening up. The role of innovation in building a strong export system is related to various channels of domestic innovation and international technology spillovers. The impact of innovation on exports can be associated with domestic R&D efforts and technological spillovers of foreign R&D. The strongest consensus in the theoretical literature is that exports are often a by-product of the innovative activities of domestic firms. This study investigates the causality relationship between the number of R&D personnel working in the manufacturing industry and exports in Turkey. The study covers the period 2009-2022. Toda Yamamoto causality analysis was used to test causality and a bidirectional causality relationship was found both from exports to R&D personnel and from R&D personnel to exports. In order to further increase the export competitiveness of Turkey's manufacturing industry, some suggestions can be made, such as paying attention to the development of digital infrastructure, optimizing the integration of the manufacturing sector and the digital economy, and increasing international cooperation in digital technology innovation. WORK-related injuries , *DECISION making , *LOGISTIC regression analysis , *DECISION trees , *MANUFACTURING industries - Abstract
Turkish manufacturing industry is in the top three in terms of occupational accident frequency among sectors. Therefore, there is a need to determine accident cause-effect relationships in order to improve occupational safety and minimize the risks that cause occupational accidents in the manufacturing industry. An integreated data driven approach is proposed to find patterns among occupational accidents in Turkish manufacturing systems. The proposed approach uses multinomial logit model (MLM) and decision tree algorithms, namely C5.0, Classification and Regression Trees (C&RT), The quaternion estimation (QUEST), Chi-square automatic interaction detector (CHAID) ve Random Trees. In this study, 307,590 occupational accidents in the Turkish manufacturing industry between 2013 and 2019 are used. It is found that there is a statistically significant relationship among division, geographical location of the accident, year, deviation, hour day, gender and age for all accidents with injury, death and loss of limb according to the absence of disability. Additionally, division, geographical location of the accident and year are among the top five predictors based on decision tree algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aims to examine how government incentives affect SME employment in Türkiye's manufacturing sector. Methodology: The dataset used in this study was derived from a survey conducted by a privately owned London-based company with the assistance of Türkiye's Ministry of Industry and Technology. Ordinary least squares and two-stage least squares regression techniques were used to analyze the relationship between government incentives and employment. Findings: In the analysis, we found that between 2013 and 2016, jobs were created by Turkish manufacturing SMEs with the use of state assistance. Firm-level characteristics, including firms' age, capacity utilization rate, and innovative activities, were also found to have a substantial impact on SME employment. Originality: Our study is the first to examine the impact of incentives on employment in manufacturing SMEs in Türkiye using a micro dataset administered to 10.063 manufacturing firms by the Ministry of Industry and Technology.

Purpose: This study analyses the relationship between capital structure and profitability levels of manufacturing industry companies operating in Türkiye between the years 2006-2020. Methodology: The relationship between capital structure and the profitability of Turkish manufacturing industry companies was analyzed using the standard error estimator proposed by Driscoll and Kraay (1998). In this context, sub-panel data models were created. Findings: The findings showed that capital structure changes (short-term debt, long-term debt, and total debt) in the manufacturing industry are negatively related to both return on assets and return on equity. Originality: It is thought that this study will contribute to the existing literature in terms of better understanding the relationship between the changes in the capital structure decisions of the manufacturing industry companies operating in Türkiye, both their return on assets and their return on equity, taking into account their sub-sectors.

- Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the determinants of the manufacturing industry production index (LIPI) in the case of Turkey. The variables chosen for this purpose are the loans extended by the banking sector to the manufacturing industry (LC), the interest rate applied to these loans (INT), the manufacturing industry capacity utilization rate (CU), the manufacturing industry domestic producer price index (LPI). In addition to these variables, the 2008 global economic crisis and the COVID-19 health crisis were added to the model as dummy variables. The data used are monthly data for the period 2007:1-2022:9 published by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) and the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT). This relationship was tested using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL). The findings obtained from the study revealed that there is a cointegration relationship between the manufacturing industry production index and selected variables. This study, which was prepared using current data, is expected to contribute to the literature in terms of revealing the effects of loans, loan interest rates and capacity utilization rates provided to the manufacturing industry by the banking sector, on the output potential of the sector under the influence of the 2008 global economic crisis and COVID-19 health crisis. VECTOR autoregression model , *INTERNATIONAL trade , *FOREIGN exchange rates , *MANUFACTURING industries - Abstract
In this study, the effect of real effective exchange rate on the data of manufacturing industry export and import, which is obtained by classifying the products according to technology density, is being investigated. It is aimed at determining the effect of real effective exchange rate on import and export of high, medium-high, medium-low and low-technology product groups in the current study, within which the work of quarterly data for the period 1996-2018, for Turkey is taken into account. In accordance with this purpose, in order to determine the relationship between the related variables, Johansen cointegration within the scope of VAR analysis, Toda-Yamamoto causality test, effect response function and variance decomposition methods were used. According to the findings of the analysis when real effective rates and shocks compared in terms of exports high-tech products are more sensitive when compared to other technology products, in terms of imports high technology products are more sensitive to low technology products. Moreover, except for the medium-low technology level, it is observed that the exchange rate elasticity of imports increases as the technology level of the products increases. Therefore, it can be said that the effect of real effective exchange rate on manufacturing foreign trade varies according to technology density for Turkey. According to the Toda-Yamamoto causality analysis, no causal link between the real effective exchange rate and export was found in any of the export models, while the causality relationship between the exchange rate and the import in import models was determined at all technology levels except medium-high technology. INTERNATIONAL trade , *MANUFACTURING industries - Abstract
In this study, it is aimed to determine the specialization level in Türkiye's foreign trade in the 2010s in terms of the general and sub-industries of the manufacturing industry and to examine the development trends. The level of specialization in the manufacturing industry in general is determined by using both the Michaely index and the foreign trade specialization index in the 2010-2019 period. Specialization analyses in sub-sectors are made according to the foreign trade specialization index, taking into account the feature that includes additional information in terms of intra-industry trade. In these analyses, the positions of the industries are listed and their development trends are examined in terms of export and import-based specialization. It is determined that there is no significant change in the specialization level of manufacturing industry trade in general. However, significant differences have been identified in the development trends and technological qualification structures of sub-industries, both in the level of specialization, in the form of export or import-based or transition from one to another. - Abstract
In this study, the relationship between domestic sales and exports of the manufacturing industry, which has a strategic importance in Turkey's exports, is examined for the years 2010-2020. The data set of the study consists of manufacturing industry enterprises that are traded in Borsa Istanbul (BIST), included in the BIST Industrial Index, and with an asset size of over 100 million TL as of 2010. In the study, panel cointegration tests were applied within the framework of panel data analysis. The long-term regression coefficients of the model were examined and the Panel Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) estimator was used for model estimation. In addition, panel causality test was applied to examine the causality relationship between export and domestic sales variables. It has been concluded that there is a cointegration relationship between the domestic sales and exports of 68 industrial enterprises included in the BIST Industrial Index as of the 2010-2020 period. It has also been determined that there is a complementary relationship between these two variables in the economic sense within the framework of the relevant literature. According to the results of the empirical analysis, it was found that the 1% increase in the domestic sales of the manufacturing industry enterprises included in the BIST Industrial Index increased the exports of these enterprises by %0,77, while the 1% increase in the exports of these enterprises increased their domestic sales by %0,17. COBB-Douglas production function , *FOREIGN investments , *ECONOMIC policy , *HUMAN capital , *CAPITAL stock - Abstract
Since the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, active economic policies have been implemented continuously for the development of the manufacturing industry. Examining and developing this sector, which has a 20% share in GDP, is very important for policy recommendations. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effects of imports and exports and human capital on the manufacturing industry, and in this context, the Cobb-Douglas production function was calculated. Within the scope of the analysis in which two different models were established, the Driscoll-Kraay Fixed Effects Model with Standard Errors was estimated. In both models, the share of labor and manufacturing goods imports in goods imports was found to be negative. Capital, human capital and the share of manufacturing goods exports in goods exports were determined as positive. In addition, while the constant term is insignificant in both models, the exchange rate is found insignificant in the second model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Globally taken similar measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions in the supply and demand schedules and increase in uncertainty. The shock of this pandemic has forced many firms to take new actions and make new business decisions. The aim of this study is to examine the heterogeneity of the production, employment and policy decisions taken by the firms against the pandemic across productivity distribution.Methdology: For this purpose, pandemic specific survey responses of a representative panel of 1207 Turkish manufacturing firms matched with pre-pandemic tendency survey responses and administrative data and cross sectional models are employed.Findings: Estimation results show that productive firms of the Turkish manufacturing sector have taken firmer stance against the devastating economic impact of the pandemic at the initial wave. They are more likely to continue the production and less likely to reduce the employment and to benefit from government supports.Originality: This study uses unique firm-level dataset that enable to investigate the effects of the pandemic and mitigation policies on firms using representative survey data for Turkish manufacturing sector. This will contribute to the existing narrow empirical literature on the impact of COVID-19 on manufacturing firms by providing new evidence on a large developing country, Türkiye, based on representative firm-level dataset.

