Abstract

We present ARCAS (Automated Root Cause Analysis System), a diagnostic platform based on a Domain Specific Language (DSL) built for fast diagnostic implementation and low learning curve. Arcas is composed of a constellation of automated troubleshooting guides (Auto-TSGs) that can execute in parallel to detect issues using product telemetry and apply mitigation in near-real-time. The DSL is tailored specifically to ensure that subject matter experts can deliver highly curated and relevant Auto-TSGs in a short time without having to understand how they will interact with the rest of the diagnostic platform, thus reducing time-to-mitigate and saving crucial engineering cycles when they matter most. This contrasts with platforms like Datadog and New Relic, which primarily focus on monitoring and require manual intervention for mitigation. ARCAS uses a Large Language Model (LLM) to prioritize Auto-TSGs outputs and take appropriate actions, thus suppressing the costly requirement of understanding the general behavior of the system. 2. Biermann-battery driven magnetized collisionless shock precursors in laser produced plasmas

Abstract

This letter reports the first complete observation of magnetized collisionless shock precursors formed through the compression of Biermann-battery magnetic fields in laser produced plasmas. At OMEGA, lasers produce a supersonic CH plasma flow which is magnetized with Biermann-battery magnetic fields. The plasma flow collides with an unmagnetized hydrogen gas jet plasma to create a magnetized shock precursor. The situation where the flowing plasma carries the magnetic field is similar to the Venusian bow shock. Imaging 2$\omega$ Thomson scattering confirms that the interaction is collisionless and shows density and temperature jumps. Proton radiographs have regions of strong deflections and FLASH magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations show the presence of Biermann fields in the Thomson scattering region. Electrons are accelerated to energies of up to 100 keV in a power-law spectrum. OSIRIS particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, initialized with measured parameters, show the formation of a magnetized shock precursor and corroborate the experimental observables., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

3. Faith Believes, Hope Expects: The Impact of Calvin's Theology on the Mathematics of Chance

Abstract

This paper attributes the sudden emergence of mathematical probability and statistics in the second half of the seventeenth century to Calvin's Reformed theology. Calvin accommodated Epicurean chance with Stoic determinism and synthesised \emph{phronesis/prudentia}, founded personal experience and employed to deal with \emph{tyche/fortuna}, and \emph{episteme/scientia}, universal knowledge. This meant that matters of chance, which had previously been considered too particular for mathematical treatment, became part of \emph{episteme/scientia}. Clear evidence of the significance of Calvin in mathematics is in the facts that Huygens considered using the word 'hope' to describe mathematical expectation and French mathematics still uses \emph{esp\'erance} for mathematical expectation. Calvin asserted that Hope represented a universal, objective and indubitable idea making it characteristic of mathematics. The argument is built on a review of how the ideas of Hope, Faith and Prudence have evolved in European thought that highlights Calvin's innovations. The conclusion identifies contemporary issues in the application of mathematics in society that are illuminated in light of Calvin's doctrine.

We present a methodology for determining the relationship between the optimal control points of a power storage facility and a number of different factors including storage level and temperature. The interaction between different factors is considered to allow for the identification of a precise optimal control strategy to maximise the profits of a power storage facility under a variety of different conditions. 5. Scalable Bayesian Image-on-Scalar Regression for Population-Scale Neuroimaging Data Analysis

Abstract

Bayesian Image-on-Scalar Regression (ISR) offers significant advantages for neuroimaging data analysis, including flexibility and the ability to quantify uncertainty. However, its application to large-scale imaging datasets, such as found in the UK Biobank, is hindered by the computational demands of traditional posterior computation methods, as well as the challenge of individual-specific brain masks that deviate from the common mask typically used in standard ISR approaches. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel Bayesian ISR model that is scalable and accommodates inconsistent brain masks across subjects in large-scale imaging studies. Our model leverages Gaussian process priors and integrates salience area indicators to facilitate ISR. We develop a cutting-edge scalable posterior computation algorithm that employs stochastic gradient Langevin dynamics coupled with memory mapping techniques, ensuring that computation time scales linearly with subsample size and memory usage is constrained only by the batch size. Our approach uniquely enables direct spatial posterior inferences on brain activation regions. The efficacy of our method is demonstrated through simulations and analysis of the UK Biobank task fMRI data, encompassing 38,639 subjects and over 120,000 voxels per image, showing that it can achieve a speed increase of 4 to 11 times and enhance statistical power by 8% to 18% compared to traditional Gibbs sampling with zero-imputation in various simulation scenarios.

