Microalgae are a substantial group of unicellular prokaryotic and eukaryotic marine organisms. Due to their high protein content of 50–70%, microalgae have the potential to become a sustainable alternative protein source, as well as aiding in the development of bioactive peptide-based nutraceuticals. A series of major steps are involved in the production of peptides from microalgae, which include the disruption of the microalgal cell wall, the hydrolysis of proteins, and the extraction or isolation of peptides derived from hydrolysis. Physical methods of cell wall disruptions are favored due to the ability to obtain high-quality protein fractions for peptide production. Bioactive peptides are protein fragments of two to twenty amino acid residues that have a beneficial impact on the physiological functions or conditions of human health. Strong scientific evidence exists for the in vitro antioxidant, antihypertensive, and anti-atherosclerotic properties of microalgal peptides. This review is aimed at summarizing the methods of producing microalgal peptides, and their role and mechanisms in improving cardiovascular health. The review reveals that the validation of the physiological benefits of the microalgal peptides in relation to cardiovascular disease, using human clinical trials, is required.

Abstract Using the flexibility and diversity of material and structure designs possible with 3D printing fiber technology, an all‐solid photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is fabricated using borate (B2O3) doping. The geometry, material, and optical properties of this 3D printed PCF are characterized and analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fiber index profilometry, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microscopy. Analysis demonstrates that B2O3 doped in fabricated PCF has experienced evaporation leading to mass loss during drawing. In addition, there is no observable difference between the structure of substrate silica (SiO2) and the SiO2 nanoparticles. However, microdomain differences may explain enhanced reflectance. Furthermore, a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensor is constructed with this 3D printed solid PCF and applied to temperature, refractive index, tensile force, and bending sensing. The specially designed 3D printed PCF has maximum temperature sensitivity up to Δλ/ΔT ≈0.075 nm °C−1. When immersed in 76.34 wt.% glycerol‐water solution, the sensitivity can be further improved. These results demonstrate that 3D printing fiber technology enables the custom fabrication of highly sensitive optical fiber sensors, increasing opportunities for the development of diverse and flexible sensors and devices for future internet‐of‐things (IoT) applications.

Abstract The microenvironment mediated by the microglia (MG) M1/M2 phenotypic switch plays a decisive role in the neuronal fate and cognitive function of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the impact of metabolic reprogramming on microglial polarization and its underlying mechanism remains elusive. This study reveals that cordycepin improved cognitive function and memory in APP/PS1 mice, as well as attenuated neuronal damage by triggering MG‐M2 polarization and metabolic reprogramming characterized by increased OXPHOS and glycolysis, rather than directly protecting neurons. Simultaneously, cordycepin partially alleviates mitochondrial damage in microglia induced by inhibitors of OXPHOS and glycolysis, further promoting MG‐M2 transformation and increasing neuronal survival. Through confirmation of cordycepin distribution in the microglial mitochondria via mitochondrial isolation followed by HPLC‐MS/MS techniques, HKII and PDK2 are further identified as potential targets of cordycepin. By investigating the effects of HKII and PDK2 inhibitors, the mechanism through which cordycepin targeted HKII to elevate ECAR levels in the glycolysis pathway while targeting PDK2 to enhance OCR levels in PDH‐mediated OXPHOS pathway, thereby inducing MG‐M2 polarization, promoting neuronal survival and exerting an anti‐AD role is elucidated.

Chylothorax is a serious postoperative complication of oesophageal cancer, and to date, there is no standardized and effective intraoperative diagnostic tool that can be used to identify the thoracic duct and determine the location of lymphatic fistulas. A 50-year-old patient with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma developed chylothorax after thoracolaparoscopy combined with radical resection of oesophageal cancer. Twelve hours after surgery, 1200 mL of clear fluid was drained from the thoracic drainage tube, and a chyle test was sent. A thoracothoracic duct ligation procedure was performed on the first day after surgery. Although fluid accumulating in the posterior mediastinum was observed, the location of the lymphatic fistula could not be determined. During the surgery, indocyanine green (ICG) was injected into the bilateral inguinal lymph nodes, and a fluorescent lens was used to determine the location of the lymphatic fistula so the surgeon could ligate the thoracic duct. ICG fluorescence imaging technology can help surgeons effectively manage chylothorax after oesophageal cancer surgery. To our knowledge, this is the first report to describe the use of ICG fluorescence imaging technology to treat postoperative chylothorax in patients with oesophageal cancer in China.

Objective: To explore the pharmacological mechanism of the effect of fraxetin in treating acute myeloid leukemia (AML) by the network pharmacology method combined with experimental validation. Methods: The targets of fraxetin were identified through Swisstarget prediction, PhammerMap, and CTDBASE. Disease-related targets of AML were explored using GeneCards and DisGenet databases, and the intersected targets were analyzed in the String website to construct a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Subsequently, gene ontology (GO) functional enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment were conducted using the DAVID database. Molecular docking of core proteins with drugs was performed using Auto Dock Vina software. Finally, the effect of fraxetin on AML was evaluated by in vitro experiments. The effect of fraxetin on AML cell proliferation was assessed by CCK8, the effect of fraxetin on AML cell apoptosis was assessed by flow cytometry, and the expression of relevant protein targets was detected by Western blotting to evaluate the anti-AML effect of fraxetin. Results: In this study, fraxetin exerts its effect against AML through 101 intersecting genes. The pathway enrichment analysis revealed that the pharmacological effects of fraxetin on AML were related to the Adenosine 5‘-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase （AMPK） signaling pathway, and the molecular docking results indicated that fraxetin had an excellent binding affinity to both the core target and AMPK. In vitro experiments have demonstrated that fraxetin inhibited the proliferation and induced apoptosis of THP1 and HL60 cells, and the western blotting results indicated that the p-AMPK of the fraxetin intervention group was significantly changed in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: Fraxetin may modulate the AMPK signal pathway by interactine with the core target, thereby potentially therapeutic effect on AML.

Abstract Background Although studies have indicated that extreme temperature is strongly associated with respiratory diseases, there is a dearth of studies focused on children, especially in China. We aimed to explore the association between extreme temperature and children’s outpatient visits for respiratory diseases and seasonal modification effects in Harbin, China. Methods A distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to explore the effect of extreme temperature on daily outpatient visits for respiratory diseases among children, as well as lag effects and seasonal modification effects. Results Extremely low temperatures were defined as the 1st percentile and 2.5th percentile of temperature. Extremely high temperatures were defined as the 97.5th percentile and 99th percentile of temperature. At extremely high temperatures, both 26 °C (97.5th) and 27 °C (99th) showed adverse effects at lag 0–6 days, with relative risks (RRs) of 1.34 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.21–1.48] and 1.38 (95% CI: 1.24–1.53), respectively. However, at extremely low temperatures, both − 26 °C (1st) and − 23 °C (2.5th) showed protective effects on children’s outpatient visits for respiratory diseases at lag 0–10 days, with RRs of 0.86 (95% CI: 0.76–0.97) and 0.85 (95% CI: 0.75–0.95), respectively. We also found seasonal modification effects, with the association being stronger in the warm season than in the cold season at extremely high temperatures. Conclusions Our study indicated that extremely hot temperatures increase the risk of children’s outpatient visits for respiratory diseases. Efforts to reduce the exposure of children to extremely high temperatures could potentially alleviate the burden of pediatric respiratory diseases, especially during the warm season.

