Abstract: International audience; The arrest of protein synthesis caused when ribosomes stall on an mRNA lacking a stop codon is a deadly risk for all cells. In bacteria, this situation is remedied by the trans-translation quality control system. Trans-translation occurs because of the synergistic action of two main partners, transfer-messenger RNA (tmRNA) and small protein B (SmpB). These act in complex to monitor protein synthesis, intervening when necessary to rescue stalled ribosomes. During this process, incomplete nascent peptides are tagged for destruction, problematic mRNAs are degraded and the previously stalled ribosomes are recycled. In this 'Structural Snapshot' article, we describe the mechanism at the molecular level, a view updated after the most recent structural studies using cryo-electron microscopy.

Abstract: International audience; We report the influence of positional isomerism on the electronic (electrochemical HOMO/LUMO energy levels), photophysical and physical properties (molecular organization, crystallinity and phase transitions) and charge transport properties of dispiroacridine-indacenobisthiophene positional isomers. The isomers differ from the central indacenobisthiophene (IDT) core, which displays either para or meta linkages. We show that the spiro-connected phenylacridine bridges have a significant influence on all these properties and particularly on the charge transport mobility values, which were found to be higher in the meta isomer than in the para isomer. This finding is different to what was reported in the literature for the other couples of IDT-based isomers and shows the key role played by the spiro-connected fragments in these molecular systems.

Abstract: International audience; Obesity is characterized by systemic low-grade inflammation associated with disturbances of intestinal homeostasis and microbiota dysbiosis. Mitochondrial metabolism sustains epithelial homeostasis by providing energy to colonic epithelial cells (CEC) but can be altered by dietary modulations of the luminal environment. Our study aimed at evaluating whether the consumption of an obesogenic diet alters the mitochondrial function of CEC in mice. Mice were fed for 22 weeks with a 58% kcal fat diet (diet-induced obesity [DIO] group) or a 10% kcal fat diet (control diet, CTRL). Colonic crypts were isolated to assess mitochondrial function while colonic content was collected to characterize microbiota and metabolites. DIO mice developed obesity, intestinal hyperpermeability, and increased endotoxemia. Analysis of isolated colonic crypt bioenergetics revealed a mitochondrial dysfunction marked by decreased basal and maximal respirations and lower respiration linked to ATP production in DIO mice. Yet, CEC gene expression of mitochondrial respiration chain complexes and mitochondrial dynamics were not altered in DIO mice. In parallel, DIO mice displayed increased colonic bile acid concentrations, associated with higher abundance of Desulfovibrionaceae. Sulfide concentration was markedly increased in the colon content of DIO mice. Hence, chronic treatment of CTRL mouse colon organoids with sodium sulfide provoked mitochondrial dysfunction similar to that observed in vivo in DIO mice while acute exposure of isolated mitochondria from CEC of CTRL mice to sodium sulfide diminished complex IV activity. Our study provides new insights into colon mitochondrial dysfunction in obesity by revealing that increased sulfide production by DIO-induced dysbiosis impairs complex IV activity in mouse CEC.

Abstract: Context We study the benefits of using a large public neuroimaging database composed of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) statistic maps, in a self-taught learning framework, for improving brain decoding on new tasks. First, we leverage the NeuroVault database to train, on a selection of relevant statistic maps, a convolutional autoencoder to reconstruct these maps. Then, we use this trained encoder to initialize a supervised convolutional neural network to classify tasks or cognitive processes of unseen statistic maps from large collections of the NeuroVault database. Results We show that such a self-taught learning process always improves the performance of the classifiers, but the magnitude of the benefits strongly depends on the number of samples available both for pretraining and fine-tuning the models and on the complexity of the targeted downstream task. Conclusion The pretrained model improves the classification performance and displays more generalizable features, less sensitive to individual differences.

Abstract: International audience; This article presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of an active electromagnetic shield intended to dynamically protect optical and electromagnetic sensors against high intensity radiated fields. The shield exhibits high and constant optical transparency level over the entire visible light spectrum thanks to a micrometric mesh metal thin film printed on a glass substrate. The central micrometric mesh area is separated from the peripheral ground plane of the shield by a peripheral slot. This slot is fitted out with p-i-n diodes and resistors, connecting electrically the central micrometric mesh area and the ground plane. The aim of these components is to dynamically control the shielding effectiveness of the screen, by using the conducting (ON) or blocking (OFF) states of the p-i-n diodes. Accordingly, the shielding effectiveness can be set at high level to protect the system against high intensity radiated fields, and conversely at low level to both prevent system electromagnetic self-perturbation and increase the sensitivity of the internal electromagnetic sensors. Dynamic control of the shielding effectiveness of the fabricated screen, whose optical transparency is close to 85% over the entire visible light spectrum, is fully demonstrated. A shielding effectiveness contrast ranging from 5 dB to 24 dB between the ON and OFF diode states was measured in the 2-10.5 GHz frequency range in a reverberation chamber.

Abstract: International audience; Robotic incremental sheet forming has arisen a recent industrial interest, as a more flexible and cost-effective solution to the process using rigid computer numerical control (CNC) machines. However, the numerical prediction of the forming loads and final geometry coupled to an elastic modeling of the robot is essential to optimize the robot trajectory and thus to ensure the geometrical accuracy of the final part. Within this context, the aim of this study is to investigate the accuracy of the load prediction in the case of a single point incremental forming process of a commercially pure (CP) titanium alloy sheet. The mechanical behavior is characterized at room temperature under two strain states, i.e., uniaxial and biaxial tension, and a truncated cone of the same material is obtained by single point incremental forming. A 3D cell records all the components of the applied load during the forming and the part is laser scanned at the end of the process, though still clamped along the outer edge. A numerical model of the process is developed assuming some symmetries to reduce the computational time. The influence of the hardening law, either identified from the uniaxial or biaxial tensile tests, on the forming load prediction is investigated, with a focus on the strain path during single point incremental forming.