6. Scalable Scalar-on-Image Cortical Surface Regression with a Relaxed-Thresholded Gaussian Process Prior

Abstract

In addressing the challenge of analysing the large-scale Adolescent Brain Cognition Development (ABCD) fMRI dataset, involving over 5,000 subjects and extensive neuroimaging data, we propose a scalable Bayesian scalar-on-image regression model for computational feasibility and efficiency. Our model employs a relaxed-thresholded Gaussian process (RTGP), integrating piecewise-smooth, sparse, and continuous functions capable of both hard- and soft-thresholding. This approach introduces additional flexibility in feature selection in scalar-on-image regression and leads to scalable posterior computation by adopting a variational approximation and utilising the Karhunen-Lo\`eve expansion for Gaussian processes. This advancement substantially reduces the computational costs in vertex-wise analysis of cortical surface data in large-scale Bayesian spatial models. The model's parameter estimation and prediction accuracy and feature selection performance are validated through extensive simulation studies and an application to the ABCD study. Here, we perform regression analysis correlating intelligence scores with task-based functional MRI data, taking into account confounding factors including age, sex, and parental education level. Abstract

The EGS Collab project performed well-monitored rock stimulation and flow tests at the 10-m scale in an underground research laboratory to inform challenges in implementing enhanced geothermal system (EGS) technology. This project, supported by the US Department of Energy, gathered data and observations from the field tests and compared these to simulation results to understand processes and to build confidence in numerical modeling of the processes. The project consisted of 3 Experiments, each comprising test and testbed design, many individual tests, numerical simulation, and analysis. The Experiments were performed in two deep underground testbeds at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota. Field experiments are now complete, significant data sets have been collected and analyzed, and some analysis continues. Experiments using underground test facilities have many advantages in that they allow:•Three-dimensional characterization of the stimulated volume by complementary geophysical methods surrounding the experiment•Using techniques that are currently not applicable under geothermal condition to provide processes insight •Comprehensive tracer testing and detailed characterization of complex fluid movements•Understanding the geometry of the stimulated network at the meso-scale and its implications for effective fracture surface area, rock block size, and heat exchange.Underground testing has its own set of complications, however, which affect the ability to perform tests as desired and affect the experiment results. Included here are the inability to flow at desired injection rates due to stress gradients caused by drift cooling, and the need to strongly limit induced seismicity because the distance to people and equipment.Experiment 1 examined hydraulic fracturing at a depth of 1.5 km in a well-characterized phyllite. Eight subhorizontal boreholes were used in this Experiment. Geophysical monitoring instrumentation was deployed in six boreholes to monitor stimulation events and flow tests. The other two boreholes were used to perform and carefully measure water injection and production. More than a dozen stimulations and nearly one year of flow tests in the testbed were performed. Detailed observations of processes occurring during stimulation and dynamic flow tests were collected and analyzed. Flow tests using ambient-temperature and chilled water were performed with intermittent tracer tests to examine system behavior. We achieved adaptive control of the tests using close monitoring of rapidly disseminated data and near-real-time simulation. Numerical simulation was critical in answering key experimental design questions, forecasting fracture behavior, and analyzing results. We were successful in performing many simulations in near-real-time in conjunction with the field experiments, with more detailed simulations performed later. Experiment 2 was intended to examine hydraulic shearing of natural fractures at a depth of 1.25 km in amphibolite. The stresses, rock type, and fracture conditions are different than in Experiment 1. The testbed consists of 9 boreholes, in addition to 2 exploratory characterization boreholes. Four boreholes drilled as two fans of 2 monitoring holes contained grouted-in monitoring sensors. The remaining five open boreholes drilled in a five-spot pattern were adaptively used for injection, production, and monitoring. Approximately five fracture set orientations were encountered in the testbed along with a low-stress rhyolite sill at 35 m below the access drift in exploratory well TV4100. The testbed was designed to optimize the potential for shear stimulation while also avoiding the low-stress rhyolite. Experiment 2 focused on stimulating a fracture in the most likely orientation to shear, however shear stimulation did not occur probably due to cementation from natural secondary mineralization. Other fracture sets encountered were also cemented and had orientations less likely to shear.Experiment 3 consisted of several stimulations in the same testbed as Experiment 2 allowing different stimulation approaches including ramped-rate injection, rapid injection, and oscillating-pressure injection. Ultimately these methods created hydraulic fractures, one of which was used for a medium-duration cold water injection test. The major findings of the EGS Collab Project include: 1.Significant shear stimulation did not occur during our stimulation attempts. Shear stimulation may occur but under a limited set of conditions not encountered.2.Our stimulations resulted in hydraulic fractures that required hydraulic propping. Pumping at pressures exceeding the minimum principal stress may not be feasible in an enhanced geothermal system.3.The systems we generated were complex hydraulic fracture/natural fracture systems, and these systems changed over time in response to applied pressures and flowrates and to unknown stimuli.4.The project attempted alternative stimulation methods, which did not provide significant flow improvement. 5.Thermal breakthrough was not achieved as designed, most likely because flow to production boreholes was not adequate. 6.The combination of geophysical tools used provided excellent understanding of many important processes. 7.Microearthquakes (MEQs) didn’t necessarily identify flow paths.8.Engineering tools bounding expected seismicity are needed.This report provides a summary of tests and analyses performed for EGS Collab Experiment 2 (Shear Stimulation in Testbed 2) and Experiment 3 (Alternative Stimulation methods). Much of the EGS Collab work has been published in journals and conference papers, presented in conferences, included in written reports, and submitted in data sets to the Geothermal Data Repository (GDR). The entirety of these written works is included as an appendix to this report, and this report serves as a summary and framework pointing to these published papers, presentations, and reports.