The nonlinear Networked Control Systems (NCSs) analyzed in this study not only has packet loss, but also has induced-delay. For this kind of complex systems, this manuscript presents an effective scheme for addressing the Interval Type-2 (IT2) $H_{\infty } $ fuzzy control based on event-triggered mechanism. By applying this scheme, the system can mitigate the effects of packet loss and induced-delay while achieving $H_{\infty } $ performance. Specifically, this manuscript employs an IT2 fuzzy system for modeling the controlled plants, and introduces an event-triggered controller to ensure system stability. This approach aims to effectively manage the complexities introduced by packet loss and induced-delay in the control systems. Meanwhile, we adopt the Wirtinger inequality, slack matrices, and the free-weighting matrix to enhance the qualitative investigation of this proposed control system. In addition, the use of Lyapunov-Krasovskii Functional (LKF) enables derivation of steadiness analysis and facilitates achievement of $H_{\infty } $ performance in the control system. Moreover, the proposed event-triggered control approach is validated through the use of two examples, demonstrating its efficacy in practical scenarios. Additionally, the manuscript highlights the advantages and strengths of the developed design, showcasing its effectiveness in addressing the challenges posed by packet loss and induced-delay in NCSs.

Aluminium extrusion profiles are widely utilised due to their potential to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs. In this paper, two advanced tool designs for a novel sideways extrusion technique, the Unified design and the Guided design, were proposed. These designs facilitate the production of three-dimensional curved profiles with marked asymmetry and large-scale cross-sections. Numerical simulations of the initial designs revealed considerable variations in bending shapes compared to the target profile. Employing the Taguchi method combined with grey relational analysis, the study identified that the extrudate's bending shape are influenced by the die orifice position and the speed ratio of two rams with different sensitivities. Following this, optimal designs were derived for both design types. For the particular profile in this study, the simulation results showed that the optimal Unified design permitted better welding quality and lower extrusion force. However, the optimal Guided design achieved a bending shape more aligned with the target shape. It can also provide enhanced stability in the extrusion system and higher production yield compared to the optimal Unified design.

Abstract Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder causing progressive dementia. Research suggests that microRNAs (miRNAs) could serve as biomarkers and therapeutic targets for AD. Reduced levels of miR‐137 have been observed in the brains of AD patients, but its specific role and downstream mechanisms remain unclear. This study sought to examine the therapeutic potential of miR‐137‐5p agomir in alleviating cognitive dysfunction induced in AD models and explore its potential mechanisms. Methods This study utilized bioinformatic analysis and a dual‐luciferase reporter assay to investigate the relationship between miR‐137‐5p and ubiquitin‐specific peptidase 30 (USP30). In vitro experiments were conducted using SH‐SY5Y cells to assess the impact of miR‐137‐5p on Aβ1–42 neurotoxicity. In vivo experiments on AD mice evaluated the effects of miR‐137‐5p on cognition, Aβ1–42 deposition, Tau hyperphosphorylation, and neuronal apoptosis, as well as its influence on USP30 levels. Results It was discovered that miR‐137‐5p mimics efficiently counteract Aβ1–42 neurotoxicity in SH‐SY5Y cells, a protective effect that is negated by USP30 overexpression. In vivo experiments demonstrated that miR‐137‐5p enhances the cognition and mobility of AD mice, significantly reducing Aβ1–42 deposition, Tau hyperphosphorylation, and neuronal apoptosis within the hippocampus and cortex regions. Mechanistically, miR‐137‐5p significantly suppresses USP30 levels in mice, though USP30 overexpression partially buffers against miR‐137‐5p‐induced AD symptom improvement. Conclusion Our study proposes that miR‐137‐5p, by instigating the downregulation of USP30, has the potential to act as a novel and promising therapeutic target for AD.

Abstract Recently, radiotherapy (RT) has entered a new realm of precision cancer therapy with the introduction of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging guided radiotherapy systems into the clinic. Nonetheless, identifying an optimized radiotherapy time window (ORTW) is still critical for the best therapeutic efficacy of RT. Here we describe pH and O2 dual-sensitive, perfluorooctylbromide (PFOB)-based and glycerol-weighted chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) nano-molecular imaging probes (Gly-PFOBs) with dual fluorine and hydrogen proton based CEST MR imaging properties (19F/1H-CEST). Oxygenated Gly-PFOBs ameliorate tumor hypoxia and improve O2-dependent radiotherapy. Moreover, the pH and O2 dual-sensitive properties of Gly-PFOBs could be quantitatively, spatially, and temporally monitored by 19F/1H-CEST imaging to optimize ORTW. In this study, we describe the CEST signal characteristics exhibited by the glycerol components of Gly-PFOBs. The pH and O2 dual-sensitive Gly-PFOBs with19F/1H-CEST MR dual-modality imaging properties, with superior therapeutic efficacy and biosafety, are employed for sensitive imaging-guided lung cancer RT, illustrating the potential of multi-functional imaging to noninvasively monitor and enhance RT-integrated effectiveness.

Photosensitive resins (PSR) were exposed to challenging operational conditions in different technological domains. It is desirable to enhance the mechanical durability of PSR for its usage in real-world applications. We use TiO2 to improve the mechanical strength and durability of PSR and comprehend nanoparticles' impact on PSR's durability. Herein, we compare the mechanical properties of photosensitive resins (PSR) and TiO2-based polymer nanocomposites (T@PNCs) with varying nanoparticle sizes [1 μm and 20 nm]. Firstly, the ultrasonic dual mixing (UDM) technique is employed, which involves the simultaneous use of ultrasonic mixing and stirring to produce nanocomposites of T@PNCs slurry. Before printing, the initial designs were created using solidworks software, and 3D-Printing was performed using a 3D Moon Ray Printer. Rod and flat specimens were printed, and their structural and mechanical strength were analyzed. The experimental results suggest that larger nanoparticles, measuring 1 μm, decrease the mechanical durability of T@PNCs. However, reducing the size of nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) to 20 nm increases mechanical resilience, leading to improved flexural and tensile strength. Our experimental results demonstrate that the nanoparticles' size strongly influences PSR's mechanical properties.

Joints formed by inserting steel secondary beam (SSB) into concrete girders have been increasingly used in engineering practice (e.g., electric power). To demonstrate the static performance of these joints, two key variables including the construction method (prefabricated, cast-in-place) and the insertion form of SSB (unilateral, bilateral) were considered. The test results indicated that the failure mode of each joint was concrete punching by the inserted SSB. Compared with the joint specimens with unilateral insertion of SSB, the failure mode of the joint with bilateral insertion was changed from multiple to single cracking, exhibiting more obvious brittleness. When high-performance cement-based grouting materials were incorporated into the joint, the assembly and ductility of the joint were effectively improved. Compared with the cast-in-place counterparts, the displacement ductility coefficients of joints with prefabricated unilaterally and bilaterally inserted beams were enhanced by 22.9% and 41.3%, respectively. Moreover, a theoretical model was developed to evaluate the punching shear resistance of such joints with favorable accuracy.