Abstract: International audience; In this article, we report on a series of cyclometalated chloro- and alkynyl-platinum(ii) complexes bearing various tridentate NCN-cyclometalated ligands derived from 1,3-bis(pyrimidin-2-yl)benzene. The X-ray crystal structures of two alkynyl-platinum(ii) complexes were determined and other structures were DFT-calculated. Electrochemical and DFT-computational studies suggest a ligand-centred reduction on the R-1-substituted NCN ligand, whereas oxidation likely occurs either on the Pt-phenylacetylide moiety and/or the cyclometalated ligand. In CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature, the complexes show phosphorescent emissions ranging from green to orange, depending on the R-1 and R-2 substituents on the ligands. In KBr solid state matrix, excluding complexes bearing a trifluoromethyl substituted ligand, all compounds exhibit red emission. The presence of an alkynyl ancillary ligand has limited influence on absorption and emission spectra except in the case of the complex with the strongly electron-donating diphenylamino R-2 substituent on the alkynyl ligand, for which a significant red-shift was observed. The alkynyl Pt(ii) complex with OMe groups as both R-1 and R-2 substituents shows the best emission quantum yield (0.81 in CH2Cl2 solution) in this series. The full series of DFT calculated band gaps correlated generally well with the electrochemical and absorption data and reasonably model the impact of the substituents on the electronics of these complexes.

Abstract: International audience; Ynamides are useful and versatile building blocks in organic synthesis, from which 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobutadienes (TCBD) can be prepared for application in molecular electronics. However, their insertion onto multi-functional molecular scaffold remains a synthetic challenge. In this work, we report the two-steps synthesis in good isolated yield (64% overall, 89 degrees o stepwise) of a tetraphenylethylene (TPE) bearing four ynamides, and its further one-step conversion into the tetra-TCBD derivative through a [2 + 2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization sequence. The concomitant formation of the four ynamides required a specific optimisation of the reaction conditions. Although a poor fluorescent emitter in solution, the tetra-TCBD compound displayed near-infrared luminescence in the solid state, which is an attractive optoelectronic feature when considering future applications in molecular electronic devices.

Abstract: International audience; The development of highly efficient enantioselective olefin metathesis catalysts is a significant challenge. Using optically pure chiral cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (ChiCAAC) ligands combined with preliminary mechanistic insights and density functional theory (DFT) computations, we show that catalytic performances in this field can be impaired by the formation of rotamers before the enantio-determining step. Using DFT, we also demonstrate that these results can help accelerate the process of ligand discovery by providing faster methods to discriminate potential candidates.

Abstract: The multidomain ribosomal protein bS1 is the biggest and the most flexible and dynamic protein in the 30S small subunit. Despite being essential for mRNA recruitment and its primary role in the accommodation of the start codon within the decoding centre, there has not yet been a high-resolution description of its structure. Here, we present a 3D atomic model of OB1 and OB2, bS1’s first two N-terminal domains, bound to an elongation-competent 70S ribosome. Our structure reveals that, as previously reported, bS1 is anchored both by a π-stacking to the 30S subunit and via a salt bridge with the Zn2+ pocket of bS1. These contacts are further stabilized by other interactions with additional residues on OB1. Our model also shows a new conformation of OB2, interacting with the Shine–Dalgarno portion of the mRNA. This study confirms that OB1 plays an anchoring role, but also highlights a novel function for OB2, which is directly involved in the modulation and support of mRNA binding and accommodation on the ribosome.

Abstract: International audience; The well-known synthesis of the two polymorphs of the {[Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4)}n spin crossover coordination polymer is explored with new template-free methods that allow a control over the local synthetic conditions. A “one-pot” synthesis approach is developed, in which the solid reactants are mixed together before the addition of the solvent, which is expected to generate instantaneous supersaturation conditions favoring the nucleation of particles over their growth. In a second method, the addition of ultrasound pulses promotes the appearance of local “hot spots” that affect the local temperature and allow exploring a different region of the concentration–temperature phase diagram, leading to an increase in the phase purity of the product. These two syntheses are compared to the classical method in which the reactants are first dissolved in separate solutions before being mixed. The use of a one-pot synthesis, with or without ultrasound pulses, induces a downsizing of the particle size by a factor of 500 on their volume. The addition of ultrasound pulses allows moving from a mixture of polymorphs I and II of this compound to the pure phase I. These approaches open the way to more studies on the control over the size or phase purity in such molecular compounds, without the use of any surfactant.

Abstract: International audience; The hygrothermal behavior of a bio-based multilayered wall has been studied by numerical simulations. The key point of these research investigations was to properly describe the hygrothermal transfers occurring inside the studied wall solution. In previous work, the case of the wall subjected to a given real climate (Wroughton HIVE demonstrator, UK, Feb 2018) has been investigated. The present work, focused on the moisture regulation capacity of the wall, considers an improved kinetics model of sorption, different layer configurations, one additional climate (Bordeaux, FR, Apr 2008) and the effect of indoor cyclic loads. Compared to the classical approach, the local kinetics approach results in prediction of stronger and steeper hygric dynamics with larger relative humidity variations at small time scales. The study of the different wall configurations allows to determine the best one in terms of moisture damping: the vapor control membrane is advantageously removed provided the OSB3 12 mm layer is replaced by an OSB4 18 mm layer. Moreover, the simulations show that the Moisture Buffer Value characteristic of each material layer is not a sufficient criterion to evaluate hygric performance of the wall; strong hygric interactions occur with the layer's permeability independently of its sorption capacity. Finally, water content hysteresis phenomena are studied and it appears that under usual operating conditions, they can be ignored by adjusting the layers' permeabilities for adequate fits on the Moisture Buffer Value tests.