8. Plugging the leaks: antibiotic resistance at human-animal interfaces in low-resource settings.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. International efforts to curb resistance have largely focused on drug development and limiting unnecessary antibiotic use. However, in areas where water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure is lacking, we propose that bacterial flow between humans and animals can exacerbate the emergence and spread of resistant pathogens. Here, we describe the consequences of poor environmental controls by comparing mobile resistance elements among Escherichia coli recovered from humans and meat in Cambodia, a middle-income country with substantial human-animal connectivity and unregulated antibiotic use. We identified identical mobile resistance elements and a conserved transposon region that were widely dispersed in both humans and animals, a phenomenon rarely observed in high-income settings. Our findings indicate that plugging leaks at human-animal interfaces should be a critical part of addressing antibiotic resistance in low- and especially middle-income countries.

12. Bayesian inference for group-level cortical surface image-on-scalar-regression with Gaussian process priors

Abstract

In regression-based analyses of group-level neuroimage data researchers typically fit a series of marginal general linear models to image outcomes at each spatially-referenced pixel. Spatial regularization of effects of interest is usually induced indirectly by applying spatial smoothing to the data during preprocessing. While this procedure often works well, resulting inference can be poorly calibrated. Spatial modeling of effects of interest leads to more powerful analyses, however the number of locations in a typical neuroimage can preclude standard computation with explicitly spatial models. Here we contribute a Bayesian spatial regression model for group-level neuroimaging analyses. We induce regularization of spatially varying regression coefficient functions through Gaussian process priors. When combined with a simple nonstationary model for the error process, our prior hierarchy can lead to more data-adaptive smoothing than standard methods. We achieve computational tractability through Vecchia approximation of our prior which, critically, can be constructed for a wide class of spatial correlation functions and results in prior models that retain full spatial rank. We outline several ways to work with our model in practice and compare performance against standard vertex-wise analyses. Finally we illustrate our method in an analysis of cortical surface fMRI task contrast data from a large cohort of children enrolled in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

13. U.S. Visa and Immigration Policy Challenges: Explanations for Faculty Perceptions and Intent to Leave

Abstract

United States (US) immigration policies have increasingly focused on national security resulting in universities experiencing declines in international student applications, constraints on international scholar employment, and complications facilitating international research collaborations. The COVID-19 pandemic brought additional travel restrictions, embassy closures, and health and safety concerns that exacerbated these challenges. Science mobility is critical for science education, training, competitiveness, and innovation. Using a representative sample of US and foreign-born scientists in three STEM fields, we explore how recent visa and immigration policies have shaped research collaborations, work with students and postdoctoral scholars, and intentions to leave. We use descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and logistic regression and find academic scientists report disruptions from visa and immigration policies; negative impacts of immigration policies on US higher education; negative effects on recruitment and retention of international trainees; and increased intentions to leave the US driven by negative perceptions of immigration policy.