Abstract Background Intrinsic capacity (IC) is a comprehensive indicator of an individual’s positive attributes. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a two-step approach to assess IC decline among older people. The first step involves the used of the integrated care for older people (ICOPE) screening tool to identify potential issues, and the second step involves using detailed assessments for confirmation. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of the ICOPE screening tool as a simple preliminary screening to identify IC decline among community-dwelling older people, which has been rarely reported in China. Methods This cross-sectional study included 228 community-dwelling older individuals aged ≥ 75 (mean age, 84.0 ± 4.4 years; 131 [57.5%] females) who completed the IC evaluation according to the WHO IC assessment pathway. The diagnostic performance of the ICOPE screening tool was calculated using a 2 × 2 table and a receiver operating characteristic curve. Results The proportion of possible IC decline identified by the ICOPE screening tool was 79.4%, whereas the actual IC decline assessed by the detailed assessment was 73.2%, mainly in locomotion. The ICOPE screening tool showed sensitivity and specificity of 94.6% and 62.3%, respectively, with an overall diagnostic accuracy of 86.0%. The diagnostic effectiveness of the ICOPE screening tool was 0.91 (95% confidence interval: 0.87–0.95, p = 0.020). Except for the sensory dimension, the sensitivity of the ICOPE screening tool for diagnosing impairments in each dimension of the IC was the highest in the cognition domain (100%) and the lowest in the vitality domain (51.3%), whereas the specificity was the highest in vitality (94.7%) and the lowest in cognition (55.6%). Conclusions The ICOPE screening tool exhibits high sensitivity and can be used as an IC screening tool in community-dwelling older people. However, further improvements are needed in the vitality dimension of the ICOPE screening tool to enhance its sensitivity in identifying individuals at risk of malnutrition.

Objective To form the sampling data interval by retrospectively analyzing the sampling data of quality monitoring of fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitates and leukocyte-free platelets in all blood stations in Hebei Province during the past 7 years. Methods The data of blood component sampling from 12 blood station quality control laboratories in Hebei from 2015 to 2021 were collected. The FⅧ content and plasma protein content of fresh frozen plasma, the FⅧ content and fibrinogen content of cryoprecipitates, and the leukocyte residuals, red blood cell mixed and platelet content of leukocyte-free platelets were taken as the objects for discrete point and fitted curve analysis. Results The FⅧ level of fresh frozen plasma: (1.36±1.1) IU/mL, 5 blood stations showed a representative overall high or low or fluctuated characteristics; Fresh frozen plasm-plasma protein items: overall mean ±SD: (61.13±16.7) g/L, four blood stations showed scattered distribution or continuous high value scattered points; Cryoprecipitates FⅧ: the overall mean ±SD: (134.25±58.7) IU/mL, four blood stations showed the differentiation characteristics of continuous high, low or stable in the middle; Cryoprecipitates-fibrinogen items: the overall mean ±SD: (215.27±83.5) mg, five blood stations showed the overall high or low and fluctuated. Leukocyte-free apheresis platelet-to-leukocyte residual items: overall mean ±SD: 0.37±0.96 (×106/bag), two blood stations showed a relatively high representative overall characteristics, and the rest were concentrated between 0 and 1; The total mean ±SD of platelet-to-red blood cell mixture without leukocyte was 2.45±2.82 (×109/bag), with obvious segmented concentrated distribution, and scattered distribution in 3 blood centers. Platelet content: the overall mean ±SD was 3.14±1.55 (×1011/bag), many deviations were noticed in 3 blood stations, and 1 blood station showed representative overall high characteristics. Conclusion This analysis shows that the distribution status of each blood station in different items is similar. The distribution status of discrete point groups and the change trend of the concentrated part of the fitting curve show that there are some differences in the monitoring level between the quality control laboratories of each blood station, and the update of detection instruments and reagents and the selection of detection methods greatly affect the test results. The summary data presented the index interval framework formed in the past 7 years, which helped to understand the difference between the results of each laboratory, correct the accuracy of the test results, better play the guiding role of quality monitoring in the blood preparation process, and continue to enhance the standardization of the whole process of blood collection and supply in the province.

BackgroundPrevious observational studies have demonstrated a correlation between metabolic syndrome related diseases and an elevated susceptibility to ulcers of lower limb. It has been suggested that this causal relationship may be influenced by the presence of peripheral artery disease (PAD). Nevertheless, the precise contribution of these factors as determinants of ulcers of lower limb remains largely unexplored.MethodThis research incorporated information on hypertension, BMI, hyperuricemia, type 2 diabetes, PAD, and ulcers of lower limb sourced from the GWAS database. Univariate Mendelian randomization (SVMR) and multivariate Mendelian randomization (MVMR) methods were employed to assess the association between metabolic syndrome related diseases, including hypertension, obesity, hyperuricemia, and type 2 diabetes, as well as to investigate whether this association was influenced by PAD.ResultsUnivariate Mendelian randomization analysis showed that genetically predicted hypertension, BMI, and type 2 diabetes were associated with an increased risk of PAD and ulcers of lower limb, and PAD was associated with an increased risk of ulcers of lower limb, but there is no causal relationship between hyperuricemia and ulcers of lower limb. The results of multivariate Mendelian randomization showed that PAD mediated the causal relationship between hypertension, obesity and ulcers of lower limb, but the relationship between type 2 diabetes and ulcers of lower limb was not mediated by PAD.ConclusionHypertension, BMI and type 2 diabetes can increase the risk of ulcers of lower limb, and PAD can be used as a mediator of hypertension and obesity leading to ulcers of lower limb, These findings may inform prevention and intervention strategies directed toward metabolic syndrome and ulcers of lower limb.

A convenient method for producing three-dimensional photonic lattice microstructures was experimentally demonstrated by using a cutting-combination lens. Three-dimensional photonic lattices are optically induced by (4 + 1) plane waves interference in an iron-doped lithium niobate photorefractive crystal. Induced three-dimensional lattice microstructures are observed and verified by planar guided wave intensity imaging and far-field diffraction pattern. This method is inexpensive and does not require complex adjustment devices. In addition, it also has flexibility and scalability. This method can be used to fabricate other more complex three-dimensional photonic lattice microstructures by designing the cutting-combination lens appropriately.

ABSTRACTThe continued evolution and emergence of novel influenza viruses in wild and domestic animals poses an increasing public health risk. Two human cases of H3N8 avian influenza virus infection in China in 2022 have caused public concern regarding the risk of transmission between birds and humans. However, the prevalence of H3N8 avian influenza viruses in their natural reservoirs and their biological characteristics are largely unknown. To elucidate the potential threat of H3N8 viruses, we analyzed five years of surveillance data obtained from an important wetland region in eastern China and evaluated the evolutionary and biological characteristics of 21 H3N8 viruses isolated from 15,899 migratory bird samples between 2017 and 2021. Genetic and phylogenetic analyses showed that the H3N8 viruses circulating in migratory birds and ducks have evolved into different branches and have undergone complicated reassortment with viruses in waterfowl. The 21 viruses belonged to 12 genotypes, and some strains induced body weight loss and pneumonia in mice. All the tested H3N8 viruses preferentially bind to avian-type receptors, although they have acquired the ability to bind human-type receptors. Infection studies in ducks, chickens and pigeons demonstrated that the currently circulating H3N8 viruses in migratory birds have a high possibility of infecting domestic waterfowl and a low possibility of infecting chickens and pigeons. Our findings imply that circulating H3N8 viruses in migratory birds continue to evolve and pose a high infection risk in domestic ducks. These results further emphasize the importance of avian influenza surveillance at the wild bird and poultry interface.