This review also provides a basic level of understanding how nanocomposites are characterized and processed using different techniques and methods. Abstract: International audience; Insects are currently subjected to unprecedented thermal stress due to recent increases in the frequency and amplitude of temperature extremes. Understanding molecular responses to thermal stress is critically important to appreciate how species react to thermal stress. Three co-occurring cosmopolitan species are found within the guild of cereal aphids: Sitobion avenae, Ropalosiphum padi and Metopolophium dirhodum. Earlier reports have shown that increasing frequency of temperature extremes causes a shift in dominant species within guilds of cereal aphids by differently altering the population’s growth. We hypothesize that a differential molecular response to stress among species may partially explain these changes. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones well known to play an important role in protecting against the adverse effects of thermal stress. However, few studies on molecular chaperones have been conducted in cereal aphids. In this study, we compared the heat and cold tolerance between three aphid species by measuring the median lethal time (Lt50) and examined the expression profiles of seven hsp genes after exposures to comparable thermal injury levels and also after same exposure durations. Results showed that R. padi survived comparatively better at high temperatures than the two other species but was more cold-sensitive. Hsp genes were induced more strongly by heat than cold stress. Hsp70A was the most strongly up-regulated gene in response to both heat and cold stress. R. padi had more heat inducible genes and significantly higher mRNA levels of hsp70A, hsp10, hsp60 and hsp90 than the other two species. Hsps ceased to be expressed at 37 °C in M. dirhodum and S. avenae while expression was maintained in R. padi. In contrast, M. dirhodum was more cold tolerant and had more cold inducible genes than the others. These results confirm species-specific differences in molecular stress responses and suggest that differences in induced expression of hsps may be related to species’ thermal tolerance, thus causing the changes in the relative abundance.

Abstract: A single critical thermal limit is often used to explain and infer the impact of climate change on geographic range and population abundance. However, it has limited application in describing the temporal dynamic and cumulative impacts of extreme temperatures. Here, we used a thermal tolerance landscape approach to address the impacts of extreme thermal events on the survival of co-existing aphid species (Metopolophium dirhodum, Sitobion avenae and Rhopalosiphum padi). Specifically, we built the thermal death time (TDT) models based on detailed survival datasets of three aphid species with three ages across a broad range of stressful high (34–40 °C) and low (−3∼−11 °C) temperatures to compare the interspecific and developmental stage variations in thermal tolerance. Using these TDT parameters, we performed a thermal risk assessment by calculating the potential daily thermal injury accumulation associated with the regional temperature variations in three wheat-growing sites along a latitude gradient. Results showed that M. dirhodum was the most vulnerable to heat but more tolerant to low temperatures than R. padi and S. avenae. R. padi survived better at high temperatures than Sitobion avenae and M. dirhodum but was sensitive to cold. R. padi was estimated to accumulate higher cold injury than the other two species during winter, while M. dirhodum accrued more heat injury during summer. The warmer site had higher risks of heat injury and the cooler site had higher risks of cold injury along a latitude gradient. These results support recent field observations that the proportion of R. padi increases with the increased frequency of heat waves. We also found that young nymphs generally had a lower thermal tolerance than old nymphs or adults. Our results provide a useful dataset and method for modelling and predicting the consequence of climate change on the population dynamics and community structure of small insects.

Abstract: International audience; The fifth generation (5G) of mobile communications gives birth to the evolution of the base stations. They progressively include arrays of antennas in the sub-6 GHz frequency band worldwide. Moreover, 5G takes advantage of the beamforming capabilities to gain power efficiency and higher throughputs. Within this framework, achieving high decoupling performance between any pairs of antennas and compactness at the same time become a major challenge. The present paper describes an advanced solution based on the interposition of a thin and low-profile absorbing wall operating in the 3.4-3.6 GHz frequency band. The absorption is provided by a frequency selective surface whose elementary pattern size is first optimized. Then, the compact absorbing wall that associates back-to-back pieces of absorber is interposed between elements of an antenna array. Moreover, the fabrication of both antenna array and decoupling device involve lightweight and low-cost composite technology. The results show that such a compact decoupling device achieves excellent decoupling capabilities while keeping up the antenna array performance.

Abstract: International audience; Currently, turkey coronaviruses (TCoV) are isolated from homogenized intestines of experimentally infected embryos to ensure a maximum recovery of viral particles from all components of the intestines. However, the process of homogenization also ensures release of a significant amount of cellular RNAs into the sample that hinders downstream viral genome sequencing. This is especially the case for next generation sequencing (NGS) which sequences molecules at random. This characteristic means that the heavily abundant cellular RNA in the sample drowns out the minority viral RNA during the sequencing process and, consequently, very little to no viral genome data are obtained. To address this problem, a method was developed, in which 10 descendent isolates of the European strain of TCoV were recovered uniquely from the intestinal lumen without homogenization of the tissue. For nine out of 10 samples, NGS produced viral RNA reads with good coverage depth over the entire TCoV genomes. This is a much-needed new, simple and cost effective method of isolating TCoV that facilitates downstream NGS of viral RNA and should be considered as an alternative method for isolating other avian enteric coronaviruses in the interest of obtaining full-length genome sequences.

Abstract: International audience; Mitochondria are essential to cell homeostasis, and alterations in mitochondrial distribution, segregation, and turnover have been linked to complex pathologies such as neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Understanding how these functions are coordinated in specific cell types is a major challenge to discover how mitochondria globally shape cell functionality. In this review, we first describe how mitochondrial transport and dynamics are regulated throughout the cell cycle in yeast and in mammals. Second, we explore the functional consequences of mitochondrial transport and partitioning on cell proliferation, fate acquisition, and stemness and on the way cells adapt their metabolism. Finally, we focus on how mitochondrial clearance programs represent a further layer of complexity for cell differentiation or in the maintenance of stemness. Defining how mitochondrial transport, dynamics, and clearance are mutually orchestrated in specific cell types may help our understanding of how cells can transition from a physiological to a pathological state.

Abstract: International audience; The present study was conducted to provide new insights into the mechanisms that may be responsible for cadmium (Cd)-induced toxicity in zebrafish larvae as well as the role of the trace element zinc (Zn) in reversing Cd harmful effects. For this purpose, zebrafish eggs were exposed to Cd or/and Zn for 96 h. The effects on morphological aspect; mortality rate; Cd, Zn, and metallothionein (MT) levels; oxidative stress biomarkers; as well as molecular expression of some genes involved in Zn metabolism (Zn-MT, ZIP10, and ZnT1) and in antioxidant defense system (Cu/Zn-SOD, CAT and GPx) were examined. Our results showed that Cd toxicity was exerted, initially, by an interference with Zn metabolism. Thus, Cd was able to modify the expression of the corresponding genes so as to ensure its intracellular accumulation at the expense of Zn, causing its depletion. An oxidative stress was then generated, representing the second mode of Cd action which resulted in developmental anomalies and subsequently mortality. Interestingly, significant corrections have been noted following Zn supplementation based, essentially, on its ability to interact with the toxic metal. The increases of Zn bioavailability, the improvement of the oxidative status, as well as changes in Zn transporter expression profile are part of the protection mechanisms. The decrease of Cd-induced MTs after Zn supplement, both at the protein and the mRNA level, suggests that the protection provided by Zn is ensured through mechanisms not involving MT expression but which rather depend on the oxidative status.