14. Risk factors for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli carriage among children in a food animal-producing region of Ecuador: A repeated measures observational study.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be driven by human-animal-environment interactions, especially in regions with limited restrictions on antibiotic use, widespread food animal production, and free-roaming domestic animals. In this study, we aimed to identify risk factors related to commercial food animal production, small-scale or backyard food animal production, domestic animal ownership, and practices related to animal handling, waste disposal, and antibiotic use in Ecuadorian communities. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a repeated measures study from 2018 to 2021 in 7 semirural parishes of Quito, Ecuador to identify determinants of third-generation cephalosporin-resistant E. coli (3GCR-EC) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase E. coli (ESBL-EC) in children. We collected 1,699 fecal samples from 600 children and 1,871 domestic animal fecal samples from 376 of the same households at up to 5 time points per household over the 3-year study period. We used multivariable log-binomial regression models to estimate relative risks (RR) of 3GCR-EC and ESBL-EC carriage, adjusting for child sex and age, caregiver education, household wealth, and recent child antibiotic use. Risk factors for 3GCR-EC included living within 5 km of more than 5 commercial food animal operations (RR: 1.26; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10, 1.45; p-value: 0.001), household pig ownership (RR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.48; p-value: 0.030) and child pet contact (RR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.39; p-value: 0.001). Risk factors for ESBL-EC were dog ownership (RR: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.83; p-value: 0.053), child pet contact (RR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.10, 2.16; p-value: 0.012), and placing animal feces on household land/crops (RR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.09, 2.46; p-value: 0.019). The primary limitations of this study are the use of proxy and self-reported exposure measures and the use of a single beta-lactamase drug (ceftazidime with clavulanic acid) in combination disk diffusion tests for ESBL confirmation, potentially underestimating phenotypic ESBL production among cephalosporin-resistant E. coli isolates. To improve ESBL determination, it is recommended to use 2 combination disk diffusion tests (ceftazidime with clavulanic acid and cefotaxime with clavulanic acid) for ESBL confirmatory testing. Future studies should also characterize transmission pathways by assessing antibiotic resistance in commercial food animals and environmental reservoirs. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we observed an increase in enteric colonization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria among children with exposures to domestic animals and their waste in the household environment and children living in areas with a higher density of commercial food animal production operations.

Abstract

The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had significant impacts on health systems, population dynamics, public health awareness, and antibiotic stewardship, which could affect antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) emergence and transmission. In this study, we aimed to compare knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of antibiotic use and ARB carriage in Ecuadorian communities before versus after the COVID-19 pandemic began. We leveraged data collected for a repeated measures observational study of third-generation cephalosporin-resistant E. coli (3GCR-EC) carriage among children in semi-rural communities in Quito, Ecuador between July 2018 and September 2021. We included 241 households that participated in surveys and child stool sample collection in 2019, before the pandemic, and in 2021, after the pandemic began. We estimated adjusted Prevalence Ratios (aPR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) using logistic and Poisson regression models. Child antibiotic use in the last 3 months declined from 17% pre-pandemic to 5% in 2021 (aPR: 0.30; 95% CI 0.15, 0.61) and 3GCR-EC carriage among children declined from 40 to 23% (aPR: 0.48; 95% CI 0.32, 0.73). Multi-drug resistance declined from 86 to 70% (aPR: 0.32; 95% CI 0.13; 0.79), the average number of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) per 3GCR-EC isolate declined from 9.9 to 7.8 (aPR of 0.79; 95% CI 0.65, 0.96), and the diversity of ARGs was lower in 2021. In the context of Ecuador, where COVID-19 prevention and control measures were strictly enforced after its major cities experienced some of the worlds the highest mortality rates from SARS-CoV-2 infections, antibiotic use and ARB carriage declined in semi-rural communities of Quito from 2019 to 2021.