This study was aimed at preparing chitosan (CS)-phenolic acids copolymers to obtain better preservation effect in marine products. In this work, CS was grafted onto phenolic acids such as gallic acid (GA) and protocatechuic acid (PA) by a carbodiimide coupling method. The copolymers (CS-grafted-GA (CS-g-GA) and CS-grafted-PA (CS-g-PA)) were further confirmed through physicochemical properties including ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotography, fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogram, rheological behaviour, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and antioxidant activity analysis. Subsequently, the effects of copolymers on preservation of refrigerated sea bass (Lateolabrax japonicus) fillets were investigated. The results showed that the CS-g-GA (110.82 mg GA/g) exhibited higher grafting rate than CS-g-PA (62.63 mg PA/g). According to the assessment of UV–Vis and FTIR spectrometry, both the GA and PA were grafted onto CS successfully. SEM analysis demonstrated that the microstructure of copolymers became irregular. Meanwhile, both the CS-g-GA and CS-g-PA copolymers displayed superior thermal stability, rheological properties and antioxidant capacity than the pure CS. Furthermore, the copolymers also revealed a significantly stronger preservation effect on sea bass fillets including inhibiting microbial growth and delaying the deterioration of color, texture and sensory quality. Therefore, CS-g-GA and CS-g-PA could be used as promising preservatives for seafood.

Aluminosilicates, abundant and crucial in both natural environments and industry, often involve uncontrollable chemical components when derived from minerals, making further chemical purification and reaction more complicated. This study utilizes pure alumina and fumed silica powders as more controllable sources, enhancing aluminosilicate reactivity through room temperature (non-firing) processing and providing a robust framework that resists mechanical stress and high temperature. By embedding iron-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOF/non-firing aluminosilicate membranes) within the above matrix, these ceramic membranes not only preserve their mechanical robustness but also gain significant chemical functionality, enhancing their capacity to removing phytochromes from the vegetables. Sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate were selected as activators to successfully prepare high-strength, non-firing aluminosilicate membranes. These membranes demonstrated a flexural strength of 8.7 MPa under wet-culture conditions with a molar ratio of Al2O3:SiO2:NaOH:Na2SiO3 at 1:1:0.49:0.16. The chlorophyll adsorption of spinach conducted on these membranes showed a removal rate exceeding 90% at room temperature and pH = 9, highlighting its potential for the selective adsorption of chlorophyll. This study underscores the potential of MOF-enhanced aluminosilicate ceramic membranes in environmental applications, particularly for agricultural pollution control.

SiBCN ceramics based on SiC, BN and Si3N4 structures have good comprehensive properties such as high-temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, creep resistance and long life, which makes it one of the very promising ceramic material systems in military and aerospace fields, etc. In this study, SiBCN ceramics, as well as Si3N4f/BN/SiBCN microcomposites, were prepared by a polymer infiltration pyrolysis method using PBSZ as the polymer precursor. The PBSZ was completely ceramized by pyrolysis at 900 °C. The weight loss and elemental bonding forms of the products after the pyrolysis of the precursors hardly changed from 600 °C to 900 °C. After pyrolysis at 600 °C for 4 h and using the BN coating obtained from twice deposition as the interfacial phase, a more desirable weak interface of fiber/matrix with a binding strength of 21.96 ± 2.01 MPa can be obtained. Si3N4f/BN/SiBCN ceramic matrix microcomposites prepared under the same pyrolysis conditions have a relatively good tensile strength of 111.10 MPa while retaining a weak interface between the fibers and the matrix. The results of the study provide more theoretical and methodological support for the application of new composite structural ceramic material systems.

With the continuous development of green energy, society is increasingly demanding advanced energy storage devices. Manganese-based asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) can deliver high energy density while possessing high power density. However, the structural instability hampers the wider application of manganese dioxide in ASCs. A novel MnO2-based electrode material was designed in this study. We synthesized a MnO2/carbon cloth electrode, CC@NMO, with NH4+ ion pre-intercalation through a one-step hydrothermal method. The pre-intercalation of NH4+ stabilizes the MnO2 interlayer structure, expanding the electrode stable working potential window to 0–1.1 V and achieving a remarkable mass specific capacitance of 181.4 F g−1. Furthermore, the ASC device fabricated using the CC@NMO electrode and activated carbon electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties. The CC@NMO//AC achieves a high energy density of 63.49 Wh kg−1 and a power density of 949.8 W kg−1. Even after cycling 10,000 times at 10 A g−1, the device retains 81.2% of its capacitance. This work sheds new light on manganese dioxide-based asymmetric supercapacitors and represents a significant contribution for future research on them.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a common hematopoietic malignancy, and platelet transfusion plays a crucial role in its treatment. This study aimed to investigate the changes in inflammatory response and autophagy during the preservation of apheresis platelets (AP) and their correlation with platelet transfusion refractoriness (PTR) in ALL. ALL patients were included, and APs were categorized based on the preservation period (day 0, day 1, days 2-3, and days 4-5). The activation factors procaspase-activating compound 1 (PAC-1) and P-selectin (CD62P), AP aggregation function, inflammation levels (interleukin 1 beta [IL-1β], interleukin 6 [IL-6], tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α] and NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 [NLRP3]), and autophagy-related genes (p62) during AP preservation were assessed. Following co-culturing APs with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), specific activation markers were studied to observe APs influence on immune cells activation. The effectiveness of platelet transfusion was assessed, and risk factors for PTR were analyzed. As the storage duration of AP increased, the activation factors, coagulation factor activity, inflammation levels, and the activation of immune cells in AP increased, while fibrinogen levels and AP aggregation function decreased. The expression levels of autophagy-related genes (the autophagy marker light chain 3B gene [LC3B] and Beclin 1 gene) decreased with prolongation preservation. The effective rate of AP transfusion in ALL patients was 68.21%. AP preservation time, IL-6, p62, and Beclin 1 were identified as independent risk factors affecting PTR in ALL patients. In conclusion, during AP preservation, inflammation, autophagy, and activation of immune cells were observed to increase. AP preservation time, IL-6, p62, and Beclin 1 were independent risk factors for PTR.

Droughts have an adverse influence on agriculture, the environment, water supplies, and the global economy. The drought risk was computed using an integrated prospective approach: drought hazard, exposure, and vulnerability based on biophysical and socio-economic conditions over Karachi, Pakistan during 2000–2019. Drought hazard map (DHM) was created using annual Palmer drought severity Index (PDSI). Drought exposure map (DEM) was derived using population density and gross domestic product (GDP), as well as land surface temperature (LST), Normal difference vegetation index (NDVI), Night light images (NTL), land use land cover (LULC), and Distance to water were used for drought vulnerability map (DVM). An estimation of drought Risk (EDR) was derived by integrating layers of DHM, DEM, and DVM. Results showed that Central, South, and East regions of Karachi were at high risk, whereas the North East and North were less affected by the drought. The estimated average drought hazard (EDH) was 0.84, with minimum (maximum) value of 0.68 (1). Similarly, the average estimated drought exposure (estimated drought vulnerability) for EDE (EDV) was 0.27 (0.42), with the maximum value of 0.55 (0.84) and the minimum value of 0 (0). The drought risk assessment map (DRAM) shows that the average risk values is 0.18 while highest value is 0.36.

