The innate immune system is the first player involved in the recognition/interaction with nanomaterials. Still, it is not the only system involved. The co-evolution of the microbiota with the innate immune system built an interdependence regulating immune homeostasis that is poorly studied. Herein, the simultaneous interaction of iron-oxide nanoparticles (Fe-oxide NPs), immune cells, and the microbiota associated with the blood of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus was explored by using a microbiota/immune cell model in vitro-ex vivo and a battery of complementary tools, including Raman spectroscopy, 16S Next-Generation Sequencing, high-content imaging, NanoString nCounter. Our findings highlight the P. lividus immune cells and microbiota dynamics in response to Fe-oxide NPs, including i) morphological rearrangement and immune cell health status maintenance (intracellular trafficking increasing, no phenotypic alterations or caspase 3/7 activation), ii) transcriptomic reprogramming in immune cells (Smad6, Lmo2, Univin, suPaxB, Frizzled-7, Fgfr2, Gp96 upregulation), iii) immune signaling unchanged (e.g., P-p38 MAPK, P-ERK, TLR4, IL-6 protein level unchanged), iv) enrichment in extracellular vesicle released in the co-culture medium, and v) a shift in the composition of microbial groups mainly in favor of Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Firmicutes, Actinobacteria),. This review focuses on the use of a sulfonated pentablock copolymer commercialized as Nexar TM in water purification applications. The properties and the use of sulfonated copolymers, in general, and of Nexar TM , in particular, are described within a brief reference focusing on the problem of different water contaminants, purification technologies, and the use of nanomaterials and nanocomposites for water treatment. In addition to desalination and pervaporation processes, adsorption and photocatalytic processes are also considered here. The reported results confirm the possibility of using Nexar TM as a matrix for embedded nanoparticles, exploiting their performance in adsorption and photocatalytic processes and preventing their dispersion in the environment. Furthermore, the reported antimicrobial and antibiofouling properties of Nexar TM make it a promising material for achieving active coatings that are able to enhance commercial filter lifetime and performance. The coated filters show selective and efficient removal of cationic contaminants in filtration processes, which is not observed with a bare commercial filter. The UV surface treatment and/or the addition of nanostructures such as graphene oxide (GO) flakes confer Nexar TM with coating additional functionalities and activity. Finally, other application fields of this polymer are reported, i.e., energy and/or gas separation, suggesting its possible use as an efficient and economical alternative to the more well-known Nafion polymer.

Purpose: To compare outcomes after laparoscopic versus open major liver resection (hemihepatectomy) mainly for primary or metastatic cancer. The primary outcome measure was time to functional recovery. Secondary outcomes included morbidity, quality of life (QoL), and for those with cancer, resection margin status and time to adjuvant systemic therapy., Patients and Methods: This was a multicenter, randomized controlled, patient-blinded, superiority trial on adult patients undergoing hemihepatectomy. Patients were recruited from 16 hospitals in Europe between November 2013 and December 2018., Results: Of the 352 randomly assigned patients, 332 patients (94.3%) underwent surgery (laparoscopic, n = 166 and open, n = 166) and comprised the analysis population. The median time to functional recovery was 4 days (IQR, 3-5; range, 1-30) for laparoscopic hemihepatectomy versus 5 days (IQR, 4-6; range, 1-33) for open hemihepatectomy (difference, -17.5% [96% CI, -25.6 to -8.4]; P < .001). There was no difference in major complications (laparoscopic 24/166 [14.5%] v open 28/166 [16.9%]; odds ratio [OR], 0.84; P = .58). Regarding QoL, both global health status (difference, 3.2 points; P < .001) and body image (difference, 0.9 points; P < .001) scored significantly higher in the laparoscopic group. For the 281 (84.6%) patients with cancer, R0 resection margin status was similar (laparoscopic 106 [77.9%] v open 122 patients [84.1%], OR, 0.60; P = .14) with a shorter time to adjuvant systemic therapy in the laparoscopic group (46.5 days v 62.8 days, hazard ratio, 2.20; P = .009)., Conclusion: Among patients undergoing hemihepatectomy, the laparoscopic approach resulted in a shorter time to functional recovery compared with open surgery. In addition, it was associated with a better QoL, and in patients with cancer, a shorter time to adjuvant systemic therapy with no adverse impact on cancer outcomes observed.

Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that negatively impacts the quality of life and work productivity of patients., Objectives: We sought to evaluate the real-world burden of AD patients in Italy., Methods: This sub-analysis of the MEASURE-AD multicountry study conducted between December 2019-2020 included patients diagnosed with moderate-to-severe AD eligible for or receiving systemic therapy in the previous 6 months. During a single visit, physician and patient-reported questionnaires were used., Results: A total of 118 adult patients were enrolled and 57.6% (N = 68) of patients had moderate-to-severe AD at the time of enrolment according to the Eczema Area and Severity Index. Sleep disorders interfered with daily function in the previous week in 58.5% (N = 69) of patients, pruritus was severe in 50% (N = 59) and 42.4% (N = 50) reported a flare lasting >7 days in the previous 6 months. According to the Dermatology Quality of Life Index, 37.3% (N = 44) of patients reported a severe impact of AD and approximately 10% had clinical depression/anxiety. Current drug therapy was considered inadequate in controlling AD in 26.3% (N=31) of patients. Work activity impairment was 38.6±31.7% and monthly AD-related expenses were 148.6±134.6 Euros per patient., Conclusions: This real-life study documents a high burden of disease in patients with moderate-severe AD in Italy.