Abstract: Satellite observations of significant wave height (Hs) have recently reached 30 years of continuous record. Is this length sufficient to detect the effect of anthropogenically forced climate change on wave height trends? Wave height decadal variability is influenced by a combination of internal variability and forced variability caused by both anthropogenic and natural forcing. Using a statistical model to derive Hs from sea level pressure field and exploiting ERA-5 reanalysis data as well as 80 members of the Community Earth System Model v2 large ensemble, we show that, over the North Atlantic (NA), altimetry-based Hs trends are mostly caused by internal variability. This suggests that Hs changes computed over the satellite era are not yet controlled by anthropogenic climate change. Starting from 1993, the date of emergence, defined as the date when the forced signal becomes dominant over the internal variability, is later than 2050 for Hs in the NA. Plain Language Summary Satellite observations of significant wave height will soon reach 30 years of continuous record. Changes in significant wave height over this period can either be attributed to both anthropogenic or “natural” climate forcing or to the intrinsic variability of the climate system. In this article, we show that the intrinsic variability effect largely dominates the significant wave height changes in the North Atlantic (NA) over the 30 years of satellite observations. We further estimate that the significant wave height changes associated with anthropogenically forced climate change will become dominant over those due to the intrinsic variability after 2050 in most of the NA region.

Abstract: International audience; Plastics are associated with a worldwide pollution crisis, with strong negative impacts on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In marine environments, various organisms are colonizing plastic debris, but few studies have focused on fungal communities despite their non-trivial ecological roles in the marine environment. In this study, different types of plastics (biodegradable and conventional) immersed in marine natural environments and under laboratory controlled settings were collected after long-term colonization. Using a metabarcoding approach targeting two genetic markers, namely, the ITS2 region and the V4 hypervariable region of the 18S rRNA gene, we highlighted that fungal communities associated with plastic polymers were distinct from those found in the surrounding seawater. They also differed significantly between sampling locations and the nature of immersed polymers, indicating that fungal colonization was impacted by the sites and types of plastics, with clear dissimilarities between conventional and biodegradable polymers. Specifically for the conventional PVC polymer (Polyvinyl chloride), we also observed the successive stages of biofilm development and maturation after long-term immersion in seawater. A noticeable change in the fungal communities was observed around 30-40 days in natural settings, suggesting a colonization dynamic likely associated with a transition from biofilm formation to distinct communities likely associated with biofouling. Overall, this study strengthens the idea that the fungal kingdom is an integrated part of the "plastisphere".

Abstract: The DNA-glycosylase OGG1 oversees the detection and clearance of the 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG), which is the most frequent form of oxidized base in the genome. This lesion is deeply buried within the double-helix and its detection requires careful inspection of the bases by OGG1 via a mechanism that remains only partially understood. By analyzing OGG1 dynamics in the nucleus of living human cells, we demonstrate that the glycosylase constantly samples the DNA by rapidly alternating between diffusion within the nucleoplasm and short transits on the DNA. This sampling process, that we find to be tightly regulated by the conserved residue G245, is crucial for the rapid recruitment of OGG1 at oxidative lesions induced by laser micro-irradiation. Furthermore, we show that residues Y203, N149 and N150, while being all involved in early stages of 8-oxoG probing by OGG1 based on previous structural data, differentially regulate the sampling of the DNA and recruitment to oxidative lesions.

Abstract: International audience; A set of 16 chiral ruthenium complexes containing atropisomerically stable N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) ligands was synthesized from prochiral NHC precursors. After a rapid screening in asymmetric ring-opening-cross metathesis (AROCM), the most effective chiral atrop BIAN-NHC Ru-catalyst (up to 97:3 er) was then converted to a Z-selective catechodithiolate complex. The latter proved to be highly efficient in Z-selective AROCM of exo-norbornenes affording valuable trans-cyclopentanes with excellent Z-selectivity (>98%) and high enantioselectivity (up to 96.5:3.5 er).

Abstract: International audience; In the field of p-conjugated nanohoops, the size of the macrocycle has a huge impact on its structural characteristics, which in turn affect its electronic properties. In this work, we report the first experimental investigations linking the size of a nanohoop to its charge transport properties, a key property in organic electronics. We describe the synthesis and the study of the first example of cyclocarbazole possessing five constituting building units, namely [5]-cyclo-N-butyl-2,7-carbazole [5]C-Bu-Cbz. By comparison with a shorter analogue, [4]-cyclo-N-butyl-2,7-carbazole [4]C-Bu-Cbz, we detail the photophysical, electrochemical, morphological and charge transport properties, highlighting the key role played by the hoop size. Particularly, we show that the saturated field effect mobility of [5]C-Bu-Cbz is four times higher than that of its smaller analogue [4]C-Bu-Cbz (4.22 × 10-5vs 1.04 × 10-5 cm².V-1.s-1). However, the study of the other OFET characteristics (threshold voltage VTH and subthreshold slope SS) suggest that a small nanohoop is beneficial for a good organization of the molecules in thin films whereas a large one increases the density of structural defects, and hence of traps for the charge carriers. The present findings are of interest for the further development of nanohoops in electronics.