The detection rate of Klebsiella pneumoniae in food is increasing, and it has emerged as a food pathogen. Global health is threatened due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and hypervirulent (hv) K. pneumoniae. Phages have a promising application as antibacterial agents and have the ability to lyse MDR strains. Hence, phage vB_KpP_HS106 against MDR-hv K. pneumoniae strains was isolated from sewage collected from a hospital. It can maintain stable activity at a pH range of 4–12 and a temperature range of 4°C to 50°C. The maximum adsorption rate of phage HS106 was found to be approximately 84.2% at 6 min. One-step growth curve analysis showed that the latent period of HS106 was 10 min and the burst size was approximately 183 PFU/cell. Furthermore, whole genome analysis indicated that the genome of phage HS106 was a double-stranded linear 76,430-bp long DNA molecule with 44% GC content. A total of 95 open reading frames were annotated in the HS106 genome, which did not contain any virulence genes or antibiotic resistance genes. Phage HS106 reduced MDR K. pneumoniae in milk by approximately 1.6 log10 CFU/mL at 25°C and in chicken by approximately 2 log10 CFU/cm3 at 25°C. Therefore, vB_KpP_HS106 is a promising alternative to antibiotics for biocontrol against multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae in foods.

Optical 3D detection technology has a wide range of applications in industrial detection, agricultural production, and so on. Its advantages are non-contact, efficiency, and high precision. However, the specular reflection problem affects model coverage and measurement accuracy. An optimization algorithm for calculating the number and pose of sensors has been proposed to address this issue. First, the specular reflection problem is viewed as a multi-sensor position search problem. Then, an optimization algorithm is used to find the optimal number and bit positions of sensors to avoid specular reflection. The experiment shows that the optimization results of this algorithm can cover the area to be measured with the least number of sensor combinations while avoiding the influence of specular reflection.

Taking into consideration the inaccurate temperature predictions in traditional thermal models of power devices, we undertook a study on the temperature rise characteristics of heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) with a two-dimensional cross-sectional structure including a sub-collector region. We developed a current-adjusted polynomial electro-thermal coupling model based on investigating floating heat sources. This model was developed using precise simulation data acquired from SILVACO (Santa Clara, CA, USA). Additionally, we utilized COMSOL software (version 5.6) to simulate the temperature distribution within parallel power cells, examining further impacts resulting from thermal coupling. The research findings indicate that the rise in current induces modifications in the local carrier concentration, thereby prompting variations in the local electric field, including changes in the heat source’s peak location and intensity. The device’s peak temperature exhibits a non-linear trend regulated by the current, revealing an error margin of less than 1.5% in the proposed current-corrected model. At higher current levels, the drift of the heat source leads to an increase in the heat dissipation path and reduces the coupling strength between parallel devices. Experiments were performed on 64 GaAs (gallium arsenide) HBT-based power cells using a QFI infrared imaging system. Compared to the traditional temperature calculation model, the proposed model increased the accuracy by 6.84%, allowing for more precise predictions of transistor peak temperatures in high-power applications.

In this study, polysaccharides from Lentinus edodes, Auricularia auricula and the waste from the corners of Dictyophora rubrovolvata were extracted by water extraction and alcohol precipitation, and separated and purified by Sevag reagent and dialysis. The molecular weight, functional groups, glycosidic bond and three helix structure of three edible fungi polysaccharides were analyzed by ultraviolet spectrophotometer, high performance gel permeation chromatography (HPGPC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and Congo red experiment. The antioxidant capacity of polysaccharides from three edible fungi was evaluated by scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitrophenylhydrazine free radical (DPPH·) and hydroxyl free radicals (OH·) and the total reducing power of Fe3+, and the basic structure and antioxidant activity of the three edible fungi were compared and analyzed. The results showed that the three edible fungus polysaccharides had good homogeneity, and the molecular weight distribution was in the order of tens of thousands and millions. The three edible fungus polysaccharides contained similar functional groups, which were the acidic polysaccharides with configuration both α and β, and all of them had triple helix structure. In addition, the three edible fungus polysaccharides had good antioxidant activity in the range of experimental concentration. When the concentration was 1.0 and 3.0 mg/mL, the DPPH and OH radical scavenging ability of Dictyophora rubrovolvata polysaccharide was better than that of Lentinus edodes and Auricularia auricula polysaccharide, up to 66.86% and 35.69%, their IC50 value were 0.010 and 0.195 mg/mL. In conclusion, there was no significant difference in the basic structure of polysaccharides from the three kinds of edible fungi, but there was a great difference in antioxidant activities, which laid a foundation for industrial production of extracting edible fungi polysaccharides from the waste of Dictyophora rubrovolvata.

The obstruction of post-insulin receptor signaling is the main mechanism of insulin-resistant diabetes. Progestin and adipoQ receptor 3 (PAQR3), a key regulator of inflammation and metabolism, can negatively regulate the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Here, we report that gentiopicroside (GPS), the main bioactive secoiridoid glycoside of Gentiana manshurica Kitagawa, decreased lipid synthesis and increased glucose utilization in palmitic acid (PA) treated HepG2 cells. Additionally, GPS improved glycolipid metabolism in streptozotocin (STZ) treated high-fat diet (HFD)-induced diabetic mice. Our findings revealed that GPS promoted the activation of the PI3K/AKT axis by facilitating DNA-binding protein 2 (DDB2)-mediated PAQR3 ubiquitinated degradation. Moreover, results of surface plasmon resonance (SPR), microscale thermophoresis (MST) and thermal shift assay (TSA) indicated that GPS directly binds to PAQR3. Results of molecular docking and cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA) revealed that GPS directly bound to the amino acids of the PAQR3 NH2-terminus including Leu40, Asp42, Glu69, Tyr125 and Ser129, and spatially inhibited the interaction between PAQR3 and the PI3K catalytic subunit (P110α) to restore the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. In summary, our study identified GPS, which inhibits PAQR3 expression and directly targets PAQR3 to restore insulin signaling pathway, as a potential drug candidate for the treatment of diabetes.