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Meniscal and chondral damage is common in the patient undergoing revision anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. PURPOSE: To determine if meniscal and/or articular cartilage pathology at the time of revision ACL surgery significantly influences a patients outcome at 6-year follow-up. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Patients undergoing revision ACL reconstruction were prospectively enrolled between 2006 and 2011. Data collection included baseline demographics, surgical technique, pathology, treatment, and scores from 4 validated patient-reported outcome instruments: International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and Marx Activity Rating Scale. Patients were followed up at 6 years and asked to complete the identical set of outcome instruments. Regression analysis assessed the meniscal and articular cartilage pathology risk factors for clinical outcomes 6 years after revision ACL reconstruction. RESULTS: An overall 1234 patients were enrolled (716 males, 58%; median age, 26 years). Surgeons reported the pathology at the time of revision surgery in the medial meniscus (45%), lateral meniscus (36%), medial femoral condyle (43%), lateral femoral condyle (29%), medial tibial plateau (11%), lateral tibial plateau (17%), patella (30%), and trochlea (21%). Six-year follow-up was obtained on 79% of the sample (980/1234). Meniscal pathology and articular cartilage pathology (medial femoral condyle, lateral femoral condyle, lateral tibial plateau, trochlea, and patella) were significant drivers of poorer patient-reported outcomes at 6 years (IKDC, KOOS, WOMAC, and Marx). The most consistent factors driving outcomes were having a medial meniscal excision (either before or at the time of revision surgery) and patellofemoral articular cartilage pathology. Six-year Marx activity levels were negatively affected by having either a repair/excision of the medial meniscus (odds ratio range, 1.45-1.72; P≤ .04) or grade 3-4 patellar chondrosis (odds ratio, 1.72; P = .04). Meniscal pathology occurring before the index revision surgery negatively affected scores on all KOOS subscales except for sports/recreation (P < .05). Articular cartilage pathology significantly impaired all KOOS subscale scores (P < .05). Lower baseline outcome scores, higher body mass index, being a smoker, and incurring subsequent surgery all significantly increased the odds of reporting poorer clinical outcomes at 6 years. CONCLUSION: Meniscal and chondral pathology at the time of revision ACL reconstruction has continued significant detrimental effects on patient-reported outcomes at 6 years after revision surgery.

Abstract

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract

BackgroundLytic or malpositioned tunnels may require bone grafting during revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (rACLR) surgery. Patient characteristics and effects of grafting on outcomes after rACLR are not well described.PurposeTo describe preoperative characteristics, intraoperative findings, and 2-year outcomes for patients with rACLR undergoing bone grafting procedures compared with patients with rACLR without grafting.Study designCohort study; Level of evidence, 3.MethodsA total of 1234 patients who underwent rACLR were prospectively enrolled between 2006 and 2011. Baseline revision and 2-year characteristics, surgical technique, pathology, treatment, and patient-reported outcome instruments (International Knee Documentation Committee [IKDC], Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score [KOOS], Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, and Marx Activity Rating Scale [Marx]) were collected, as well as subsequent surgery information, if applicable. The chi-square and analysis of variance tests were used to compare group characteristics.ResultsA total of 159 patients (13%) underwent tunnel grafting-64 (5%) patients underwent 1-stage and 95 (8%) underwent 2-stage grafting. Grafting was isolated to the femur in 31 (2.5%) patients, the tibia in 40 (3%) patients, and combined in 88 patients (7%). Baseline KOOS Quality of Life (QoL) and Marx activity scores were significantly lower in the 2-stage group compared with the no bone grafting group (P≤ .001). Patients who required 2-stage grafting had more previous ACLRs (P < .001) and were less likely to have received a bone-patellar tendon-bone or a soft tissue autograft at primary ACLR procedure (P≤ .021) compared with the no bone grafting group. For current rACLR, patients undergoing either 1-stage or 2-stage bone grafting were more likely to receive a bone-patellar tendon-bone allograft (P≤ .008) and less likely to receive a soft tissue autograft (P≤ .003) compared with the no bone grafting group. At 2-year follow-up of 1052 (85%) patients, we found inferior outcomes in the 2-stage bone grafting group (IKDC score = 68; KOOS QoL score = 44; KOOS Sport/Recreation score = 65; and Marx activity score = 3) compared with the no bone grafting group (IKDC score = 77; KOOS QoL score = 63; KOOS Sport/Recreation score = 75; and Marx activity score = 7) (P≤ .01). The 1-stage bone graft group did not significantly differ compared with the no bone grafting group.ConclusionTunnel bone grafting was performed in 13% of our rACLR cohort, with 8% undergoing 2-stage surgery. Patients treated with 2-stage grafting had inferior baseline and 2-year patient-reported outcomes and activity levels compared with patients not undergoing bone grafting. Patients treated with 1-stage grafting had similar baseline and 2-year patient-reported outcomes and activity levels compared with patients not undergoing bone grafting.

Abstract

We prospectively investigated the performance of the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) ligand 68Ga-PSMA-11 for detecting prostate adenocarcinoma in patients with elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) after initial therapy. Methods:68Ga-PSMA-11 hybrid PET was performed on 2,005 patients at the time of biochemically recurrent prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy (RP) (50.8%), definitive radiation therapy (RT) (19.7%), or RP with postoperative RT (PORT) (29.6%). The presence of prostate cancer was assessed qualitatively (detection rate = positivity rate) and quantitatively on a per-patient and per-region basis, creating a disease burden estimate from the presence or absence of local (prostate/prostate bed), nodal (N1: pelvis), and distant metastatic (M1: distant soft tissue and bone) disease. The primary study endpoint was the positive predictive value (PPV) of 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT confirmed by histopathology. 34. Sources of HIV information and women's HIV knowledge in Southwest Sumba Indonesia: a cross-sectional study with mediation analysis.