Cash flow statement is reported with cash flow components consisting of fundamental, investing and financing activities. A financial pattern is realized according to the positive and negative cash flow direction that occurs in each of these components. With these realized cash flow patterns, eight possible cash flow profiles are determined. In this context, the aim of the study is to examine the cash flow profiles of the companies operating in the manufacturing industry sector traded in Borsa Istanbul. For this purpose, the cash flow table data of a total of 70 enterprises consisting of enterprises in the manufacturing industry sub-sectors for the period 2012-2021 were used. According to the review, It has been determined that the enterprises are represented by profile 2, which has the quality of successful enterprise, profile 4, which has the quality of growing enterprise, and profile 6, which has the quality of young enterprise, in all years, respectively. SOCIAL capital , *INFRASTRUCTURE funds , *MANUFACTURING industries , *ECONOMIC history ,TURKISH history - Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine which option is valid for unbalanced growth in Turkey during the 1968-2006 period. For this purpose, first, determinations were made regarding the options in unbalanced growth. There are two options in an unbalanced growth strategy. The first of these is to allocate investments to direct productive activities first, while the second option is to allocate investments primarily to social overhead capital, i.e. infrastructure. In the study, firstly, the resources allocated for direct productive activities, that is, the manufacturing industry, and the resources allocated to social overhead capital, that is, infrastructure, are compared. In the second step, the relationship between the resource allocated to direct productive activities and the resource allocated to social overhead capital was tested. According to the results of the study, the excess capacity in social overhead capital stimulates direct productive activities at the end of 3 periods and leads to an increase in manufacturing industry investments. 10% increase in infrastructure investments increases the manufacturing industry investments by 4.87% as a result of a 3-year lag. No statistically significant results were obtained regarding the effect of manufacturing industry investments on infrastructure investments. In the study, as infrastructure investments, transportation and energy investments were also examined separately. Accordingly, a 10% increase in transportation investments increases manufacturing industry investments by 5.081% as a result of a 3-year lag. A 10% increase in manufacturing industry investments reduces transportation investments by 6,095% as a result of 3 years lag. Since significant relationships could not be determined between manufacturing industry investments and energy investments, no conclusion was reached regarding unbalanced growth. These results are largely compatible with one of Hirschman's unbalanced growth options, and point to an unbalanced growth path in which an excess capacity in social overhead capital prevails.

Çalışma ile ortaya konan dikkat çekici sonuçların hem alan araştırmacıları hem de pazarlama yöneticilerine katkı sunması arzu edilmektedir., E-marketing orientation is a new era of marketing where digital solutions are integrated into marketing activities. This integrated marketing approach has been the preferred approach for many businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is believed that e-marketing activities can provide a solution to the financial contraction caused by the pandemic crisis with cost advantage and ease of access. For this purpose, the study examined the orientation of 100 companies operating in OSTIM Organized Industrial Zone of Ankara province to e-marketing activities together with the Covid-19 pandemic process. At the same time, the effect of e-marketing orientation on the profitability of firms and the role of firm turnover in this relationship were investigated. In this context, quantitative analyses were carried out by collecting cross-sectional data from companies using the survey method. According to the results obtained, while there is a positive and significant relationship between e-marketing orientation and profitability, it has been revealed that turnover has a mediator role on this relationship. While the effect of e-marketing orientation is higher in companies with low turnover; this effect is also lower in companies with high turnover. It is desirable that the remarkable results revealed by the study contribute to both field researchers and marketing managers.

