Advanced oxidation processes, including photocatalysis, have been proven effective at organic dye degradation. Tailored porous materials with regulated pore size, shape, and morphology offer a sustainable solution to the water pollution problem by acting as support materials to grafted photocatalytic nanoparticles (NPs). This research investigated the influence of pore and particle sizes of photocatalytic MICROSCAFS® on the degradation of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution (10 mg/L). Photocatalytic MICROSCAFS® are made of binder-less supported P25 TiO2 NPs within MICROSCAFS®, which are silica–titania microspheres with a controlled size and interconnected macroporosity, synthesized by an adapted sol–gel method that involves a polymerization-induced phase separation process. Photocatalytic experiments were performed both in batch and flow reactors, with this latter one targeting a proof of concept for continuous transformation processes and real-life conditions. Photocatalytic degradation of 87% in 2 h (batch) was achieved, using a calibrated solar light simulator (1 sun) and a photocatalyst/pollutant mass ratio of 23. This study introduces a novel flow kinetic model which provides the modeling and simulation of the photocatalytic MICROSCAFS® performance. A scavenger study was performed, enabling an in-depth mechanistic understanding. Finally, the transformation products resulting from the MO photocatalytic degradation were elucidated by high-resolution mass spectrometry experiments and subjected to an in silico toxicity assessment. While the role of cities and regions is increasingly acknowledged for climate action and discussed in the literature on sustainability transitions, the specific condition of peripheral regions has received less attention. This article develops a bibliometric review to shed light and discuss how the (multi-dimensional) notion of periphery has been conceived and implicitly declinate in different literature streams studying low-carbon sustainability transitions at the sub-national level. While the studies explicitly addressing the issues of peripherality are still scarce, the article identifies four critical dimensions that contribute to frame structural bottlenecks and opportunities: socio-spatial unevenness, asset fragility, network positionality and agency and the multi-scalar embeddedness of transition policies. At the interface of urban and regional studies and sustainability transitions' research, these dimensions open up new research challenges and trading zones ahead for peripheral regions on navigating troubled waters of sustainability transitions. The various stoppages and shortages observed in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic have exposed a series of contradictions and vulnerabilities, especially in the way production structures are organized territorially on a global scale. Although such disruptions are not unprecedented, the facts have drawn attention to the need to adopt strategies to make them more resilient. Based on the recent literature on the subject, this article aims to present a reflection on the content of reshoring, diversification and sustainability strategies, looking at their definitions (conceptual and practical meanings), complexities, challenges and implications for the economy and the territory. To complement the theoretical discussion, we will illustrate how these strategies are being incorporated into official documents relating to the new European industrial strategy. In methodological terms, bibliographical research and documentary research were carried out. Among the documents analyzed, the communications prepared by the European Commission in 2020 and 2021 stand out. Preliminary results show that the reallocation of fixed assets has several complexities and barriers, making diversification a less costly and more feasible solution in the short and medium term. Multicomponent oxide microspheres with interconnected macroporosity (MICROSCAFS®) are new materials with great potential as support materials for photocatalysis, optimized for real life applications and for other uses that are still being explored. They are obtained from an adapted sol–gel process combined with phase separation phenomena that occur within the water droplets of an emulsion. We present here a methodology based on cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) that allows, with minimal specimen preparation, the direct and in situ visualization of 'wet' alkoxide-derived microstructures, for the mechanistic study of the complex process of MICROSCAFS® generation. It is simultaneously combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to visualize phase separation phenomena and study the chemical elemental composition at specific regions of the sample and reaction times. Although much has been written about the challenges of big data, there has been little reflection on the historicity of such debates and what we can learn from it. With this in mind, the aim of this article is to situate the epistemological debates over big data in geography historically. We focus on the three most relevant topics in current discussions around big data that have significant historical resonance, namely its methodological challenges, its scientific value, and its positionality. We conclude by arguing that understanding the historical resonance of current big data debates is helpful to find new ways to question its epistemological consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Smart specialization strategies are a new EU approach to cohesion policy, meant to deliver growth and development at EU national and regional level. Bearing in mind its focus on place-based development strategies, this paper intends to shed some light on its appropriateness to tackle uneven development and regional growth divergence. The paper showcases Spanish Extremadura growth trajectory. Extremadura is a poor region in the European context that between 2008 and 2014 diverged from the EU average, despite being eligible for EU funding as a convergence region by cohesion policy. In the 2014–2020 programming period, there was a positive dynamic at the beginning, but from 2017 onwards convergence stopped, which indicates that thematic and regional programmes have not delivered results or have not compensated for higher growth level of other Spanish regions. Moreover, research and innovation strategies for smart specialization (RIS3) seem to have limited impacts on place-based economic transformation in less developed regions. From this example, the suitability of the smart specialisation strategy as the core of cohesion policy in the programming period is discussed. It concludes that this strategy is interesting for intermediate development regions with some industrial base but does not seem appropriate as a convergence driver for poorer regions.