Abstract

Background: Despite multiple years of government HIV educational efforts, the growing trend of new cases among women in Indonesia runs parallel with their seemingly overall lack of comprehensive knowledge about HIV. A major prevention challenge for the Indonesian government lies in delivering HIV prevention education across the world's largest archipelago. This study investigates comprehensive HIV knowledge among reproductive-age women in Southwest Sumba, Indonesia, and the sources through which they report having learned about HIV along with potential mediators of the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and HIV knowledge. Methods: This cross-sectional study using convenience sampling recruited 159 married women ages 15–49 years old living in 4 selected church parishes in Southwest Sumba on March 12–20, 2023. The HIV Knowledge Questionnaire-18 and items from the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (24 total) measured the women's comprehensive knowledge about HIV. Additional items asked about sources through which the women had received information about HIV. One-way ANOVA examined differences in the level of HIV knowledge obtained through one or more information sources (healthcare providers, media, schools, and social network members). Mediation analysis investigated potential mediators of the relationship between SES and HIV knowledge. Results: Comprehensive HIV knowledge scores ranged from 0 to 21 (mean = 10.6). About 65% of the 159 women could only correctly answer 50% or less of the questions. Most incorrect answers pertained either to Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission (MTCT) or misconceptions about the virus. One-way ANOVA revealed that the mean of HIV knowledge increased as the number of informational sources increased (p <.001). Structural Equation Modelling found that social network members, healthcare providers, and the media all had significant direct effects on HIV knowledge. In addition, an indirect positive relationship between SES and comprehensive HIV knowledge was mediated by information obtained through the media and marginally through healthcare providers. Conclusions: The study's results suggest that more extensive in-depth HIV education is greatly needed to help prevent transmission among women living in small and outlying islands in Indonesia. Wider promotion of HIV information through the media and more intensively through local healthcare providers appears a promising and likely effective means to reach these women. Abstract

Objective: The potential influence (i.e., impact rate) of catch‐and‐release fisheries on wild steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss is poorly understood and is a function of the abundance of wild fish, how many fish are encountered by anglers (i.e., encounter rate), and the mortality of fish that are caught and released. In Idaho, estimates of wild steelhead encounter rates have been derived using the number of wild and hatchery steelhead passing Lower Granite Dam, the number of hatchery steelhead harvested, and the number of hatchery steelhead caught and released. The method includes assumptions that hatchery and wild steelhead have equal encounter rates and catch‐and‐release mortality is 5% for wild steelhead. Here, we investigated wild and hatchery steelhead encounter rates by anglers, estimated catch‐and‐release mortality, and concatenated both aspects to examine how existing recreational steelhead fisheries influence wild steelhead mortality. Methods: We sampled, tagged, and released 1,251 spawn‐year 2020 (SY2020) and 1,956 spawn‐year 2021 (SY2021) adult steelhead at Lower Granite Dam with T‐bar anchor tags and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags to estimate steelhead encounter rates and catch‐and‐release mortality. Differences in survival of caught steelhead and those not reported as caught were evaluated using detections at various locations (e.g., PIT arrays, weirs). Result: Estimated encounter rates were 43.7% (95% credible interval; 28.2%, 100.0%) for wild fish and 46.7% (29.6%, 100.0%) for adipose‐clipped fish in SY2020. In SY2021, encounter rates were 47.2% (32.4%, 100.0%) for wild fish and 52.3% (37.1%, 100.0%) for adipose‐clipped fish. Based on detections of caught fish and those not reported as caught, catch‐and‐release mortality of wild steelhead was estimated to be 1.6% (0.0%, 5.2%). Wild steelhead impact rates were 0.7% (0.0%, 2.7%) in SY2020 and 0.7% (0.0%, 2.8%) in SY2021. Conclusion: Estimated rates of impact on wild steelhead were consistent and low across years despite major differences in the structure of the fisheries. Our results suggest assuming that encounter rates are equal between hatchery and wild steelhead, and that steelhead catch‐and‐release mortality is 5%, will likely lead to a conservative estimate of the wild steelhead impact occurring from catch‐and‐release fisheries.