Although the manufacturing industry in Turkey has experienced significant progress in terms of production diversity and exports in recent years, the dependence of the manufacturing industry sectors on imported intermediate goods paves the way for various structural problems. This study contributes to the literature by calculating how the dependency ratios have changed in Turkish manufacturing industries during 2000s, and compare the current structure of Turkish manufacturing industry with East Asian countries that are in competition with Turkey in global markets. Purpose: This paper aims to calculate the import dependency ratio of the manufacturing industries in Turkey with using different indicators and to compare the current situation of the Turkish manufacturing industry with those of East Asian countries over these indicators.Method: In this study, using WIOD/NIOT Input-Output tables covering the period of 2000-2014, the import input ratios -vertical specialization ratios- in total production and exports of the manufacturing industry sectors of Turkey and East Asian countries were calculated and comparisons were made based on these results. In our study, calculations were made with using the Leontief inverse matrix in WIOD/NIOT Input-Output tables between 2000-2014 and HIY method developed by Hummels et al. (2001) was used.Findings: Our calculations show that the sectors that Turkey prioritized in the 11th Development Plan experienced significant increases in import dependency and/or foreign shares in production in the relevant period. In light of our findings and comparisons, it can be concluded that while Turkey's manufacturing industry and exports have concentrated on the low and medium-low technology group, the weight has shifted to the medium-high and high technology group in East Asian countries.Originality: Unlike previous literature, this study classifies the vertical specialization of Turkey's manufacturing industry and the ratios of foreign added value in total production in terms of different technology groups and compares the results with the ratios of East Asian countries., Türkiye’de imalat sanayi üretim çeşitliliği ve ihracat açısından son yıllarda kayda değer ilerlemeler yaşamış olmasına rağmen, imalat sanayi sektörlerinin ithal ara mallarına olan bağımlılığı çeşitli yapısal problemlere zemin hazırlamaktadır.

Even so, in the industrialization policies, supply-side dynamics are considered and demand-side dynamics are ignored. However, for sustainable industrialization and growth, demand-side dynamics should be considered. In this context, the study aims to analyse how demand-side dynamics contribute to the economy and manufacturing industry. For this, demand decomposition was made in BRIC countries by using the Dutch method proposed by Kranendonk and Verbruggen (2005; 2008). The National Input-Output Tables (NIOTs) in the WIOD for the 2000-2014 period were used. According to the findings, domestic final demand is an important dynamic of the economy in BRIC countries. Similarly, in the manufacturing industry, excluding China, domestic final demand is more dominant. When compared to the total economy, foreign value added is higher in the manufacturing industry. During the 2008-2009 financial crisis, domestic final demand and domestic value-added increased, while final foreign demand and foreign value-added decreased. Besides, especially in developing countries to demand to be an effective dynamic, policies that increase real income, provide demand diversity and expand the middle class should be produced.

Since 1980 with the accelerating trends of globalization, the international fragmentation of production was one of the drastic transformations that occurred in the world economy. It is defined as the process whereby more than one country participates in previously integrated production activities (vertical specialization) involved in producing a final good. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the post-socialist Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) boost their participation in global production networks. The main motivation of this paper is analyzing the extent to which the CEECs that joined the EU in 2004 (Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia) are involved in the global production process. Based on the World Input-Output Database (WIOD); HIY method proposed by Hummels, Ishii & Yi (2001) is applied to the national input-output tables (NIOTs) of CEECs to estimate the manufacturing industries’ vertical specialization rate during 2000-2014. The results revealed that the CEECs’ vertical specialization rate increased during 2000-2014 but decreased during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis. The highest rate was respectively accounted for Hungary, Slovakia, Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Poland and Latvia. The countries with the highest manufacturing industry’s vertical specialization were Hungary, Estonia, Slovakia, Latvia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Poland and Lithuania, respectively. The manufacturing industries’ vertical specialization rate in Estonia, Hungary, Latvia and Poland was higher than that of the entire economy. Finally, in the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland; higher rates were accounted for the medium-low technology sectors, but for medium-high and high-tech sectors in Estonia, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia.

In the standard macroeconomic literature, the impact of the changes in the value of the national currency has only been evaluated in terms of incomes. The inference from this is that exchange rate increases will increase incomes and investments through exports. The 3rd generation crisis studies, however, emphasized that the depreciation of the national currency would not only increase investments through exports by taking into account the effect of the exchange rate on the balance sheets, but also a negative effect could occur by distorting the balance sheets with high dollarized debts. This possibilty seems to be important for the Turkish economy where the real sector debts are highly dollarized. Moreover, it is expected that there may be a balance sheet effect, given that it is frequently affected by currency attacks. For this reason, this study analyzes the effect of exchange rate increases on Turkish manufacturing industry sub-sector investments on an annual basis in the 2009-2020 period, based on the literature on the balance sheet effect. According to the results obtained using the Generalized Method of Moments estimator, there is a significant balance sheet effect in the Turkish manufacturing industry sub-sectors but there is not a significant competivnes effect. On the other hand, the sector, which faces a cost inflation problem due to its high dependency on imported inputs, is negatively and significantly affected by inflation according to the results of the analysis.
