Accurate decoding of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in the shortest possible time is essential for the realization of a high-performance brain-computer interface (BCI) system based on the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP). However, the degradation of decoding performance of short-length EEG signals is often unavoidable due to the reduced information, which hinders the development of BCI systems in real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a relaxed matching knowledge distillation (RMKD) method to transfer both feature-level and logit-level knowledge in a relaxed manner to improve the decoding performance of short-length EEG signals. Specifically, the long-length EEG signals and short-length EEG signals are decoded into the frequency representation by the teacher and student models, respectively. At the feature-level, the frequency-masked generation distillation is designed to improve the representation ability of student features by forcing the randomly masked student features to generate full teacher features. At the logit-level, the non-target class knowledge distillation and the inter-class relation distillation are combined to mitigate loss conflicts by imitating the distribution of non-target classes and preserve the inter-class relation in the prediction vectors of the teacher and student models. We conduct comprehensive experiments on two public SSVEP datasets in the subject-independent scenario with six different signal lengths. Joint source channel anytime coding (JSCAC) is a kind of joint source channel coding (JSCC) systems based on the causal spatially coupled coding and joint expanding window decoding (JEWD) techniques. JSCAC demonstrates greatly improved error correction performance, as well as higher decoding complexity. This work proposes a joint hybrid window decoding (JHWD) algorithm for JSCAC systems, aiming to reduce the decoding complexity while maintaining comparable error correction performance with the state of the art. Unlike the traditional JEWD technique and its variants, the proposed JHWD algorithm utilizes a hybrid window structure. It achieves this by implementing adaptive local expanding window decoding in the sliding window region, guided by syndrome-check-based detection. The hybrid window decoding characteristics of the proposed JHWD algorithm can both effectively reduce the decoding complexity caused by window expanding, and also mitigate the error propagation caused by window sliding. An improved density evolution algorithm is proposed for the asymptotic performance analysis of the proposed JHWD algorithm. Both the analytical and simulation results indicate that the proposed JHWD decoding scheme is a good low-complexity implementation option for JSCAC systems, which is also suitable for other JSCC systems with the spatially coupled coding structure.

Background: Telehealth interventions where providers offer support and coaching to patients with chronic conditions such as heart failure (HF) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are effective in improving health outcomes. However, the understanding of the content and structure of these interactions and how they relate to health care utilization remains incomplete., Objective: This study aimed to characterize the content and structure of telecare conversations on lifestyle management for patients with HF and investigate how these conversations relate to health care utilization., Methods: We leveraged real-world data from 50 patients with HF enrolled in a postdischarge telehealth program, with the primary intervention comprising a series of telephone calls from nurse telecarers over a 12-month period. For the full cohort, we transcribed 729 English-language calls and annotated conversation topics. For a subcohort (25 patients with both HF and T2DM), we annotated lifestyle management content with fine-grained dialogue acts describing typical conversational structures. For each patient, we identified calls with unusually high ratios of utterances on lifestyle management as lifestyle-focused calls. We further extracted structured data for inpatient admissions from 6 months before to 6 months after the intervention period. First, to understand conversational structures and content of lifestyle-focused calls, we compared the number of utterances, dialogue acts, and symptom attributes in lifestyle-focused calls to those in calls containing but not focused on lifestyle management. Second, to understand the perspectives of nurse telecarers on these calls, we conducted an expert evaluation where 2 nurse telecarers judged levels of concern and follow-up actions for lifestyle-focused and other calls (not focused on lifestyle management content). Finally, we assessed how the number of lifestyle-focused calls relates to the number of admissions, and to the average length of stay per admission., Results: In comparative analyses, lifestyle-focused calls had significantly fewer utterances (P=.01) and more dialogue acts (P adj =.005) than calls containing but not focused on lifestyle management. Lifestyle-focused calls did not contain deeper discussions on clinical symptoms. These findings indicate that lifestyle-focused calls entail short, intense discussions with greater emphasis on understanding patient experience and coaching than on clinical