In this paper, we used micro-Raman spectroscopy in cross-section to investigate the effect of different doping on the distribution of stress in the silicon substrate and the grown 3C-SiC film. The 3C-SiC films with a thickness up to 10 μm were grown on Si (100) substrates in a horizontal hot-wall chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor. To quantify the influence of doping on the stress distribution, samples were non-intentionally doped (NID, dopant incorporation below 10 16 cm -3 ), strongly n-type doped ([N] > 10 19 cm -3 ), or strongly p-type doped ([Al] > 10 19 cm -3 ). Sample NID was also grown on Si (111). In silicon (100), we observed that the stress at the interface is always compressive. In 3C-SiC, instead, we observed that the stress at the interface is always tensile and remains so in the first 4 µm. In the remaining 6 µm, the type of stress varies according to the doping. In particular, for 10 μm thick samples, the presence of an n-doped layer at the interface maximizes the stress in the silicon (~700 MPa) and in the 3C-SiC film (~250 MPa). In the presence of films grown on Si(111), 3C-SiC shows a compressive stress at the interface and then immediately becomes tensile following an oscillating trend with an average value of 412 MPa.

In this work, we coated polypropylene (PP) fibrous filters with sulfonated pentablock copolymer (s-PBC) layers and tested them for the removal of cationic organic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), and heavy metal ions (Fe3+ and Co2+) from water by adsorption and filtration experiments. Some of the coated filters were irradiated by UV light before being exposed to contaminated water and then were tested with unirradiated filters in the same adsorption and filtration experiments. Polymer-coated filters showed high efficiency in removing MB from an aqueous solution in both absorption and filtration processes, with 90% and 80% removal, respectively. On the other hand, for heavy metal ions (Fe3+ and Co2+), the coated filters showed a better removal performance in the filtration process than for the adsorption one. In fact, in the adsorption process, controlled interaction times allow the ionic species to interact with the surface of the filters leading to the formation and release of new species in solution. During filtration, the ionic species are easily trapped in the filters, in particular by UV modified filters, and we observed for Fe3+ ions a total removal (>99%) in a single filtration process and for Co2+ ions a larger removal with respect to the untreated filter. The mechanisms involved in the removal of the contaminants processes were investigated by characterizing the filters before and after use by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).

Despite the promising properties, the problem of cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) heteroepitaxy on silicon has not yet been resolved and its use in microelectronics is limited by the presence of extensive defects. In this paper, we used microphotoluminescence (μ-PL), molten KOH etching, and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HRSTEM) to investigate the effect of nitrogen doping on the distribution of stacking faults (SFs) and assess how increasing dosages of nitrogen during chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth inhibits the development of SFs. An innovative angle-resolved SEM observation approach of molten KOH-etched samples resulted in detailed statistics on the density of the different types of defects as a function of the growth thickness of 3C-SiC free-standing samples with varied levels of nitrogen doping. Moreover, we proceeded to shed light on defects revealed by a diamond-shaped pit. In the past, they were conventionally associated with dislocations (Ds) due to what happens in 4H-SiC, where the formation of pits is always linked with the presence of Ds. In this work, the supposed Ds were observed at high magnification (by HRSTEM), demonstrating that principally they are partial dislocations (PDs) that delimit an SF, whose development and propagation are suppressed by the presence of nitrogen. These results were compared with VESTA simulations, which allowed to simulate the 3C-SiC lattice to design two 3C-lattice domains delimited by different types of SFs. Background: Laparoscopic redo resections for colorectal metastases are poorly investigated. This study aims to explore long-term results after second, third, and fourth resections., Material and Methods: Prospectively updated databases of primary and redo laparoscopic liver resections in six European HPB centers were analyzed. Procedure-related overall survival after first, second, third, and fourth resections were evaluated. Furthermore, patients without liver recurrence after first liver resection were compared to those with one redo, two or three redo, and patients with palliative treatment for liver recurrence after first laparoscopic liver surgery. Survival was calculated both from the date of the first liver resection and from the date of the actual liver resection. In total, 837 laparoscopic primary and redo liver resections performed in 762 patients were included (630 primary, 172 first redo, 29 second redo, and 6 third redo). Patients were bunched into four groups: Group 1-without hepatic recurrence after primary liver resection (n = 441); Group 2-with liver recurrence who underwent only one laparoscopic redo resection (n = 154); Group 3-with liver recurrence who underwent two laparoscopic redo resections (n = 29); Group 4-with liver recurrence who have not been found suitable for redo resections (n = 138)., Results: No significant difference has been found between the groups in terms of baseline characteristics and surgical outcomes. Rate of positive resection margin was higher in the group with palliative recurrence (group 4). Five-year survival calculated from the first liver resection was 67%, 62%, 84%, and 7% for group 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. Procedure-specific 5-year overall survival was 50% after primary laparoscopic liver resection, 52% after the 1st reoperation, 52% after the 2nd, and 40% after the 3rd reoperation made laparoscopic., Conclusions: Multiple redo recurrences can be performed laparoscopically with good long-term results. Liver recurrence does not aggravate prognosis as long as the patient is suitable for reoperation., (© 2021. The Author(s).)