Abstract: International audience; Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in purely organic materials is an uncommon phenomenon of emission, which can be characterized by a long persistent luminescence after removal of the excitation source. In the recent years, RTP organic materials have received a considerable attention due to their high application potential in various advancing technologies, ranging from optoelectronic to biomedical applications. In parallel, many progresses have been achieved on the rationalization of this process and led to the emergence of innovative strategies aiming to achieve highest performances both in terms of phosphorescence efficiency and lifetime. While the topic is still on an ascendant development, the generation of circularly polarized phosphorescent (CPP) emission from purely organic molecules is by far much less explored and remains an impressive challenge. Still, the perspective of CPP materials appears as an interesting opportunity to answer several comprehensives issues existing in the field. In this article, we define, in a straightforward way, basic principles and key notions for the generation of RTP and CP luminescence (CPL) guiding the design toward CPP materials. After this brief insight, recent advances in the field of chiral organic RTP materials are discussed with an emphasis on their CP-RTP properties. Based on this development, the conclusion drawn allows establishing the next challenges and future opportunities standing in the field.

Abstract: The Fluid And White matter Suppression (FLAWS) MRI sequence allows for the acquisition of multiple T1-weighted contrasts in a single sequence acquisition. However, its acquisition time is prohibitive for use in clinical practice when the k-space is linearly downsampled and reconstructed using the Generalized Autocalibrating Partially Parallel Acquisition (GRAPPA) technique. This study proposes a FLAWS sequence optimization tailored to allow for the acquisition of FLAWS images with a Cartesian phyllotaxis k-space undersampling and compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction at 3T. The CS FLAWS sequence parameters were determined using a method previously employed to optimize FLAWS imaging at 1.5T and 7T. In-vivo experiments show that the proposed CS FLAWS optimization allows to reduce the FLAWS sequence acquisition time from 8 mins to 6 mins without decreasing the FLAWS image quality. In addition, this study demonstrates for the first time that T1-weighted imaging with low B1 sensitivity and T1 mapping can be performed with the FLAWS sequence at 3T for both GRAPPA and CS reconstructions. The FLAWS T1 mapping was validated using in-silico, in-vitro and in-vivo experiments with comparison against the inversion recovery turbo spin echo and MP2RAGE T1 mappings. These new results suggest that the recent advances in FLAWS imaging allow to combine the MP2RAGE imaging benefits (T1-weigthed imaging with low B1 sensitivity and T1 mapping) and with the previous version of FLAWS imaging benefits (multi T1-weighted contrast imaging) in a single 6 mins sequence acquisition.Graphical abstract

Abstract: IntroductionPrimary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by exocrine gland dysfunction. No therapeutic strategy is sufficient on its own for the management of dry mouth and therapeutic innovations are required.MethodsThis Predelfi study was a single-center, prospective, comparative, randomized, double-blind, cross-over controlled study with the primary objective of assessing the tolerance to and effectiveness of two adhesive biofilms (containing prebiotics and, sodium alginate, respectively) in patients with pSS and hyposialia (#NCT04206826 in ClinicalTrials.gov). Secondary objectives were to obtain initial data regarding the clinical effectiveness of such biofilms in the improvement of signs and symptoms related to dry mouth and potential changes in the oral microbiota. Ten pSS patients with pSS were included (9 females and 1 male) with a mean age of 58.1 ± 14.0 years.Results and discussionTolerance to the prebiotic and sodium alginate biofilms was assessed by the patients (visual analog scale [VAS] score 66.7 and 87.6, respectively) and the practitioner (90 and 100, respectively). The absolute changes in the VAS scores at the start and end of each treatment period highlighted an improvement in mouth dryness for the sodium alginate versus the prebiotic biofilm. The VAS scores for other parameters (mouth burning sensation; taste alteration; chewing; swallowing and speech difficulties) remained globally comparable between the two groups. Unstimulated salivary flow showed no changes regardless of the biofilm used. Regarding the oral microbiota, the sodium alginate biofilm increased the abundance of the Treponema genus, whereas the use of the prebiotic biofilm as the first treatment increased the abundance of the genera Veillonella and Prevotella. Nevertheless, the prebiotic biofilm appeared to stimulate “milder” genera with regard to periodontal infections. Furthermore, pre-treatment with the prebiotic biofilm prevented the emergence of the Treponema genus induced by subsequent treatment with the sodium alginate biofilm, suggesting a potential protective effect.

Abstract: International audience; Hoop-shaped pi-conjugated macrocycles constitute a new family of pi-conjugated systems displaying unique properties induced by their radially directed pi-orbitals. The electronic properties of these nanohoops are deeply dependent on their budding units and their size. We report herein the first size dependence study of [8]-, [12]- and [16] cyclo-para-phenylenes bridged by nitrogen atoms. The properties were elucidated by H-1 NMR, cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy (in solution and in thin film). Thus, this work reports one of the largest bridged nanohoops synthesized, namely [4]cyclo-para-9-ethylhexyl-2,7-diphenyl-carbazole [16]CPP4N, an analog of [16]CPP, which displays an alternation of four unbridged biphenylenes and four nitrogen bridged biphenylenes. Removing either all the unbridged phenylenes ([4]cyclo-para-9-ethylhexyl-carbazole [8]CPP4N, an analog of [8]CPP) or one budding unit ([3]cyclo-para-9-ethylhexyl-2,7-diphenyl-carbazole [12]CPP3N, an analog of [12]CPP) allows decreasing the size of the nanohoop with nevertheless drastically different consequences on the properties. This is what we aim at reporting in this work.

Abstract: International audience; Spin-crossover (SCO) materials exhibit thermal conversion of their electronic state from low (LS) to high (HS) spin state, which also involves both intra- and inter-molecular structural reorganisations within the crystal. The occurrence of coupled SCO and symmetry-breaking (SB), also responsible for structural reorganisations, is a current topic of interest because it can generate exotic behaviours such as unsymmetric hysteresis loops, stepwise evolution of the spin conversion, or sequences of phase transitions. Here we study the coupling and decoupling of SCO and SB during the thermal conversion of the prototypical [Fe(ptz)(6)](BF4)(2) compound diluted in the isostructural ruthenium host lattice [Ru(ptz)(6)](BF4)(2). We show that the [Ru0.35Fe0.65(ptz)(6)](BF4)(2) system undergoes a SB between the high-spin high symmetry (HShs) phase (R3 space group) and the low-spin low symmetry (LSls) phase (P1 space group). We present a structural analysis of the ferroelastic R3 -> P1 phase transition and highlight the structural SB signatures. We also study the metastable low-spin high symmetry (LShs) phase (R3 space group) reached upon fast cooling. In the framework of the Landau theory of phase transition adapted by Collet, and considering the elastic coupling between SCO and SB, we discuss the structural distortion between the HShs, LShs, and LSls phases and explain the metastable nature of the LShs phase.