content. In the expert evaluation, nurse telecarers identified 24.2% (29/120) of calls assessed as concerning enough for follow-up. For these 29 calls, nurse telecarers were more attuned to concerns about symptoms and vitals (19/29, 65.5%) than lifestyle management concerns (4/29, 13.8%). The number of lifestyle-focused calls a patient had was modestly (but not significantly) associated with a lower average length of stay for inpatient admissions (Spearman ρ=-0.30; P adj =.06), but not with the number of admissions (Spearman ρ=-0.03; P adj =.84)., Conclusions: Our approach and findings offer novel perspectives on the content, structure, and clinical associations of telehealth conversations on lifestyle management for patients with HF. Underground telecommunication cables are highly susceptible to damage from excavation activities. Preventing accidental damage to underground telecommunication cables is critical and necessary. In this study, we present field trial results of monitoring excavation activities near underground fiber cables using an intensity-based phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (φ-OTDR). The reasons for choosing intensity-based φ-OTDR for excavation monitoring are presented and analyzed. The vibration signals generated by four typical individual excavation events, i.e., cutting, hammering, digging, and tamping at five different field trial sites, as well as five different mixed events in the fifth field trial site were investigated. The findings indicate that various types of events can generate vibration signals with different features. Typically, fundamental peak frequencies of cutting, hammering and tamping events ranged from 30 to 40 Hz, 11 to 15 Hz, and 30 to 40 Hz, respectively. Digging events, on the other hand, presented a broadband frequency spectrum without a distinct peak frequency. Moreover, due to differences in environmental conditions, even identical excavation events conducted with the same machine may also generate vibration signals with different characteristics. The diverse field trial results presented offer valuable insights for both research and the practical implementation of excavation monitoring techniques for underground cables.

This study addresses the limitation of traditional non-destructive testing methods in real-time corrosion monitoring of pipe elbows by proposing the utilization of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors, renowned for their resilience in harsh environments. However, the current mathematical relationship model for strain representation of elbow corrosion is still lacking. This paper develops a finite element model to scrutinize the strain changes in the elbow due to corrosion under hydrostatic pressure and bending loads. To mitigate temperature loading effects, the corrosion degree is evaluated through the disparity between hoop and axial strains. Simulation outcomes reveal that, under hydrostatic pressure, the strain difference exhibits minimal changes with the increase in corrosion degree, while under bending moment loading, the strain difference escalates proportionally with corrosion progression. Consequently, strain induced by bending moment loading solely characterizes the corrosion degree. Moreover, the optimal placement for FBG sensors is identified at the extrados of the pipe elbow, where strain is most prominent. These insights enhance comprehension of strain-corrosion dynamics in pipe elbows, offering valuable guidance for developing an FBG-based monitoring system for real-time corrosion tracking and predictive maintenance of pipeline infrastructures.

Automated and accurate classification of pneumonia plays a crucial role in improving the performance of computer-aided diagnosis systems for chest X-ray images. Nevertheless, it is a challenging task due to the difficulty of learning the complex structure information of lung abnormality from chest X-ray images. In this paper, we propose a multi-view aggregation network with Transformer (TransMVAN) for pneumonia classification in chest X-ray images. Specifically, we propose to incorporate the knowledge from glance and focus views to enrich the feature representation of lung abnormality. Moreover, to capture the complex relationships among different lung regions, we propose a bi-directional multi-scale vision Transformer (biMSVT), with which the informative messages between different lung regions are propagated through two directions. In addition, we also propose a gated multi-view aggregation (GMVA) to adaptively select the feature information from glance and focus views for further performance enhancement of pneumonia diagnosis. Our proposed method achieves AUCs of 0.9645 and 0.9550 for pneumonia classification on two different chest X-ray image datasets. In addition, it achieves an AUC of 0.9761 for evaluating positive and negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Furthermore, our proposed method also attains an AUC of 0.9741 for classifying non-COVID-19 pneumonia, COVID-19 pneumonia, and normal cases. Objective: To predict ALS progression with varying observation and prediction window lengths, using machine learning (ML)., Methods: We used demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters from 5030 patients in the Pooled Resource Open-Access ALS Clinical Trials (PRO-ACT) database to model ALS disease progression as fast (at least 1.5 points decline in ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R) per month) or non-fast, using Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Bayesian Long Short Term Memory (BLSTM). XGBoost identified predictors of progression while BLSTM provided a confidence level for each prediction., Results: ML models achieved area under receiver-operating-characteristics curve (AUROC) of 0.570-0.748 and were non-inferior to clinician assessments. Performance was similar with observation lengths of a single visit, 3, 6, or 12 months and on a holdout validation dataset, but was better for longer prediction lengths. 