(1) Background: Clinical aspects like sex, age, Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) and psychosocial distress can affect the health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) and treatment satisfaction of patients with malignant isocitrate dehydrogenase wild-type (IDHwt) gliomas and caregivers. (2) Methods: We prospectively investigated the HR-QoL and patient/caregiver treatment satisfaction in a cross-sectional study with univariable and multiple regression analyses. Questionnaires were applied to investigate the HR-QoL (EORTC QLQ-C30, QLQ-BN20) and treatment satisfaction (EORTC PATSAT-C33). (3) Results: A cohort of 61 patients was investigated. A higher KPS was significantly associated with a better HR-QoL regarding the functional scales of the EORTC QLQ-C30 ( p < 0.004) and a lower symptom burden regarding the EORTC QLQ-BN20 ( p < 0.001). The patient treatment satisfaction was significantly poorer in the patients older than 60 years in the domain of family involvement ( p = 0.010). None of the investigated aspects showed a significant impact on the treatment satisfaction of caregivers. (4) Conclusions: We demonstrated that in patients with IDHwt gliomas, the KPS was the most important predictor for a better HR-QoL in functional domains. Data on the HR-QoL and treatment satisfaction in patients with IDHwt gliomas and their caregivers are rare; therefore, further efforts should be made to improve supportive care in this highly distressed cohort.

Between 2015 and 2022, over 200 wells were sampled in four catchment areas of Benin, using both Cvetkov plankton nets (funnel 200 µm mesh size, 150 µm below valve) and baited traps. As artificial wells serve as ecotones (interfaces between surface and groundwater ecosystems), the ostracod fauna is mostly represented by two families; Cyprididae (mainly epigeic) and Candonidae (hypogeic). Here, we describe a new subfamily of Candonidae from the wells in Benin, the Benincandoninae subfam. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens, represented by one genus, Benincandona gen. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens. We found 35 species belonging to this evolutionary radiation, of which we describe five new species: Benincandona martini gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens, B. ibikounlei gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens, B. sakitii gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens, B. cebios gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens and B. trapezoides gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens. The new subfamily and genus are characterised by a unique combination of characters, such as a seven-segmented antennula and a caudal ramus with a fully developed ramus, a single apical (anterior) claw and three short setae. Species within the genus can be distinguished by their carapace and hemipenis morphology, together with some limb characteristics. Whereas extensive subterranean candonid radiations have previously been reported from Europe, North and Central America and Northwest Australia (Pilbara), this is the first time such a vast radiation of subterranean candonids is reported from (West) Africa.

Sounds in intensive care units: Perspectives of patients and parents. A qualitative study Abstract: Background: Sound levels in intensive care units exceed internationally recommended limits. This can have negative effects on patients, relatives, and staff. There is a lack of evidence on noise-reducing measures. Aim: The aim of the study was the implementation and evaluation of ward-specific noise management in intensive care units. In the present article, the question of the noise and stress experience of intensive care patients and parents of neonatal intensive care patients was explored. Methods: 33 semi-structured interviews with intensive care patients and parents of neonatal intensive care patients in three intensive care units were conducted and analysed. Results: Sounds in intensive care units can be stressful (especially alarms) but also be interpreted as meaningful. This is not only related to the context of the ICU, but also to individual experiences and the social aspects of the sounds. In order to avoid or reduce stress, participants apply individual noise (stress) management. In contrast, ward-related noise management had no specific effect on the participants. Conclusions: The findings offer indications for suitable measures to reduce the noise exposure of intensive care patients and parents of neonatal intensive care patients. Research about measures such as concepts for supporting the attribution and differentiation of sounds could follow.

Background: Malignant isocitrate dehydrogenase wild-type (IDHwt) gliomas impose a high symptomatic and psychological burden. Wide distances from patients' homes to cancer centers may affect the delivery of psycho-oncological care. Here, we investigated, in a large brain tumor center with a rural outreach, the initiation of psycho-oncological care depending on spatial distance and impact of psycho-oncological care on emergency visits., Methods: Electronic patient charts, the regional tumor registry, and interviews with the primary care physicians were used to investigate clinical data, psycho-oncological care, and emergency unit visits. Interrelations with socio-demographic, clinical, and treatment aspects were investigated using univariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analysis and the Pearson's Chi-square test., Results: Of 491, 229 adult patients of this retrospective cohort fulfilled the inclusion criteria for analysis. During the last three months of their lives, 48.9% received at least one psycho-oncological consultation, and 37.1% visited the emergency unit at least once. The distance from the cancer center did neither affect the initiation of psycho-oncological care nor the rate of emergency unit visits. Receiving psycho-oncological care did not correlate with the frequency of emergency unit visits in the last three months of life., Conclusion: We conclude that the distance of IDHwt glioma patients' homes from their cancer center, even in a rural area, does not significantly influence the rate of psycho-oncological care., (© The Author(s) 2023. To date, only one mitogenome from an Antarctic amphipod has been published. Here, novel complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of two morphospecies are assembled, namely, Charcotia amundseni and Eusirus giganteus . For the latter species, we have assembled two mitogenomes from different genetic clades of this species. The lengths of Eusirus and Charcotia mitogenomes range from 15,534 to 15,619 base pairs and their mitogenomes are composed of 13 protein coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs, and 1 putative control region CR. Some tRNAs display aberrant structures suggesting that minimalization is also ongoing in amphipod mitogenomes. The novel mitogenomes of the two Antarctic species have features distinguishing them from other amphipod mitogenomes such as a lower AT-richness in the whole mitogenomes and a negative GC- skew in both strands of protein coding genes. The genetically most variable mitochondrial regions of amphipods are nad6 and atp8 , while cox1 shows low nucleotide diversity among closely and more distantly related species. In comparison to the pancrustacean mitochondrial ground pattern, E. giganteus shows a translocation of the nad1 gene, while cytb and nad6 genes are translocated in C. amundseni . Phylogenetic analysis based on mitogenomes illustrates that Eusirus and Charcotia cluster together with other species belonging to the same amphipod superfamilies. In the absence of reference nuclear genomes, mitogenomes can be useful to develop markers for studying population genetics or evolutionary relationships at higher taxonomic levels., Competing Interests: No potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s)., (© 2022 The Author(s).