The mullet Liza haematocheila is widely distributed in low-salinity waters around the world and has high economic value. However, details regarding the foraging ecology of mullet larvae remain unclear. Larvae of L. haematocheila were sampled in Laizhou Bay of the Bohai Sea, China, in May 2016, and diet composition was detected using gut content analysis to compare differences in feeding parameters and diet shift in dominant prey during ontogeny. The results showed no linear relationship between gape size (GS) and standard length (SL) at larva length 7 mm (post-flexion larvae, PFL). Maximum prey size (MPS) overlapped with GS during the FL stage but was never higher than GS during the PFL stage. Trends of increasing MPS and prey size range (PSR) during the PFL stage were lower than those during the FL stage, but prey number (PN) increased significantly during the PFL stage. Diet composition analyses in mullet larvae showed a total of 10 mesozooplankton species (or categories), of which 8 species were copepods (including copepods nauplii and copepodites), and showed the dominance of 4 small copepods (

Objective To investigate the status quo and existing problems of quality control laboratory of blood stations in Hebei province, and to provide reference for the capacity building of quality control laboratory in the future. Methods The data of routine blood collection and supply, blood component preparation, blood sampling ratio/frequency, and sampling results among 12 blood stations in Hebei in 2020 were collected. The monitoring effect of blood component quality in Hebei province, combined with the indicator changes of main blood components, were analyzed. Results Blood component preparation from blood stations in Hebei are different. The requirements for the number and frequency of routine sampling in each apartment are not standardized, and retrospective analysis was not conducted basically. Although the frequency and sampling of blood component quality monitoring can meet the minimum requirements of the Quality Monitoring Guidelines of Whole Blood and Blood Components 2017 and Technical Operating Regulations of Blood Stations (2019 Edition), but does not match the actual collection and preparation units. The qualification rate and reliability are unstable due to the small sample size. Monthly quality inspection can result in judgment errors, which is not conducive to systematic analysis and continuous improvement of blood collection and supply process. Conclusion In the context of continuous enhancement of blood collection and supply standardization in Hebei Province, the blood quality monitoring mechanism based on intra-province consistency can be further studied to standardize intra-province homogenization of blood quality monitoring in multiple links including sampling rules, statistical analysis and data comparison calibers.

The feeding relationship between copepods and phytoplankton has immense ecological significance. This study investigated the feeding behavior of copepods by studying the feeding selectivity of Paracalanus parvus, a key small copepod species, using a high-speed camera. The feeding behavior of P. parvus separately fed on three algae, Prorocentrum minimum, Alexandrium minutum, and Thalassiosira weissflogii, was studied at five different concentrations. The factors characterizing feeding behavior, including the beating frequency (BF), beating time (BT), and rejection behavior, were analyzed. The average BT and BF of P. parvus fed on toxic algae were significantly lower than those of copepods fed on nontoxic algae, indicating that the toxic algae negatively affected their feeding behavior. There were no significant differences in feed rejection among the three algae during the short period of experimentation, indicating that the rejection behavior was insignificant in the early period (within 20 min) of feeding on toxic algae. The feeding behavior was inhibited when the concentration reached 250 cells/mL. The BT was initially affected at increasing concentrations followed by the BF, and P. minimum and A. minutum reduced the BF at concentrations of 250 and 1000 cells/mL, respectively. Analysis of the average BFs revealed that P. parvus was more significantly affected by P. minimum containing diarrheal shellfish poison than by A. minutum containing paralytic shellfish poison. The BF of copepods fed on P. minimum was significantly lower than that of copepods fed on A. minutum at 250–500 cells/mL but was not significantly different from that at 1000 cells/mL. This indicated that the inhibitory effect of P. minimum on the feeding behavior was more significant at concentrations observed at the onset of red tide blooms (0.25–0.5 × 102 cells/mL), but insignificant at concentrations reaching those in advanced red tides (>103 cells/mL). This study demonstrates that toxic dinoflagellates alter the feeding behavior of copepods and describes the variations in their feeding response to different algal species and concentrations. The findings provide crucial insights for further studies on the feeding relationship between copepods and phytoplankton and on functional assessment of plankton ecosystems.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) has the advantages of utilizing complex substrates and producing renewable energy and is currently one of the mainstream technologies for food waste (FW) resourcing. However, at high organic loads and low inoculum-to-substrate ratios (ISRs), AD with FW as substrate is prone to acid accumulation, resulting in a drastic decrease in gas production and system collapse. This study investigated the effect of the coupled addition of zero-valent iron (ZVI) and activated carbon (AC) on the AD of FW at three low ISRs of 0.715, 0.625, and 0.5. The results showed that the control group acidified and stopped producing biogas when the ISR decreased to 0.625 and 0.5, but ZVI coupled with AC alleviated the acidification and increased the cumulative biogas yield. Especially at ISR = 0.5, the cumulative biogas yield for the ZVI + AC group was 31.5%, 99.5%, and 11.43 times higher than that of the ZVI, AC, and control groups, respectively. ZVI coupled with AC also increased the degradation of volatile fatty acids (70.5–84.4%) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (50.0–72.9%) while decreasing propionate concentration and improving the stability of the AD system. COD mass balance analyses indicated that the coupled addition of ZVI and AC promoted the conversion of particulate organic matter to soluble organic matter and increased the conversion of carbon sources to methane.

Objective. We aim to evaluate the impact of diabetes management shared care clinic (DMSCC) on glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) compliance and self-management abilities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods. This study was a prospective cohort study of patients with T2DM participating in the DMSCC. At baseline and after management, the HbA1c levels were measured, the HbA1c compliance rate were calculated, and the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities-6 (SDSCA-6), Diabetes Empowerment Scale-DAWN Short Form (DES-DSF), and Problem Areas in Diabetes Scale—Five-item Short Form (PAID-5) were completed. Nephropathy injury is a prevalent complication observed in individuals with diabetes, serving as a prominent contributor to end-stage renal disease, and the advanced glycation products (AGEs) are important factors that induce kidney injury in patients with diabetes. Addressing this condition remains a challenging aspect in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NKK20 strain (NKK20) which protects against diabetic kidney disease (DKD) based on animal and cell models. The results showed that the NKK20 can significantly reduce renal inflammatory response, serum oxidative stress response, and AGE concentration in diabetic mice. After treatment with NKK20, the kidney damage of diabetic mice was significantly improved, and more importantly, the concentration of butyrate, a specific anti-inflammatory metabolite of intestinal flora in the stool of diabetic mice, was significantly increased. In addition, nontargeted metabolomics analysis showed a significant difference between the metabolites in the mouse serum contents of the NKK20 administration group and those in the nephropathy injury group, in which a total of 24 different metabolites that were significantly affected by NKK20 were observed, and these metabolites were mainly involved in glycerophospholipid metabolism and arachidonic acid metabolism. Also, the administration of butyrate to human kidney- (HK-) 2 cells that were stimulated by AGEs resulted in a significant upregulation of ZO-1, Occludin, and E-cadherin gene expressions and downregulation of α-SMA gene expression. This means that butyrate can maintain the tight junction structure of HK-2 cells and inhibit fibrosis. Butyrate also significantly inhibited the activation of PI3K/Akt pathway. These results indicate that NKK20 can treat kidney injury in diabetic mice by reducing blood glucose and AGE concentration and increasing butyrate production in the intestine. By inhibiting PI3K pathway activation in HK-2 cells, butyrate maintains a tight junction structure of renal tubule epithelial cells and inhibits renal tissue fibrosis. These results suggest that NKK20 is helpful to prevent and treat the occurrence and aggravation of diabetic kidney injury.