21 important predictors were identified, with the top 3 being days since disease onset, past ALSFRS-R and forced vital capacity. Nonstandard predictors included phosphorus, chloride and albumin. BLSTM demonstrated higher performance for the samples about which it was most confident. Patient screening by models may reduce hypothetical Phase II/III clinical trial sizes by 18.3%., Conclusion: Similar accuracies across ML models using different observation lengths suggest that a clinical trial observation period could be shortened to a single visit and clinical trial sizes reduced. Confidence levels provided by BLSTM gave additional information on the trustworthiness of predictions, which could aid decision-making. The identified predictors of ALS progression are potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for further research.

Batteries play a crucial role as energy storage devices across various industries. However, achieving high performance often comes at the cost of safety. Continuous monitoring is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of batteries. This paper investigates the advancements in battery monitoring technology, focusing on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). By examining the factors contributing to battery degradation and the principles of FBGs, this study discusses key aspects of FBG sensing, including mounting locations, monitoring targets, and their correlation with optical signals. While current FBG battery sensing can achieve high measurement accuracies for temperature (0.1 °C), strain (0.1 με), pressure (0.14 bar), and refractive index (6 × 10 -5 RIU), with corresponding sensitivities of 40 pm/°C, 2.2 pm/με, -0.3 pm/bar, and -18 nm/RIU, respectively, accurately assessing battery health in real time remains a challenge. Traditional methods struggle to provide real-time and precise evaluations by analyzing the microstructure of battery materials or physical phenomena during chemical reactions. Therefore, by summarizing the current state of FBG battery sensing research, it is evident that monitoring battery material properties (e.g., refractive index and gas properties) through FBGs offers a promising solution for real-time and accurate battery health assessment. This paper also delves into the obstacles of battery monitoring, such as standardizing the FBG encapsulation process, decoupling multiple parameters, and controlling costs. Ultimately, the paper highlights the potential of FBG monitoring technology in driving advancements in battery development.

The Jones matrix and the Mueller matrix of the coherent Rayleigh backscattering (RB) in single-mode fibers (SMFs) have been derived recently. It has been shown that both matrices depict two polarization effects-birefringence and polarization-dependent loss (PDL)-although the SMF under investigation is purely birefringent, having no PDL. In this paper, we aim to perform a theoretical analysis of both matrices using polar decomposition. The derived sub-Jones/Mueller matrices, representing birefringence and PDL, respectively, can be used to investigate the polarization properties of the coherent RB. As an application of the theoretical results, we use the derived formulas to investigate the polarization properties of the optical signals in phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR). For the first time, to our knowledge, by using the derived birefringence-Jones matrix, the common optical phase of the optical signal in φ-OTDR is obtained as the function of the forward phase and birefringence distributions. By using the derived PDL-Mueller matrix, the optical intensity of the optical signal in φ-OTDR is obtained as the function of the forward phase and birefringence distributions as well as the input state of polarization (SOP). Further theoretical predictions show that, in φ-OTDR, the common optical phase depends on only the local birefringence in the first half of the fiber section, which is occupied by the sensing pulse, irrelevant of the input SOP. However, the intensity of the φ-OTDR signal is not a local parameter, which depends on the input SOP and the birefringence distribution along the entire fiber section before the optical pulse. Time-resolved spectroscopy, especially transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS), provides valuable insights to excited state dynamics. Analyzing TAS data involves fitting complex kinetic traces at various probe wavelengths using different rate equations. Conventional TAS global fitting methods require domain experts to establish physically valid models and provide good initial guesses to generate converged solutions. This poses challenges for non-experts who seek to utilize TAS, thus limiting its broader application and impact. To address this problem, we propose an intelligent optimization framework based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. In the proposed method, the PSO algorithm acts as the global fitting method to find the optimal values of the target variables or unknown parameters in the kinetics models. The target solution is optimized by iteratively updating candidate solutions with respect to an objective feedback signal. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed PSO-based global fitting method with both synthetic and experimental datasets. The results show that our proposed method can successfully find the optimal target values in the global fitting process automatically, thus eliminating the iterative manual labor traditionally required. Background, Objectives: Decrease in the revised ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R) score is currently the most widely used measure of disease progression. However, it does not sufficiently encompass the heterogeneity of ALS. We describe a measure of variability in ALSFRS-R scores and demonstrate its utility in disease characterization., Methods: We used 5030 ALS clinical trial patients from the Pooled Resource Open-Access ALS Clinical Trials database to calculate variability in disease progression employing a novel measure and correlated variability with disease span. We characterized the more and less variable populations and designed a machine learning model that used clinical, laboratory and demographic data to predict class of variability. The model was validated with a holdout clinical trial dataset of 84 ALS patients (NCT00818389)., Results: Greater variability in disease progression was indicative of longer disease span on the patient-level. The machine learning model was able to predict class of variability with accuracy of 60.1-72.7% across different time periods and yielded a set of predictors based on clinical, laboratory and demographic data. A reduced set of 16 predictors and the holdout dataset yielded similar accuracy., Discussion: This measure of variability is a significant determinant of disease span for fast-progressing patients. The predictors identified may shed light on pathophysiology of variability, with greater variability in fast-progressing patients possibly indicative of greater compensatory reinnervation and longer disease span. Increasing variability alongside decreasing rate of disease progression could be a future aim of trials for faster-progressing patients.

Mass spectrometry-coupled cellular thermal shift assay (MS-CETSA), a biophysical principle-based technique that measures the thermal stability of proteins at the proteome level inside the cell, has contributed significantly to the understanding of drug mechanisms of action and the dissection of protein interaction dynamics in different cellular states. One of the barriers to the wide applications of MS-CETSA is that MS-CETSA experiments must be performed on the specific cell lines of interest, which is typically time-consuming and costly in terms of labeling reagents and mass spectrometry time. In this study, we aim to predict CETSA features in various cell lines by introducing a computational framework called CycleDNN based on deep neural network technology. For a given set of n cell lines, CycleDNN comprises n auto-encoders. Each auto-encoder includes an encoder to convert CETSA features from one cell line into latent features in a latent space [Formula: see text]. It also features a decoder that transforms the latent features back into CETSA features for another cell line. In such a way, the proposed CycleDNN creates a cyclic prediction of CETSA features across different cell lines. The prediction loss, cycle-consistency loss, and latent space regularization loss are used to guide the model training. Experimental results on a public CETSA dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. The properties of the state of polarization (SOP) and the degree of polarization (DOP) of Rayleigh backscattered light (RBL) in single-mode fibers (SMF) are investigated theoretically and experimentally when the incident probe is a perfectly coherent continuous-wave (CW) light. It is concluded that the instantaneous DOP of the coherently superposed RBL is always 100%, and the instantaneous SOP is determined by the distributions of the birefringence and the optical phase along the SMF. Therefore, the instantaneous SOP of the coherently superposed RBL does not have a constant relationship with the SOP of the incident CW probe. Furthermore, the instantaneous SOP varies randomly with time because the optical phase is very sensitive to ambient temperature and vibration even in the lab environment. Further theoretical derivation and experimental verification demonstrate, for the first time, that the temporally averaged SOP of the coherently superposed RBL has a simple constant relationship with the SOP of the incident CW probe, and the temporally averaged DOP is 1/3 in an SMF with low and randomly distributed birefringence. The derived formulas and obtained findings can be used to enhance the modelling and improve the performances of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry and other Rayleigh backscattering based fiber-optic sensors.