Abstract: International audience; HYPOTHESIS: Ternary systems made of water, a water-miscible solvent, and hydrophobic solutes spontaneously produce metastable particles by the "Ouzo effect" and thermodynamically stable "Surfactant-Free Micro Emulsions" (SFME). However, the use of different analyses has led to a variability in the criteria to determine the boundaries of the Ouzo domain. We hypothesized that this could be clarified by investigating the stability and the physical state of the particles. EXPERIMENTS: We investigate four systems using both solid and liquid solutes and two different solvents, and achieved a careful investigation of their phase diagrams, using DLS, Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis, NMR, Multiple Light Scattering, electrophoretic mobility, and fluorescence analysis. FINDINGS: Our results evidence that the transition from the monophasic to the Ouzo domains does not coincide with the cloudiness curve, and that compositions in the Ouzo domain can look fully transparent, in contrast to what is often considered. This transition is best determined by stability analysis. The cloudiness curve corresponds to the formation of particles with a large size dispersity. In the Ouzo domain, we observed an exchange of solute between the continuous phase and solute particles swollen with solvent. In addition, the particles are stabilized against coalescence by their high negative charge.

Abstract: International audience; The first Z-stereoselective catechodithiolate ruthenium complexes containing cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene ligands are reported. Isolated in nearly quantitative yields or in situ generated, these catalysts demonstrated remarkable Z selectivity (Z/E ratio up to >98/2) in ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), ring-opening-cross metathesis (ROCM) and cross-metathesis (CM). Thanks to the efficient chiral HPLC resolution of racemic CAAC-complex precursors, optically pure dithiolated complexes were also synthesized allowing to produce enantioenriched Z-ROCM products in >99/1 Z/E with good levels of enantioselectivity.

Abstract: International audience; In this study we demonstrate that single-chain magnets (SCMs) can be assembled in gel phase and transferred intact on surface. We take advantage of a family of SCMs based on Tb(III) ions and nitronyl-nitroxides radicals functionalized with short alkyl chains known to form crystalline supramolecular nanotubes interacting with heptane acting as crystallizing solvent. When the radicals are functionalized with long aliphatic chains a robust gel is formed with similar structural and functional properties respect to its crystalline parent. Indeed, a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) study unambiguously demonstrates that the gel is made of supramolecular nanotubes: the high stability of the gel allows the determination from SAXS data of precise nanotube metrics such as diameter, helical pitch and monoclinic cell of the folded 2D crystal lattice along the tube direction. Additionally, static and dynamic magnetic investigations show the persistence of the SCM behavior in the metallogel. Last, on-surface gelation provides thick films as well as sub-monolayer deposits of supramolecular nanotubes on surface as evidenced by atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations. This paves the road toward magnetic materials and devices made of SCMs profiting of their isolation on surface as individual chains.

Abstract: International audience; The paper proposed a mosaic frequency selective surface (MFSS) which comprises of the integration between Koch fractal and a basic double hexagonal loop FSS. Through this integration, the bandwidth (BW) within the first bandstop and bandpass frequency responses achieved a wideband frequency response (fractional bandwidth (FBW) > 50%), while the BW of the second bandstop frequency response improved (FBW similar to 20%). The simulation process is conducted by using the CST software, and the FR4 substrate is used as the dielectric substrate for all of the proposed unit cells. With narrow trace width of the MFSS, the structural element can be further applied for optical transparency application with wideband filtering characteristics.

The application of continuous flow to olefin metathesis represents one of the most promising evolutions in the field at the interface of industrially relevant synthesis and reactor engineering, significantly improving some of the typical problems such as undesired self-reactions and ethylene-mediated catalyst de-activation. This review aims to provide a small survey covering the major aspects of those techniques which we hope may be of interest for the chemical community, but also those interested in catalysis, continuous processing, enabling technologies and reactor design.

Abstract: International audience; The quality assurance of synthetic CT (sCT) is crucial for safe clinical transfer to an MRI-only radiotherapy planning workflow. The aim of this work is to propose a population-based process assessing local errors in the generation of sCTs and their impact on dose distribution. For the analysis to be anatomically meaningful, a customized interpatient registration method brought the population data to the same coordinate system. Then, the voxel-based process was applied on two sCT generation methods: a bulk-density method and a generative adversarial network. The CT and MRI pairs of 39 patients treated by radiotherapy for prostate cancer were used for sCT generation, and 26 of them with delineated structures were selected for analysis. Voxel-wise errors in sCT compared to CT were assessed for image intensities and dose calculation, and a population-based statistical test was applied to identify the regions where discrepancies were significant. The cumulative histograms of the mean absolute dose error per volume of tissue were computed to give a quantitative indication of the error for each generation method. Accurate interpatient registration was achieved, with mean Dice scores higher than 0.91 for all organs. The proposed method produces three-dimensional maps that precisely show the location of the major discrepancies for both sCT generation methods, highlighting the heterogeneity of image and dose errors for sCT generation methods from MRI across the pelvic anatomy. Hence, this method provides additional information that will assist with both sCT development and quality control for MRI-based planning radiotherapy.