In recent years, the global incidence of liver damage has increased. Despite the many known health benefits of red-fleshed apple flavonoids, their potential liver-protective effects have not yet been investigated. In this study, we analyzed the composition of red-fleshed apple flavonoid extract (RAFE) by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). We then induced liver damage in mice with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and performed interventions with RAFE to analyze its effect on liver damage, using bifendate as a positive control. The results showed that catechin was the most abundant flavonoid in ‘XJ4’ RAFE (49.346 mg/100 g). In liver-injured mice, the liver coefficients converged to normal levels following RAFE intervention. Moreover, RAFE significantly reduced the enzymatic activity levels of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (ALT), glutamic alanine transaminase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in mouse serum. Furthermore, RAFE significantly increased the content or enzyme activity level of total glutathione, total antioxidant capacity, and superoxide dismutase, and significantly decreased the content of malondialdehyde in the liver of mice. In parallel, we performed histopathological observations of mouse livers for each group. The results showed that RAFE restored the pathological changes caused by CCl4 around the central hepatic vein in mice and resulted in tightly bound hepatocytes. The recovery effect of RAFE was dose-dependent in the liver tissue. Regarding intestinal microorganisms, we found that RAFE restored the microbial diversity in liver-injured mice, with a similar microbial composition in the RAFE intervention group and normal group. RAFE reduced the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes, increased the levels of probiotic bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Clostridium, and reduced the levels of harmful bacteria, such as Erysipelothrix Rosenbach. Therefore, RAFE ameliorated CCl4-induced liver damage by modulating the abundance and composition of intestinal microorganisms in mice. In conclusion, RAFE alleviated CCl4-induced liver damage in mice, with H-RAFE (5 mg kg–1) significantly improving liver damage in mice but M-RAFE (1 mg kg–1) significantly improving the imbalance of intestinal microorganisms in mice. Our research suggests that RAFE could be employed for the adjuvant treatment and prevention of liver damage, and may have important applications in food and medicine.

Animal manure is an important raw material for Agaricus bisporus production; however, it is also a reservoir for antibiotic residues, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Little is known about the influence of the commercial cultivation of A. bisporus on the dynamics of ARGs and the underlying mechanisms that cause their variations. In this study, we investigated the fate of 285 ARGs, 10 mobile genetic elements, and seven major categories of antibiotic residues in substrate and mushroom samples at different production phases. The results showed that commercial substrate preparation, particularly the pasteurization phase, was highly efficient in removing ARGs from the substrate. We further found that mycelium proliferation of A. bisporus contributed significantly to the removal of ARGs from the substrate and casing soil. The bacterial community is the key driver of changes in ARGs during the commercial cultivation of A. bisporus, which explained 46.67% of the variation in ARGs. Our results indicate that, despite the addition of animal manure, the risk of ARG dissemination to fruiting bodies and the environment is low. We propose that bioremediation by specific edible fungi might be a novel and promising method for scavenging antimicrobial resistance contamination from soil environment.

ABSTRACT H16 avian influenza viruses mainly circulate in wild migratory gulls worldwide, and the infection risks in poultry and mammals remain largely unknown. In this study, we isolated a novel H16N3 virus from migratory gulls in eastern China in 2021. Genetic analysis indicated that the H16N3 virus originated from the H16 and H13 viruses that circulated in wild birds. This H16N3 virus has not adapted to replicate in chickens, ducks, or mice, although it can be transmitted between inoculated and contacted birds. The circulation of H16Nx viruses in the Northern Hemisphere indicates that we should strengthen active surveillance to monitor their prevalence and evolution in migratory gulls and their introduction into other migratory and domestic waterfowl. IMPORTANCE Migratory wild birds are natural reservoirs of H16 viruses and play a key role in the global prevalence of these viruses. Here, we found that H16 viruses predominantly circulate in migratory gulls and that the gull H16N3 virus cannot replicate efficiently in chickens, ducks, or mice without prior adaptation. These findings contribute to our understanding of the ecology, evolution, and biological properties of H16 viruses and will guide avian influenza surveillance in birds.

Lipid and protein-based delivery systems have long been used to deliver active compounds such as drugs, genes, and nutraceuticals. These delivery systems are fabricated to overcome issues of pure active compounds, which include rapid release and metabolism, poor solubility, low stability, poor bioavailability, poor bioaccessibility, and toxicity. However, there are limitations of lipids and proteins that restrict their efficient use in the delivery systems. Lipid-protein conjugation is an emerging technique for fabricating novel delivery systems that provide the advantages of having both proteins and lipids in one delivery system. In addition, these conjugates have a much better synergistic effect and desirable properties inside the body than single carriers. Among them, colloidal and biological stability, enhanced mechanical strength, controlled release, higher circulation time, targeted delivery, less cytotoxicity, higher loading capacity, co-encapsulation, and enhanced bioavailability are key outcomes. Despite recent technological advancement, there are still drawbacks to lipid-protein conjugate-based delivery systems that should be addressed in future research studies. This review is focused on critically evaluating the importance of lipid and protein as delivery systems, benefits of lipid-protein conjugation, conjugation methods, various applications of lipid-protein conjugation in drugs, genes, and nutraceutical delivery, and identifying research challenges and future research directions.

Abstract Background Herbal tea residue (HTR) is generally considered to be the waste of herbal tea beverage production while it still retains rich nutrients and active substances. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of fermentation technology on improving the quality of HTRs, and focus on the fermented HTR-induced alleviation of summer heat stress in fattening cattle. Results In this study, the waste HTR was fermented and then fed to a total of 45 fattening cattle that were divided into 3 groups (fermented HTR replaced 0, 15, 30% of the forage component of the diet), and the feeding experiment was lasted for 40 days. The physiological indexes, growth performance and fecal microbiota of fattening cattle were evaluated and results showed that fermented HTR could effectively reduce the respiratory rate and rectal temperature of fattening cattle under heat stress, increase the daily feed intake and daily gain, and improve the antioxidant content and blood immune index. In addition, we studied the fecal microbiota composition of 6 fattening cattle in control and 30% HTR substitution groups and found fermented HTR significantly changed the composition of fecal microbiota and increased microbial diversity, and correlation analysis suggested that the bacteria were closely related to fecal SCFA levels of fattening cattle under heat stress. Conclusions In this study, fermented HTR replaced 30% of the forage component of the diet that can change the intestine microorganisms, maintain health and alleviate the heat stress of fattening cattle.

In this research, we analyzed the protective effects of red-fleshed apple flavonoid extracts (RAFEs) on male reproductive injury induced by busulfan, using both in vitro and in vivo models. In the cell-based experiments, RAFEs significantly improved cell viability and proliferation rates compared to control groups. Similarly, in vivo testing with male mice showed that RAFEs and whole apple flavonoid extracts (WAFEs) enhanced various biochemical and liver function-related indicators in the testes; however, RAFEs demonstrated superior efficacy in mitigating testicular damage. Through immunohistochemistry, qRT-PCR, and Western blotting, we found that RAFEs notably enhanced the expression of spermatogenesis-related genes. Moreover, RAFEs increased the expression of oxidative stress- and apoptosis-related genes, thereby effectively reducing oxidative damage in the testes. These findings highlight the potential of RAFEs as natural agents for the prevention and treatment of male reproductive injury, paving the way for future research and potential therapeutic applications.

The occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and symptom onset are closely associated with diet. We aimed to compare the dietary and lifestyle triggers between non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) and reflux esophagitis (RE) in Chinese patients and to provide evidence for development of practical dietary modifications for GERD. A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted. A total of 396 GERD patients with typical gastroesophageal reflux symptoms who received upper endoscopy in the previous month were enrolled, including 203 cases of NERD patients and 193 cases of RE patients. All participants completed questionnaires including demographic data, reflux symptoms, previous management, dietary and lifestyle habits, triggers of reflux symptoms, psychological status, and quality of life. There were no significant differences in GERD symptom scores between NERD and RE. RE patients had a higher male proportion and smoking/drinking and overeating rates than NERD patients. In the NERD group, more patients reported that fruits, dairy products, yogurt, bean products, cold food, and carbonated beverages sometimes and often induced reflux symptoms and had more triggers compared to RE patients. The number of triggers was positively correlated to GERD symptom score and GERD-HRQL score in both NERD and RE patients. However, 74.0% of GERD patients still often consumed the triggering foods, even those foods that sometimes and often induced their reflux symptoms, which might be related to the reflux relapse after PPI withdrawal considering NERD and RE patients had similar GERD symptom severity. There were some differences in terms of dietary habits, dietary and lifestyle triggers, and related quality of life between NERD and RE, and these results may provide evidence of different approaches toward the dietary modification of NERD and RE patients.

In this paper, three large curved waveguides based on Sunflower Graded photonic crystal are designed. Numerical simulations of electromagnetic beam bending in Sunflower Graded photonic crystals have shown that homogenization based on the Maxwell–Garnett theory gives very good results for steering the electromagnetic field. In contrast to the progressive bending waveguide structures based on periodic photonic crystal designs reported in the literature, this structure is not only simple in design, but also the optical wave trends in the progressive bending waveguide structures are more smooth. Sunflower structures, due to their high circular symmetry, have a great advantage in making arbitrary curved waveguides. The results have some theoretical implications for the design of optical integrated circuits and the selection of optically thin communication devices. It is also useful for the selection of meta-materials.

Renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis (TIF), characterized by epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of renal tubular epithelial cells, is the typical pathological alteration in diabetic nephropathy. Gentiopicroside (GPS), a natural compound with anti-inflammatory activity, has been demonstrated to alleviate glomerulosclerosis, whereas whether GPS inhibits TIF via regulating inflammation remains unclear. In this study, diabetic db/db mice and high glucose (HG)-stimulated renal tubular epithelial cells (NRK-52E) were applied to explore the effects and mechanisms of GPS on TIF. The results in vivo showed that GPS effectively improves glycolipid metabolism disorder, renal dysfunction, and TIF. In particular, GPS treatment reversed the abnormal expressions of EMT marker proteins including elevated α-smooth muscle actin and vimentin and decreased E-cadherin in the kidney of db/db mice. Moreover, GPS treatment also inhibited protein expressions of angiotensinⅡ type 1 receptor (AT1R) and CK2α and the activation of the NF-κB pathway. Importantly, the aforementioned effects of GPS acted in vivo were further observed in vitro in HG-stimulated NRK-52E cells, which were independent of its effects on glucose and lipid-lowering activity but were reversed by AT1R over-expression. Together, our results indicate that GPS that directly inhibits the CK2/NF-κB inflammatory signaling pathway via AT1R may also contribute to the amelioration of TIF in diabetes.

Anti-adhesive activity of wheat germ-derived peptides, which is considered as one of the promising strategies for preventing Helicobacter pylori infection, was investigated. The underlying mechanism of anti-adhesive action was due to peptides acting as receptor analogues and binding to H. pylori adhesin proteins. However, there is lack of information on the nature and strength of this molecular interaction as well as the participating species and drug-likeness of the food-derived bioactive peptides. In this study, the biostability and ADME/Tox (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity) profile of the anti-adhesive peptides were analyzed using bioinformatic tools, and their binding potential to H. pylori's adhesins estimated by molecular docking. Binding is facilitated by mostly hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction occurring in the active site of the adhesin proteins with affinities ranging from -6.0 to -7.4 and -6.0 to -7.8 kcal/mol for BabA and SabA, respectively. The results indicate highly possible binding capabilities of the peptides to adhesin proteins. Out of 16 peptides studied, 14 bound in the vicinity of the active site of BabA and SabA whereas two different peptides demonstrated allosteric binding. The most hydrophobic peptide, P210 showed strong binding affinity for both BabA and SabA and, therefore, predicted to be the most promising peptide for further development in the prevention, management and treatment of H. pylori infection. The selected peptides were shown to be non-toxic, and to have high potential of localized effect of interfering with bacterial adherence. This work provides insights into the anti-adhesive mechanism of peptides and new evidence demonstrating bioactive peptides as promising nutraceutical candidates for preventing H. pylori infection.

The dissolution of active material in aqueous batteries can lead to a rapid deterioration in capacity, and the presence of free water can also accelerate the dissolution and trigger some side reactions that affect the service life of aqueous batteries. In this study, a MnWO4 cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer is constructed on a δ-MnO2 cathode by cyclic voltammetry, which is effective in inhibiting the dissolution of Mn and improving the reaction kinetics. As a result, the CEI layer enables the δ-MnO2 cathode to produce a better cycling performance, with the capacity maintained at 98.2% (vs. activated capacity at 500 cycles) after 2000 cycles at 10 A g−1. In comparison, the capacity retention rate is merely 33.4% for pristine samples in the same state, indicating that this MnWO4 CEI layer constructed by using a simple and general electrochemical method can promote the development of MnO2 cathodes for aqueous zinc ion batteries.

Lactic acid (LA) is an important chemical material facing rapid demand in recent years. The oriented fermentation of kitchen waste is a promising route for economic LA production. However, the refinement of LA from fermentation broth is a spiny issue. In this study, the performance of ultrafiltration (UF) process for the refinement of LA from the pre-microfiltered broth of kitchen waste fermentation was first investigated. The results showed that with 50 KDa polyethersulfone membrane, under the optimum pressure of 120 KPa, the pH of 6.0, and the backflushing mode with the deionized water for 3 min, the best performance was achieved with the chroma removal efficiency, turbidity removal efficiency, protein removal efficiency and total sugar removal efficiency of 54.3%, 89.8%, 71.7% and 58.5%, respectively, and LA recovery efficiency was 93.6%. The results indicated that the UF process could further effectively refine the pre-microfiltered broth of kitchen waste fermentation, and the combination of microfiltration and UF process is ideal for achieving desirable LA refinement performance. This study verified the feasibility of UF process in LA refinement from pre-microfiltered broth of kitchen waste fermentation, and based on the results, the further exploration of proper post-process to treat UF filtrate for obtaining LA product with higher quality should be explored in the future.

The creative behavior of cultural innovation team members is the key to driving the team forward. Previous studies have relatively neglected the dynamic mechanism of positive verbal rewards on the creative behavior of cultural innovation team members. This paper, drawing on cognitive appraisal theory, focuses on the dynamic mechanism of positive verbal rewards on the creative behavior of cultural innovation team members and the moderating effect of positive affectivity. Based on the survey of 211 cultural innovation team members in Guangdong, China, this paper constructs a relationship model between positive verbal reward, creative self-efficacy, positive affectivity, and members’ creative behaviors and empirically tests the model. The results of statistical data analysis show that positive verbal reward has a significant positive impact on members’ creative behavior. Creative self-efficacy partially mediates between positive verbal rewards and members’ creative behavior; positive affectivity moderates the positive influence of creative self-efficacy on members’ creative behavior. The higher the level of positive affectivity, the stronger the positive impact of positive verbal rewards on members’ creative behavior, and vice versa. The above research findings help clarify the mechanism of positive verbal rewards on the cultural innovation team members’ creative behaviors in the context of Chinese organizations and provide theoretical support for cultural innovation team management practices.