This work proposed KidneyRegNet, a novel deep registration pipeline for 3D CT and 2D U/S kidney scans of free breathing, which comprises a feature network, and a 3D-2D CNN-based registration network. The feature network has handcrafted texture feature layers to reduce the semantic gap. The registration network is an encoder-decoder structure with loss of feature-image-motion (FIM), which enables hierarchical regression at decoder layers and avoids multiple network concatenation. It was first pretrained with a retrospective dataset cum training data generation strategy and then adapted to specific patient data under unsupervised one-cycle transfer learning in onsite applications. The experiment was performed on 132 U/S sequences, 39 multiple-phase CT and 210 public single-phase CT images, and 25 pairs of CT and U/S sequences. This resulted in a mean contour distance (MCD) of 0.94 mm between kidneys on CT and U/S images and MCD of 1.15 mm on CT and reference CT images. Datasets with small transformations resulted in MCDs of 0.82 and 1.02 mm, respectively. Large transformations resulted in MCDs of 1.10 and 1.28 mm, respectively. Motivation: Metabolic stability plays a crucial role in the early stages of drug discovery and development. Accurately modeling and predicting molecular metabolic stability has great potential for the efficient screening of drug candidates as well as the optimization of lead compounds. Considering wet-lab experiment is time-consuming, laborious, and expensive, in silico prediction of metabolic stability is an alternative choice. However, few computational methods have been developed to address this task. In addition, it remains a significant challenge to explain key functional groups determining metabolic stability., Results: To address these issues, we develop a novel cross-modality graph contrastive learning model named CMMS-GCL for predicting the metabolic stability of drug candidates. In our framework, we design deep learning methods to extract features for molecules from two modality data, i.e. SMILES sequence and molecule graph. In particular, for the sequence data, we design a multihead attention BiGRU-based encoder to preserve the context of symbols to learn sequence representations of molecules. For the graph data, we propose a graph contrastive learning-based encoder to learn structure representations by effectively capturing the consistencies between local and global structures. We further exploit fully connected neural networks to combine the sequence and structure representations for model training. Extensive experimental results on two datasets demonstrate that our CMMS-GCL consistently outperforms seven state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, a collection of case studies on sequence data and statistical analyses of the graph structure module strengthens the validation of the interpretability of crucial functional groups recognized by CMMS-GCL. Recent advancements in 3D deep learning have led to significant progress in improving accuracy and reducing processing time, with applications spanning various domains such as medical imaging, robotics, and autonomous vehicle navigation for identifying and segmenting different structures. In this study, we employ the latest developments in 3D semi-supervised learning to create cutting-edge models for the 3D object detection and segmentation of buried structures in high-resolution X-ray semiconductors scans. We illustrate our approach to locating the region of interest of the structures, their individual components, and their void defects. We showcase how semi-supervised learning is utilized to capitalize on the vast amounts of available unlabeled data to enhance both detection and segmentation performance. Additionally, we explore the benefit of contrastive learning in the data pre-selection step for our detection model and multi-scale Mean Teacher training paradigm in 3D semantic segmentation to achieve better performance compared with the state of the art. Our extensive experiments have shown that our method achieves competitive performance and is able to outperform by up to 16% on object detection and 7.8% on semantic segmentation. Additionally, our automated metrology package shows a mean error of less than 2 μm for key features such as Bond Line Thickness and pad misalignment.