Abstract: All-metal 3D printing technologies are allowing the conception of new structures for different applications. This publication explores the potential of employing for the first time an all-metal 3D unit-cell topology to perform wide-angle impedance matching layers. A new equivalent circuit is derived for the oblique incidence, providing a good estimation of the cell response for the scanning range (theta = [0 degrees, 55 degrees]) in the main scanning planes for a linearly polarized radiated field. This analytical model is later used to develop a wide-angle impedance matching design methodology for a generic antenna. This methodology is tested in practice to match a phased array made of metallic horns at 18 GHz. Abstract: International audience; This paper concerns the protection of electro-optic and electromagnetic sensors embedded into a metallic cavity equipped with a window made of a non-electrically conducting material and optically transparent over the visible light and/or infra-red spectrum. In the presence of high intensity radiated fields, the cavity must be appropriately shielded to protect those sensors, this protection being detrimental to EM sensors sensitivity in their absence. We propose here an automatic and quasi-instantaneous activation of an electromagnetic shield printed on the window glass through the detection of the impinging electromagnetic field. The presented solution is based on thin micrometric mesh-metal film deposited on a glass substrate surrounded by a parallel arrangement of p-i-n diodes polarized by the EM field source itself. An experimental validation is performed using a reverberation chamber to generate the electromagnetic field stress while performing a shielding effectiveness measurement using the nested reverberation chamber test setup.

Abstract: Current agricultural practices facilitate emergence and spread of plant diseases through the wide use of monocultures. Host mixtures are a promising alternative for sustainable plant disease control. Their effectiveness can be partly explained by priming-induced cross-protection among plants. Priming occurs when plants are challenged with non-infective pathogen genotypes, resulting in increased resistance to subsequent infections by infective pathogen genotypes. We developed an epidemiological model to explore how mixing two distinct resistant varieties can reduce disease prevalence. We considered a pathogen population composed of three genotypes infecting either one or both varieties. We found that host mixtures should not contain an equal proportion of resistant plants, but a biased ratio (e.g. 80 : 20) to minimize disease prevalence. Counter-intuitively, the optimal ratio of resistant varieties should contain a lower proportion of the costliest resistance for the pathogen to break. This benefit is amplified by priming. This strategy also prevents the invasion of pathogens breaking all resistances.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics associated with photoinduced charge-transfer (CT) in cyanide-bridged Co-Fe Prussian blue analogue nanocrystals. In these coordination networks, the structural trapping of the photoinduced CT polaron involves local electronic and structural reorganizations. Femtosecond X-ray and optical absorption spectroscopies show that the local structural trapping process occurs on similar timescale for particles with 11 nm and 70 nm sizes. The local photoinduced spin transition, elongating the Co-N bonds and driving the (CoFeII)-Fe-III -> (CoFeIII)-Fe-II CT, activates coherent lattice torsion modes. The elastic deformation waves, launched by these bond elongations, drive macroscopic volume expansion and breathing of the particles. The timescale of this macroscopic deformation depends strongly on the size of the particle, which is more evidence of the multiscale nature of photoinduced phenomena in molecular materials.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a particular technique of reconfiguration of coupled line resonators. The reconfigurability is obtained by doping one or more parts of the silicon substrate located at the level of the coupled lines, thus creating one or more distributed diodes. The entire circuit goes through a co-design offering great flexibility and a considerable reduction in losses linked to the interconnection between the passive and active element. A first two-state resonator is presented, it has a resonance frequency close to 2.5 GHz in the OFF state and a frequency of 1.5 GHz in the ON state; the latter being adjustable as a function of the position of the doped zone. Abstract: International audience; The mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral region is of great interest to many areas of science and technology as it contains two important transparency windows (3-5 and 8-13 mu m) of the Earth's atmosphere and strong characteristic vibrational transitions displayed by a large number of molecules. Praseodymium (Pr3+) and dysprosium (Dy3+) ions feature characteristic transitions in the mid-IR and transmission range of chalcogenides-based materials spans a large part of the mid-IR. The combination of efficient waveguiding properties with mid-IR light emitters would therefore be a key enabler of the development of mid-IR sensors-on-a-chip for health, security and environmental applications. In this paper, RF magnetron co-sputtering is used to deposit a Dy3+/Pr-3 broken vertical bar-doped chalcogenides guiding layer based on the quaternary system composed of Ga, Ge, Sb and Se atoms on silica cladding layer. The fabrication process of straight ridge waveguides using photolithography and RIE/ICP dry etching is then described. Finally, Dy3+ and Pr3+ mid-IR guided photoluminescence around 2.5 and 4.5 mu m is demonstrated at room temperature using co-propagating pumping at telecommunication wavelengths ( respectively around 1.3 and 1.55 mu m).

Abstract: International audience; The phaseless characterization of antennas enables to reduce the cost and to ease the measurement of radiating systems, especially at high frequencies. The complex near field is retrieved from the acquisition of the antenna radiated field magnitude only, thanks to appropriate phase retrieval algorithms. Thus, a two-scan approach combined to a Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm has proven to lead to accurate phase retrievals. However, instead of measuring the field on two spherical surfaces of different radii as conventionally performed, we propose to measure the magnitude of the field on a single sphere but for two antenna positions. This new strategy is easier to implement in a number of measurement setups. Numerical and experimental validations in a commercial, arch-based, measurement system are shown and discussed.

Abstract: International audience; This study investigated the performance of a Mosaic Frequency Selective Surface (MFSS) structure for two different applications: optical transparency and absorber. The MFSS for optical transparency application is comprised of a polycarbonate substrate with permittivity, epsilon(r) of 2.9, and the MFSS for absorber application utilized a Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) substrate with epsilon(r) of 2.7. The MFSS unit cell is composed of a conductive metallic element design that integrates the Koch fractal and the double hexagonal loop for the optical transparency application. Meanwhile, the resistive MFSS unit cell with sheet resistivity of 100 Omega/sq is utilized for the absorber application. A Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio software is employed to carry out the calculation and frequency response analysis for both applications. Based on the results, it was concluded that the transparent MFSS yielded a wideband stopband and passband responses (fractional bandwidth (FBW) > 50%) with a low cross-polarization (-37 dB), and a wideband absorptivity response was achieved with thin MFSS absorber. In addition, the simulated and measured responses of the transparent MFSS achieved well-fitted correlations. The findings indicated that the proposed MFSS unit cell able to provide wideband response for both applications.

Abstract: International audience; This work focuses on the investigation of the degree of possible detuning that may be observed in the impedance response of ingestible antennas during the transition through the gastrointestinal tract. For this investigation, two fundamental antennas are used: a meandered dipole antenna and a meandered loop antenna. The antennas conform to the inner surface of the biocompatible capsule shell. They are optimized in spherical homogeneous time-averaged gastrointestinal phantoms to operate at 3 different frequencies of interest: 434 MHz, 1.4 GHz, and 2.4 GHz, resulting in 6 different designs in total. Next, the optimized antennas are simulated in 3 different phantoms, each mimicking the electromagnetic properties of one of the tissues in the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small intestine, and large intestine). The impedance response of each design in 4 different tissues is compared and discussed. The results show that the maximum shift in the operating frequency of the antennas is 7 MHz, indicating that the presence of the encapsulation layer makes the considered antennas robust against the changes in the electromagnetic properties encountered through the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract: International audience; Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a chronic liver disease that emerged in industrialized countries, can further progress into liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In the next decade, NASH is predicted to become the leading cause of liver transplantation, the only current interventional therapeutic option. Hepatocyte death, triggered by different death ligands, plays key role in its progression. Previously, we showed that the receptor-interacting protein kinase-1 (RIPK1) in hepatocytes exhibits a protective role in ligand-induced death. Now, to decipher the role of RIPK1 in NASH, Ripk1(LPC-KO) mice, deficient for RIPK1 only in liver parenchymal cells, and their wild-type littermates (Ripk1(fl/fl)) were fed for 3, 5, or 12 weeks with high-fat high-cholesterol diet (HFHCD). The main clinical signs of NASH were analyzed to compare the pathophysiological state established in mice. Most of the symptoms evolved similarly whatever the genotype, whether it was the increase in liver to body weight ratio, the steatosis grade or the worsening of liver damage revealed by serum transaminase levels. In parallel, inflammation markers followed the same kinetics with significant equivalent inductions of cytokines (hepatic mRNA levels and blood cytokine concentrations) and a main peak of hepatic infiltration of immune cells at 3 weeks of HFHCD. Despite this identical inflammatory response, more hepatic fibrosis was significantly evidenced at week 12 in Ripk1(LPC-KO) mice. This coincided with over-induced rates of transcripts of genes implied in fibrosis development (Tgfb1, Tgfbi, Timp1, and Timp2) in Ripk1(LPC-KO) animals. In conclusion, our results show that RIPK1 in hepatocyte limits the progression of liver fibrosis during NASH.

Abstract: Early embryo development is a dynamic process involving important molecular and structural changes leading to the embryonic genome activation (EGA) and early cell lineage differentiation. Our aim was to elucidate proteomic changes in bovine embryos developed in vivo. Eleven females were used as embryo donors and pools of embryos at the 4–6 cell, 8–12 cell, morula, compact morula and blastocyst stages were analyzed by nanoliquid chromatography coupled with label free quantitative mass spectrometry. A total of 2,757 proteins were identified, of which 1,950 were quantitatively analyzed. Principal component analysis of data showed a clear separation of embryo pools according to their developmental stage. The hierarchical clustering of differentially abundant proteins evidenced a first cluster of 626 proteins that increased in abundance during development and a second cluster of 400 proteins that decreased in abundance during development, with most significant changes at the time of EGA and blastocyst formation. The main pathways and processes overrepresented among upregulated proteins were RNA metabolism, protein translation and ribosome biogenesis, whereas Golgi vesicle transport and protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum were overrepresented among downregulated proteins. The pairwise comparison between stages allowed us to identify specific protein interaction networks and metabolic pathways at the time of EGA, morula compaction and blastocyst formation. This is the first comprehensive study of proteome dynamics in non-rodent mammalian embryos developed in vivo. These data provide a number of protein candidates that will be useful for further mechanistic and functional studies.

Abstract: International audience; Urine cytology is non-invasive, easy to collect, with medium sensitivity and a high specificity. It is an effective way to detect high-grade bladder cancer (BC), but it is less effective on low-grade BC because the rate of equivocal results is much higher. Recently, the fluorescent properties of plasma membranes of urothelial tumor cells (UTC) found in urine cytology have been shown to be useful in improving the early detection of BC. This phenomenon is called peri-membrane fluorescence (PMF). Based on previous studies that have identified the PMF on UTCs, the main objective was to characterize this phenomenon. For this study, a software was specially created to quantify the PMF of all tested cells and different treatments performed. PMF was not found to be a morphological and discriminating feature of UTCs, all cells in shape and not from urine show PMF. We were able to highlight the crucial role of plasma membrane integrity in the maintenance of PMF. Finally, it was found that the induction of a strong cellular stress induced a decrease in PMF, mimicking what was observed in non-tumor cells collected from urine. These results suggest that PMF is found in cells able to resist this stress, such as tumor cells.

Abstract: International audience; Three-dimensional (3D) halide perovskites have attracted enormous research interest, but the choice of the A-site cations is limited by the Goldschmidt tolerance factor. In order to accommodate cations that lie outside the acceptable range of the tolerance factor, low-dimensional structures usually form. To maintain the favorable 3D connection, the links among the metal-halide octahedra need to be rearranged to fit the large cations. This can result in a departure from the proper corner-sharing perovskite architectures and lead to distinctly different perovskitoid motifs with edge- and face-sharing. In this work, we report four new 3D bromide perovskitoids incorporating linear organic diammonium cations, A’Pb(2)Br(6) (A’ is a +2 cation). We propose a rule that can guide the further expansion of this class of compounds, analogous to the notion of Goldschmidt tolerance factor widely adopted for 3D AMX(3) perovskites. The fundamental building blocks in A’Pb(2)Br(6) consist of two edge-shared octahedra, which are then connected by corner-sharing to form a 3D network. Different compounds adopt different structural motifs, which can be transformed from one to another by symmetry operations. Electronic structure calculations suggest that they are direct bandgap semiconductors, with relatively large band dispersions created by octahedra connected by corner-sharing. They exhibit similar electronic band structures and dynamic lattice characteristics to the regular 3D AMX(3) perovskites. Structures with smaller Pb-Br-Pb angles and larger octahedra distortion exhibit broad photoluminescence at room temperature. The emerging structure-property relationships in these 3D perovskitoids set the foundation for designing and investigating these compounds for a variety of optoelectronic applications.