Detecting protein complexes is critical for studying cellular organizations and functions. The accumulation of protein-protein interaction (PPI) data enables the identification of protein complexes computationally. Although a great number of computational methods have been proposed to identify protein complexes from PPI networks, most of them ignore the signs of PPIs that reflect the ways proteins interact (activation or inhibition). As not all PPIs imply co-complex relationships, taking into account the signs of PPIs can benefit the identification of protein complexes. Moreover, PPI networks are not static, but vary with the change of cell states or environments. However, existing methods are primarily designed for single-network clustering, and rarely consider joint clustering of multiple PPI networks. In this study, we propose a novel partially shared signed network clustering (PS-SNC) model for identifying protein complexes from multiple state-specific signed PPI networks jointly. PS-SNC can not only consider the signs of PPIs, but also identify the common and unique protein complexes in different states. Experimental results on synthetic and real datasets show that our PS-SNC model can achieve better performance than other state-of-the-art protein complex detection methods. Spatial transcriptomics technologies generate gene expression profiles with spatial context, requiring spatially informed analysis tools for three key tasks, spatial clustering, multisample integration, and cell-type deconvolution. We present GraphST, a graph self-supervised contrastive learning method that fully exploits spatial transcriptomics data to outperform existing methods. It combines graph neural networks with self-supervised contrastive learning to learn informative and discriminative spot representations by minimizing the embedding distance between spatially adjacent spots and vice versa. We demonstrated GraphST on multiple tissue types and technology platforms. GraphST achieved 10% higher clustering accuracy and better delineated fine-grained tissue structures in brain and embryo tissues. GraphST is also the only method that can jointly analyze multiple tissue slices in vertical or horizontal integration while correcting batch effects. Lastly, GraphST demonstrated superior cell-type deconvolution to capture spatial niches like lymph node germinal centers and exhausted tumor infiltrating T cells in breast tumor tissue., (© 2023. Although humans are capable of learning new tasks without forgetting previous ones, most neural networks fail to do so because learning new tasks could override the knowledge acquired from previous data. In this work, we alleviate this issue by proposing a novel Efficient Perturbation Inference and Expandable Network (EPIE-Net), which dynamically expands lightweight task-specific decoders for new classes and utilizes a mixed-label uncertainty strategy to improve the robustness. Moreover, we calculate the average probability of perturbed samples at inference, which can generally improve the performance of the model. Experimental results show that our method consistently outperforms other methods with fewer parameters in class incremental learning benchmarks. In this paper, we propose a simple and elegant method to extract the thickness and the optical constants of various films from the reflectance and transmittance spectra in the wavelength range of 350 - 1000 nm. The underlying inverse problem is posed here as an optimization problem. To find unique solutions to this problem, we adopt an evolutionary optimization approach that drives a population of candidate solutions towards the global optimum. An ensemble of Tauc-Lorentz Oscillators (TLOs) and an ensemble of Gaussian Oscillators (GOs), are leveraged to compute the reflectance and transmittance spectra for different candidate thickness values and refractive index profiles. This model-based optimization is solved using two efficient evolutionary algorithms (EAs), namely genetic algorithm (GA) and covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy (CMAES), such that the resulting spectra simultaneously fit all the given data points in the admissible wavelength range. Learning continually from a stream of training data or tasks with an ability to learn the unseen classes using a zero-shot learning framework is gaining attention in the literature. It is referred to as continual zero-shot learning (CZSL). Existing CZSL requires clear task-boundary information during training which is not practically feasible. This paper proposes a task-free generalized CZSL (Tf-GCZSL) method with short-term/long-term memory to overcome the requirement of task-boundary in training. A variational autoencoder (VAE) handles the fundamental ZSL tasks. The short-term and long-term memory help to overcome the condition of the task boundary in the CZSL framework. Further, the proposed Tf-GCZSL method combines the concept of experience replay with dark knowledge distillation and regularization to overcome the catastrophic forgetting issues in a continual learning framework. Finally, the Tf-GCZSL uses a fully connected classifier developed using the synthetic features generated at the latent space of the VAE. The performance of the proposed Tf-GCZSL is evaluated in the existing task-agnostic prediction setting and the proposed task-free setting for the generalized CZSL over the five ZSL benchmark datasets. The results clearly indicate that the proposed Tf-GCZSL improves the prediction at least by 12%, 1%, 3%, 4%, and 3% over existing state-of-the-art and baseline methods for CUB, aPY, AWA1, AWA2, and SUN datasets, respectively in both settings (task-agnostic prediction and task-free learning). Objective. With practice, the control of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) would improve over time; the neural correlate for such learning had not been well studied. We demonstrated here that monkeys controlling a motor BCI using a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) decoder could learn to make the firing patterns of the recorded neurons more distinct over a short period of time for different output classes to improve task performance. Approach. Using an LDA decoder, we studied two Macaque monkeys implanted with microelectrode arrays as they controlled the movement of a mobile robotic platform. The LDA decoder mapped high-dimensional neuronal firing patterns linearly onto a lower-dimensional linear discriminant (LD) space, and we studied the changes in the spatial coordinates of these neural signals in the LD space over time, and their correspondence to trial performance. Direction selectivity was quantified with permutation feature importance (FI). Main results. We observed that, within individual sessions, there was a tendency for the points in the LD space encoding different directions to diverge, leading to fewer misclassification errors, and, hence, improvement in task accuracy. Accuracy was correlated with the presence of channels with strong directional preference (i.e. high FI), as well as a varied population code (i.e. high variance in FI distribution). Significance. We emphasized the importance of studying the short-term/intra-sessional variations in neural representations during the use of BCI. Neuroimaging studies are often limited by the number of subjects and cognitive processes that can be feasibly interrogated. However, a rapidly growing number of neuroscientific studies have collectively accumulated an extensive wealth of results. Digesting this growing literature and obtaining novel insights remains to be a major challenge, since existing meta-analytic tools are constrained to keyword queries. In this paper, we present Text2Brain, an easy to use tool for synthesizing brain activation maps from open-ended text queries. Text2Brain was built on a transformer-based neural network language model and a coordinate-based meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies. Text2Brain combines a transformer-based text encoder and a 3D image generator, and was trained on variable-length text snippets and their corresponding activation maps sampled from 13,000 published studies. In our experiments, we demonstrate that Text2Brain can synthesize meaningful neural activation patterns from various free-form textual descriptions. Inspired by human behavior when traveling over unknown terrain, this study proposes the use of probing strategies and integrates them into a traversability analysis framework to address safe navigation on unknown rough terrain. Our framework integrates collapsibility information into our existing traversability analysis, as vision and geometric information alone could be misled by unpredictable non-rigid terrains such as soft soil, bush area, or water puddles. With the new traversability analysis framework, our robot has a more comprehensive assessment of unpredictable terrain, which is critical for its safety in outdoor environments. The pipeline first identifies the terrain's geometric and semantic properties using an RGB-D camera and desired probing locations on questionable terrains. These regions are probed using a force sensor to determine the risk of terrain collapsing when the robot steps over it. This risk is formulated as a collapsibility metric, which estimates an unpredictable region's ground collapsibility. Thereafter, the collapsibility metric, together with geometric and semantic spatial data, is combined and analyzed to produce global and local traversability grid maps. These traversability grid maps tell the robot whether it is safe to step over different regions of the map. The grid maps are then utilized to generate optimal paths for the robot to safely navigate to its goal. Advances in high-throughput experimental technologies promote the accumulation of vast number of biomedical data. Biomedical link prediction and single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data imputation are two essential tasks in biomedical data analyses, which can facilitate various downstream studies and gain insights into the mechanisms of complex diseases. Both tasks can be transformed into matrix completion problems. For a variety of matrix completion tasks, matrix factorization has shown promising performance. However, the sparseness and high dimensionality of biomedical networks and scRNA-seq data have raised new challenges. To resolve these issues, various matrix factorization methods have emerged recently. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review on such matrix factorization methods and their usage in biomedical link prediction and scRNA-seq data imputation. Moreover, we select representative matrix factorization methods and conduct a systematic empirical comparison on 15 real data sets to evaluate their performance under different scenarios. By summarizing the experimental results, we provide general guidelines for selecting matrix factorization methods for different biomedical matrix completion tasks and point out some future directions to further improve the performance for biomedical link prediction and scRNA-seq data imputation., (© The Author(s) 2021.
